Aussie couple set to give away $3.5 billion

Billionaire Canva co-founder Cameron Adams and his wife Lisa Miller have pledged to give away at least half of their estimated $7 billion fortune, calling on Australia’s wealthiest to follow suit in the fight against environmental degradation.

The philanthropic commitment will see the couple funnel significant resources into green initiatives via The Giving Pledge and Founders Pledge – two global efforts that encourage billionaires and entrepreneurs to donate a substantial portion of their wealth to impactful causes.

“Nature nourishes us, sustains us, inspires us and shapes how we live,” Mr Adams wrote in his letter to The Giving Pledge, the global charity initiative co-founded by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates. “But today, many of the ecosystems that support our lives are being destroyed – and our future depends on how we choose to save them.”

Adams, who co-founded the homegrown tech success Canva in 2013, and Miller, a former zoologist turned entrepreneur, say their focus will be on reversing biodiversity loss and restoring natural ecosystems, which they see as critical to the survival of life on Earth.

“Philanthropy is more than charity; it is a means of addressing systemic issues, driving meaningful change and ensuring that future generations inherit a world rich in possibility and biodiversity,” Mr Adams said.

The couple’s wealth is largely tied up in Canva equity, with the company currently valued at around AU$49.5 billion (US$32 billion) and reportedly considering a NASDAQ listing in 2026. Canva’s other co-founders, Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht, joined The Giving Pledge in 2021.

The new pledge by Adams and Miller follows earlier environmental commitments by the couple, including the establishment of Wedgetail Ventures, an eco-investment fund backing conservation projects and local communities. They also own a 5000-hectare property in Tasmania, now being developed into a conservation research centre in partnership with the University of Tasmania.

“In recent years, we have grown in our confidence that these are issues worth fighting for, and that we can make a unique contribution with the funds and skills that we have,” Mr Adams said.

Lisa Miller echoed the sentiment in joint statements, underscoring the importance of bold, scalable efforts in the environmental space. “We must not only halt nature’s decline but also begin its restoration,” she said.

Through Founders Pledge, the couple joins a growing network of tech entrepreneurs including Spotify’s Magnus Hult, Culture Amp’s Jon Williams, and Klarna’s Niklas Adalberth. The organisation has attracted over 2,000 members across 45 countries, with more than US$1.5 billion (AU$2.3 billion) already donated from pledged funds.

“Entrepreneurs are uniquely placed to transform the world,” Founders Pledge states. “We advise on, facilitate and maximise the impact of our members’ giving.”

The Adams-Miller announcement adds to a growing number of high-profile philanthropic moves by Australian billionaires. Mining magnate Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest and his former wife Nicola were among the first Australians to sign on to The Giving Pledge back in 2013.

“As a family, we agreed many years ago to give away the majority of our wealth,” the Forrests said at the time. “We felt that if our children were to inherit considerable wealth, it would only get in the way of them striving for and achieving their best.”

Adams hopes his and Miller’s decision will spark a wider cultural shift among Australia’s wealthiest. “We hope others will recognise the power of philanthropy to create lasting environmental and societal impact by joining us in this commitment,” he said.

Image: Wedgetail

Cameron McCarthy's family break silence

Cameron McCarthy's have broken their silence following the former AFL player's shock death at just 29.

The former Fremantle and GWS player died last Thursday after he was found unresponsive by paramedics at a house in Lake Coogee, Perth.

McCarthy's family have shared a heartfelt obituary in The West Australian a week after his death.

“CAMERON ALEX: Our beautiful son and brother, Cameron,” they wrote.

“It is with heavy hearts that we’ve had to say goodbye for now.

“A huge hole now exists in our lives. It will never be the same without you. Through the ups and downs we all rode with you, and you knew that we loved you so much.

“You lit up every room with that gorgeous smile, and we will cherish our memories with you forever.

“Until we meet again. Rest peacefully. Love you always, Dad, Mum, Jessica, Hannah, Drew, Ryan, Poppy.”

Just two days ago, West Coast defender Tom Barrass also shared a heartbreaking tribute to his best mate.

“Last week, this earth lost a beautiful man named Cameron McCarthy,” Barrass wrote.

“A man who wasn’t concerned with money or power, instead creativity and experience. A man who approached all things with energy and excitement, as if viewing them for the first time.

“A man whose presence will be sorely missed, but whose outlook and opinion can be heard any time we wish to listen. Enjoy the journey and lean in. Trust your intuition and have conviction, as that’s all you’ve really got in the end.

“Men like these are hard to come by; so full of love, kindness and laughter. But that’s why they’re so special, and the lessons they teach last a lifetime.

“I’m gonna miss you Universal Brother. Say Gday to the big fella for me and put in a good word please. Rest in Peace," he concluded his post, with AFL players sending their love and condolences in the comment section.

Images: Instagram

Adam Goodes opens up about major family loss

Dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes has opened up about his late mother in a candid interview on the Get Real with Rio WeAre8 series.

Speaking to former English professional footballer Rio Ferdinand, host of the show, Goodes revealed the heartbreaking news that his mother had passed away of a heart attack in February 2022.

“She was 62, man,” Goodes said.

He went on to share that his mother - Lisa May Goodes - had had “a really tough life”, having been the single parent to Goodes and his two younger brothers for “most of her life”. And that while she “did an incredible job … she had a lot of trauma from her childhood”.

“She was taken away when she was five,” he explained, “put into a white family, like a lot of her siblings were, and she didn’t know at the time that she was one of 10 [children].

“That’s the reason why I wasn’t connected to my Aboriginality [early on] because of that disconnect when she was five.”

Goodes admitted that he had often considered what his family’s life might have looked like had his mother not experienced systemic racism and its associated practices during her early years, when she was a child of the Stolen Generation.

And now, with children of his own and a third on the way with wife Natalie, his perspective has widened, with Goodes confessing that his own experiences have influenced how he looks at his mum’s past.

“It just breaks my heart to think that she was living in fear her whole life that someone could knock on the door and take her kids away at any moment if she wasn’t doing the right thing by us kids,” he said.

“So if I could go back and change anything, I would just love to have gone back to my mum’s life, and in that moment, change the fact that she was taken [away from her family]. And how just that one sliding door moment might have changed the world and life that I had.

“And if that meant I may never have played professional sport, if it meant I might not even be alive today, just that moment that meant my mum was still connected to her family and didn’t have to live the life that she did, and how tough it was for her.

“I’d love to be able to do that just for the old girl.”

He then revealed that every move he makes now is weighed against the time he can spend with his family, given how he had “sacrificed having children” until he retired from the AFL.

“That’s really important to me because I sacrificed having children when I was playing,” Goodes said. “I had my first kid when I was 39, I’d been retired for four years, I was ready to dedicate my time and energy to something else.

“My family, even though I didn’t think of it at the time, the sacrifice I made during my football career, they’re now benefitting because of that. Not only from the success but from the financial benefits of the sacrifices that I made - being able to buy my mum a first house that she’s ever owned.

“I’m grateful I did make those decisions at those times. It wasn’t easy to do that.”

Images: Getty

Kamahl demands apology over racial tweet

Singer Kamahl has demanded that radio host Philip Adams issue him a public apology over the racial tweet he made in December where Adams dubbed Kamahl an “honorary white” over his relationship with the late cricketer Donald Bradman.

Adams claims to have contacted Kamahl, who says he has been “humiliated” by the incident, but the Malaysian-born singer claims the apology never made it to him.

“My understanding is that Mr Adams has written to Kamahl apologising for that,” ABC boss David Anderson said of the situation. “Privately written to him, apologising for that.”

As reported by The Australian, Kamahl had plenty to say in response to Anderson.

“I resent the fact that you have used the incident on public record as a defence of how you and your management have effectively dealt with this issue,” he wrote. “You stated on the public record that Adams had in fact reached out to me to apologise personally for his highly inappropriate comment.

“Mr Anderson, let me clarify, the only action that Adams has taken to date in dealing with this issue is to block me on Twitter and double down on his initial slur in which he referred to me as an ‘honorary white’.”

“Bradman refused to meet Mandela?” Adams posted in a now deleted tweet.

“Why do you think Sir Donald Bradman refused to meet Mandela?” Kamahl responded. “Why do you think the greatest ever 'spotsman' welcomed me at his home from August 1988 every year, till he left us in 2001?”

Why do you think Sir Donald Bradman refused to meet Mandela ? Why do you think the greatest ever 'spotsman' welcomed me at his home from August 1988 every year, till he left us in 2001?
He also left me letters he wrote every year.
Why Phillip ?@OfficialKamahl @PhillipAdams_1

— Kamahl AM (@OfficialKamahl) December 26, 2022

“Clearly, Kamahl, he made you an Honorary White. Whereas one of the most towering political figures of the 20th century was deemed unworthy of Bradman's approval," Adams fired back.

Kamahl went on to tell Adams that responded he “may be white, but oh your soul is black!”

The term ‘honorary white’ is said to have originated during South Africa’s Apartheid regime in the 1960s to grant the rights and the privileges of white people to those who would otherwise be considered ‘non-white’ at the time.

Many share Kamahl’s belief that Adams’ apology should be as public as his initial words.

As reporter Peter Ford said on 6PR Breakfast, “you get the feeling that they told him to write this apology and send it to get him off our backs and it’d all go away, and I don’t think that’s good enough.”

Kamahl and his followers have been vocal on Twitter about his desire for an appropriate apology, and the impact of Adams’ words, but only time will tell if Adams is to step up and offer one.

Images: Twitter

Titanic at 25: like the ship itself, James Cameron’s film is a bit of a wreck

When it was released 25 years ago, James Cameron’s Titanic was enormous. It made stars of its two leads, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Reviews overwhelmingly heaped praise not only on the technical aspects of the film but also the acting and storyline.

In 1997, Titanic was, in the oft-quoted line from the film, “king of the world!”

At the time we were all swept up in the romantic tale of Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater, the star-crossed lovers whose infatuation on the doomed ship ended when Jack made the ultimate sacrifice, freezing in the icy Atlantic to save his truly beloved.

But over the years, critics and audiences alike have re-examined the film and found, like the ship itself, it is a bit of a wreck.

When it was originally released, a small number of critics deeply disliked Titanic.

Today, more and more people are re-evaluating their originally positive response to the film and are changing their opinions. From the characters, to the story, to the ending, there are a number of issues with Titanic that appear questionable at best, and deeply unsettling at worst.

It’s even gone far enough that some critics are calling it the worst film ever made – but that may be taking it too far.

An unhealthy obsession

At the beginning of the film, we find upper-class Rose being forced into marriage with “Cal” Hockley by her widowed mother, Ruth, to save the family fortune and keep their status in society. So unhappy with her situation, Rose decides to jump from the ship. She is rescued by the penniless drifter, Jack.

So begins the plot of the film as the pair constantly run and hide from the authorities to be together.

Jack’s relentless pursuit of Rose around the ship is obsessive. We learn virtually nothing about the character of Jack Dawson apart from him being a poor orphaned artist, he wants Rose, and he will do anything to have her – even though they’ve only known each other for a few days.

Is this a healthy relationship?

Rose is only 17 years old and possibly too inexperienced to identify a stalker or manipulator. Influenced by Jack’s charm, Rose turns against her mother, fiancé and pretty much everyone else in her life. And how could she not? On board the Titanic, almost every wealthy and upper-class person is portrayed as a villain while the people in third class, or steerage, are shown as a salt-of-the-earth, decent and virtuous. Rose’s fiancé is at every turn just a mean, callous man who cares nothing for Rose or for anyone but himself.

Even when the ship is sinking, the officers on board discriminate against the steerage passengers, ensuring only the well-to-do board the lifeboats – just one of the many historical inaccuracies.

All of the upper-class characters we meet on Titanic get little screen time, apart from when they are being desultory, cruel or malicious. They appear two-dimensional, lacking meaningful emotions.

True love?

One of the main themes of the film, that true love goes on beyond death, also appears overly sentimental and simplistic in modern times. We understand young teens often lack maturity in relationships and often mistake lust or infatuation for love.

Would Jack and Rose’s relationship have lasted if Jack had survived? He was broke with no visible means of support. She was 17. Their love affair is a fantasy of no responsibility while on board the ship. Where would it have gone in the real world?

This directs us to another issue. Rose survives the sinking and goes on to marry another man and have a family with children and grandchildren. However, when Rose dies at the end of the film her “spirit” descends to the wreck of the ship where she is reunited with the “love of her life” Jack.

Surely this is a slap in the face to her deceased husband and family. She lived her entire life with these people, yet the film ends up with Rose in the afterlife with someone she knew for a few days.

Filled with holes

Often, critiquing films with modern sensibilities can be unfair. However, Titanic includes a fair number of issues that, even considered with the social mores of the time in which it was made, appear problematic.

This does not take away from the enjoyment many people have gained from the film over the years, and its technical brilliance. But it does give increased weight to the critics who spoke against the film in 1997.

Like the ship itself, the film Titanic is a relic of a different time. Revisiting it can make you wonder why you never noticed the holes in it in the first place.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

James Cameron caught giving fans the bird after being booed

Legendary director James Cameron has been caught flipping off the fans who booed him for not signing autographs over the weekend.

After the famed director attended a screening of his new film, Avatar: The Way of Water, in LA, he refused to stop for a crowd of autograph-seeking fans.

Cameron, 68, powered past the group of people asking him to sign their items, which caused the crowd to turn on him and shout.

“F**k Avatar,” one person yelled, as Cameron was escorted into a black car.

As the cheering and jeering continued, the Titanic filmmaker slightly rolled down his tinted window to reveal his middle finger.

Fans were divided over the interaction, with some calling him a “jerk” and “annoying.” Others dubbed him “a legend” and argued that the people booing him weren’t real fans.

“They were fake fans ready to resell autographed stuff 100%. The embarrassing way they reacted to his refusal proves that. Jim was right for ignoring them let’s be serious,” one person wrote on Twitter.

Check out the footage and see for yourself.

James Cameron flips off crowd who boos him for not signing autographs #AvatarTheWayOfWater
pic.twitter.com/frDDoY4alM

— Culture Crave 🍿 (@CultureCrave) December 18, 2022

Images: Twitter

Cameron Daddo on the best marriage advice he’s received

Cameron Daddo and wife Alison Brahe appeared on a podcast together this week, and together shared some of the best advice they’ve received during their 30-year marriage.

Appearing on Nova’s Separate Bathrooms podcast, during a segment titled ‘30 Lessons in 30 Years’, the beloved couple opened up about their lengthy marriage and what advice has and hasn’t worked for them.

One piece of advice that Daddo considers paramount is “learn how to apologise”. Struggling to hold back tears, Daddo explained, "We were told by Reverend Brian that married us. He said you're going to hurt your partner the most of anyone in your life. In my case, it's probably true.

"So it's a good idea to learn how to apologise, mean it and then make the necessary actions, so you don't repeat it. That's a good lesson."

Brahe said that being able to have difficult conversations has done wonders for their relationship. She elaborated, "My next one is have the hard conversations, particularly the ones about the relationship. And that's what's worked for us.

“Having those hard conversations is a little bit like labour and birth, where you go, 'Oh, it's just agonising to have this. Where's this guy?' We keep pushing through, and guaranteed we've always come out the other side feeling better."

Daddo confessed that those conversations often leave him exhausted, but that they were important for any relationship to move forward. "There needs to be action after the hard conversations. Because if you're just having hard conversations and then not doing anything afterwards, they become harder the next time.

“We've had this conversation and nothing happened. So just I think an addendum to that is have the hard conversations and then take action based on what you resolve or where you get to afterwards,” he said.

The couple got married in 1991 after dating for just three months, and have three children together: daughters Lotus and Bodhi, and son River. They’ve been through their share of ups and downs, with Daddo admitting to having an affair in 1994. Fortunately, the lessons they’ve learned helped them come through the other side with their relationship intact.

Image: El Pics/Getty Images

Dear Evan Hansen is an inspiring and entertaining film

When Dear Evan Hansen was released on Broadway over five years ago it became a generation defining Broadway phenomenon. Now we have the film version with Ben Platt reprising the main role and he does this with breathtaking results.

Some critics have complained it's not realistic for Platt to play Evan Hansen in the film version because Platt’s now 27 years old and it’s difficult for him to play an anxious, isolated high schooler. But does it matter that he’s a bit older now?

Well, from an audience's point of view, it doesn’t and when Platt starts to sing those amazing songs, we can see why he won an Emmy and a Grammy for the Broadway production. As well, we have the song-writing team from La La Land and The Greatest Showman writing the songs and everything works.

Plus, the serious nature of this film – the fact it deals with teenage suicide and how hard it is for some people to simply get by – makes it an important film and one which could help a lot of people. This makes Dear Evan Hansen an important and inspiring film.

The storyline

The gist of the story is that Evan Hansen is a high school loner, awkward and inept with his only friend being the equally nerdy Jared (Nik Dodani).

He shows up on the first day of school with a cast after breaking his arm, and he’s been instructed by his therapist to write “Dear Evan Hansen” letters to himself in order to work out his issues connecting with other people.

Fellow student Connor Murphy (Colton Ryan) has a run-in with Evan and grabs one of said letters from a printer. A few days later, Connor’s mother Cynthia and stepfather Larry (Amy Addams, Danny Pino) show up at Evan’s school with the letter saying that Connor committed suicide, and they’ve determined that the letter “to Evan” was his suicide note.

Instead of telling them the truth, Evan concocts an elaborate lie about being friends with Connor in order to sooth his parents’ misgivings about his death. In order to maintain that illusion, Evan continues to lie to them as well as to Connor’s sister, Zoe (Kaitlyn Dever from Book Smart), and his lie just snowballs.

Pretty soon, the school’s social justice activist Alana (Amandla Stenberg) has up the Connor Project so that others who feel alone can feel seen and heard, and Evan has become hugely popular at school.

But this doesn’t last forever and Hansen has to face up to his lie later on.

The singing really does work

Although a lot of the focus of the singing is on Platt and his quite beautiful voice, each of the other primary cast have some amazing singing moments, whether it’s Stenberg doing a song about feeling anonymous like Connor or the song, Requiem, which shows off the amazing singing prowess of Devo, Pino, and even Adams.

Julianne Moore, who plays Evan’s hardworking single mother, even gets an absolutely epic number towards the end which will get the waterworks flowing if nothing beforehand has done that job.

The showstopper is You Will be Found

The movie’s absolutely showstopper is the number You Will be Found and it’s another great example of how the songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul of La La Land fame translate so well to the screen. In fact, this song alone shows you why many people became obsessed with the Broadway version of Dear Evan Hansen.

The film is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being A Wallflower, Wonder).and he shows here he has a strong grasp on social media, cyber bullying, viral videos, and even cancel culture and how it destroys people, including families.

Dear Evan Hansen will be in cinemas by December 9

The film brings out many emotions and one of the reasons is because as we watch it, we can relate to so much of what Hansen is going through. The characters and the story feel very real, which is as much a testament to Chbosky as a filmmaker, but also his cast and the people behind the original musical.

There’s a good reason why Dear Evan Hansen was such a success on Broadway, and a great deal of that is retained by the movie.

Dear Evan Hansen will be showing in cinemas by December 9 and there’ve been no announcements as to whether it will stream.

Images: UPI
