"It’s disgusting": Sam Kerr's baby announcement ruined by trolls

The Matildas captain Sam Kerr and her fiancée Kristie Mewis have announced they are pregnant with their first child, but their news was sadly met with homophobic comments from online trolls.

The football power couple took to Instagram to announce the news with a photo of them holding ultrasound photos.

“Mewis-Kerr baby coming 2025!” the post read.

While Kerr's teammates Mary Fowler, Teagan Micah, Kyah Simon and Lydia Williams congratulated the couple, they had to turn off their comments following online trolls making "disgusting" homophobic comments across social media.

The trolls' behaviour has been condemned by sports commentators, fans and pride groups alike.

“Extremely disappointing to see even the slightest negative reaction to Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis’s fantastic news," BBC sport commentator Tom Overend began.

“Couples are free to do what they choose, and you can be a good parent whatever your gender, creed, colour or anything.

“We are in 2024 folks.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sam Kerr (@samanthakerr20)

David Shaw, a Manchester United fan, posted: “I can’t believe some of the comments I’ve seen about Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis news.

“Seen one saying how’s that legal and called it bulls***. Sam Kerr's Olympic dream shattered

Matildas captain Sam Kerr has been forced to sit out of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after still feeling the after effects of an injury she sustained early in the year.

In early January, Kerr suffered an ACL injury while on a training camp and despite her best efforts to recover for the Games, Football Australia confirmed she would continue her rehabilitation program in her home club environment and will not be available for selection.

Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson said the team has been dealing with a lot of difficult injuries, which has affected who will be eligible for the team selection.

“Unfortunately we have had a very very tough period with injuries,” Gustavsson said.

“I just got the summary sheet here a week ago and 15 out of these 37 players are either injured or just coming back from injury which means some of the players that are selected now is selected to be evaluated where they are with their physical status in the gym window and see where they will potentially be come the Olympics."

“I think everyone can do the math here and understand that obviously the Olympic roster will be based mostly out of those that are in camp. “

Gustavsson already has a clear picture of which players he wants in which positions to form the best possible team to send to Paris, but knows he may have to wait to see who is actually available as the Matildas pursue a first ever Olympics medal.

“This window will be a tough one for me and my staff in terms of evaluating players, where they are, and then the final selection process for Paris,” he said.

“With the Olympics approaching, selection is about seeing the overall picture over four years of performance and assembling the best team possible. We are pleased and confident we have those options across the pitch.”

"Who cares?": Kyle Sandilands backs Sam Kerr

Kyle Sandilands has weighed in on Matildas captain Sam Kerr's court battle, after it was alleged that she called a police officer in London a "stupid white b*****d" during a dispute over a taxi fare.

Sandilands was quick to defend the Matildas captain during the Kyle And Jackie O show on Tuesday and insisted that calling someone that didn't warrant a criminal conviction.

"It's not even a big deal. She call some guy 'white b*****d'. Who cares?" the 52-year-old shock jock said.

"White b******s don't care about that. That's for the other races to worry about," he added, before newsreader Brooklyn Ross quickly changed the topic.

Kerr, 30, is preparing to face a four-day trial next February, following the incident that occurred after a night out in Twickenham on January 30, 2023.

The football star appeared in a London court on Monday after she was accused of using insulting, threatening or abusive words that caused alarm or distress to the officer.

Kerr has maintained her innocence, pleading not guilty to the charges brought against her.

Her legal team hope to have the case thrown out when they return to court next month.

In response to the controversy, the sport's governing body Football Australia (FA) said that while they were aware of the legal proceedings, they didn't know about the charges laid against Kerr.

"As this is an ongoing legal matter, we are unable to provide further comment at this time. Our focus remains on supporting all our players, both on and off the field. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide support as appropriate," they said in a statement.

Images: Kyle and Jackie O show/ Getty

Sam Kerr’s alleged comments may have had a racial element, but they were not ‘racist’

Mario Peucker, Victoria University

Footballer Sam Kerr has been charged with “racially aggravated harassment” over a January 2023 incident in which she allegedly insulted a London police officer. According to widespread media reports, she is said to have called the officer a “stupid white bastard”.

Kerr has pleaded not guilty to the charge and has reportedly denied using the word “bastard”.

According to section 33 of the British Crime and Disorder Act, to be found guilty of such an offence, the conduct would have had to cause – or have intended to cause – alarm or distress.

Regardless of the court’s ultimate verdict, one big question seems to occupy the minds of many: does the phrase attributed to Kerr constitute racism?

Kerr was born in Western Australia, and has Indian ancestry on her father’s side. Can she be racist towards a white person, and more specifically to a white police officer?

Assuming it is true Kerr used the term “white”, there is a racial element. But “racial” is not the same as “racist”.

Definitions of racism

It is important to note here that “race” is not a biological category (there is only one human race). Race is a social construct, invented and cemented centuries ago to legitimise colonial atrocities, oppression and forms of subjugation including slavery.

There are many definitions of racism, but there has been a broad consensus for decades that racism is more than “just” prejudice and discriminatory behaviour. It is not simply a matter of less favourable treatment of an individual or group of people based on their actual or ascribed ethnic background, skin colour, origin or related characteristics.

Racism also reflects and manifests as systemic exclusion and marginalisation based on historically rooted power imbalances and racial hierarchies that put white people at the top.

To put it very simply, the scholarly (if not the legal) definition is that “racism equals power plus prejudice”.

In a vicious cycle, everyday racism and discrimination are shaped and justified by racial hierarchies, while they operate continuously in a way that cements power imbalances and racial marginalisation.

This may sound a bit abstract, but if we do not recognise this power dynamic, we trivialise racism as little more than name-calling. We will fail to understand how racism operates and how it continues to affect people from racially marginalised groups in their daily lives.

One way to illustrate the systemic nature of racism is to look at the persistent lack of representation of people of colour in leadership positions in the corporate sector, the media and governments in Australia and elsewhere.

In the United Kingdom, where the alleged incident occurred, institutional racism – including within the police force – has been recognised since the release of the Macpherson report in 1999. It was reaffirmed in 2023 by the Baroness Casey Review, despite some political pushback.

The review found “Met officers are 82% White and 71% male, and the majority do not live in the city they police. As such, the Met does not look like the majority of Londoners.”

Reverse racism?

Anti-discrimination legislation in the UK and Australia usually does not speak explicitly of “racism”. It outlaws certain acts that are motivated, partially or wholly, by a person’s race (or other personal identity markers).

Legislators introduced these laws with the intention of enhancing the legal protections for those who were considered vulnerable to racism. In Australia, for example, the Racial Discrimination Act (1975) is often celebrated as a legal cornerstone in the country’s journey away from its racist “White Australia” history towards a modern multicultural society.

The United Nations’ International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (1965), ratified by Australia in 1975 and the UK in 1969, makes its intention explicit when it calls on all state parties to make it an offence to disseminate “ideas based on racial superiority”.

The issue of power structures should also be seen through an institutional lens. It is difficult to imagine a person on the streets of London with more institutional power than a white police officer.

Being called a “stupid bastard” might hurt someone’s feelings. But while I’m in no position to judge whether Sam Kerr’s alleged actions have caused “distress” to the officer – as the law would require – labelling the incident as racist is clearly not in line with what racism means.

Such a definition would not align with the concept’s institutional and systemic dimensions. It is not what anti-discrimination laws were intended to outlaw.

Claims of anti-white or “reverse” racism are based on a shallow, misguided and inaccurate understanding of what racism really constitutes.

If Kerr’s court case fails to acknowledge the deeper purpose of anti-racism legislation by equating “racial” with “racist”, it risks setting a highly problematic precedent that would undermine efforts to acknowledge and tackle racism in all its forms.

What would be the message to those millions of people in the UK, Australia and elsewhere who have to face racism every day without recognition of the harm it causes and without the support and capacity to sue the perpetrators?

What would they think about their right to equality and their place in society?<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Sam Kerr's alleged racial comments revealed by UK paper

The legal controversy surrounding Matildas star Sam Kerr following allegations of racially charged remarks directed towards a police officer in London continues to unfold, after a UK newspaper published those alleged remarks.

According to The Sun, Kerr allegedly called a police officer a "stupid white bastard" during a dispute over a taxi fare. The details emerged as Kerr faced charges for using insulting, threatening or abusive words towards the officer, causing alarm or distress. The seriousness of the allegations is underscored by the potential consequences, with Kerr facing a maximum sentence of two years' imprisonment if convicted.

The incident is said to have taken place in January 2023 shortly after Kerr's remarkable performance in a Chelsea FA Cup victory, and Kerr has maintained her innocence, pleading not guilty to the charges brought against her.

The delayed prosecution in Kerr's case has sparked speculation, with reports suggesting that determining the appropriate charge was a complex process for the Crown Prosecution Service. However, as the trial approaches, the focus shifts towards the legal proceedings and the evidence that will be presented in court.

Throughout her career, Kerr has been a prominent figure in the fight against racism in sport. Her past actions, including posing with an Aboriginal flag alongside her Matildas teammates, reflect a commitment to promoting inclusivity and unity. Kerr's accolades both on and off the field have solidified her iconic status, making the allegations against her all the more surprising.

In response to the controversy, Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson and Football Australia CEO James Johnson expressed their lack of prior knowledge regarding the incident.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declined to comment directly on the matter, but said that Kerr's actions during her tenure as the national flag bearer exemplified pride and dignity.

“I don’t comment on legal matters before Australian courts, let alone other ones,” Albanese said. “I will say this about my contact with Sam Kerr, she was our flag bearer at the coronation. My contact with her was exemplary. She did Australia proud at that time and I think that my contact with her has been nothing but delightful.”

Images: Getty

Matildas captain Sam Kerr to face criminal trial

Matildas superstar Sam Kerr has found herself at the centre of legal proceedings in London, as she pled not guilty to charges stemming from an alleged incident involving a police officer earlier this year.

Kerr, aged 30, appeared before Kingston Crown Court via videolink to contest accusations of using insulting, threatening or abusive language towards a police officer in Twickenham on January 30.

During the hearing, Kerr confirmed her identity and entered a "not guilty" plea to the charge, which was later confirmed by the Metropolitan Police. The specifics of the charge were outlined in a police charge sheet, citing Kerr for a racially aggravated offence under Section 4A of the Public Order Act 1986. The incident allegedly occurred during police intervention related to a complaint involving a taxi fare.

The trial, slated to commence in February 2025, is expected to span four days, during which two police officers will provide evidence. Meanwhile, Football Australia (FA) has issued a statement acknowledging the legal proceedings involving Kerr, asserting their commitment to support all players both on and off the field. However, due to the ongoing legal nature of the situation, further comments were withheld.

“Football Australia is aware of the legal proceedings involving Sam Kerr in the United Kingdom,” the statement read. “As this is an ongoing legal matter, we are unable to provide further comment at this time. Our focus remains on supporting all our players, both on and off the field. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide support as appropriate.”

The announcement comes after Kerr's unfortunate sidelining from both club and international duties. Suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during Chelsea's warm-weather training camp in Morocco, Kerr faces a prolonged period of rehabilitation, ruling her out of action for the foreseeable future. Her absence from the Matildas' lineup is particularly sorely felt, with preparations for the Paris Olympics underway.

Despite the setback, Football Australia has not officially ruled Kerr out of contention for the Olympics. However, the typical recovery timeline for ACL injuries suggests a lengthy rehabilitation process, casting doubts on Kerr's participation in the upcoming tournament scheduled to begin on July 26.

Images: Getty Images

"I was heartbroken": Why Sam Kerr had to hide her gender

Sam Kerr is known as one of the greatest strikers in women's football. And now, with the Matlidas on the way to the World Cup semifinals, we are learning more and more about the challenges Kerr faced as a junior Aussie Rules player in South Fremantle, WA

Kerr, who grew up in East Fremantle, south of Perth, did not have an easy start to what would be an exceptional football career, as she initially started playing for the boys' team when she was around five or six.

Kerr, was the only girl who played junior Australian rules football for South Fremantle, but that didn't deter her from fulfilling her dreams.

“I knew I’d be the only girl on the team but that didn’t worry me at all,” she wrote in her new book My Journey to the World Cup.

Kerr said that her teammates assumed she was a boy because she had “short hair and blonde tips”, but didn't do anything to correct them as she was comfortable with it.

So she decided to keep her gender a secret.

"I didn’t want them to treat me any differently just because I was a girl," she said.

“I remember one of the boys crying when he found out.

“But as good as I was out on the field, and as much as I loved playing the game, the physical differences between the guys and me eventually became too pronounced and the play was too rough," she added.

“One day, I came home from a game with yet another black eye and bloody lip, and that’s when my dad and brother both said, ‘Nup, this isn’t happening anymore’.

“I was getting battered around so much out on the field that it was getting to be a big problem. Dad and my coach both sat me down then and said it was getting far too dangerous for me to continue to play," she said.

Kerr revealed that she was devastated that she wasn't allowed to play football anymore because there were no girls' teams in her area for her to join.

“They said they were sorry, but that I wasn’t allowed to play football any more. I understood the reasons why, but I was heartbroken.

"Back then, there were no girls’ teams in my area for me to join, and to know that I’d never play a sport that I loved so much ever again was devastating.”

By the age of 12, she switched to association football, but a year later she was spotted by Perth Glory striker Bobby Despotovski who has fascinated by her raw talent and athleticism.

By the age of 15 she made her professional soccer debut and earned her maiden Matildas cap and the rest is history.

Images: Ryan Pierse Getty Images/ Nine

Scariest moment of Matilda's victory over Denmark

Sam Kerr, the captain of the Matildas, finally made her long-awaited debut in this Women's World Cup during the recent match against Denmark, when she took to the field as a substitute at the 79-minute mark, contributing to Australia's 2-0 victory and securing a spot in the quarterfinals.

After weeks of speculation about her fitness, Kerr's left calf muscle has dominated conversations across the nation – making her presence on the pitch a relief to many who had been closely following her situation.

During her brief appearance on the field, and following her arrival that saw the 75,874-strong crowd on its feet, there were very positive signs of her competitive readiness – before a heart-stopping moment of tension arose when she slipped on the slick turf and experienced what appeared to be a groin issue.

Kerr addressed the incident in the post-match conference, saying: “I just slipped. I have terrible groins and just fell over like a normal thing. I think it’s just on a microscope because I’ve been injured the last three weeks. But it’s nothing.”

However, her unexpected fall could not help but catch the attention of coach Tony Gustavsson in that terrifying moment, who expressed his concern through wildly animated gestures as he attempted to determine what had gone wrong. However, he later confirmed that Kerr had assured him she was capable of continuing to play.

During the press conference, the Gustavsson coach was asked to share his emotions when Kerr encountered the mishap, while refraining from using strong language. In response, after a moment of laughter, he said, “I know I can tend to swear too much at times when I get passionate, but today I’ll try to stay away from that. I got very nervous. I didn’t see the slip until she was on the floor. But when I saw that obviously you go: ‘Oh!’

“And then straight away communicate with her: ‘How are you doing, you need to come off? You good?’

“She wanted to stay on so hopefully that means she’s OK.”

Kerr had been adhering to a rigorous training regimen since suffering the injury just two days before the tournament's commencement. After the match, she revealed that the physiotherapists were meticulous in overseeing her recovery, even prohibiting her from participating in warm-down runs with her teammates.

Reports also suggest that the training staff advised Kerr against engaging in running and jumping during the post-game celebrations with her team.

When asked about Australia's upcoming match as the tournament deepens, she responded, “I don’t even know when it is. I have a plan, the physios have a plan – I asked them if I could run after (the match) and they said no!

“So I’m sure I’ll be following their plan like I have the past few weeks.”

Images: Getty / Channel 7

Sam Kerr shares rare insight into romance with rival sports star

Aussie soccer star Sam Kerr has shared a rare insight into her relationship with her US player girlfriend, Kristie Mewis.

Speaking to UK online publication Gaffer, the couple confirmed that they first knew of each other back in 2019 while competing in the National Women's Soccer League in the US.

The two soccer stars then slid into each other's direct messages on Instagram and sparked a conversation.

Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, they were "forced" to get to know each other online.

"It was about three or four months until we could hang out in person," Kerr said, referring to the first romantic meeting with her now girlfriend.

"The first time we ever met there was quarantine so we had to spend two weeks together the first time we met.

"I was thinking if I don’t like her this is going to be awkward".

But her fears were proven wrong as the couple are still going strong, their relationship close to hitting the two-year mark.

"We didn’t share it for ages, then it just got too hard to hide it," Kerr said regarding their sweet relationship.

Kerr also shared the story of how the couple first started coming out to their friends.

"I remember one time we were with some friends and some fans asked for a picture and then we thought we don’t really want this coming out from someone else. We want to be the ones to share it," she said

"Once we told our friends it kind of started getting out there a little bit".

Mewis, on the other hand, said she was more eager to go public with their relationship.

"I was so proud that she was mine so I wanted to share it. I love her and I was so proud to be her girlfriend".

Mewis also shared that she loved sharing their relationship on social media, as she hopes that in publicising their relationship, they can change a few people's lives.

"I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me," she said.

"So I think if we can change the way one or two people feel about themselves, they can look at us and see that we're happy and we're trying to be as successful as we can and we're an out gay couple. I think that that's so important".

The couple are now one of soccer's power couples and are both "out and proud" in the queer and straight communities.

Image: Instagram/ Gaffer

Judith Durham farewelled at state memorial

Judith Durham, the lead singer of The Seekers, has been farewelled at a state memorial with tributes from her bandmates, family, and fellow musicians, as well as the performance of an unreleased song featuring her vocals.

The memorial was held on September 6, just over a month after Durham passed away at the age of 79 following complications from chronic lung disease.

Band member Athol Guy unveiled the song, Carry Me, which was written by fellow Seekers member Bruce Woodley, during Tuesday night’s service to honour Durham.

"This song is now our collective gift to share with you tonight as we celebrate Judith's magnificent gifts to us all," Guy said.

"May it carry her safely on the rest of her journey."

He said the song was written for someone needing inner peace.

“That’s probably the space that a lot of us are in as we’re here tonight.”

Other musical tributes, mainly hits from The Seekers, came from Durham’s sister Beverley Sheehan, The Wiggles, Dami Im, Vika and Linda Bull, David Campbell, and Deborah Cheetham.

The Georgy Girl singer’s nephew, Tony Sheehan, spoke on behalf of the family at the service, saying that Durham’s mother had wished her daughters would not be tone deaf.

“She got her wish,” he said to laughter from the audience.

Sheehan said his aunt was always destined to be a musician, having told her sister as a child “that one day, she’d sing on all the stages of the world”.

He went on to describe her as a deeply generous and optimistic person, even when faced with death.

“Judith faced death as she faced everything: with calm and strength,” Sheehan said.

“We will miss you but we are so proud of you.”

Durham’s sister and fellow singer Beverley recalled their love of music that had been shared since childhood.

“We'd [sing together] early in the morning and my father would have to come in and say: 'that's enough, your mother can't sleep'," she said.

She went on to perform The Jelly Bean Blues, accompanied by jazz band The Syncopators.

"This perhaps could be the hardest thing I've ever had to do," she said.

Guy, Woodley, and fellow The Seekers bandmate Keith Protger each took to the stage to share their admiration for Durham.

"It's a real surreal experience for me, standing on this Hamer Hall stage without Judith," said Potger.

"We shared triumphs and adventures on this very platform.

"You're not really gone, because your picture is on my wall and your boundless spirit and love will be in my heart forever."

Woodley praised Durham for her “bravery and single-mindedness” as she continued to perform even while battling serious lung disease.

“Her bravery and single-mindedness in overcoming the enormous physical obstacles that life threw at her has always been an inspiration to me," he said.

"Quite often, the boys and I would hear her in her dressing room coughing her heart out a few minutes before a show and thinking to ourselves, 'there's no way she's going to sing tonight'.

"Wrong."

Guy said the band hoped to celebrate their 60th anniversary at Hamer Hall as initially planned, before introducing Carry Me.

"Here's our last song together," he said.

Images: Judith Durham Official (Facebook), Victorian Government

Peter Overton’s “insult” to Miranda Kerr

Peter Overton has made a hilarious mistake when describing Australian model Miranda Kerr.

The Nine News anchor was speaking about Kerr and her husband, Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel, who paid the entire debt for 285 graduates at an art college in Los Angeles.

When referring to Kerr, the veteran journalist said “Australian super mole” instead of “Australian supermodel”.

Overton, 56, immediately noticed his slip of the tongue and corrected himself during the bulletin.

The term “mole” or “moll” is an insulting word to describe a prostitute.

Viewers picked up on Overton’s mistake and laughed about it online.

“OMG did @PeterOverton just say what I thought he did! LOL #SuperMoll Miranda Kerr? Ooooopsss…” one person wrote.

“@9NewsSyd did Peter Overton just call Miranda Kerr a super mole ? lol Freudian slip,” another commented.

“He’s been talking to Orlando Bloom,” another wrote in reference to Kerr’s ex husband.

News of Kerr and Spiegel paying off the debt of 285 art students at Otis College of Art occurred during their graduation.

“We know that for most of you and your families, the shared burden of student debt is a heavy price that you paid for an exceptional Otis College education,” college president Charles Hirschhorn said.

“We understand that this debt can compromise your future and limit your creative ambitions. We do not want to see this happen.

“We are pleased to announce today that Evan and Miranda, through their Spiegel Family Fund, have made the largest single gift in the history of Otis College.

“Their gift will enable you to pay your student loans.”

Image: Nine News/Getty

Campaigner sparks controversy after blasting picture book

A British domestic violence campaigner has called out Judith Kerr’s 1968 picture book, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, as a reinforcement of problematic ideas.

Rachel Adamson, the co-director of charity Zero Tolerance, which aims to end men’s violence against women, has claimed the book is an “old fashioned” depiction of women.

“We know that gender stereotypes are harmful and they reinforce gender inequality, and that gender inequality is the cause of violence against women and girls,” she told BBC Radio Scotland.

Kerr’s picture book tells the story of a tiger who arrives on a family’s doorstep and, once invited in for tea, proceeds to consume all of their food and drinks.

Adamson criticised the “stereotypical” ending to the book, where the dad comes home from work and saves the day by taking his family to a cafe.

The campaigner also questioned why the tiger was not female or gender neutral.

“We need to recognise these aren’t just stories… it is reflective of a society that we need to think more closely about,” she said.

Adamson described Kerr as a “wonderful author”, but was aware that her comments would “make a lot of people unhappy”.

Despite her strong views about the book, Adamson has stressed that she doesn’t want it banned.

Instead, she believes it could be used to “raise a conversation” in nurseries.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Meghan Gallacher, the Scottish Conservatives spokesperson for children and young people, described Adamson’s language as “completely unhelpful”.

“While attitudes change over time, parents will be left bemused at some of these claims by Zero Tolerance,” Gallacher said.

“This sort of language is completely unhelpful as we try to educate children about much-loved publications from days gone by.

“There are far better ways for this publicly funded group to go about changing attitudes, rather than simply calling for these books to be banned from nurseries.”

Kerr, who had fled Nazi Germany when she was just 13, had previously denied claims there was a darker meaning to the story.

The idea came to her while she was a stay-at-home mother of her two small children.

“It got really very boring,” she later recalled.

“We’d go for a walk and have tea, and that was it really. So I thought, why not have a tiger come?”

Kerr continued to write and illustrate books from 1968 until she passed away in May of 2019.

Image: Instagram, Rachel Adamson
