“Hypocrite”: Hughesy's on-air clash with Greens leader

Dave “Hughesy” Hughes had a fiery debate with Australian Greens Leader Adam Bandt about veganism on-air on The Fox’s Fifi, Fev & Nick.

Before Bandt appeared on the show, a clip played of Hughesy, who is a vegan, calling for the leader to "quit the party" after learning the Greens leader wasn't a vegan.

He questioned how Bandt could advocate for climate action without adopting a plant-based lifestyle, and the Greens leader was brought onto the show to explain his stance.

“So you are not a vegan?” Hughesy asked the politician.

“I’m not….” replied Bandt. “I applaud those who are, I applaud those who have made the shift. I’ve been thinking about it …”

Hughesy then loudly interjected “ … URGH, THINKING ABOUT IT?”

The Greens leader replied: “I don’t have a good drop-dead reason, but I’ve been thinking about it, and I can probably give you three justifications for it.

"Firstly, we’ve made big changes at home and basically only eat meat for special occasions, the rest of the time we’re vegan or vegetarian at home.”

“…. THERE’S ONE WAY, ADAM, THERE’S ONE WAY …” the presenter yelled in response.

Hughesy's co-star Fev then tried to make light of the situation and asked him: “What are you doing Dave?"

"Adam is doing the version of Leonardo DiCaprio and his private jet flying around the world while banging on about climate change, but you flew to Brisbane on the weekend,” he continued suggesting that Hughesy too was being a hypocrite by getting on a flight recently.

“But I don’t bang on about it,” exclaimed Hughesy.

“Adam is the leader of the Greens … it’s hypocritical! C’mon, you can do it, Adam, you can become a vegan! Be the change you want to see in the world, buddy!”

Hughesy adopted the vegan lifestyle for his own health, but he has previously revealed that it comes with its challenges and his family were also not that enthusiastic about the change.

Image: news.com.au/ Fifi, Fev & Nick

Hughesy's damning tirade over the Logies

Dave Hughes has launched into a damning rant live on air over the annual Logie awards, saying he was disappointed to not be invited to this year's ceremony.

Hughesy has hosted and presented the opening monologue of the Logies several times in past years, but even that wasn't enough to score him an invite to the 2024 awards that happened on Sunday.

The comedian and radio and TV regular appeared on The Fox’s Fifi, Fev & Nick on Tuesday, where he launched into a tirade over being snubbed at the event.

“I’ve enjoyed doing the Logies in the past … and look, I wasn’t invited on Sunday night. So, I was just at home, yeah,” Hughes explained.

“So you don’t even get invited if you’re a past host? I thought there’d be a table for you,” host Nick Cody asked.

“I hosted it four times in a row and no invite. No invite! Not even an invite!” responded Hughes, before jokingly shouting: “The amount of losers in that room! I presented for 20 years in a row and didn’t even get an invite.”

Brendan Fevola pointed out, “You’ve got no shows on TV though, why would you get invited?”

“Mate, I pop up on things. I pop up on things! I’m a pop-up guy!” Hughes hit back.

Hughesy's Logies snub comes just two weeks after his radio show was abruptly axed, with breakfast show hosts Hughes, Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan sharing a statement about their sudden departure from 2DayFM.

"We've loved our time together on 2DayFM Breakfast, however, due to some of our families living in different cities we are unable to commit to 2025, so with a heavy heart we are moving aside so 2DayFM can find the team to take them forward in Breakfast," the co-hosts said.

"We are so grateful to Sydney for their support, and to double the number of listeners in three years is something we are immensely proud of, and we will miss each and every one of them."

Image credits: Channel Nine / Instagram

Hughesy spills the beans on major shows set to be axed

Dave Hughes has shared his prediction that The Masked Singer is die to be axed from Network Ten's lineup this year as the network continues to battle dwindling ratings.

The host of the show made the admission on his radio show on Tuesday, saying he hadn't been given any updates on when filming was due to commence.

“We’ve been waiting on a production schedule. That production schedule has not come through, so as far as I know, The Masked Singer won’t be filmed this year for Channel 10,” Hughes said on his show Hughesy, Ed and Erin on 2DayFM.

“We’ve had such a great time over those years, it’s been such a fun show to be on, so many great singers have been on,” he continued. “We’ve had great panels. We started with Jackie O, Dannii Minogue, [Lindsay] Lohan, then Urzila Carlson came in, we’ve got Abbie Chatfield, Chrissy Swan, Mel B. All stars in their own right."

“It’s a tough one for the production team.”

Later during the radio show, Hughesy and the team called Osher Günsberg to question whether The Bachelor was facing the same grim fate as The Masked Singer.

“I tell you what, I haven’t cancelled our trip to Fiji, which is in the middle of the shooting window we normally have [for The Bachelor],” Günsberg, who has been host of the dating show since 2013, said.

Osher went on to criticise Australian TV for putting British and American shows on prime time, rather than favouring homegrown talent.

“I personally feel we really need to value our own stories, and our culture, and our own voices far more highly,” he said. “And we’ve got to do what we need to do to make that happen on our screens."

“If we’re not going to sing our own songs and tell our own stories – we’re just going to be this weird echo of the US and the UK, and that’s not going to work out well for us.”

Last year's season of The Bachelor premiered to the franchise’s lowest ratings in its decade-long history, while personalities involved with The Masked Singer have repeatedly said "it is a very expensive show to produce".

Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes has held back tears as he shared the heartbreaking details of his mum's health battle live on his radio show.

Speaking candidly on 2Day FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin, Hughesy shared that it had been a "tough few weeks" for his family as his mum, Carmel, was nearing the end of her life.

“My mum’s unwell, and the family have gathered around her, and we’re celebrating her life,” Hughesy told co-hosts Erin Molan and Ed Kavalee.

“She’s still with us, but it won’t be long. She’s a beautiful woman who’s been a great matriarch of the family, and we’re all around her at the moment.”

While holding back tears, Hughesy then revealed that “she’s asleep now and she probably won’t wake up again”.

He explained the family had been “going through photos” recently in celebration of Carmel’s life.

“Mum grew up in an orphanage, and there’s a photo of her teaching a class with nuns looking over her … She had to leave the orphanage because she didn’t want to be a teacher, so she left with nothing and went and became a nurse, and met Dad.”

Reflecting on his mother’s legacy during the segment on Friday, Hughesy told his co-hosts: “She’s been a beautiful mother, who really supports her children.”

He went on: “Everyone goes through [losing their parents] … but the memories of all the sacrifice, and all the good times … She’s done so well in her life. We’ll miss her a lot.

“She’s always been stoic and never complained.”

Despite the difficult time Hughesy and his family are going through, the comedian was still able to smile and laugh as he reflected on his mum's sense of humour that she has kept "until the end".

“We were around and didn’t think she could even speak again, and one of the nurses was lifting her and said, ‘I’m sorry if I drop you’, and Mum just whispered, ‘it doesn't matter now’, and made the nurse laugh.”

“So she was still coming out with zingers … she’s a beautiful woman.”

Kate Langbroek reveals real reason she parted ways with Hughesy

Kate Langbroek has caused a stir during an appearance on The Project, revealing the truth about why she and Hughesy went their separate ways, with a hefty pay gap hanging between them.

The 57-year-old TV presenter was there to discuss gender pay gaps with her fellow panellists when she decided the time had come to share her own experience, admitting that she had earned a staggering 40% less than her co-host David Hughes on their shared radio show.

“It’s unusual because in showbiz it’s not a standard situation, but Hughesy and I did a radio show together for 18 years,” she began, referencing their 2001-2019 Hughesy & Kate show.

“[We] had never, ever discussed what we got paid,” she explained. “And then the second last job we did together, it turned out he was getting paid 40% more than I was.”

Kate went on to note that in show business, if someone has a higher profile they’re likely to be getting more, but that crucially “this was the Hughesy & Kate show that we had made together.

“Like, it didn’t exist without Hughesy and Kate.”

She spoke next of how the discovery had changed their relationship, and how she had then left him.

“So then the show ended?” co-panellist Waleed Aly sought to confirm.

“It’s a really hard thing to do,” Kate said, “who’s going to talk about money?

“It’s just not the Australian way. And yet it’s true that women - because we are the ‘breeders’ … we do that, and we take time out of our [careers].”

Sarah Harris, another of the show’s panellists, spoke up then to expand on that, explaining how “often we are drawn to part-time and casual work because we want to make it work with our families.”

She then shared how she’d been doing her taxes the previous night, and how the “deductions for what helped you with your job” brought her thoughts to childcare, and how she “would have loved to [have] put childcare down” but couldn’t, as “you can’t claim it on tax”.

“Until we get those sorts of things worked out,” she said, “I don’t think we’re going to get that close in pay.”

Kate took over again from there, sharing how she believed it was about “much more than just equal pay”, and how she “thought it was illegal to pay someone differently depending on whether they’re male or female. It’s just so nuanced.”

“I think what people don’t understand with the gender pay gap,” Waleed contributed, “is [that] they think it’s people being paid unequally for the same work. And that is part of it, but it’s actually a relatively small part of it, a lot of it has to do with career progression for women being halted because they have babies, things like that.”

Kate, agreeing, chimed in again with a final note to say that “because we’re lovers and nurturers … we’re like, kind of punished for that, at the other end of our working lives as well.”

Images: The Project / Ten

How Hughesy turned $100,000 into a dollar

Dave Hughes has opened up about an ill-fated financial investment that saw him lose a six-figure.

The comedian told the Hit Network’s Carrie & Tommy that he sold his share in a business venture, which cost him $100,000, for just a dollar.

“I once invested in a bar and my share – I mean, I’m going to be unrelatable here to some people – my share cost $100,000,” Hughes said on Monday.

Hughes explained that the nightclub, which was in an up-and-coming part of town, did not align with his lifestyle. “I was trying to leverage my profile to make the bar happen, but also I wanted to get joy out of it,” the 48-year-old said.

“I don’t drink and I had a wife at the time … I invested $100,000 for my share and I sold that share for $1.”

The failed foray into the hospitality industry is not Hughes’ only misadventure. In 2017, Hughes bought a five-bedroom house in Elsternwick, Melbourne for $3 million, only to find out later that the bank valued the property at “much less”.

He told Triple M’s Hot Breakfast in January last year that “it took a while” before he could find a tenant for the property, which was renovated by Josh Barker and Elyse Knowles on The Block. “I had trouble renting it,” he said.

“At one point the real estate agent rang me and said, ‘someone wants to move in but they’ve got a dog’. I felt like saying, ‘I don’t care whether they’ve got a meth lab’.”

It was later reported that Hughes found a renter who paid $2,500 to $3,000 per week for the place.

Dave Hughes’ wife confronts him on TV over marriage issues

When Dave Hughes brought his wife Holly on stage on his popular TV show Hughesy, We Have a Problem, we’re betting he wasn’t expecting to be called out for his own problems.

At the beginning of the episode, Hughesy explained, “foreplay has become a little bit not as romantic as it should be and I’m blaming her.”

“She looked me up and down and I thought she was perusing how sexy I was,” he said, recalling a recent night in bed.

“She had a look in her eye and I thought, ‘she wants me so much, she can’t handle it.’ And she looked at me and said, ‘have you put the bins out?’”

Pointing at his body, Hughesy added, “You cannot look this up and down and be reminded of a task that you don’t particularly like doing that is a bit stinky!”

The comedian’s partner of 15 years later came on stage as a guest, venting about how her hubby tries to initiate intimacy before they even get a chance to catch up.

“We don’t get to spend a lot of time together because you work a lot,” Holly told him.

“I’m still debriefing and you’re trying to start the thigh rub or the hand holding and I’m like, ‘I’ve still got things to tell you.’”

After exchanging a few quips, Holly then stole the show with a zinger after Hughesy told the panel of an occasion when their “special time” was ruined “halfway through” because she had remembered a funny news story she heard that day and began laughing.

The quick-witted Holly brought the house down with her hilarious comeback.

“We weren’t halfway there! Number one, women are very good at multi-tasking and number two, I think you often have this idea that things have started when I’m not aware that they have!”

Revealed: What Dave Hughes looks like with new teeth

On last week’s episode of Hughesy, We Have a Problem, comedian Dave Hughes revealed the reason behind his gap-toothed, “meth addict” smile was because of his country upbringing and “too much orange juice”.

But could you imagine Hughesy without his trademark smile? You won’t be Hughesy without the gap!” wrote one commenter.

“Just does not look right, Hughesy’s missing teeth are his signature look,” said another.

However, some did think he should go ahead with the transformation, with one fan saying, “No excuse for bad teeth in this day and age, so yes definitely do it Hughesy.”

Others said the new teeth made him look “so much younger”.

What do you think? Do you prefer Hughesy’s unique smile or should he consider going through with the transformation?

Dave Hughes might have built up a thick skin after years of dealing with hecklers around the country, but the star of the new Channel 10 Show, Hughesy, We Have A Problem, has proven that he still has a soft spot, breaking down in tears on radio.

During the program, Hughes and his fellow panellists covered the topic of fathers who found it difficult to communicate their emotions to their children.

“Me and my father never really said I love you to each other and now he’s no longer with us,” Hughesy said on the show.

Following the show, Hughesy revealed on the Hit Network program that he co-hosts with Kate Langbroek, that he received a private message on Instagram form a stranger.

“I had a direct message on Instagram that made me cry,” Hughesy said on air yesterday.

“And made my mother cry.”

A post shared by David Hughes (@dhughesy) on Mar 6, 2018 at 3:23am PST

Langbroek encouraged Hughesy to read it, despite the difficulty he was having.

“Hey Dave, watching the show. I nursed your dad at Mercy and he loved his family so much. He would often speak of you as kids. You definitely have his humour. A real gentleman who was proud of his kids. Sarah Harris reveals her husband’s awkward request

What would you do if your husband asked you to wear his ex’s signature perfume? That’s the awkward situation Studio 10 host Sarah Harris found herself in, opening up about her hubby’s strange request on Dave Hughes’ comedy show Hughesy, We Have a Problem.

Asking the panel for advice, Harris revealed her husband Tom recently asked her to start wearing a “very floral and sickly sweet” perfume that wasn’t quite to her taste. What’s worse is that it was the same scent worn by his ex-girlfriend.

“First of all, is it a bit weird that he wants me to wear an ex’s perfume?” she asked co-panellists Meshel Laurie, Merrick Watts and Luke McGregor. “And, second of all, should I wear it?”

The group suggested she only wear it during their “special times”, but Harris expressed concern that it would only lead Tom to think of his “smelly” ex at the absolute worst time.

McGregor agreed, asking, “What if you start wearing it and then he goes, ‘Great,’ and then he goes, ‘Now, I know this is weird as well, but if you could start wearing this ex-girlfriend mask?’”

Unfortunately for Harris, none of the panel’s advice was all that helpful… but at least it was funny!

Tell us in the comments below, what would you do if your husband asked you to wear his ex’s favourite perfume?

Kate Langbroek injured in “crazed, violent” attack

Radio star Kate Langbroek has lashed out at politicians after she was injured trying to protect her babysitter who was attacked outside her home in the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda.

Bruised, shaken and angry after the “crazed, terrifying and violent” attack, Kate unleashed on politicians on her radio show for failing to clean up St Kilda in the face of growing crime rates.

Speaking on air on her Hughesy and Kate raduo show, Kate said the terrifying attack on Friday night was the last straw.

Kate described how her babysitter, Annabelle was walking to her car, which was parked less than 10 metres from Kate’s front door, at about 10pm when a man tried to get into the passenger seat.

A terrified Annabelle ran back to Kate’s house and banged on the front door.

The man, yelling and swearing, followed Annabelle and tried to get into the property.

With her children and the babysitter inside, Kate and her husband Peter went outside to investigate.

The man, who she described as looking “deranged”, was across the road but when he saw them he started running towards the house.

“He was quick as insanity and was right there on us,” she said.

Kate ran for the house, slamming the door once she was inside and holding the door to brace it.

As the man kicked the door repeatedly, police were called. About 12 officers arrived to take the man away.

Kate later tweeted a picture, showing the large bruise on her arm, to Victorian Housing minister Martin Foley.

“This is the bruise I sustained trying to keep that ‘vulnerable’ resident from kicking our front door in on Friday night,” she wrote. “The real vulnerable are the decent citizens of St Kilda. We await your action.”

Langbroek told listeners “the people we have elected to solve the problems are not solving the problems.”

“People who are living good, decent lives are having those lives compromised by people who have chosen to do the opposite,” she said.

Langbroek told Fairfax that anti-social behaviour in the area had become “rampant” in St Kilda since residents of the Gatwick were moved to public housing,

“Our children walk to school and [the other day] we saw a guy get a Glasgow kiss,” she said. “He was just walking around the corner with his headphones in and he got headbutted in broad daylight. It’s crazy.”

“It’s an extremely complex issue, but in the meantime we’re not being offered the most basic short-term solution.

“They [politicians] want to look like heroes and use words like ‘vulnerable’ and ‘the community’, but they’re not actually servicing the community. “

Dave Hughes reveals the bizarre reason why his teeth have started falling out

David Hughes’ new gig Hughesy, We Have A Problem promises to help Aussies “get over life’s infuriating problems”.

And now, the 47-year-old has openly discussed the infuriating problem he is experiencing – his teeth falling out.

Hughesy explained that he is missing 10 teeth and his wife thinks he looks like a drug addict.

“My wife is worried. She says I'm starting to look like a meth addict,” Hughesy announced on the Channel Ten show.

He joked that his teeth are falling out faster than his wife, Holly Hughes, because he was raised in the “country” and has consumed a lot of orange juice in his life.

“But I'm from the county and she's from the city and when you're from the country and your teeth fall out, you get on with your day,” he told the live studio audience.

“But when you're from the city, you got to keep them in your mouth your whole life.

“One of my problems right now is that I am missing a number of teeth.

“Not just one, two, three...I'm missing 10 teeth.”

The Australian comedian then put his dilemma into perspective for viewers at home.

“The human mouth only has 32 [teeth] and I'm missing 10...that's almost a third.”

Hughesy explained that his wife “forced” him to go to a specialist to have the problem corrected.

However, he was met with more hurdles at his appointment after learning that the solution would be a lot harder than originally anticipated.

“The person [health professional] took an x-ray of my mouth, and told me I don't have enough 'jaw' to fit the bolts to put in the false teeth,” he said.
In order to compensate for his lack of jaw, he could choose to have a lengthy bone graph.

“Take some hip bone, put that in your mouth and then you wait six months to see whether that nips with your jawbone and if it does, you'll have enough room for the bolts so we can start drilling,” he explained.

Later in the show, Hughesy asked his guest panel, which included Meshel Laurie, Sarah Harris, Luke McGregor and Merrick Watts, if he should get his teeth fixed.

Studio 10 presenter Sarah Harris asked, “What area of your hip bone will they take?”

Hughesy responded, “On the side here” (as he pointed to his buttock).

Harris clarified, “So, towards the bum.”

Hughesy nodded and said, “Yeah absolutely.”

“So you'll literally be speaking out of your arse!” Harris exclaimed.

The television series has received positive reviews on Twitter since its recent debut on Channel Ten.

“Funniest show on TV so far!” one viewer in commented.

Have you watched Hughesy, We Have A Problem? If so, what did you think of the show so far?
