Peter Overton's heartfelt advice on Father's Day

In the delightful chronicles of the Overton family, one thing has become abundantly clear: Peter Overton absolutely adored witnessing the close bond between his father, John, and his daughters, Allegra and Giselle. It was a sight that not only warmed his heart, but reassured him that the family ties would endure through generations.

Overton has often reflected on his father’s age – nearly 87 – and marvelled at how John and his mother still live in the family home where Peter himself grew up. Even at 58, Peter couldn't help but beam with pride when talking about his parents. “They loved all their grandchildren,” he told NineNews, “but Allegra and Giselle were the youngest, and they talked to them every day.”

This Father's Day just gone, however, held special significance. The family hadn’t seen each other "for a while", and Peter knew it was high time they rectified that. The plan? A simple yet heartwarming meal of barbecue chickens and salad, enjoyed together at his parents' home. "We're going to buy barbecue chickens and salad and go over and sit with them," Peter had said in the days leading up to Father's Day, “because he's been an amazing mentor and friend and dad to me. He's an extraordinary, extraordinary human."

As Peter reminisced, he couldn’t help but hope that his daughters would hold him in similar regard. “I hope my girls see that in me,” he said, “and I’m sure they do.” Peter has always been a hands-on dad, always encouraging open communication and making sure Allegra and Giselle know they can talk to him and his wife Jess Rowe about anything without fear of judgment.

Peter has often recalled how his father had been a great communicator, even with the demands of his career as a professor of paediatric anaesthesia for 40 years. Peter remembered the early mornings when, after a night out, he and his siblings would cross paths with their father in the backyard. “Where are you going, Dad?” they’d ask, only to hear about some emergency with sick kids being flown in from Dubbo. Despite his busy job, John had never taken his eye off his children.

Now, as a father of two daughters, Peter has found himself similarly devoted. He's currently been teaching his eldest, Allegra, how to drive. “She’s got about 50 hours down,” he brags, though not without a hint of stress: “I’ve ripped out the grab handles in the car from stress,” he admits, only half-jokingly. It's all part of life’s passage; the gradual letting go as children navigate their teenage years.

Peter understands the delicate balance of being there for his daughters while allowing them the freedom to make their own choices, and yes, even mistakes. “You’ve got to let them fly, don’t you?” he says, with a wisdom that can only come from years of parenting. He and Jess have certainly found that balance, even as they continue to support their daughters through the ups and downs of school and teenage relationships.

And while there are many special memories the close-knit family have shared, Peter often recalls the days when his daughters were born as the most precious. “I remember both of them vividly,” he says, describing how he could still feel the weight of newborn Allegra in his hands as he proclaimed, “It’s a girl!” And with Giselle, born via emergency cesarean, he cherished the moment he held her skin-to-skin while Jess was tended to.

These moments, etched forever in his heart, are Peter’s best memories by a million. So, when asked what advice he’d give to new dads, Peter kept it simple: “Rely on your instincts”.

And with that, the legacy of love, devotion and the occasional heart-pounding driving lesson continues in the Overton family, one barbecue chicken at a time.

Images: Instagram

Jess Rowe has clapped back at a magazine that claims her marriage to Peter Overton is in "crisis".

The presenter made the "shocking" discovery on the front page of a magazine while walking through the shopping centre, and took to her TikTok account to debunk the wild claims.

The cover of the Woman's Day mag shows paparazzi photos of the couple looking distressed alongside the title: Pete and Jess in Crisis: Why She’s Standing By Him.

“Look at what I learned when I was at the supermarket checkout today,” Rowe said in the opening of the facetious video, which has been viewed more than 40,000 times.

“I was staring back at myself on the front of the magazine … According to the magazine, we are in crisis. I had to open the magazine to discover why I’m standing by Petey – let me tell you why.”

She continued to joke about the “flattering photo” that the tabloid used, where she describes herself as “suitably puffy underneath the eyes”, saying pointedly, “I’m looking like I am in crisis."

She then shows a photo of the full cover story, titled: Pete and Jess: This Won’t Break Us.

“What is going to break us?” Rowe posed. “It turns out, there’s this article all about possible changes to the news that really aren’t based on anything, just some anonymous quotes.”

At the video’s conclusion, she read the final quote provided in the “nonsensical article”.

“‘But whatever happens they’ll come through it all stronger than ever – that’s just the way they are’,” Rowe quoted. “Oh phew, I was reassured reading that standing at the supermarket line that Petey and I, we’re going to come through it. We’re not in crisis.”

The video racked up thousands of likes and comments, with fans of Rowe also condemning the gossip tabloid.

“Sometimes you need a magazine to tell you how you’re feeling,” one commenter quipped.

“It’s like work gossip,” another said. “I generally need to ask people what is going on in my life that I don’t know is happening.”

Peter Overton's adorable photo recreation with his daughters

In the whirlwind world of jet-setting journalists, where passport stamps act as badges of honour, it's easy to become a connoisseur of the globe. Peter Overton, the esteemed newsreader (and now, it would seem, traveller extraordinaire!) knows this all too well.

With a career spanning nearly a decade at 60 Minutes, he's seen more corners of the earth than your average compass. From the bustling streets of New York to the serene landscapes of Namibia, his adventures have been the stuff of envy for many.

But hold onto your boarding passes, folks, because Overton recently embarked on a journey of a different kind – one that involved less hard-hitting reporting and more ice skating in Central Park. Yes, you guessed it; he took a trip with his two teenage daughters, Allegra and Giselle, and wife, TV host Jessica Rowe! And yes indeed, it was a whirlwind of teenage thrills and dad jokes.

Their escapade took them to the illustrious cities of New York, London and Paris – a trifecta of cultural richness and Instagram-worthy moments. While Overton might have thought he had seen it all, experiencing these iconic cities through the eyes of his daughters brought a whole new dimension to his travels. Forget about uncovering hard-hitting news stories; the real scoop was watching his daughters' faces light up as they devoured their first New York slice or twirled around on the ice in Central Park.

As Overton told 9Travel, "Every day was a highlight because every day the kids realised what a thrill this was, and they thanked us every day, which just made it so worthwhile." Ah, the joys of teenage gratitude!

Now, you might think that being a household name would automatically mean flying first class and staying in penthouse suites. But fear not, frugal travellers, because the Overton-Rowe clan knows how to stretch a dollar. Opting for apartments over hotel rooms, they were able to enjoy the comforts of home away from home without breaking the bank. (Take note, budget-conscious travellers, because this is how you do luxury on a shoestring budget.)

And let's not forget about dear old dad's role in all of this. While Jessica handles the packing (because let's face it, dads and folding clothes don't exactly mix), it's Overton who takes the reins when it comes to trip planning and booking. "I'm useless," he confesses with a chuckle. But hey, at least he's honest about it.

But the adventure didn't stop at the bright lights of the big cities; they even made a pit stop in Winchester, England, where Overton himself was born. Talk about a blast from the past – in an adorable Overton moment, they recreated a family photo at the village sign, proving that no matter how far you roam, there's always a piece of home to hold onto.

As for future travels, Overton has his sights set on exploring more of his home turf in Australia. Forget luxury train rides in Europe; he's all about road tripping through the Riverina with his girls. And who can blame him? With its picturesque landscapes and charming towns, it's the perfect backdrop for some good old-fashioned family bonding.

So, here's to Peter Overton, the intrepid newsreader turned family travel guru. May your adventures continue to be filled with teenage thrills, dad jokes and plenty of passport stamps. And remember, no matter where life takes you, there's always room for one more family photo by the village sign.

Images: 9Travel

Jess Rowe reveals the sneaky way she impressed Peter Overton

Jess Rowe has shared the sneaky way she impressed her now-husband Peter Overton when they first met.

The presenter and self-professed “crap housewife” sat down with Today Extra to talk about her new cookbook in collaboration with the Australian Women's Weekly, Everyday Not-So-Crap Family Meals, when she shared the lengths she went to in order impress the 9News presenter when they first started dating.

"This was before I owned my crap housewife title, when I felt I had to be perfect," Jess said.

"I think for some of us we feel like we have to have it all together all the time, so Pete was having a bit of a work dinner and he wanted to impress his 60 Minutes colleagues.”

"So they came around to dinner and I thought 'what am I going to cook? I can't just serve up spag bol for something completely different.'"

Rather than setting an unreasonable challenge for herself, Jess enlisted the help of her sister, a qualified chef, for the evening.

"She cooked up a tagine, I still don't know what that is, but she made it for me with all of these other things," she said.

"It was so delicious, but the problem was everyone thought it was so wonderful, they wanted the recipe."

Jessica managed to fudge her way along telling them "a bit of this, a bit of that" when they asked what was in the meal, but they were persistent and really wanted to know how she did it.

"I had to get my sister to email me the recipe the next day and I forwarded it on," she said.

Now, after 19 years of marriage, the mother-of-two has improved slightly in the kitchen: enough to release Everyday Not-So-Crap Family Meals.

"What's happened to Australia?": Why Karl ripped into "woke" councils

Karl Stefanovic has once again let rip at “woke” neighbours and local councils, this time over one that forced a Queensland mum to remove a basketball hoop off a nature strip alongside her own driveway.

Mandy Overton from the Gold Coast was threatened with a $750 fine if she did not get rid of the basketball hoop from in front of her house.

Furious neighbours complained to the local council about Ms Overton’s children playing basketball in their own front yard, for allowing the ball to bounce on the road and for being too noisy.

“I got a knock at my door on Tuesday. The council officer came to the house and just basically said, if you don't move your basketball hoop by Friday, you will get $750 fine,' the mother told The Today Show co-host.

“Not only that, but she also mentioned too many kids playing with my basketball hoop. I don't think that's a problem. Kids being kids and playing.

“Also, they were saying if an accident would happen it would be on their call because it's on their land. They're just playing. I don't see what is the problem. They're getting out. Getting off iPads. Getting sociable with all the kids.”

A furious Karl took aim at the local council and the neighbours who filed the complaints, saying the kids should be allowed to be kids.

“Can I say something here? This is not politically correct at all. I don't know what has happened to Australia,” he said.

“We have people around in our neighbourhood now who are just whingers and whiners.

“They have nothing better to do with their day than complain to the local council, who are so woke and left that it passes on to us in the form of complaints and blah, blah, blah, I'm just sick of it.

“What's happened to Australia? You can't have a basketball hoop on the median strip?

‘I'm sick of it. I don't know what has happened to this great country. Everyone whines now.

‘It's local councils who are awful. Just fix the potholes, bros, as Kyrgios would say. Just do council stuff. Don't get in our lives.”

Images: Today Show

"He should never be released": Ben Fordham speaks out against killer's parole

The heartbroken parents whose teenage daughter was brutally killed by a 16-year-old boy have spoken about her killer potentially being released on parole.

Tania Burgess was on her way home from school on the Central Coast on July 19, 2005 when a 16-year-old boy followed and stabbed her 48 times before running off.

The school girl named her killer in her dying moments, who was then found and sentenced to 22 years in prison, with a non-parole period of 17 years. The sentence was appealed and reduced by four years.

The killer, known only as DL because he was a minor at the time of the murder, has been eligible for parole since 2018 and this is his last chance of it being granted.

Tania’s parents Mandy and Chris spoke to 2GB’s Ben Fordham saying DL’s release would be a “shock”.

“It’s hard to comprehend that, first of all, DL has never really admitted any kind of remorse. And yet his time is up. He may be set free,” Mandy said.

“He will never own the crime that he did. He virtually is unnamed as DL. (He’ll) just wipe 17 years off and start a new life, yet we lost our daughter.”

Fordham said the community would “be in danger from this person” as Mandy reflected on what her daughter’s life may have been.

“You can only dream what kind of life she might have had,” she continued.

“She was such a beautiful, caring, loving teenager. She could have maybe become a nurse, or some kind of health community worker. It’s hard to say. She loved her ballet. She might have been a ballerina.

“You can only let your imagination run really wild. But she was taken away from us. She was just a girl. She was just starting to bloom at 15. She was stolen.

“I try to block out those horrible images of what we saw that day, and remember Tania for who she was. Not what we saw, not what he did, but for what she was at the time. She was a beautiful, loving, caring girl, just starting her life.”

“The reality is that he should never be released,” Fordham responded.

DL’s case has two options - either he is granted supervised parole, or he can walk free at the end of his sentence without supervision.

Mandy said it would probably be better that DL be monitored to see what he’s like in public saying it would be “frightening” to know if he was out there not being supervised.

Images: Nine News

Peter Overton’s “insult” to Miranda Kerr

Peter Overton has made a hilarious mistake when describing Australian model Miranda Kerr.

The Nine News anchor was speaking about Kerr and her husband, Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel, who paid the entire debt for 285 graduates at an art college in Los Angeles.

When referring to Kerr, the veteran journalist said “Australian super mole” instead of “Australian supermodel”.

Overton, 56, immediately noticed his slip of the tongue and corrected himself during the bulletin.

The term “mole” or “moll” is an insulting word to describe a prostitute.

Viewers picked up on Overton’s mistake and laughed about it online.

“OMG did @PeterOverton just say what I thought he did! LOL #SuperMoll Miranda Kerr? Ooooopsss…” one person wrote.

“@9NewsSyd did Peter Overton just call Miranda Kerr a super mole ? lol Freudian slip,” another commented.

“He’s been talking to Orlando Bloom,” another wrote in reference to Kerr’s ex husband.

News of Kerr and Spiegel paying off the debt of 285 art students at Otis College of Art occurred during their graduation.

“We know that for most of you and your families, the shared burden of student debt is a heavy price that you paid for an exceptional Otis College education,” college president Charles Hirschhorn said.

“We understand that this debt can compromise your future and limit your creative ambitions. We do not want to see this happen.

“We are pleased to announce today that Evan and Miranda, through their Spiegel Family Fund, have made the largest single gift in the history of Otis College.

“Their gift will enable you to pay your student loans.”

Image: Nine News/Getty

"I was ready to quit": Jess Rowe and Peter Overton's big revelations

Jess Rowe and her husband Peter Overton left no secret untold on the latest episode of her podcast The Jess Rowe Big Talk Show.

The popular TV personalities tied the knot in 2004 and share two daughters Allegra, 15, and Giselle, 12.

On her podcast, the pair spoke for 52 minutes about being “desperate” to be parents, IVF, depression and their respective careers.

Suffering from polycystic ovaries (PCOS), a condition that affects a woman’s fertility, Jess and Peter were not able to fall pregnant easily and had to resort to IVF.

"I think we did four attempts and it wasn't easy," Peter revealed on the podcast.

"Going through IVF there would be times you'd feel hopeless and your spirits would be so low because you think this is never going to happen for us and both of us desperately wanted to be parents,” Jess added.

After three unsuccessful rounds, Jess fell pregnant and gave birth to their daughter Allegra in 2007 while their second daughter Giselle was conceived naturally.

However, it was too overwhelming for Jess who struggled with post-natal depression after Allegra’s birth.

"I felt like a failure when I had postnatal depression. I was so ashamed. I felt I had to hide it from you and I had to hide it from everyone because I felt like I was letting our brand-new family down,” she revealed.

Peter’s response was phenomenal. He stood by his wife and took her to the doctors and a psychiatrist, who eventually prescribed her anti-depressants.

Before falling pregnant, Jess was contemplating leaving her job as co-host of The Today Show alongside Karl Stefanovic.

It even reached the point that Peter was ready to quit the same network over the way his wife was being treated.

"I was ready to quit Channel Nine because I was so upset at the way you were treated. You said to me, 'We've got a mortgage to pay buster, don't make a stupid decision’,” he said.

Jess, however, spoke some sense into him saying it would be a “disaster” if they both quit their jobs.

The network at one point also offered the couple the opportunity to host the show together which was out of the question.

"I remember them also saying, 'Oh, maybe you and Jessica could host the show together?' I said, 'You're kidding me? You're going to ruin two careers, ruin a marriage and ruin a program in one hit? No thank you,'" Peter recalled.

Despite the challenges, both Jess and Peter agree that it brought them closer and made them stronger.

"You've really brought me out as a person. When I met you, I think my world was very narrow, and then I entered your orbit and, holy smoke, it was different," Peter said.

Image: Instagram

But when we got to the school gate, she turned around and said 'I love you Dad' and gave me a real hug," the Nine News journalist said.

"And that's a 15 year old going into year nine. So last night I got home from work I said 'that takes real character Allegra, in front of your friends at 15 to just say I love you dad and give me a hug and a kiss'. So that made my week."

Last week, Peter's wife Jess Rowe told Now To Love she was feeling anxious about sending bother daughter, Allegra and 11-year-old Giselle, back to school after two years of on-and -off remote learning.

"What I'm excited about, and a little bit nervous too on their behalf, is getting them back into that school environment," the mum-of-two shared.

"For so many kids it has been so difficult, they've adapted so much … but they've really missed that connection, and there's nothing quite like learning in classroom face to face."

As Giselle starts her high school career, Jess said her and Pete are excited for their daughter's new journey.

"That's a massive thing for her and for us. And I know she's ready, but she is anxious, she's got the butterflies," Jess said.

The bizarre item Jessica Rowe saved from burning car

Jessica Rowe and her daughter Allegra were lucky to escape unharmed after their car burst into flames in Sydney on Thursday afternoon.

Rowe was outside her daughter's school when her Volvo suddenly burst into flames on a major road, New South Head Road.

A school bus driver named Miev initially saw smoke "billowing" from underneath the Volvo XC 60 and "jumped out of his bus" to alert Rowe, urging her to get out of the vehicle.

Rowe and Allegra both fled and within minutes the car was completely engulfed in flames.

“Jess was saying to me earlier that if the school bus driver hadn’t jumped out of his bus and run over to Jess’ car and told them to get out right now it could have been a much more serious outcome,” Rowe’s manager, David Wilson, told news.com.au.

“The whole family is so very grateful to him for his quick action and courage. Approaching a car that was clearly in serious trouble meant he was also at risk of putting himself in harms way, and that’s amazing.”

Speaking about the incident this morning on KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O, Rowe revealed the bizarre item that she managed to grab from the vehicle before it went up in flames.

“I do like a costume … so I had a cat head in the boot,” Rowe told the radio duo. “Sometimes I like to embarrass my children. I pick them up and I put the cat head on. Luckily I could rescue that from the boot.”

Rowe's husband Peter Overton was not happy when she told him she managed to grab the cat head costume.

“He said to me last night, ‘pussycat, that is not funny. Put it in the bin. You’re not keeping that,’” Rowe said.

Rowe took to Instagram last night to thank the kind school bus driver, Mev, who got us out of the car, called the fire brigade, cleared the road and then stayed to drive us home.”

She also thanked the police and paramedics and “the mums & dads who stopped to help”.

“We love you,” she wrote.

Magistrate slams Victorian anti-masker Mandy Crerar

A Victorian magistrate has made his feelings about anti-masker Mandy Crerar who claimed that law's don't apply to her, explaining that the coronavirus doesn't care if she is a "sovereign citizen".

Mandy Crerar allegedly coughed and yelled at staff in a cafe after they refused to serve her for not wearing a mask on August 11th.

The 58-year-old is also accused of resisting police officers who were called to the cafe. She has been charged with affray and failure to comply with the chief health officer's directions.

“We’re in the grips of a pandemic which is killing people every day. It’s real,” Frankston magistrate Tim Gattuso told the woman.

“It doesn’t distinguish between those who claim to be sovereign citizens and those who don’t.”

Prosecutors were worried about Crerar who wore a face shield and a blue gown as they believed she was only doing so to do bail.

“She has refused to wear a mask up until today,” prosecutor Glenn Horman said.

He said she was only wearing her shield to “endeavour” to get out of custody and also told the court the anti-masker refused to undergo a coronavirus test.

The hearing was postponed after Crerar asked to speak to her lawyer Christopher Terry.

“Yes I wish to object,” she told the court. It related to her concerns about proposed bail conditions.

The court was told during the hearing that the owner of the cafe offered Crerar a mask, but she refused to wear it.

The anti-masker started to “scream at the top of her voice that she was a sovereign citizen” and started to cough on the victim who was afraid for her safety, a police summary reads.

But when police arrived, Ms Crerar refused to give them her name and address and when asked why she wasn’t wearing a mask started to scream “rape, rape” at the officers.

Police allege she was “hysterical and irrational”.

Prison officers confirmed that she has refused to wear a mask, but her lawyer denied this claim at an earlier hearing, saying Crerar would comply with directions if released on bail.

She has since been released on bail under strict conditions, including wearing a mask or shield when leaving her home, sticking to a curfew, paying a $5,000 security deposit and undergoing an inpatient assessment.

She will not be released until early on Friday.
