Clever uses for mayonnaise you’ll wish you knew sooner

<p>Don’t hold the mayo! It can be a great ingredient to have around: you can spread it on skin for an instant facial, slather it on your car to get it clean and more. Want to know what to do with mayo? Keep reading!</p> <p><strong>Condition your hair</strong></p> <p>Hold the mayo… and massage it into your hair and scalp just as you would any fine conditioner! Cover your head with a shower cap, wait several minutes, and shampoo. The mayonnaise will moisturise your hair and give it a lustrous sheen.</p> <p><strong>Treat yourself to a homemade facial</strong></p> <p>Why waste money on expensive creams when you can treat yourself to a soothing facial with whole-egg mayonnaise from your own refrigerator? Gently spread the mayonnaise over your face and leave it on for about 20 minutes. Then wipe it off and rinse with cool water. Your face will feel clean and smooth.</p> <p><strong>Strengthen your fingernails</strong></p> <p>To add some oomph to your fingernails, just plunge them into a bowl or mayonnaise every so often. Keep them bathed in the mayo for about five minutes and then wash with warm water.</p> <p><strong>Relieve sunburn pain</strong></p> <p>Did someone forget to put on sunscreen? To treat dry, sunburned skin, slather mayonnaise liberally over the affected area. The mayonnaise will relieve the pain and moisturise the skin.</p> <p><strong>Remove dead skin</strong></p> <p>Soften and remove dead skin from elbows and feet. Rub mayonnaise over the dry, rough tissue, leave it on for 10 minutes, and wipe it away with a damp cloth.</p> <p><strong>Kill head lice</strong></p> <p>Many dermatologists now recommend using mayonnaise to kill and remove head lice from kids instead of toxic prescription drugs and over-the-counter preparations. What’s more, lice are becoming more resistant to such chemical treatments. To treat head lice with mayonnaise, massage a liberal amount of mayonnaise into the hair and scalp before bedtime. Cover with a shower cap to maximise the effect. Shampoo in the morning and then use a lice comb to remove any remaining lice and nits. To completely eradicate the infestation, repeat the treatment in seven to 10 days.</p> <p><strong>Give your plants some shine</strong></p> <p>Professional florists use this trick to keep houseplant leaves shiny and clean. You can do the same thing at home. Just rub a little mayonnaise on the leaves with a paper towel, and they will stay bright and shiny for weeks and even months at a time.</p> <p><strong>Remove crayon marks</strong></p> <p>Did the kids leave crayon marks on your wood furniture? Here’s a simple way to remove them that requires hardly any elbow grease: Simply rub some mayonnaise on the crayon marks and let it soak in for several minutes. Then wipe the surface clean with a damp cloth.</p> <p><strong>Clean piano keys</strong></p> <p>If the keys to your piano are starting to yellow, just tickle the ivories with a little mayonnaise applied with a soft cloth. Wait a few minutes, wipe with a damp cloth, and buff. The piano keys will look like new.</p> <p><strong>Remove bumper stickers</strong></p> <p>Time to get rid of that old bumper sticker on your car? Instead of attacking it with a razor and risk scratching the bumper, rub some mayonnaise over the entire sticker. Let it sit for several minutes and wipe it off. The mayonnaise will dissolve the glue.</p> <p><strong>Get tar off your car</strong></p> <p>To get road tar or pine sap off your car with ease, slather some mayonnaise over the affected area, let it sit for several minutes, and wipe it away with a clean, soft rag.</p> <p><strong>Gum be gone</strong></p> <p>It is inevitable that every single child will eventually get gum stuck in their hair. Instead of busting out the scissors, open the fridge and grab some mayo, as the natural emulsifiers of mayonnaise may help soften the gum making it easier to remove, thus leaving their precious locks intact.</p> <p><strong>A clean WD-40 alternative</strong></p> <p>Don’t have any WD-40 on hand to silence that squeaky door? No worries, because mayonnaise does the trick as well and without the inevitable oil drips on the floor. Citrus-baked salmon with champagne mayonnaise

<p>A side of salmon is an easy yet smart way to feed a crowd, and a glamorous mayonnaise makes it doubly splendid.</p> <p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Serves:</span> </strong>8-10 as a starter<em>  </em></p> <p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Ingredients: </span></strong></p> <ul> <li>1 side of salmon (about 1kg), bones removed</li> <li>1 orange, juice and zest </li> <li>1 lemon, juice and zest, plus extra lemons for serving</li> <li>1 teaspoon sesame oil</li> <li>1 tablespoon cider vinegar</li> <li>1 tablespoon soy sauce</li> <li>2 tablespoons brown sugar</li> <li>1 tablespoon flaky sea salt</li> <li>1 teaspoon cracked black pepper</li> <li>Microgreens or dill for garnish (optional)</li> <li>Baguette or similar for serving</li> </ul> <p><em>For the mayonnaise:</em></p> <ul> <li>2 egg yolks</li> <li>1 teaspoon cider vinegar</li> <li>1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest</li> <li>1 tablespoon lemon juice</li> <li>1 clove garlic, peeled and finely chopped</li> <li>1 teaspoon grated horseradish (available in jars at the supermarket)</li> <li>2/3 cup neutral-flavoured oil </li> <li>2-3 tablespoons champagne or sparkling wine</li> </ul> <p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Method:</span></strong></p> <ol> <li>Heat oven to 200°C and line a baking tray with non-stick foil or baking paper. Place salmon on tray, skin side down.  </li> <li>Combine zest and juice from orange and lemon with the sesame oil, vinegar and soy sauce. Brush mixture over salmon then sprinkle with sugar, salt and pepper, pressing these gently into the flesh. </li> <li>Bake 15-20 minutes or until the salmon flesh is just opaque. Serve on a platter, with lemon wedges for squeezing, mayo and bread on the side, and garnished with microgreens or dill if desired. </li> <li>Mayonnaise: Place egg yolks, vinegar, lemon zest and juice, garlic, horseradish and a good pinch of salt in a small food processor and pulse to combine. With the motor running, add oil in a thin, steady stream. Fold in champagne a little at a time, gently mixing until the mayo is light and creamy. </li> </ol> <p><em>Written by Bernadette Hogg. Spicy tofu tacos with mango mayonnaise

<p>Great as a side (or a light meal), these spicy tofu tacos served with mango mayonnaise are a delicious vegetarian twist on a Mexican favourite.</p> <p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Serves:</span></strong> Two</p> <p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Ingredients:</span></strong></p> <ul> <li>2 cups finely sliced red cabbage</li> <li>1 tablespoon olive oil</li> <li>1/2 lemon, juiced</li> <li>1 block spicy tofu, cut into thick slices</li> <li>4 mini tortillas</li> <li>1/2 avocado, sliced</li> <li>1 small bunch coriander, leaves picked</li> <li>2 tablespoons Roza’s mango mayonnaise</li> <li>1 long red chilli, finely sliced</li> </ul> <p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Method:</span></strong></p> <ol> <li>Combine the red cabbage, half of the olive oil and the lemon juice in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.</li> <li>Lightly grease a medium frying pan with the remaining olive oil and heat over a medium-high heat. Add the spicy tofu and cook, stirring, for 1-2 minutes, or until golden.</li> <li>Meanwhile, heat the mini tortillas in a microwave or sandwich press (if using the microwave, place tortillas on a plate first).</li> <li>To serve, divide the tortillas between plates. Homemade mayonnaise

<p>If every dish has a hero, the sauce is its super powers. Mayonnaise is not only delicious and versatile, it naturally dairy and gluten free. Try making traditional home made mayonnaise yourself with this easy recipe.</p> <p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Ingredients:</span></strong></p> <ul> <li>2 free-range egg yolks</li> <li>1 heaped teaspoon Dijon mustard</li> <li>500 ml mixed oils</li> <li>1-2 tablespoons white wine vinegar</li> <li>½ lemon</li> <li>Sea salt</li> </ul> <p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Method:</span></strong></p> <p>1. Whisk the egg yolks in a bowl, then add the mustard and whisk together. Gradually add about half the oil, very slowly at first, whisking continuously for around 3 to 5 minutes, or until thickened.</p> <p>2. Once you’ve added about half the oil, whisk in 1 tablespoon of vinegar – this will loosen the mixture slightly and give it a paler colour. Continue to gradually add the remaining oil, whisking continuously.</p> <p>3. Season with a pinch of salt, a squeeze of lemon juice and a little more vinegar, if needed. Tuna and mayonnaise baked potato

<p>A true British classic and a hearty and healthy snack.  Because it’s such a firm favourite, almost everyone will have their own special way of rustling one up. This particular recipe is very simple to prepare and even easier to finish off.</p> <p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Ingredients:</span></strong></p> <ul> <li>2 large baking potatoes</li> <li>1 120g can John West No Drain Tuna Steak in a little sunflower oil</li> <li>2tbsp mayonnaise</li> <li>Salt and pepper to season</li> <li>1tbsp salted butter</li> <li>A little olive oil</li> <li>2tbsp grated cheddar</li> </ul> <p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Method:</span></strong></p> <ol> <li>Preheat your oven to 200°C.</li> <li>Rub the two potatoes with a little olive oil, prick them with a fork just two or three times, and then place them directly onto the top shelf of your preheated oven. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes.</li> <li>Tip the tuna into a large bowl. Add the mayonnaise and stir well. Season to taste with salt and pepper and put mixture to one side. </li> <li>When the potatoes have done their time and feel very crisp on the outside, yet soft on the inside, remove from the oven.</li> <li>Cut the potato in half and scoop out all the boiling hot flesh. Add this to the tuna mayonnaise mixture. Also add the butter, then stir and season again.</li> <li>Now, refill the potato skins with the mixture, sprinkle the four halves with a little grated cheese and put back in the oven - this time on a baking tray – for another 10 to 15 minutes.
