Missing mum of two found after 60 years

In a stunning breakthrough to one of America's longest-running cold cases, a woman who disappeared more than 60 years ago has been found alive and well – living in another state and expressing “no regrets” for leaving her past behind.

Audrey Backeberg was just 20 years old when she vanished on July 7, 1962, from her home in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, where she lived with her husband, Ronald Backeberg, and their two young children. Her sudden disappearance launched a decades-long search that ultimately went cold – until now.

In a press release issued Thursday, the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Ms Backeberg had been located alive following a renewed investigation into her case earlier this year.

“Through diligent investigative work, which included a thorough re-evaluation of all case files and evidence, combined with reinterviewing witnesses and uncovering new insights, the Sheriff’s Office is now able to report that Audrey Backeberg is alive and well,” the department announced.

The cold case was reassigned in March to Detective Isaac Hanson, who led the breakthrough investigation. His review included interviews with old witnesses, analysis of historical evidence, and a key lead involving a relative’s Ancestry.com profile.

“That was pretty key,” Hanson told WISN, describing how the online genealogy database helped him trace public records that eventually led to a current address. Once the address was identified, Hanson contacted the local sheriff’s department in the area. “Ten minutes later, she called me,” he said.

In a 45-minute phone conversation with Detective Hanson, Ms Backeberg confirmed her identity and shared that she left her family to escape what she described as an abusive and dangerous home environment.

“She sounded happy. Confident in her decision. No regrets,” Hanson said.

Just days before her disappearance in 1962, Ms Backeberg had filed a criminal complaint alleging that her husband had beaten her severely and threatened her life. Despite this, the couple remained in the home together, with their children.

On the day she vanished, Audrey reportedly left to collect a paycheck from her job at a woollen mill – but never returned. Rumours and conflicting accounts emerged over the years, including claims from a 14-year-old babysitter who said she saw Ms Backeberg hitchhike to Madison and take a bus to Indiana. Later, the same individual, when re-interviewed as an adult, claimed Audrey may have ingested pills before departing and might have connected with local construction workers.

For decades, her family believed Audrey would never willingly abandon her children. Her husband reportedly spent years chasing leads, but no trace of her was ever found – until now.

While authorities have not disclosed the state where Ms Backeberg currently resides, Detective Hanson said she had been living safely and independently all these years.

“She just moved on from things and led her life,” he said.

Authorities have closed the case with the confirmation that Audrey Backeberg left of her own volition and was not in danger at any point during the six decades she was missing.

Images: Wisconsin Police

Distressing new details surrounding Audrey Griffin's murder

After Adrian Torrens, the man accused of murdering 19-year-old Audrey Griffin, took his own life inside Silverwater Prison just days after being charged with her death, new details have been revealed around the lead-up to Griffin's death.

According to the Daily Telegraph, authorities confirmed that Torrens, 53, borrowed a razor blade from his cellmate last Thursday under the pretence of needing to shave ahead of a court appearance. Torrens then used the blade to end his life within the shared cell.

No foul play is suspected on the part of prison staff or inmates, and an official report is being prepared for the Coroner.

Just days earlier, Torrens had been charged with Griffin’s murder, nearly a month after her body was discovered in a creek bed near The Entrance Road at Erina. At first, Griffin’s death was believed to be a tragic accident despite multiple autopsies. This changed when detectives uncovered critical CCTV footage from outside the Elanora Hotel in East Gosford, recorded in the early hours of March 23 – which showed Griffin walking past the hotel shortly after 2am, with Torrens following closely behind. Griffin had told friends she intended to take an Uber to Terrigal, but she never made it.

Investigators later learned Torrens had shown signs of distress during a routine visit to a Community Corrections Office two weeks after Griffin’s death, and that he appeared emotionally troubled, citing a recent relationship breakdown and concerns over his mother's health. At the time, he was serving an 18-month community corrections order for previous domestic violence offences.

Following the public release of the CCTV footage, several of Torrens’ associates came forward, with one witness telling police Torrens had confessed to killing Griffin and described leaving her body in the mangroves.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb expressed full confidence in the officers handling the complex case, saying that the CCTV footage was released the same day investigators identified its significance.

A final determination on the circumstances surrounding Torrens' death will be made at a future coronial inquest.

Images: Facebook / LinkedIn

"She was my everything": Audrey Griffin's heartbroken mother speaks out

What began as an ordinary night out with friends ended in a tragedy that shattered a family, stunned a community, and prompted a determined mother to fight for answers no one else seemed to be asking.

Audrey Griffin, 19, was found dead in Erina Creek on the Central Coast of New South Wales last month. Her fully clothed body was discovered partially submerged in the water on March 23, just hours after she was reported missing. Initially, police deemed her death non-suspicious, possibly a tragic accident. But her mother, Kathleen Kirby, refused to accept that explanation.

“It’s like you can’t breathe, it’s like you don’t want to breathe,” Kirby told 7NEWS, speaking publicly through her grief. “But I needed to find the strength because I wasn’t satisfied with what the outcome was, so I kept going.”

Kirby’s instincts proved tragically accurate.

On Monday, NSW Police arrested 53-year-old Adrian Torrens and charged him with Audrey’s murder. Torrens, who police say had no prior connection to Audrey, is also facing 11 unrelated domestic violence charges. Authorities now allege a violent altercation occurred between the two as Audrey was walking home. Torrens’ lawyer appeared in court on his behalf Tuesday; he did not apply for bail. His case has been adjourned until next month.

Superintendent Darryl Jobson said that while early forensic and post-mortem findings did not initially indicate foul play, the case remained open due to “unusual circumstances”.

“Getting answers for the family was front of mind,” Jobson said. “New information from other sources led us to reconsider and launch a full homicide investigation.”

Kirby, driven by a mother’s intuition and unrelenting love, was at the centre of that push for the truth. “My head and my gut were telling me different,” she said. Now, as police pursue justice, a mother mourns the unimaginable loss of her only child.

“She was more than my world, she was my everything,” Kirby said through tears. “She’s just everything that you’d ever imagine, or want, for a child.”

Audrey was much more than a statistic or a headline. She was a triathlete, a teammate, a leader and a beloved friend. Just weeks before her death, she competed in New Zealand’s ANZCO Foods Half Ironman, finishing 23rd in her age group. She played water polo for Gosford, patrolled beaches with the Terrigal Surf Life Saving Club, took to the field with the Terrigal Sharks, and once served as vice-captain of Central Coast Sports College.

“She touched the hearts of so many people and always had a smile,” one friend wrote on social media. “Her laugh was contagious and her goofy self always made us laugh. Audrey, you are truly loved by so many people.”

Now, those same people are left grieving a life stolen too soon, and honouring a young woman whose courage, kindness and spirit made the world brighter – if only for a short time.

For Kirby, the fight for answers has turned into the deeper, longer journey of navigating life without her daughter. “I will never feel whole again,” she said.

Images: 7NEWS

Beloved Aussie athlete found dead at just 19

A tragic loss has shaken the Australian sports community following the discovery of 19-year-old triathlete Audrey Griffin’s body in a New South Wales creek.

Griffin, a beloved athlete from the Central Coast, was found partially submerged in Erina Creek on March 23 - a discovery that came just weeks after she had competed in the ANZCO Foods Half Ironman event in Taupo, New Zealand.

NSW Police confirmed Griffin’s body was located between the Punt Bridge and Pateman Road in Green Point, near Gosford. She was last seen at around 2am at the Gosford Hotel on Sunday morning, with her disappearance reported later that day. Authorities then found her body at around 5pm.

A police spokesperson stated, “Following inquiries, police attended a creek along the Central Coast Highway, where they located the body of the woman in the water. A crime scene was established, and inquiries into the incident are underway by officers attached to the Brisbane Water Police District. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.”

Reports indicate that Griffin was fully clothed when found, and a preliminary autopsy has listed drowning as the cause of death. Despite initial concerns, The Central Coast Express Advocate reported that her family was informed that her death is not being treated as suspicious.

Griffin was an active member of the Terrigal Surf Life Saving Club, Terrigal Sharks Rugby League Club and a former vice-captain of Central Coast Sports College. However, her passion for triathlons stood out, with Seven News reporting that she completed the Half Ironman on March 1 in a time of 6:40:32, securing 23rd place in her age group.

A makeshift memorial has been established near the creek, with flowers and messages of love from those who knew her.

Friends and loved ones took to social media to share heartfelt tributes. One person wrote, “A beautiful girl and treasured by a lot of people! Always had a smile on her face. We will miss you. Rest peacefully.” Another friend posted, “She touched the hearts of so many people and always had a smile. Her laugh was contagious, and her goofy self always made us laugh.”

As the investigation continues, the local community remains in mourning over the tragic loss of a young athlete with a promising future.

Images: Facebook

Lung cancer diagnosis on the rise in non-smokers

With lung cancer coming in as the fifth most common type of cancer diagnosed in Australia, but ranking as the leading cause of cancer death, experts are calling for more research to help identify it in its early stages and determine risk factors in non-smokers.

An example of a person with lung cancer, despite having never smoked, is US comedian Kathy Griffin who recently revealed she has been diagnosed with the cancer.

Because the cancer was caught early and is confined to her left lung, the 60-year-old comedian will undergo surgery to remove half of her left lung.

Following her surgery, Griffin is on the mend and keeping fans up-to-date with her recovery.
<blockquote style="background: #FFF; Ray Martin’s flirtatious encounter with Audrey Hepburn

After 50 years of being in the industry, Ray Martin has met a slew of famous faces, but there was one that stood out amongst the rest.

Audrey Hepburn.

“She’s something special,” Martin told Today Extra.

It was the ‘90s and Hepburn was visiting Australia with the United Nation. During her stay, she was scheduled to appear on Midday, the award-winning TV show hosted by Ray Martin.

“It was in fact here, in this very studio,” recounts Martin. “She was wearing a red skirt.”

“I wrote the introduction, as I often did.

“I said I’d fallen in love with Audrey Hepburn when I was about 15 after I saw her in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and she was still one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood.”

At the time Hepburn was 63 years old, and Martin was in his early 40s.

“She danced out, like the dancer she was – beautiful high cheekbones, lovely smile. She was simply beautiful – some laugh lines, but at 63, you’re allowed.”

There she was. His teenage dream standing right in front of him, but Martin was unsure on whether he should shake her hand or give her a peck on the cheek.

But despite the awkward encounter, Hepburn remained ever so flirtatious.

“She reached across, put her hand on my knee and said, ‘it’s never too late!’”

But Martin doesn’t believe that Hepburn tried to use the art of seduction on him saying, “I wish she had! I think she just liked the introduction.”

15 facts you never knew about Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn is a legend, and it’s not hard to understand why. Just think of that exquisite neck, those impossibly high cheekbones, the overall elfish persona and charismatic enthusiasm, not to mention her incredible intellect and compassion. While we could stand around all day touting the tremendous talent of this actor/dancer/humanitarian (now that’s a triple threat!), we’ll content ourselves with 15 of the most obvious reasons we still love Audrey Hepburn.

1. Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Hepburn’s portrayal of Holly Golightly not only catapulted her to icon status, it also spurned a fashion trend that has yet to go out of style – and likely never will. The little black dress (or LBD, if you will) is a wardrobe staple for scores of women across the globe. More than 50 years after the film first captivated audiences, the image of Holly gazing through the Fifth Avenue Tiffany & Co. store windows – with THAT Givenchy dress swathed over her slight frame – is still recreated and adored. In fact, the original dress sold for a whopping $923,187 at Christie’s in 2006!

2. Dancing prowess

First tapping her teenage toes during the Dutch Resistance in a bid to raise money for the cause, Audrey was taken with the art form from a young age. She took ballet lessons, taught dance and portrayed Gigi in a stage version of Colette, among just a few of her early accomplishments. Audrey’s most memorable performance, however, came when she starred as Jo Stockton in Funny Face (1957) and floored audiences with her wacky beatnik dance.

3. Turbulent childhood

With an English banker as a father and a Dutch baroness as a mother, it seemed inevitable that Audrey would enjoy a charmed early life, but things weren’t quite as they seemed. Her parents split prior to WWII and Audrey’s mother carted her to the Netherlands in an attempt to avoid the conflict. Before long, though, the war made its way to Holland where German occupation began. Despite having been schooled in England and speaking fluent English, Audrey was forced to take on the Dutch alias of Edda van Heemstra. As Edda, she even acted as a courier and secret messenger for the Dutch Resistance.

4. Multilinguistic

More than just a pretty face, superb actress and accomplished dancer, Hepburn also spoke a handful of languages, including English (of course), Italian, French, Spanish and Dutch/Flemish.

5. A great survivor

Malnutrition, anaemia and respiratory problems are just a few hurdles Audrey Hepburn was forced to overcome during the Second World War. The result of food shortages and rationing, some reports suggest she even ate tulip bulbs and attempted to make bread from grass during her years in the Netherlands. She also struggled to cope with the capture and imprisonment of her brother in a Nazi labour camp.

6. Hollywood immortal

On February 8, 1960, Audrey Hepburn was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Located at 1652 Vine Street, the small patch of pavement is transformed into a shrine on the anniversary of her death every year (January 20), proving just how strong her legacy is, and how many people love her still.

7. Ageing gracefully

Never one to favour nips and tucks, Audrey Hepburn aged with a grace we can all aspire to. Hepburn once said: “The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole, but true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she knows.”

8. Animal lover

Audrey Hepburn had a particular fondness for animals, and this bond was evident in the 1959 film, Green Mansions. A pet deer named Pip and a dog named Famous were just two of the furry friends Audrey adopted over the years, and she was staunch in her support of animal rights.

9. She attended the coolest parties

The now infamous Rothschild soiree – the Surrealist Ball – was held in France in 1972, and ranks as the most extravagant, ridiculous party we wished we’d been invited to. This photograph was taken by Cecil Beaton and reveals a costume inspired by Belgian surrealist artist Rene Magritte’s famous birdcages. Other prestigious invitees included artist Salvador Dali, supermodel Marisa Berenson and Baron Alexis de Redé.

10. Muse

The one and only Givenchy called Audrey his muse, and as the daughter of a baroness, she seemed almost born to inspire in a slightly regal sense. Her classic brand of femininity will always be on-trend, and she continues to inspire artists today. Indeed, her likeness has been recreated countless times in modern adverts and she will always be a go-to favourite for costume parties. Who wouldn't be inspired by that face?

11. Her work with UNICEF

From 1988 until her death in 1993, Audrey Hepburn held the position as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. So powerful was her desire to help children in need, she crusaded to the very end, even while battling cancer. “Taking care of children has nothing to do with politics. I think perhaps with time, instead of there being a politicization of humanitarian aid, there will be a humanization of politics,” she said.

12. Fearless nature

Not afraid to tackle difficult roles and subject matter, her performance in the controversial 1961 feature film, The Children’s Hour, revealed Hepburn’s ability to embody any character thrown her way. Weaving the tale of two best friends, Karen Wright (Hepburn) and Martha Dobie (Shirley MacLaine), the movie is a complex story of love and friendship in the face of discrimination and accusations.

13. Women’s advocate

Never shy to voice her opinions on women’s issues, Hepburn coined a number of memorable phrases. “There is more to sex appeal than just measurements. I don’t need a bedroom to prove my womanliness. I can convey just as much sex appeal, picking apples off a tree or standing in the rain.” Another of her finest: “The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair … True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It’s the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows, and the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years.”

14. A great role model

Unlike modern movie stars and pop singers, Audrey Hepburn is a role model you wouldn't mind your daughters looking up to. With great talent and supreme intellect, she was articulation personified. “I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls.”

15. Charming chameleon

With immense talent resting on her narrow shoulders, Audrey Hepburn was spectacular at inhabiting characters of all varieties. Each portrayal was genuine and some of her finest work can be seen in Sabrina (1954), Roman Holiday (1953), My Fair Lady (1964), Paris When It Sizzles (1964) and so many more.

Republished with permission of Wyza.com.au.

Feud between Sam Armytage and Kathy Griffin turns nasty

Two months after she first unleashed on Sunrise host Samantha Armytage, controversial US comedian Kathy Griffin has launched another nasty attack on the Aussie TV star – but this time, the bitter feud got very, very personal.

The hostility between the two began when Armytage questioned Griffin, who shared a photo of herself holding a fake severed head resembling Donald Trump, if she had gone too far. Griffin fired back, telling Armytage she was “full of crap.”

During her Sydney Opera House stand-up show on Saturday, Griffin, who lost her job at CNN, had her tour cancelled and was ostracised by Hollywood because of the stunt, proved that the beef was still well and truly alive.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Griffin took the feud to a disgraceful new low, implying Armytage was in a sexual relationship with “homophobic” Margaret Court and “Islamophobic” Pauline Hanson.

In an interview with radio hosts Kyle and Jackie O prior to the sold-out show, Griffin was unapologetic, saying she put Armytage “on the map”.

“She has been doing interviews where she said that she thinks I’m unwell. She feels that my answer, when I told her she was full of crap, made me quote ‘unwell’ which makes me feel bad, because I heard she has scurvy," Griffin said.

Armytage has remained mostly silent during Griffin’s attacks, however during an appearance on Mark Latham’s Outsiders earlier this month, she did briefly address the feud.

“I just thought she was a little bit unwell. I wasn’t applying politics that day I just thought she was a little bit unwell – kooky is one word for it," Armytage commented.
