Beginner’s guide to buying a gas BBQ
BBQ season is upon us. No two BBQs are created equal, so it’s important to know what to look for when purchasing yours. While shopping, consider the following:
Material – Living in the New Zealand climate means that you should purchase a stainless steel unit to avoid oxidization due to proximity to the ocean. Make sure all of the steel on your BBQ is stainless, including beneath the hood, wherever possible.
Magnetics – Bring a fridge magnetic along and test it on the BBQ. Magnets don’t stick to high-grade stainless steel.
Enamel coating – Be sure to check the standard of the grill head’s enamel coating. Avoid bubbles, which can lead to corrosion.
Size – Consider how many people you will be regularly cooking for and buy a system with more or less burners accordingly.
Gas hose – Before you purchase a new BBQ, make sure the gas hose is easy to connect, especially if the gas sits within a cabinet.
Heat – Higher megajoule ratings are rated in relation to heat dissipation and position, not necessarily higher heat. A larger grill surface can actually cause your BBQ to lose heat.
