<p>The funniest joke of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival has been crowned, with the top ten hilarious quips also receiving honourable mentions. </p> <p>Thousands of performers flock to Scotland's capital each year to entertain and delight crowds at the Fringe in all areas of the arts, including live comedy. </p> <p>For the last 15 years, British entertainment channel U&Dave, owned by British broadcaster UKTV, has handed out the "Funniest Joke of the Fringe Award" by popular vote. </p> <p>Despite coming up against fierce competition, comedian Mark Simmons won with his joke, "I was going to sail around the globe in the world's smallest ship but I bottled it."</p> <p>A panel that included leading UK comedy critics and comedians attended hundreds of shows across the festival and submitted their 10 top jokes, before a shortlist of gags were anonymised was presented to 2,000 members of the British public to vote on the one that evoked the most laughter.</p> <p>Upon winning the prestigious award, Simmons, who was at the Fringe celebrating his 10 year anniversary as a stand-up comedian, said, "I'm really chuffed to win U&Dave's Funniest Joke of the Fringe. I needed some good news as I was just fired from my job marking exam papers, can't understand it, I always gave 110%."</p> <p>Check out the list of the top ten jokes from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as voted by the public below. </p> <p>1. "Not my King": Second coronation marred by protestors

<p>King Charles has celebrated his coronation a second time during a ceremony in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, just two months after being crowned King in London. </p> <p>The monarch was joined by Queen Camilla, and Prince and Princess of Wales, who are known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, for a Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication held in his honour. </p> <p>During the service inside St Giles Cathedral, the monarch was presented with the symbols of his authority in Scotland – the Crown, the Sceptre and the Sword of State.</p> <p>The new Elizabeth Sword, named in honour of the late monarch, was commissioned to replace the previous Sword of State as it had become too fragile, having been given to James IV by Pope Julius in 1507.</p> <p>The sword was carried into the cathedral by Olympic rower Dame Katherine Grainger.</p> <p>Despite the grand and emotional service, the ceremony was slightly marred by anti-monarch protestors outside.</p> <p>The protestors stood chanting "not my King" for hours on end so loudly, that the voices could be heard from inside the church during the quieter moments of the ceremony. </p> <p>Four protestors were later arrested for their disruption. </p> <p>Prior to the ceremony, Grant McKenzie from the Republic anti-monarchy pressure group, told the BBC's <em>Good Morning Scotland</em> programme that his group would be vocal at the event.</p> <p>"It's being forced upon us," McKenzie said. "We've got an unprecedented cost of living crisis. I don't think the public in the UK are particularly interested in their tax payer money being put towards a parade up and down the Royal Mile in Edinburgh - it's tone deaf.</p> <p>"Of course people are going to be able to enjoy it if that's what they want to do. Protests by their very nature are disruptive, we will be making ourselves visible and heard."</p> <p>The King and Queen didn't let the demonstrators get in the way of the proceedings, which was strengthened by the thousands of crowds who lined the streets of Edinburgh in support of the royal family. </p> <p>The tradition of a second coronation taking place in Scotland dates back over 400 years, with the late Queen Elizabeth also celebrating the event just weeks after her coronation in 1953. </p> <p><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p>

Tragic end for pensioner struck by royal motorcade

<p dir="ltr">Helen Holland, the 81-year-old woman who was struck by a police motorcade escorting the Duchess of Edinburgh, has died. </p> <p dir="ltr"><a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/news/news/elderly-woman-hospitalised-by-royal-motorcycle-escort">Helen was hit on May 10 at the junction of West Cromwell Road and Warwick Road in west London’s Earl’s Court</a>, and was taken to hospital after receiving treatment from paramedics at the scene.</p> <p dir="ltr">Her family confirmed the news of her passing, telling the<em> BBC </em>that while she had fought "for her life for nearly two weeks”, tragically “irreversible damage to her brain finally ended the battle”.</p> <p dir="ltr">Helen had suffered “multiple broken bones and massive internal injuries” in the crash, despite using the “safe route of [a] pedestrian crossing”, according to her son, Martin Holland. </p> <p dir="ltr">In the wake of the devastating incident, her family had announced that Helen was in a coma, with the police later revealing that she remained in a critical condition. </p> <p dir="ltr">In a statement reportedly shared with <em>Sky News</em>, the family had described Helen as a "beautiful, loving, kind, and caring lady who would always put anyone before herself.</p> <p dir="ltr">"The family are deeply saddened and shocked at the news Helen was involved in such a tragic accident.”</p> <p dir="ltr">They went on to share that while she had been 81 years old, she was “sprightly for her age and nothing stopped her living life to the full, spending precious time with her family, muddy walks with the dogs and lunches with friends is what she enjoyed most”, before asking that everyone keep her in their thoughts and prayers. </p> <p dir="ltr">Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace had announced that Sophie - the Duchess of Edinburgh - had offered her “heartfelt thoughts and prayers” to “the injured lady and her family”, and that she was “grateful for the swift response of emergency services and will keep abreast of developments".</p> <p dir="ltr">An investigation was launched by The Independent Office for Police Conduct soon after the event, and it remains ongoing, with the police watchdog assuring Helen’s family that they would keep them “regularly updated as the investigation progresses".</p> <p dir="ltr">That investigation involved examining footage from neary CCTV as well as footage from police body cameras. Additionally, officers who were present at the scene were to be interviewed, while the organisation sought other witnesses to come forward with any more information they might have.</p> <p dir="ltr">While the family waits for answers, they are also coming to terms with their difficult loss, with Helen’s grandson - Joe Strutter Holland - sharing on Facebook, “rest in peace Nanny (Helen) Holland. One of the kindest and most joyful souls you'll ever of had the pleasure of meeting. Elderly woman hospitalised by royal motorcycle escort

<p dir="ltr">A pensioner in her 80s is in critical condition after a collision with a police motorcycle that was escorting Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh.</p> <p dir="ltr">The rolling motorcade, manned by motorcycle outriders, was escorting the Duchess when the collision happened.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Duchess was being escorted by the Met Police‘s Special Escort Group, who provide armed escorts for Royal Family members, VIPs, protected members of the Government, visiting royals, heads of state and other visiting dignitaries.</p> <p dir="ltr">Met Police released a <a href="https://news.met.police.uk/news/woman-injured-following-collision-with-police-motorcycle-in-west-london-466651#:~:text=A%20woman%20has%20been%20injured,Road%2C%20Earls%20Court%2C%20SW5." target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> that said: “A woman has been injured after being involved in a collision with a police motorcycle in west London.</p> <p dir="ltr">“At approximately 15:21hrs on Wednesday, 10 May a police motorcycle on escort duties was involved in a collision with a member of the public on West Cromwell Road, Earls Court, SW5.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance attended and a woman, aged in her 80s, was taken to hospital.</p> <p dir="ltr">“She remains there in a critical condition. Her family have been informed”.</p> <p dir="ltr">Road closures were in place and two bikes – one with King Charles‘ cypher – were seen inside the cordon after the collision happened.</p> <p dir="ltr">A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace has said: “The Duchess’s heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the injured lady and her family.</p> <p dir="ltr">“She is grateful for the swift response by the emergency services and will keep abreast of developments.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Further comment at this time would not be appropriate while the incident is being investigated.”</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Getty</em></p>

King Charles III “saving” title for Princess Charlotte

<p dir="ltr">King Charles III is reportedly saving the title of Duchess of Edinburgh for his granddaughter Princess Charlotte.</p> <p dir="ltr">It was previously expected that when Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, died in 2021, the title would be given to Prince Edward. </p> <p dir="ltr">But Charles inherited the title and now its future is up in air with talks of him saving it for Princess Charlotte as she is third in line to the throne. </p> <p dir="ltr">"It would be a fitting way to remember the Queen – who, of course, had the title Duchess of Edinburgh – and a way for His Majesty to honour the line of succession,” a source told The Mail on Sunday. </p> <p dir="ltr">The Palace did not release any comment about the title. </p> <p dir="ltr">Princess Charlotte is the first female in the Royal Family to not be removed from her line of succession by her younger brother thanks to the Succession to the Crown Act (2013).</p> <p dir="ltr">The new law saw women born in the Royal Family after October 2011 holding their place of succession no matter if they had a younger male in the family. </p> <p dir="ltr">"It is not beyond the realms of possibility that she will accede the throne if, for example, Prince George does not have children," the source continued. </p> <p dir="ltr">The decision of who becomes the Duke or Duchess of Edinburgh was always going to be King Charles’ decision.</p> <p dir="ltr">It was also his parents’ wish that Prince Edward would become the next Duke of Edinburgh, but now only time will tell. </p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: Getty</em></p>

"Last great journey": Queen’s coffin arrives in Edinburgh

<p dir="ltr">Queen Elizabeth II's coffin arrived in Edinburgh on Sunday following a six-hour journey from her summer home in the Scottish Highlands.</p> <p dir="ltr">Her solemn arrival was greeted by thousands of people at the city's Royal Mile; Her Majesty's body will remain there for two days to allow people to pay their final respects.</p> <p dir="ltr">The queen's daughter Anne and her sons, Princes Andrew and Edward, curtsied and bowed as the coffin was carried inside by soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Scotland.</p> <p dir="ltr">This is just ahead of the Queen’s state funeral at Westminster Abbey in London on September 19.</p> <p dir="ltr">Following her <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/news/news/queen-elizabeth-ii-dead-at-96" target="_blank" rel="noopener">death</a>, the Queen's son, King Charles III, spoke of her long 70-year reign.</p> <p dir="ltr">"Her dedication and devotion as Sovereign never wavered, through times of change and progress, through times of joy and celebration, and through times of sadness and loss,” he said.</p> <p dir="ltr">He also spoke about looking forward to following in his mother’s footsteps.</p> <p dir="ltr">"It will no longer be possible for me to give so much of my time and energies to the charities and issues for which I care so deeply,” King Charles III continued.</p> <p dir="ltr">"But I know this important work will go on in the trusted hands of others.</p> <p dir="ltr">"And to my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: Thank you.</p> <p dir="ltr">"Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years.</p> <p dir="ltr">"May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: Getty</em></p>

The world's best cities in 2022 revealed

<p>The top 53 cities in the world have been crowned, after Time Out asked 20,000 city dwellers around the world to share their opinion.</p> <p>The guide's <a href="https://www.timeout.com/things-to-do/best-cities-in-the-world" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener">2022 World's Best Cities Index</a> revealed that Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, has been voted the best city in 2022, due to its beauty, history and walkability. </p> <p>The Illinois capital city of Chicago came in second, the Colombian city of Medellin in third, Glasgow in fourth place and The Netherlands' capital of Amsterdam in fifth place. </p> <p>The ranking is now in its fifth year, as it calls on those who live in a city to "point people in the direction of the places that locals are raving about" and putting an emphasis on "the things that make cities great places to visit as well as to live".</p> <p>Edinburgh took the crown as the best city in world, with locals calling the city "ever-evolving". </p> <p>Time Out added about the city, "Self-expression is encouraged, with 88 per cent of locals saying it is easy to express who you are in the city. It's something that’s celebrated every summer with the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which this year will be marking its 75th anniversary."</p> <p>Chicago's second place spot is largely due to the city's thriving art and culture scene, with 95% of people claiming there is always something new to do. </p> <p>The guide adds, "Whether you want to try world-class dining from high-end restaurants to outstanding family-run eateries, party until 4am at historic clubs, spend a day soaking up the sun along Lake Michigan, see iconic artworks or just wander among different neighbourhoods – all this is putting the city on the map for visitors."</p> <p>Two Aussie cities made the list, with Melbourne coming in at 15th and Sydney taking out the 46th spot. </p> <p>One New Zealand city also featured in the list, with Auckland coming in at 47th. </p> <p>Check out the entire list of the top 53 cities for 2022 below. </p> <p>1. Prince Charles sparks new family feud rumours

<p dir="ltr">Prince Charles is allegedly refusing to give his younger brother Edward the title of Duke of Edinburgh after Prince Philip’s death.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Earl of Wessex has been waiting for his father’s title for over twenty years, however rumours are swirling that Charles is not so keen on fulfilling his brother’s wishes.</p> <p dir="ltr"><img style="width: 500px; height: 281.25px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7842383/charles-edward-1.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/29c686a3981c470dbf6d9740e42df3c4" /></p> <p dir="ltr">The title of the Duke of Edinburgh was passed down to Philip’s eldest son, Charles following his death in April.</p> <p dir="ltr">However, the title has long been expected to be passed down to Edward.</p> <p dir="ltr">In 1999, Buckingham Palace announced to the world that Edward would succeed his father in the dukedom “in due course”.</p> <p dir="ltr">At the time, he had the blessing of the Queen and Prince Philip.</p> <p dir="ltr">After his marriage to Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1999, the Queen gifted him a title of his choosing, the earldom of Wessex.</p> <p dir="ltr"><img style="width: 500px; height: 281.25px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7842385/charles-edward-3.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/d3cac757b26e4cc39c8e368e7878650b" /></p> <p dir="ltr">However, Charlie may not hand the title to his younger brother, with the <em>Sunday Times</em> reporting he is reassessing his future.</p> <p dir="ltr">A source close to Charles told the newspaper: “The prince is the Duke of Edinburgh as it stands, and it is up to him what happens to the title. It will not go to Edward.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Another revealed: “Edinburgh won’t go to them (the Wessexes) as far as the prince is concerned.”</p> <p dir="ltr">When Charles becomes king, the title of the Duke of Edinburgh will merge with the crown, meaning the new patriarch will be able to grant Edward the title of Duke of Edinburgh.</p> <p dir="ltr"><img style="width: 500px; height: 281.25px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7842384/charles-edward-2.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/5e81c807737b470686dc12dba2efd3ec" /></p> <p dir="ltr">In an interview with the BBC last month, Edward made it clear the new title was a decision completely in his older brother’s hands.</p> <p dir="ltr">The royal was asked: “You will be the next Duke of Edinburgh, when the Prince of Wales becomes king, that is quite something to take on?”</p> <p dir="ltr">Edward responded: “It was fine in theory, ages ago when it was sort of a pipe dream of my father’s … and of course it will depend on whether or not the Prince of Wales, when he becomes king, whether he’ll do that, so we’ll wait and see. Prince William accused of “flirting” in Edinburgh with 96-year-old

<p><span>Prince William continued his royal tour of Scotland on Sunday, by visiting the Queens Bay Lodge Care home in Edinburgh.</span><br /><br /><span>The royal couldn't shake a flirty encounter though, with some of their residents including 96-year-old Betty Magee.</span><br /><br /><span>"It's customary in these parts to give a lady a kiss on the cheek," she informed Prince William, 38, as he sat across from her at a table.</span><br /><br /><span>"Oh, you are sweet. This also means that his wife and Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, is now regarded as the Duchess of Edinburgh.</p> <p dir="ltr">Once he becomes king, the title will be passed down to his youngest brother.</p> <p dir="ltr">This goes against the Letters Patent issued by George VI, which gave Philip the title in 1947 and stipulated the duke’s eldest son would inherit the title.</p> <p dir="ltr">But, when Charles becomes king the title can be re-granted to Edward.</p> <p dir="ltr">The decision to appoint Edward as the eventual Duke of Edinburgh was announced in 1999, following his marriage to Sophie Rhys-Jones and adoption of the title of Earl of Wessex.</p> <p dir="ltr">As a trustee and Chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh Award program, Edward’s succession as the Duke of Edinburgh also recognises his commitment to the program.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Duke of Edinburgh Award program, one of Philip’s educational initiatives, has been undertaken by over eight million children globally and involves pursuing a well-rounded education through acts of service, physical activity, camping trips, and personal hobbies.</p>

Though Charles and Diana’s marriage ended in divorce, letters released by<span> </span><em>The Telegraph</em><span> </span>between Prince Philip and his former daughter-in-law appear to prove they remained good friends despite no longer being family. Car crash victim "chuffed" as Prince Philip finally apologises with personal letter

<p>Prince Philip has apologised for his part in a car crash that left two women injured earlier this month, blaming the accident on sunlight glare that obscured his view.</p> <p>The 97-year-old royal was driving near the Queen’s Sandringham Estate on January 17 when his Land Rover <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/caring/prince-philip-involved-in-car-crash-very-shocked-and-shaken/">collided</a> with a Kia carrying two women and an infant. One of the women, Emma Fairweather, suffered a broken wrist from the crash.</p> <p>“I would like you to know how very sorry I am for my part in the accident at the Babingley cross-roads,” Prince Philip said in an official letter obtained by<span> </span><em>The</em> <em>Mirror</em>.</p> <p>“I have been across that crossing any number of times and I know very well the amount of traffic that uses that main road … the sun was shining low over the main road. I was pleasantly surprised because of the personalised nature,” said Fairweather.</p> <p>“A lot of people said it was unrealistic that I wanted that human kindness from Prince Philip – which is what I saw this letter as … He’s tried to give an explanation so I appreciate that, whether I agree with it or not.”</p> <p>The apology emerged following a widespread backlash of him and the Buckingham Palace over the handling of the incident. Prior to the letter, which was dated January 21, Fairweather had complained about the royal family’s lack of response.</p> <p>“I’m lucky to be alive and he hasn’t even said sorry,” said Fairweather. “It has been such a traumatic and painful time and I would have expected more of the Royal Family.”</p> <p>The Duke of Edinburgh was also spotted driving on a public road without a seatbelt only two days after the crash.</p> <p>Meanwhile, an investigation into the collision continues. </p> <p>“As is standard procedure with injury collisions, the incident will be investigated and any appropriate action taken,” said the Norfolk police force.</p> <p>“We are aware of the public interest in this case. However, as with any other investigation, it would be inappropriate to speculate on the causes of the collision until an investigation is carried out.”</p>

Prince Philip “rudest human I've ever met”

<p>Just days after his frightening car crash which left two women injured, Prince Philip has been deemed the “rudest person ever” by controversial British TV host, Piers Morgan.</p> <p>In a sour recount of an experience Morgan had with the 97-year-old Duke of Edinburgh, he described Prince Philip as “breathtakingly offhand".</p> <p>The terrible experience for the TV host happened over 20 years ago at Buckingham Palace, when he was invited to Prince Charles' 50th birthday celebration.</p> <p>Morgan claims Prince Philip refused to shake his hand, “barking menacingly” to him, as the former tabloid journalist described it, “Who are you?”</p> <p>At that time, Morgan was the editor for the <em>Daily Mirror </em>newspaper and had confessed to the royal that those surrounding him at that moment were tabloid journalists.</p> <p>Morgan said he understood why the Prince would be so rude – scandals surrounding the royals were popular amongst tabloid journalists – but what shocked him most “was how he was prepared to be SO rude to someone who was an invited guest at his son’s birthday party".</p> <p>“It gave me a rare personal insight into what a disagreeable character the grand old Duke can be when he chooses,” Morgan added.</p> <p>Prince Philip has also come under fire from Emma Fairweather, a woman who broke her wrist last week in a car crash involving the Duke, whilst he was driving a Range Rover.</p> <p>She has said she wants <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/finance/legal/royal-justice-victim-wants-prince-philip-charged-over-car-crash/?fbclid=IwAR0XNfVqEJ26yRpKTDy5jR62RqK0NwnbrasueZBf7bx4UYT2wfRdxu-9u64">Prince Philip to be prosecuted</a> and said he has not issued an apology to her since the incident that occurred on Thursday.</p> <p>The woman also has labelled the royal as “highly insensitive and inconsiderate,” after he was seen driving without wearing a seatbelt just days after the car crash.</p> <p>What do you think of the incident between Prince Philip and Piers Morgan? The Queen drives without seatbelt after Prince Philip’s car crash

<p>Queen Elizabeth II has been seen driving without wearing a seatbelt only a day after her husband Prince Philip’s car crash.</p> <p>On Friday, the 92-year-old was seen driving her Range Rover on a public road in Sandringham, less than two kilometres from the Prince’s accident scene.</p> <p>The Queen is the only person allowed to drive without a license in Great Britain. While the UK laws require drivers to wear a seatbelt, the Queen is immune from civil suit or criminal prosecution.</p> <p>However, Prince Philip as the Duke of Edinburgh is still liable for civil and criminal proceedings and will be treated the same as any other individual under the law.</p> <p>The day prior, the 97-year-old Prince Philip <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/caring/prince-philip-involved-in-car-crash-very-shocked-and-shaken/">collided</a> with a Kia when he was driving his Land Rover, leaving two women with minor injuries. Prince William speaks out about the pressure on young people

<p>Prince William has spoken out about the pressure facing young people growing up in today’s world, with the royal family member criticising social media.</p> <p>The father of two, speaking at a gala dinner on Monday, said the pressure was, “Almost certainly more than even for my generation not so long ago.”</p> <p>“Children are tested more than ever before and are being prepared to enter a highly competitive work market,” he continued.</p> <p>“On top of this, there is a sense of being ‘on call’ 24/7 through social media, and the subsequent strains this can have on relationships, home life and, ultimately, a child’s sense of their own self-worth. It can all take its toll.”</p> <p>The Duke of Edinburgh said he believed it was important to give children the tools of “courage, discipline and resilience” while they are young.</p> <p>“If you are not taught these skills at a young age, it is very, very difficult to learn them as an adult,” he added. “It is the mark of a civilised and loving society that everyone is given the chance to do their best."</p> <p>What are your thoughts? <p><em><strong>Lucy Jones takes us through the Edinburgh Festival and explains why everyone needs to go at least once in their life.</strong></em></p> <p><strong>What is it?</strong></p> <p>Only the largest arts festival in the world! It’s actually made up of two festivals – the Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It makes for three unmissable weeks of theatre, music, comedy and art in the theatres, pubs, clubs and street corners of the Scottish capital.</p> <p><strong>Why is it special?</strong></p> <p>The Edinburgh Festival takes over the whole city and you can feel the buzz in the air as you walk through the streets. Thousands of people flood in from all over the world, turning Edinburgh into a noisy, chaotic, exciting and vibrant world. You don’t need to plan ahead and organise tickets months out either – there are lots available on the day to all kinds of shows, so you can just roll up and see what's playing. There’s also an incredible vibe around all the bars and pubs in the city. The Scots love a drink and they all switch into party mode during the festival. Then, of course, there are the newbies trying to break into the business and who are giving their all to crack the big time.</p> <p><strong>What about Edinburgh itself?</strong><br /> Edinburgh is easily one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. It’s an 18<sup>th</sup> century beauty that was dreamed up as a city of high culture and education, populated by literary giants and forward thinking scientists. The imposing Edinburgh Castle is perched on a hill overlooking the city while the Old Town’s jumble of medieval houses run along beneath it. The New Town is more spacious and genteel, but just as charming.</p> <p><strong>When is it?</strong></p> <p>The festival is held in August each year. In 2017 it will run from August 4 to 28.</p>
