"We're giving them weapons": Charlotte O'Brien's parents call for social media ban

<p>The parents of a young girl who took her own life after being bullied have joined a campaign to raise the age limit for social media.</p> <p>Charlotte O'Brien was a student at Santa Sabina College in Sydney’s inner west, where she dealt with relentless bullying which led to the 12-year-old's tragic death. </p> <p>Now, her parents Mat Howard and Kelly O’Brien appeared on <em>60 Minutes </em>to ask “how many more Charlottes do we need to lose” before action was taken to protect kids from harm online. </p> <p>When asked if she believed Charlotte would still be alive if social media was off limits to young children, Ms O’Brien replied: “Absolutely”.</p> <p>“My personal opinion. Giving our kids these phones, we’re giving them weapons, we’re giving them the world at their fingertips,” the grieving mother said.</p> <p>In the days after the young girl's death, it was revealed her parents had pleaded with her school to address “friendship issues” Charlotte was facing.</p> <p>Mr Howard told <em>60 Minutes</em> that despite her “ongoing struggles” the last two weeks of Charlotte’s life were “the best two weeks that I can remember with her”, adding, "We thought we were really turning the corner.”</p> <p>“You know she’d come home from school that day and she’d had a great day. Kelly had made her favourite dinner that night. And that night she skipped off to bed, literally skipped. And we never saw her again.”</p> <p>Her family revealed a “completely distressed” Charlotte spoke to a friend on her phone the night she died, and shared messages she had been sent online.</p> <p>“So we can’t say exactly what we’ve been told, but what I will tell you is what we’ve been told is some of the worst words that anybody should have to read, let alone a 12-year-old girl,” Mr Howard said.</p> <p>Recalling the heart-wrenching moment they found their daughter's body, Ms O'Brien said she pleaded for answers from police on how she would've taken her own life. </p> <p>“I just kept saying to the police that morning, ‘Where did she get the knowledge and the means? Where did she get the knowledge and the means?’,” she said. </p> <p>“I couldn’t wrap my head around it, and he (the police officer) just said to me, ‘This is the age of information. She just needed to Google it’. And for me, I’m so devastated by that because I gave her that phone.”</p> <p>Charlotte’s parents have travelled to Canberra to meet with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, ahead of legislation to raise the age of using social media from 13 to 16.</p> <p>“I intend to say, ‘Please, Mr. Albanese, raise the age of social media to 16, because 36</p> <p>months could change a lifetime’. That’s what I’m going to say,” Ms O’Brien said.</p> <p>Mr Howard said, “Charlotte was not the first and she’s already not the last. And this will continue to happen unless we make the right decisions.”</p> <p>The controversial bill to raise the age on social media platforms is set to go before Australia’s federal parliament this week, with support from both major parties.</p> <p><em><strong>Need to talk to someone? School apologises for removing memorial after girl's suicide

<p>Santa Sabina College has apologised after removing a makeshift memorial to honour the life of 12-year-old Charlotte O'Brien, who took her own life after years of alleged bullying at the school. </p> <p>The year 7 student died in September after being bullied at the Catholic school in the inner-west Sydney suburb of Strathfield.</p> <p>Following her tragic death, Charlotte's family created a memorial near the school, only for it to be removed days later, leaving her loved ones devastated.</p> <p>Principal Paulina Skerman initially defended the decision to remove the memorial, citing advice from mental health experts at Headspace, saying, "On the advice of mental health experts including Headspace, who are working with the College, we removed the memorial because of the concerns that were raised about the impact this could have on other young people."</p> <p>However, 2GB radio host Ben Fordham challenged her reasoning and reached out to Headspace, who said they gave no such advice to the school principal. </p> <p>"Headspace did not recommend Santa Sabina or Paulina Skerman remove the memorial dedicated to Charlotte. To say that they did is a straight-out lie," Fordham told his listeners.</p> <p>He added, "It never ever happened. Headspace did not advise Paulina Skerman or anyone at Santa Sabina to take it down."</p> <p>After Fordham's revelations, the school issued an apology on Monday, saying, "We are devastated for Charlotte's family and friends, and we acknowledge that some of the college's initial statements to the media were inadequate and hurtful."</p> <p>"We apologise to Charlotte's family for this. It was never our intention to add to their pain. We acknowledge that, at times, our efforts have fallen short, and we are sincerely sorry."</p> <p>"The choice to remove the public memorial was a difficult one, balancing the desire to honor Charlotte's memory with our responsibility to prevent further distress to students."</p> <p>"Ms Skerman was grateful to visit Charlotte's parents, Kelly and Matt, to apologise to them personally. Family heartbroken after school removes teen's memorial site

<p>Charlotte O'Brien, 12, sadly <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/lifestyle/family-pets/mother-s-heartbreaking-farewell-at-bullied-daughter-s-funeral" target="_blank" rel="noopener">took her own life</a> on September 9 after experiencing relentless bullying at Santa Sabina College in Strathfield, Sydney. </p> <p>Following the young schoolgirl's tragic death, her heartbroken family set up a memorial for her on a tree near the school. Her aunt Melinda Rodgers explained it was the only way they could bid farewell to the teen. </p> <p>“It was something we wanted to do for Charlotte because we didn’t get the opportunity to say goodbye,” she told <em>Nine News</em>.</p> <p>“It was our special way of giving her something to say you mattered and we miss you.”</p> <p>The memorial was set up over the weekend, with a small plaque put in place and flowers which began piling up as others started to pay tribute to the 12-year-old. </p> <p>On Monday afternoon, the memorial site had been removed. The family first realised this when they saw Charlotte's grandfather, who had previously left flowers at the site, “wandering aimlessly up and down the street … trying to find the memorial site to lay his flowers”</p> <p>“Words cannot express how devastated we were,” Rodgers said, after finding out the memorial site had been removed. </p> <p>Paulina Skerman the principal of the school, confirmed they had removed the memorial “because of concerns that were raised about the impact this could have on young people”. </p> <p>She explained that  the school was “with Charlotte’s family to find a permanent and loving way to remember Charlotte” and promised the 12-year-old would “not be forgotten”.</p> <p>Despite the school's explanation, Charlotte's father Mat, said he was “running out of words” to describe his feelings about the situation. </p> <p>“From the school’s perspective, If I was given advice to remove those things, I wouldn’t have touched them,” he said, adding it would be a "positive step" for the school to put up a permanent memorial to his daughter. </p> <p>Her parents had previously opened up about how disappointed they were in the school for reportedly showing "no empathy" during their <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/caring/parents-disappointed-by-principal-s-response-to-daughter-s-suicide" target="_blank" rel="noopener">20-minute meeting</a> with the principal, following Charlotte's death. </p> <p>“We arrived there and met with the principal. When I shared the feedback, she wasn’t interested in receiving that. The feedback was interrupted. It was discounted. Parents disappointed by Principal's response to daughter's suicide

<p>Charlotte O'Brien was only 12-years-old when she <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/lifestyle/family-pets/mother-s-heartbreaking-farewell-at-bullied-daughter-s-funeral" target="_blank" rel="noopener">took her own life </a>on September 9 after allegedly suffering years of bullying at Santa Sabina College in Strathfield, Sydney. </p> <p>A month later her grieving parents Mat and Kelly said they have met with the school's principal but were left disappointed after she reportedly showed "no empathy" during their 20-minute meeting.</p> <p>“That glimmer of hope that anything positive to come from that meeting was squashed the moment we arrived,” Mat told Ben Fordham on <em>2GB </em>on Tuesday. </p> <p>Mat explained how "incredibly hard" it was to walk through the school full of other young girl's their daughter's age. </p> <p>“We had to navigate ourselves across the school grounds, surrounded by other girls in their school uniform, knowing that we will never see our daughter again. That was incredibly hard for us,” he said.</p> <p>“We arrived there and met with the principal. When I shared the feedback, she wasn’t interested in receiving that. The feedback was interrupted. It was discounted. It was disagreed with.</p> <p>“I sat across the room from a lady (the principal) that showed myself and the rest of the family no emotion or empathy at all.”</p> <p>He claimed that the principal did not offer any kind of apology and said "there was no accountability at all". </p> <p>“The questions we wanted answered were simply not answered at all,” he said.</p> <p>“We were left to show ourselves out of the school ground.”</p> <p>“The last image that I will have of that school was as I looked behind me, Kelly was carrying some items of Charlotte’s and watching her squeeze herself and that box through those closed gates was one of the hardest things that I’ve seen.</p> <p>“Kelly got in the car and that was the worst I had seen her since the funeral. <p><em><strong>Warning: This article contains discussions about suicide that some readers may find distressing. </strong></em></p> <p>The grieving stepfather of 12-year-old Charlotte who died by suicide has spoken about the young girl's struggles with bullying as he prepares for her funeral. </p> <p>On Monday, Matthew remembered his stepdaughter as the “kindest, most caring little girl” whose death had followed “toxic” issues at school.</p> <p>“To lose a little girl at the age of 12 is something we won’t recover from,” he told <em>2GB’s</em> Ben Fordham.</p> <p>Charlotte was a student at Santa Sabina College in Sydney’s inner west, with the Catholic school being forced to defend their handling of bullying in the wake of the 12-year-old's death. </p> <p>Matthew said he believed some of the responses from the school had been “unnecessary”, and claimed he had no direct communication from officials despite their public statements. </p> <p>“I think outside of the response from the broader community of the school I have to say I’ve been disappointed to say the least, with the response that’s come from the school,” he said.</p> <p>“Some of the responses that have gone into the media, I think the first response was around that there’s inconsistencies in their records and I thought that comment to go out at that time when we were grieving was unnecessary."</p> <p>“And since then, comments like the school’s been overwhelmed with support from other parents coming forward and saying how well they deal with these types of issues. And I’m sure they’ve had some communication and some support, Ben."</p> <p>“But those mothers that have given that school support, no doubt they will be planning on picking their daughter up from school today, and we are not.”</p> <p>Matthew went on to confirm that Charlotte's mother had repeatedly asked her daughter's school to do something about the bullying, and break up the friendship that put Charlotte through a "roller coaster".</p> <p>“I would not allow this behaviour to happen in my home,” he said.</p> <p>“I am not after any retribution for these girls … but I’m looking for the schools to step in … to act when these things are raised for the first time, not the second or third time.”</p> <p>Matthew said it was time school “friendship issues” were called out for what they really were, saying, “It’s not called a friendship issue in the workplace.”</p> <p>The year 7 student took her own life on September 9th, leaving a note to her parents that included names of those she wanted at her funeral and others who had made “life too hard”.</p> <p>It also instructed her mother, Kelly, to “tell the school please”, with the note reading, “Mama, please share my story to raise awareness.”</p> <p>The family are preparing to farewell her at a funeral on Friday, and have asked those who wish to send flowers to instead make a donation to the <a href="https://inmemoryofcharlotte.raiselysite.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kids Helpline</a>.</p> <p><strong><em>Need to talk to someone? Wild conspiracy theory emerges over leaked horse cruelty video

Leaked footage shows Olympic star's horrific animal abuse

<p>The extent of dressage star Charlotte Dujardin's "error of judgement" has been revealed, just hours after she made the snap decision to withdraw from the Olympics just days before its commencement. </p> <p>The British dressage star, who is a three-time gold medallist and the joint most-decorated British female Olympian, withdrew and accepted a provisional six-month ban when coming clean about her acts of <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/travel/travel-trouble/no-excuse-olympic-legend-quits-days-before-paris-games-commence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">animal abuse</a> in the lead up to the Paris Games. </p> <p>Just hours after announcing her withdrawal from the equestrian events, a disturbing video of a training session began to circulate, in which she is alleged to have beaten a horse with a long whip 24 times in one minute.</p> <p>The video, first released by <em>Good Morning Britain</em>, was taken four years ago and allegedly showed the 39-year-old mistreating a horse when trying to get the animal to slowly trot during a lesson with a young student. </p> <p>With the trainee rider mounted on the horse, Dujardin can allegedly be seen whipping the horse’s legs repeatedly.</p> <p>The video has outraged many, with hundreds of people taking to social media to voice their shock and horror at the acts. </p> <p>Leading British social commentator David Kurten wrote on X, “The cruel abuse of this horse by Charlotte Dujardin is horrific and a stain on our nation."</p> <p>“Two urgent questions need answers: Did she whip horses regularly? Are dozens or hundreds of other dressage horses regularly whipped and abused by other trainers?”</p> <p>Former editor of Horse and Hound Lucy Higginson also added, “It has profoundly shocked everybody in the equestrian world.”</p> <p>The video was sent anonymously to the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI), who made the choice to suspend Dujardin just days before the Paris Olympics are set to begin. </p> <p>“The FEI has officially announced the provisional suspension of British Dressage athlete Charlotte Dujardin effective immediately from the date of notification, 23 July 2024,” it said in a statement.</p> <p>“This decision renders her ineligible to participate in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games or any other events under the jurisdiction of the FEI.”</p> <p>“According to the information received, the footage was allegedly taken several years ago during a training session conducted by Ms Dujardin at a private stable,” the organisation said.</p> <p>The governing body said Dujardin had confirmed she was depicted in the video and had acknowledged that her conduct was “inappropriate”.</p> <p>“Charlotte Dujardin requested to be provisionally suspended pending the outcome of the investigations and voluntarily withdrew from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and also confirmed that she will not participate in any competitions pending the outcome of the FEI’s investigation,” it said.</p> <p>“The FEI condemns any conduct contrary to the welfare of horses and has robust rules in place to address such behaviour.”</p> <p>When announcing her withdrawal from the Games, Dujardin said she made an "error of judgement", saying there was "no excuse" for her behaviour. </p> <p>She wrote in a statement on Instagram, “What happened was completely out of character and does not reflect how I train my horses or coach my pupils, however there is no excuse. "No excuse": Olympic legend quits days before Paris Games commence

<p>British dressage star Charlotte Dujardin has quit in disgrace just days before the Paris Olympics begins after disturbing footage emerged from a coaching session. </p> <p>The sporting legend, who is a three-time Olympic champion and joint most decorated British woman Olympian, has withdrawn from all competition while authorities investigate the incident of “an error of judgement”.</p> <p>The widely circulated video appears to show her hitting a horse on the legs during a slow-motion trot.</p> <p>“A video has emerged from four years ago which shows me making an error of judgement during a coaching session,” she said in a statement.</p> <p>“Understandably, the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) is investigating and I have made the decision to withdraw from all competition — including the Paris Olympics —while this process takes place."</p> <p>“What happened was completely out of character and does not reflect how I train my horses or coach my pupils, however there is no excuse. Richard Wilkins' heartbreaking interview regret

<p dir="ltr">Richard Wilkins has revealed the one heartbreaking question he wished he had asked Charlotte Dawson the day before her passing.</p> <p dir="ltr">In a recent interview for his series <em>Dickie's Diaries</em> the usually upbeat Nine Entertainment reporter sat in a moment of silence before he answered the interviewer’s question: What’s the one question you wished you’d asked?</p> <p dir="ltr">"The one question I wish I'd asked was to my friend," Wilkins began, repeating the question, pausing briefly before saying her name "Charlotte Dawson".</p> <p dir="ltr">"Charlotte used to come on the Today show a lot.</p> <p dir="ltr">"She always used to come into my dressing room at the old Channel Nine studios in Sydney. We'd always have a good old chat about stuff,” he said.</p> <p dir="ltr">He shared the conversation they had in February 2014 and the moment that has weighed on his mind since.</p> <p dir="ltr">"She said 'what are you doing on the weekend' and I said 'I'm going up to see Bruce Springsteen play in the Hunter Valley. It's going to be fantastic', I said. 'I can't wait to get up there',"</p> <p dir="ltr">"Charlotte took her life the next day which still makes my... shivers go up my spine... I had a spare ticket and I wish I'd said to her 'do you want to come?'</p> <p dir="ltr">"You just wonder whether, had she got out of the space she was in, taken a leap of faith, maybe things would have turned out differently."</p> <p dir="ltr">The New Zealand-Australian model and TV personality was found dead in her home in Woolloomooloo on February 22, 2014.</p> <p dir="ltr">Dawson had depression for over a decade and was only 47 when she passed. <p>Princess Charlotte of Wales celebrated her eighth birthday on May 2 2023.</p> <p>Kensington Palace has shared a new photo of the young royal to commemorate the special day, saying, “The Prince and Princess of Wales are delighted to share a new photograph of Princess Charlotte ahead of her eighth birthday.”</p> <p>Just like the images posted in 2022 to mark her seventh birthday, Princess Charlotte bears a striking resemblance to her father.</p> <p>The pair seem to share a number of similar facial features, including their eyes and nose, and expressions.</p> <p>The birthday photo, taken by her mother, the Princess of Wales, follows a long-standing tradition started by Catherine soon after her marriage to Prince William 12 years ago.</p> <p>The photo saw Princess Charlotte near the family’s home, Adelaide Cottage, in Windsor.</p> <p>She is shown sitting in a white wicker chair, with a beaming smile, wearing a white dress with floral embroidery.</p> <p>The new portrait comes shortly after the fifth birthday of Charlotte’s younger brother Prince Louis.</p> <p>However, breaking from tradition, the two photos shared by the palace on April 23 were taken by photographer Millie Pilkington rather than Kate.</p> <p>Instead, the Princess of Wales was captured in one of the images pushing her young son in a wheelbarrow.</p> <p>The Princess of Wales has been photographing her children for special occasions since soon after the birth of her first child, Prince George, and has chosen a more personal approach to royal family portraits.</p> <p>She’s been praised by professional photographers for her skills and ability to capture her children so organically.</p> <p>Princess Charlotte is said to join her parents Prince William and Kate, and brothers Prince George and Prince Louis at the coronation of King Charles on May 6.</p> <p>She is not believed to have an official role due to her age but she will take part in a procession with her two brothers from Westminster Abbey back to Buckingham Palace following the ceremony.</p> <p>They will ride in a carriage close behind the Gold State Coach carrying the King and Queen Consort Camilla.</p> <p>Prince George will <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/lifestyle/family-pets/palace-confirms-prince-george-s-role-at-coronation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">play a special role</a> during the ceremony, acting as one of the King’s four pages as the monarch enters the Abbey.</p> <p>They will be joined by the Princess Royal, her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra.</p> <p>Princess Anne, who is a former Olympic equestrian is set to ride horseback behind the Gold State Coach.</p> <p>This role is formally given the title of Gold-Stick-in-Waiting, a position that has historically been given to the person trusted with looking after the Monarch’s safety.</p> <p>Prince Andrew, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are not expected to participate.</p> <p>It was previously revealed that Prince Harry <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/lifestyle/family-pets/king-charles-coronation-harry-is-in-meghan-is-out" target="_blank" rel="noopener">will be in attendance</a> but Meghan will remain in Montecito, California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.</p> <p>However, Prince Harry's visit will likely be short-lived as he will return to California to celebrate Prince Archie's fourth birthday that same day.</p> <p><em>Image credit: Instagram</em></p>

King Charles III “saving” title for Princess Charlotte

<p dir="ltr">King Charles III is reportedly saving the title of Duchess of Edinburgh for his granddaughter Princess Charlotte.</p> <p dir="ltr">It was previously expected that when Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, died in 2021, the title would be given to Prince Edward. </p> <p dir="ltr">But Charles inherited the title and now its future is up in air with talks of him saving it for Princess Charlotte as she is third in line to the throne. </p> <p dir="ltr">"It would be a fitting way to remember the Queen – who, of course, had the title Duchess of Edinburgh – and a way for His Majesty to honour the line of succession,” a source told The Mail on Sunday. </p> <p dir="ltr">The Palace did not release any comment about the title. </p> <p dir="ltr">Princess Charlotte is the first female in the Royal Family to not be removed from her line of succession by her younger brother thanks to the Succession to the Crown Act (2013).</p> <p dir="ltr">The new law saw women born in the Royal Family after October 2011 holding their place of succession no matter if they had a younger male in the family. </p> <p dir="ltr">"It is not beyond the realms of possibility that she will accede the throne if, for example, Prince George does not have children," the source continued. </p> <p dir="ltr">The decision of who becomes the Duke or Duchess of Edinburgh was always going to be King Charles’ decision.</p> <p dir="ltr">It was also his parents’ wish that Prince Edward would become the next Duke of Edinburgh, but now only time will tell. </p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: Getty</em></p>

<p dir="ltr">Princess Charlotte broke down in tears at her great grandmother Queen Elizabeth’s funeral. </p> <p dir="ltr">The seven-year-old wiped away her tears as she was comforted by her mum the Princess of Wales as they bid farewell to the late monarch. </p> <p dir="ltr">The young royal was in attendance at the funeral with her older brother Prince George at Westminster Abbey, which was the same location where the Queen had her coronation in 1953 and her wedding in 1947.</p> <p dir="ltr">Princess Charlotte was also seen advising her brother to “bow” when the hearse drove past them. </p> <p dir="ltr">Prince George was also later comforted by his mother who patted his knee in reassurance. </p> <p dir="ltr">After the service, the Queen’s coffin left the Abbey to head off to Windsor where she will be privately buried at King George VI Memorial Chapel in St George's Chapel.</p> <p dir="ltr">Around 2000 people from around the world were invited to the historical event to farewell Queen Elizabeth II. </p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: Getty</em></p>

First day at new school for little Prince Louis

<p dir="ltr">Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have visited their new school as they gear up for the year ahead.</p> <p dir="ltr">Prince William and Kate Middleton, who moved the family to Windsor to have their kids at the same school, arrived hand-in-hand with their children at Lambrook School in Berkshire.</p> <p dir="ltr">The children were greeted by headmaster Jonathan Perry who asked them if they were excited for the new school year to which they all said “yes”.</p> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"> <p dir="ltr" lang="en">🎥 WATCH: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis arrived at Lambrook School with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge earlier today. Princess Charlotte’s show-stopping faces

<p dir="ltr">Princess Charlotte stole the show at the Commonwealth Games with her adorable animated facial expressions.</p> <p dir="ltr">The seven-year-old attended the games with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to watch the swimming at Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Birmingham on Tuesday. </p> <p dir="ltr">During the races, the Duchess was explaining things about the race, while Prince William watched on. </p> <p dir="ltr">As England’s Luke Turley prepared for the 1500m freestyle the Princess and her parents watched on in glee.</p> <p dir="ltr">Turley smashed a gruelling 30 lengths of the pool in 15:35.65 which qualified him for the final on Wednesday.</p> <p dir="ltr">Princess Charlotte smiled when the race came to the end before rolling her eyes about something her dad said. </p> <p dir="ltr">Several images captured the Princess’ cute facial expressions as she watched the races.</p> <p dir="ltr">Check them out below. </p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: Getty </em></p>

<p>Royal fans have gone wild over how much Princess Charlotte, 7, is beginning to look like her late grandmother Princess Diana.</p> <p>The young royal made a rare appearance on social media as she joined her father, Prince William, in a video message to share their well wishes to the England women's football team ahead of their Euro final game.</p> <p>After the post racked up almost one million likes in a matter of hours, royal fans flocked to the comments to note how Charlotte bares an uncanny resemblance to the late Princess of Wales.</p> <p>One person commented, "Charlotte is starting to look just like Princess Diana."</p> <p>Another wrote, "Princess Charlotte = Princess Diana's looks + Kate's idiosyncrasy."</p> <p>A third person said, "Awww Princess Charlotte is sooo cute! Her little voice! And wow, she looks like William, Catherine and Diana at the same time! It is a significant achievement for the entire team, including your support staff," Her Majesty said in a statement.</p> <p>"The Championships and your performance in them have rightly won praise. However, your success goes far beyond the trophy you have so deservedly earned."</p> <p>"You have all set an example that will be an inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations. The new royal title awaiting Princess Charlotte

<p>Princess Charlotte could receive a new title when her father, Prince William, becomes king. </p> <p>The Duke of Cambridge, 40, is currently second in line to the throne, meaning it is very likely he will become the reigning king during his lifetime. </p> <p>As a new monarch ascends the throne and the line of succession changes, some members of the royal family may receive a new title.</p> <p>As for 7-year-old Princess Charlotte, the young royal could be given the title of The Princess Royal, which is traditionally bestowed upon the eldest daughter of the sovereign.</p> <p>It would make Princess Charlotte the eighth Princess Royal in British royal history.</p> <p>The title is currently held by Anne, the Queen’s eldest daughter, who received it in 1987.</p> <p>According to stringent royal protocol, the title is held for life, even if the holder outlives the monarch, meaning only one person can hold the title at any one time. </p> <p>Under these rules, Princess Charlotte will only be eligible for the title if Princess Anne passes away and Prince William becomes king. </p> <p>As Princess Charlotte and her siblings George, 8, and Louis, 4, have gotten older, they have been taking part in more royal public engagements, most recently stealing the show at the Queen's platinum jubilee celebrations. </p> <p><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p>
