Perth Zoo celebrates birth of endangered kangaroo

Perth Zoo is celebrating the birth of an incredibly rare Goodfellows tree-kangaroo, which is the first successful birth in captivity of the endangered animal in 36 years.

And as you can see in the video above, he’s very cute.

The joey, named Mian, is now one of only 15 male Goodfellows tree-kangaroos in captivity worldwide. The species, also known as the ornate tree kangaroo, has seen its wild population sliced in half over the last 30 years due to hunting and a loss of habitat.

The successful birth is reportedly a real boon for the species, which is native to Papua New Guinea and in the wild spends its time living in the tree canopy.

Australian Fauna Keeper Kerry Pickles told Huffington Post’, "His genetics will be very valuable when he reaches breeding age."

While he’s probably not the kind of kangaroo we’ve grown accustomed to, we still think Mian is very cute. What’s your favourite experience with a kangaroo?
