Former The Voice contestant wins Melbourne Cup

A former The Voice contestant has won the Melbourne Cup.

Two years ago, Robbie Dolan, who was in Rita Ora's team, placed in the top 24 of The Voice Australia, and now he has celebrated an even bigger win after taking home the Melbourne Cup.

Dolan, who was born in Ireland and is a keen jockey, first moved to Australia in 2016 when he was still figuring out his career path.

“I came here eight years ago with an ambition of just having a crack,” the 28-year-old told the Today show on Wednesday morning.

“Really just having a go, working hard and seeing what happens – and I’m sitting here with the Melbourne Cup.”

While he had little luck on the reality TV show as he got eliminated in the sing-offs, his horse racing career has been more fruitful.

Dolan started his career at the age of 17 in Ireland, where he participated in a nine-month training program and worked as an apprentice for about three seasons before trying his luck in Australia.

Both his father and grandfather were successful riders in Ireland and it seems that racing is in his blood, after he and his five-year-old gelding Knight’s Choice pushed past Zardozi and nudged Warp Speed out of the winning spot 20m before the finish line.

While he has celebrated the big win, the jockey remains humble as he revealed the key to winning the Cup was "a lot of luck".

“You know, I just needed the runs to open in front of me, and thankfully they did," he said on the Today show.

Plus, it helps when you've got a “good little horse” like Knight’s Choice. “He’s an underrated little horse and proved a lot of people wrong yesterday.”

As for his singing career Dolan may need to give it a rest for the time being, saying: “My voice is half gone from last night."

Images: Instagram

Boy's tragic death in school crash sparks incredible community response

The 11-year-old boy who tragically died after a car crashed through his school's gate has been identified, with a family friend sharing more details about the horrific accident.

Jack Davey was sitting with friends when a car slammed through a fence and into a group of Year 5 students at Auburn South Primary School on Tuesday afternoon.

He was critically injured and died on the way to hospital, while four other children were also injured.

School mum and friend of the family Lucy Pristel told Yahoo News the shocking incident has "affected" the entire "close-knit" community.

“I have no words, to be honest with you. They are the most beautiful family. They would do anything for anyone,” she said.

Lucy's own 11-year-old son, who is also a student at the school and played basketball with Jack, witnessed the tragedy unfold before his eyes.

"Unfortunately a lot of the kids saw what happened," she said. "It's affected everybody. The school has offered councillors to us all, so there's been a lot of support. We're a close-knit community."

To help support the grieving family, Lucy, along with some of the other school mums, decided to launch a GoFundMe to help "ease the burden" of funeral costs, adding, "We just wanted to make life as easy as possible."

In a matter of hours, the fundraiser has exceeded its goal, and at the time of writing over $140,000 has bee donated by the community.

Lucy recalled the moment she found out about the horror that unfolded at the school on Tuesday afternoon, saying she didn't realise the extent of what had happened at first.

"I actually drove past the school after it happened and didn't think much of it," she admitted. "Then I started hearing about it."

"I ran down to the school... you could see parents for at least 300, 400 metres and I saw everyone hugging. That's when I knew something happened at our school [and not one of the others close by]."

Ever since then, "everyone has just bound together," she said sharing the "pure horror" felt by everyone.

Today reporter walloped by Melbourne Cup horse

A hilarious on-air moment has been captured by the Today Show, as a reporter was shoved by a winning race horse.

Christine Ahern was reporting live from Flemington on Monday to celebrate the launch of the 2024 Melbourne Cup Carnival, as she got up close and personal with Twilight Payment, who won the Cup in 2020.

Perhaps not used to all the attention - given the 2020 Cup had no trackside crowd due to the pandemic - as the horse made his TV debut on Today, things quickly went awry.

"Can I say I'm normally quite nervous around horses, but Twilight Payment is absolutely beautiful and as you can see, quite a calm horse as well," Christine started as she cautiously petted the large animal.

Twilight Payment patiently munched on some carrot as Christine spoke with Today host Karl and Sarah back in the studio, but when the horse's snacks ran out, he got a little fidgety.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Uproar over council's bin "shaming" move

As councils around the country make big changes to the way we dispose of waste, one council's move has left an entire street in Melbourne "offended".

On Wednesday morning, Essendon mum Kali took out her bins and thought nothing more of her weekly habit. It was when she came back after a coffee run that she spotted a tag that had "oh no" written in big red letters.

"We found items that don't belong in your mixed recycling bin," the note read, identifying reusable shopping bags as the culprit.

When she looked around all but one household on her street had the same yellow note.

"I came back and saw all these tags on the bins, I thought 'That's a bit weird'," she told Yahoo News Australia.

"It was the talk of the street," she said, after finding out that fellow residents were in "uproar" over the tags.

Kali, a mum-of-two, has lived in her home for over nine years and said this was the first time she saw the tag on her bin.

"It's just a bizarre thing to do," she said.

"I thought it was funny that I got bin shamed. I'm sure we're all guilty of [recycling incorrectly], it's an easy mistake.

"Our whole street was embarrassed about it," she added, saying "other neighbours were more offended".

Kali is adamant that she didn't do anything wrong, as she ensures the bags in her bin were made out of paper, but said that "you don’t know who is putting things in your bin."

A council spokesperson told Yahoo that the move was made to "inform" residents.

"Council’s intention is to provide information to people at their homes through our kerbside bin education program to create more awareness, so everyone in the community can recycle right," the spokesperson said.

"We understand that recycling can be confusing and that there may be a misunderstanding in what can and can’t go into a recycling bin."

Images: Yahoo News

"It's just not OK": Parking inspectors under fire for fining innocent drivers

Melbourne drivers are being hit with parking fines despite not doing anything wrong, raising questions about the legitimacy of the infringement notices.

Emma Hodgkinson from Essendon told 9News that she was fined for supposedly overstaying in a two-hour parking zone.

"I was furious, it's just not OK" she told the publication.

Hodkinson had only left her house 40 minutes prior to the time stamp on the fine, and used CCTV footage from her home to prove it.

"When I saw the timecode on the footage and I compared it to the time on the ticket I realised I hadn't done anything wrong and it was their mistake," she said.

Many other drivers have had similar experiences, with one man from Richmond saying he received a $99 penalty earlier this month, despite having almost an hour left on his Pay Stay app.

Another driver was fined by Stonnington Council who said he had parked for more than two hours even though he'd only been there for about 20 minutes.

In most of these examples, many other cars in the same area had also been fined.

"I was able to prove I was innocent but how are [the other drivers] going to be able to prove that?" Hodgkinson said.

Council Watch representative Dean Hurlston said the reason why innocent drivers are being fined could be because council parking inspectors have to hit their quotas.

"We know the job of a parking inspector is well paid for good reason," he told 9News.

"They definitely have quotas. Councils need money, they're cash strapped. This is a way to gouge and raise revenue."

If you've been unfairly fined, it is important to collect as much evidence as possible, including photos and screenshots.

Image: Nine News

Millions warned as dangerous disease spreads in Melbourne

Health authorities have issued an urgent warning to Victorians after multiple people have been admitted to hospital with severe symptoms.

Victoria's Department of Health has revealed it is investigating an outbreak of Legionnaires disease after a "significant increase" in cases across Melbourne since Friday.

Over just three days, 22 cases of the disease have been confirmed with another six cases suspected.

Most of the cases are in adults aged over 40, with many of them requiring hospitalisation and intensive care for severe pneumonia.

Health authorities are now searching for the source of the outbreak, as the health department said in a statement, "Legionnaires' disease can cause a chest infection with symptoms of fever, chills, cough, headache and muscle aches and pains. Other atypical symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and confusion."

"All cases have visited or reside in metropolitan Melbourne. Those most at risk are adults aged over 40 years, especially people with other medical conditions or immune compromise, or who smoke."

The source of the outbreak is not yet known but investigations are underway to determine where it has come from.

Legionnaires' disease is spread by breathing in fine droplets of water that contain legionella bacteria, and is not commonly spread from person-to-person or by drinking contaminated water.

The Department of Health is urging anyone who lives in, works in or has visited metropolitan Melbourne and surrounding areas to seek urgent medical care if they develop symptoms.

Sombre Aussie site tops global list of most unusual abandoned places

Each year, thousands of people travel to famous abandoned buildings and hotspots to explore what were once important landmarks.

Some deserted sites are more popular than others, as these ten sites received tens of thousands of visitors each year.

Buzludzha, Bulgaria

The Buzludzha Monument in central Bulgaria has been dubbed the tenth most famous abandoned place in the world, each year welcoming over 18,000 people.

The site was constructed in 1981 and used by the Bulgarian communist government, and was in use until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989.

Ohio State Reformatory, USA

After first opening in 1898, the goal of the Ohio State Reformatory was to truly "reform" and rehabilitate its inmates.

The facility was closed in 1990, and each year attracts more than 21,000 visitors.

Gereja Ayam, Indonesia

The uniquely shaped house of prayer in Central Java continues to be a popular tourist attraction in Indonesia, welcoming more than 50,000 travellers each year.

Construction on the church was never completed after work was halted in 2000.

Lago di Resia Bell Tower, Italy

The 14-century sunken bell tower can be found near the border of Switzerland, emerging from the water from a sunken village where travellers claim they can hear bells tolling, even though there are no bells in the tower.

The lonely (and probably haunted) tower receives more than 54,000 tourists each year.

Canfranc, Spain

The abandoned railway station is located in the Spanish municipality of Canfranc, close to the French border and once was a major hub for cross-border railway traffic.

It first opened in 1928, but closed its doors by 1970 before it was reimagined as a hotel.

Beelitz Military Hospital, Germany

The large hospital complex was first built in 1898 as a sanatorium, but was transformed into a hospital at the beginning of WWI and has been abandoned since 1990.

It's understood Hitler was treated here after being wounded in the Battle of Somme, which could be the reason more than 64,000 travellers flock there each year.

Eastern State Penitentiary, USA

The prison in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is described as one of the country's most historic prisons and has housed some famous prisoners such as Al Capone.

The prison was closed in 1971 and is tagged on social media by more than 79,000 every year.

Croix-Rouge, Paris

Also known as the Red Cross, this Paris train station has been abandoned since 1939 after France entered WWII.

The station was only functional for 16 years, and welcomes more than 95,000 curious travellers each year.

Teufelsberg, Germany

Teufelsberg was one of the largest listening towers in the world during the Cold war.

The site was closed in 1972, but still receives around 128,000 every year.

Port Arthur, Australia

More than a quarter of a million visitors travel to Port Arthur in Tasmania each year.

The site itself was first opened as a timber station in 1830 and is known as a symbol of the country's convict past.

"What a joke": Backlash over new strict speed limit

Melbourne residents have lashed out at a local council over the controversial decision to reduce the speed limit on bust roads.

Every street in Fitzroy and Collingwood, except state-managed roads such as major thoroughfares, are now under the new strict speed limit of a mere 30 kilometres an hour, which has been enforced by the Yarra City Council.

Thoroughfares that are currently exempt from the 30km/h limit include Johnston Street, Nicholson Street, Hoddle Street, Alexandra Parade and Victoria Parade, although the council is working hard to bring the speed limits on these major roads down to 40km/h or 60km/h.

Yarra City Council Mayor, Edward Crossland, said there is clear evidence that reducing speed limits will lessen the number of road accidents and save lives.

“We want to make our streets safer and better places for people of all ages and abilities whether you are walking, wheeling, cycling or driving. 30km can have a huge benefit and we know there is a lot of support for this initiative across our community,” he said.

“Research shows that a person walking is at least twice as likely to be killed by a driver travelling at 40km than at 30km and that safer speed limits in urban areas has minimal impact on travel time."

The council first began trialling the 30km/h speed limit in 2018 in northern parts of Fitzroy and Collingwood, and brought the number of crashes down by 52 percent over the first 12 months.

Despite the evidence that reduced speeds help the community at large, not everyone is impressed by the change, with social media users claiming the lower speed limit will “never be enforced”.

Another claimed, “When the police commissioner comes out and says it’s ridiculous and nobody will follow the limits then yeah, fair to say it won’t be enforced.”

In 2023, Victorian Police chief commissioner Shane Patton, told ABC radio that changing the speed limit to 30km/h was “not the answer”.

“I think no one’s going to obey it. It’s ridiculous,” he said.

Social media users have branded the change an attempt at “revenue raising”, with one commenter saying: “Just another way to nab us with fines! All about the revenue.”

“What a joke,” another person said, while one claimed people might as well start pushing their cars if the speed limit is so low.

However, there are also those that have praised the council’s decision, branding it a “great initiative”.

“Great news! More traffic calming please,” one person said.

Peter Dutton defends comparing pro-Palestine rally to Port Arthur massacre

Peter Dutton has doubled down on controversial comments he made comparing a pro-Palestine rally to the Port Arthur massacre in 1996.

The leader of the opposition sparked fierce criticism fort he remarks he made when discussing the rise of anti-Semitism in Australia as the Israel-Palestine war rages on.

He compared a pro-Palestine protest that took place outside Sydney Opera House on October 9th, just days after the first attacks by Hamas, to the deadly massacre in Tasmania in which 35 people were killed which prompted major gun reforms in Australia under the Howard government.

Dutton later repeated the comments, insisting Mr Howard’s response had been “strong” and claimed Mr Albanese has not done enough to stem the rise in anti-Semitism.

The Opposition Leader appeared on Today on Friday morning where he again defended his comments when asked if he had gone too far with the comparison.

“The point I was making, which is absolutely a legitimate one, is that I thought this was a time for the Prime Minister (Anthony Albanese) to show leadership and to step up,” Mr Dutton said.

“I think, with John Howard, who stood up at a point of national importance for our country, demonstrated leadership and changed the course of history for the better. The Prime Minister has allowed this rise of anti-Semitism in our country.”

“I don’t resile from that at all.”

Mr Dutton’s fury was sparked by comments made by the Foreign Minister Penny Wong in her own speech earlier this week, which left the door open for Australia to back Palestinian statehood in the UN.

“Penny Wong never went to cabinet with this proposal. It’s not agreed to by the Palestinian leaders here in Australia,” he said.

Government Services Minister Bill Shorten then chimed in on the debate, arguing there was nothing new in Senator Wong’s comments as the war in Palestine continued to claim thousands of innocent lives.

“Labor has had as its policy for a very long time, the whole time I’ve been a member of the Labor Party, support for a two state solution,” he told Nine.

But he said it was a grave mistake to conflate Port Arthur with the “unacceptable” rise in anti-Semitism.

“I think probably if he had his time again in the privacy of his own head, he would probably not do (that),” Mr Shorten said.

“They’re two separate issues. Port Arthur was a shocking, murderous, evil act in Australia. And John Howard certainly spoke up about it."

“I think Peter, you know, has got to make his point. That’s his job. But I think he should work with the Prime Minister to call out inflammatory language here.”

Mr Dutton went on to clarify he was just trying to make a parallel between the two leaders’ responses.

“John Howard stood up for our country at a time when he needed moral clarity. He did that he changed the course of history with gun laws,” he said.

“That’s the parallel that I’m making to the absolute absence of leadership from the Prime Minister at the moment, which has given rise to those in the Jewish community talking about feeling unsafe in our country.”

And it wasn’t until we heard all the sirens that we came out."

Passengers onboard the hot air balloon have been offered counselling by the operator, with officers currently preparing a report for the coroner.

Images: 7News/ Daily Mail

Aussie street crowned "world's coolest"

Global media company Time Out have released their official list of the world's coolest streets, with one busy street in Melbourne's inner north coming in first place.

What makes a street cool? Well, according to the publication, each street's food offerings, drink options, cultural delights, nightlife and overall sense of community are the main factors that were taken into consideration when they made their list.

To create the 2024 lineup, the publication had their global team of local expert editors and contributors each make a case for the coolest street in their city.

Melbourne's High Street claimed the top spot local Time Out Melbourne editor Leah Glynn praising the road's "epic restaurants, hidden bars, live music venues and boutique shops".

Glynn said that the street’s “bona fide cool status” comes down to one thing - “its unique, something-for-everyone local businesses”.

The street itself is easily accessible from the CBD via the 86 tram line and criss-crosses the suburbs of Northcote, Thornbury and Preston.

Hollywood Rd, one of the oldest streets in Hong Kong came in second. Pre-dating LA's famous entertainment district, the street itself is home to incredible restaurants including Michelin-starred Tate Dining Room.

It's also home to the Man Mo Temple and the Mid-Levels Escalators, the world's longest outdoor covered escalator system.

East Eleventh in Austin came in third, as it "encapsulates the city's spirit" for packing so many venues in a short quarter-mile.

One other Australian street made it into the list of the top 30 coolest streets and that street is Sydney’s Foster St, which came in 23rd.

“Along with neighbouring Campbell St, it’s part of the inner city precinct known as the Hollywood Quarter,” Time Out said.

“Despite the dazzling name, the quarter brings low-key cool vibes, and is bordered by Central, Thai Town, and cool suburbs Surry Hills and Darlinghurst.”

Here is Time Out's Top 10 coolest streets:

High St, Melbourne

Hollywood Rd, Hong Kong

East Eleventh, Austin

Guatemala St, Buenos Aires

Commercial Dr, Vancouver

Jalan Petaling, Kuala Lumpur

Rua da Boavista, Lisbon

Arnaldo Quintela, Rio de Janiero

Chazawa-dori, Tokyo

Consell de Cent, Barcelona

Images: South China Morning Post via Getty Images

"Pathetic": Council slammed after move against FREE health program

A woman who runs a free mental health yoga program has been ordered to pay the council $10,000 because her classes at St Kilda beach in Melbourne have become too popular.

The City of Port Phillip Council was slammed for their actions after they told Eliza Hilmer she must pay them hundreds of dollars per session for her Feel Good Flows classes.

Hilmer, who does not make a profit from the classes, said she started the program during the pandemic to help people manage their mental health.

“I play by the rules as much as I can,” Hilmer told Yahoo News, adding that she acquired personal trainer permit as requested by the council.

“We’ve been operating as an outdoor gathering for mental health practices more than anything, and it’s been really incredible."

The classes, which initially attracted a few people, has gained a bit of traction with around 50 to 80 regular attendees.

Hilmer encourages her attendees to leave a donation and provides free hot drinks and a live musician at the biweekly sessions.

Because of its popularity, the council have classified Feel Good Flows as a commercial event, as the classes exceed the number of people covered by Hilmer's personal training license, and she was ordered to pay $400 a session.

Hilmer was also given the option to cap the sessions at 15 people a time, but she said that "this isn't an option" as “many vulnerable people” rely on the service.

With Hilmer having to pay three months upfront to keep classes running, the total adds up to $10,000, and locals are furious.

"Another pathetic decision by useless bureaucrats,” one wrote on social media.

“This council is being very mean spirited. Leave her alone!!”

“Keep on going love don’t bow to the council,” a third added.

Despite the outrage and being asked to pay to host her free yoga sessions, Hilmer remains positive.

“I don’t want to fight,” she said.

“The council can be the solution”.

Port Phillip Mayor Heather Cunsolo replied saying that while she was "delighted" to see so many taking part in yoga sessions, "the business needs to adhere to its Personal Training Licence" to "ensure our popular public spaces remain available, safe and enjoyable for everyone."

“We encourage Feel Good Flows to look at hosting additional yoga sessions on the foreshore to support its growing popularity," the Port Phillip mayor said.

“Other businesses operating along the foreshore pay a licence fee for the use of public open space and adhere to the 15 person limit per session.

"These capacity limits help provide fair access for many businesses operating with a Personal Training Licence, while minimising any potential disruption for visitors to our foreshore."

She added that she has been in contact with Feel Good Flows, and are happy to discuss details further.

"If the petition is sent to Council the matter will be heard in the Council Chamber.”

Images: Instagram
