Nine-year-old Aussie ballet prodigy scores full New York scholarship

A talented nine-year-old is heading to New York City, after scoring a full scholarship to a prestigious ballet school.

Malcolm Doyle's dad Nick said he and his wife knew their son had a talent for dance from a young age, and could not be more proud of the international attention his dancing has garnered.

"He's been doing really well here in Australia and since last year, there's been a bit of a focus from overseas," Nick told Today.

"He got brought in to do an audition for Chicago's A and A Ballet, who were doing a world broadcast for auditions and from there, we just started to get a bit of interest."

"And then this year, we let him do the auditions for the Royal Ballet and he ended up in Hong Kong over Easter."

From there, Nick said the American Ballet Theatre in New York got in contact and offered Malcolm a scholarship.

Malcolm ultimately turned down the offer and signed with another NYC school, the Ellison Theatre, who offered the youngster a full ride.

The family are currently saving up to buy flights over to the US to check out the school, with Nick saying they will do anything and everything to support their son's dream.

"It's taking quite a bit of the funds out of my bank account, but the love he's got for dancing, you can't stop him and even if we wanted to, I mean we get home after he's had a full day of dance and he's still dancing around the house," Nick said.

Malcolm's dad has a performing arts background and his mum is also a classically trained ballerina and teacher, so Nick said Malcolm was either going to inherit the genes or "end up having three left feet".

"He went and saw a production by the Queensland Ballet on the weekend, which he had never seen before and he walked out with half the choreography memorised in his head and trying to reproduce it.," Nick said.

After being dubbed "Australia's own Billy Elliot", the Today hosts asked Malcom what it is he loves so much about dancing.

"It makes me feel really excited and it's so amazing for me, the feeling I get when I dance," Malcolm said.

Kochie’s emotional farewell on Sunrise

Sunrise host David Koch bid an emotional farewell to the show in his final episode on Friday morning.

After 21 years on the job and hosting over 5,300 episodes, Kochie received a hero’s welcome when he entered the studio at 7am that morning.

The veteran host teared up as co-host Natalie Barr, newsreader Edwina Bartholomew and sports presenter Mark Beretta greeted him at the desk.

“Thank you for everything. Thank you. Oh dear. Quick, I’ve got to [read] the news,” Koch said, while he wiped away his tears.

Not long after, Kochie confessed that he was distracted by the text messages sent by Nine’s Today Show host, Karl Stefanovic and shared their banter.

“I asked him if he had a Sportsbet booked on me crying on the show, and he said, ‘No, my missus closed my account last year when I bet on the camel races in Dubai,’” he said.

To which co-host Nat Barr quipped: “Well, as we walked in, you were already crying, so someone won some money.”

Later on in the show, former co-host Sam Armytage, who left the show in 2021, made a surprise guest appearance and shared her well-wishes for Kochie.

“This job is so incredibly difficult, and you can’t say it when you’re in the job, because no one wants to hear you complaining. But when you’re not in the job anymore, you can say how hard this is,” she said.

Armytage recalled her own experiences of working at the breakfast TV show before commending Kochie for his resilience and drive.

“There is so much scrutiny. To get up day after day and do this: the resilience, the drive, the ability, the energy to just keep coming in here every day and do that is extraordinary.

“I absolutely salute you. After eight years, I couldn’t do it anymore. 21 I just think it’s extraordinary.”

Both Kochie and Barr sat on the sofa across from Armytage, and her appearance comes days after Kochie addressed the rumours of a feud between him and Armytage.

Mel Doyle, who was Kochie’s co-host from 2002-2013 also made a surprise appearance and shared stories about their humble beginnings.

“Remember when we bet our boss to take us to lunch if we hit 40,000 viewers?” she asked about the program’s early days. Kochie added that when their show first began their office was “a demountable in the car park.”

Kochie and Barr also sat down for an emotional final interview where they reminisced the highlights of his career.

“Really, thanks for everything,” Barr told Kochie, while tearing up.

Images: Channel Seven/ Sunrise

Melissa Doyle draws inspiration from powerful survival tales in her new book

Like millions of people around the world, Melissa Doyle's life was thrown in to disarray when the pandemic hit in March 2020.

While being between jobs, stuck at home, and feeling like an empty nester after her eldest child left for university overseas, Melissa found herself at what she describes as "a loose end".

While reflecting on her decades-long career and the countless inspirational stories she had heard along the way, she decided to start writing her first book, titled 15 Seconds of Brave.

"I wasn't quite sure what to do so I wrote a book about eight different people who have been through extraordinary experiences, some of them pretty harrowing," she told Today Extra.

"Some of these stories I'd held in my hand for many, many years until the time was right to do something with them and this just felt right."

Doyle revealed the intricate detail she went into to ensure she did the stories justice, with some of the interviews even taking one whole year to properly unravel.

From a child bride who was abducted and turned into a soldier, to people who have battled inner demons and substance abuse, Doyle revisited each one with respect and dignity.

"We had to go really gently, a lot of these people I have interviewed previously and I have a habit of keeping in touch with them," she said.

"I can't sit down and get them to tell the most traumatic experience of their life and walk away - I check in."

15 Seconds of Brave is available now at all good bookstores.

“I needed to say it”: Ian Thorpe opens up about coming out

Ian Thorpe has opened up about the moment he first decided to speak out about his sexuality during an interview with English television presenter Sir Michael Parkinson, and how he wished had come out earlier.

The former Olympic swimmer spoke about the 2014 interview during Sunday night’s episode of This Is Your Life, telling host Melissa Doyle he was “comfortable” coming out at that moment.

“I was always doing this interview with Sir Michael Parkinson. I had just come out to my family and to my very, very closest friends,” the 39-year-old said.

“I had spent some time with [Sir Michael Parksinson] before the interview and told him, ‘You should ask me if I’m gay because I’m going to tell you I am’.”

Thorpe added that it was the first time he felt he could put himself “out there” and be his “authentic self”.

“I needed to say it,” he continued. “It was the first time I felt I was comfortable enough to put myself out there. It was important to be my authentic self.”

During the 2014 interview, he said: “I’ve thought about this for a long time. I’m not straight. And this is only something that very recently – in the past two weeks – I’ve been comfortable telling the closest people around me exactly that.”

Referring to the first time he was asked about his sexuality at 16 years of age, Thorpe said he didn’t know at that stage but “was still gay at the end of the day”.

“Yes I lied about it,” he said. “I’m comfortable saying I’m a gay man.”

The then-31-year-old also spoke about his fears of letting his friends, family and the country down by being open about his sexuality.

“Part of me didn’t know if Australia wanted its champion to be gay. But I’m telling the world that I am,” he said, adding that the support of his family and friends made him wish he’d come out sooner.

Image: Twitter

Melissa Doyle's big comeback

Former Sunrise host Melissa Doyle has surprised fans with news she’s returning to Channel 7 as the new host of an iconic show.

After being axed in 2020 amid Covid-19 budget cuts, she is heading back to her former network of 25 years and has been named host of the revival of This Is Your Life.

The news comes after Doyle’s brief stint at rival network Channel 9 earlier this year, during which she presented docuseries Australia Behind Bars.

“I am honoured to continue the legacy of such an iconic program as This Is Your Life,” Doyle said in a statement.

“I can’t wait to present the Big Red Book to some of our most loved Australians and together celebrate their remarkable lives and the people and moments which mean so much to them – and to all of us.”

This Is Your Life tells the life story of a prominent figure each episode and was adapted from an American format that was first presented on radio in 1948. It was brought to Australian screens in 1975.

The program lasted just four episodes back in 2011 with Eddie McGuire as host on Channel 9, but Seven bosses are confident the revamped format will see success.

“We can’t wait to bring the format into 2022 and to welcome Mel Doyle back to Seven as its host. Mel is one of the best in the business. Intelligent, warm and engaging, she is the perfect person to present This Is Your Life and to celebrate the careers and achievements of some extraordinary Australians.”

The 52-year-old host of smoothfm Weekend Mornings first joined Seven in 1995 and memorably hosted Sunrise alongside David Koch for 11 years until 2013.

Image: Getty

"Bloody hard": Mel Doyle's surprising confession

Beloved former Sunrise host Melissa Doyle has gotten surprisingly candid in a new podcast called And We're Rolling with Stephanie Hunt.

Doyle spoke about how difficult it was to juggle filming breakfast television while still supporting her family as a new mother.

“What was it like when you were juggling work and babies and not getting much sleep?” asked Stephanie.

“It was bloody hard,” Doyle said.

“You know, I won’t lie and maybe that’s why I do want to check in with others because I wish I’d probably had a bit more.

“You know Kochie (David Koch) was fantastic. We're doing Sunrise together and he was a dad of four and was very aware to a degree of some of the things I was going through.

“I started at Sunrise when Nick was six-months-old, I just finished maternity leave. And then I had Talia while I was doing the program I only took a few weeks off to have her and then I came back and we had to go on the road every Friday for the first month of me coming back.

“Our wonderful boss at the time thought that it would be great to take the show around the country. And you know, I’ve got a three-week-old baby at home and I was still breastfeeding and everything still hurts, and everything was still leaking.

It was just, it was really, really hard.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Melissa Doyle (@melissadoyleofficial)

She's since reflected on her time on the show, saying that she wish she had "the guts to say no at the time".

"But obviously I didn’t. And you think you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. But now I look back and I probably should have said no. But it was really, it was hard," Doyle said.

“I’d get up at two o’clock in the morning and feed her and then go to work and do the job and get home. And it meant that while my kids were in primary school, I could pick them up every day while they were toddlers, I could spend the day with them.

“I always remind myself that it was my choice to do it. But I do feel very much that you know, as a as a mum in that newsroom, 20 years ago, you know, I’m not saying I was the first by any means, but there wasn’t too many other mums around.

“Let’s be honest, it can be quite a competitive industry, so sometimes the last thing you ever want to do is admit a weakness or a chink in the armour. You just you become this stoic person that says, ‘I’ll keep on doing it, I’ll find a way I’ll manage’, which is dumb, really, but I don’t know what how I would have done it differently.”

She said that her routine at the time was "gruelling".

“But I do know for probably a good decade of my life, it was just, you get up early, go to work, you come home, you do your home job, you get up and you go into your paid job, and you come back into your home job and I wouldn’t swap it for anything.

“But it was really gruelling. So I feel for any mum who is trying to juggle the two that sometimes we don’t actually have enough compassion and tenderness and support.”

Melissa Doyle says goodbye to Channel 7 after 25 years

It’s been a huge year for shock TV exits: Big names such as Natarsha Belling, Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Emma Alberici and Sally Obermeder have all publicly lost their on-air roles.

But the most surprising of all has been Channel 7 veteran Melissa Doyle.

Doyle has been forced to say goodbye after 25 years with the network.

Hosting The Latest, the role was perfect for Doyle, with a quarter of a century experience under her belt, she was reassuring and the friendly figure viewers needed during these unprecedented times.

Speaking to Stellar magazine, Doyle opens up about getting the “really sad” news that her time at Seven had come to an end.

“I wouldn’t say it came as a total shock, I just felt really sad,” Doyle tells Stellar.

“Look, I would be lying if I didn’t say I would’ve loved if they could have found something [for me], but it’s the market, it’s the year,” she says.

“I don’t necessarily think it’s a personal thing. I don’t think they thought, ‘Oh, gee, we’ve got to get rid of Mel.’ I think they thought, ‘Well, we need to save money and we’ve got this person and she’s not doing a huge amount. We’re not quite sure what we’re going to do with her.’ And that’s just the way it is.”

And as Doyle sees it, her family - husband of 25 years John Dunlop and children Nick, 19, and Talia, 16 - are some of the lucky ones.

“We have a lot of friends who are out of work and there are so many in the wider community who have lost their jobs. There are so many who are worse off. I feel really lucky that we are the age we are and that our kids are the age they are. I also have the comfort of knowing that I could probably do a bunch of different things to earn an income.”

The familiar face said: “I let myself have one day when I wallowed on the couch and had a gin and tonic a little earlier than I should have,” she admits.

Doyle released a statement about parting ways with the network back in August.

“For 25 years, I have called Channel 7 home,” she said in a statement. “I’ve had the privilege to share stories that mattered, meet incredible people and be there for significant moments in history.”

“I am incredibly proud of the work I have done and appreciative of the trust and warmth our viewers have shown me. I want to thank the consummate professionals I have worked with along the way, in particular our Chairman Kerry Stokes for his constant support. I leave Seven with a great deal of pride, satisfaction and gratitude.”

On Twitter, Doyle said: “Every ending is a beginning and I’m excited for what comes next.”

As for what that may be, Doyle isn’t too sure yet – she tells Stellar she’s still feeling “exhausted” after 25 years at Seven and enjoying a slower pace.

“Kochie is genuinely concerned”: Sunrise co-anchor fears the worst

While David Koch has unquestionably been one of the most constant and successful faces on Australian breakfast TV for almost 20 years, new reports from Woman's Day suggest he may be worried about his future at Seven.

The doubts come with good reason for the 64-year-old co-anchor, as one “network favourite” is said to be sizing up his highly coveted role.

It’s believed 36-year-old Weekend Sunrise host Matt Doran is the front-runner to step into Kochie’s position should the decision arise to fine-tune the long-running morning show.

“Matt is the heir apparent, for sure!” says a Seven insider, “He cannot put a foot wrong in that place and offers a more smooth feel to the network.”

Insiders went on to report to Woman's Day that Kochie is also “extremely rattled” by the recent surprise departure of former co-host Melissa Doyle, who departed the network after 25 years.

“He would be feeling nervous about his situation, now that he can see how cutthroat the industry has become and how Mel left, despite being one of the longest standing and most senior presenters at the network,” says the source.

Soon after, Seven reported that it had sold most of its stake in Money Makeover, Kochie’s online financial business – a joint venture in which they were formally equal partners.

Add to that the chaos caused by the regular absence of co-host Samantha Armytage this year, who took time off in 2020 with health issues in March, then again to be a support to her parents in their own health battles, and it’s easy to see why Kochie could be feeling unsettled.

“Kochie is genuinely concerned that the loyal Sunrise audience is straying, and he's frustrated because there's been no continuity in who partners alongside him these past months,” the source continues.

If Armytage follows Doyle’s lead and also decides not to return in 2021, it will be the end of the long-standing Armytage-Koch duo, which could spell disaster for David.

Image: Sunrise
