"World's biggest" amber nugget worth over $1 million used as doorstop for decades

An elderly woman in Romania has unknowingly used one of the largest known amber nuggets in the world - worth over €1 million ($1.6 million) - as her doorstop for decades.

The woman found the stone in the bed of a stream in Colti, a village in the southeast Romania, and used it as her doorstop for years without realising its value.

Members of her family also reported that thieves had once broken into her home, but only stole a few pieces of gold jewelry, missing the seemingly insignificant rock.

“In their frantic search for valuables, they overlooked the real treasure that was there before their eyes,” they said.

It wasn't until after the woman died in 1991 that a relative who inherited her home suspected the doorstop might be more than meets the eye - and he was right.

When he sold the amber to the Romanian state, experts at the Museum of History in Krakow, Poland appraised the rock and found that the amber is likely between around 38 and 70 million years old.

“Its discovery represents a great significance both at a scientific level and at a museum level,” Daniel Costache, director of the Provincial Museum of Buzau, told local news outlet El Pais.

The expert also claimed that the amber is one of the largest pieces in the world and the largest of its kind weighing a hefty 3.5-kilograms.

It has now been classified as a national treasure of Romania, and can be found in the Provincial Museum of Buzau, where it has been since 2022.

Romania is one of the countries with significant deposits of amber, with Buzau County being one of the areas where you can find these beautiful stones in abundance.

The protected area also contains the old Stramba amber mine, which was very productive during the first half of the 21st century, before it was shut down by the communist regime as it was considered unprofitable.

Image: Buzău County Museum

Kate Middleton confirms the end of her chemotherapy

The Princess of Wales has confirmed that she has finished chemotherapy and is now focused on staying cancer free.

Kate Middleton, who announced in March that she was undergoing preventative chemotherapy for an undisclosed type of cancer, shared the update on social media with a deeply personal message.

"As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment," she began in the video, which was shot last month in Norfolk.

"The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown," she continued.

“The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you.

“With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything.

“This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved.”

Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis all feature alongside Kate in the video, as they're surrounded by nature, with the couple even showing a rare display of public affection.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Prince and Princess of Wales (@princeandprincessofwales)

The Princess said that going forward her focus would be on “doing what I can to stay cancer-free” but was “looking forward to being back at work”, with plans to undertake a light program of engagements until the end of the year.

“Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes,” she added.

“Despite all that has gone before, I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life.”

She then thanked the public for their support, saying how grateful the family were and how they had “drawn great strength from all those who are helping us at this time”.

"Everyone's kindness, empathy and compassion has been truly humbling."

“To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey – I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Readers response: What have you had to cut out of your life to cope with cost of living pressures?

As the cost of living continues to rise, many people have had to cut things out of their day to day spending to cope with the financial struggles.

We asked our readers what they have had to cut out of their budgets to cope with cost of living pressures, and the response was overwhelming. Here's what they said.

Wendy Oliver - We don’t eat out often at all… I spend too much in the supermarket.

Christine Brooks - I've cut out steak, good nutritional foods, TV streaming, entertainment, haircuts, new clothes, pets, pool cleaning, and more.

Kerrie Dare - I limit steak meals. I've stopped my haircuts to every 4 months. Internet is getting chopped. I can only afford exercise classes twice a week. I don't eat as much fruit as I used too. I only buy groceries when on special. One bottle of wine per fortnight. One slice of sourdough in the morning, which means the loaf lasts a week. I turn on my washing machine around every 10 days & I have quick showers. No eating out or take away. Maybe one cup of coffee per week with a friend. Movies once every 6 weeks as a social group. No concerts or clubs. I drive only locally, so a tank of petrol lasts 1 month. No weekends away.

Jane Dawes - No coffees, beauty treatments, hairdresser, eating out, takeouts etc. The trouble is not affording to spend on certain items has a flow on effect for businesses. Everyone is suffering.

Lois E. Fisk - Going out to eat or see movies in the cinema or live plays or new clothes. I shop at the least expensive grocery stores as much as possible, and good cuts of meat rarely happen.

Janice Stenning - Don't go to the hairdressers as often and don't buy as many clothes.

Debra Dugar - Thinking about dropping my extras cover of my insurance. By the time I pay for it, I can't afford the gap you have to pay.

Robyn Lee - Living in my own house. I now live with my family.

Rhondda Hughes - Well, petrol is expensive so I have to really think if I can afford to visit anyone. I can’t eat meat much and even vegetables can be expensive. We have three chickens so they give us eggs but good quality eggs and healthy chickens require money too. Fortunately I live in Perth so, in comparison to other states, it isn’t as cold however the cost of heating is a significant consideration and therefore I just tend to go to bed.

Felicity Jill Murphy - Stopped going out to shopping centres. That's where I spend money unnecessarily.

Around 210,000 eligible South Australian households will receive a cost-of-living payment this week, including pensioners, Centrelink recipients and low-income earners.

A Cost of Living Concession of $255.60 will be paid to all eligible households, with the annual payments made to eligible tenants and self-funded retirees doubled to match the amount given to homeowners.

The payment is part of the state government's $266.2 million cost-of-living relief package announced in this year's state budget.

This included the one-off additional payment of $243.90 to households who received last year's cost-of-living payment in June.

South Australia's Premier Peter Malinsauskas said the government had delivered the “single largest cost-of-living assistance package in South Australia’s history”.

“We know people are doing it tough and cost-of-living pressures are continuing to have an impact on many South Australians,” he said.

“In the past two months, our government will have issued more than $100 million in targeted cost-of-living relief to South Australian households.”

Pensioners and other card holders including, the Pensioner Concession Card, Veteran Gold Card, Low Income Health Care Card and Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, as well as low-income households and those receiving Centrelink payments including JobSeeker, the Parenting Payment and Youth Allowance, are eligible to receive the SA Cost Of Living Concession.

Those who want to receive the concession for that financial year will need to apply online by December 31 and only one person per household can receive the payment and it will be based on your circumstances on July 1.

Those who have previously received the payment and whose circumstances haven't changed don't need to reapply.

The payments started rolling out this month, with Human Services Minister Nat Cook saying that all payments should come through by early next week.

“This includes everyone who received a payment last year and who is still eligible, as well as new applications which have been processed up to now,” Cook said.

"Anyone who thinks they might be eligible for cost-of-living support should head to the sa.gov.au website to have a look at the eligibility criteria."

Other states have also provided cost-of-living support, with eligible seniors in Western Australia able to receive a Cost of Living Rebate of $107.12 for singles and $160.68 for couples.

While in the ACT, apprentices and tradies in the state can get a one-off $250 Cost Of Living payment if they are employed by an ACT employer.

NSW has a few cost-of-living initiatives including up to $350 energy rebates for eligible households, and up to $4,220 early childhood fee relief for 3 to 5-year-olds attending eligible community and mobile preschools.

Image: Shutterstock

Aussie dad's life-changing $100,000 find

After seven years of hunting for lost items with his metal detector, one Vi dad has struck gold - unearthing a nugget worth about $100,000.

Luke Phillips, who shares metal-detecting videos on his YouTube channel Dig It Detecting, recorded the moment found the nugget in the Goldfields region.

Phillip initially found tiny flecks of gold in the 150-year-old miner's hole dating back to the Victorian gold rush. It was when he decided to run his detector over a moss-covered log that he heard a faint signal.

He rolled the log over and thought he might actually be digging for a horseshoe before repeatedly exclaiming “oh my god” as he realises it was something much bigger.

“This is probably the deepest target I’ve ever dug for gold,” Phillips said in the video.

“Holy smokes! Mate, we didn’t dig that far for no reason,” he says to his friend, Andrew, as they unearthed the nugget.

“Holy smokes, if we didn’t get a gram before we’ve certainly got it now.

“Holy f***, look at it!”

Phillips then joked his friend would not need his glasses to see the nugget.

“I’ve never witnessed or seen or experienced something quite like this,” Phillips said. “I didn’t expect to see gold. That is so cool.”

Phillips continued to excavate a larger hole, and couldn't hide how astonished he was.

“I never thought I would see this day where I was going to unearth a nugget,” he said.

“It’s like an egg ... that’s like a freaking egg.”

He took the nugget home where he cleaned it and weighed it at 868.4g.

He has reportedly sold the nugget since finding it back in May, and although the sale price was confidential, it was likely to have been sold for a six-figure-price.

"It was an exhilarating feeling — I knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime moment. That moment in time will be with me forever," Phillips told 9News.

The discovery and sale of the gold nugget has been "life-changing" for Phillips after he had to stop working full time due to health issues a few years ago.

He said that the nugget will help out his family in a "big way".

"It's not something I'm going to retire on, of course, but it will pay some bills off and we can put a bit on the mortgage, or buy a car," he said.

Images: YouTube

Anthony Albanese has come under fire for a tone deaf joke about the ongoing cost of living crisis.

The Prime Minister took to his Instagram page to share a parody photo of the So Fresh compilation CDs, with the cover instead saying “so helpful, cost of living relief — Winter 2024”.

In place of top songs, the album cover references government initiatives including “cheaper medicine”, “tax cuts for every Australian taxpayer”, “$300 off power bills” and “$3 billion of student debt wiped”.

“New album just dropped,” Mr Albanese captioned the post.

While the references on the cover are in relation to the cost of living relief measures introduced in the 2024 federal budget, many were quick to slam to the post as "insensitive" as everyday Aussies continue to struggle.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Anthony Albanese (@albomp)

“This just isn’t it bro. Last Australian 'Rat of Tobruk' dies age 102

Thomas Pritchard, Australia's last "Rat of Tobruk" has passed away at the age of 102.

Pritchard was part of the famous garrison who held the eponymous Libyan port against a furious Nazi siege in World War II.

The Rats of Tobruk Association announced Pritchard's death on Saturday, honouring his service to his country.

"Tommy was a stalwart member of our association and a most humble veteran, having served with the 2/5th field ambulance throughout the Middle East and the South West Pacific," the association wrote in a post.

"We as an Association are extremely grateful to have had Tommy for so long yet we mourn his loss and the last direct linkage with some 14,000 Australian servicemen who served in Tobruk."

The post added that Pritchard would be farewelled in a private family funeral, as was Tommy's wishes.

However, they added that a public memorial for all Rats of Tobruk will take place in Melbourne, with the date yet to be confirmed.

The Rats of Tobruk were an Allied garrison of about 26,000 soldiers, including 14,000 Australians, commanded by Australian Lieutenant-General Leslie Morehead.

They were besieged by the Nazi Afrika Korps, comprised of German and Italian troops, from April 10th to November 27th 1941.

The Africa Korps, under the leadership of Nazi general Erwin Rommel, had never known defeat, until he faced the Rats for 231 days, who denied Rommel a port on the Libyan coast as the Nazis were unable to take control of Tobruk.

The nickname came from American-born Nazi propagandist William Joyce, who, when he heard the Allied soldiers were taking cover in the pre-existing below-ground defences of the city, derided them as living like "rats".

However, Aussies took the nickname with pride as they celebrated their victory.

Image credits: Rats of Tobruk Association

Six-year-old denied passport over trademarked name

A mother from the UK has been left "absolutely devastated" after her six-year-old daughter's passport application was denied because she is named after a famous character in the fantasy series Game of Thrones.

Lucy, a 39-year-old mum from South West England, told the BBC that things went downhill when she started planning their “dream” trip to Disneyland Paris as a family and needed to get her daughter a passport.

She said that the initial application to get her daughter, Khaleesi, 6, was unable to be processed, with officials telling her she needed approval from Warner Brothers because they own the name’s trademark.

“I was absolutely devastated, we were so looking forward to our first holiday together,” Lucy said.

“I had a letter come through from the Passport Office, saying her name is trademarked by Warner Brothers,” she said.

“It was the first I’ve heard of such a thing — I was astonished.”

After receiving legal advice, the mum learned her daughter was legally allowed to use that name, and forwarded that information along to the Passport Office.

“I didn’t understand and felt frustrated. If she could get a birth certificate, would something not have been flagged up then?” she said.

“I never thought you could trademark a name,” she added.

The Passport Office reportedly later called Lucy to apologise for the error and said they would continue with the process of little Khaleesi's passport.

Lucy said she believes the problem was only solved because she complained on social media.

“If I hadn’t posted this on social media, nothing would have been done. I would have been stuck, not knowing what to do,” she said, adding that others had reached out saying they’d experienced something similar.

Lucy now said she is waiting until her daughter’s passport arrives before booking a new trip to Disneyland Paris.

“I am hoping the passport will be issued soon and was promised that they would call back in a few days to see if it had progressed,” she told the BBC.

She also hopes her story may help others stuck in a similar situation, saying, “I think there might be other people in this situation, that they may have had their passports declined recently because of something like this. Hopefully, they now know it can be resolved."

Image credits: HBO / BBC / Family Handout

Second person dies during Legionnaires outbreak

A man in his 60s has become the second person to die from Legionnaires amidst the outbreak in Victoria.

The man became unwell on July 27th and was admitted to hospital, where he died on August 1st.

His death comes just days after a woman in her 90s also died from the disease.

Victoria's Chief Health Officer Clare Looker confirmed that the state is now grappling with 77 confirmed cases, including two in the past 24 hours and another seven suspected cases.

Most people with the disease are over 40 years of age and are believed to have been exposed between July 5th and July 20th.

Despite the worrying case number, Looker confirmed that authorities have seen a reduction in cases and believe the situation is stabilising.

The source of the outbreak is being linked to a cooling tower in the Laverton North and Derrimut area of Melbourne, after more than 50 sites have been inspected.

Authorities believe there is a high likelihood they have already tested and treated the source, while sharing that weather patterns could explain the extent of the outbreak.

They have contacted another 1000 businesses across Melbourne, telling them to self-test and report to the Department of Health, Looker said.

Legionnaires’ disease is caused by the legionella bacteria, which is found in natural bodies of water as well as spas, warm water systems, potting mix and artificial systems that use water for cooling.

Symptoms usually include a chest infection, aches, headache, fever, cough and chills.

They lied.”

Sursok asked her to elaborate on the promises they made, but Kennerley refused.

“I don’t want to go into it now. History. And I’m even dumbfounded that I said to myself after I’ve gone, oh my God. Drawings by teen Queen Victoria to go up for auction

A set of 19th century drawings made by a teenage Queen Victoria will be put up for sale at the Old Master, British and European Pictures auction in Roseberys, London next week.

A few of the sketches were made when the royal - who reigned from 1837 until her death in 1901 - was still a princess and just 14 years old.

Dated July 1833, the drawings depict a knight, a woman, and a veiled woman on a horseback.

The fourth drawing was made a year after she ascended the throne, and depicted a woman sitting with a crown and sash, similar to herself, with the inscription: "by Her Majesty."

Charlotte Russell, Head of Sales at the auction house, said: "These slightly early drawings show that maybe she was still learning a lot, that she was still honing her craft."

"She was very curious and keen as an artist," Russell told CNN.

Roseberys set an estimated sale price of £1,500 to £2,500 ($AU2853 to $4755) for the album with the four sketches, as well as works by other artists.

Russel added that the album was likely assembled by Augusta Hayter, daughter-in-law of George Hayter, who was the Queen's court painter and painted her coronation portrait.

The album also features royal ephemera, including an invitation to the coronation of King George IV at Westminster Abbey in 1821.

"I'm interested to see how it performs," Russell said.

Queen Victoria was very passionate about art, receiving her first drawing lesson at just eight years old.

She went on to be tutored by renowned artists like Edwin Landseer, William Leighton Leitch and Franz Xaver Winterhalter.

"She is known to have experimented quite a lot with different subjects," Russel said, adding that Victoria would make "little sketches of costumes of people in the areas" where she travelled.

Images: Roseberys Fine Art Auctioneers & Valuers via CNN/ Shutterstock

Young woman exposes "hate" response to Origin's Welcome to Country

The young woman who delivered the Welcome to Country at the State of Origin has opened up on the "overwhelming" response to it, revealing how she has "received a lot of hate".

Savannah Fynn, 22, was invited to deliver the Welcome to Country and while it was generally well received, it also led to radio host Kyle Sandilands slamming the practice in general, saying the practice had become “overused and lost its impact”.

Since then, Fynn revealed that she has received an overwhelming amount of hate online, with some even jumping to criticise her appearance.

“I was just so worried I would stutter or mess up my words because I’d never spoken in front of that many people,” Fynn told Stellar.

“But once I finished, I felt a moment of relief. I ran straight over to my nan, obviously one of my Elders, and I gave her a big hug and a cuddle. It’s definitely an overwhelming feeling, getting all this attention. It’s not something I’m used to at all."

“I’m a very quiet person so this is a big change. Even though it’s all positive, I struggle with taking compliments and I get a bit shy. I’m kind of ready for it to die down!”

“As sad as it is, being a lighter skin colour, I’ve received a lot of hate for that,” the 22-year-old university student said.

“A lot of people have picked on the way I look, the way I speak, even coming down to having blonde hair. My hair is actually dark, I’ve just dyed it blonde."

“I think people also get very confused as to what an Acknowledgement and Welcome actually is. We’re not welcoming you to Australia; obviously you live here."

“We’re welcoming you to the traditional owners of that land and acknowledging the traditional land. And in terms of comments about overuse, I feel you have to respect everyone’s opinions, even if you may not agree."

“Being a First Nations person, I find it wonderful seeing my culture embraced. But obviously you can’t please everyone.”

Fynn is aiming to be a young role model and hopes to show “young Indigenous people that we can get up and speak”.
