Real reason why Paul Burt was sacked

A senior source from Channel Seven has revealed the real reason why Paul Burt was sacked, just days after he unleashed at his former employer live on-air.

An insider at the network reportedly told the Daily Mail that Burt, who worked at Seven for more than a decade, was sacked because focus group research found he was unpopular with audiences.

"Paul Burt was sacked after extensive audience research across the Queensland market that identified he was one of the least-liked presenters on-air, with the dreaded 'switch-off' factor," the source said.

The research had been conducted in the first quarter of 2024.

The source also told the Daily Mail that perceived audience appeal was an important consideration when deciding who would be let go from the program and "it's not like names were picked out of a hat."

"Networks spend a fortune on polling and focus groups to identify emerging talent and test long-serving presenters," they said.

"The audience decides who reads the news."

Burt did not accept the research, telling the Daily Mail: "I mean, these people are going to try and cover their backs."

"I think if they're looking at numbers like that, they might want to change the people who are giving them those numbers.

"Because I'm on the ground, I hear what people say and I understand what they want. I've been doing it now for 28 years."

Daily Mail also obtained a farewell email that Burt sent to his colleagues at the network on Monday afternoon.

"Hey everyone, never thought I'd be writing this email anytime soon, but here we go," the email reportedly began.

"First and foremost, I want to say thank you to everyone who I have worked directly with, you have all been incredibly awesome and do sensational jobs and deserve far more recognition than you get.

"Secondly, those who reached out to me after the news over the weekend and today to 'check in' on me and pass on your kind words, wow, it's been very humbling so thank you."

Burt also reportedly did not attend his farewell last Friday and had told management he would not be attending it.

"I'm not that kind of guy," he told the Daily Mail.

"I don't want there to be any hoo-ha. I don't need a cake. I'm not interested."

He also said that he did not wanted to cut into his work schedule on a busy Friday evening when he did about 10 live crosses to the newsroom.

"I don't want to give up my time to get back to the office when I'm on location," he said.

"I didn't want to stand there and get, 'Here's a cake, congratulations, goodbye and thank you for your time'. I never asked for it."

He also said: "Don't get me wrong, I really admire the network. I love the network. I truly do.

"Unfortunately, I just think at this point in time, things could have been handled a bit differently in certain sectors of the newsroom.

"If you have three of your best-selling items in a shop, do you get rid of those three and just deal with what's left over? As a business person, I don't think you do."

Seven West Media, which also owns the West Australian, is slashing 150 editorial staff in a round of redundancies, which has affected other big names like newsreader Sharyn Ghidella.

Images: Seven

Axed weatherman's blunt farewell message live on-air

Weatherman Paul Burt has lashed out at Channel 7 in an awkward final report after he was axed by the network.

The veteran weatherman was recently cut by Seven after almost three decades in the industry as part of a cost-cutting move, and he took aim at the network in his final sign off on Saturday.

“Hello everybody yes it is my last weather for the network tonight,” he began.

“Let’s get straight into it everyone because it’s the most important thing is your Sunday and not me.”

He then detailed the weather outlook before presenter Samantha Heathwood farewelled him.

Burt then thanked viewers for their "trust, loyalty, and support" and thanked his family before unleashing on the network.

“If I’d had the opportunity I wouldn’t have wanted to go this way,” Burt said. “It’s what happens when you get sacked”.

The network then cut to footage for Burt, who has been at Seven since 2013, presenting various segments over the years, including him delivering the weather from a helicopter during floods.

In an interview with The Australian, Burt revealed that he had only been given “55 seconds to say my goodbyes”.

“I really don’t understand it, why people are being treated this way,” Burt said.

“It was a shock, I was told to come in and have a meeting which I did and I was told my contract was not being renewed. It was rather embarrassing for my wife and children. They found out before I could even tell them. Obviously things get leaked.

“Some of the decisions made lately are quite harsh. I’ve lost a lot of friends who have been made redundant or got the sack.”

Burt wasn't the only one made redundant in the network's cost-cutting move. Veterans including Robert Ovadia, Sharyn Ghidella, Andrew Frampton and seasoned Melbourne crime reporter Cameron Baud have all gone.

Images: Channel 7

"Kick cancer's ass": Ryan Reynolds shares potentially life saving surgery

Ryan Reynolds shared the news he had a “subtle polyp” on his colon during his first colonoscopy.

He broadcasted the entire experience in order to destigmatise the procedure and raise awareness, especially among men.

The famed actor, aged 45, and his Wrexham soccer club co-chairman, Rob McElhenney, decided to partner up with Lead From Behind, a colon cancer awareness organisation, aiming to draw attention to the procedure.

In a Youtube video posted to Reynold’s page this week, the two explained they wanted to prove how the “simple step” can “save lives.”

“I would never normally have any medical procedure put on camera and then shared,” Reynolds said.

“But it’s not every day that you can raise awareness about something that will most definitely save lives. That’s enough motivation for me to let you in on a camera being shoved up my ass.”

During the procedure, Reynolds found out that he found an “extremely subtle polyp” on the right side of his colon, which he had removed.

“This was potentially lifesaving for you — I’m not kidding, I’m not being overly dramatic,” the doctor told the actor as he showed off images of the tissue. “This is exactly why you do this. You had no symptoms.”

As for McElhenney, his doctor revealed they found three polyps that “were not a big deal, but certainly a good thing that we found them early and removed them.”

“Colon cancer is preventable,” a message read across a black screen at the end of the video. “If you’re 45 years or older, ask your doctor about getting a colonoscopy. And help Rob and Ryan kick cancer’s ass.”

Image: Youtube

Hugh Jackman receives hilarious 50th birthday message from actor Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds has delivered a very special message to Australian actor Hugh Jackman

The Deadpool star and the Wolverine actor have been at a playful head for years now, but for Jackman’s birthday Reynolds has pulled out all guns so the former Marvel movie star can return to his character and appear next to Reynolds for a film.

Reynolds kept the trolling going with a 50th birthday message for Jackman during his The Man. The Music. The Show. concert at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

In a surprise video posted to social media, Jackman shared a hilarious Reynolds wearing a birthday party hat starting off a sweet message to his friend.

“Hello Hugh. Sally Field opens up about her controlling relationship with Burt Reynolds

Sally Field is revealing more about her one-time relationship with the late Burt Reynolds in her new memoir, In Pieces.

Released on Tuesday, the book exposed the pair's tumultuous relationship as Field described the actor – who she dated for several years since the beginning of 1977 – as controlling and distant.

“By the time we met, the weight of his stardom had become a way for Burt to control everyone around him, and from the moment I walked through the door, it was a way to control me. We were a perfect match of flaws,” she wrote. “Blindly I fell into a rut that had long ago formed in my road, a pre-programmed behaviour as if in some past I had pledged a soul binding commitment to this man.”

Reynolds, who first met Field on the set of Smokey and the Bandit, told Vanity Fair in 2015 that Field was the “love of my life".

“I was always flattered when he said that,” Field told Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America. “But he was a complicated man.”

Field has previously spoken to The New York Times, saying she was “glad” Reynolds wasn’t around to read her book. Reynolds died on September 6 at the age of 82.

“This would hurt him,” she said in the interview last week. “I felt glad that he wasn’t going to read it, he wasn’t going to be asked about it, and he wasn’t going to have to defend himself or lash out, which he probably would have.”

Field opened up about her dark past in her book as she revealed that she had been molested by her stepfather during her childhood, something that later on affected the relationship she shared with Reynolds.

She told The New York Times that her time with Reynolds was “confusing and complicated, and not without loving and caring, but really complicated and hurtful to me.”

Here’s why Burt Reynolds has left his only son out of his will

One would think that Burt Reynolds would have left all his assets and prized possessions in the hands of his only son, Quinton Reynolds, but that isn’t the case.

The late Hollywood actor has left his son's name out of his will, and named his niece, Nancy Lee Brown Hess, as the trustee of his estate.

At the peak of his career, Reynolds used to demand an upwards of US$10 million per movie but at the time of his death on September 6, he was only worth a reported US$5 million.

According to court documents released by The Blast, Reynolds officially signed off on the will in 2011, putting all his life earnings into a trust which will be managed by Hess.

But it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the actor's 30-year-old son, as his only child with ex-wife and actress, Loni Anderson, Quinton will still benefit from his father’s decision. The document states that the actor created the trust so that money will continuously be put aside for him. This is done to avoid estate taxes.

“I intentionally omit him from this, my Last Will and Testament, as I have provided for him during my lifetime in my Declaration of Trust,” Reynolds stated in the legal document.

The Hollywood actor tragically died after a heart attack in a Florida hospital earlier this month. The 82-year-old was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his death.

“It is with a broken heart that I said goodbye to my uncle today,” Hess told Page Six in a statement at the time. “My uncle was not just a movie icon; he was a generous, passionate and sensitive man, who was dedicated to his family, friends, fans and acting students.”

Tony Jones blunt slapdown on Q&A

Q&A host Tony Jones and Liberal Senator Linda Reynolds didn’t hold back in a fiery on-air spat about the future funding of the ABC.

Their exchange began when a member of the audience asked how an initiative, supported by some in the Liberal party to privatise the public broadcaster at a conference on the weekend, could be beneficial to the Australian public.

“Why do you think this is a beneficial decision when the ABC is the most trusted news source and broadcasting corporation in Australia?” the audience member asked. “If it was privatised, how would you guarantee its independence?”

Senator Reynolds responded to the question by saying that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull had “made it very clear” the ABC won’t be privatised.

“I was there at the conference over the weekend and I heard the debate on the motion and, from my perspective, I think it’s not so much about privatising the ABC which is not going to happen, but $1.2 billion of your taxpayers’ money goes into the ABC every year.

“I think it’s valid for us in Parliament and for all of you to actually question whether that money is being best spent.

“So, for example, I’m from the state of Western Australia and I hear frequently from people in rural and regional areas in Western Australia that they don’t feel that they get enough service from the ABC.”

She then turned to Mr Jones and challenged Q&A to visit Western Australia, which she claimed they hadn’t done in “about six or seven years”.

“You might have to increase our funding just a little bit, Linda,” Mr Jones replied. “That’s one of the problems, I’m afraid.”

The audience erupted into laughter and cheers at his quick response as the senator continued to probe the host.

“I think in $1.2 billion you can find a few dollars,” she said.

However, Mr Jones replied saying that there were many services the organisation had to cover.

“We’d love to do that, so write to the managing director and see if they can find the money in the diminishing budget,” he said.

“Come to Port Hedland and the Pilbara and where 40 per cent of our nation’s wealth has been generated and probably 40 per cent of your salary comes from Western Australia,” Senator Reynolds said in one last jab at Mr Jones.

On Saturday, the Liberal federal council passed a motion with a two-to-one majority to call on the coalition to sell off the ABC, except in regional areas.

However, the following day, Malcolm Turnbull said the ABC will always be in public hands, after members of the Liberal Party voted to sell it off.

“The ABC will always be in public hands. It will never be sold. That is my commitment. It is a public broadcaster. It always has been and it always will be,” Mr Turnbull told reporters in Canberra.

On Q&A, the other panellists were largely supportive of the ABC remaining publicly funded.

“The motion we saw at the Liberal Party Federal Council on the weekend, it’s not an isolated incident,” said Tim Watts, a Labor member for the western Melbourne seat of Gellibrand.

“Five Liberal Party senators have spoken in favour of privatising the ABC before.

“It sounds insane. It sounds like a crazy idea, but this is the mainstream of the modern Liberal Party.

“There was a time when conservatives cared about institutions. They cared about the things that we needed to sustain a democracy. Now it’s just off-the-shelf ideology from America.”

Senator Reynolds responded by saying the claim that the Coalition’s ideology comes from America “doesn’t make sense”, adding that the ABC plays a “really important role”.

“But that said, it is still publicly funded,” she added. “What we want to do is, like we do with any other organisation that’s publicly funded, is keep challenging it to make sure it is still serving the purposes for which we fund it and for which we require.”

What are your thoughts? Carrie Fisher’s brother reveals her one big regret

Shortly before her death in December 2016, Carrie Fisher revealed for the first time in her memoir that she had a brief on-set affair with Star Wars co-star Harrison Ford.

Carrie’s brother, Todd, has now revealed in his new book, My Girls: A Lifetime with Carrie and Debbie, that Carrie rued the day she told the public about her three-month fling, which she detailed in her own autobiography, The Princess Diarist.

In the book, Todd writes that his and Carrie’s mother, Debbie Reynolds, didn’t know about Carrie’s affair with Ford when she was a single 19-year-old and he was a married 33-year-old father of two.

Todd says that Reynolds disapproved of both the affair and of Carrie’s decision to make it public.

Carrie eventually told Reynolds: “You’re right. I shouldn’t have told that story.”

At the time of her memoir’s release, Carrie describe their first intimate experience as clumsy.

"I was so inexperienced, but I trusted something about him. He was kind," she said.

"It was so intense," Fisher told People during an interview to promote the book.

"It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend."

Carrie died in December 2016 of cardiac arrest, with Debbie passing away just a day later.

In his book, Todd explains how he saw what happened: “The common theory about Mum’s passing was that, after losing Carrie, Debbie Reynolds died of a broken heart. Take it from the son who was there, who knew her better than anyone else on earth — that’s simply not true. Debbie Reynolds willed herself right off this planet to personally see to it that Carrie would never be alone.”
