"One more shot": Nick Kyrgios makes major career announcement

After two years of dealing with an injury, Nick Kyrgios has made a major announcement about his career future.

The 29-year-old Aussie tennis champion has confirmed he will be returning to the court for Australian Open in 2025, after not playing any professional tennis for 492 days.

His last match dates all the way back to June 13th in 2023, which he lost against China’s Yibing Wu before he took a step back from the court to deal with serious knee and wrist injuries.

While many fans have speculated whether he would ever return to the sport, Kyrgios made the announcement himself while speaking at South by South West (SXSW) in Sydney on Thursday.

“The injury I had was brutal,” he said as a keynote speaker on stage.

“The surgeon said I probably wouldn’t be able to play again. But I said whatever, just try and get me another 2-3 years of my career."

“Everything has gone semi-well and I will be playing the Australia Open this summer.”

While on his hiatus from playing, Kyrios has dabbled in the world of commentating, but he admitted it has been tough to sit on the sidelines for so long.

“It’s been a brutal last couple of years ... but just being out there to play in front of a home crowd ... I just want to be out there, lighting up the crowd and playing in front of my own country,” Kyrios added.

“Whether it is good or bad, it will certainly be a lot of fun, for sure. I am looking forward to it.

“My only motivation to come back and play is to try and win a grand slam, and I’ll give it one more shot.”

"The pain is unbearable": Nick Campo's family speaks out

The parents of a Perth teenager who tragically died in a car crash have started an emotional campaign for road safety in the name of their late son.

Budding footballer Nick Campo, who had just turned 18, was the rear passenger in a Toyota HiLux that rolled and collided with a Jeep Patriot in Perth’s southern suburbs on Saturday night and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Campo's parents Daniel and Bianca told 9News of their "unbearable pain" since the sudden and tragic loss of their son.

"My Nick, he was definitely one of a kind," his mum Bianca said. "I knew he was special, but he was really special to a lot of people."

"And he was a beautiful boy, and he's going to be missed by so many, so many people."

His father Daniel said his son was "the complete package" but was best known for his quick wit cheekiness.

"If you had to sum Nick up in one word, 'cheeky'," he said. "From day dot .... Cheeky, cheeky."

Sitting in the ute alongside Nick at the time of the crash were two of his teammates from the South Fremantle Football club, as well as the 17-year-old driver and one other young man.

"He loved footy, he loved cricket, he just was so committed," his mum said.

"He loved getting around all the boys, you know all the teammates. He loved being in the clubs."

The 17-year-old boy accused of being behind the wheel, who was also injured in the crash alongside one of the other passengers, is facing serious charges.

Another boy is fighting for his life in Royal Perth Hospital.

Nick's parents are praying their son's friend pulls through and don't want other families to go through what they have gone through.

"(Because) It is, it is the worst nightmare that you can imagine and the pain is unbearable," his mum said.

The family is now channelling their grief towards a road safety campaign called "Call Out for Nick".

"If it doesn't look right, that person doesn't look right to drive, the habits - it's got to be called out," his father said.

"We see it every day - young kids they think they're bulletproof, they're not."

And I'm OK with that.

"It's a conversation that needed to be had. I'm at a crossroads in my career and have reached a point where life after tennis is a prospect that excites me."

He also added that despite knowing he can still compete for titles, his body is letting him down, as he continues to recover from his knee injury in January 2023.

"I sit there and watch some of the players on tour and know within myself that this generation is not as strong as some of the players I have gone up against," he wrote.

"I know I can be one of the best in the world and win major tournaments -- if my body lets me. The fire still burns, but it's not my everything."

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist also confirmed that he won't be making himself available for this year's Paris Olympics, saying that the treatment he got from the Australian Olympic Committee in the lead-up to the 2016 Rio Games was one of the key factors.

"I was No. 13 at the time and had a genuine chance at winning a medal. For them to forbid me from representing my country for behavioural reasons is something that I just can't forget," he said.

He added that his "mentality has changed", and despite still having the desire to play for his country, his decision is final.

Kyrgios has barely been on court after withdrawing from last year's Australian Open, but he has been commentating on the tournament for Eurosport, adding that his future may be in the box, rather than on the court.

Image: Getty

"Hopefully it's permanent": Karl's surprise holiday replacement announced

Karl Stefanovic's Christmas leave replacement on the Today show was announced on Monday, when it was revealed that Dr Nick Coatsworth, Australia's former deputy chief medical officer, would be filling Stefanovic's hosting shoes from December 26, granting the veteran host a well-deserved New Year's rendezvous with his family.

However, the digital realm erupted with mixed emotions following the news, with some online users not just celebrating Stefanovic's temporary absence but actively calling for the replacement to be made permanent.

Social media platforms buzzed with comments like, 'Please make it a permanent break', and 'Complete overhaul needed', suggesting a desire for a fresh face at the helm of the popular morning show. One disgruntled user even quipped, 'Hopefully it is permanent; the only one who thinks he is funny is him. Poor co-hosts with their fake laughs.'

As the summer breeze of change swept through the Today show, co-host Sarah Abo found herself replaced for the holiday season by regular Today show reporter Mia Glover, adding an extra layer of anticipation to the show's temporary makeover.

The real thunderstorm, however, came with the surprising decision to appoint Dr Coatsworth as the temporary host. A prominent figure in the medical field, Coatsworth had been a regular contributor to Channel Nine, particularly on matters of medicine.

Reports surfaced of disquiet among viewers, claiming 'plenty of noses are out of joint' over this unconventional choice. This sentiment likely stems from the fact that Dr Coatsworth, despite his frequent appearances as the show's medical expert during the pandemic, has never before taken on the role of the show's host.

Dr Coatsworth also has a new show in the pipeline titled Do You Want to Live Forever?, set to be broadcast on Nine next year. This unexpected move only adds to the intrigue surrounding the doctor's stint as a morning show host.

This shakeup comes at a critical juncture for the Today show, as its arch-rival, Sunrise, gears up for its 20th year of dominating the breakfast ratings war. According to the 2022 OzTam survey, Sunrise boasted an average national daily audience of 397,000 viewers, proudly claiming to be '31 per cent bigger than its nearest competitor.' Today, on the other hand, has struggled in recent years to close the gap with Sunrise, facing challenges exacerbated by a revolving door of presenters on the Nine show.

Images: Nine

Nick Kyrgios' honest thoughts on Shane Warne's open letter

In 2015, late cricket legend Shane Warne posted an open letter Nick Kyrgios on social media, calling out the then hot-headed tennis player's fiery behaviour off-court.

"Dear Nick, we all realise you're only 20 and have a lot to learn buddy, but please don't waste your talent," the letter began.

"Everyone in the world, especially us Australians want to respect you. You need to respect the game of tennis and yourself. We all make mistakes.

"You're testing our patience mate, show us what you're made of and how hungry you are to be the best in the world. It's time to step up and start winning, no excuses," he added in the scathing letter.

"We all make mistakes. It's how we learn from them and the way we conduct ourselves when we lose that shows true character. You're testing our patience mate," he concluded.

A then 20-year-old Kyrgios had just beat Spanish champion Rafael Nadal during the 2015 Wimbledon, but also attracted a lot of controversy after insulting Stan Wawrinka at a tournament in Montreal, Canada.

This was a particularly difficult time in Kyrgios' career, as he was suspended for 28-days and got a $34,705 fine from the ATP.

Since the incident, Kyrgios has managed to get his professional life back on track, and in a recent interview with Piers Morgan on his show Uncensored, the tennis star shared that he never read the letter.

"I saw it and didn't read it. I'm never going to be the first one to go out on social media and put someone down," he told the host.

He added that he believed that Warne would be proud of how far he's come.

"I look back at that letter and at how far I've come and I'd say he would be proud for sure. I’ve had a pretty successful career. I feel I've won a lot more than I've lost."

Images: Getty

"Safe for now": Hugh Sheridan caught up in horrific Israel attacks

Hugh Sheridan has assured his followers he is "safe for now" after being stuck in Israel at the time Hamas launched a horror attack on the country.

The Aussie actor was holidaying in Israel with friends in celebration of the Jewish public holiday Simchat Torah when the attacks broke out, in which Palestinian militant group Hamas launched thousands of rockets from Gaza.

Hundreds of people have been killed and a "significant" number of people have been taken captive.

Sheridan took to Instagram to share the details of his terrifying ordeal, while reassuring his followers he is safe in the Middle Eastern country.

“A few hours ago everyone was living life completely normal in Israel,” Sheridan wrote.

“It was a big Jewish holiday yesterday, one week after new year. I met a family who had 150 fly in for their wedding tomorrow. We were at a bbq yesterday with young people who at this very minute are on their way to Gaza to fight."

“A few hours later, this country is at war. Their lives have completely changed in an instant. It’s unbelievable how quickly and brutal the attack has been. With no warning. My heart breaks. I’m in the stairwell so safe for now. X love you all.”

Sheridan later revealed he was struggling to find a cab to get to the airport to escape the dangerous fighting.

“Desperately looking for a cab to the airport to try and get out. The missiles were way too close,” he wrote alongside a video of the “eerily quiet” street.

Sheridan again updated his followers to let them know he and his friends had successfully fled the country, and were on a plane to Athens in Greece.

Once arriving safely in Greece, Sheridan spoke to Karl Stefanovic and Sarah About on Today, admitting he feels guilty leaving after meeting lots of wonderful people on his trip.

"I feel sad I'm not there, I feel guilty for getting out but I knew what we had to do but it's really hard thinking about all the wonderful people that we met and how dramatically their lives have changed in one day," he said.

"These are such wonderful people - every single person I have met so far has been called or voluntarily going to fight for their lives and it is just incredible to be in a country that feels very much like Australia and see it change within hours."

Since the attacks began on Saturday, at least 600 Israelis have been killed and more than 2000 are injured, according to the country’s media, while the Israeli military confirmed a "significant" number of civilians are being held hostage in Gaza.

Israel’s Major General Ghasan Alyan said, “Hamas opened the gates of hell on the Gaza Strip, Hamas made the decision and Hamas will bear the responsibility and pay the price.”

“I run on bananas and coke cola": Kyrgios wades into doping debate

Nick Kyrgios has raised eyebrows over his out-of-pocket comments on the recent doping scandal surrounding the world of tennis.

The Aussie champion spoke over current testing protocols in the wake of Romanian tennis player Simon Halep being slapped with a four-year ban from the game for doping offences.

Naturally, many tennis champions from around the world have put in their two cents on the recent ban, as Greek player Maria Sakkari called out the measures for being "scary".

She told a tennis news site, “One thing I can tell you for sure is the way they’re handling every situation with any player, any athlete, it’s just scary.”

“We’re gonna get to a point where we’re not even gonna be taking electrolytes. Thankfully, I haven’t been in that position. I never want to be. I’ve been very careful with everything that has to do with supplements. But I don’t know what the process is, how things are done behind closed doors."

Nick Kyrgios was quick to jump in to the debate, responding to Sakkari's comments on Twitter saying, “Ehhhh not really lol.”

“I run on bananas and coke cola in 5 set battles. And my record in them speaks for itself."

“Maybe players should just stop taking shady sh*t. Look yourself in the mirror at the end of the day and say yep I did it right. Not hard.”

Fans soon came after Kyrgios, but he doubled down.

Kyrgios responded to one Twitter user’s sledge by posting, “I’d imagine if I was taking similar things to be banned for 4 years I’d have about 5 slams. Potato”.

Kyrgios has had a difficult season as he has been forced to take time off to recover from injuries to his wrist and knees.

He has urged his fans to be patient as he works on his recovery, as he is determined to get back on the court.

"To my millions of fans out there, I guess we just have to be patient,” Kyrgios wrote in an Instagram story, accompanied by a picture of him in the gym.

“Trust me, I still have some fire left in the tank, my body just needs time to recover and get back.”

Stevie Nicks faces wild backlash over Hawaii fires post

Stevie Nicks, the celebrated icon from Fleetwood Mac, has drawn a mixed response among her admirers due to her extensive reflection on the Maui fires, with even her most devoted supporters not hesitating to express their concerns.

The legendary artist took to social media to convey her thoughts regarding the tragic Maui fires, a subject close to her heart. However, her detailed account of how the catastrophe impacted her, particularly in relation to her niece's disrupted holiday plans, has drawn a divisive reaction.

In a post entitled "“Lahaina is not gone ~ It is just away,” Nicks opened up about her personal connection to the coastal town that fell victim to the destructive fires, claiming the lives of at least 96 individuals.

“As I am sure you have heard – the island, Maui, where I own a house I have been staying at since the 80s – and the small village, city, most magical place on earth, Lahaina, burned to the ground over the last few days,” she wrote.

She further explained the distressing situation involving her young niece, her spouse, and their child, who had just embarked on a much-needed vacation before the niece's return to her studies in psychology. Regrettably, their vacation was cut short due to the onset of the fire.

Nicks also delved into the profound connection that the members of Fleetwood Mac share with Maui. “This island, in so many ways, defines Fleetwood Mac and me and our families. My truth was that I wanted a house here just so I could spend time in Lahaina walking the streets; visiting the art galleries – sitting on the rock wall – Most all the opals I wear on my fingers came from a store on Front Street. I hope the sweet lady who owned that store was able to grab all her opals and run. I hope she made it out.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Stevie Nicks (@stevienicks)

The response among her fan base has been polarised. Some voiced disappointment with Nicks for placing emphasis on her niece's disrupted vacation rather than the tragic loss of nearly 100 lives in the fires. They also questioned the absence of any links or information directing her substantial Instagram following, which numbers 1.4 million, towards aiding the fire survivors.

One Instagram user commented, “I’ve been a Stevie fan forever and a day but this is Completely tone deaf! There are people who have LOST THEIR HOMES, their livelihood and their loved ones. Regular people – not rich, and not tourists. “Ruining” someone’s well deserved holiday is the absolutely LEAST of it all. True colours are shining and it’s such a disappointment.”

While detractors were vocal, others stood up for Nicks, contending that her personal connection to the island warranted her sharing her story just as much as anyone else – with one post in particular offering a particularly insightful explanation:

"People commenting with criticism: I sincerely understand but what you don’t realize is that this is a woman who doesn’t go on the internet or understand how any of that works. She hand writes these notes to express her heart and has an assistant post them. She has always given back without advertising it. The concept of crowdfunding donations on social media is something she really just has no idea about. If she knew better, I could understand the frustration but she’s just not a part of social media discourse whatsoever. I can guarantee that she is not only giving back but reaching directly out to individuals she has crossed paths with there over the years. Stevie has always been charitable, but has never been a citizen of the internet."

Images: Instagram

We travelled together on tour last year and we’re going again this year.”

Hatzi has her own exciting new venture as she is now a new face of Bondi Sands, which Kyrgios teased on social media could lead to his “early retirement”.

“He’s really supportive, I’m really lucky to have him,” she said.

Hatzi also touched on her boyfriend’s previous comments that she is “the one”.

In February 2022, Kyrgios was asked by a fan if he knew Hatzi was the one when he first saw her, which he responded with “yes”.

She smiled at the comment but revealed that the pair were not planning their engagement “yet”.

“I mean, if it happens, it happens, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t,” she said.

“I’m just going with the flow and we’re happy and healthy and, yeah, that’s all that matters.”
