"I was going to die": Grant Denyer's brutal wake up call

Grant Denyer has spoken candidly about a brutal wake up call he received from a doctor, when he was told he would die if he didn't start looking after himself.

The TV host opened up on the Mental As Anyone podcast about how he would repeatedly push himself too far, and the moment he was forced to reevaluate his priorities.

“I was skinny as a rake and unhealthy as hell and the doctor said my organs were running at about seven per cent,” Denyer told the podcast.

“He goes, ‘if you don’t do something about this in the next four weeks, you’re going to die. It took two lessons for me to realise that I had to change my mindset and how I was approaching life and what I prioritised as important until I learned the lesson and I feel like if I hadn’t learned it the second time, it would have been fatal the third.”

The first lesson came to Denyer in the form of a brutal car crash, and the second being chronic fatigue telling him his body needed to stop.

“I broke my back, which I firmly now believe was not as a result of jumping seven cars in a monster truck but as a result of ignoring all my bodily signs, ignoring all the signals my body was trying to give me to slow the hell down,” he said.

“You can’t sustain this pace and this grind and this aggressive chase for the next rung of the ladder, because you will die. As my body was deteriorating and my mental health was deteriorating, the monster truck crash came along to sit me on my arse.”

Denyer also opened up about having to rely on prescription painkillers after his car accident, and how he struggled battling the pain and the effects of the medication.

“It messed with me instantly and majorly,” he said. “To give you an idea, the moment you close your eyes at night time, you fall into your worst nightmares every time instantly and you can’t differentiate between dream and reality so when you wake up, you firmly believed what you have just dreamt, indeed actually just did happen. It was horrible.”

"It is important to reflect on because it is the lows that make the highs and those euphoric moments feel high and that was one of the lows. I think in recognising (and) giving voice to those moments of low, that you can celebrate mediocre a lot more and enjoy that.”

I continued to face it."

“And today while I quietly smile about how far I’ve come, I wanted to share this quite personal post with you because I know that it will resonate with many people still trying to conceal and wear their masks.”

Chezzi’s followers were stunned by the raw honesty of the post, with many thanking her for helping them to feel less alone.

“Thank you for sharing so vulnerably,” one follower wrote.

“I just know being open about your experience will help others feel less alone and will hopefully help someone to take that first step to ask for help. Thank you. "I fell asleep in the fire escape": Grant Denyer's pain meds confession

Grant Denyer has opened up about the "horrific" time he was on strong pain medication, which at the peak of his reliance, led him to wander off in only his underwear and socks.

The former Sunrise presenter recalled the incident on the Jess Rowe Show Podcast and how it left his then-girlfriend Chezzi, with "PTSD" after she spent four hours looking for him in the Sydney CBD.

The pair were staying at a hotel in Sydney’s Chinatown when the incident occurred.

“I wanted some scotch one night, for whatever reason, and just went wandering around town in my undies, got lost in the fire escape on the way back to the apartment,” he said in the podcast.

“I did not know where my apartment was and fell asleep in the fire escape.

“It took Chez three or four hours to find me.”

In another part of the interview he opened up on the effects of the medication.

“When you are under the influence of that kind of power of medication and in that much pain, when you close your eyes at night you go into your worst nightmares immediately and it is every night,” he explained.

“So I would come down and think there was a home invasion, I would be crawling down with a broken back to fight off people I thought were there attacking and raping Chez.

“This would happen daily.”

He added that the pain meds left him in such a daze that whenever he woke up couldn't "differentiate what was real and what wasn’t.”

At the time, Denyer had a reliance on both endone and morphine following a monster truck accident in 2008 which left him with a severe spinal injury.

The former Sunrise presenter was training for the Monster Truck Championships at Dapto Showground when the accident occurred, and had only been dating Chezzi for "a couple of weeks", which forced her "straight into carer nurse mode”.

Denyer also opened up about the incident on the couple's podcast It’s All True?

“As soon as you close your eyes you go into your worst nightmares. The things that you are afraid of the most are the first things that happen the moment you fall asleep and you start dreaming.

“It is traumatic as every time you sleep and then when you wake up you can’t tell what is real and what isn’t," he said in 2020.

Chezzi also explained her side of the story and said that when she found him in the fire exit, he was covered in filth.

“It was pretty gross and it broke my heart,” she said.

Despite the challenges, the couple's love has prevailed as the pair have been married since 2009 and share three daughters, Sunday, Sailor and Scout.

Images: Instagram

"We did it. We survived": Chezzi Denyer's emotional revelation about baby girl

Chezzi Denyer is celebrating a "huge leap" made by her youngest daughter Sunday.

Sunday, 2, was diagnosed with hip dysplasia when she was a baby and had to wear a hip brace for nine months.

Hip dysplasia occurs when a hip joint doesn't develop properly, and if left untreated can damage the joint over time which causes hip pain and arthritis.

Now, almost a year after getting her hip brace, Sunday is running around "unstoppable," and her proud mum took to Instagram to share the highs and lows of the past year.

She began the post by encouraging parents who are experiencing a similar diagnosis to "hang in there."

"The nights are long and the days even longer when you’re got a baby in a brace or a spica cast," she continued.

"It’s absolute torment seeing your baby in pain or uncomfortable. You think you won’t be able to cope.

"The lack of sleep. The constant discomfort. The lump in your throat when you encourage your baby to go in for another procedure. Another general anaesthetic. The fear you feel in the pit of your stomach. Trying to keep your eyes on the end goal.

"You need to be strong for them.

"The heat of the cast. The pressure points. The dry sore skin you massage and moisturise where you can. And the mess. The spica cast mess and the smell…" she wrote.

She then listed all of the medical appointments, procedures and tests they had to go through for the past year and how challenging it was having to adjust.

“Adapting and changing your entire life for an indefinite period can be paralysing - New prams, specially created car seats, cots, mattresses, high-chairs, specially made clothes, nappies, accessories, activities.

“Having to stop work, take leave, giving up daycare with little hope of getting your days back down the track, not being able to travel easily, having to sacrifice activities with older kids, nursing your toddler for hours unable to do much else, trying to keep them occupied when they can’t move and they’re bored… all of these might seem trivial to someone on the outside...

“But when you’re in it, every single thing you know or you’ve learnt or even want to do must change to accommodate your hippy baby, and that too can be terrifying," she added.

She also shared how "hard and tiring and stressful and scary" it was to take care of not only your baby, but yourself, and encouraged other parents to feel and express these emotions when they can.

The wife of former Sunrise weather presenter Grant Denyer also expressed her gratitude towards all the mums that have helped her throughout this journey.

“I remember so many experienced parents telling me that their child once was in a cast or a brace and how they remember the time well.

“Many of those kind-hearted parents telling me their child now runs or dances etc and you wouldn’t even know… and when I was deep in it, it felt like that was a lifetime away.

“But here we are, one year on from getting the rhino brace on, and little Sunday is running around unstoppable.”

Although Sunday is "not out of the woods" yet as she will need an operation or two when she is around four years old, the mum of three couldn't help but express how proud she was.

“I am celebrating this milestone with so much pride. I’m so proud of her. She’s incredibly resilient.. but I’m also proud of me. We did it. We survived.

“We have come out the other side and we are stronger for it. And I hope that can help some other parents either going through this or about to. Xxx,” her post ended.

Images: Instagram

Grant and Chezzi Denyer head up all-star cast in new show

The celebrity cast for Channel 10’s 2023 The Amazing Race Australia season has been revealed, with 11 teams set to take off on a thrilling journey across the globe.

Beau Ryan will return as host, overseeing the contestants as they race for victory, and a $100,000 prize to hand to their chosen charity, in a race described as “heading in a new direction”, with twists and turns at every stop along the way.

The 11 duos set to compete are bringing a wide range of skill sets to the race, with stars from sports to entertainment, comedy, and music strapping on their running shoes.

Grant Denyer and his wife, Chezzi Denyer, are one of those 11 teams, with the pair joking that the whole competition will be more like a holiday from their kids than anything else - though Chezzi added that she’s also looking forward to their daughters seeing her “kick butt” on screen. As for their charity, they’ve selected Lifeline Central West.

Emma Watkins and her sister, Hayley Watkins, are excited to spend some time together over the course of their adventure, as well as “meeting the people that we get to see and the different countries” - especially for Hayley, who hasn’t had the opportunity to do a lot of travel. They’ll be racing to raise money for the Leonie Jackson Memorial Fund.

Peter Rowsthorn will be racing alongside his daughter, Frankie Rowsthorn, hoping that their humour will win over allies, while promising a barrel of laughs along the way. They’ll be racing for a cause close to their hearts, All Stars for Autism, as Peter explained “my grandson has autism, so we’re doing it for him.”

Jana Pittman will be keeping it in the family too, racing with her son Cornelis Rawlinson. The former Olympian is excited to have quality time with Cornelis - the eldest of her six children - and feels honoured to have been asked to participate. Meanwhile, he has other priorities, with his sights firmly set on “the food”. They’ll be competing on behalf of The Royal Hospital for Women.

Darren McMullen and his nephew, Tristan Dougan, will be joining the others, and promise a foolproof plan to get them through - even if they aren’t quite able to agree on who’s the brains behind the entire operation. They’ve selected Feel the Magic as their charity, noting that the children involved are “an inspiration for all of us.”

Dane Simpson will be joined by his dad, Bow Simpson, as Dane looks to showcase the man who pops up so often throughout his comedy routines, certain that Australians everywhere are going to fall in love with him. They’ll be racing to win the $100,000 for the Dharriwaa Elders Group Incorporated.

Alli Simpson and her mum, Angie Simpson, are another team racing to raise funds for a cause that means a lot to their family - Dementia Australia. As Alli explained, “my grandma, my dad's mum Chrissie, has gone down really fast with dementia in the last few years. It's been really difficult for us to watch. We just want to do as much as we can to prevent other families [from] feeling the pain that we do."

Bec Judd will have her sister, Kate Twigley, at her side for the journey, bringing their competitive spirit and excitement to do it “together as sisters” to the competition. They’ll be racing on behalf of Impatient Advocacy - A Nicole Cooper Foundation.

George Mladenov is no stranger to the world of reality TV competition - though his sister, Pamela Mladenov, may be a fresh face. George is sure they’ll bring drama to the screen, as they race for the Bankstown Women's Health Centre.

Ben Gillies and his wife, Jackie Gillies, are hoping that the race experience will bring them closer, and teach them how to “live in the moment”. Self-confessed competitive souls, they have their sights set on the grand prize, which they hope to bring home to the Moira Kelly Creating Hope Foundation.

And last but not least, Harry Jowsey is bringing his best friend, Teddy Briggs, along for the ride. And while they don’t expect to be “the best at this”, they’ve guaranteed that viewers are in for a fun time with their antics, and hope to bring some money to Beyond Blue with their efforts.

Images: Ten

We send you hugs and love.

“And to all those who have recently lost someone they love, or a pet they adored… sending you love too.”

Chezzi’s sad update comes weeks after she revealed she had made a “life-changing” move.

She said she was taking lessons from a spiritual medium as a way to trust herself more and further develop her intuition.

She said she had begun studying through the night once a week with a coach.

A spiritual medium claims to be able to communicate with the spirits of the dead and living beings.

Chezzi shared videos of herself during an international Zoom session and explained that she had been waking up at 2:30am for nearly 10 weeks to study with The Medium School.

“The commitment seems large, especially when you’re tired and would prefer to sleep,” she shared in an Instagram story.

“But the reward is that this course has been life-changing for me.

“I am nowhere close to being able to do this as a profession... and I didn’t enter this course wanting to become a medium.

“I chose this course as a way to trust myself more, to develop ways to enhance my intuition.

“To learn ways of being able to slow down and take note of the multitude of signs and symbols put in my path each day designed to give great hope.”

Chezzi wrote that what she has taken from the course is “so much more” than just trusting herself and enhancing her intuition.

She explained her lessons were to “put myself first sometimes” and that humans are “highly intuitive”, something that people can often lose touch with.

“I’ve learnt that I believe in the world being a good-hearted place despite the constant news of suffering and loss,” she went on.

“I’ve learnt that the people and animals I adored in this life, are with me energetically and cheering me on.

“And the most profound thing of all, is that I have learnt to trust myself.

“To trust and speak up when something doesn’t feel right. To have confidence in myself. To set clear boundaries.

“To speak my intentions out loud.. and to always act for the highest possible good.”

She ended her post by thanking her teacher Rory who “opened up this beautiful path”.

“I am very grateful for your guidance and help.”

"That one really hurt": Grant Denyer on career axing that brought him to tears

Grant Denyer has opened up about the two most brutal axings of his career: one a breakfast radio show that left him in tears, and the other, his dream TV show that never aired.

Speaking to news.com.au’s podcast, I’ve Got News For You, Denyer revealed that one of the most brutal moments of his career was when he was axed from the 2Day FM breakfast show.

In 2018 Denyer was a co-host of the show in Sydney alongside Em Rusciano and Ed Kavalee. Rusciano left the show late 2018 and was replaced by Ash London- but the program failed to get good ratings so the trio were axed in August 2019.

“That one really hurt,” Denyer said.

“Because I’d had lunch with a head executive a week earlier who promised me that they were going to sign me for another five years, and then a week later I finish a show and then at 9.05am I walk into a meeting and they say, ‘well, that was your last show.’

“I burst into tears,” he added.

“I was a blubbering mess. I cried in the corner for quite a while.

“That one hurt because you give so much of yourself in breakfast radio … and you share a lot of deep, personal stories, some that are humiliating and embarrassing … because there’s such a need to deliver content every day to connect with an audience,” he said.

The Gold Logie winner added that because he had shared so much of his life on the radio show, and it still wasn’t enough, the impact “shocked and rocked” him for a couple of years.

“I took a lot of getting over that.

“In fact, I went from having probably the most confidence I’d ever had in my entire career to having the least amount of confidence that I’ve ever had, and it’s taken a bit of a steady road to come back,” he added.

The other most brutal moment in his TV career was when a new version of Hey Hey It’s Saturday called Saturday Night’s Alright was cancelled before it even aired.

The show was intended for Channel 7 and they had apparently spent a million producing the pilot.

“We’d spent a million bucks on a pilot, it was incredible, it was a game changer, it was going to blow everyone’s mind”, Denyer said.

Unfortunately, the show was axed when they heard that Channel 9 was going to bring back Hey Hey.

“They (Channel 7) were like, ‘let’s let Channel 9 and Daryl (Somers) go first and then if it works, we’ll run ours,’” Denyer said.

“After two or three episodes, unfortunately Daryl’s show started to fizzle and then that killed our big, giant variety show, which is the show I’ve always wanted since I was a kid.

“It was axed before it even went to air!” he revealed.

Image: Getty Images

"So proud": Grant Denyer announces huge news

Former Sunrise presenter Grant Denyer has announced a happy update about his daughter Sunday’s health condition.

Sunday was diagnosed with hip dysplasia in 2022 and has been in a full body cast for the past eight months.

That didn’t stop little Sunday from developing and she has even recently started to run for the first time.

“She’s running! This is huge!” her excited dad wrote on Instagram on Sunday, posting footage of Sunday speeding around at home.

“So proud of our gorgeous little Sunday.

“She has not let her hip dysplasia hold her back.

“It’s been 8 months of a full body plaster cast and now this one, finally she’s figuring out a way to get the mobility she’s always dreamed of.

“What every kid needs and deserves.

“She’s so far behind in some milestones compared to others because of her dislocated hip but then again, she’s blossoming like you wouldn’t believe in so many other ways.

“And she’s never complained or gotten frustrated with it. Her spirit is simply extraordinary.

“Always smiling, always playing and always captivating us all with her gorgeous attitude to life.

“She is a true delight to be around and watch grow.

“We love you so much Sunday ... you make us proud every day.”

In the video, Denyer can be heard encouraging Sunday as she runs along.

Fans of Denyer loved the sweet update, flocking to the comments on Denyer’s Instagram post sharing their support.

“Look at her go!” wrote radio personality Brendan Jones.

“Love the arms. It’s all how you dance,” said another, referring to Sunday’s propellor-like arm movements.

“That’s incredible, a mini Aussie icon in the making and an inspiration for sure,” wrote a third.

Added another: “She is so beautiful, you must be very proud of her, such an amazing little girl.”

Denyer and his wife Chezzi have shared Sunday’s health journey from the moment she was put into the body cast until now.

Many others shared their stories of their own children with hip dysplasia.

“Ours didn’t walk til out of the brace but she’s a pocket rocket now!

“Still a bit behind with motor skills but her speech and language is amazing for a 3.5 yr old!

“You have both have done an amazing job supporting Sunday to be her best!”

“Our daughter had one and now she’s 11 and unstoppable,” said another.

“Lovely to see.”

Hip dysplasia occurs when the hip socket does not fully cover the ball portion of the upper thigh bone, causing the hip joint to be partially or completely dislocated.

If hip dysplasia is diagnosed in early infancy, a soft brace can often correct the problem.

One person with hip dysplasia as a child said they remembered the swinging arm movements Sunday deals with.

“I learnt to walk like this in my brace too, after 3 surgeries,” they wrote.

“My little gal and boy both had plaster and braces too and you should see them now, they don’t stop for nobody!

“She’s doing amazing.”

“Fun until it wasn’t”: Grant Denyer takes smiling selfie moments before disaster

Former Sunrise presenter Grant Denyer has taken to Instagram to report that he was involved in a disastrous biking accident.

Grant, who has been training ahead of the 2023 Bathurst 12 Hour race this weekend, was with friend and training partner Mick when they ran into trouble.

Despite dubbing the incident a “huge stack”, it seems no real injury was sustained, with Denyer’s sharing a light hearted take with his 408k followers.

“No joke, 2 mins after this photo we had a huge stack doing wheelies and clipping handlebars,” he captioned the image. The photo in question features Grant and Mick on their bikes, cycling along a country road, with big smiles on each of their faces.

“D*ckheads,” Grant said of the pair, and added that they were “putting in the big yards for the @bathurst12hr this weekend. Doing a lot of riding. New to it. As our crash proves … Thx Mick from @bathurstaquapark for being a great training partner. Most of the time”.

Grant’s post was met with great amusement from his followers, with most making fun of the situation along with him. It didn’t seem to phase Grant, who met their comments with lighthearted jokes of his own.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Grant Denyer (@grantdenyer)

“Two hands for beginners, legend,” wrote one.

“Yeah um…. These little legs work HARD”.

Mick, Grant’s riding partner, came up in a few of the comments, and Grant made sure to praise his skill while still poking some fun at the whole situation.

“He’s a wildcat that’s for sure! A beast on the bike.” He said of his training partner, “bloody talented at everything. Except keeping to himself”.

Grant, who has quite the history with motorsports under his belt, will still be participating in the Bathurst 12 hour, an international endurance race that will span Friday through to Sunday.

Images: Instagram

Grant Denyer has shared a video to instagram of his incredibly brave wife – Chezzi – defending the family home (and her own pet dog) from an advancing brown snake that had been lurking in the garden.

As the slithering brown snake made its way towards the house, Grant remained sheltered inside along with their daughters Sunday, Scout and Sailor, while Chezzi stood firm and attempted to shoo the invader away with a pair of barbecue tongs and a broom.

After posting the video of the scary encounter, Grant wrote “Go Chez!" before going on to reveal why it was Chezzi who was taking on the snake rather than himself:

“When Mr Brown comes to visit, trust the chick who had snakes as a kid to take care of it.

“Mumma bear protecting the dog and family while TV Dad filmed it all from safely behind double glazed glass.

“Didn’t think I ever saw Steve Irwin use BBQ tongs tho. It’s coming for the stairs.”

As the snake gets closer to the back stairs, Grant yells again: “CHEZ?”, sounding truly worried.

The camera then pans to Chezzi trying to shoo the snake away.

“That’s the washerwoman Chez,” Grant can be heard saying in the background.

One of the girls then shouts out, “I love you Mum!” and Grant adds, “Don’t die!”

“Aw, this is really scary,” Sailor can be heard saying.

“Mummy’s very brave.”

After the encounter was over and the video had been posted, Chezzi herself took to the comments section, writing: “Just a Mum trying to cook dinner on time when the kids spot a big snake coming for the dog.”

“Safely relocated the big brown to the bottom side of the paddock away from the kids ... and finished dinner on time.”

Adding eye-roll emojis, she said: “And the eye rolls were for Grant and his helpful commentary from inside.”

Of course Grant and Chezzi's Instagram followers did not remain neutral when it came to assessing who was the hero in the incident.

The Morning Show co-host Larry Emdur even chimed in, joking: “Bro, firstly I love it how you scream for Chezzi (what a brave husband and protective father you are ). secondly grab a snake survival kit from my mates at @survivalfirstaid immediately."

“Mum is so brave…I love you mum!” added TV personality Lisa Wilkinson, while podcaster Abbie Chatfield simply wrote: “Hell yeah!”

“Chezzi Denyer you are a legend,” one fan wrote.

“The girls’ commentary is the best!” noted another.

“Not all heroes wear capes, some hold barbecue tongs,” observed a third.

Images: Instagram

"This is serious": Grant Denyer's health warning

Grant Denyer has shared a doctor's serious warning about his health, after years of pushing himself "to the limit".

Speaking candidly on the Along For The Ride podcast, Denyer talked about his lifelong love for high-speed car racing while continuing his job as a TV host.

After years appearing on shows such as Sunrise, Family Feud, Australia’s Got Talent, and Dancing With The Stars, Denyer admitted his TV success meant he “could do whatever I wanted from wherever I wanted.”

“(On Sunrise), if I wanted to stand at Uluru tomorrow, I could,” he said, describing those years as “the greatest time of my life.”

“If I wanted to wrestle a crocodile in the Top End the day after, I did. It was limitless. In three and a half years I had something like 750 flights."

“You were in a different part of the country every single day."

“I was addicted to the success of the ratings, and we were really pushing the envelope, and (eventually) I ran into an absolute heap.”

During those years, Denyer was living a whirlwind life, as he was working in the fast-paced world of television during the week, and also racing cars at the weekend, so eventually his body began to shut down.

“I wasn’t listening to my body; I had massive chronic fatigue,” Denyer said.

“The hard part is that when you’re operating out of adrenaline every day, which live broadcasting gives you, let alone all the stunts you’re doing, you’re depleting everything."

“There was a point there where I went to the doctor and they examined my organs and tested them all and said they were running at about seven per cent."

“And they said, ‘if you don’t do something, drastically, you’re going to die, and soon.’"

“That’s when I was like, holy s***, this is serious, I need to do something about this."

“I was trying to push on and I realised I just had to give in to it - forget about television, forget about success, forget about ratings - and just focus on my health, because it wasn’t going to end well.”

After the brutal wake up call, Denyer scaled back on his commitments and slowed down, focusing on being a family man, while still pursuing his love of car racing occasionally.

He said, “If I just sat on the couch and did nothing, is that living a life?”
