What you should know before you start chasing bargains at the EOFY sales

Park Thaichon, University of Southern Queensland

What cost-of-living crisis? Millions of Australians are expected to spend A$10.1 billion during the end of financial year (EOFY) sales.

Many products, from cars and holiday packages to clothing and white goods will be available at marked down prices over the next few weeks.

Clothing and accessories will attract the biggest spend, followed by electronics and technology, household items and decorations and then appliances and white goods.

To put the estimated $10.1 billion EOFY spend in perspective, in 2023 Australians spent $361 billion on retail goods, with $63.6 billion of that spent online.

With such high spending, consumers need to make informed decisions to maximise their savings and avoid pitfalls.

Buyer beware

It is important to understand the return and exchange policies of the different retail stores.

Most retailers allow shoppers who change their mind up to 30 days to return and receive a refund or exchange the product. Some may have shorter return periods or may not accept returns on sale items.

These items are sometimes referred to as final sales, non-refundable purchases, last-chance deals, no-return sales and clearance items. This means if a customer bought something on sale and later doesn’t want it, they can’t return or exchange it.

Some retailers have specific conditions about where items can be returned. For example, in Melbourne David Jones requires boutique brands to be returned to specific branch locations. For example, items purchased instore from Chanel can only be returned at Elizabeth Street and Bourke Street Mall branches.

Other conditions might include no refunds/no exchanges on large electrical items, furniture or mattresses unless faulty or damaged. Or retailers may only offer instore credit or charge a 25% restocking fee when a customer cancels an order for a large or bulky item.

Many retailers, such as streetwear brand Culture Kings, also require a payment if the return process involves shipping.

As well as these conditions, retailers require any returned items to be in their original condition and sometimes, their original packaging. Being aware of these policies can help customers make more informed decisions and avoid being stuck with items they don’t want.

What to buy and where to get it

Certain items, such as off-season clothing, electronics and furniture are often discounted during EOFY sales, making it a good time to get them at reduced cost.

However, some items, like the latest Playstation or newest smart phone, may not be as heavily discounted and might be better bought at other times of the year.

Shoppers should also avoid buying items they are unlikely to use or consume before they expire including perishable goods like food, cosmetics and vitamins.

It’s also important to consider the value of the item and whether the discount offered during sales justifies the purchase, especially for big-ticket items that may require significant storage space or maintenance.

Customers should also consider where to buy their items. Online retailers often have competitive prices and a wide selection, but some customers may prefer to see the item before they purchase instore.

Multi-channel shopping is a combination of both instore and online shopping. It gives customers the flexibility to choose how and where they want to browse and purchase.

For example, some customers prefer to touch, feel and try a product instore but then make the purchase online for convenience, taking advantage of any free shipping offers and online discount.

Pressure tactics

It is important to be wary any deceptive tactics to persuade you to buy unwanted products.

For example, some stores might use misleading advertising or pressure tactics to convince customers to make purchases with the feeling of fear of missing out (FOMO).

Our research found FOMO played a role in panic buying.

During the EOFY sales, businesses may try to create a sense of urgency by claiming that items are selling out quickly or prices will increase soon.

For example, online sites might state a product is “low in stock”, “151 items have been sold today” or “25 people are watching this item”.

By being aware these tactics are intended to lock them into buying, customers can take their time to consider purchases carefully and avoid being swayed into buying things they do not really want or need.

Ultimately, the best approach for customers is to plan ahead, research prices and shop around to find the best deals for their needs.

Why we have EOFY sales

The original purpose of the EOFY is to mark the end of a 12-month accounting period for businesses and individuals. EOFY sales help businesses clear out last year’s stock and make way for new.

Moving stock also helps to improve the bottom line by converting unsold goods into revenue.

If consumers are savvy, they can find ways to make savings while also putting money back into the economy.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. "You can't be in two places at once": ATO boss warns of new tax crackdown

As our lives have changed quite a bit over the past two years, the ATO has warned one particular group of Australians are not reflecting this change when processing their tax returns.

The ATO says Australians who drive to work have become accustomed to filing a number of expenses for their car, but those types of expenses could land them in trouble this year.

In an interview, the ATO assistant commissioner Tim Loh said it would be looking very carefully at car-related expenses this tax time.

“What we are seeing is people continuing to claim car and travel expenses at pre-pandemic levels,” he said.

“We do expect car and travel expenses to go down quite significantly because if you’ve been working from home, you can’t be at two places at once.”

According to the ATO, travel to and from work cannot be claimed as a tax deduction but petrol costs for trips to a job-related task can be submitted.

If you are to be audited, you will have to prove to tax officials you used your car for work, and not just to buy groceries or visit your mates.

The ATO is preparing to crack down on Australians who are over-claiming work-related expenses to help with the rising cost of living.

One of the steepest rises in everyday goods is in petrol prices. We’ve seen them hit record highs in recent months as the war in Ukraine squeezes supplies.

With the national petrol price at 211.9 cents a litre, CommSec calculated an average Aussie family spent $296.66 a month filling up their car – just shy of the recent record high of $297.50 in May. It means that the average monthly fuel bill has increased by $74.48 compared to the beginning of 2022.

However, It’s not just motoring expenses the ATO will be keeping a close eye on. Rapid antigen tests are also an area the ATO will be looking at.

He said Australians who claimed rapid antigen tests on their tax return would also need to prove it was work-related and not for personal use.

“Now with those rapid antigen tests used for work purposes, you need to satisfy three rules: you must have spent the money yourself and not be reimbursed by your employer,” Mr Loh said.

“It must be related for work-related purposes.”

Big change to work-from-home expenses

After the lockdowns of the past 12 months, many of us will be claiming deductions for working from home. The good news is that this year, there is still an easy system in place for working out how much you’re owed.

Since the pandemic began in March 2020, professionals have been able to claim a flat 80 cent-an-hour rate for their expenses instead of having to manually add them up.

The flat-rate was meant to have ended on June 30, 2021 but the tax office extended it for another year as Sydney and Melbourne were put into long lockdowns.

That means you can use it on this year’s tax return, which you have until October 31st
to complete.

However, a big change is coming from July 1st, meaning that from the next financial year you will be required to keep your electricity, internet and phone bills and manually add up your expenses to claim a lower 52-cent an hour deduction if you’re working from home permanently.

It basically means that those of us working from home will have to get into the habit of keeping receipts in the new financial year.

The good and bad of what's coming in the new financial year

The new financial year is almost upon us, meaning a huge string of changes are right around the corner.

Kicking off on July the 1st, it’s an important mid-year milestone. From that date onwards, we will see major changes including: new laws and regulations, fees and charges, and taxes and benefits.

Here’s what you need to know before July the 1st, 2022.

Centrelink shake up

A huge Centrelink overhaul is coming, meaning big changes ahead for those on the JobSeeker program.

From July 1st, recipients who are required to complete the process of mutual obligations in order to receive welfare payments will be moved onto a points-based activation system (PBAS).

Those impacted will have to receive 100 points and do a minimum of five job searches per month to secure payment.

There is a list of more than 30 tasks and activities that each carry their own individual points value, with attending a job interview worth 20 points and a completing a job application worth five.

The PBAS will replace the current system where jobseekers are required to apply for 20 jobs every month.

Power costs to surge

Millions of families will see their electricity costs rise next month after the energy industry watchdog jacked up prices by hundreds per year.

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) will pass on hefty increases to the benchmark power price – which means bills will skyrocket by 18.3% in NSW, 12.6% in Queensland and 9.5% in South Australia in July.

Comparison site Finder urged Aussies to shop around before July 1st to avoid bill shock.

“You have two different types of energy plans on the market: Those that offer fixed rates for a certain period (such as 12 months) or others that have variable rates,” Finder energy expert Mariam Gabaji said.

“If you don’t like switching electricity plans often in search of the cheapest variable rates, you’re likely to benefit from a fixed-rate plan instead.”

Super changes

From July 1st, the percentage rate for the Super Guarantee will increase from 10% to 10.5%, which means employers will need to contribute extra cash into their staff super accounts.

Next month, the $450 monthly minimum wage threshold to qualify for employer Super Guarantee contributions will also be scrapped, which means all workers – except under-18s who work less than 30 hours per week – must receive super payments, no matter how little they happen to earn.

In July those aged 60 and over will be able to make contributions of up to $300,000 per person or $600,000 per couple into their super account using the so-called “downsizer measure” as long as they are eligible.

Major governmental changes

In the wake of Labor’s election win, a range of departmental and administrative changes will come into effect.

From the 1st of July, a new Department of Employment and Workplace Relations will be created to deliver the government’s workplace relations, jobs, skills and training agenda.

A new Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water will also be created, while the Department of Health will be renamed the Department of Health and Aged Care and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications will be renamed the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts.

The Department of Finance will gain responsibility for data policy, including the Digital Transformation Agency, as well as deregulation, and the Department of Home Affairs will gain responsibility for natural disaster response and mitigation, including the National Recovery and Resilience Agency.

The Attorney-General’s portfolio will also gain responsibility for criminal law enforcement and policy, including the Australian Federal Police.

Immigration

Short-term Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) subclass 482 visa holders who worked in Australia during the pandemic will have access to a new Australian permanent residency pathway from July 1st.

From then, TSS visa holders will be able to apply for permanent residency through the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream of the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa.

Applicants must have been in Australia between February 1st
2020 and December 14th, 2021 for at least one year, as well as meeting all other nomination and visa requirements for the TRT stream of the ENS visa.

Free medication

From July, the PBS Safety Net threshold for concession card holders will be lowered to $244.80.

That means concession card holders will receive their PBS medicines for free when they reach the lowered threshold.

Car prices jump

Changes to the Luxury Car Tax threshold mean that next month, the threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles will be increased by 6.6% cent to $84,916.

For all other vehicles it’s up by 3.9% to $71,849.

Childcare Relief

Aussie families with more than one child aged five years or younger will receive a higher rate of Child Care Subsidy for second and subsequent children from July 1st.

They may also receive backpay from Services Australia for any higher subsidy they were eligible for between March 7th and June 30th this year.

Telstra customers squeezed

From next month, Telstra’s mobile plan prices will increase in line with the Consumer Price Index.

That means the cost of basic and essential plans will rise by $3 per month, while premium plans will jump by $4.

Image: Shutterstock

3 coffee machines to avoid in the EOFY sales

Snapping up a reasonably priced coffee machine in the end of financial year sales is a smart way to save money on buying barista-made coffees – but only if it does a decent job. Some of the models we've tested performed so poorly they'll have you running straight back to your favourite cafe, KeepCup in hand.

We review capsule and espresso coffee machines from brands like Breville, DeLonghi, Electrolux, Nespresso and Sunbeam. We use an expert panel to rate the taste of the coffee, while our experienced kitchen testers score the machines on other measures like ease of use and temperature consistency.

The experts agree: you're better off leaving these three models on the shelf.

Just want the top scorers? Read our coffee machine reviews.

Sunbeam Café Barista EM5000

This barista-style espresso machine is great at serving up cup after cup at very consistent temperatures, but unfortunately the coffee is lacking in taste, with our expert tasting panel rating it an appalling 30 per cent.

If you're looking to perfect your latte art, you'll also be frustrated by this machine's mediocre milk frothing performance.

At $299, with an overall score of just 47 per cent, the Sunbeam Café Barista is definitely not the smartest way to get your morning fix.
Nescafe Dolce Gusto Lumio NCU600

You don't always need to spend a fortune on a coffee machine to get a good cuppa (the Kmart $89 espresso machine is a case in point), but in this instance, you get what you pay for.

The $99 Nescafe Dolce Gusto Lumio delivers poor-tasting coffee, poor milk frothing and inconsistent temperatures, contributing to an overall score of 49 per cent in our review.

It's also unpleasant to use, as the coffee can splash during delivery and the unit has no waste storage, meaning you have to remove every capsule manually after use.
Espressotoria Capino

Despite using a different capsule system, this machine bears an unpleasant resemblance to the Nescafe Dolce Gusto, with a price point of $99 and an overall score of 49 per cent.

Just like the Nescafe system, the Espressotoria produces poor-tasting coffee at inconsistent temperatures.

The machine doesn't come with a milk frother, but we bought the optional Veloce milk frother for $35 and – surprise, surprise – it also did a substandard job.
Coffee machine buying tips
If you're tossing up between a pod or capsule coffee machine and a manual espresso machine, there are a few factors to consider.

Pod or capsule machines are much easier to use and require very little cleaning. On the other hand, espresso machines require more work but generally have a better depth of flavour and let you make your coffee the way you like it.

But remember, a poor-quality espresso machine can still deliver mediocre flavour, and a badly designed pod or capsule machine can be tricky to use, so make sure you do your research before committing.

For more top tips, visit our coffee machine buying guide.

Written by Grace Smith.
