Diving deeper into generosity: Cave diver's charitable gift shines a light on giving back

Josh lives in Adelaide and is an avid cave diver, loves writing funny books about science, and spends a lot of time reading and studying online. He recently chose to include a gift to Lifeline Australia when writing his Will online with Safewill.

“It was an incredibly easy decision to make,” says Josh. “As soon as I saw it was possible to allocate a portion of my estate as a charitable donation, I thought it was a perfect idea, and when Lifeline popped up as a recommended charity, I remembered the times when friends and family had so desperately needed their support - it was as easy as clicking the Lifeline logo.”

For a lot of people, writing a Will can feel confronting and daunting. Josh explains how he approached it.

“I had been putting off doing my Will for a while now and had brought home Will packs previously thinking I'd get to it eventually. COVID-19 triggered fear in many people around me, and I've had several close calls with diving accidents over the last few years, so I figured it was long overdue. It turned out to be much easier than expected - I already had a sense of what I wanted to happen when I pass away, so filling it out online concisely made the whole process remarkably quick and painless.

“For me, a Will is less about enforcing my wishes and more about making things easier for the folks I leave behind. Instead of having loved ones wonder or argue over what I would have wanted, I've laid it all down in clear terms. They might still disagree with different elements of my Will when it's executed, but the important thing is that I don't cause additional grief by leaving ambiguous directions.”

Josh was previously unaware that he could leave gifts to charity in his Will. “I certainly didn't think it was an option,” he says. “Until Safewill asked if I wanted to allocate a portion of my estate to charity, I'd never really given it much thought and figured I'd never have enough to make it worth mentioning. I knew how much donations are appreciated, I'd just never connected the dots to realise that what I leave behind could also go towards helping organisations I value.”

Josh shares what he’d say if someone was considering leaving a gift to Lifeline in their Will.

“They’ll be helping a much wider range of people than if they simply gave everything to their partner or family. As important as our loved ones are, we're ultimately all on the same team when it comes to humanity, so why not support those in need regardless of if you know them or not?”

By leaving a gift in his Will to Lifeline, Josh wants to help create a world for people who might be struggling where they can get the support they need when they need it. “We all struggle in different ways, but for many just getting up and surviving the day can be the hardest part. We're incredibly lucky to have an organisation like Lifeline that is there for anyone to reach out to and get support whenever they need it.”

Lifeline Australia is a national charity providing people in Australia experiencing emotional distress with access to 24-hour crisis support and suicide prevention services. Lifeline exists to ensure that no person in Australia has to face their darkest moments alone.

Lifeline has partnered with Safewill to offer you the opportunity to write your Will online for free this Include a Charity Week, which runs from the 4th – 10th September and is dedicated to raising awareness of how anyone can make a lasting impact to causes that they care about through a gift in their Will. Your Will will be reviewed by their affiliate law firm, Safewill Legal, to ensure it has been filled out correctly, and comes with a year of free and unlimited updates.

While making a Will online may not be for everyone, particularly those with complex estates, thousands more Australians have been able to write a Will within the comfort of their own home in just 20 minutes.

Safewill's online Will-writing service allows you to appoint guardians for your children, set out how you want to divide your estate and leave gifts to charities that mean the most to you - like Lifeline.

After you've provided for those closest to you, leaving a gift to Lifeline is a lasting and meaningful way that you can have an impact for years to come. Even 1% of your estate can help save lives and prevent suicides in future generations.

If you would like to learn more, please do not hesitate to get in touch with Lifeline Australia’s Gifts in Wills Specialist Abi Steiner via email at GiftsInWills@lifeline.org.au or phone on 1800 800 768.

Images: Supplied.

This is a sponsored article written in partnership with Lifeline Australia.

Restaurant staff blown away by enormous tip left by generous customer

A group of restaurant workers was left shocked and amazed when a regular diner left them a hefty tip, then disappeared before they could say thank you.

The employees at Eggs Up Grill in South Carolina, USA, said this particular diner always tips well and has been generous even during the pandemic.

But they were certainly not expecting his generosity after a meal.

After dining at the restaurant, the man left an envelope containing the tip for his $10 meal (AUD $13).

Inside was a note, and over $2,000 cash (AUD $2,575), which he wrote should be split among all the staff working.

"The gentleman that left the tip is a regular who comes in at least 6 days a week," Eggs Up Grill Managing Partner Adam Bair told Fox News via email.

"The gentleman paid for his $10 meal and left the envelope with the money and the note without waiting around for his server to open the envelope. We tried to catch him in the parking lot to thank him, but he had already left."

The note revealed four servers at the restaurant received $400 (AUD $515), with the rest of the cash split between other staff based on the hours worked.

While staff considered him a generous customer, no one was expecting the enormous tip he had left.

"It was very surprising. It made a huge impact on all of us above the monetary value," Bair wrote.

"It made the servers feel appreciated during a very turbulent time with COVID. Their tips have gone down tremendously and I know the money was very much needed. It was perfect timing."

The tip was allegedly left as part of the 'Just Be Nice Challenge' which encourages diners to leave large tips for their servers.

Now, staff are keen to see the man again to say thank you.

Waitress Selene Montalvo told WYFF4: "He paid most of my bills this month, and that's why I can't wait to see him to really thank him."

Terminally ill Perth father “overwhelmed” by strangers’ generosity to bring him home

A terminally ill Perth father stuck in Bali could be returning home to Australia this week after strangers rallied around him to bring him home.

Last year, Duncan Turner suffered a serious head injury, causing a blood clot on the brain followed by multiple strokes and seizures.

After months of rehabilitation, Turner learnt how to walk and talk again, however, the injury caused permanent damage – meaning he sadly just has months to live.

The 46-year-old father and his wife, Michelle Edgar, decided to take a holiday to create some lasting family memories with their five-year-old daughter Amelie.

While they were in Singapore, Turner injured his knee after tripping over.

"When we were in Singapore he had a fall," Michelle said.

"With his bloods being how they are, his leg was extremely bad."

Duncan and his family ended up stranded in Bali without travel insurance, but in just three days, strangers have donated $23,000 to the sick father.

“It’s just so heart-warming,” Michelle told 9NEWS.

“These are happy tears, not sad tears this time.”

The donations are enough for Turner to return to Perth on a medevac flight.

Turner is now waiting for doctors to give him approval to fly back home, however, he expects it will happen within the next day.

“It’s very overwhelming, very emotional, but in the absolutely most positive way possible,” Michelle said.

“I cannot be more grateful.”

“A big thank you and lots of hugs,” Turner added.

The family went to Bali to fulfil their daughter’s dream to swim with dolphins.

Michelle said she was unsure if she regrets the trip.

“That’s a really hard one because you wouldn’t want to take those memories away at the same time,” she said.

“She does have those memories and those photos of all the good times and that’s what she’s going to remember and that’s priceless.”

Mum's touching Kmart Christmas gift idea goes viral

A generous mum’s thoughtful Christmas gift idea has gone viral for the most beautiful reason. Posting to the Kmart Mums Australia Facebook group, the mum shared photos of the hampers she put together for those in need with items purchased from Kmart.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have a great year,” she wrote. “Instead of buying ridiculous amounts of presents that no one really needs, as a family we’ve decided to go into the city Christmas Eve to hand out these gift bags to the less fortunate.”

The care packages contain clothes, toiletries, food, a pillow and a sleeping mat.

Over 10,000 members of the Facebook page liked or reacted to the mum’s post, praising her generosity. “How beautiful!” one person commented. “The world needs more people like you in it!”

Another wrote, “As someone who works in this sector, can I please thank you for your generosity towards those less fortunate.”

However, others expressed concern about the inclusion of wine in the gift packs.

“Fantastic thing to do BUT if that is real wine that's not a good idea,” one said. “When I did packs up recently they insisted that anything that had alcohol content not be put in the pack."

“Technically you aren’t allowed to drink in public unless it’s in a specific area,” explained another. “They can get in to trouble. I’d swap it for maybe a bottle of flavoured mineral water.”

Either way, there’s going to be some very surprised (and very happy) disadvantaged people out there this Christmas. What a great idea!

Elderly stranger pays for man’s groceries

An elderly gentleman in the US has paid for a young man’s groceries after the two struck up a conversation about race relations in the troubled country.

African American comedian Sampson McCormick shared the beautiful story, which has since gone viral, on Facebook along with a selfie with his new friend.

“I was at the grocery store today and this old, white man (Mr. Samuel) walked up to me in line, apologized for racism & police brutality in this country and paid for my groceries,” McCormick wrote. “He handed me the receipt, gave me a fist bump and said ‘Black Lives Do Matter.’”

“Just a random moment of solidarity and love that made my day,” he added.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, McCormick said the man’s act of generosity blew him away. “It’s really important for us to come together and, however we can, extend acts of love toward one another because we really do need more love in the world.”

“Love does exist in the world,” he said.

Related links:

9-year-old spends pocket money to buy books for prisoners

Supermarket worker’s random act of kindness goes viral

Primary school sports team help elderly man move firewood

9-year-old spends pocket money to buy books for prisoners
