Michael Schumacher’s son gives rare interview about his father

Michael Schumacher's son has shared a rare insight into his life after his dad's devastating skiing accident.

Mick Schumacher, who was only 14 at the time of his dad’s accident, pursued his dream of reaching F1 without his father's guidance, and has spoken about how much his dad father continued to inspire him.

In the new book Inside Mercedes F1 written by Matt Whyman, the author had unrestricted access to the team, with the book including a conversation with Mick about his father’s influence.

The 25-year-old, who became a reserve driver for Mercedes in 2023, told Whyman, “I was a crazy kid — everything my dad did, I did."

“He was really supportive and a lot of fun, but could also be challenging. One time in a karting race I braked very late going into a corner and gained a lot of time."

“When I told him about it, he said, ‘Yes, but you should have braked like that in every corner!’."

“Whenever he felt like I was not taking it seriously, he would say, ‘Mick, would you rather go and play football with your friends? If so, we do not need to do all of this’."

“I insisted that I wanted to race and he said, ‘Okay, then let’s do it properly’. So we started doing more European karting and I was getting better.”

Mick later explained that he learned “a lot of technical points” from his dad that he “still uses today”, adding, “I started racing in the Formula classes the year after the accident and from that point onwards, I had to find my own feet."

“I started karting aged three. I was six when I first went scuba diving. Aged 10 I was skydiving."

“My dad was always very open to me trying out whatever I wanted to do and racing is all I wanted to do, because I enjoyed it the most.”

Anthony Albanese under fire over free Qantas upgrades

A journalist's new book has claimed that Anthony Albanese has been scoring free flight upgrades with Qantas for over 15 years.

According to AFR journalist Joe Aston's new book The Chairman’s Lounge, the PM and his family received upgrades from Qantas over his time as Transportation Minister and Opposition Leader between the years of 2007 and 2019.

Aston's investigation allegedly found that Albanese had used his relationship with former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce to secure free upgrades to business and first-class flights on at least 22 occasions.

“According to Qantas insiders, Albanese would liaise with Joyce directly about his personal travel,” Aston wrote.

Albanese has defended these upgrades by stating they were all “declared as appropriate”, saying, “From time to time, members of parliament receive upgrades. What’s important is that they are declared. All of mine have been declared."

“I note that a range of them go back a long, a long period of time and that they have all been declared as appropriate.”

Despite claiming that the upgrades were all above board, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton called the perks “a bit strange.”

“I think it is a bit strange that Mr Albanese is contacting the CEO of an airline when he is the shadow minister or minister for transport,” said Dutton.

“I very strongly believe in the need for people to declare their interests, and sometimes there are oversight and human error involved, but when you’re talking about having a personal phone call to ask for an upgrade, as the transport minister or shadow transport minister, then I presume the prime minister will answer questions about that.”

Baywatch star dies after lengthy health battle

Baywatch actor Michael Newman has died at the age of 68 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease.

The actor, who played lifeguard Mike “Newmie” Newman on Baywatch in the 1990s, was diagnosed with the neurological condition 18 years ago, and died “from heart complications” on Sunday evening “surrounded by his family and friends.”

His death was confirmed Tuesday by Newman’s close friend, Matt Felker, who recently directed the Hulu docu-series about Baywatch.

“I got to see Mike the last time he was conscious and he looked [at] me and in typical Mike fashion said, ‘You’re just in time,’” Felker told People.

Newman was the only Baywatch cast member who was a real-life lifeguard. He appeared on 150 episodes of the show, the most of anyone except David Hasselhoff.

While starring on Baywatch, he continued to work as a full-time firefighter and returned to the job after the show ended in 2001, until he retired after 25 years.

Newman was 50 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2006, as he spoke about living with the disease just months ago.

“This terminal disease has allowed me a lot of thinking time, which I maybe didn’t want, but it’s brought me wisdom,” Newman told People in August.

“My body has changed so slowly that I hardly notice it, yet I am constantly reminded that Parkinson’s has now become the centre of my life,” he added.

“I am cherishing the days that I get to be on this earth with family and friends,” he went on. “I’m taking life seriously.”

Newman spent the final years of his life raising money with the Michael J. Fox Foundation to help find a cure for Parkinson’s.

The late star is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sarah, their children Chris and Emily, and their 1-year-old granddaughter, Charlie.

"Absolutely despicable": Anthony Albanese slammed for Tourette's comment

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has issued an apology after making a sarcastic comment about Tourette Syndrome during Parliament’s Question Time on Tuesday.

During a heated discussion, the PM addressed Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor and said, “The idea - I mean this nonsense that they carry on with, the idea that we’re... have you got Tourette’s or something? You know, you sit there, babble, babble, babble.”

Albanese immediately withdrew the comment and apologised.

He went further on Tuesday evening, saying he knew the comment was inappropriate as soon as he said it.

“Today in Question Time I made comments that were unkind and hurtful,” he said.

“I knew it was wrong as soon as I made the comment. I apologised and I withdrew as soon as I said it but it shouldn’t have happened.”

“And I also want to apologise to all Australians who suffer from this disability. I regret saying it, it was wrong, it was insensitive and I apologise.”

Despite his apologies, his comments drew much criticism from Shadow Health Minister Anne Ruston, who said that “mocking a disability is no laughing matter”.

“This is absolutely despicable behaviour from (Albanese). The Prime Minister must immediately apologise to the entire Tourette’s community,” she posted on X, formerly Twitter.

“Australians living with Tourette’s deserve the PM’s respect, not his ridicule.”

Tourette Syndrome Association of Australia president Mandy Maysey, who has three children with the neurological disorder, was also outraged by the prime minister's comments, saying she was “absolutely livid”.

“I’m incredibly disappointed and just gobsmacked somebody that has the national stage would use that platform and Tourette syndrome to make an insult,” she told 7News.

“That’s my perspective as president of the association. As a parent, I am absolutely livid and disgusted. It shows a lack of education.”

“At the very least he owes the Tourette’s community an apology,” she said.

“This shows we have a very long way to go until Tourette syndrome is taken seriously as a condition.”

Michael Schumacher attends first 'public' event since accident

Michael Schumacher has reportedly attended his daughter's wedding, making this his first public appearance in 11 years.

Gina Schumacher tied the knot with Iain Bethke at the family’s luxury villa in Mallorca over the weekend, and while Michael's attendance was previously unknown, several outlets have reported that he attended the special event.

The Formula 1 icon's wife, Corinna, has kept his condition private since his tragic skiing accident in 2013, with only an extremely small inner circle of people allowed to see him, therefore this marks the first time that Michael has been 'seen' by extended friends and family.

The Daily Mail reported that privacy was extremely tight at the event, with wedding guests required to leave their phones at the front door upon arrival.

The family also reportedly looked at hiring a large security team to keep photographers away.

The success of the event has reportedly raised hopes that the family will consider future opportunities for the Ferrari icon to be seen in public, with more people reportedly being let into the 'inner circle'.

Michael's son Mick, who has been dating 23-year-old Danish model Laila Hasanovic for two years, is reportedly engaged to her, and in January it was reported that she had been given approval to visit the F1 legend.

Updates on the former racer's health have been few and far between.

Late last year, Schumacher's former boss at Ferrari and close friend Jean Todt revealed: "He is simply not the Michael he used to be. He is different, and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him. His life is different now, and I have the privilege of sharing moments with him. That's all there is to say."

Corinna also spoke publicly about the accident and her decision to keep Michael's condition private in a 2021 Netflix documentary.

"'Private is private’, as he always said. It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible,” she said.

“Michael always protected us and now we are protecting Michael. What he really didn’t like was the press, the people, all the hype around him. That’s not what he wanted. He wanted to do the sport," she continued.

In the documentary she also said: “I miss Michael every day.

“But it is not just me who misses him. It’s the children, the family, his father, everyone around him. I mean, everybody misses Michael, but Michael is here.

“Different, but he’s here, and that gives us strength. We’re together. We live together at home.”

Michael reportedly moved from his Swiss home to the exclusive Spanish villa where Gina's wedding was held in September 2020 according to the Spanish press.

According to The Sun, Michael spent much of his recent life at the $50 million villa, which is believed to have been adapted allowing a team of doctors and nurses to provide round-the-clock care.

Image: Instagram

"Treated as fools": Prime Minister hits out at supermarkets

On Thursday night the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) released an interim report on its supermarket inquiry, and found the price of a typical basket of groceries has increased by more than 20 per cent since 2019.

The report found that low-income households spent more than a fifth of their income on food.

While prices across all grocery products have increased, the most considerable hikes were in staples such as dairy products by 32 per cent, bread and cereal items by 28 per cent and meat and seafood prices have increased by a fifth.

The price of fruit and vegetables has increased by 19 per cent between the March 2019 quarter to the June 2024 quarter.

The ACCC released the interim report after examining whether supermarket giants were dudding suppliers and ripping off customers due to a lack of competition.

In a statement on Friday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has condemned major supermarkets.

“Customers don’t deserve to be treated as fools by the supermarkets. They deserve better than that,” he said.

“This is an important piece of work and we will study it closely.

“My government is taking a range of actions to make sure Australians are paying a fair price at the checkout and Australian suppliers are getting a fair price for their goods.”

Assistant Minister for Competition Andrew Leigh said this was the most comprehensive inquiry they've had in 15 years.

“Businesses need to do the right thing by Australians,” he said.

“Greater competition is critical for lifting dynamism, productivity and wages growth, putting downward pressure on prices and delivering more choice for Australians dealing with cost-of-living pressures.”

The report also found that due to "excessive" prices, many shoppers were buying less food and focusing on cheaper products to stay within their budgets. Others were eating less frequently and have smaller meals, or changing their shopping habits by comparing online prices before going in store.

As a result, ACCC deputy chair Mick Keogh said Australians were “losing trust in the sale price claims by supermarkets”.

“These difficulties reportedly arise from some of the pricing practices of some supermarkets, such as frequent specials, short-term lowered prices, bulk-buy promotions, member-only prices and bundled prices,” he said.

In Australia, Woolworths and Coles contribute to 67 per cent of supermarket sales, with Aldi accounting for 9 per cent and IGA contributing 7 per cent.

The ACCC will release their recommendations in their final report due in February 2025.

This follows the ACCC launching legal action against Coles and Woolworths over allegations of misleading customers with fake discount prices.

Image: Daria Nipot / Shutterstock.com/ MICK TSIKAS/EPA-EFE/ Shutterstock Editorial

"People are losing faith": Nat Barr takes aim at Albanese government

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has defended his record on economic management as the Labor party's primary vote continues to slip in the polls against Peter Dutton ahead of next year's election.

This week's Newspoll shows that Labor's primary vote has slumped to 31 per cent, the lowest it has been since the 2022 election, while the Coalition remains steady at 38 per cent.

On Thursday, Sunrise host Nat Barr told the Prime Minister that while on her way to the studio she had spoken to a Labor-voting taxi driver who said he was "losing faith" in Albanese's leadership, as things were "too expensive".

“This is your biggest problem, people like this cabby are losing faith. How do you respond to that?” Barr asked Albanese.

Albanese defended his choices by pointing out that ABS figures released on Wednesday showed annual inflation rates at 2.7 per cent in August, down from 3.5 per cent in July, and the lowest it has been since August 2021.

“Cost-of-living pressures are real, but that’s why we have engaged with responsible economic management in order to bring inflation down whilst we have been delivering cost-of-living relief,” he said.

“Yesterday’s figures show the headline inflation is down from 3.5 to 2.7 (per cent), it is a good outcome.

“There’s more work to be done, but we’ve done that whilst we have delivered a tax cut for that cabby who would have got nothing under the previous scheme.”

Albanese added that energy bill relief, cheaper childcare, and fee-free TAFE places were also making a difference to cost-of-living pressures.

However, Barr hit back and said that the cost-of-living measures such as the energy rebate were “artificial” as the rebate would end.

“The RBA has said, this does not mean that inflation is under control. The power rebate is going to end and that’s keeping it at one level at the moment, that’s why they look at underlying inflation — they take out volatile stuff,” Barr said.

“So, what do you say about inflation still being at this level?” she asked.

“What I say is if you exclude volatile, the figures released yesterday, which are known as month-by-month, but they’re year-to-year … that figure is down from 3.7 down to 3 (per cent). That’s a remarkable drop,” Albanese responded.

“The Reserve Bank Australia’s target band is 2 to 3 (per cent). Every single one of the figures yesterday that were released, whether it was headline, excluding volatile, mean, all of them saw significant drops in inflation.

“Inflation is half what we inherited and one-third of where it peaked …That is in part because of the back-to-back budget surpluses that we have delivered that in part is, yes, energy bill relief, but also what we’ve done in cheaper childcare, fee-free TAFE, the deliberate policy design to help people whilst putting that downward pressure on inflation,” he said.

Image: Sunrise

“Enough is enough”: Albanese to introduce social media ban for children

Australian children could soon be banned from accessing social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok amid growing concerns around its impacts on young minds.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed on Tuesday that his government would introduce landmark legislation to enforce a minimum age limit for access to social media, with the minimum age yet to be determined.

This follows similar announcements made from Victoria and South Australia, with SA proposing an outright ban for kids under 13 and parental consent between the ages of 14 and 15, an option that is being considered to be implemented across the country.

“We are taking this action because enough is enough,” Albanese said in a statement provided before the announcement.

“Parents are worried sick about this.

“The safety and mental and physical health of our young people is paramount.”

The legislation will be introduced before the end of this year, after an age verification trial, although the age limits and start date have yet to be finalised.

The government said the legislation would be worked on in national cabinet and draw on a report by former High Court Chief Justice Robert French commissioned by the SA government and released on Sunday.

The report includes a draft bill to ban children under 14 from social media and making mandatory for companies to gain parental consent for 14 and 15-year-olds to use their platforms.

On Tuesday morning, Albanese told Sunrise host Natalie Barr that he wanted to see kids “off their devices and on to the footy fields or the netball courts to get them interacting with real people having real experiences."

“And we know that social media is doing social harm.

“We want to make sure we get it right, but we want to make sure as well that we act which is why we have said we will introduce legislation before the end of this year."

When the Sunrise host pointed out that "no country in the world has successfully been able to do this," with young teens finding alternative ways to access adult sites including using a VPN, Albanese replied: “that is why we are doing the trial to get it right”.

“If it was easy it would have been done around the world. But just because something is hard doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try.

“We want to work with parents to work with companies, to work with state and territory governments to make sure that we act in this area.”

Albanese also said that allowing children unfettered access to smartphones and social media have had devastating impacts for some families, including through online bullying and access to material which causes social harm.

“The safety and mental and physical health of our young people is paramount,’’ he said.

“We are taking this action because enough is enough.”

Investigations, trials and negotiations with social media companies are currently ongoing, with Albanese saying the social media giants also needed to take responsibility.

“They’re not above everyone else. They can’t just say, ‘We’re a big multinational company. We can do whatever we like’, regardless of the harm that’s being caused,” he said.

SA Premier Peter Malinauskas, who led the change to introduce the bans, said his state’s bill would require platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok to ensure they took all reasonable steps to prevent children from getting access.

“This is a problem that demands swift and decisive leadership, and I thank the Prime Minister for demonstrating it,’’ the SA Premier said.

“The evidence shows early access to addictive social media is causing our kids harm.

“This is no different to cigarettes or alcohol. When a product or service hurts children, governments must act.”

The National Cabinet discussed the issue formally and informally last week, with all jurisdictions committed to tackling the issue.

Image: Viktollio / Shutterstock.com

Quirky grandfather shocks Today hosts with unusual funeral plans

Michael 'Skip' Field has decided he doesn't want his family crying for him at an ordinary funeral when he dies.

Instead, the quirky Queensland grandfather wants a celebration for his final send off and wants his family to remember him in a very unique way.

Skip shared his funeral plans with Today hosts Sarah and Alex, who were perplexed by Skip's plans for his final send-off.

"I've been to a lot of funerals over the years, I'm an old fart and I never enjoyed any of them," Skip said.

"So come the time I turn toes up, they're going to cart me off to the crematorium for a big barbecue, where I'll be the guest of honour, then when the heat dies down, they're going to put me in a little shoe box and give my young son a ring," he said.

"He'll come and pick me up and I'm an avid cowboy shooter, we load our own ammunition and one of the things that happens to cowboys when they pass on is they have a cowboy salute where you get a big, long line and everybody fires a shotgun, bang, bang, bang, bang, and have a salute."

"Well, I'm going to get my ashes mixed into the shotgun shells and donate the shotgun shells to the range and they can shoot me off down the range."

"Plus all the smoke that comes out at the end of the barrel is a bit blue, but being a Queenslander, I've got a bit of maroon chalk that's going to go in with the ashes, so when they come out at the end of the barrel it's going to be a maroon tinge on it," he said.

Today hosts Sarah and Alex were gob-smacked by the idea of Skip donating his ash-filled bullets to the local firing range, but that's not all he has planned.

"The other thing is a friend of mine's got a cannon and we're going to shoot part of the ashes out of the cannon at Pleasant Range near Dalby," he said.

"Then the kids don't need a big, morbid ceremony, so they're going to have a party here at my house and I bought this thing called the 'loved one launcher' that is like a giant party popper, you put your ashes in and it'll shoot you 75 yards into the air with confetti and streamers and all that - Yeehaw! It's going to be great."

Skip said the whole process cost less than getting a casket for the ground and it would be the last big thing he gets a say in.

Anthony Albanese under fire over "cringe" cost of living joke

Anthony Albanese has come under fire for a tone deaf joke about the ongoing cost of living crisis.

The Prime Minister took to his Instagram page to share a parody photo of the So Fresh compilation CDs, with the cover instead saying “so helpful, cost of living relief — Winter 2024”.

In place of top songs, the album cover references government initiatives including “cheaper medicine”, “tax cuts for every Australian taxpayer”, “$300 off power bills” and “$3 billion of student debt wiped”.

“New album just dropped,” Mr Albanese captioned the post.

While the references on the cover are in relation to the cost of living relief measures introduced in the 2024 federal budget, many were quick to slam to the post as "insensitive" as everyday Aussies continue to struggle.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Anthony Albanese (@albomp)

“This just isn’t it bro. Michael Jackson's staggering debt revealed

Michael Jackson was reportedly drowning in massive debt at the time of his death in 2009.

According to newly released court documents, the late King of Pop owed more than $500 million ($747.05 million AUD) to more than 65 creditors just before he passed.

Jackson had “more than half a dozen lawsuits pending worldwide” and more than “65 creditors’ claims were filed in the estate spawning additional lawsuits, of which several resulted in litigation,” the documents state.

According to the documents, that were filed in a Los Angeles court on June 21st, the executors of Jackson's will were able to “renegotiate and restructure financing arrangements,” including a lucrative deal with Sony over rights he had to music publishing for several artists, at “substantially reduced interest rates” to avoid further losses and rectify the debts.

The $750 million ($1.120 billion AUD) agreement allowed Sony to acquire Sony/ATV, which held the rights to almost 3 million famous songs from artists including John Lennon and Paul McCartney, David Bowie and Taylor Swift.

Despite settling the major agreement with the record label, the Jackson estate still reportedly owes a significant amount of money as “there remain challenging business, tax and legal issues that the executers and their counsel continue to deal with.”

The filing reportedly also notes a pending final decision on a victory in a 2021 court battle with the IRS.

Jackson’s three children, Prince, 27, Paris, 26, and Bigi Jackson, 22 — who are the beneficiaries of his estate — have been blocked from receiving money from their trust until the IRS dispute has been settled.

A spokesperson for the estate clarified, “The estate has a very cooperative relationship with Michael’s children and whenever they need anything, the estate works with them to ensure that they are very well taken care of, just as Michael would have wanted.”

The Los Angeles Times previously reported that Michael accrued so much debt largely in part because of his excessive spending habits, which were aired during his 2003 interview with Martin Bashir that laid bare his extravagant spending.

Julian Assange has shared an emotional message with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese after he touched down in Australia for the first time in over a decade.

On Wednesday, the WikiLeaks founder pleaded guilty to a single count of espionage in exchange for his freedom after a 14-year long legal battle.

After fronting a federal court in Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands, a US commonwealth in the Pacific, on Wednesday morning, Assange then boarded a plane to Australia and landed in Canberra on Wednesday night.

When he landed, Assange was greeted by a throng of waiting media and a small group of supporters, who he dodged as he headed straight toward his wife, 40-year-old lawyer Stella Assange who is the mother of his two sons, Gabriel and Max.

After the emotional family reunion, the 52-year-old spoke with Anthony Albanese, telling him simply, "You saved my life."

Mr Assange’s lawyer Jennifer Robinson went on to say that his statement "wasn't an exaggeration".

Ms Robinson told the media that her client is “absolutely delighted” to arrive home following “long and complex” negotiations with the government.

She said the development was a “huge win” for Australia and showed that Mr Albanese had “stood up to our ally”, the US.

“That Julian came home today is the product of 14 long years of legal battles, political advocacy and ongoing campaigning — not just by us, but by so many people in this community,” she said.

Mr Albanese later tweeted a picture of himself on the phone with the caption, “Earlier tonight I was pleased to speak with Julian Assange to welcome him home to his family in Australia."

“His arrival home ends a long-running legal process. I want to express my appreciation to the United States and the United Kingdom for their efforts in making this possible."

“As Prime Minister, I have been clear – regardless of what you think of his activities, Mr Assange’s case had dragged on for too long. I have clearly and consistently – at every opportunity and at every level – advocated for Mr Assange’s case to be concluded.”

"The issue is, he's alive": AFL mistakenly commemorates Hawthorn great

The AFL has found itself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons after prematurely mourning a former player’s death at this week’s Hall of Fame ceremony.

The ceremony, held on Tuesday night, saw Collingwood great Dane Swan inducted into the Hall of Fame and Hawthorn’s Jason Dunstall elevated to Legend status. But amidst the celebrations and the teary-eyed tributes, the AFL managed to pull off a major faux pas during the "In Memoriam" segment, which is of course supposed to honour those in the game who have passed away within the last year.

Hawthorn's John Kennedy Jr was the first to express his shock on Channel 7’s The Front Bar program on Thursday night. "That 71 team, obviously a famous team and important team in Hawthorn’s history," host Sam Pang began, setting the stage for Kennedy’s bombshell. “But I believe, John, you have a cheerio you’d like to give to one of the players.”

Kennedy, not one to miss an opportunity, replied: “I’d like to send one out to Michael Porter who played in the ’71 Grand Final. ‘Portholes’ they called him. He was noted as deceased last night on the AFL Hall of Fame, as one of the deceased people. The issue is he’s alive. So Portholes, if you’re listening mate or you’re up there in NSW, let us know when the wake is because we’ll be all there mate!”

Indeed, the prematurely deceased Porter, who played 78 games for Hawthorn and was part of their 1971 VFL premiership team, took the news of his untimely death with remarkably good humour. Instead of sending a ghostly telegram from the great beyond, he simply called up former Hawks captain David Parkin, who was in the room for the Hall of Fame ceremony in Melbourne, to confirm he was alive and well.

A league spokesman, likely blushing a shade of crimson, said: “Once this innocent mistake was realised we moved quickly to ring and apologise to everyone affected, including Michael, and thank him for his understanding.”

Michael Porter, now thrust back into the limelight in the most unexpected fashion, might just hold the unique distinction of being the only player to attend his own wake and live to tell the tale. We can only hope he’s planning a grandiose party with a guest list featuring all his mates who would’ve otherwise been mourning his "passing".

So, here’s to Michael Porter – alive, well and hopefully laughing his head off at the AFL’s latest gaffe. And for the AFL, perhaps a lesson: next time, double-check the list before sending anyone to the great footy oval in the sky.

Images: Network 7
