Michael Jackson's staggering debt revealed

Michael Jackson was reportedly drowning in massive debt at the time of his death in 2009.

According to newly released court documents, the late King of Pop owed more than $500 million ($747.05 million AUD) to more than 65 creditors just before he passed.

Jackson had “more than half a dozen lawsuits pending worldwide” and more than “65 creditors’ claims were filed in the estate spawning additional lawsuits, of which several resulted in litigation,” the documents state.

According to the documents, that were filed in a Los Angeles court on June 21st, the executors of Jackson's will were able to “renegotiate and restructure financing arrangements,” including a lucrative deal with Sony over rights he had to music publishing for several artists, at “substantially reduced interest rates” to avoid further losses and rectify the debts.

The $750 million ($1.120 billion AUD) agreement allowed Sony to acquire Sony/ATV, which held the rights to almost 3 million famous songs from artists including John Lennon and Paul McCartney, David Bowie and Taylor Swift.

Despite settling the major agreement with the record label, the Jackson estate still reportedly owes a significant amount of money as “there remain challenging business, tax and legal issues that the executers and their counsel continue to deal with.”

The filing reportedly also notes a pending final decision on a victory in a 2021 court battle with the IRS.

Jackson’s three children, Prince, 27, Paris, 26, and Bigi Jackson, 22 — who are the beneficiaries of his estate — have been blocked from receiving money from their trust until the IRS dispute has been settled.

A spokesperson for the estate clarified, “The estate has a very cooperative relationship with Michael’s children and whenever they need anything, the estate works with them to ensure that they are very well taken care of, just as Michael would have wanted.”

The Los Angeles Times previously reported that Michael accrued so much debt largely in part because of his excessive spending habits, which were aired during his 2003 interview with Martin Bashir that laid bare his extravagant spending.

Aussie cruising fanatics share their top cruise tips

An Aussie couple who are dedicated to cruising have shared their top tips to keep in mind before setting sail.

Marty and Jessica Ansen are about to set off on their 130th cruise and have made headlines around the world for their devotion to spending most of their lives at sea.

Together they have sailed roughly 770,000 nautical miles over more than 2,300 days on board, which equates to more than six years spent at sea.

The Brisbane grandparents, both 77, have just headed off on their tenth trip around the globe, which is also their 52nd consecutive cruise adventure.

During all their time spent at seas, the Ansens have learned a thing or two about life onboard, and have shared their top ten tips to make time on a cruise ship as smooth sailing as possible.

Their number one tip for cruise travellers is to take a backup credit or debit card, as Marty told 9Travel, "Replacing a lost or stolen card while overseas is not for the fainthearted."

The Ansens recommend making a clear and legible copy of your passport, as consulates find it a lot easier if you can provide a copy ready to go when you disembark.

After all their years at sea, Marty and Jessica are pro-packers, and recommend wearing all your heaviest clothing when you check in to better adhere to a strict weight limit.

"Jessica and I have one piece of luggage, usually under 20kg," Marty said.

"We also each have one bag of hand luggage. Going on board, regardless of weather, I wear my heaviest clothing."

When it comes to packing, they also advise leaving your toiletries at home.

"Leave consumables like shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and any creams and potions at home as Princess (cruise line) provides basic toiletries and anything you do need can be bought at the first port," Marty said.

Marty and Jessica also recommend packing all your essentials in your hand luggage, as it can often take a while for your checked bags to arrive in your cruise ship cabin.

"Place all jewellery, passports, visas, medication money and credit/debit cards in your hand luggage for easy retrieval," Marty said.

Marty said one thing every traveller must check before setting sail is what electrical connection is used onboard.

"Check what electrical connection is used onboard and have the right adapter ready to charge your devices,' Marty said.

Many ships have American and European plug points, while newer ones may have USB connections too.

When it comes to bringing medications, the Ansens said you should always bring extras, as well as the required paperwork.

"As an extra precaution carry copies of scripts so that if you do run out or lose your medications it will be easier to prove what you need to overseas pharmacies or doctors," Marty said.

Lastly, like any overseas adventure, the Ansens said it is important to always have travel insurance, and to make copies of your policy.

Jackson Warne speaks for the first time on the moment he found out about his father's death

Jackson Warne has opened up for the first time about the life-changing moment he found out about his father's untimely death.

Jackson was 22-years-old when his father, famous Aussie cricketer Shane Warne, passed away of a heart attack while holidaying in Thailand in March 2022.

Now, for the first time, Jackson has recalled the moment he and his family found out abut the devastating news.

Speaking with SAS Australia chief instructor Ant Middleton on the show's podcast ahead of the show's anticipated finale, Jackson spoke candidly about receiving the life-changing phone call.

Middleton asked Jackson, who was a contestant on SAS three years ago, “Do you remember where you were when you got the news?”

Jackson said, “Definitely, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to probably forget where I was or what I was doing. Because all you get is a phone call. And then when you hang up the phone call, your life that you’ve been living, your entire life, everything you ever knew sort of was like this, just gets whooshed, just completely flipped upside down."

“You have all these thoughts, and you let the tears out, that you just sort of sit in silence. Like we, I was with my girlfriend, my sister, Brooke, and her partner, and then my mum. And we just got to call. Hung up the phone and we just sat in silence for hours."

While going through the shock and devastation of finding out about his father's death, Jackson had a profound dream about his late dad, as he felt he was sending him a message.

He began, "I can tell you about a dream that might sound bizarre, but it would have been maybe two weeks, or two-and-a-half weeks after dad passed, and I was driving my car. He was driving his car. And we used to sort not race, we used to just drive next to each other and, you know, race a little bit."

“But he was always the better driver in the better car. So (he) always beat me all the time, all the time. And in this dream I had, I was driving my car, he was driving his car, we’re both looking each other left and right and driving and driving.

“And then all of a sudden our cars sort of, they sort of merged, and I was in the driver’s seat of his car. And then I looked to my left, and he wasn’t there. And then I sort of woke up and I can really vividly remember that dream."

“Everything about it, I can remember. And I sort of looked at that as he was sort of giving me the permission to be in charge. Now he’s like, ‘Jackson, I’m giving you the driver’s seat. You’re the one that’s, you know, going to be making the tough decisions. Now you’re the one that has to step up for the family. I’m not here anymore, you have to be (the one)‘."

Jackson also shared the reason he is finally speaking out about his father, saying, “To keep someone’s memory alive, you have to keep talking about them."

Oscar-winning politician Glenda Jackson passes away at 87

Two-time Academy Award-winning performer-turned-politician Glenda Jackson has passed away at 87 years old.

The news was confirmed by Jackson’s agent, Lionel Larner, who announced that she had died at home in London after a short illness. Larner also noted that Jackson had “recently completed filming The Great Escaper in which she co-starred with Michael Caine.”

And 90-year-old Caine had only kind words to say of his co-star, sharing that she was “one of our greatest movie actresses. I shall miss her.”

Jackson was born into a working-class family in northwest England, and laid the groundwork for her career in the arts when she won a spot at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Her work as an actress was successful, with Jackson taking home her first Academy Award for Best Actress in 1971 and her second in 1974 - for Women in Love and A Touch of Class respectively.

Jackson also held two Emmy Award wins, both for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in the series Elizabeth R. She wasn’t to be stopped there, either, with the star also taking home a Tony Award in 2018 for her performance in Three Tall Women.

But after more than three decades in the arts, Jackson chose a different path for herself, branching into the world of politics, fuelled by her frustration for the working classes at the hands of then-British Conservative prime minister Margaret Thatcher between 1979 and 1990.

And at 55 years old, in 1992, Jackson secured a seat in parliament. As she said at the time, “we must work for the poor, the homeless, the unemployed, the frail, the sick.”

Jackson spent 23 years with the Labour Party, and even served as a minister for transport in Tony Blair’s first government in 1997. However, the two seemed to find themselves on opposing sides when it came to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, with Jackson admitting that the decisions made left her feeling “deeply, deeply ashamed.

"The victims will be as they always are, women, children, the elderly.”

After leaving politics in 2015, Jackson chose to return to performing, where she went on to enjoy some of the most acclaimed roles of her entire career.

And for all of her passion and success, Jackson is remembered fondly by her loved ones - those who knew her beyond her work, and those who supported her for it - who flocked to social media to pay tribute.

“Glenda Jackson was both the best actress of our generation and an incredibly principled passionate and eloquent advocate of social justice as an MP and as a government minister. I will remember her as a friend whom I admired greatly and what she achieved will never be forgotten,” former-prime minister for the United Kingdom, Gordon Brown, wrote.

“Very sad to hear of the passing of Glenda Jackson. An acclaimed actress, a formidable politician and an inspirational woman to so many of us in the Labour Party,” British politician Angela Rayner said. “My thoughts are with her family, friends and many others who loved her.”

“Devastated to hear that my predecessor Glenda Jackson has died. A formidable politician, an amazing actress and a very supportive mentor to me. Hampstead and Kilburn will miss you Glenda,” friend and fellow politician Tulip Siddiq said.

And, as her friends and fans the Muppets wrote, “here’s to Glenda Jackson, legendary actress and scourge of the Seven Seas! In her unforgettable episode of The Muppet Show, she and her merry band of plundering pirates turned our theatre into a ship and set out to sea.

“We’ll always treasure the time we spent with you, Glenda.”

Here’s to Glenda Jackson, legendary actress and scourge of the Seven Seas! “There was so much more for her to achieve”: Selfless mum remembered for her heroic save

Mother and pioneer for the deaf community Leonie Jackson was enjoying time at the beach with her children when their day - and their lives - took a devastating turn for the worst.

When Leonie’s 10-year-old son, Byron, got caught in a rip at Congo Beach, the brave woman dove into the dangerous conditions to save him. She was successful in keeping his head above the water, but the same couldn’t be said for her.

The pair were brought to the shore by a surfer who was nearby, and CPR was performed on Leonie by paramedics at the scene. Tragically, they were unable to revive the 50-year-old.

A memorial service was held at the beach, with her loved ones paying tribute to her remarkable life and dedicated work for the deaf community. Leonie is survived by her two children: 12-year-old Byron and 15-year-old Tobian.

"It's just been shattering," Tony Abrahams told ABC. “It's just one of those events that completely upends lives and communities."

According to Tony, Leonie was only in the area to celebrate her 50th birthday for a few days with her friends.

“I’d never seen her happier than on the day she died,” he said. “Here is this beautiful place where we shared such a wonderful celebration. It's also the scene of the ultimate sacrifice of a mother swimming out and saving her son and keeping him afloat for several minutes that allowed him to get his breath and to be saved."

Alexander Jones - Leonie’s close friend and the father of her children - had similar words to share to the AAP (through an Auslan interpreter), explaining that ““Leonie made that decision because of her love for her children.

“She had to do that. There was no other choice to make.”

Leonie’s heroism has since been recognised, with the brave mother being awarded a posthumous medal for her actions that fateful day.

The awards are distributed each year to those who have demonstrated brave conduct, and recognise members of the community who face danger in pursuit of helping others. Leonie was one of 11 to receive a medal for her bravery, and was announced as a recipient by Governor-General David Hurley.

"The courage they showed is matched by their selflessness and they deserve our respect, gratitude and recognition,” Hurley said of the recipients.

“For the loved ones of those no longer with us - I hope that the posthumous acknowledgement of their bravery brings comfort. Their stories will not be forgotten.”

“It’s heartwarming to know that her act is recognised but I have to say, she would have gotten many more medals if she was still here,” Alexander admitted.

“There was so much more for her to achieve.”

Leonie had spent years advocating for the deaf community, dedicating her life to the fight for equality in education for deaf children, even establishing Australia’s very bilingual program for deaf and hearing children alike.

As Alexander explained, “Leonie was selfless her whole life.”

“She was such an impressive human being. She was creative. She was full of ideas. She was a trailblazer.”

Images: Facebook

“Never be forgotten”: Uncle of NRL star drowns while saving swimmers

The man who died, Talitiga Taupau, was trying to save the lives of two others caught in a dangerous rip with him.

The father-of-six entered the rip at Cronulla’s Shelly Beach on Saturday afternoon. One swimmer made it back to the beach, while Talitiga and one other were pulled unconscious from the water.

Talitiga died at the scene, while the second unconscious man was revived and taken to St George Hospital in a critical condition after allegedly being underwater for three minutes. The swimmer who returned to shore was reported to be in a stable condition and receiving further treatment.

Talitiga’s death brings the state’s summer drowning toll to 14 (with the count commencing on December 1).

The 44-year-old has been identified as the uncle of Brisbane Broncos player Martin “Marty” Taupau.

“It's really sad that this has happened but he will never be forgotten for his actions," Marty told 9News of his uncle’s passing. Marty was reportedly driving to Brisbane with his family for training with his team when he heard the news.

“There’s just so much happening,” he added, “so much to process.”

Talitiga and the second man were pulled from the water by nearby lifeguards. Joel Wiseman, director of lifesaving for Surf Life Saving NSW, stressed the strain on volunteer lifesavers across the state in the wake of the recent drownings, including the tragedy at Shelly Beach on the weekend.

“We are experiencing one of our busiest summers ever with huge rescue numbers,” Wiseman stated, “and our volunteers have put in a massive effort to try to keep people safe along the coast.

"Despite the growing drowning toll, volunteers and lifeguards should be very proud of what they've achieved so far this summer. There are a combination of factors making this summer so deadly, including people taking risks, alcohol consumption, and crowded beaches which can lead beachgoers to seek out unfamiliar and unpatrolled locations.

"Rip currents remain the number one coastal hazard and the 14 coastal drowning deaths this summer have all occurred at unpatrolled locations."

An investigation is underway into the latest drowning, with Sutherland Shire police set to prepare a report for the coroner.

Talitiga Taupau is being remembered as a hero for his actions, with tributes flowing for his family.

Marty Taupau posted one such tribute to his Instagram, sharing 9News’ segment on his uncle’s story with the caption “Manuia lau malaga uncle“ (Have a good trip uncle) and the hashtag “hero”.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; "Health is wealth": How Warnie's son has dealt with the loss of his father

Michael Jackson songs pulled from Youtube over authenticity claims

Three songs from Michael Jackson’s posthumous 2010 album Michael have been pulled from online streaming services amid allegations the king of pop didn’t actually sing them.

The songs in question - Monster, Breaking News, and Keep Your Head Up - are no longer available to buy or stream on global music services.

The tracks have been the subject of an ongoing lawsuit against Sony Music and Jackson’s estate, alleging that Jackson did not sing them.

In 2014, a fan of the late musician filed a lawsuit against Sony and the estate over the three songs for violation of consumer laws, unfair competition and fraud.

Sony and the estate were cleared from the case in 2018 and its appeal in 2020, and the suit is currently in the California Supreme Court.

Prior to the album’s release, doubts were raised by Jackson’s family members whether songs were performed by the Grammy-winner.

According to The Guardian, his mother Katherine claimed in 2010 that “some of the tracks on the album are fake”.

The musician’s sister, LaToya, told TMZ, “It doesn’t sound like him”.

Michael’s nephew Taryll tweeted at the time, “I KNOW my Uncle’s voice, and something’s seriously wrong when you have immediate FAMILY saying it’s not him.”

Despite the allegations, a spokesperson from Jackson’s website recently said the tracks being pulled “had nothing to do with their authenticity”.

“The Estate and Sony Music believe the continuing conversation about the tracks is distracting the fan community and casual Michael Jackson listeners from focusing their attention where it should be — on Michael’s legendary and deep music catalog [sic],” the Jackson website spokesperson said.

Teenage "speed camera warrior" confronted by grouchy "Karen"

Teenage "speed camera warrior" Beau Jackson has been confronted by a disgruntled middle-aged woman as he warned motorists of an upcoming speed camera.

The Central Coast local has dedicated his free time to alerting drivers to hidden speed cameras that can often result in hefty fines.

While parked on the side of the road with a sign bringing attention to the sneaky cameras, thankful motorists often show their appreciation to Beau by honking their horn.

Despite his noble cause, the 17-year-old had his first unpleasant experience with a local, and shared the confrontation on social media.

Beau filmed the woman, who he dubbed 'Karen' walking away and said from behind the camera, "This lady tried getting me by complaining about the honks - tried getting a photo of my number plate."

"It's the first Karen interaction," he laughed, as another passer-by honked their horn.

"She tried to take a photo of my number plate - I'm legally parked, there's nothing she can do about it."

When speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Beau explained the woman lived close to where he was parked, and got sick and tired of the honking noise.

"She asked me to move because she was sick of the honking," he said.

"I told her I was only parked there because the speed camera van was parked a few metres in front of me."

The woman was unfazed about his mission to save locals from spending hundreds of dollars in speeding tickets and continued demanding that he move.

When he continually refused, she started taking photos of Mr Jackson and his bike.

"So I started taking photos of her," he recalled.

"She backed right off when I did that, and then she starting making phone calls."

Beau was unsure of who the woman was calling, but explained that as soon as the mobile speed camera took off from the area, so did he.

"When they left, I had no reason to be there anymore so I left," he added.

As Beau's video of the encounter racked up thousands of views, many people left comments telling the teenager to ignore the haters and keep protecting the community.

"Speed camera crusader" cops highly dubious fine

Beau Jackson has been dubbed the "speed camera crusader" of the NSW Central Coast by helping motorists to avoid an "unfair" fine at the hands of sneaky speed cameras.

Beau spends his spare time on the side of main roads with a sign warning drivers of upcoming cameras, and is often thanked with a honk or wave of appreciation.

The 17-year-old had never had a fine himself, because "I just do it for the community in these tough times".

However, after A Current Affair spoke about Beau's selfless acts, he received his first fine the very next day.

But the fine isn't for what you think.

"They fined me $250 for littering. I couldn't believe it. I don't litter, all my friends and family know that," he said.

"I rang them and they said my sign and some drink cans were on the side of the road."

"But I pack up my sign and rubbish and take it home. I still have my sign, so I certainly didn't leave it on the side of the road."

Upon investigation, Beau still has his old sign and decided to contest the fine.

"I rang and asked for proof of the rubbish and they said there was no photo," he said.

"Clearly someone is upset with what I am doing, because I'm costing them revenue."

Police have previously told Beau they don't have a problem with what he is doing, as at the end of the day, he is not breaking any laws and is helping keep roads safer.

"The only person other than me there would be the speed camera operators," Beau said.

A Current Affair contacted Revenue NSW to explain the situation, as they responded that Beau is welcome to take the fine to court, which is exactly what he plans to do.

Critics slam new “sanitised” Michael Jackson musical

Theatre critics have slammed the new Michael Jackson musical that hit Broadway this year for its blatant “sanitisation” of child abuse allegations against the late popstar.

The musical, called MJ, documents Michael as he prepared for his four-continent Dangerous Tour of 1992, while also dealing with an MTV documentary crew who filmed his incessant rehearsals.

Throughout the musical, fans get glimpses into the artist's life, with flashbacks to his time in the Jackson Five and his difficult upbringing.

MJ was written by Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, and was produced by Jackson's estate with an apparent promise not to mention the young boys who accused the star of sexually harassing them, despite taking place just one year before the first allegation came out.

The musical debuted on Broadway recently, with Michael’s three children Paris, 23, Prince, 24, and Prince Michael “Bigi” Jackson, 19, in the audience.

Critics at the show’s opening night rallied against the musical, noting that the show attempts to separate the art from the artist, while conveniently ignoring the child sex abuse allegations that overshadowed Jackson's career.

Many of the reviews, including one for the New York Times, mentioned the fact that Jackson's estate were involved in producing what was essentially an 'authorised autobiography', which is why the story featured such watered-down references.

The review, written by Jesse Green, says, “In this, MJ is trying to have it both ways. It wants to blame everything sad and weird about Jackson on others… but credit him alone for his every good deed and success.”

Janet Jackson debunks decades-old rumour

Janet Jackson has debunked rumours that she had a secret child with James DeBarge in the 1980s in a preview clip for her upcoming documentary, Janet.

The rumour that the 55-year-old singer, who has a 4-year-old son Eissa with ex-husband Wissam Al Amana, had a secret child in the 1980s has followed her for years, and the performer and member of the legendary Jackson family has finally put it to bed.

Allegedly, Jackson had a child with then-husband James DeBarge, but gave it to her brother Jackie to raise. In addition, there were rumours that her nieces Brandy and Stevanna were actually her daughters because they look like her.

In a clip from the documentary, Janet said, "Back in the day they were saying that I had a child and I kept it secret. I could never keep a child away from James. How could I keep a child from their father? I could never do that, that's not right."

Jackson believes the rumours stemmed from her weight gain as a result of taking birth control pills while filming the TV show Fame, saying, "A lot of the kids thought I was pregnant, 'cause I had gained weight, and I had started taking birth control pills. And back then, you could pick up weight taking them, and that's what happened to me. So that rumour started going around."

Jackson was just 18 when she married DeBarge in 1984, and though he was a “sweet guy”, she blamed his drug use for their marriage being annulled after just one year. SHe said of their wedding night, “When we got married and came back to the hotel he said, 'OK, I'll be right back. And I'm sitting in the hotel room in Grand Rapids, Michigan by myself, just 18, and for three hours, he never came back.

“I don't know, maybe it's this person in me that wants to help people subconsciously. When it comes to relationships, somehow I'm attracted to people that use drugs."

Jackson described spending many nights searching the streets for DeBarge and trying to help by flushing his pills, but ultimately, she couldn’t give him the help he needed. In the documentary, she opens up, saying, "We would be rolling on the floor fighting for them. And that's not a life for anyone. I sit and I say, 'Were you stupid, were you dumb?' But it wasn't that. I cared so much for him, and I saw the good in him as well and I just wanted that to take precedence as opposed to this ugliness. 'Cause I knew that he needed help. But I wasn't the help that he needed.

"I was just incredibly innocent. That's the thing, is the innocence. And it's just hurtful for someone to see that and just try to take advantage of it ... It's still painful."

Image: Gabriel Olsen/FilmMagic
