"Just So Wrong": Karl's outrage after dad banned from playing footy with son

In what experts are calling “a shock loss for common sense”, a Queensland dad has found himself in hot water for the most egregious of playground crimes: having a wholesome moment with his own child.

Dean, a footy-loving dad from the Sunshine Coast, was left gobsmacked when a casual morning pass around with his “footy mad” son was blown the full-time whistle, by the school's own referees, no less.

“He said, ‘Dad can we just stand over on the grass there and pass a ball to each other,’” Dean explained to Karl Stefanovic on the Today show. And that’s exactly what they did – for all of one or two minutes – before a teacher intervened to declare the unregulated father-son bonding session a health hazard.

“She said, 'It’s not safe to be over here because you’re unsupervised at the moment,'” Dean recounted. “And I said, 'Well, look, I’m supervising my son, so no need to worry about his supervision, consider him supervised.'”

But the staff member was unmoved. According to Dean, the kicker came when she added: “It’s unfair on the other children who don’t have their parents here at the moment to play with them.”

That’s right: fatherly love, now officially a competitive advantage in the playground.

The situation escalated faster than a second-half comeback, with the deputy principal allegedly taking the opportunity to sideline the young player while dad was off stashing a backpack, delivering an impromptu post-match debrief that left the child confused and visibly upset.

“I didn’t understand why he (principal) wouldn’t come speak to me. … I left at that point,” Dean said, still flabbergasted.

The unnamed school has, according to Dean, developed a bit of a reputation for treating physical activity like it’s full-contact cage fighting. “I know that after school they don’t want kids playing sport,” Dean claimed. “I think now the school’s pulled back, they don’t want kids playing on the playground, they don’t want them playing on the oval, on any grass patch. Now they come to the point where you’re not allowed to pass the ball to your dad.”

Next week’s ban: blinking more than three times during recess.

Dean says he and other parents had previously let it all slide, but the idea that adults now require adult supervision while supervising their own children was the final straw.

Enter Today show host and national voice of incredulity, Karl Stefanovic, who gave the incident the full Stefanovic treatment.

“It feel like April Fool’s Day, doesn’t it?” he said. “I mean, it’s just so wrong, a father can’t kick a footy with his son or his daughter, it’s crazy stuff, mate.”

And the final punchline?

“We did reach out to the school and we got told we couldn’t kick the footy with them either,” Karl added, with a smirk that echoed around the nation.

While the school has yet to make a public comment, one can only hope the next school newsletter doesn’t come with a warning: “No running. No fun. Supervision mandatory, even for supervising.”

In the meantime, Dean remains undefeated in backyard one-on-one, and his son still just wants to have a kick with Dad. Is that really so dangerous?

Images: Today show

“She doesn’t know where she is anymore": Robbie Williams shares sad update on his mother

Pop icon Robbie Williams has revealed the devastating toll dementia has taken on his family, sharing that his beloved mother no longer recognises him.

The Angels singer, 51, made the emotional admission during a recent performance in Germany, telling fans that his mother Janet's condition has now progressed to the point where she doesn’t know who, or where, she is.

“My mother has dementia and she doesn’t know who I am anymore,” he said quietly. “She doesn’t know where she is anymore.”

Williams, who rose to fame with Take That before becoming one of the UK’s biggest solo artists, went on to detail the mounting challenges his family is facing. His father, Peter – also a performer – has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and is no longer able to leave the house.

“He used to sing with me every night on stage,” Robbie recalled. “He would come out, steal the show, be charming… and then wander backstage for a glass of red wine. Now he can’t leave the house.”

He also shared his concern for his mother-in-law, who is currently battling lupus, Parkinson’s and cancer.

“She is the most courageous lady and she is fighting, fighting, fighting,” he said, paying tribute to her strength.

Clearly moved and grappling with the weight of his family’s health battles, Williams told the audience: “It’s a strange place to be, this place we find ourselves, 51 years old. It’s very strange to be the grown-up. I’m not ready for it.”

Robbie has spoken before about his mother’s battle with dementia (an illness that also affected his grandmother) but now, the moment he feared has come: she no longer knows her son.

“I’m in a different part of my life right now,” he reflected.

The deeply personal revelation comes at a time when Robbie is also being recognised for his extraordinary contributions to music and charity. He was recently nominated for a knighthood, an honour that, if approved, will be confirmed by King Charles following recommendations from the honours committee and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

With 15 No.1 albums in the UK – tying The Beatles – and a legacy that includes seven chart-topping singles, 11 Comic Relief appearances, and over £100 million raised for UNICEF through Soccer Aid, Robbie is one of Britain’s most celebrated entertainers.

But in the face of such public recognition, his thoughts remain firmly with his family.

“I think Robbie should be knighted, 100 per cent,” said BBC Radio 2 host Scott Mills. “Let’s not forget, he’s the most decorated Brits winner in history. I think we should celebrate and acknowledge how much joy he has brought.”

For Robbie, however, no accolade can ease the pain of watching those he loves fade before his eyes.

Images: Instagram

Son's sad farewell to beloved Aussie icon

Eileen “Red” Bond, beloved Australian socialite and devoted matriarch, has been farewelled in a moving service at Fremantle’s St Patrick’s Basilica, remembered for her unwavering commitment to “faith, family, friends and fun”.

Hundreds gathered on Monday to pay their respects to the former wife of entrepreneur Alan Bond, who died on July 2 aged 87 following a stroke. The service celebrated a woman who brought colour, warmth and strength to the lives of those around her.

Delivering the eulogy, son John Bond described his mother’s deep Catholic faith and love of St Patrick’s as a guiding force through life’s darkest moments – none more painful than the loss of her daughter, Susanne.

“This place gave her strength to get through the tough times in life, of which she had a few,” he said. “In times like these, this church was her refuge.”

Known affectionately as “Red” for her bright red hair as a child, Ms Bond was remembered as a fiercely loyal mother and a friend to many.

“To mum, family could do no wrong even when we obviously had,” John said with affection. “She would brook no criticism whatsoever of family members.”

Her generosity and openness touched people from all walks of life. “She had an incredible knack of befriending anybody, at any time, in any circumstances,” John said. “She was vitally interested in people’s lives, and I think that was the key.”

Eileen met Alan Bond as a teenager and he converted to Catholicism to marry her. The couple went on to raise four children – John, Craig, Susanne and Jody – and built a life of both privilege and public scrutiny. Through her husband’s spectacular business highs and painful lows (including bankruptcy and prison) Ms Bond remained a steadfast and loyal presence.

“She never really changed,” John said. “Wonderful, exuberant, engaging and loyal to the end, she will be terribly missed.”

Bond University, founded by Alan Bond in 1987, also paid tribute to Ms Bond. Vice chancellor and president Tim Brailsford remembered her as a “great friend and fierce supporter” of the university.

“The room was always brighter once Red had entered,” he said. “Her cheeky sense of humour entertained many a crowd.”

Though she lived a life that spanned continents and social circles, those closest to Eileen Bond said her truest joys came from home – her faith, her children, and the love she carried for all who knew her.

Images: 96FM

Royal family shares sweet Father’s Day moment with Prince William

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have delighted royal fans by sharing a heartwarming Father’s Day tribute to their “Papa”, Prince William.

The post, shared on the official social media pages of the Prince and Princess of Wales, features two joyful photos captioned “before and after” – showing the children first hugging their father, and then in a playful heap on top of him.

“Happy Father’s Day, Papa (before and after!) We love you! G, C & L,” the message read.

The candid images were captured earlier this year in Norfolk by photographer Josh Shinner, who also took Prince Louis’s birthday portraits. One photo shows Prince William, dressed casually in a green jumper and jeans, with his arms around George, 11, and Charlotte, 10, as Louis, seven, beams in front. The second picture captures a fun moment with the family bundled together, lying on grass dotted with daffodils.

Happy Father’s Day, Papa (before and after!) Last year, Prince William shared a nostalgic snap of himself playing football with King Charles in 1984, while this year Buckingham Palace posted touching images of Prince Philip with a young King Charles, and the Queen with her father on her wedding day.

To all Dads everywhere, we wish you a happy Father’s Day today. pic.twitter.com/pqIK97NqlW

— The Royal Family (@RoyalFamily) June 15, 2025

The message from Buckingham Palace echoed the warm sentiment: “To all Dads everywhere, we wish you a happy Father’s Day today.”

Images: X (Formerly Twitter)

Another shows Jones on one knee as the couple gazes into each other’s eyes.

Their love story has been unfolding publicly and joyfully. Just months before their engagement, the couple celebrated another major milestone – buying their first home together. “We bought Dennis & Raymond a home,” they joked in an Instagram post from July, featuring happy snaps of the pair holding up their new keys. Sitting on the floor of their new living room with pizza boxes and champagne, the couple looked ready to take on the next stage of life.

Now, with a baby on the way, that next stage has truly arrived – and it seems the growing family couldn’t be happier.

Images: Instagram

"Love every minute of it’: heartbroken sister’s plea at vigil for Pheobe Bishop

The Bundaberg community grieved together on Monday evening as they mourned the loss of 17-year-old Pheobe Bishop, a bright young life believed to have been tragically cut short.

Hundreds gathered in Buss Park for a solemn vigil, the second in as many days, to honour the teenager whose suspected remains were found in dense scrubland near Gin Gin late last week – more than three weeks after she vanished.

At the vigil, Pheobe’s older sister Kaylea delivered a tearful message that left many in the crowd wiping their eyes.

“I want to tell everybody, as much as your siblings p*** you off and grind your gears – because God, they know how to do that – don’t take them for granted,” she said. “Love every minute of it.”

Choking back tears, she added: “I would pay a million dollars to have her walk through the door and punch me on the arm. Don’t take it for granted. Just cherish it. Love the good and the bad. Worship it all. Capture the memories.”

The vigil brought together community leaders, friends, family and strangers united by shared sorrow. Music chosen by Pheobe’s family played in the background as people placed candles, flowers and handwritten messages into glass jars.

Mayor Helen Blackburn spoke on behalf of the city, reminding those gathered that the vigil was not just about mourning a young life lost, but celebrating how Pheobe had lived.

“Her passing has left a silence we all feel deeply,” she said. “But in the midst of this sorrow, something beautiful has happened – we’ve come together, paused our busy lives, set aside our differences and stood side by side.”

Pheobe’s mother, Kylie Johnson, spoke about the transformative role programs like the Y School and MAD Camp played in her daughter’s life. Both programs aim to support vulnerable teens by creating safe spaces and offering holistic, trauma-informed support. “She found purpose in those places,” Johnson said. “She would be proud that she got to travel the world without even leaving Australia. She’d be blown away by that support.”

The memorial marked three-and-a-half weeks since Pheobe disappeared on her way to Bundaberg Airport, where she had been preparing to fly to Western Australia to visit her boyfriend on May 15. She never checked in for her flight, and a police search followed.

On Friday afternoon, police discovered human remains believed to be hers in thick bushland within the Good Night Scrub National Park, about 50km west of Bundaberg. Formal identification has not yet been confirmed, and police say a complex forensic process is underway to determine the cause of death.

Her phone and luggage remain missing.

Two of Pheobe’s housemates, James Wood, 34, and Tanika Bromley, 33, have been charged with murder and two counts of interfering with a corpse. Investigations are ongoing.

As the community waits for answers, the vigils have become a quiet act of collective remembrance, and a reminder, as Kaylea said, to never take the ones we love for granted.

Images: 7 News / Facebook

Since then, Harry and Meghan have been selective in sharing images of their children, making these birthday snapshots especially meaningful for fans around the world.

Last December, the couple released a Christmas card featuring both of their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Though the siblings' faces were turned away from the camera, it was the first time since 2021 that a family photo of the four had been shared publicly.

Earlier this year, Meghan revealed on her Confessions of a Female Founder podcast that she had suffered a serious health scare following Lilibet’s birth: postpartum preeclampsia, a rare and potentially life-threatening condition. Reflecting on that time, she said, “The world doesn’t know what’s happening quietly. And in the quiet, you’re still trying to show up for people ... mostly for your children, but those things are huge medical scares.”

Images: Instagram

"Truly blessed" Irwins celebrate 33 years of love, legacy and wildlife

Australia’s beloved wildlife family is celebrating a milestone today, with Terri Irwin marking 33 years since she married the late Steve Irwin – the larger-than-life Crocodile Hunter who captured hearts across the globe.

On June 4, 1992, Steve and Terri tied the knot in Terri’s grandmother’s church in Oregon. That day, Terri says, was the beginning of her “happily ever after”.

Now, more than three decades on – and nearly 20 years since Steve’s tragic passing – the Irwin family continues to live and thrive in his memory, sharing love, adventure and a deep dedication to wildlife conservation.

Terri took to Instagram to honour her wedding anniversary, sharing a heartfelt tribute to Steve. “Today, 33 years ago, Steve and I were married in my grandmother’s church in Oregon,” she wrote. “And it was the first day of my happily ever after.”

While she admits she still wishes Steve were here, Terri said she wakes each day “with beautiful memories, so much love in my heart, and the promise of continuing his incredible legacy. “We miss her every day": Arrest made in 30-year cold case breakthrough

In a major breakthrough in a decades-old missing persons case, a 64-year-old man has been charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder in connection with the disappearance of Illawarra mother Pauline Sowry, last seen in 1993.

Sowry, also known by her married name Pauline Lawrence, was 49 years old when she vanished from the northern suburbs of Wollongong in December 1993. Despite an unconfirmed sighting in 1994, a 2008 coronial inquest concluded she had likely died. Her case was reopened in 2022 under Strike Force Anthea, leading to Thursday’s arrest at a unit on Murphy's Avenue in Gwynneville.

Police allege the man charged had a connection to Ms Sowry. He has also been charged with concealing a serious indictable offence.

“The reason for his arrest is specifically in relation to the suspected disappearance of Pauline,” Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar said during a press conference. “This is a significant development, and we wanted to tell the public as soon as possible.”

Assistant Commissioner Cassar declined to provide details about what led to the arrest but confirmed that investigations would continue “until we can locate Pauline”.

Earlier this year, police and the Sowry family announced a $500,000 reward for information leading to a conviction. While the reward has not yet been paid, Cassar acknowledged it acted as a catalyst for new leads in the case.

One such lead included the discovery of clothing in bushland in Wollongong’s south, uncovered during a search nine months ago. The garments are still undergoing forensic examination, and authorities have not confirmed if they belonged to Ms Sowry.

“We’ll continue to analyse that clothing and any additional items recovered from today’s search warrant,” Cassar added.

Ms Sowry had recently separated from her husband at the time of her disappearance. He has since been ruled out as a person of interest. Her son, Jason Lawrence, welcomed the news of the arrest in a statement released Thursday.

“We have waited more than 30 years to hear today’s news,” he said. “We miss her every day, and her disappearance has taken a huge toll on myself and our entire family. We thank the police officers for never giving up hope and we look forward to the outcome of this investigation.”

Assistant Commissioner Cassar acknowledged the emotional weight of the developments, calling it a “bittersweet time” for the family.

The investigation remains active as police continue to search for answers and work towards justice for Pauline Sowry.

Images: NSW Police

Missing mum of two found after 60 years

In a stunning breakthrough to one of America's longest-running cold cases, a woman who disappeared more than 60 years ago has been found alive and well – living in another state and expressing “no regrets” for leaving her past behind.

Audrey Backeberg was just 20 years old when she vanished on July 7, 1962, from her home in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, where she lived with her husband, Ronald Backeberg, and their two young children. Her sudden disappearance launched a decades-long search that ultimately went cold – until now.

In a press release issued Thursday, the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Ms Backeberg had been located alive following a renewed investigation into her case earlier this year.

“Through diligent investigative work, which included a thorough re-evaluation of all case files and evidence, combined with reinterviewing witnesses and uncovering new insights, the Sheriff’s Office is now able to report that Audrey Backeberg is alive and well,” the department announced.

The cold case was reassigned in March to Detective Isaac Hanson, who led the breakthrough investigation. His review included interviews with old witnesses, analysis of historical evidence, and a key lead involving a relative’s Ancestry.com profile.

“That was pretty key,” Hanson told WISN, describing how the online genealogy database helped him trace public records that eventually led to a current address. Once the address was identified, Hanson contacted the local sheriff’s department in the area. “Ten minutes later, she called me,” he said.

In a 45-minute phone conversation with Detective Hanson, Ms Backeberg confirmed her identity and shared that she left her family to escape what she described as an abusive and dangerous home environment.

“She sounded happy. Confident in her decision. No regrets,” Hanson said.

Just days before her disappearance in 1962, Ms Backeberg had filed a criminal complaint alleging that her husband had beaten her severely and threatened her life. Despite this, the couple remained in the home together, with their children.

On the day she vanished, Audrey reportedly left to collect a paycheck from her job at a woollen mill – but never returned. Rumours and conflicting accounts emerged over the years, including claims from a 14-year-old babysitter who said she saw Ms Backeberg hitchhike to Madison and take a bus to Indiana. Later, the same individual, when re-interviewed as an adult, claimed Audrey may have ingested pills before departing and might have connected with local construction workers.

For decades, her family believed Audrey would never willingly abandon her children. Her husband reportedly spent years chasing leads, but no trace of her was ever found – until now.

While authorities have not disclosed the state where Ms Backeberg currently resides, Detective Hanson said she had been living safely and independently all these years.

“She just moved on from things and led her life,” he said.

Authorities have closed the case with the confirmation that Audrey Backeberg left of her own volition and was not in danger at any point during the six decades she was missing.

Images: Wisconsin Police

Prince Louis turns 7, loses teeth, gains fans

The Prince and Princess of Wales have released a new video of their youngest son, Prince Louis, in celebration of his 7th birthday – and fans were quick to notice one majestic omission!

The young royal, known for upstaging grown adults with nothing but facial expressions and unfiltered energy, beamed into the camera with a grin so wide it could be measured in acres – revealing a spectacular dental vacancy.

Yes, Prince Louis is now officially a member of the exclusive “Missing Front Teeth Club”, joining generations of British children, Jack-o'-lanterns and occasionally stressed-out rugby players.

The video, taken behind the scenes of a photoshoot with photographer Josh Shinner, captures the birthday boy mid-adventure, clad in jeans, a jumper and brown boots – aka, "British Boy Chic". In a moment of cinematic glory, Louis approaches the camera like a pint-sized action hero, then flashes his now-iconic toothless grin.

But it wasn’t just his smile that had viewers grinning: it was his voice.

“I can jump down from there!” Louis proclaims, boldly sizing up a log that looked suspiciously like it had auditioned for a Bear Grylls special. He then executes the leap, presumably sticking the landing, though the palace has yet to confirm whether a royal stunt double was involved.

This rare vocal cameo marks only the second time the public has heard Prince Louis speak. The first was in 2020, when he interrogated naturalist Sir David Attenborough with a hard-hitting question: “What animal do you like?” (Attenborough's answer: monkeys – though many suspect he now ranks Louis higher.)

Royal fans rejoiced at the annual tradition of birthday content, with one commenting, “He’s growing up so fast — and shrinking his dental real estate just as quickly!”

The official photo was released with the caption: “Wishing Prince Louis a very Happy 7th Birthday!” Though some believe it should have added, “...and a speedy return of those front teeth”.

At press time, Buckingham insiders declined to comment on whether the Tooth Fairy was knighted in a private ceremony earlier this week.

📽️🎞️ Seven today! pic.twitter.com/n3lNIXesCR

— The Prince and Princess of Wales (@KensingtonRoyal) April 23, 2025

Images: X (Formerly Twitter) / Josh Sinner
