Essendon coach dies aged 59 following cancer battle

Essendon VFL and assistant coach Dale Tapping has passed away aged 59 following a battle with cancer.

The football veteran was first diagnosed with myeloma, an aggressive form of blood cancer, two years ago.

Despite his health battle, Tapping played a key role leading the Bombers forwards in 2024, and late last year, he was announced as the club's VFL coach for 2025 and 2026.

Tapping passed away on Tuesday morning surrounded by his family.

“On behalf of everyone at the Essendon Football Club, we are deeply saddened by Dale’s loss,” club president Dave Barham said.

“Dale was a man of impeccable character who was universally loved and respected by those who were lucky enough to have crossed paths with him over his 28 years in the football industry.

“Our club’s thoughts are with his wife Kellie, children Summer and Mason, and the extended Tapping family at this most challenging of times.

“He has left a lasting impact on the Essendon Football Club and across the broader football community, and will be remembered as a selfless individual whose passion and care for people and the game was evident in everything he did.”

The Essendon Football Club is in mourning after the passing of VFL Senior Coach Dale Tapping on Tuesday morning.

A universally loved football person, Tapping bravely fought Myeloma, a form of blood cancer, for over two years.

Rest in peace, Tapps ❤️

— Essendon FC (@essendonfc) February 3, 2025

Essendon's AFL coach Brad Scott also paid tribute to his friend and colleague.

“Dale was an outstanding coach, but his true legacy lies in the profound impact he had on players and staff personally,” Scott said.

“His dedication to their growth — both on and off the field — along with his genuine love for seeing people succeed were qualities admired by all.

“It was a privilege to have coached with him, and his legacy at the club will endure through the players and staff he mentored throughout his career.

“Dale will be deeply missed by the AFL industry and everyone at the Bombers. Our thoughts are with his wife Kellie, and children Summer and Mason, who have shown incredible strength throughout this difficult time.”

Brisbane Lions head coach and former colleague Chris Fagan also paid tribute, by recalling Tapping's impact on his first years at the club.

“I met Dale at a Leading Teams leadership seminar in 2016. I immediately admired his enthusiasm and love for coaching and AFL football,” Fagan said.

He also recalled how Tapping's positive and resilient attitude helped the Brisbane Lions progress, adding that the VFL coach's “fingerprints are all over” their 2023 premiership.

“He was a fantastic football person, a super coach, a great Dad to Summer and Mason and husband to Kel. We will all miss him dearly.”

Tapping first went public with his diagnosis in April 2023, sharing how difficult it had been to decide how to tell their kids.

“Talking to them, that was ... I’m getting a bit emotional now,” he said at the time.

“That’d be the hardest conversation I’ve ever had to have."

He is survived by his wife Kellie, and children Summer and Mason.

Image: X

Teen found not guilty of murdering Brisbane mum

A teenager has been found not guilty of murdering Brisbane mother Emma Lovell, with her heart-broken widow shedding tears at the verdict.

The now 18-year-old faced trial on the allegation that he had seen a knife in his co-offender's hand and knew he was armed when the pair broke into the Lovell home on Boxing Day in 2022.

The main offender fatally stabbed Emma and hurt her husband Lee in the struggle that followed.

With the case largely dependant on crucial split-second CCTV, Justice Michael Copley ruled he could not "be satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that the accused knew the other teen was in possession of the knife".

The teenager was found not guilty of Ms Lovell's murder or manslaughter and also acquitted of unlawful wounding, but was found guilty of burglary and assault in company.

Outside the court, Lee Lovell became emotional as he told reporters, "I'm not feeling too great at the moment - the verdict was a joke. I don't feel justified for Emma one bit."

"You try and do the best you can for her and I don't feel I've been able to do that."

Mr Lovell said legislation needed to be changed in order for victims and their families to have justice.

"You are a part of killing someone and you get a burglary charge. What does that say for anyone going forward," he said.

"We are the ones with a life sentence now."

Cancer-causing chemicals found in Aussie tap water sparks safety concerns

A landmark ruling in the US has sparked safety concerns over Australian tap water, with many wondering if it is safe to drink.

After the US tightened their regulations around drinking tap water, cutting the maximum level of cancer-causing so-called “forever chemicals” allowed, experts have urged Australia to do the same.

Earlier this year, the US Environmental Protection Agency found there was “no safe level of exposure” of the chemicals perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in drinking water and they were likely to cause cancer.

The toxic substances have also been linked to kidney and liver disease, thyroid dysregulation, reproductive problems, and developmental problems.

According to a federally funded University of Queensland study published in 2011, Australia permits per-and-poly-fluoroalkyl (PFAS) substances at levels up to 140 times higher than those allowed in the US.

Health Minister Mark Butler has asked key political players, including Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly, for an urgent briefing following the US developments.

The National Health and Medical Research Council, which shapes the nation’s water rules, is reviewing its guidelines relating to the chemicals, and that could be expedited ahead of its 2025 end date.

“Australian drinking water is regularly monitored for the presence of chemicals, including PFAS, to ensure those are within the limits assessed as safe by Australian regulators,” a spokesperson for the Health Minister said.

“This independent review will consider recent guidance and reviews from international and national jurisdictions and determine whether they are suitable to adopt or adapt for Australia.”

Nicholas Chartres, a senior research fellow at the University of Sydney, called for a precautionary approach and immediate widespread testing of the nation’s water supplies.

“The government needs to take action. They need to be testing the water (and) it will come at a cost,” he said.

Is the Barbie movie a bold step to reinvent and fix past wrongs or a clever ploy to tap a new market?

Lauren Gurrieri, RMIT University

After a months-long marketing blitz, the much-hyped Barbie movie is released this week.

From a Malibu Barbie dreamhouse listed on AirBnB, an AI tool that transforms selfies into Barbie movie posters and multiple Barbie-themed brand collaborations ranging from nail polish to roller skates, Barbie is everywhere.

She has even gone viral as a fashion trend known as Barbiecore, exploding across social media with people embracing vibrant pink hues and hyper feminine aesthetics. A Barbie world is upon us.

Although some have criticised this saturation strategy, it is a very deliberate marketing ploy to revitalise and redefine a brand with a contested position and history.

As well as attracting adults who grew up with Barbie and are curious to see what’s changed, the reinvention is drawing in those younger fans swept up by the tsunami of marketing and merchandise.

Despite being one of the most trusted brands with a value of approximately $US700 million, Barbie has long attracted feminist criticism for fuelling outdated and problematic “plastic fantastic” sexist stereotypes and expectations.

The Barbie backlash

Only a few years back, Barbie was a brand in crisis. Sales plummeted across 2011 to 2015 against the cultural backdrop of a rise in body positivity and backlash against a doll that represented narrow ideals and an impossible beauty standard.

After all, at life-size Barbie represents a body shape held by less than 1 in 100,000 real people. In fact, she is so anatomically impossible that, if she were real, she would be unable to lift her head, store a full liver or intestines, or menstruate.

The backlash has also been in response to growing concerns about how she influences child development, particularly how and what children learn about gender. Barbie has been identified as a risk factor for thin-ideal internalisation and body dissatisfaction for young girls, encouraging motivation for a thinner shape that damages body image and self esteem.

And despite the multiple careers Barbie has held over the decades, research highlights that girls who play with Barbie believe they have fewer career options than boys. This speaks to the power of toys to reinforce gender stereotypes, roles and expectations, and how Barbie has imported narrow ideals of femininity, girlhood and womanhood into young girls’ lives.

Reinventing a long-established icon

In response to this backlash, Mattel launched a new range of Barbies in 2016 that were promoted as diverse, representing different body shapes, sizes, hair types and skin tones. This was not without criticism, with “curvy” Barbie still considered thin and dolls named in ways that drew attention foremost to their bodies.

From a white, well-dressed, middle-class, girl-next-door with friends of a similar ilk, Barbie has since been marketed as a symbol of diversity and inclusion. To signify the extent of the transformation, Mattel’s executives gave this project the code name “Project Dawn”.

Mattel - like many other brands joining the “inclusivity revolution” - knew that diversity sells, and they needed to make their brand relevant for contemporary consumers.

Diversity initiatives included a line of female role model dolls, promoted as “introducing girls to remarkable women’s stories to show them you can be anything”.

Barbie was also given a voice in the form of Barbie Vlogs, where she expressed her views on issues including depression and the sorry reflex. A gender neutral collection called “creatable world” was added in 2019 to open up gender expression possibilities when playing with Barbies.

Such efforts were crucial to undoing missteps of the past, such as a “Teen Talk Barbie” that was programmed to say “Math class is tough!”, or the compulsory heterosexuality that Barbie has long advanced.

The latest step in Barbie’s transformation

Barbie the film is simply the next step in an evolution to make brand Barbie inclusive. And with a rumoured film budget of $100 million, the supporting marketing machine provides a critical opportunity to reset the Barbie narrative.

With Greta Gerwig, acclaimed director of female-led stories such as Little Women and Lady Bird at the helm, and a diverse cast of Barbies of different races, body types, gender identities and sexual preferences, the film and its creators have sought to assure audiences of the film’s feminist leanings.

Addressing the complicated history of Barbie is crucial for audiences who grew up and played with the doll and are grappling with introducing her to the next generation of doll consumers.

Yet, Robbie Brenner, executive producer of Mattel Films, has explicitly stated that Gerwig’s Barbie is “not a feminist movie”. Indeed, the main character still represents a narrow beauty standard - tall, thin, blonde, white - with diverse characters in place to support her narrative.

Which begs the question: are these inclusion initiatives simply emblematic of diversity washing, where the language and symbolism of social justice are hijacked for corporate profit? Or do they represent a genuine effort to redress the chequered history of a brand that promotes poor body image, unrealistic ideals and rampant materialism?

What is clear is that in today’s climate where brands are increasingly rewarded for taking a stand on sociopolitical issues, brand Barbie’s attempts to reposition as inclusive have paid off: sales are now booming.

Seemingly, Barbie’s famous tagline that “anything is possible” has shown itself to be true.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. “I stepped away from my life”: Emma Watson’s candid birthday admission

Emma Watson has shared an honest admission about the last few years of her life in the wake of her 33rd birthday.

The Harry Potter star took to Instagram to share a series of portraits, as she returned to the public eye to share what she had been up to in her personal life.

Watson’s last acting credit dates back to 2019 when she starred in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women, and ever since Watson has taken a step back from Hollywood.

The British actress admitted she had wanted to extend her “Covid cocoon” after sharing why she “stepped away” from her life.

“This is 33. “I didn’t come to play”: Bruce Willis’ wife smacks down trolls

Emma Heming Willis has been forced to shut down the heartless trolls targeting her in the wake of husband Bruce Willis’ dementia diagnosis.

In a video posted to social media, the 44-year-old model throws away claims that she’s been using Bruce for her “five minutes” of fame, and instead declares that she will turn them “into 10 because I'm always going to advocate for my husband.”

Emma - who has spoken openly about her support for Bruce - once again stressed that she would be using this opportunity to raise awareness, before she was “going to turn my grief, and my anger, and my sadness, and do something good, around something that feels less than.”

“So, watch this space,” she said, “because I didn’t come to play.”

Emma’s message comes barely three days after she reached out to followers, “caregivers, or dementia care specialists navigating this world” alike, seeking advice on how to help “get your loved ones out in the world safely”.

“If you are someone who is looking after someone who has dementia,” she said in the clip, “you know how difficult and how stressful it can be, just to get them out into the world and navigate them safely - even just to get a cup of coffee.”

And while the response to her post was overwhelmingly positive, the cruel few determined to make things worse for everyone just had to say their piece, and to prompt Emma’s fight back.

They were nowhere to be seen in her latest post - possibly hiding with their tails tucked between their legs - and instead, she was once more met with an outpouring of support.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; "Any tips?": Bruce Willis’ wife posts heartfelt plea

Bruce Willis’ wife, Emma Heming Willis has shared an emotional plea after the actor’s devastating diagnosis.

Emma took to Instagram to ask families of dementia sufferers for advice on how to help their loved ones navigate the world safely.

“To other caregivers or dementia care specialists navigating this world…. Any tips or advice on how to get your loved ones out in the world safely?” she captioned the post.

Emma started off the video by raising awareness about dementia and how stressful it is as a caregiver to help their loved ones navigate this illness.

“If you are someone who is looking after someone who has dementia, you know how difficult and how stressful it can be, just to get them out into the world and navigate them safely - even just to get a cup of coffee,” she said.

She also called out the photographers trying to get exclusive images and video footage of Bruce while he was out.

“It’s clear there’s still a lot of education that needs to be put forth,” she said in the video as a PSA.

Bruce, 67, was spotted out and about last week, for the first time since his family shared that had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

“To the photographers and video people that are trying to get those exclusives of my husband out and about, just keep your space. I know this is your job, but maybe just keep your space.”

“For the video people, please don’t be yelling at my husband asking him how he’s doing, whatever, the woohoo-ing, the yippee ki yay’s, just don’t do it.”

“Give him the space. Allow for our family or whoever’s with him that day to be able to get him from point A to point B safely,” she pleaded.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Emma Heming Willis (@emmahemingwillis)

Many fans have shared their support and shared their own experiences.

“My mom is newly struggling with dementia and everything is confusing and scary. New details surrounding Emma Pattison’s prior arrest

Warning: This article contains distressing content that some readers may find confronting.

It is now known that Emma Pattison, the headmistress at a private school in the UK who police believe was shot dead by her husband, made a distress call to a family member just hours before she was discovered.

Further to that, new details have emerged that reveal that Mrs Pattison was arrested by Surrey police following a domestic row with her husband, George, seven years ago.

Mr Pattison telephoned police one evening just prior to midnight, claiming that Mrs Pattison had slapped him around the face in their home.

Only a short time later – two minutes or so – Mr Pattison then called the station back to ask the police officers not to come, saying that the matter was inconsequential and that he had overreacted.

However, Surrey police decided to proceed with the home visit to investigate the complaint, and arrested Mrs Pattison on suspicion of common assault.

Mrs Pattison was then questioned in the presence of a solicitor, and was subsequently released without charge.

While a full investigation into their deaths has commenced, Surrey police are currently refusing to discuss Mrs Pattison’s arrest seven years ago in 2016, stating instead that autopsy results on the bodies of all three of the deceased are expected by the end of the week.

Police have yet to disclose the official cause of death, but are confident no one else was involved in the "isolated" incident.

Detectives confirmed a firearm registered to George, of which he had a license for, was found at the scene and they are treating the tragedy as a double murder and suicide.

Detectives suspect George killed his wife Emma, 45, and little Lettie before taking his own life.

Detective Chief Inspector Kimball Edey, senior investigating officer on the case, said, “This is an incredibly traumatic incident and we are working around the clock to investigate and understand the exact circumstances which led to this point."

Don't go it alone. "I broke down": Emma Watkins opens up on emotional meaning behind latest outfit

While spotting celebrities in gorgeous gowns isn’t unusual, Emma Watkins’ latest appearance in a pink and gold dress has more meaning than it seems.

The former yellow Wiggle revealed that the frock was designed with a particular person in mind, which she wore as an ambassador for Frocktober.

"The dress that I'm wearing isn't just a pretty dress. [It was] actually created by a beautiful designer, Jaimie Sortino, and it's in honour of his cousin Jenna that passed away,” she told 9Honey.

Jenna Crierie was 33 and eleven years into her battle with ovarian cancer, the most lethal gynaecological cancer, when she passed away.

"I never actually had a chance to meet her, but I've met Jaimie a few times, that's why those pictures and the dress are quite special," Watkins said.

"It really is another reminder of the lives that we've lost due to this disease… even though half of us didn't actually get to meet her, it felt like she was there."

Endometriosis, a condition which affects one in nine Australian women including Watkins, is among the known risk factors for ovarian cancer, though there are no early detection tests.

Watkins recalled how she was brought to tears when she met Leanne Flynn, one of millions of women who had ovarian cancer that was caught too late, for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation’s Frocktober campaign.

"She was telling her story about what she's been going through for the last five years, the multiple surgeries and tests. I basically just cried," Watkins said.

"I broke down in front of the audience, I wasn't expecting to hear such a poignant and connected story to do with the disease itself. Prince Harry, Elizabeth Hurley and Elton John suing Daily Mail

Prince Harry, Elton John and Elizabeth Hurley are leading a charge of celebrities and other individuals who have launched legal action against the publisher of the British Daily Mail newspaper over alleged phone-tapping and other breaches of privacy.

The group includes the actresses Elizabeth Hurley and Sadie Frost, Elton John’s partner and filmmaker David Furnish, and Doreen Lawrence, the mother of Black teenager Stephen Lawrence who was murdered in a racist attack in 1993.

The individuals are aware of evidence pointing to breaches of privacy by Associated Newspapers, who publish the Daily Mail newspaper, Mail on Sunday and Mail online.

The evidence gathered includes recovered listening devices that were placed inside people’s cars and homes as well as commissioning the bugging of live, private telephone calls, law firm Hamlins said in a statement.

Prince Harry is just one of the celebrities in question who have a turbulent past with the British tabloids, with Harry and Meghan previously saying they would have “zero engagement” with four major British papers, including the Daily Mail, accusing them of false and invasive coverage.

The couple also cited media intrusion as a major factor in their decision to step down from royal duties and move to the United States.

Associated Newspapers have refuted any and all allegations against illegal phone-tapping, as a spokesperson said the publisher “utterly and unambiguously” refuted the “preposterous smears”.

They said, “These unsubstantiated and highly defamatory claims - based on no credible evidence - appear to be simply a fishing expedition by claimants and their lawyers.”

Aussies make history at Commonwealth Games

Australia’s star swimmers have claimed an absolute bounty of gold and new world records in the pool on day three of this year’s Commonwealth Games.

After securing a record-equalling tenth gold medal in one of the relays over the weekend, 28-year-old Emma McKeon won gold again in the 50m freestyle final, overtaking the likes of Ian Thorpe, Susie O’Neill and Leisel Jones as the first athlete with 11 Commonwealth games gold medals to their name.

Speaking to the media on the pool deck, McKeon shed a few tears and was comforted by fellow Aussie Meg Harris, who took silver in the 50m race, as she talked about finding it “hard to be proud of herself”.

"It is special. It kind of makes me reflect on the last eight years or so since my first Commonwealth Games and I can sort of see how far I’ve come as a person and as an athlete," she said.

"To be honest I kind of find it hard to be proud of myself at times. Cody Simpson and Emma McKeon dispel rumours

Olympian Emma McKeon and pop star Cody Simpson have discussed how "serious" their relationship is in their first joint interview.

The couple sat down with Denham Hitchcock on Channel Seven's Spotlight, as they were quizzed on their romance.

During the sit-down interview, Cody described their relationship as having "settled down vibes" and spoke of how "peaceful" they both feel.

Emma chimed in, "I feel like we're best friends, which to me is so important. I'm close with my family, that is important to me, as well, so we just have a lot in common."

"We're loving where we're at at the moment. And we have fun together. We just love each other's company."

"We talk every day about how happy we are and how lucky we are. I think we definitely appreciate it," Cody added.

"You know, when you meet someone, you just recognise that there's something there. I always saw her as this special person to me."

Cody was then asked what the "best thing" in his life is right now: his relationship with Emma or his swimming career.

"It's a loaded question. Like, swimming is that we do together, it's all wrapped up in one," he said.

While the couple have been dating for several months, Cody admitted it took him almost a year to tell Emma he had a crush on her.

"I always acknowledged that there was a connection that we had. But we didn't act on it until what ended up being a year later," he said.

The couple also addressed rumours of tensions within the swimming team, after they found themselves in a complicated love triangle earlier in the year.

Reports claimed that Kyle Chalmers deliberately bumped Simpson out of World Championship eligibility in the 100m butterfly by opting to contest the event.

However Chalmers, who dated McKeon for several months in 2021, later disputed this saying he had always planned to compete in that event.

"There's obviously been drama in the media,' Cody said, but added that there has been "nothing" going wrong in the "team dynamic".

The gross reason you should steer clear of hotel tap water

You might want to think twice about filling up your glass in your hotel room.

The National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) – a product testing, inspection and certification organisation with headquarters in Michigan, US, has begun to urge tourists not to drink the tap water in hotel rooms. Two years of little-to-no use could have well and truly led to bugs and germs collecting in the stagnant systems.

Jérôme Logie, from the Water Division at NSF, claims that water supplies now pose a real risk to travellers that may not have existed previously.

While Logie was quick to remind people of the importance of staying hydrated, he has warned anyone going abroad to assure their water comes from a safe and reliable source.

“After such an extended period with low to no travel, hotels and their water supplies now pose a significant risk to travellers, something many aren’t aware of,” he explained.

“Water and good hydration are essential, but there is a real risk from potentially lethal bacteria that can thrive in stagnant water, such as in unused hotel pipes.

“Add to that a build-up of germs and varying international standards of filtration, and you can see why travellers must be water-smart to ensure they can enjoy prettier sights than their hotel bathroom.”

To help people avoid illnesses, the NSF has put together a list of top tips for staying safe when drinking water abroad when travelling.

Don’t trust the tap water in your hotel bathroom

No matter how desperate you are for a cool drink of water in the middle of the night, do not resort to drinking from the bathroom tap. Stock up on bottled water from a local supermarket or convenience store.

Hotel plumbing is a potential breeding ground for harmful microorganisms such as E.Coli, as water in unoccupied hotel rooms can remain stagnant in pipes for days, weeks or even months.

Hot = good

Many hotels heat their water to 55 degrees+ to kill any microorganisms that might be present which is why you will often encounter ‘Warning: hot water!’ signs.

In larger resorts and hotel chains, companies have their own corporate standards for water management, and some even have water treatment facilities on-site to ensure quality, travellers are still encouraged to exercise caution.

Say no to tap water at restaurants

It’s not just in your hotel room you need to be wary, but also the hotel restaurant.

To avoid encountering any water woes, play it safe and make simple switches such as asking for bottled drinks rather than a jug of water to accompany a meal.

If it’s cloudy, it’s contaminated

Detecting bacteria in clear water is impossible but never, ever drink cloudy water.

If you are travelling to a remote location where bottled water is not available, certified devices and equipment can be used.

E.g: light strobes can kill bacteria; portable filters can be used to remove heavy metals, as well as bacteria; chlorine pills, although not perfect, can be a convenient way to make drinking water safe.

Image: Getty
