Belinda Russell lifts the lid on “disappointing” Weekend Today departure

Belinda Russell stunned Weekend Today audiences early in 2023 when she made the unexpected announcement that she would be parting ways with the Nine breakfast programme.

Taking to social media in March, Russell thanked her supporters, shared her hope that she’d “brought some sunshine and joy” to their screens, and expressed her excitement for the opportunity that lay ahead.

A month later, Clint Stanaway and Jayne Azzopardi joined Weekend Today as co-hosts.

And now, Russell has spoken up about her surprise departure, suggesting in an interview with Stellar that the decision for her to leave hadn’t been one she’d seen coming, either.

“It wasn’t the start to 2023 that I was expecting, and that was disappointing,” she confessed. “It’s going to be a bit of a knock to your confidence and self-esteem but you do then think ‘well, what’s next?’

“You’ve got to trust the universe and back yourself.”

But rather than dwell on the negative side of her situation, Russell is determined to focus on the benefits, primarily what it means for herself and her three young daughters - 16-year-old Maddi, 13-year-old Tallulah, and 11-year-old Coco.

“You have setbacks in life, but it’s how you bounce back that matters,” she explained. “[It’s good] for my girls to see that and learn about resilience.”

Russell made note as well of how she hadn’t quite understood “how powerful it can be bringing a bit of hope and joy and brightening someone’s day” until someone approached her at an event and thanked Russell for getting her through Covid.

And it’s those takes that the 44-year-old brings to her ongoing work at Nine, with Russell adding that “TV is so subjective. One person might think something but then a million others might disagree. That’s the way the cookie crumbles and I’m not going to cry about it.

“It is what it is, but what’s next?”

When it comes to the future, Russell is keeping her options - and her eyes - open, explaining to Stellar that if an opportunity arose to host something in the realm of entertainment, “to have fun and explore that zest for life”, then she’d be prepared to give it a go.

And that she isn’t keeping her options limited to just television, either.

“I work at Channel Nine and for Channel Nine, but I don’t think any particular role belongs to me,” she revealed. “You hope your ability means you’re put in roles that you can shine in, but my eyes are wide open.

“If I don’t work in the TV industry any more or I leave Channel Nine, life is still going to be good.”

Images: Instagram

Rove gets candid about wife’s terminal cancer battle

Rove McManus has opened up about his late wife's battle with terminal cancer, and how the couple navigated her devastating diagnosis in the public eye.

The former talk show host spoke candidly with Jess Rowe on her podcast The Jess Rowe Big Talk Show, and shared how he would feel uncomfortable when asked questions about Belinda Emmett.

"It was a tricky thing to navigate without getting mad at people for prying," McManus admitted.

"I'd maybe give a warning and I've had times where I'd literally just sit there with my arms folded and say 'I'm not going to talk about it'."

Rove also shared the difficulties of juggling his high profile career and caring for his sick wife, all under the scrutiny of the public eye.

"At the time it was difficult because you're trying to juggle what you're dealing with in life with what you're dealing with at work," he said.

"Having to do promotion which was part of the job you have to let people know what you're doing but then people want to know what's happening at home."

The former talk show host went on to say that details about Belinda's health were reserved only for close friends and family, as he felt a lot of people asking about her wellbeing were now asking out of genuine concern.

"It's none of your business what's happening at home, I'm not here to talk about what's happening at home," he said.

"There are people who are like 'I need to know so I can write it down and tell people, or take it out of context, or make that key piece out of this whole chat that we've had'."

The star explained that he'd respond to questions about his late wife with very brief answers or no answers all together.

"I'd just shut down," he added.

"People were told that there's legitimate no-go zones and if you don't respect that then you understand that maybe the response you get is not going to be a good one, and that's a roll of the dice you take."

Belinda Emmett sadly passed away after her battle with cancer in 2006.

Rove then remarried in 2009, and he and his wife Tasma Walton have been happily married ever since.

Today show shake-up continues

Weekend Today has undergone a revamp, with two new hosts likely to join the crew in the wake of Belinda Russell’s departure.

The news comes barely two months after Sarah Abo was added to the Today show team, in what marked another shake up to the line-up at Channel Nine.

Now, Jayne Azzopardi and Clint Stanaway - who have acted as Weekend Today’s host since the beginning of 2023 - are set to helm the weekend edition, with the network reportedly close to formally announcing the update.

Stanway, for one, will have his work cut out for him with the upcoming changes for Weekend Today. The host, who appears on KIIS Melbourne’s Jase & Lauren as their newsreader, will face a seven-day week along with a new commute between the two gigs.

Prior to all-but-confirmed co-hosts Azzopardi and Stanaway, Belinda Russell and Charles Croucher ran the show - with the latter stepping away after a promotion saw him named Nine’s new political editor.

And despite Russell moving on from her position as well - with no known reason for her exit, and no mention of her departure on air - a spokesperson for the Nine network has assured that she remains “a valued member of the 9News team, which will enable her to work across all our new brands.

“We will be making further announcements soon.”

However, as these announcements roll out, many have been left to wonder what will happen to Nine’s entertainment reporter, Richard Wilkins.

The 68-year-old has primarily covered mornings and weekends since Brooke Boney’s 2019 welcome to the team, and eyebrows have raised over his apparent dwindling of his duties.

Wilkins’ career as an entertainment editor and reporter has seen him cover the likes of The Academy Awards, The Golden Globes, and the ARIA Awards among others. And in 2017, Wilkins celebrated the milestone of his 30th anniversary with the Nine Network.

He is well-known for his daily features and Hollywood interviews, however, recently one of Wilkins’ weekend segments gave the impression of being limited to his audience, with the reporter only covering what people should watch, as well as a brief interview with a star from the hit HBO show The Last of Us.

Images: Getty

Roger Federer ends speculation with massive call

Roger Federer has reportedly confirmed that he will be playing at the 2020 Dubai Open, ending speculations that 2019 will be his last year on tour.

After winning his 100th ATP title at the Dubai Open last weekend, Federer reportedly told a tournament official that he will be returning next year.

The tournament sponsor seemed to confirm the news during the official presentation.

“We congratulate Roger Federer on his fantastic achievement in winning 100 titles, and winning here in Dubai for the eighth time, more than any other player,” said Colm McLoughlin, executive vice chairman and CEO of Dubai Duty Free.

“It is remarkable that his first title here came as long ago as 2003, and we look forward to welcoming both Federer and our ladies champion Belinda Bencic again in 2020.”

With the Sunday win over Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, Federer took his career tally to 100 ATP titles, making him the second man in the Open Era to do so after American legend Jimmy Connors.

Welcome to the “ Triple Digit” tournament victory club @rogerfederer — I’ve been a bit lonely- glad to have the company !!!
— Jimmy Connors (@JimmyConnors) 2 March 2019

Rumours of Federer’s retirement have started since February, when the 37-year-old expressed his interest in returning to a clay court after a three-year hiatus. Many speculated that Federer aimed to take the French Open title in June before hanging up his racquet.

However, Federer denied this before his opening round at the Dubai Championships.

“This doesn’t mean this is my last clay-court season, whatever, or I had to play one more time before I retired. That was not the thinking,” the 20-time Grand Slam champion told reporters.

“That’s not the reason why I’m putting the clay back on. It was purely based on I would just like to play. We can always readjust the schedule accordingly depending how I play the clay. The calendar is always flexible.”

Belinda Emmett's parents break silence about Rove

Belinda Emmett was the television star who stole our heart's with her beautiful smile and fighting spirit. A decade has passed since she was cruelly taken from this world, and as her family and friends continue to mourn her passing with emotional tributes on social media, her parents have talked about her death in an interview with New Idea.

The exclusive interview saw the actress’ parents open up about life without their beloved daughter, and how they’re still in touch with her TV star widower Rove McManus.

The 43-year-old comedian married Belinda in 2005 while she was still battling terminal breast cancer, and reportedly struggled to come to terms with her passing.

And while he’s entered another relationship with 43-year-old actress Tasma Walton, Rove reportedly stays in contact with Belinda’s parents, who have developed a special bond with his three-year-old daughter Ruby.

“Rove’s got his own wife and we respect that, but we stay close,” says Belinda’s father Michael, who said that he’s met Ruby.

“It’s nice to have the little ones around. We’ve got our own grandchildren and they’ve all grown. The oldest is at university, and you do miss those little children. So it’s lovely to have (Ruby) in our lives as well. It’s not in a huge way, but it’s pretty wonderful.”

Michael also touched on how bewildered he was that such a healthy person could be struck down by cancer so early, saying, “We have a memorial seat for her down near Ettalong, by the playground, where she used to jog and swim.

“She never smoked in her life, and only occasionally had a wine. For her to be struck down is probably the most remarkable, ridiculous thing. She did all the right things, ate the right foods. For her to be struck down is a travesty of justice. But she did more in her 32 years than most people do in 90.”

Hero image credit: Twitter / Australian World‏

90-year-old war veteran reunites with his 4-year-old best friend for a birthday party

Two best friends were reunited for a birthday party over the weekend. Erling Kindem’s 90th birthday was celebrated with his friends and family in Minnesota, but the most special guest was his best friend – four-year-old Emmett Rychner.

Emmett and Erling became friends two years ago, when they were neighbours. Emmett wandered into Erling’s yard, where the World War II veteran was working in his tomato patch. From there, a friendship blossomed between the unlikely pair.

Together the two would tend to their tomatoes (Erling planted Emmet his very own plant), race their matching John Deere ride-on movers (Emmett’s parents bought a miniature one for his birthday), play croquet (Erling found a set in his garage and surprised Emmett one afternoon), and rode bikes together.

When the winter came, and snow piled up outside their houses, Erling used a blower to clear a path from his door to Emmett’s.

However the two best friends were torn apart last year when Emmett’s family moved to a larger house, and Erling moved to a retirement facility. Emmett’s parents take him to visit his friend regularly so they can take rides in the elevator and run races in the carpark.

At Erling’s birthday, Emmett presented his friend with two packages, each containing a set of dog tags the friends could wear. One tag read, “Emmett & Erling” and the other, “Friends Forever” I Norweigan, which Erling learned as a young boy.

At the end of the party, Erling told Emmett, “You come back again.”

“I will eventually,” little Emmet replied.

Related links:

The toy tree bringing smiles to a Brisbane suburb

This grandfather walks 55km each day to work

Meet the therapy dogs helping kids learn how to read
