Today show star and veteran doctor dies at age 69

A veteran doctor and regular guest on the Today show Dr Ric Gordon has passed away at the age of 69 from pancreatic cancer.

Known for sharing his expertise as an obstetrician and fertility specialist, Dr Gordon became a household name after he delivered the first baby on Australian television.

Upon hearing of his death, veteran radio host and beloved Australian author Wendy Harmer revealed Dr Gordon delivered both her babies even after she and her partner dropped out of IVF.

In a post on X, she wrote, “He was a pioneer in IVF in Australia and gave hope to so many... and was kind and caring professional. Vale.”

Nine News confirmed the “sad news” of Dr Gordon’s passing from pancreatic cancer on Saturday, as presenter Georgie Gardner said “he will be deeply missed”.

Professionally known as Dr Ric Porter, he had previously hosted Nine’s long-running lifestyle hit Good Medicine, which ran for nine years in the 1990s.

Dr Gordon was a part of the team of doctors who delivered the first IVF birth in NSW in 1983, and during his career, he delivered more than 5000 babies, including in 2003 when he safely delivered a baby live on the Today show.

Reflecting on the moment in 2022, Dr Gordon told Today viewers it was an extraordinary moment in television.

“It went so well, it was a great morning and a good outcome,” he said. “The baby cried when it was meant to cry, mum and dad were happy."

The well-known doctor also drew some controversy over his career, including an offensive analogy where he used the Holocaust to explain weight loss on the same breakfast TV program in 2015.

Despite apologising for saying “there were no overweight people in the concentration camps”, his apology was dismissed by many for being “insufficient” and “unsatisfactory”.

Dr Gordon said at the time, “I’m very sorry it upset those people. It was never my intention.”

He added that he had “done a lot of study” on the Holocaust and his comments were merely “used as a medical example”.

Dr Ash Gordon's heartbroken parents have spoken out about the moment they found out their son had died.

The Melbourne GP was allegedly killed after confronting two teenage boys who had allegedly broken into his home in Doncaster in the early hours on Saturday, January 13.

Dr Gordon’s grieving mother Catherine, recalled the moment she was woken by the phone call no parent wants to receive.

“He said that Ashley had gone. And I said gone where? He’s gone. He’s no longer with us,” Mrs Gordon told A Current Affair about the moment her son's housemate delivered the devastating news.

“I said, ‘Don’t lie, you’re joking.‘ And I hung up on him."

Holding back tears, Mrs Gordon also shared the denial she went through as she received the call from a detective.

"Then the detective rang and I told him that I didn’t believe him, and he said 'how can I get you to believe?', I said 'until there is a police person in uniform in front of me, it's not happening'"

"Well you don't want to believe do you?" A Current Affair host Ally Langdon replied, and both parents shook their heads.

“We saw the police car coming up, and I just prayed to God they’d just keep going. I didn’t want them to turn into the driveway, but unfortunately, it happened.”

Ally Langdon who was brought to tears during the interview added: “It’s a cruel contrast isn’t it? That Ash has dedicated his life to saving lives, yet his was taken in this horrible way."

The 33-year-old doctor was found by police less than a kilometre from his home, but unfortunately he died at the scene.

In the days following the incident, two 16-year-old boys with Dr Gordon’s murder as well as aggravated burglary and theft.

Dr Gordon's family have since held a memorial service for him to honour the slain doctor.

Image: A Current Affair

Major update in fatal stabbing of young Melbourne doctor

The 16-year-old accused of stabbing a young Melbourne doctor to death had allegedly committed a similar crime just months prior.

The teenager was allegedly involved in the home invasion of Dr Ash Gordon, which turned fatal after the doctor chased the intruders from his home, ending when Dr Gordon was stabbed and left for dead.

As the teens now face charges for his death, an alleged previous victim of the same teenager has come forward, claiming the young man left him with serious head injuries after robbing his house in October.

His alleged previous victims claim that the Victorian government has “blood on its hands” and that the boy should not have been released on bail.

The victims told the Herald Sun that Dr Gordon's death has left them traumatised and struggling to move on from their own terrifying encounter.

In an emotional statement, the alleged previous victims pleaded with Victorian premier Jacinta Allan to reconsider the state's planned youth justice reform.

“We are trying to move on with our lives, however, when a case on (alleged) teen crime is reported, we feel anxious, helpless and frustrated with the broken system," they told the publication.

“The Allan government and the justice system have blood on their hands, and ultimately should be held accountable.”

Under the terms of the 16-year-old’s bail, he was to adhere to a strict nightly curfew, but still managed to allegedly break into Dr Gordon's home shortly before 5:30am on January 13th.

Ms Allan has faced increasing pressure to abandon Victoria's overhaul of the youth justice system which would see the age of criminal responsibility raised.

The government has committed to raising the age that a child can be arrested, jailed or charged from 10 to 12 by the end of 2024, and again to 14 by 2027, with serious crimes such as homicide being exempt from these changes.

Ms Allen however has insisted that the reforms are a key priority of her government and that they will help prevent future criminal activity.

“There’s a huge amount of work that’s being undertaken by Victoria Police to work with those young people ... [and] that sort of prevention-based activity is the best way to address future youth crime,” she said.

“At the same time, when offences are made, Victoria Police have the tools and resources to deal with those.”

You never want to have to bury your own children."

Ms Gordon said her little brother had “a big personality with a large heart”, sharing how “his presence was known everywhere.”

“He had a cheeky grin, a charm and charisma about him that had everyone wrapped around his little finger.”

“He was the absolute apple of all of our eyes. "So painful": Gordon Ramsay overwhelmed by MasterChef tribute

The late Jock Zonfrillo has been remembered in a heartfelt tribute from friends, fellow chefs, and TV personalities on a special episode of The Sunday Project.

The likes of Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre White represented the culinary world as they honoured their late friend, with the former moved to tears while opening up about the “good times” they’d shared together - both on and off the Masterchef Australia set.

“Spending time on the floor with Jock in MasterChef was electrifying,” he shared, “but it was always something quite encouraging about the s**t we’d gone through to get to where we’d been.

“Plus it was an incredible stage that you’re on with MasterChef Australia. It’s the most-watched MasterChef anywhere on the planet, so it’s a privilege.

“And being present in that room, welcoming Jock to the platform, was just one of those experiences I’ll never forget.”

“Being in the [Masterchef] environment sort of took us back 20 years,” he added, “there’s something quite amazing about two Scotts coming together in Australia, it makes you happy, at the end of the day you feel good.”

“The ripples have been devastating,” Ramsay revealed. “No-one’s gonna get over this quickly.

“If there’s one thing that we’ve done as chefs, we’ve united. And we’re talking about the good times, so.”

It was then that the world-renowned chef had to pause, overcome with emotion, before he managed to share, “it’s just so painful.”

And when it came to Zonfrillo’s enduring legacy, Ramsay noted that his late friend and fellow Scot was “never done as a chef, he still had years to go.”

“His legacy’s gonna be that kilt,” he added, tears in his eyes, “and just what he stood for.”

The ripples of Jock Zonfrillo’s death will be felt throughout the culinary world, said Gordon Ramsay. pic.twitter.com/87QEjpN8FT

— The Project (@theprojecttv) May 7, 2023

Chef Marco Pierre White had similar sentiments in mind when it was his turn to speak about their friend, sharing his belief that “Jock Zonfrillo will never die. He will live on through everyone he touched.

“He lives within it, us, and everybody who watches that show, a little piece of him will be still in there. That‘s the truth.”

It was a statement that rang true with fans and supporters of both Zonfrillo and the show, with many taking to social media in response to the tribute, sharing their grief and sympathy for all who’d known and loved him.

“Heart wrenching,” one said. “I will watch this series one day but not now I just can’t. A lovely tribute”.

“Rest in peace Jock , you will be remembered as a legend forever,” one wrote.

“Beautiful tribute to Jock tonight. Like so many others I felt like I lost a friend despite never having met him. Hope his beautiful family find some solace over time in everyone's words about their experience with this remarkable man,” shared another. “Vale Jock Zonfrillo.”

Image: The Project / Ten

Murderer and Eric Clapton drummer dies at 77

Jim Gordon, an infamous session drummer from the ‘60s and ‘70s, has passed away at the age of 77.

Gordon, who in his prime played with the likes of the Beach Boys and George Harrison, died in a psychiatric prison in California’s Vacaville. He had been sentenced to 16 years to life after killing his mother during a psychotic episode in 1983, and it is reported that he never attended parole hearings, or ever left prison.

His publicist Bob Merlis confirmed the news in a statement, where he also explained that Gordon had died of natural causes.

Gordon was born and raised in Los Angeles, and opted to pursue a career as a drummer while a teenager, even turning down a scholarship to UCLA. At just 17, he toured the United Kingdom with the Everly Brothers.

His professional resume only grew from there, with Gordon going on to become on the primary drummers for George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. Additionally, he contributed to songs by The Beach Boys on Pet Sounds, Cher, Nancy Sinatra, Judy Collins, and Bobby Darin.

In 1970, he formed a group - Derek and the Dominos - with Eric Clapton. Together they wrote the hit ‘Layla’, with Gordon playing both piano and drums. Gordon’s girlfriend at the time, Rita singer Coolidge, claimed she had written the piano section.

Gordon’s relationship with Coolidge ended when he physically assaulted her.

As the years went by, Gordon developed issues with addiction, telling Rolling Stone in 1985 that he considered himself to be an alcoholic, and admitted to using heroin. By the late ‘70s, after he had confessed to hearing voices in his head, his mother had requested he seek help.

“He used to talk to me about hearing voices,” Bobby Whitlock informed Rolling Stone in 2013, “but I told him that it was his consciousness speaking to him. He said it was someone else. Evidently he never stopped or even lightened up on his drug and alcohol intake.

“The end result was the destruction of his family.”

As Gordon’s mental health deteriorated, so did his career. He claimed to often hear his mum’s voice, and despite a number of medical interventions, he never maintained a consistent treatment schedule.

And in June 1983, his mother paid the price, when Gordon fatally struck the 71-year-old Osa Marie Gordon with a hammer and knife.

In the wake of her murder, Gordon was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and sentenced to his 16-years-to-life in prison. In 2018, he was deemed to still pose “an unreasonable risk of threat to public safety.”

However, those who had known and worked with Gordon before the dark period of his life wanted to pay tribute to the late drummer, taking to social media to write of his professional success, citing some of his greatest hits and collaboration.

Gordon’s publicist, Eric Alper, did so while confirming the news, adding that he “will be missed.”

Jim Gordon, one of rock’s all-time greatest drummers, has died at the age of 77.
Not only did he play in the Wrecking Crew, but also with Derek and the Dominos, Joe Cocker, Gordon Lightfoot, Merle Haggard, Joan Baez, Tom Petty, and hundreds of others, and will be missed. pic.twitter.com/m3jP5LKaqB

— Eric Alper 🎧 (@ThatEricAlper) March 15, 2023

Eric Clapton’s ex-wife - Pattie Boyd - to whom he was married 10 years, paid her respects with a throwback picture of Gordon at a drum kit, writing that she was “sorry to hear of the passing of Jim Gordon.”

I'm sorry to hear of the passing of Jim Gordon. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial at 40 – a deep meditation on loneliness, and Spielberg’s most exhilarating film

40 years ago this month saw the release of Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial – a film about a stranded alien, the boy called Elliott who discovers it and a bond of friendship that remains as magical and heartbreaking as it did back in 1982.

We think of Spielberg movies today as thrilling roller-coaster rides, full of sharks, dinosaurs and swashbuckling archaeologists. Yet for me, E.T. remains Spielberg’s most exhilarating work: a deep meditation on loneliness, friendship and growing up in small-town America.

Aided by John Williams’s Oscar-winning score and Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore’s touching performances, E.T. feels both of its time and for all time. As Spielberg once said:

I think that E.T. is for the people we are, the people we have been and the people we want to be again.

A child in need of a friend

After the breathless trio of Jaws (1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Spielberg wanted to make a more intimate film about his isolated childhood in suburban Arizona as he came to terms with the divorce of his parents.

At the same time, he had commissioned a script about a suburban family terrorised by a group of aliens with one befriending the family’s son. The DNA of both stories would make their way into this film.

Like Spielberg, Elliott is a loner. He’s not playing sport, or going out with girls or getting into trouble. He is introverted and thoughtful. And in need of company.

One of Spielberg’s great underrated talents is his direction of children. Many of his films feature young children at their centre – think The BFG (2016), A.I. (2001) and War Horse (2011).

In E.T., Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore as brother and sister Elliott and Gertie bring credibility and pathos to their roles, fitting seamlessly into the southern Californian ‘burb culture recreated so fondly by the director.

Spielberg’s grasp of childlike wonder is everywhere: notice how he shoots from the children’s eye level and shows adults only from the waist down.

For the first time in his career, Spielberg rejected storyboards and shot scenes chronologically, allowing Thomas and Barrymore time and space to improvise. The domestic and school scenes (hiding E.T. from the mother, tempting it into the house with Reese’s Pieces, freeing frogs destined for dissection) all feel more real because of this.

And what of our alien?

Before E.T., Hollywood saw aliens as hostile critters intent on planetary carnage. The recent extra-terrestrials in Alien (1979) and The Thing (1982) had caused havoc and trauma.

E.T. is different: partly modelled on the facial features of Albert Einstein, it is inquisitive, thoughtful, funny. In the delightful Halloween scene, Elliott throws a white sheet over it as a disguise, and E.T. suddenly spots a child dressed up as Yoda, excitedly repeating “Home! Home!”.

From this moment, Hollywood realised the marketing potential of “cute aliens”; whether Ewoks, Grogu or Toy Story’s “Little Green Men”. It is small wonder that Variety praised E.T. as the “best Disney film Disney never made”.

The alien plays another role too: it fills the void of the absent father.

Paternal lack and the strains it places on families is a familiar trope in Spielberg’s films, from Jurassic Park (1993) to Catch Me If You Can (2002) to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989).

All we know is that Elliott’s father is “in Mexico, with Sally”: left behind is a stressed mother and bickering siblings.

Some contend that E.T. is a modern-day fairy tale or a Christian parable. For others, it is an illustration of “Reaganite entertainment”, upholding the sanctity of the nuclear family but distrustful of bureaucratic interference and governmental surveillance.

Spielberg at his best

E.T. earned US$800 million at the box office. Adjusted for inflation, four decades on, that is still the fourth highest grossing movie ever.

For some naysayers, its success was further evidence of the special effects-laden, high-concept spectacle film that was beginning to reign in mainstream film culture. But I think E.T. is much more than that: it is a movie with a heart. The special effects are minimal. What counts is the story, and the boy and his friend.

Spielberg’s films are to this day criticised as mawkish and overly sentimental, deliberately engineered to cynically manipulate our emotions. Not so in E.T.: the pleasure is genuine and the tears are earned.

E.T. became a pop culture phenomenon. The shot of Elliott and E.T. on a bike, flying across the moon, remains an iconic image. “Phone home” has become part of our lexicon. Its message of peaceful coexistence between creatures from different worlds today seems more appropriate than ever.

Aliens stranded on earth are a staple of contemporary cinema, from Under the Skin (2013) to The Iron Giant (1999). And Netflix’s current global hit Stranger Things contains a treasure trove of E.T.’s visual references.

Spielberg may have made bigger, louder films, and more historically profound ones, but E.T. endures as his best.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Image: Shutterstock

Gordon Ramsay makes piping hot profit on seaside mansion

The foul-mouthed celebrity chef has flipped his Cornwall mansion for £7.5 million ($AUD 13 million), earning him the title of this year’s most expensive sale in the area.

Gordon Ramsay famously spent much of 2020 in the Cornwall home, which made appearances as the backdrop for his clips on Instagram.

According to property records, he went on to sell the six-bedroom, four-bathroom home for the princely sum in 2021, as reported by Cornwall Live.

It also seems to have served him a tidy profit, after he initially spent £4 million ($7 million) on the property - resulting in a cool $6 million in his pocket, per Domain.

Ramsay’s Cornwall home has made several appearances on his social media accounts, including clips with his daughter Tilly Ramsay. Gordon Ramsy praises pandemic for closing “bad” restaurants

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has been caught stirring the pot again. This time, saying that a silver lining of the Covid-19 pandemic has been the forced closure of many bad restaurants taking up space in prime locations.

“The crap’s gone,” Ramsay told UK magazine Radio Times in a recent interview.

“Just sh**holes in a prime position and taking advantage because they’re in a great location, and they’ve got the footfall [have closed].

“But now we’ve wiped the slate clean, which is good.”

In the interview, the Hell’s Kitchen host, known for being fiery in the kitchen, admitted the last two years of the pandemic have been “devastating” for the hospitality sector in Britain. He said the industry “was on its arse, but it’s getting better”.

“It’s been devastating the last two years. Landlords don’t say, ‘Take a holiday for two years.’ But I think what has been evident for all of us is the crap’s gone.”

Last year, the restaurateur himself estimated his eateries in England lost more than $100 million in the first year of the pandemic due to loss of business during lengthy UK lockdowns.

“I get criticised for being wealthy, but the responsibility on my shoulders – the livelihoods at stake – is huge,” Ramsay told The Sun at the time.

“I do feel under pressure to give my younger members of staff, especially, some hope, and the sense that we can get out of this. There have been so many tears, people at their wits’ end.”

At the start of the pandemic in April 2020, more than 1.5 million hospitality workers in the UK were furloughed. It accounted for a quarter of all furloughed staff across Britain.

Last year in the week leading up to Christmas, as the Omicron variant ripped through the UK, pubs, bars and restaurants each lost on average $18,000 in what should have been the busiest trading week of the year.

In the recent interview with Radio Times, the 55-year-old said throughout the pandemic, restaurants have had to “raise their game” to stay alive.

He said that it has meant a positive outcome of the last two years is that customers are getting better quality from eateries.

“Customers have got so much smarter in the last two years,” he said.

“They know a lot more about food than they ever have done and have been making their own sourdough, so it’s taught everyone [in the restaurant industry] to raise their game.

“It’s wiped the arrogance from the industry.”

Ramsay takes over Jamie Oliver’s ‘failure’. Gordon recently took advantage of a business closing himself, when he took over a location formerly owned by fellow celebrity chef Jamie Oliver in Liverpool, England.

“It’s sad that Jamie didn’t make it here – the site is amazing”.

“It was never my intention to take over Jamie’s Italian. Jamie and I are mates everyone thinks we’re not, but we are. Two summers ago we sat in the garden with our kids and had an amazing evening talking, drinking, laughing, crying and just having a proper heart-to-heart.

“It had nothing to do with it being his old site. Whether it was Marco Pierre White or Jamie Oliver, it didn’t matter who had the house beforehand. The location was absolutely spot on.

“Where Jamie failed, there’s a big learning curve for all of us. One man’s failure is the next man’s success.”

The site is the new home to Ramsay’s 35th restaurant – the Liverpool Bread Street Kitchen & Bar.

Image: Getty

“He’s not a cowboy, he’s an actor”: Jane Campion hits back at Sam Elliott

Director Jane Campion has called out actor Sam Elliott after he criticised her film The Power of the Dog.

Campion called Elliott “a little bit sexist” and a “b****” a week after he slammed her film for being filmed in New Zealand and its theme of repressed homosexuality, claiming she didn’t know anything about the American West.

The New Zealand director responded to Elliott’s criticism over the weekend while speaking at the Directors Guild of America awards in Los Angeles.

“I’m sorry, he was being a little bit of a B-I-T-C-H. I’m sorry to say it but he’s not a cowboy, he’s an actor. The West is a mythic space and there’s a lot of room on the range. I think it’s a little bit sexist,” she said.

Jane Campion responds to Sam Elliott's #ThePowerOfTheDog comments: "I'm sorry, he was being a little bit of a B-I-T-C-H. I think he thinks of me as a woman or something lesser first.”

Elliott initially shared his views during an interview on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast several weeks ago, when asked what he thought about the movie.

“They made it look like those dancers, those guys in New York who wear bow ties and not much else,” he said.
“That’s what all these f***ing cowboys in the movie look like. They’re all running around in chaps and no shirts. There’s all these allusions to homosexuality throughout the movie.”

When Maron responded with, “I think that’s what the movie’s about”, referencing how it’s heavily implied Benedict Cumberbatch’s character is a repressed gay man, Elliott claimed Campion was out of her depth making a Western.

“She’s a brilliant director, by the way, I love her … previous work - but what the f*** does this woman from down there, New Zealand, know about the American West?” Elliott said.

“And why in the f*** does she shoot this movie in New Zealand and call it Montana and say, ‘This is the way it was’. That f***ing rubbed me the wrong way pal.

“The myth is that they were these macho men out there with the cattle. I just come from f***ing Texas where I was hanging out with families, not men, families, big, long, extended, multiple-generation families.”

The Power of the Dog, a Western psychological drama, has been nominated for 12 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, which has made Campion the first woman to be nominated for best director twice.

Image: Getty Images
