Sam Mac's surprising career move after becoming a father of two

Sam Mac has announced a surprising career move after becoming a father of two.

The Sunrise weatherman has released a heartwarming children's picture book titled Suddenly One, inspired by his now two-year-old daughter Margot.

Mac explained on The Morning Show on Tuesday that when Margot turned one, he was inspired by her milestone birthday to write some touching words about his firstborn.

“When Margot turned one, you want to celebrate that and all those little moments that happen in that first year so, I just jotted down some thoughts,” Mac explained to Larry Edmur and Kylie Gillies.

“(I was on a) long flight to Perth … (and) I thought, ‘Oh, maybe this could be a poem’. So, a few days later I refined it and posted it with some video to match the words and it had over a million views overnight."

“It really took me by surprise, and (publishing house) Penguin got in touch and said, ‘We think that this is a universal experience. Everyone gets excited about their little ones and those first milestones. Let’s turn it into a picture book’."

“So, over the past year, we’ve been in the process of picking the illustrator, the wonderful Deb Hudson, and refining the text.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sam Mac (@sammacinsta)

Mac said he hopes the book helped families connect, saying, “(I think it’s) for parents and grandparents to sit down and read it with their little ones.”

“I hope what comes from the book is a great connection point for families. Even if it would be a few years before she could fully understand it," he said.

"This project has been almost a year in the making & it has already brought me immense joy. The thought of grandparents or uncles or friends sharing this book with the little ones in their lives to celebrate their first birthday makes my heart sing!"

Image credits: The Morning Show / Instagram

Matt Shirvington opens up on marriage and fatherhood

Matt Shrivington has opened up about marrying his "first crush" when he tied the knot with his wife in 2001.

The Sunrise host spoke candidly to Sydney Morning Herald about the early days of his relationship with his wife Jessica, sharing how the pair "made it official" when they were just 18 years old.

The 45-year-old reflected on his whirlwind romance, sharing how the couple met at a house party when they were teenagers.

“We went to separate schools but had mutual friends and saw one another often at house parties,” Shirvo said.

The former Olympian said the couple had a “false start” after Jess came down with chickenpox, while he was focused on his athletics career.

“But by the time we’d finished our Higher School Certificate (Year 12, in NSW), we’d made it official. We moved in together aged 18 and started our lives as a couple,” he added.

Jess and Matt married in 2001 and moved to London a year later, after Matt was based in England for his athletics training.

Their family grew in 2006 when they welcomed their first child Sienna, before deciding to return to Australia in 2008.

The couple had a second daughter, Winter, soon after, and went on to have a son, Lincoln, who is six.

Shirvo shared how much he loves raising daughters and getting to see their sense of independence grow.

“They’re great young women, strong and powerful, and I love seeing their desire for independence,” Shirvo said.

“Sienna is extremely artistic and Winnie is ambitious about sport – she just competed in the under-17s National Rowing Championships."

“It doesn’t matter what it is, if your kids have a passion for something and love waking up in the morning to do it, you’ll back it to the end of the earth as a parent.”

On Monday morning's episode of Sunrise, Nat Barr praised the article and Shirvo for his heartwarming words about his family.

“Interesting article in the paper over the weekend about our very own Shirvo — who got candid about life, love, and family,” Barr said, referring to the piece.

“I wanted to give you a shout-out — it was really lovely, I loved reading it.”

“My favourite part was when you said, ‘I never had a celebrity crush growing up, but I did marry my first crush’ It was a really gorgeous story,” Barr said of the piece.

Matt Shirvington reflects on becoming a father

Matt Shirvington has reflected on the moment he knew he was going to become a father, and the "life-changing" decision he had to make about his future.

The Sunrise co-host recalled when his wife Jessica told him she was pregnant 18 years ago with the couple's first child when they were living abroad in London.

The couple then had to decide if they would stay in the UK when their first child was born, or return home to Australia.

Chatting with 7Life, Shirvo said, “We were living in London doing our own thing and we’d always planned to have a family but it was just an amazing surprise.”

“It was a game changer for us because we were living in London and, although we had kind of had family come and go over there, we were away from home.”

Ultimately, Matt and Jess chose to stay in London to welcome their elder daughter, Sienna, and remained there until Jess was expecting their second child.

“Sienna was about two years old and Jess was actually pregnant when we came home and we had our second baby here in Australia,” Shirvo explains.

The proud parents now have three children, Sienna, 17, Winnie, 15 and Lincoln, five.

Acknowledging the age gap with their youngest, Shirvo says it’s a “different dynamic in our family, but a great one”.

Now a seasoned dad celebrating his 17th Father's Day, Shirvo said the arrival of his first child changed his life "completely".

He explained that they went “from being a couple to having someone else in your life that you have to look after”.

“After that it’s kind of like, ‘Well, we’ve done this before we can do it again’... It’s pretty special.”

Reflecting on his years of fatherhood, Shirvo says watching his kids grow up and finding their life passions has been what he loves most.

“I’ve watched my kids grow up and see them have a passion for something and invest themselves and love something so much,” he shares.

“As a parent, you’d do anything to allow them to do it and allow that to blossom."

“That’s the bit that really gets me.”

Crowd goes nuts as man learns he's a dad on the big screen

Image: Youtube

A new dad-to-be has been given the surprise of his life while attending a basketball game – and as far as pregnancy announcements go – this is up there with one of the best we've seen.

The Orlando Magic fan was happily watching the big game with his partner when the ‘kiss cam’ panned across to them during a break.

The man and his partner looked suitably delighted at the attention – but something about the woman's behaviour was not quite right. Almost as though she knew something ELSE was about to happen.

Sure enough, as the camera lingered on the couple, a special message appeared along the bottom of the screen: ‘Congrats James! You are you going to be a dad’.

At first James did not notice the message – but slowly it became apparent that the rest of the crowd certainly had, as the cheering swelled to a giant crescendo.

Then the magic moment arrived: the dad-to-be finally looked a little closer at the big screen, took a second or two to comprehend what he was reading, and was then completely overcome with shock, surprise and pure joy. His reaction will be preserved forever for the young family, and it really was a tremendous one.

Sadly, James’ team lost the game – going down to the Charlotte Hornets 106-99. But there's no question that he went home a happy man regardless, with a story he will be able to share for many years to come.

Prince Harry gushes over baby Archie: “Can’t imagine life” without him

Prince Harry has revealed what life as a father has been like since the arrival of his first-born Archie.

The Duke of Sussex paid a visit to local residents at the Barton Neighbourhood Centre in Oxford, where he said that he can’t imagine a life without his son.

The 34-year-old was met with plenty of well-wishers, all eager to know more about the newborn.

Speaking to Hello!, Mrs Sheikh said that she asked the Prince about his son.

“I asked him how Archie was, and he said he is doing well,” she said. “I asked him if Meghan was well and he said, ‘Yes, she is fine.'”

Others were told of the sleepless nights he was facing from Harry himself.

View this post on Instagram

Today, The Duke of Sussex visited Oxford to highlight the positive work being done in the city for young children, disabled people and the community at large. The Duke started his day meeting young patients at the Oxford Children’s Hospital. In 2016 at the @WellChild Awards, The Duke promised awardee Mikayla Beames he would visit her at hospital. Today, HRH was able to fulfill that promise and spend time with Mikayla and other patients and their families, along with the some of the extraordinary staff and teachers in the Hospital School who are on hand to support the young patients as they continue their studies whilst in hospital. Afterwards, The Duke of Sussex, in celebration of its 30th year, re-opened the OXSRAD Disability Sports and Leisure Centre, a facility first opened by his mother, Diana Princess of Wales in 1989. His Royal Highness felt honoured to pay tribute to her work and meet some of the people his mother met 30 years ago. This centre supports people with disabilities through sport and physical exercise – an area The Duke is particularly passionate about. HRH has seen the transformative effect sports, teamwork and exercise can have on people, not just physically but also for their mental fitness. The Duke’s final stop was at Barton Neighbourhood Centre to see the work of Thrive Teams, an initiative that supports at risk youth with access to education and employment. The Barton Centre includes a cafe, doctor’s office, sports hall, local police centre and food bank. The team there save nearly one tonne of food per day from being wasted and whip up some incredible meals for those that can’t afford to sustain themselves. Serving as a hub for this close-knit community, where 1 in 4 grow up in child poverty, this centre truly is a lifeline for its roughly 5,000 residents, but also an example of what can be achieved when we all come together.

A post shared by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex (@sussexroyal) on May 14, 2019 at 8:23am PDT

When presented with posters from school children, the royal said that he looks forward to reading them at “4 o’clock in the morning” when his son is wide awake.

The Duke also took a trip to Oxford Children’s Hospital and spoke to Amy Scullard, a mother-of-two, who was cradling her 10-week-old daughter.

Presumably looking for advice from someone experienced, Harry had asked if her daughter was over her grumpy period which occurs throughout the first 10 weeks.

“He said he’s getting used to the baby and how Archie has fitted into family life,” said Ms Scullard. “He said he just feels part of the family and he can’t imagine life without his son.”

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was born on May 6.

Guy Pearce opens up about coming to terms with the breakdown of his marriage

Guy Pearce has revealed he was “blindsided” when his 18-year marriage to psychologist Kate Mestitz broke down.

In a deeply personal and candid chat with Andrew Denton on Seven’s Interview on Tuesday night, the 50-year-old actor opened up about how writing songs for his album The Nomad helped him come to terms with the end of his marriage and how his life turned around when he welcomed a son with his new partner Carice Van Houten.

“I’m still, to this day, having little moments where I go, ‘Is it really real?’” Pearce said about being a dad to Monte, who turns 2 in August.

“Is it, like, he really is my child. My heart is definitely there but my head sometimes is still back there.”

Denton noted to Pearce that his album was dedicated to ex-wife Kate and asked: “What happened to your marriage?”

Pearce explained how it was Kate who told him, “Our time’s up” and that “it was incredibly strong of her to do it.”

He added: “She saw something that sort of blindsided me, a little bit, I guess. We were young, we were kids when we met. We were 12 when we met and, on some level, the way she put it, is we were probably still those little kids when we got married, too. So it was a growing apart.”

When Denton pressed if he saw it coming, Pearce honestly responded: “No. No. It was really shocking.”

The couple announced their split in October 2015, with the Australian actor telling fans at the time “Kate and I will always love and support one another and be the best of friends.”

Pearce has since moved on from his split with new partner and fellow actor Van Houten, 41.

He described falling in love six months after his marriage breakdown as coming about in “ramshackle way and before we knew it, we were having a baby.”

Denton prodded: “Were you careful not doing this as the rebound?” with Pearce honestly replying, “I think there were rebound elements to it, but we’re both mature enough to go, ‘Let’s go back and start again, meanwhile we’re having a baby, but let’s just sort of go back and start again and work out the best way to be mature and responsible about this. I’m glad we’re doing that.”

About Van Houten, Pearce said simply, “She’s divine. She’s so sweet and she’s a gorgeous mother.”

Finally a nice quiet stroll out in the world @caricevhouten pic.twitter.com/xQS7fpYvus
— Guy Pearce (@TheGuyPearce) September 21, 2016

When Denton reminded Peace that he had often said in the past that he didn’t want children, he admitted that losing his own father Stuart to a plane accident when he was eight, and then having to help raise Tracy, his sister with an intellectual disability, had coloured his view of fatherhood.

“The fact that I now have a child,” he said, “I’m madly in love with him and it’s sort of changed everything.”

“What are the advantages of being a 50-year-old dad?” Denton asked.

“Patience, and having a better understanding of myself. It’s certainly not going to be about kicking the footy in one years’ time, that’s for sure,” he quipped back.

Prince William: "Fatherhood made me more emotional"

Prince William says that being a father has made him "more emotional" and more prone to welling up.

In an interview with ITV, the 33-year-old father of two-year-old Prince George and eight-month-old Princess Charlotte said becoming a parent has made him more aware of "how precious life is."

"I'm a lot more emotional than I used to be, weirdly. I never used to get too wound up or worried about things," he told a documentary crew.

"But now the smallest little things, you well up a little more, you get affected by the sort of things that happen around the world or whatever a lot more, I think, as a father.

"Just because you realise how precious life is and it puts it all in perspective. The idea of not being around to see your children grow up and stuff like that."

The documentary, When Ant And Dec Met The Prince: 40 Years Of The Prince's Trust, focuses on William's father, Prince Charles, and his youth trust, set up in 1976.

In the documentary, William and his brother Prince Harry praise the "insurmountable amount of duty" in their dad.

It was believed to be the first time Prince Charles' wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, had granted a televised interview.

She told the interviewers: "I'm really proud to be married to somebody who, 40 years ago, aged 27, had the vision to put [the trust] together - I mean, it was an incredible idea then."

"For somebody - he was very young then - to think of it and to think of these very disadvantaged young people who had literally been to hell and back and to find a way to give them a second chance in life ... He cares so much about these young people."

First appeared on Stuff.co.nz.

Related links:

Champagne helps prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s

Spot the panda hidden in this vintage school photo

Watch this mother panda deal with her baby panda who is out way past his bedtime
