Neighbour's "petty" act against "obnoxious" driver

A Sydney resident has detailed her "petty" move against her neighbour after becoming fed up with his "obnoxious" parking. Venting about her neighbour online, the Manly resident claimed the man's "over loud, oversized vehicle permanently sticks out from his property, partially blocking footpath". While he was parked in his own driveway, blocking the footpath is illegal and can attract a $283 fine, sometimes more in other council areas across the country. "This noise-polluting monstrosity should be banned, or at least parked on the street (preferably not ours)," she said, attaching a picture of a large ute with its tray sticking out on the footpath. In an attempt to put an end to the "grubby" behaviour, the resident said she reported her neighbour to the Northern Beaches council. The council website states: "residents must not park in or across a driveway (even your own)," to ensure pedestrian safety and access. "Ensure your car is within the front boundary of the property or parked safely in the street." The council told Yahoo News Australia that after the incident was reported via Snap, Snap, Solve, the driver was fined. Officers have reportedly been proactively patrolling the area since, and found no repeated instances. However, the woman was shocked to see see the driver's "pride and joy still there" in the driveway. "Today I received an email from council saying the matter has been resolved. Do council not care or is this an insufficient crime for any action to be taken?" she asked other residents on Facebook. Her post has divided residents, while most people agreed with her, others told her to mind her business. "I’m surprised he doesn’t get booked as he is blocking the footpath for prams and wheelchairs," one person said. "That’s kind of dangerous. Plus disabled or kids on bikes could slam into it," another added. "Car park is sh*te but it doesn’t seem like it’s affecting you. Take a deep breath and stop working yourself up over things that really don’t matter," someone else argued. Residents slam "entitled" picnic table act at popular beach

With the weather warming up in Sydney, locals have started to take advantage of the sun and head to beach, but with sunny days come debates about picnic (or any) table etiquette. One beachgoer has copped some backlash after they taped up a sign to a public picnic table in Balmoral Beach on Saturday, which read: "Reserved 31/8 from 1pm" - and with no one in sight. A frustrated local shared an image of the table on Facebook, writing: "Really? Love to know where you place the official booking. Both tables 'reserved'." In the comments some labelled the move "unacceptable" while others were quick to point out that reserving tables is "not allowed". "Yeah, nah. Can’t reserve public tables. You want it, put the effort in and sit there the whole day from 8am," one wrote. "If you won't remove the reserved sign please update this post to add a picture of the group when they claim their tables. If they're that bold and brazen to make the reserved sign they will appreciate the free publicity," another added. A third wrote that they would be "ok if they said for a wedding or a super important event I would let them go for it" but others disagreed. A Mosman Council spokesperson told Yahoo, "council does not take bookings for picnic tables or promote reserving them." This is not the first time someone has tried to reserve a public picnic table, with one person etching a "reserved" note in chalk on the pavement at a park in Brisbane. Grandmother's body found 800km from home

Police have revealed the body of a Queensland grandmother has been found 800km from home in bushland near a main tourist area. Wendy Hansen, 63, was last seen at an ATM in her hometown Monto - about 170km west of Bundaberg, Queensland - on February 29 this year. She was reported missing when she didn't return home, with police finding CCTV footage of her driving 400km south on Queensland's main highway on February 29. Queensland Police continued their public push for information in the months that followed, but on Thursday, NSW police revealed that they found her body half buried in bushland near Jordan Esplanade in Coffs Harbour on June 18. NSW homicide detectives are now looking for her vehicle, a silver 2007 two-door Mitsubishi Pajero with Queensland registration plates 645TCZ. In a statement on Thursday, NSW detectives appealed to the public for help with finding her car. "As investigations continue detectives are appealing to the public for any information, CCTV or dashcam footage that may assist the investigation to contact NSW Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," they said. "Detectives are specifically interested in the location of Wendy’s car which has not yet been located and are urging anyone with dashcam vision of the car to contact police immediately." Police issue AVO to protect Larry Emdur

Larry Emdur has had an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) taken out to protect him, days after he won the Gold Logie. The order has been taken out by NSW police on behalf of the TV host against a Victorian man, who allegedly attempted to gain access to the Channel Seven office on Central Ave, Eveleigh on Thursday August 22 at around 11.15am. According to the Daily Telegraph, the man "allegedly walked into the Central Ave building, past a security desk and got into a lift before demanding to see the much loved TV host." The publication also reported that police issued the AVO as they were concerned for Emdur's safety. “Officers from South Sydney Police Area Command attended and spoke with a 52-year-old man who had been escorted from the building by security,” NSW Police said in a statement. The man was arrested and taken to hospital for assessment before he was then taken to Surry Hills Police Station. He was charged with trespass and possession of a prohibited drug. The man faced Downing Centre Local Court where he was granted conditional bail and is due to reappear on September 5. His conditions include not entering Central Ave, the suburb of Haymarket, or within 200m of the Channel 7 office. The 52-year-old has also been ordered to report to Redfern Police Station daily. Aussie motorist's act of defiance against parking fees

Aussie drivers have been warned against replicating a cheeky way a motorist tried to pay for parking at a cashless parking meter. The motorist wasn't able to pay for his parking charges with a card, so instead they erected a sign in his car with gold coins attached, proving they are good for the parking fees. The driver said the cashless revolution doesn't "suit their lifestyle", but added they are "willing to pay for parking with these coins any day of the week". Despite displaying their method of payment, the North Sydney Council, who recently upgraded all their parking meters to cashless ones, explained to <a href="https://au.finance.yahoo.com/news/major-136-fine-warning-after-fed-up-aussies-3-cashless-act-of-defiance-023528239.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Yahoo</a> Finance this method could massively backfire. "The only way to avoid being fined is to comply with the signage restrictions for the space in which you have parked," a Council spokesperson said. "In metered spaces, you must pay using our parking meters. You are likely to receive a fine if you leave a note and do not pay," with parking fines in this council setting you back $136. After the driver's unique payment method garnered attention on social media, many agreed with their sentiment saying there should always be an option for people to pay with cash. "Should always have a cash option," wrote one user, while another said, "How can they expect everyone to be credit card online app savvy anyway and download it while standing in the street? Watching your parents become grandparents is a beautiful experience, but it often comes with disagreements or differences in opinion in terms of how you are raising your kids. One grandma has gone viral for her wise words when it comes to navigating these differences. "If I don't agree with every little decision that my daughter makes for the baby, I usually don't say anything," TikTok user @mommom.maria, who frequently posts about being a grandma, shared recalled her most recent babysitting experience. "Sometimes I can't help myself, and when it came to this I couldn't help myself, I had to say something." She explained that her 13-month-old granddaughter has two bottles a day, one in the morning and one at night. "My husband and I were babysitting the other night and my daughter said to put her milk before bed in this," she said, holding up a sippy cup with a straw. The grandmother didn't think it was okay that her granddaughter was drinking out of a sippy cup that young, but admitted that it's not her decision to make. "I'm not the decision maker. I'm not the mum: I'm the Mum-Mum, the privileged Mum-Mum that gets to babysit her," she explained. She decided to respect her daughter's choices, and said that her granddaughter drank her milk with no issues. "So I guess my daughter was right, and that's really what I wanted to say to the other grandmothers: You don't have to agree, but you have to do it," she finished. Devastated wife reveals croc attack victim's heroic final act

The grieving wife of the 40-year-old doctor who was killed by a crocodile in Far North Queensland has spoken out about her husband's heroic actions in the moments before his tragic death. David Hogbin, a general practitioner from Newcastle, was holidaying near Cooktown with his wife Jane and their three young sons when he was attacked by a crocodile. “Outrageous”: Silver medal stripped after illegal act

The women's 5,000m final has ended in controversy after the second place holder was stripped of her medal and disqualified. Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet took out first place in the final, while her fellow countrywoman Faith Kipyegon crossed the line second. The two Kenyan champions were seen celebrating with their country's flag after the race concluded, but their celebrations were cut short when news of Kipyegon's disqualification came through. Replays show that with two laps of the race to go, Kipyegon became entangled in a close proximity battle with Ethiopian rival Gudaf Tsegay as they raced for the first place. Kipyegon appeared to pull on the arm of Tsegay who reacted angrily by fending off the Kenyan. A Eurosport commentator was in disbelief over the display and couldn’t quite believe Kipyegon had been disqualified over the act. “That was outrageous I’m afraid. I am astonished,” he said on the global broadcast. “That was dreadful. She was not in front of her and shouldn’t have moved into her space. She wasn’t remotely far enough in front of her. There’s a rule you cannot [enter] into the space of an athlete where their feet are landing. Tsegay there was very out of order." “I think Tsegay was pushing into Kipyegon. Kipyegon just tried to protect her area, her zone so to speak." “If anything from those pictures what I’ve witnessed so far, and we need to get more information, I think Tsegay should have been disqualified. After a thorough review of the incident, the appeal panel agreed with the Kenyan team’s assessment, concluding that the contact was part of the natural dynamics of a highly competitive race. Police officially declare woman's lawnmower death "suspicious"

Frances Crawford, 49, was found dead on an Upper Lockyer property in Queensland shortly before 4am on Tuesday, with paramedics initially reporting the incident as a "mower rollover". But on Thursday Queensland police provided an update on the investigation, and are now treating her death as suspicious – with Frances' husband the focus of the investigation. “A 49-year-old woman was located with critical injuries and passed away at the scene,” police said. “Further investigations have led police to deem the death as suspicious and investigations are underway into the circumstances.” Police are still waiting on the results of forensics testing. Crawford was a dedicated psychologist at Quality Life Psychology Services in the Toowoomba suburb of Kearneys Spring. Her colleagues have expressed their shock over her untimely death and paid tribute to their team member. “We remember Frances Crawford as a very skilled psychologist and valued and respected team member in the Quality Life Psychology Services family,” the clinic said in a statement. “Frances was a true professional and was highly regarded by her clients and colleagues. “At this time, we are all still stunned and coming to terms at the news of her untimely demise, and we extend to her immediate and church families our most sincere condolences. “Frances will be sorely missed by all.” Her grieving family also paid tribute in a statement shared on Thursday afternoon. “Frances had a loving heart and she always saw the best in others,” they wrote. “She cared deeply about the people around her and put their needs before her own.” Her family said her “gentle grace and compassionate nature” will be missed by all who knew her, especially her church and work families. “God was at the centre of Frances’ life,” they wrote. “She loved Jesus, and it is a great comfort to her family and friends that she is now at peace in heaven.” “A wonderful wife and mother to three fantastic children, a treasured daughter, sister and niece, a loyal and valued friend, and a professional psychologist whose caring nature and years of training allowed her to look after so many others during their time of need,” they said. “Frances gave fully and freely of herself, a beautiful soul inside and out. “She was a truly special person whose passing is a tragedy and the ripples of which are only just beginning to be felt.” Images: Crawford Family/ 7NEWS

Queen Mary has made a surprise appearance at the Olympics and shared a sweet exchange with the Australian swim team after they snatched up a gold medal. The Australian relay team, with Mollie O’Callaghan, Ariarne Titmus, Lani Pallister, and Brianna Throssel took home the gold and an Olympic record in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay. After they received their gold medals, Ariarne Titmus noticed the Australian-born queen in the stands, and jogged over to her and straight into her arms for a celebratory hug. Queen Mary was beaming with pride as they reveled in the glory. She also pulled out her phone to snap pictures of the moment and even took selfies with the Olympians. “A gold medal in Paris and a royal hug. Aussie Olympic judge sent home after “inappropriate act”

Australian surfing judge Ben Lowe has been sent home from the Paris Games after an "inappropriate" photo with an athlete went viral. Lowe posed for a photo with Aussie surfer Ethan Ewing and his coach Bede Durbidge on the beaches of Tahiti - the largest island in French Polynesia where the Olympic surfing competition is taking place - to celebrate Ewing making it to the quarter finals. The photo of the men soon went viral with the caption, “Three Straddie (North Stradbroke Island) boys doing their stuff at the Olympics.” Despite the photo seeming completely harmless, the International Surfing Association (ISA) took swift action against Lowe. According to the ISA, Lowe, an experienced World Surf League judge, has been stood down in accordance with the ISA’s code of conduct and the International Olympic Committee’s code of ethics. The ISA released a statement overnight saying it removed Lowe from the judging panel for the remainder of the competition to "protect the integrity and fairness of the ongoing competition". "The ISA is aware of a photo circulating on social media in which one of the Olympic surfing judges from Australia is seen socially interacting with an Australian athlete and the team manager," the ISA said. "It is inappropriate for a judge to be interacting in this manner with an athlete and their team." Pauline Hanson has revealed a surprising act of kindness for a struggling Queensland family, who have been battling the private healthcare system. Nine year old Kadee Byrnes, from Yeppoon, about 740km north of Brisbane, has been on the public hospital waiting list for seven years waiting for the adenoid surgery she desperately needs. The surgery is a procedure to remove the adenoids, small tissue lumps in the nasal cavity, to address her chronic tonsillitis. While on the waitlist, Kadee had to repeat the fourth grade after missing so much school due to reoccurring infections. Police officer charged after allegedly punching 70-year-old woman

A Victorian police officer has been stood down from duty after he allegedly punched a 70-year-old woman while in hospital. Sylvia Villani was being treated at the Northern Hospital in April when the alleged assault took place, and she said it came out of nowhere. "I threw a bit of bread on the ground. I had my leg in a plaster," Villani told 9News. "I was in a wheelchair and he punched me," she claimed. After the alleged attack, she sustained a broken eye socket. "I can't walk, I can't sit, I'm buggered," she said. "I don't know why he did it. "I did call him some nasty names, I wasn't happy, (but) I didn't deserve it." Villani's son, Rick, told 9News that he was only alerted about the incident after receiving a call from doctors who told him that three police officers went to the hospital for a separate incident before his mother was allegedly assaulted. He claimed that his family has been left in the dark. "I know my mum's got mental health, and she's not perfect," he said. "They've treated me, my wife and my mother with no respect." Victoria Police have stood down the 26-year-old male officer who was on duty when the incident occurred, after an internal investigation. Father remembered for "instinctive act of bravery" before train tragedy

A family outing has ended in tragedy when a pram carrying twin girls rolled onto the train tracks at Carlton railway station in Sydney. CCTV footage showed the family heading off on their outing just several minutes before tragedy struck. They were walking down the footpath, with the father holding the pram and the mother pulling a trolley bag, before waiting to cross the road to the train station. The parents had arrived on the platform via an elevator and taken their hands off the pram for a "very, very short period of time" when it began to roll, according to NSW Police Superintendent Paul Dunstan. The 40-year-old father is being remembered for his bravery, after he jumped onto the tracks to try and save his twin daughters. Horrified witnesses also tried to flag the train down, but unfortunately it was too late. Emergency services were called to the station at around 12:25 pm. The father and one of the two-year-old girls were killed, and the girls' mother who witnessed the accident unfold was left "incredibly traumatised" according to the Superintendent. Dunstan told reporters several hours after the tragedy that responding officers could hear crying from underneath the train. “Police climbed under the train and rescued one of the children, who was thankfully unharmed, and reunited her with the mother," Dunstan said. “Sadly, the other child, a two-year-old female, and her father who attempted to save the child, have passed away as a result of this incident.” “Whether it’s a gust of wind ... we’re not quite sure. Video footage has captured the scary moment a New Zealand influencer's windscreen got smashed in a wild road rage incident. Social media influencer Chantelle Baker claimed that the blue Mazda Demio had cut off another car behind her and began tailgating her when she was driving 40km/hr as she was carefully navigating a near-crash. “They started to scream at me from their car, trying to indicate [and] use their hands to tell me to pull over so they could go past,” she said in a video posted to Instagram. “I obviously didn’t. We go a few hundred metres and they decide to throw a rock at my car with my eight-month-old baby asleep in the back seat.” Baker said she saw them down a side road a couple of minutes later and followed their car to get the licence plate. She then recalled them pulling into an area near an old petrol station in Rangiora, Waimakariri, where the footage was filmed. In the viral clip, which has racked up over seven million views on TikTok, the two women can be seen exiting the Mazda and sprinting towards Baker's car. One of them ran up the bonnet and on to the windscreen causing it to shatter. The same woman then goes to the driver's door and tells Baker to "f*** off". Neighbour's "selfish" parking act sparks outrage

A resident in Leichhardt, Sydney, has taken matters into their own hands and decided to deal with the lack of parking by using orange traffic cones to reserve a space for themselves. But frustrated neighbours were not pleased with this act, as parking on the the busy street is already difficult to find. "It's been ongoing for months and doesn't look renovation-related," they wrote on social media. It is understood that there are no parking restrictions on the street, meaning that residents can park there for as long as they like, if they're lucky enough to find a spot. Social media users were quick to share their thoughts, with many suggesting to just move the "witches hats." Others slammed the resident's parking act as "outrageous" and called him out for his "rude" and "selfish" behaviour. "I've noticed that for months and wondered why people have been so observant of them," one person wrote. "I guess if you're self-entitled and can get away with it," another added. "Remove them when they aren't there, someone will park there," a third wrote. While there were a few others who supported the act, and said that residents were entitled to reserve a parking spot, the Inner West Council has debunked it. They said that reserving street parking using objects like traffic cones or other items and then leaving these objects unattended is prohibited. "Unfortunately, this type of thing does happen in our local government area," a spokesperson told Yahoo. Police Commissioner Grant Stevens and his wife Emma have opened up on their heart-breaking loss, sharing how they are still grieving the loss of their son eight months after his <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/health/caring/police-commissioner-s-son-killed-during-schoolies-week" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tragic passing</a>. Charlie Stevens was celebrating schoolies when he was killed in a hit-and-run accident, causing a brain injury that he wouldn't wake up from. He died a day after the accident on November 17th 2023 and was just 18 years old. Now, his distraught parents have spoken candidly about their last moments with their son. "I think being a parent, being a mum of an 18-year-old, they're not that smart. They're 18," Emma said. "And I look at it and I think it also could have been Charlie." Randhawa, who had no alcohol or drugs in his system at the time of the crash, was initially charged with causing death by dangerous driving, aggravated driving without due care, leaving the scene of a crash after death and failing to truly answer questions but, in reaching a plea deal, has admitted to a charge of aggravated driving without due care and leaving the scene of a crash. His admission of guilt to those two lesser charges has avoided the pain of going to trial, and instead faces court again next month for sentencing. Randhawa wrote a letter to the Stevens' apologising for his actions that caused the loss of their son, as Emma said, "And he’s written it, and that it’s words from an 18-year-old. I don’t think he’s been sat down and told what to write." “I think it’s him. In fact, I’m not so sure Charlie would be able to write something quite as good as that.” Grant added, "We're grateful that Dhirren has pleaded guilty. It gives us some understanding of his acceptance of his responsibility." "We appreciate it, we appreciate the fact that he's given us that apology." After Charlie's death, Grant and Emma asked mourners to channel their grief into donations for Operation Flinders, an outback adventure therapy program that has helped 10,000 at-risk teenagers. The response to Grant and Emma's request has been overwhelming, with close to $220,000 so far raised in Charlie's name. "He had an impact on so many, so many people but this is a way that he will continue to have a really positive impact on kids who will never even know about him," Grant proudly said. Woman dies after police fail to respond to 000 call in time

A delayed police response is under investigation after a woman in her 40s died when police officers took almost an hour to respond to a 000 call. Sarah Miles, a mother-of-three from Byron Bay, died after she was allegedly beaten by her boyfriend in her home on Saturday morning. A triple-0 call was made at 1:30am after neighbours reportedly heard screams coming from the house, but NSW Police didn’t acknowledge the call until 2:25am. By the time they arrived on the scene, they found Miles fighting for life in her final moments. She was unconscious but breathing, with “obvious injuries” to her head caused by a physical assault, NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna said. “Police assisted her and called for an ambulance immediately (which) arrived very shortly after, but unfortunately, her condition deteriorated, and she died at the scene,” McKenna said. “The delay in the timing of police acknowledging that call and attending the scene has given me enough concern that I’ve asked for an independent review of this investigation as to what that delay was and if it was justified." “We want to see what happened from the time that call was made, how the radio operator dispatched that call, the circumstances around the timings until it was acknowledged and until police attended.” The NSW Police Homicide Squad is working separately with local officers to investigate Miles’ death. McKenna said the force takes domestic violence very seriously and the issue is at the “top of our priority list”. “It is one of the most serious crimes there is, and we will do everything we can to take this as seriously as we can and make sure people are held to account and put before the courts,” he said.
