"My angel": Bondi stabbing victim's emotional reunion with her saviour

A woman who was among those stabbed at Bondi Junction Westfield has finally reunited with the man who saved her life.

Liya Barko, an international student from Argentina, was one the victims who was stabbed by Joel Cauchi on April 13 during his violent attack which killed six people and injured dozens more.

A mystery man in a green t-shirt managed to save her life, but Barko wasn't able to track him down until now.

"I would like to see him again, at least give him a hug," she told 9News on Monday.

Barko reunited with her hero, identified as ex-military solider Wayne Tolver Banks on Tuesday, finally embracing the man who saved her life.

"Oh my god, I remembered you were so tall," Barko said as the pair hugged.

"I'm so happy you're alive," Banks replied.

Banks recalled how during the attack Cauchi looked at him and shook his head, as if to say he wasn't going to attack him, before he stabbed Barko.

The ex-military soldier sprung to action and quickly moved Barko into a shop to take refuge, where his wife helped him look after her.

"I looked at you when I saw the man stab you and I said straight away to myself I've got to help you... I didn't want you to die," he told Barko.

"Straight away I knew what I had to do to take control of the situation and the area."

Barko also recalled how Banks' wife was there and helped her get through it when she thought she was going to die.

"Your wife she was the person who started to shake me when I started to say 'I want to give up'...she is the one who (said to me) 'You are doing really well'," she said.

"For me...you were the angel who just appeared at the right moment at the right place."

Images: Nine

Heartless theft from "Garden of Little Angels"

In a despicable act of heartlessness, dozens of bronze plaques dedicated to children have been stolen from a memorial park in Melbourne's southwest. The theft not only deprives grieving families of precious mementos but also desecrates a sacred space meant to honour the memory of lost loved ones.

Victoria police were alerted to the crime when it was discovered that 75 plaques had been taken from Altona Memorial Park on Doherty’s Road. These plaques, erected in the "Garden of Little Angels", were loving tributes from families who had lost children, serving as symbols of remembrance and healing for those who visit the park.

The theft, which occurred sometime between March 12 and 13, has left the community shocked and appalled. It is a violation not only of property but of the sanctity of a space meant for solace and reflection. The perpetrators have callously disregarded the pain of grieving families and the significance of the memorial to the community.

In response to this reprehensible act, detectives have issued a warning to scrap metal dealers in the area to remain vigilant against any attempts to sell the stolen plaques. These plaques, though they may hold some monetary value as scrap metal, are priceless to the families who placed them in the memorial park, with their sentimental worth far outweighing any material gain.

The police are actively investigating the theft and are urging anyone with information to come forward. The return of the stolen plaques to their rightful place is paramount in restoring a sense of peace and closure to the families affected by this crime.

Images: Altona Memorial Park

Am I ever gonna see your face again? Nuanced and thoughtful, Kickin’ Down the Door puts The Angels back in the spotlight

When I was a kid, my dad Max took me to basketball games at Melbourne’s Entertainment Centre. I’d wait in my plastic bucket chair as the cheerleaders shook their pom poms and the teams did lay ups. The music was loud, and around the time everyone had found their seats, one song would often come on.

It opened with a wailing, single note guitar, followed by a chunky, palm muted riff, driving along until bursting into the chorus when the vocals would demand “Am I ever gonna see your face again?” And as I licked my lemonade icy pole I’d delight as the whole stadium would chant back “No way, get fucked, fuck off.”

I had no idea the band was called The Angels. I didn’t know they were supposed to be the next AC/DC but didn’t quite “make it”. The intense relationships at their core were lost on me. I was just delighted by how wild it felt, this song the audience owned, breaking rules, answering back.

A new documentary, Kickin’ Down the Door chronicles Australian band The Angels across four decades, from suburban Adelaide to the gloss of Albert Studiosand beyond.

The classic Oz rock vibe is omnipresent: dudes, riffs, volume.

But this story’s star quality is how hard it works to showcase the band from both front of house and backstage, offering something far more nuanced than the well-thumbed tale of these national music icons.

Finding intensity

The documentary centres on the songwriting team of the Brewster brothers, vocalist Bernard “Doc” Neeson, and a revolving cast of drummers, bass players and producers.

The themes are what you might like in a documentary about Australian rock ‘n’ roll: journeys to adulthood, mateship, resistance, lashings of hope, dollops of luck. Interviews from the band and their nearest and dearest sidle up against archival footage with cute animations bridging scenes.

There’s the ubiquitous drop-in from a couple of international names to provide cred – thankfully a Bono-free endeavour. There’s a slither of pre-hat Molly Meldrum. The eye candy of 70s and 80s Aussie life abounds.

The songs are central to Kickin’ Down the Door, but rock ‘n’ roll has always been about theatre, and front man Doc Neeson’s lead in creating an unsettling intensity at live shows lifted The Angels beyond the meat and potatoes of standard Oz rock.

In one scene, the lighting guy talks about how Doc used silence and darkness as a tool of intensity – the antithesis of rock show bombast.

A complex portrait

Like The Angels did with rock ‘n’ roll, Kickin’ Down the Door offers a key change in the way it positions the people behind the scenes. Director Madeleine Parry has brought together a complex web of relationships pivoting on creative jubilation, obligation, devotion and estrangement.

At an early gig, the Brewsters’ mother is recalled as dancing on a table in a “sea of blokes”. These were her boys, who could do no wrong.

Mothers, girlfriends, wives and children are elevated close to the story’s centre, anchored within the nostalgic rhythm of white suburban Australian life to contrast with the band’s sprint – then marathon – to rock ‘n’ roll stardom. Beyond the band bubble, everyone’s sacrifice is apparent.

“We all supplied the stability while they chased the dream,” says Neeson’s then partner.

In bringing women to the front, Parry frames the main players as multi-dimensional, emotional and expressive. The intensity of volume, riffage and flamboyance sits in dialogue with each band members’ reflections to present the way that “performance” seamlessly slides across gender and genre.

This deep thoughtfulness shines through the dizzying foray of complex legal and financial arrangements bands can be thrown into, setting them up with lifelong debt.

This is the persistent myth of “luck” in rock ‘n’ roll. This myth grinds against the power imbalance inherent in an incredibly competitive, brutal and sometimes hedonistic global business culture. For decades, rock ‘n’ roll has relied on the exploitation of artists who sacrifice family, health, economic security and friendships to have sustainable careers.

This documentary skilfully weaves the devastation that comes when these pressures evaporate years of work for bands and their teams.

It isn’t so much a story about the big bad music industry swallowing up another Australian wanna be. Rather, it is a well-crafted assemblage of the pervasive way rock ‘n’ roll’s mystique works behind the scenes, prioritising profits over health and wellbeing, and the sustainability of artists and their families.

The sonic legacy

Undoubtedly the biggest names now in Australian guitar driven music – Amyl and the Sniffers, Courtney Barnett, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Tame Impala – are part of the sonic legacy of bands like The Angels.

But they also show a marked shift in how they do business when courting international markets, maintaining elements of independence and control that The Angels had no blueprint for.

This current crop of bands also show we are on the road to far better gender representation of what contemporary rock music looks and sounds like. And in other genres, artists like Baker Boy, Genesis Owusu, Barkaa and Jaguar Jonze continue to contest and take ownership of “the sound” of Australian music.

Incidentally, I never went on to play basketball. I picked up an electric guitar instead.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Many followers pointed out how she managed to look younger than the 39-year-old.

“I’ll tell you, it was a good photo,” the actress admitted.

“Right place, right time. That’s the luck of the draw. Great lighting. I’m with a person that I adore, my son, and it was a going-away party, so my eyes were probably glistening with tears there, sparkling because he’s one of the human beings I worship.”

Smith noted that fans still remember her best for playing Kelly Garrett in the hit series, which aired from 1976 until 1981. She has since spoken about her time on Charlie's Angels, sharing fond memories from filming.

“Angels in chains, being chained together. Eating lunch together. It was an education and it was eye-opening because each girl was so unique with her own personality and style. And these are my friends today. That bond is what I really remember."

“The friendship is what I treasure from that,” she shared.

Image: Instagram

"Heaven gained an angel": Child star found dead at 16

Child star Kailia Posey, who shot to fame in the hit show about US child pageants Toddlers & Tiaras, has died at just 16 years of age.

Posey's heartbroken mother, Marcy Posey Gatterman, wrote on Facebook earlier this week, “I don’t have words or any thoughts. A beautiful baby girl is gone. Please give us privacy as we mourn the loss of Kailia. My baby forever.”

Her family have also confirmed that the manner of her death was suicide. They said: “Although she was an accomplished teenager with a bright future ahead of her, unfortunately in one impetuous moment, she made the rash decision to end her life.

“She won countless crowns and trophies after competing on the pageant circuit her entire life. Her highly acclaimed talent as a contortionist had already led to professional touring job offers, and she had recently been selected to be a cheerleader at her high school next fall.”

Posey was pronounced dead in Birch Bay State Park, in Washington, at around 1:20 pm on Monday. This is roughly a 30-minute drive away from her family home in Lynden.

Posey had just celebrated her 16th birthday on April 19, according to posts from her friends and family on social media.

Lynden’s cheerleading team shared a series of tributes to its Instagram, along with the two quotes: “Please stay. The world is better with you in it” and the second being: “Speaking a few kind words might be the most important thing you will do today.”

Posey was a young star on the TLC reality series, which ran from 2009 to 2013. The show featured families who prepared their children to compete in beauty pageants. She became a popular face online when her adorable “evil” grin went viral.

In a throwback scene from Toddlers and Tiaras, Kailia’s mum described her then 10-year-old daughter as a “cuddling puppy and a spicy little monkey.”

She continued: “When Kailia was younger, and she was three, she started doing pageants and she’s a pro when she hits that stage.

“She’ll say she’s nervous but once she hits that stage she’s a pro.”

She kept up with the pageant circuit as a teen and even announced on Instagram in January that she was gearing up to compete as Miss Washington Teen USA in February.

Heartbroken fans have taken to Instagram to share their prayers.

“Can’t even believe this has happened. I’m praying for you guys to get through this. She always was so kind to all of us,” commented America’s Got Talent competitor Kadan Bart Rockett.

“playing soccer with you is now a core memory. heaven gained an angel,” added another friend.

Images: Instagram

“My angels”: 80-year-old woman rescued at home after falling and breaking her hip

An 80-year-old woman who broke her hip and was unable to move in her home for four days has been rescued by police with the help of a Care Army volunteer.

Erika Freingruber fell at her Beaudesert house, south of Brisbane, at the end of April.

Paul Mahoney, a member of the newly formed Care Army Community Recovery team, called Beaudesert police on April 23 to request a welfare check after not being able to contact Freingruber.

“I had some concerns because when I spoke to Erika a few days beforehand, she had really been on the ball,” Mahoney said.

“I rang her and couldn’t contact her and then I also contacted her friend who had not been able to contact her either, so that’s when I rang the police.”

Police bodycam footage showed constables Glenn Engels and Max Gillett breaking into Freingruber’s home after hearing her calling for help.

Freingruber is now recovering in hospital. “You’re my lifesavers, my angels, not policemen, my angels,” she told the two officers, who visited her at Brisbane’s QEII Hospital.

“Can you imagine a week, nearly a week lying there, without help day and night?

“Every doctor who came here said, ‘You don’t know how lucky you are that you are alive’.”

Freingruber had previously been keeping regular contact with the Care Army Community Recovery team, a new organisation formed by the Queensland State Government to help monitor the elderly and vulnerable during the coronavirus pandemic.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk praised the work of the police department and the Care Army.

“I am extremely grateful to the member of the Care Army who raised the alarm when Erika couldn’t be contacted,” she said.

“And as for the police, I can’t say enough about the urgency, professionalism and compassion they brought to bear in going to Erika’s aid.”

Police Minister Mark Ryan said the incident highlighted the importance of checking up on vulnerable people in the community.

“Without the state government initiative of the Care Army, police probably would not have known Erika needed help,” Ryan said.

“In the darkness don’t forget, we can still show a little bit of kindness, compassion and care.”

5 minutes with author Maya Linnell

In 5 minutes with author, Over60 asks book writers about their literary habits and preferences. Next in this series is Maya Linnell, a writer based in rural Victoria. After working in journalism and public relations, she is now writing fiction and blogging for Romance Writers Australia. Her debut novel, Wildflower Ridge was recently shortlisted for the 2019 Australian Romance Readers Awards.

Over60 talked with Linnell about rural living, Anh Do’s uplifting work, and the literary trope she can’t stand.

Over60: What is your best writing tip?

Maya Linnell: Let yourself write junk! I’ve heard it said that an author doesn’t know what they’re trying to say until they’ve finished the first draft, so give yourself permission to write waffly descriptions and scenes that are likely to be cut in the next draft, just so you can push through and complete the story. Then you can cut the wheat from the chaff.

What book do you think more people should read?

Anh Do’s The Happiest Refugee is uplifting, heart-wrenching and inspiring. I dare someone to read it without smiling.

How has rural living influenced your writing?

I’ve lived in small country towns most of my life, and my office overlooks our paddocks, so my writing days are full of breaks to check on the cows, shoo the chickens off my garden and admire the wallabies, with a sound track of magpies, galahs, honeyeaters and cockatoos. It’s second nature to write about the issues faced by my community, my friends and my family on a regular basis, whether it’s livestock, snakes, succession planning, drought, mental health, good seasons and bad, and of course weather.

What was the last book that made you laugh or cry?

The Last Voyage of Mrs Henry Parker by Joanna Nell was a heart-warming tale that made me cry, and I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of Cassie Hamer’s second novel The End of Cuthbert Close which had me laughing every second page. It will be out in March and I know it’ll fly off the shelves.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

I sit at my desk from 9am to midday every weekday while I’m working on my first draft and tell myself the quicker I hit the 1,000 word mark, the quicker I get to do other things, like gardening, baking or sewing. At the moment I’m sewing skirts for my Bottlebrush Creek book tour – encompassing Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia) – and it’s a great incentive to stop me procrastinating or giving in to writers block.

Paperback, e-book or audiobook?

Paperback! After a day at the computer, I can’t stand looking at a screen for leisure. I also love audiobooks for long drives, housework and gardening. We live in the country in a big house, with huge gardens, so I get plenty of listening time!

Which author, deceased or living, would you most like to have dinner with?

Maya Angelou. She was the first famous person I’d ever heard of with the same name as mine – which was quite unusual in my small country town – and her writing is just beautiful.

What trope grinds your gears?

I love most tropes, but I can’t stand a book that trivialises violence against women. It’s less common these days, but that whole ‘abusive rogue who redeems himself to become the perfect partner’ is never going to work for me.

“R.I.P Twin Angels of Brisbane”: Image released of 6-week-old sisters

A tribute has been paid to the Brisbane twins who died in a suspected co-sleeping accident.

The six-week-old girls Violet and Indiana were found unconscious in their mother’s bed in Sunnybank Hills last Wednesday. One of the sisters died at the scene and the other was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but passed away the following day.

Their deaths are not being treated as suspicious.

“Preliminary investigations suggest the babies were sleeping together throughout the night and were discovered unresponsive in the morning,” police said.

A GoFundMe page titled “R.I.P Twin Angels of Brisbane” has been set up by family friend Kieran Garratt with an appeal for donations to cover the twins’ funeral costs.

“Violet and Indiana were tragically lost this week in Brisbane. They leave behind a big sister, big brother and two heartbroken parents,” Garratt wrote on the page.

“My wife Sylvia and myself, Kieran, are setting this up to ease the huge stress and weight of their burden.”

The page has so far raised over $7,900.

Garratt told ABC that the family is in grief. “They’re not holding up well at all. It’s a type of grief I’ve never dealt with or experienced before,” he said.

“I didn’t know what to do. There’s really nothing you can say or do that will help in a situation like this.”

The twins’ grandfather said one of the most difficult things would be explaining to the surviving children about their sisters’ death.

“It’s every parent’s worst nightmare what they are facing... they’ve been through hell,” he told Daily Mail Australia.

Inside Barbara Sinatra's $11 million Los Angeles penthouse

Barbara Sinatra’s Los Angeles penthouse is hitting the market for US$8 million (AU$11.3 million).

Located on the Wilshire Corridor in Westwood, the apartment was where the late socialite lived after the death of her husband, legendary singer Frank Sinatra.

Before her death in 2017, Barbara used to entertain celebrity guests and friends such as Gregory Peck and Kirk Douglas, and invite them over for poker nights, according to Leonard Rabinowitz, listing agent of Hilton & Hyland and a friend of the Sinatras.

The 520-square-metre property boasts four bedrooms, five terraces, an open floor plan and views of the mountains, ocean and city on all four sides.

The living room features a wood-burning fireplace, along with a built-in bar and cocktail area, and a table that can be flipped over to become a poker table. A set of sliding glass doors connects the living room to the outdoor dining area with sceneries of surrounding mountains.

The formal dining room has a private outdoor atrium and lounge area, while the kitchen is lined with black marble countertops.

Before Frank died in 1998, he and Barbara split their time between their Beverly Hills estate and a Malibu beach house, Rabinowitz said. After the singer’s death, Barbara and her friends were robbed on a Beverly Hills street, prompting her to look for an apartment with additional security.

She bought the 24-hour surveillance Westwood property in the early 2000s from Marilyn and Harry Lewis of the Hamburger Hamlet restaurant chain, according to public records.

Scroll through the gallery above to see inside Barbara Sinatra’s lavish penthouse.
