AFL star's wife spends wedding anniversary in hospital amid cancer battle

AFL star Jeremy Finlayson's wife Kellie Finlayson has revealed she's had a bit of a setback with her health and is spending her second wedding anniversary in hospital.

The 29-year-old is battling terminal stage four bowel cancer that metastasised in her lungs.

She took to Instagram to share the update from her hospital bed, with a picture of the happy couple showing off their rings on their wedding day, and an updated photo of herself in the ward, with the caption: "Happy anniversary darl. Two years ago V. Today!"

"Happy anniversary to me," she added, using a crying with laughter emoji and a bandaged love heart emoji.

The AFL star shared his own anniversary message with an Instagram story, writing: "Happy anniversary <3"

Kellie did not explain why she was hospitalised.

The couple tied the knot back in March 2023 in South Australia.

Kellie, who is a mother-of-one, was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of 25.

She previously opened up about her diagnosis on the Nova podcast Head Game, and shared just how hard her chemotherapy treatment was.

"I lost a s--t ton of weight. I mean, I had a stoma, so I had a foreign object on my stomach. I wasn't the normal mum that she should have had, but I was as good as I possibly could be. It was hard," she said at the time.

"I was allergic to one of the strands of that chemotherapy, which is why, when I did relapse, I had to change chemotherapy, which meant I lost my hair.

"I was on my deathbed. I was getting anaphylactic reactions every three weeks to this chemotherapy. So I was essentially dying every three weeks, just to get better."

Image: Instagram

Remains found of backpacker who disappeared 23 years ago

Police have located the remains of a backpacker who was last seen 23 years ago.

In 2001, Kellie Ann Carmichael, who was 24 at the time, left her hostel in Katoomba to go for a walk and was never seen again.

Now during an unrelated search in the Blue Mountains bushland, NSW Police have located human remains that, after initial testing, have been confirmed to be the young backpacker from Geelong.

At the time of her disappearance, Kellie was last seen by staff at a Katoomba hostel on 29th April 2001, as she had told staff she would return that day to collect her belongings.

Her parents contacted hostel staff on May 5th, and after discovering her belongings were still at reception, they reported her missing to police.

After police launched an investigation into her disappearance, it was believed that Carmichael had taken her own life, due to her ongoing struggles with schizophrenia.

However, Kellie's mother Margaret knew her daughter wouldn't commit suicide, telling the Geelong Advertiser, "We know that, and everyone who knew her knows that."

"She wasn't well at the time but she loved life and was a beautiful girl."

Her father, John, said the grim developments had taken their toll on the couple, who are now hoping to take her remains back home to Victoria.

In 2011, a $200,000 reward was issued for information related to the case, after a coronial inquest ruled Carmichael had died but was unable to provide a direct cause or circumstances.

Carmichael’s parents have previously said they felt robbed by their daughter’s mysterious disappearance.

“We’ve never had the chance to have our daughter … our family has never been the same,” Margaret Carmichael said in 2011.

Image credits: Missing Persons Register / NSW Police

Kochie called out over "disgusting" remarks

Port Adelaide president David Koch has come under fire over remarks he made while discussing Jeremy Finlayson's homophobic slur towards another player.

Finlayson is under AFL investigation after he admitted to aiming a homophobic slur at an Essendon player on Friday’s game at Adelaide Oval.

The player Finlayson directed the comment towards is not yet known, but on Saturday night, Port Adelaide confirmed that a “contrite Finlayson made the club aware during the three-quarter time break” of the incident “and apologised to the victim on the field after the final siren last night”.

On Sunday morning, Koch appeared on ABC’s Offsiders to discuss the incident with host Kelli Underwood, veteran journalist Caroline Wilson and AFL footy boss Laura Kane.

“There’s no excuse for it. Jeremy was incredibly remorseful, actually told the coaches at three-quarter time that it was inexcusable, went and apologised to the player after the game,” Koch said.

“That’s no excuse whatsoever. It’s in the heat of the battle, should not have done it and we’ll wait for the AFL to go through its process.”

When discussing what sort of punishment the league could hand down to Finlayson, footy boss Kane questioned whether it may be similar to Taylor Walker's six-week ban after he used a racial slur.

But Kochie wasn't on board with linking the two incidents, and said that the the league had set a precedent with the ruling it handed down to North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson.

“Not ruling it out (an internal investigation), but, umm, you know, if you look at comparisons and benchmarks that have been set,” Koch said.

“With a 55-year-old coach premeditated, target the player, walk up to them is very different to a player in the heat of battle when there was a lot of niggle in the game, the pressure again - absolutely no excuse, not condoning it whatever, and should not be part of the game, but if you’re going to look at a comparison, that would be the benchmark there.”

ABC’s Offsiders host Underwood pressed further and asked him: “If I put it to you, it’s in the same category as Taylor Walker’s racial slur, what would your response to that be?”

Koch responded: “I don’t think that’s realistic. I think the benchmark has been set in terms of...”

Wilson interjected: “With Alistair Clarkson which I thought was too light."

But Koch insisted: “OK. But the benchmark has been set.”

The comments from the former Sunrise presenter was slammed on social media.

“This is pretty disgusting from Koch," wrote Columnist Greg Jericho.

“Yeah nah @kochie_online. A slur is a slur is a slur. You say you don’t condone a player using a homophobic slur on the field and that there’s no excuse but in the same sentence practically excuse it by saying it occurred ‘in the heat of battle’ and a ‘niggle’. So disappointing," another user wrote.

“Terrible take from Koch. We are benchmarking abuse now. Not making excuses but … homophobia and racism have no place in the game," a third added.

“@kochie_online as a leader of our football club this statement is beyond disappointing. A slur against a marginalised group is exactly the same the nature of it is irrelevant. You need to do better!” a fourth commented.

Images: Getty/ ABC

House of Hope: Fresh start for Kelly's kids

Gold Coast mum Kelly Wilkinson, who tragically passed away two years ago, has left behind three young children between the ages of two and nine.

Her life was cut short in April 2021, allegedly at the hands of her estranged husband, Brian Earl Johnston. The horrific incident resulted in Kelly's body being found badly burned in her Arundel home's backyard, while Mr Johnston was discovered nearby with severe burns to his hands and airway.

Since then, Kelly's children have been under the care of her sister, Danielle Carroll, and her husband Rhys. The Carroll family, along with their five children and Kelly's three kids, have been living together in a cramped four-bedroom house, where living spaces were converted into sleeping quarters. The challenges of accommodating such a large family in limited space have been immense, and at times, they find themselves with five people sharing a single bed.

However, their situation took a positive turn when businesswoman Tamika Smith, a relative of Mr Carroll, heard about the tragedy and decided to lend her support.

The founder of My Bella Casa and Top 100 Women launched a campaign called "I Stand With Kelly" shortly after Ms Wilkinson's passing. The campaign aimed to build a new home for the 10-person family.

With the help of an anonymous contributor, Ms Smith secured a plot of land, and the renowned homebuilder, Metricon, generously donated an entire house for the cause.

After two years of hard work and dedication, the family's fully furnished new home was finally revealed to them.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tamika Smith (@tamika_stephanie)

Mr Carroll expressed his excitement about the new house, especially for Kelly's three children, as it will provide them with a fresh start and a place they can call their own. While the loss of their mother is deeply felt, the children are constantly surrounded by love and care from their extended family.

Kelly's kids have not forgotten their mother, and though they miss her dearly, they understand that she is no longer with them.

“They know she’s gone," Mrs Carroll told A Current Affair. "They constantly say that they miss her. The two year old does ask for mum but they know she’s not coming back.”

The Carroll family, along with their own children, have written heartfelt letters to thank the builders for their incredible efforts in creating this new home.

The house not only represents a new beginning for Ms Wilkinson's children and the Carroll family but also serves as a reminder of the love she brought to her family before her untimely passing.

Though the pain of her loss remains, the community's support in building this new home has been a heartwarming gesture, one that Kelly's family deeply appreciates and will surely treasure forever.

Images: Today Show / Instagram / GoFundMe

AFL star marries amid cancer battle

AFL star Jeremy Finlayson and his partner Kellie Gardner have tied the knot in an intimate ceremony.

The Port Adelaide player and his now wife, both 27, exchanged vows in South Australia's Tennyson Beach on Sunday with only 21 close friends and family in attendance.

Kellie shared a photo of the beaming newlyweds showing off their rings on Instagram with the caption, "THE FINLAYSONS", as well wishes for the couple flooded in.

Jeremy and Kellie's wedding was a long time coming, as the couple originally planned to marry in October 2022, but had to postpone their nuptials after Kellie underwent chemotherapy, radiation treatment and surgeries for a devastating cancer diagnosis.

Gardner was diagnosed with bowel cancer two years ago, just three months after their daughter Sophia was born in August 2021.

However, in January came the awful news the cancer had spread to her lungs after the mum-of-one felt a tightening in her chest.

After ruling out COVID-19 as the reason for the pain, it was discovered a mass "a bit bigger than a tennis ball" was discovered in her chest cavity.

In February, Gardner told Mark Soderstrom's The Soda Room podcast she experienced a series of stomach problems ahead of her diagnosis and wishes she got a medical check-up sooner.

"If I had got all of my tummy problems checked and not just been thinking I had a lactose intolerance like every other Joe, Dick and Harry these days. If I had got it checked…" she said on the podcast.

"You hear cancer and you attach it to a 60-year-old. You don't attach it to a 25-year-old who is quite healthy, who runs marathons and who just had a baby."

"I was a fit, young mum. You just don't attach it to that."

Jeremy and Kellie are planning a more extravagant wedding bash for October this year once the AFL season is over, with Gardner hoping to have kicked cancer for good by then.

Terence Kelly confesses to abducting Cleo Smith

Image: Getty

Cleo Smith’s abductor Terence Kelly has confessed to kidnapping the four-year-old from her family tent and keeping her captive for 18 days.

Kelly, 36, was arrested after detectives raided his Carnarvon house at 12.46 am on November 3rd and found the little girl alone inside a bedroom playing with toys.

The next day Terence was charged with child abduction and flown to Perth where he remains in custody at Casuarina Prison. During an appearance in Carnarvon Magistrate’s Court on Monday, Kelly pleaded guilty to child abduction via video link.

Kelly appeared solemn and spent much of the hearing looking down. He spoke only one word, ‘guilty’, when asked by Magistrate Ben White what his plea to the kidnapping charge was.

He admitted taking Cleo from her family’s tent on October the 16th at Quobba Blowholes campsite as her parents slept metres away.

Following one of the largest missing persons investigations in Australian history, Cleo was rescued 18 days later after four detectives stormed Kelly’s home in a midnight raid.

In the days after Cleo’s rescue, WA Police acting Commissioner Col Blanch said mobile phone data and CCTV footage of a car entering Carnarvon the night Cleo vanished led police to raid Kelly’s house.

The details of why Kelly took Cleo, or how police solved the case, are yet to be revealed in court.

Cleo’s family have declined to speak to media since her safe return, only issuing a statement thanking the community for its support and requesting privacy.

The Nine Network, which publishes this masthead, will pay almost $2 million for an interview with the family in what is believed to be one of the largest deals in Australian television history.

Outside court, before Kelly’s admission, a former neighbour of Kelly’s, Esther Mingo, told media she hoped Kelly would “open his mouth up” and tell the truth.

She also voiced repeated frustration that none of his family members were attending his court hearings.

“He’s got stacks of family ... where are his mother and father, why don’t they come here?” she said.

After the hearing, Ms Mingo and two other women refused to speak to the media. His lawyer, Kate Turtley-Chappel, also declined to comment.

Kelly will appear in Perth District Court on March 25th for a date to be set for his sentencing.

"Those are the rules": Kelly Slater barred from Australia

Surfing legend Kelly Slater has been told he will not be able to enter Australia without a Covid-19 vaccination.

The 11-time world champion has previously refused to disclose his vaccination status and spoken out about his exasperation about making the jab mandatory, but assured fans he's not anti-vax.

He has, however, publicly defended American podcast host Joe Rogan over dishing out dangerous health advice, and more recently blasted the Australian government over the decision to deport Novak Djokovic.

After Novak's highly publicised deportation last week, Slater took to social media to say, "maybe Stockholm Syndrome can now change its name to Melbourne/Australia syndrome", and "so much brainwashed hatred in people's hearts regardless of vax status".

After receiving backlash over his views, the surfing champ deleted the posts.

Despite his opinions, Slater now faces the same fate as Novak Djokovic, as he risks being barred from entering the country if he continues to refuse to disclose his vaccination status, unless he proves he is eligible for a legitimate exemption.

Slater is planning to enter Australia for the upcoming World Surf League championship events, which will take place in Victoria in April, before another event in Western Australia.

Federal Sports Minister Richard Colbeck said Slater "has no chance of getting into the country" if he is not vaccinated.

"I reckon he knows the rules. It doesn't matter whether you're a surfer, or a tennis player, a tourist or anyone else, those are the rules. They apply to everyone," Colbeck said.

"I don't like the chances of him competing in Victoria, and I'd hate to think of what the chances were of him competing in Western Australia."

Why Terence Darrell Kelly’s neighbour is clearing out

Images: 7NEWS

The neighbour of accused Cleo Smith kidnapper, Terence Kelly is so scared of what will happen once police leave the area that he’s packing up and leaving.

Ever since Cleo was found at the home 18 days after she went missing, there has been a strong police presence at the Carnarvon property.

Detectives and forensic officers have been at the Tonkin Crescent house each day, but security guards have also protected the house from vandalism or vigilante attacks while Kelly is in custody and police carry out their work.

Kelly’s neighbour believes once police and security presence stops, the duplex could become the target “revenge” attacks and vandalism.

“The house will be smashed,” he told 7NEWS.

“A lot of people are disappointed and angry about what has happened, so there’s a greater chance that once the police are gone, we expect something will happen.

“100 per cent sure they will come here and smash the house.”

As he was packing up on Thursday, Kelly’s neighbour showed 7NEWS through his property, which is a mirror image of the home next door where Cleo Smith was held captive.

The two bedrooms are positioned away from the common wall, which is hardly sound proofed, with only fibro and a timber frame separating the living rooms of the two properties.

“I find it hard to know that it was right next door to me. It took me a while to absorb it.”

Kelly was described as the perfect neighbour. He didn’t drink, didn’t smoke or take drugs and the two would occasionally chat when taking the bins out. Kelly would keep an eye on his house if he was away.

Kelly’s neighbour has been offered a new place to live in wake of what allegedly happened next door.

Police have stripped Kelly’s home gathering evidence, all but the sleeping bag which still remains missing.

Police tape is set to come down once a final sweep of the home has been done. Those who have become accustomed to street presence have growing fears about what might happen next.

"You're not a scientist": Kochie and Craig Kelly go head to head over AstraZeneca doubts

Sunrise host David Koch has slammed MP Craig Kelly after Kelly pushed for the Federal government to suspect the rollout of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

Kelly urged the government to "take the foot off the pedal a little bit" after other countries stopped using the vaccine after some recipients developed blood clots.

Kochie, however, wasn't having any of it and accused the independent MP of "undermining confidence" in the vaccination plan.

Kelly stood firm by his viewpoint.

“When it was only Norway and Denmark (who had paused the jab) only two countries, it was fair enough to continue the rollout here.

“But now when you’ve got health regulators in countries like Germany, Portugal, Italy, France and Spain, when health regulators in all those countries have looked at it and said look guys let’s just take the foot off the pedal a little bit, let’s just hold and check to make sure we’re going to err on the side of caution and apply the precautionary principle.

“That is happening in all these countries that still have very high coronavirus deaths rates, but here in Australia we have no deaths, so I think we should take the foot off the pedal a little bit.”

Kochie said that Europe's medicines regulator was "firmly convinced" that the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine outweigh the risk of side effects.

“You’re not a scientist, the European Medicines Agency, it’s full of scientists, they’re the peak body in Europe above the German authorities and the Italian authorities and the like, and they’re saying don’t stop it,” he said.

“When we have 17,000 blood clots in Australia every year anyhow, it seems just out of whack.”

Kelly said that there are "mixed opinions" on the vaccine anyway and that he wasn't undermining confidence.

“I think actually if we show that we are erring on the side of caution, we would actually show that we are encouraging the rollout,” he argued.

Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kely has said that there is "no evidence" that the AstraZeneca vaccine is linked to blood clotting.

“We do expect to see blood clots at the time when we when vaccinations are given,” he said.

“But this does not mean that an event that happens after vaccination has been given is indeed due to that vaccine.

“From my perspective, I do not see that there is any specific link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and blood clots, and I’m not alone in that opinion."

That’s c**p”: Kelli Underwood butts heads with Waleed Aly

AFL commentator Kelli Underwood and The Project host Waleed Aly have had a clash while discussing whether Saturday’s night time Grand Final was a success.

In a historic first, the AFL’s premier event was held at night at the Gabba in Brisbane as Richmond beat Geelong by 31 points under lights.

While television ratings soared compared to last year, footy fans unanimously agreed that the Grand Final should remain a daytime spectacle.

Appearing on ABC’s Offsiders, Aly didn’t hold back when asked about his thoughts on the later time slot.

“I hated it, I hated it,” Aly said. “I think it’s the kind of thing you like when you don’t actually care about the game that is happening.

“It’s the kind of thing you gravitate towards when you want it to be an event, not a game. And that is exactly what it felt like.”

But Offsiders host Underwood immediately hit back at Aly.

“That’s c**p … look at these beautiful pictures. I loved it. I think it makes it more of an event … it has more spark,” Underwood said.

“I thought it was absolutely fantastic. This reminded me of the Sydney Olympics, and then you get the night and it elevates to some sort of Super Bowl level, which is not just a game, but you get an event.”

But cricket journalist Gideon Haigh agreed with Aly, calling the Grand Final “total c**p”.

Haigh particularly disliked the pre-match entertainment, headlined by Australian indie bands DMA’S and Cub Sport.

“The pre-match entertainment! Those awful bloody dirges,” Haigh moaned.

Veteran AFL reporter Caroline Wilson was also not a fan of the time change, saying: “Clearly the game was one for the ages, but the night Grand Finals should not be played going forward.

“Waleed’s nailed it. It’s a game, not an event, how many traditions are we going to lose under this administration … how many traditions will be get rid of?

“I couldn’t cop it if we lose the day of the grand final, I just think that is something unique to our game, and we sell out if we change it.”

Cricket journalist Adam Collins tweeted: “We don’t need it to be dark for the Grand Final to be the best event going. Also, the music after goals has to go — adds nothing, detracts from the natural sound a massive crowd makes when they’re invested in every moment. Never again.”

Meanwhile, Channel 9 sports presenter Tony Jones backflipped on his previous assertions, saying the Grand Final should remain an afternoon event in the future.

“I’ve always been an advocate for the night Grand Final. Based on what I saw last night, now I know it wasn’t the MCG, but I’m saying let’s stick to the day Grand Final,” Jones said on Channel 9’s AFL Sunday Footy Show.

“To me, it didn’t have the Grand Final feel holus-bolus. Now again, that’s Gabba versus MCG, but it was too long to wait through the game for this marquee match.

“I worry about the state of some people in Melbourne once the game actually rolls around. To me, it just didn’t grab me in the Grand Final sense.

Jones also said the pre-match entertainment “bombed”, saying the bands should not have performed so many dreary cover songs.

“Who are these people? I know that I’m 57, I get that. I know they’re very popular in the music scene at festivals and indie groups and that sort of stuff,” Jones said.

“But if you’re going to wheel them out, at least do something uplifting. Give us something uplifting. Give us something uplifting, not that.

“To me, that didn’t get you in the mood for a Grand Final.”

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd agreed. “I think it made me realise just how special day Grand Finals are,” he said.

“I don’t think there was anything that happened last night that makes me want to take the game away from being a day Grand Final.”
