Homemade churros

Craving something sweet? Mix things up with these easy-to-make deep fried churros and chocolate sauce.

You will need:

  • 1.5cm piping tube and bag

Ingredients:

  • ⅓ cup of caster sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of caster sugar, extra
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 2 litres of vegetable oil
  • 1cup of water

Sauce

  • ¾ cup of thickened cream
  • 180g of dark chocolate, chopped

Method:

  1. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix caster sugar and cinnamon.
  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, mix water, olive oil and one tablespoon of sugar and bring to a boil.
  4. Add flour and stir. The mixture should form a ball of dough. Remove from heat.
  5. Add vegetable oil to a deep fryer and heat to 180°C.
  6. Place dough in piping bag and squeeze into strips, cutting the ends.
  7. Place a few strips into deep fryer and cook for three to five minutes or until golden.
  8. Remove from heat and let drain over a wire rack before rolling in cinnamon and sugar mixture while still warm.
  9. Repeat for all dough.
  10. To make the sauce, in a small saucepan, bring cream near to a boil. Add chocolate and stir until mixed and smooth.
  11. Serve as dip with warm churros.
