Hilarious moment unassuming Aussie unknowingly interviews award-winning director

An Aussie TikToker has been left red-faced after unknowingly interviewing a legend of the Australian movie industry.

Georgia Godworth took to the streets of the Sydney inner west suburb of Newtown to ask members of the public for relationship advice.

Ms Godworth began asking a man in a green leather jacket some questions about relationships, oblivious as to who she was speaking to.

Turns out that man was award-winning director Baz Luhrmann.

She captioned the clip, which was posted to TikTok, “no idea this was Baz Luhrmann”.

In true director style, the video begins with Luhrmann instructing the social media star and her camera operator where to stand in order to get the best lighting for the clip.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; “That was the first time I felt embarrassed”: Baz Luhrmann's daughter opens up on rumours

Baz Luhrmann’s daughter Lilly has opened up about what it was like going through school with famous parents.

The 19-year-old daughter of the globally-renowned Elvis director and his four-time Oscar winning wife, costume designer Catherine Martin, has been educated in both Australia and Manhattan.

Speaking on an episode of the Under the Gloss podcast, Lilly said it was much harder growing up in Australia as her surname sparked more interest down under.

She mentioned a time when she was being driven to school, and a story had emerged on the radio that her father was “gay”, citing a report that he and his wife slept in different bedrooms.

“I did get followed to school by a truck that was paparazzi … They were bullying my dad there for a little bit there. I specifically remember I was driving in the car, on the radio, this guy was like, “Today we’re going to be discussing, is Baz Luhrmann gay? Breaking news, they sleep in two different bedrooms”,” Lilly said.

“And I went to school, and the kids were like, “Is your dad gay?”

“That was the first time I felt embarrassed … Not embarrassed, but more like, “Why are these people talking about my dad? Why are they making fun?” I’m like, “They just have different sleeping schedules".

The 19-year-old didn’t specify when the incident happened but mentioned it was the “first time” she felt her upbringing wasn’t entirely normal.

“I mean, I’m not traumatised for life by it. I’ve gotten over it. There’s worse things to go through. But it was the first time I was aware something was a bit amiss,” she said.

“It was pretty intense in Australia, then we moved to New York, and no one cared. So that was really good.”

After relocating to the states and changing schools, Lilly, who also has a younger brother, William, admitted she told students that her dad was in marketing because she was concerned about “friendships being in-genuine”.

“For the first year, I lied about it. I made friends, and I had to tell them about my life … I was going to Paris, I’m from Australia, and they were like, “beep, beep, beep” this is not adding up, girl,” she said.

“My best friend, who’s still my best friend, Chris, thought I was a compulsive liar. He started a whole rumour about me that I was making up my Aussie accent.”

Soon after The Great Gatsby was released in 2013, the New York Times reported that Luhrmann and Martin, who have been married for over two decades, sleep on separate floors of their townhouse in New York.

In an interview a few months after the release, Luhrmann told The Daily Telegraph that it was not just the case in New York but in all their homes, including their iconic Iona in Sydney.

“For a very simple reason: just because we’re constantly surrounded by people,” he said.

“And you know the Baz team and the CM team – they’re large teams, and they’re great, and we get together, but they all live different hours because they do completely different jobs.

“But our rule is, no matter where we are and what we do – and I said it in passing, and I’m not sure I should have because it used to be our secret – every Saturday night, we stay in a hotel.

“We have done that, I think, since we first realised public life would become a holiday you never come home from, and that was around the time of Strictly Ballroom (1992).”

Elvis actress found dead at just 44

Elvis actress Shonka Dukureh has died at the age of 44.

The shining star who made her debut in the Baz Luhrmann biopic was found by one of her children in her Nashville apartment.

Neighbours called 911 about 9.30am on July 21 and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police don’t suspect any foul play and are waiting on the autopsy to understand the cause of death.

Dukureh played Big Mama Thornton, a blues singer, in the new Elvis film.

When she got the role, she took it seriously explaining Big Mama Thornton was someone she could relate to.

"[Big Mama Thornton] was really raw with what she did and very honest and truthful and [made] music as she felt it. And I could totally relate to that," she told The Tennessean.

"I was very aware and wanting to really be intentional about making sure I was paying respect, respecting her, respecting her legacy, respecting her spirit, respecting everything about what she brought to music and understanding that I'm able to do it because she's done it and laid that foundation."

Dukureh, a self-taught vocalist, also sang alongside Doja Cat as Big Mama Thornton in the single Vegas from the Elvis soundtrack.

“I know that she was a self-taught singer, like myself,” Dukureh said of Big Mama Thornton.

“I never took a formal class, just like her. She taught herself how to sing, she taught herself how to play the drums, harmonica, and she said things like, ‘I don’t know how to read music, but I know how to sing and I know what good music sounds like.’ And I can relate to all of it.”

Dukureh was also planning on releasing her first studio album The Lady Sings the Blues.

“The project is a tribute to the blues music genre in celebration of those fierce unsung pioneering artists and musicians who paved the way for the rock’n roll music revolution,” she wrote on her website.

Images: Instagram

Review: Moulin Rouge! The Musical

More than two decades after Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! hit cinemas, the glamorous jukebox musical has made its way home to Sydney, promising to delight fans and newcomers alike.

With the show hosted exclusively by the Capitol Theatre, its neoclassical interiors have been incorporated into the show’s set design to transport the audience into the famed club. Bright show lights and decadent red furnishings play a large role in setting the scene, while chandeliers hang amid rich red drapes and glowing string lights from above, and large recreations of the iconic windmill and blue elephant frame the stage on each side.

Simon Burke is one of the shining gems in the show’s high-calibre cast. Image: Michelle Grace Hunder (Supplied)

Punctual guests are rewarded not just with finding their seats with ease and prime views and photo opportunities of the stage and set, but can also enjoy a taster of what’s to come when the show begins: pairs of performers move slowly and pose across the stage and set-pieces like living statues, moving on or disappearing altogether if you look away.

Just like the film, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is filled with medleys of well-known songs, though the mainstay tunes like ‘Come What May’ and ‘Roxanne’ are performed alongside an updated repertoire of some 70 hits from the past two decades (think Lorde’s ‘Royals’ and Rick Astley’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’, among others). Though some of the additions slot in nicely, others feel more forced and it’s hard to divorce Rick Astley’s hit from the meme it has since become.

The musical opens with the ‘Lady M’s’ played (L to R) by Ruva Ngwenya, Samantha Doldemaide, Olivia Vásquez and Christopher Scalzo. Image: Daniel Bourd (Supplied)

The show opens with the ‘Lady M’s’ - Nini, Chocolat, Babydoll and Arabia (Samantha Dodemaide, Ruva Ngwenya, Christopher Scalzo and Olivia Vásquez) - performing ‘Welcome to the Moulin Rouge’, including fan favourite ‘Lady Marmalade’, and firmly establishing the show’s raucous tone that is quickly picked up and maintained by Simon Burke AO as the club’s proprietor, Harold Zigler.

Those who have seen the film will be familiar with the show’s story, but if you’re a newcomer (like I was), here’s the rundown. The tale follows naive American songwriter Christian (Des Flanagan) who arrives in Paris and quickly falls into the Bohemian movement and in love with the star of the Moulin Rouge, Satine (Alinta Chidzey). Though his love is reciprocated reluctantly at first, their potential relationship is complicated by Satine needing to court the Duke of Monroth to save the club from financial ruin.

Alinta Chidzey’s Satine and Des Flanagan’s Christian have an electric chemistry that shines against the show’s neon lighting. Image: Michelle Grace Hunder (Supplied)

Casting is a particular highlight for the show, with a diverse list of high-calibre performers and the pairing of relative newcomer Flanagan alongside Chicago star Chidzey proving to be a welcome change from the film. James Bryers brings the Duke to life with an alluring persona that fades to an increasing air of villainy as the show progresses, while it’s hard not to be charmed by Tim Omaji and Ryan Gonzalez as Bohemian duo Toulouse-Lautrec and Santiago.

With stellar costuming (including some amazing quick changes), set design, choreography and casting, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is an all-round winner that will leave you humming its medley of tunes long after the curtain has fallen.

Though having 10 Tony Awards, an array of sophisticated pyrotechnics and other effects, and the claim of being the first Australian-produced show to open on Broadway could easily explain why it’s such an enjoyable spectacle, the real reason why seems to come down to the fact that its cast and crew have created and performed the show with a passion and energy that is incredibly infectious.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be performed at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre until September 25th, with tickets exclusively on sale through Ticketmaster’s website.

Image: Michelle Grace Hunder (Supplied)

"WOW!": Priscilla Presley's first impressions of new Elvis movie

Priscilla Presley, the late King of Rock and Roll’s former wife, has sung the praises of Baz Luhrman’s latest biopic about her ex-husband, after revealing she was invited to see it by the director himself, per 9Honey.

The 76-year-old took to Facebook to praise Luhrman’s Elvis, which is due to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in mid-May before its theatrical release on June 23, after she was invited to the screening along with Jerry Schilling, a longtime friend of Elvis.

“For those curious about the new film ELVIS, Baz Luhrmann, the director, provided a private screening for me and Jerry Schilling at Warner studios recently,” she wrote.

Image: Priscilla Presley (Facebook)

“This story is about Elvis and Colonel Parker’s relationship. It is a true story told brilliantly and creatively that only Baz, in his unique, artistic way, could have delivered.”

Priscilla praised Austin Butler, who starred as the Jailhouse Rock singer, for his “outstanding” portrayal.

“Halfway through the film Jerry and I looked at each other and said WOW!!!,” she added. “Bravo to him… he knew he had big shoes to fill. He was extremely nervous playing the part. I can only imagine.”

The Naked Gun star also had plenty of praise for Tom Hanks, who played Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker.

“What a character he was,” Priscilla reflected. “There was two sides to Colonel, Jerry and I witnessed both. The story, as we all know, does not have a happy ending. But I think you will understand a little bit more of Elvis’ journey, penned by a director who put his heart and soul and many hours into this film.”

Footage from Elvis was also shown at CinemaCon, with Butler appearing and telling the crowd about his approach to playing the famed musician.

“The main thing I set out to find was his humanity,” the 30-year-old told the crowd. “He’s one of those individuals that has been lifted up to such an iconic status that he’s almost superhuman.”

Images: Getty Images / Warner Bros (YouTube)

Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor share Moulin Rouge secrets

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been 16 years since beloved musical film Moulin Rouge first hit the big screen. Now, for the first time since 2001, its stars, Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, have reunited to share all the behind-the-scenes secrets of the film.

According to the on-screen couple, rehearsals for the film started six months before shooting began – but some of their hard work was all in vain. “I remember being in a dance studio with you and having to do all those different dances – salsa, tango [...] and we didn’t end up doing any of them [in the film],” Kidman reminisced to McGregor.

“And then the singing! I just remember you having this exquisite voice and me thinking, ‘I am never going to be able to hit these notes’. I was like, ‘Come on, practice, Nicole,’ and you’d come in and you were SO much better than me.”

In between shooting (over 1999 and 2000), the co-stars revealed they spent much of their time at the Sydney home of director Baz Luhrmann and wife Catherine Martin. “We’d have great parties! Remember those Friday nights?” Kidman asked, to which McGregor cheekily replied, “Not all of them. Don’t remember all of them.”

It also seems that the two became acquainted with the Green Fairy in preparation for the film, set in ultra-Bohemian, 1900s Paris. “We had some pretty wild nights,” Kidman recalled. “I remember Absinthe being passed out at one point, and me going ‘Is this safe?’ I was so naïve. Then going, ‘I suppose it is!’ Dancing on the tables.”

See the full actor-on-actor interview below and tell us in the comments, were you a fan of Moulin Rouge?
