Craig McLachlan's tearful partner takes the stand

Craig McLachlan’s long-term partner has burst into tears in court as she recalled the moment he told her he was accused of sexual harassing his co-workers.

Vanessa Scammell, McLachlan’s partner since 2021, took the stand at the NSW Supreme Court as the second week of the defamation trial begins.

McLachlan is suing Christie Whelan Brown and media outlets ABC and Fairfax for defamation claims made in 2018 over reports of assault, indecent assault, harassment and exposing himself to female cast members of the The Rocky Horror Show during the 2014 production of the musical.

He has continued to deny the allegations as the media outlets defend their claims on the basis of truth.

Ms Scammell told the court that the cast of The Rocky Horror Show were affectionate with each other and would often greet each other with hugs and kisses.

She also said that Ms Whelan Brown would “flick the elastic” on McLachlan’s shorts while making “interesting remarks”.

“She would make references to what was underneath the boxer pants and would flick him with a towel,” Ms Scammell told the court, news.com.au reported.

Ms Scammell also revealed that Ms Whelan Brown would “flick Craig in the groin or backside” and saw her give him a “solid slap to the buttocks” backstage at a show in Melbourne.

McLachlan’s partner was asked about how the pair felt when the accusations came out from ABC and Fairfax noting that he was “devastated, humiliated and destroyed”.

“He was incapable of answering and I was worried about his mental state,” an upset Ms Scammell said.

“He was so damaged that I could barely get a constructive sentence out of him”.

The court heard that the couple only saw each other a week after the allegations broke.

They ran into each other’s arms and fell to the ground where they “didn’t speak for 40 minutes”.

McLachlan had earlier finished giving evidence for the fifth day of the trial where he told the court he sent videos of himself pretending to masturbate to Ms Whelan Brown.

The actors had most recently worked together on the Network Ten television series The Wrong Girl from 2016 to 2017 and would use crude, sexual nicknames such as “gobbler and blumpkin”.

Defence barrister Michael Hodge QC questioned McLachlan if the nicknames prompted him to send the videos.

McLachlan once again said in the video he was pretending to masturbate and wasn’t in the toilet.

He told the court that he would prank and make sexual jokes on the set of the musical like deep throating bananas, masturbating on crew members’ arms and using the nicknames.

Mr Hodge questioned whether he would peel the banana to make it appear as a phallus, to which McLachlan said: “Well the banana is already the appropriate shape, but yes.”

The trial continues.

Image: Nine News (2020)

Paul Keating's shock tirade at Channel 9 during ABC interview

Former prime minister Paul Keating has unleashed a scathing tirade against the shock Nine and Fairfax merger announced yesterday.

Appearing on ABC’s 7.30 on Thursday night, Mr Keating slammed the Nine network’s plans to create a new national media giant, reiterating claims he had made in a statement released earlier on Thursday that Nine had the ethics of an alley cat and its pus will leak into Fairfax.

When asked by host Elle Fanning why he had such a “dim view” of Nine, Mr Keating did not hold back.

“It’s such a low brow outfit,” he said. “I have said chequebook journalism, foot in the door journalism. It’s a low brow show and it always has been, and people who have worked there have been happy to take the money working for a low brow outfit.”

Fmr PM Paul Keating tells #abc730 that Nine is a “low-brow outfit” whose pus will leak into Fairfax. #auspol #FairfaxNine pic.twitter.com/eyPaTIKstR
— abc730 (@abc730) July 26, 2018

“I have fought more television and radio companies than anyone in the business, and my fight - a series of issues I have had with Nine were about one thing and one thing only: Kerry Packer trying to get hold of control of John Fairfax and sons,” he replied.

“Because as Prime Minister I prevented Kerry Packer lifting his share of John Fairfax to 14.9 per cent control.

“Kerry Packer had the Nine Network chase me in private life.

“But I’m a big boy, I know how to punch. People said to me after a whole series of things on 60 Minutes. They said, ‘Mr Keating, are you going to take Mr Packer to court for defamation?’ I said, ‘No, I have more expensive remedies in mind for Mr Packer’.

“That was taking Fairfax from him which I had Brian Haradine (who was in the Senate) do in 1997 to 1998. In other words, I made sure he didn’t allow (John) Howard to get a majority to let Turnbull do what he did today.”

Under the $4.2 billion deal, Nine Entertainment Co. Holdings Limited (Nine) and Fairfax Media Limited (Fairfax) will merge, with the new company to simply be called Nine.

The deal is expected to be completed at the end of the year with the centuries old Fairfax name to disappear.

Rebel Wilson's shock Aussie media ban

Aussie actress Rebel Wilson is in the midst of promoting her new film Pitch Perfect 3 movie in Australia, but one local media outlet has received a ‘blanket ban’ on access to the star.

Fairfax Media, the publisher of Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, has been refused an interview with Wilson, banned from covering the red carpet at the premiere, and staff invitations to attend the film screening have been cancelled.

Fairfax reports that while no official reason for the ban has been given, Wilson is understood to be upset with the company’s CEO Greg Hywood.

Wilson was unhappy that a request she made to the CEO in 2015 was revealed during her defamation trial against Bauer Media.

During the trial, Wilson admitted to lobbying to wipe a 2002 article published by Fairfax in order to keep her age a mystery.

Wilson said she wanted the article removed so emailed Hywood to ask for a favour.

“This man, I was in a business relationship with, and he asked me to reach out if I ever needed anything,” she said of her request to Hywood.

Nobody from Fairfax testified during the trial but they did respond to a court order to supply Wilson’s correspondence with Hywood.

“We are disappointed that Ms Wilson refuses to treat Fairfax journalists professionally,” said a Fairfax Media spokesperson.

“Fairfax responded to a subpoena as part of legal proceedings she commenced. We were compelled by the court to do so.”

In September, Wilson was awarded Australia’s highest ever defamation payout, successfully suing Bauer Media of $4.5 million.

Articles published in Woman’s Day, Australian Women’s Weekly, NW and OK! were found to have wrongly portrayed her as a serial liar who faked her way to Hollywood.

Tonight, Wilson and her Pitch Perfect co-stars will walk the red carpet at the film’s premiere in Sydney.
