"Laughably bad": New sculpture of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip divides opinion

A newly unveiled bronze sculpture of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip has received somewhat mixed reviews from the public, with many criticising the piece for looking "nothing like" them.

The artwork was unveiled at Antrim Castle Gardens in Northern Ireland on Friday, and was commissioned by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, which said the piece “captures Her Majesty in a dignified pose, reflecting her grace, steadfastness and lifelong dedication to public service”.

It also depicts two of her famous corgis at her feet and her husband, Philip standing behind her with his hands behind his back.

While the local council told CNN that the bronze statue of the Queen "has been warmly received by most who have seen it in person," many have ridiculed the statue for looking nothing like them.

One user wrote on X that it was "laughably bad", adding: "It doesn't even look an iota like her, does it? Am I blind, or is that just nothing like the Queen? Surely they pay a fortune for these commissioned pieces - is there no requirement that there actually be a likeness?"

It doesn't even look an iota like her, does it? Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown," she continued.

“The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you.

“With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything.

“This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Shoppers outraged over Coles bin full of discarded groceries

A shocking photo of a bin filled with discarded groceries at the back of a Coles supermarket has gone viral, outraging many shoppers.

The photo, taken behind the Drouin store in West Gippsland, Victoria, shows a skip bin measuring over a metre high overflowing with tens of thousands of dollars worth of food, including meat, ice cream, pasta, pizzas, dips, cheeses, juice and smoked salmon.

According to 7News, the products were thrown out after the region was hit with a storm that caused a power outage, and as the store did not have a backup generator, the refrigerated food was spoiled and needed to be thrown out.

Coles has explained that items had to be discarded to ensure customer safety, but many shoppers were left shocked and infuriated about the waste, arguing the store should have been ready for the storms with backup generators.

“For the 2023/24 financial year, Coles Australia reported a net profit of $1.1 billion and can’t afford back up generators, go figure,” one wrote.

Others insisted some of the food could have been saved or donated, as one person said, “Butter that stays on the bench for two weeks (is) fine!” while another insisted, “at least donate it”.

A supermarket worker commiserated with the upset shoppers, as they wrote online, “As someone who works for one of the supermarket chains, I have had to partake in this due to a prolonged power outage earlier this year.”

“I feel for these staff, there’s nothing worse than having to throw out so much refrigerated stock. Coming from a family who didn’t have much, I get the pain people feel from this incident.”

However, one social media user noted that regarding donations, “legally they cannot, if they give someone food poisoning and kill them they are liable”.

A Coles spokesperson told news.com.au that food safety is a top priority, saying in a statement, “Due to the extreme weather that hit much of Victoria early last week, there were widespread power outages, including in the Drouin and surrounding areas.”

“Food safety is paramount at Coles and unfortunately as a result of products being un-refrigerated for an extended period of time, for safety and quality reasons, we needed to dispose of a number of products to ensure customer safety.

“Where possible, Coles always donates product that is fit for use and safe for consumption to food rescue organisations.”

And I would never want someone else to not be believed."

"So, if me voicing what I have overcome will save someone, or encourage someone in their life to really genuinely check in on them and not assume that the appearance is good, so everything's OK, then that's worth it.

"I'll take a hit for that."

In a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan revealed that she had suicidal ideation while pregnant with son Archie due to the pressure of life as a royal and the way the British media treated her.

“I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” she said at the time.

She also recalled reaching out to palace officials and said that she did not receive any mental health help.

The initiative, launched with the couple’s Archewell Foundation, aims to make sure that no other families go through what they did.

“Our kids are young; they’re 3 and 5. They’re amazing,” she told Pauley.

“But all you want to do as parents is protect them. And so, as we can see what’s happening in the online space, we know that there’s a lot of work to be done there, and we’re just happy to be able to be a part of change for good.”

Images: CBS Sunday Morning

Prince Harry finally speaks out on "rift" with royal family

Prince Harry has finally opened up on his "rift" with the royal family for the first time, in an interview for the ITV documentary, Tabloids on Trial.

The Duke of Sussex revealed that his decision to launch multiple legal battles against a string of tabloid newspapers was central to his rift with the royal family.

He said that his determination to fight the publications ruined his relationship with them.

“That’s certainly a central piece to it,” he said.

“But, you know, that’s a hard question to answer because anything I say about my family results in a torrent of abuse from the press.

“I’ve made it very clear that this is something that needs to be done. It would be nice if we, you know, did it as a family," he continued.

“I believe that, again, from a service standpoint and when you are in a public role, that these are the things that we should be doing for the greater good.

“But, you know, I’m doing this for my reasons. I think everything that’s played out has shown people what the truth of the matter is.

“For me, the mission continues, but it has, it has, yes. It’s caused, yeah, as you say, part of a rift.”

In December, London's High court ruled that he had been the victim of phone-hacking and other unlawful acts by journalists, with the knowledge of their editors at Mirror Group Newspapers.

Harry said that the publications under MGN had targeted him for 15 years.

He was awarded £140,600 ($267,400), and called the judge's ruling in his favour a "monumental victory".

Image: ITV

Prince William’s huge salary revealed

Buckingham Palace has released its annual report, known as the Sovereign Grant Report, into the royal family's finances, revealing Prince William's whopping annual salary.

The Palace said the findings of the report "reflects a time of unforeseen challenges for the royal family", referencing the cancer diagnosis that struck both King Charles and Princess Kate this year, as the senior royals stepped back from official duties to undergo treatment.

Despite the "challenging" year for the royals, Prince William earned a whopping salary of $45 million AUD in the last financial year.

After inheriting the title of Prince of Wales, Prince William, receives the majority of his personal wealth from the Duchy of Cornwall, which he inherited from his father after the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

That extensive estate is worth more than £1 billion (approximately $1.8b AUD) and includes 52,450 hectares of land, mostly in the south-west of England.

Prince William has made a major change since inheriting the title, choosing not to reveal how much tax he pays on the private income from the duchy.

The royal family is also set for a huge pay rise next year, as profits from the monarch's Crown Estates has risen by 53 per cent in the past financial year.

That means the monarchy is to receive a boost of more than £45 million (approximately $87m AUD).

Across 2023-24, profits for the royal family rose to £1.1 billion mainly due to offshore wind farms, meaning the Sovereign Grant (the annual payment the royals get from the government each year) will increase from £86.3 million (approximately $167m AUD) in 2024-25 to £132 million (approximately $257m AUD) in 2025-26.

The majority of the royal family's wealth comes from the Crown Estate, roughly about £16 billion (approximately $31b AUD ) of an estimated £20 billion (approximately $40b AUD).

Image credits: Isabel Infantes/WPA Pool/Shutterstock Editorial

"This is crazy": MasterChef Australia 2024 winner crowned

MasterChef Australia has crowned its 2024 winner!

Nat Thaipun has emerged as the winner of the coveted title and took home a whopping $250,000.

In the intense finale, the final two contestants Josh Perry and Nat Thaipun had 75 minutes to cook up something spectacular for the judges using black peppercorns as the key ingredient.

While Perry went with a rib-eye with some brussels sprouts and peppercorn sauce, with a spin on the vegees and some pureed sauce, Thaipun went with a Thai twist on a hearty pub meal, the scotch egg.

In the first round, Thapun managed to secure a total of 36/40, while Perry walked away from round one with 33/40.

In the second round, the contestants were asked to recreate renowned British chef Claire Smith's "Core-teaser", an incredibly detailed version of the classic Malteaser, with 113 steps to follow.

Both contestants struggled with the dessert, but Perry ended up struggling the most with one of the dish's key elements which resulted in his malt sugar ball going "pear-shaped".

Perry "absolutely nailed it" despite missing an element of the dessert, and Thaipun was "pretty bang on" with the flavours of the dish, but the judges thought her texture was off.

Despite this, it was the extra points in the first round that gave Thaipun the advantage of winning the show.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; New York City mocked for only just discovering wheelie bins

New York City has been trolled online after discovering wheelie bins for the first time.

In order to tackle the "trash revolution", the mayor of NYC Eric Adams announced that wheelie bins will be introduced city wide, instead of the current system which is just leaving rubbish bags on the street.

Despite the introduction of wheelie bins being a great solution for the city's trash and rodent problem, many were shocked to learn that the receptacles don't already exist there.

Introducing the roll out, Mayor Adams began his press conference rolling in a bin and proudly demonstrating how to use it before celebrating with colleagues.

He said “many people thought it was impossible” that these wheelie bins were going to be part of the city’s “trash revolution”.

“We all have one unified dislike, and those are those pesky New York City rats,” Mr Adams said.

“They’re getting more and more bold. They no longer run from you. They just hang out and just do what they want. We want to make sure we change that in a real way.”

NYC department of sanitation commissioner Jessica Tisch described the official NYC bin as a “beautiful, rat-fighting piece of engineering” to conquer the estimated three million rats that dominate the streets.

The wheelie bin announcement, which was intended to impress New Yorkers, has also gone global – with Europeans and Australians baffled by concept of wheelie bins being new.

“Oh my word! Are they seriously showing their constituents how to use a trash can?” wrote one person.

“Huh, they don’t have wheelie bins? What century do they live in?” said a second.

“How the hell is this revolutionary??” agreed another.

“So they finally figured out putting your trash in piles on the sidewalk is not a good idea,” mocked someone else.

“Grief eats you away”: Prince Harry's candid interview about losing his mother

Prince Harry has spoken candidly about his ongoing struggles with grief following the death of his mother, the late Princess Diana, when he was just 12 years old.

Upon his brief return to the UK, the Duke of Sussex opened up in a new interview as part of his role as global ambassador for Armed Forces charity Scotty’s Little Soldiers, who work to support children who have lost parents in the military, admitting that “grief eats you away”.

Harry detailed how difficult it was losing his mother at such a young age, admitting he spent nearly two decades “not thinking” about her death and was forced to eventually get help after years of “total chaos”.

He added that learning how to celebrate a late loved one is difficult for a child, as it made them “sad”.

“But realising if I do talk about it, and I’m celebrating their life, then things become easier,” he said.

Harry went on, “You convince yourself that the person you’ve lost wants you, or you need to be sad for as long as possible to prove to them that they are missed … Especially when every defence mechanism in your mind, nervous system and everything else is saying ‘do not go there.”

"But then there’s this realisation of, no, they must want me to be happy”.

The 39-year-old royal shared how, after decades of silent mourning, he learned suppressing grief was “in fact not” the best form of coping with loss.

“It can be for a period of time,” he went on to say.

“But…if you suppress this for too long, you can’t suppress it forever it’s not sustainable and it will east away at you inside."

“Once realising that if I do talk about it and I’m celebrating their life then actually things become easier.”

Prince William gives emotional update on Princess Catherine

Prince William has shared an update on Princess Kate's condition, as she continues to undergo cancer treatment away from the public eye.

The Prince of Wales was accompanied by King Charles and Queen Camilla at an event honouring the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when William was asked about Kate's condition.

One conversation, which was filmed by a bystander, shows William talking to World War II veteran Geoffrey Weaving who asked how the Princess was recovering.

“I was going to ask you if your wife was getting any better?” asked Weaving, who was in a wheelchair.

Bending down to be at his eye level, William remarked: “Yes... she would have loved to have been here today.”

“I was reminding everybody, her grandmother served at Bletchley so she would have had quite a bit in common with a few of the other ladies here who served at Bletchley but never spoke about it until the very end,” he added.

Questions still surround the timing of Kate’s return to the public eye after official confirmation that she will miss an important military ceremony this month.

The princess has not been seen in public since she revealed she had cancer, in a video in March this year, and was undergoing preventive chemotherapy.

As the royal family continues to grapple with Kate's absence following her diagnosis, Sarah Ferguson has reflected on how the difficult news impacted the family.

Speaking candidly on Good Morning Britain, The Duchess spoke emotionally about how "brave" the Princess of Wales was.

"Lovely Princess Catherine doing the video was so brave," Sarah, 64, told the morning show hosts.

"I think family unity is an extraordinary thing and I'm honestly just so proud and I just send them lots of love and lots of support."

Image credits: Various/POOL supplied by Splash News/Splashnews/Shutterstock Editorial
