Son's sad farewell to beloved Aussie icon

Eileen “Red” Bond, beloved Australian socialite and devoted matriarch, has been farewelled in a moving service at Fremantle’s St Patrick’s Basilica, remembered for her unwavering commitment to “faith, family, friends and fun”.

Hundreds gathered on Monday to pay their respects to the former wife of entrepreneur Alan Bond, who died on July 2 aged 87 following a stroke. The service celebrated a woman who brought colour, warmth and strength to the lives of those around her.

Delivering the eulogy, son John Bond described his mother’s deep Catholic faith and love of St Patrick’s as a guiding force through life’s darkest moments – none more painful than the loss of her daughter, Susanne.

“This place gave her strength to get through the tough times in life, of which she had a few,” he said. “In times like these, this church was her refuge.”

Known affectionately as “Red” for her bright red hair as a child, Ms Bond was remembered as a fiercely loyal mother and a friend to many.

“To mum, family could do no wrong even when we obviously had,” John said with affection. “She would brook no criticism whatsoever of family members.”

Her generosity and openness touched people from all walks of life. “She had an incredible knack of befriending anybody, at any time, in any circumstances,” John said. “She was vitally interested in people’s lives, and I think that was the key.”

Eileen met Alan Bond as a teenager and he converted to Catholicism to marry her. The couple went on to raise four children – John, Craig, Susanne and Jody – and built a life of both privilege and public scrutiny. Through her husband’s spectacular business highs and painful lows (including bankruptcy and prison) Ms Bond remained a steadfast and loyal presence.

“She never really changed,” John said. “Wonderful, exuberant, engaging and loyal to the end, she will be terribly missed.”

Bond University, founded by Alan Bond in 1987, also paid tribute to Ms Bond. Vice chancellor and president Tim Brailsford remembered her as a “great friend and fierce supporter” of the university.

“The room was always brighter once Red had entered,” he said. “Her cheeky sense of humour entertained many a crowd.”

Though she lived a life that spanned continents and social circles, those closest to Eileen Bond said her truest joys came from home – her faith, her children, and the love she carried for all who knew her.

Images: 96FM

"Out cold": Hugh Grant naps through Wimbledon drama after chat with the Queen

It was one of the hottest matches of the Wimbledon quarter-finals – on court and apparently off – but for Hugh Grant, it may have been just a little too warm and soothing.

The ever-dashing Love Actually star, 64, became an unlikely viral sensation this week after he was caught on camera nodding off in the Royal Box during the men’s quarter-final clash between Novak Djokovic and Flavio Cobolli.

Yes, while Djokovic and Cobolli were trading blistering shots, Grant was trading consciousness for a peaceful snooze, head tilted, sunglasses on and dreams possibly filled with tennis balls and polite applause.

The moment, of course, did not go unnoticed. BBC cameras captured the actor mid-slouch, just moments after he’d been spotted chatting amiably with Queen Camilla – which, let’s be honest, is probably exhausting work for anyone before lunch.

He had arrived at the All England Club with his wife, Anna Eberstein, both appearing in good spirits as they smiled, mingled and did all the necessary celebrity waving required in the Royal Box. But somewhere between “Hello Your Majesty” and “Advantage Djokovic”, the siren song of a padded seat and 26-degree heat proved too powerful.

BBC Sport couldn’t resist sharing the snoozy spectacle on social media, posting the clip with the caption: “It’s all got a bit too much for Hugh Grant,” along with the obligatory laughing and sleeping emojis. Predictably, the internet went berserk.

Outrage quickly rallied among the very-online tennis purists. “COBOLLI I think HUGH GRANT owes you a massive apology,” one dramatic viewer huffed, as if the actor had personally insulted the sport with a stray snore. Another lamented, “T**ts like him… don’t deserve [Wimbledon tickets]!!!” – bold words from someone tweeting from a beanbag chair.

But many others simply delighted in the absurdity. “Hugh Grant asleep in the Royal Box is the best thing I’ve seen at #WIMBLEDON this year!! I love this man!!” wrote one fan, while another quipped: “Now why Hugh Grant look like he's asleep at Wimbledon; Someone wake up Hugh Grant, dude is out cold.”

To be fair, Wimbledon is as much about tradition and strawberries as it is about intense focus, and if anyone can pull off a mid-match nap in a suit and tie, it’s Hugh Grant.

No word yet on whether he dreamed of Queen Camilla offering him a lukewarm Pimms, or if he simply mistook Centre Court for a very exclusive in-flight lounge.

Either way, Wimbledon 2025 now has a new highlight: Hugh Grant, the man who slept through a tie-break and into our hearts.

Images: BBC Sports / Nine's Wide World of Sports

King Charles unveils new memorial to Queen Elizabeth II

King Charles and Queen Camilla have honoured the memory of Queen Elizabeth II during Royal Week in Scotland, unveiling a memorial stone in the same cathedral where the late monarch briefly lay in rest before her final journey to London.

On Wednesday, the royal couple attended a solemn ceremony inside Edinburgh’s historic St Giles’ Cathedral, pausing in quiet reflection before the black slate memorial, engraved with the ER cypher, the Scottish crown, and the dates Her Majesty's coffin rested on the cathedral's Holy Table.

St Giles’ Cathedral holds deep significance for the Royal Family and the public alike. After Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle on September 8, 2022, her body was taken to the cathedral, where more than 33,000 people filed past to pay their respects.

It was also the setting for poignant public moments of mourning, including the "Vigil of the Princes", when the late Queen’s four children – King Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward – stood guard around her coffin. Later, all eight of her grandchildren repeated the symbolic vigil in Westminster Hall.

On Wednesday, Their Majesties were flanked by members of the Royal Company of Archers, the monarch’s ceremonial bodyguards in Scotland, and joined by clergy including Reverend Dr Scott Rennie, minister of St Giles’, who led a short dedication.

“It has been a great honour and privilege to welcome Their Majesties… for such a special event,” Dr Rennie said. “Our sincere desire is that this memorial stone will offer… encouragement to live a life of commitment and service to others… as Her Late Majesty did.”

Queen Camilla wore a soft powder blue coatdress, while King Charles was dressed in grey as they stood together at the simple yet poignant stone. At one moment during the ceremony, the couple bowed their heads solemnly in remembrance.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Royal Family (@theroyalfamily)

Plans are also underway in London to honour Queen Elizabeth II – Britain’s longest-serving monarch – with permanent memorials in St James’s Park, just outside Buckingham Palace. Meet the young princess and future queen who's moving to Australia

In a delightful development that has captivated royal watchers and Australians alike, Norway's Princess Ingrid Alexandra is preparing to start an exciting new chapter – right here in Australia. (Sydney, to be more precise!)

The 21-year-old royal, who is second in line to the Norwegian throne, will soon trade Oslo’s snowy landscapes for Sydney’s sunny shores as she embarks on full-time university study. The Royal House of Norway confirmed that the princess will begin a Bachelor of Social Science at the University of Sydney this August, with a focus on international relations and political economy.

Adding a touch of tradition to this modern tale, Princess Ingrid Alexandra will be living on campus at the prestigious St Andrew's College. In a warm message to students, the college principal, Dr Daniel Tyler, encouraged the community to respect the princess’s privacy as she settles into campus life.

While the Norwegian royal family may be lesser-known in Australia compared to their British or Danish counterparts, that’s expected to change quickly. Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Ingrid’s mother, also has ties to Australia, having studied at Wangaratta High School in Victoria as a teenager. Now, it’s her daughter’s turn to embrace life Down Under.

Born in Oslo in 2004, Princess Ingrid Alexandra is poised to make history as Norway's first queen regnant in over 600 years. Her grandfather, King Harald V, currently holds the throne as Europe’s oldest reigning monarch at 88. Ingrid is the eldest child of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit and has a younger brother, Prince Sverre Magnus.

Far from a traditional royal upbringing, Princess Ingrid has forged a path that blends duty, discipline and adventure. Just this April, she completed 15 months of military service, earning respect as an engineer soldier and rifleman with the Norwegian Army's Brigade North. “You are much stronger together,” she told Norwegian media of the experience. “Without [my team], I would not have enjoyed myself as much here.”

Ingrid’s move to Australia will pause her official royal duties for up to three years, though she is expected to return home during breaks. She has only recently begun taking on regular public roles, including a landmark appearance at a state banquet earlier this year and joining her family on the royal palace balcony to celebrate Norway’s National Day.

Passionate about the environment and global affairs from a young age, Princess Ingrid’s academic focus aligns with her growing commitment to public service. She began official engagements as a child, attending World Environment Day at just five years old, and by age 11 she had already christened a rescue vessel for the Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue.

And she’s not just a scholar or a soldier – she's also a sports fan. A talented surfer, Ingrid was named Norway’s junior surfing champion in 2020. She’s also an avid skier and kickboxer, embodying a refreshingly modern image of royalty.

With a surfboard possibly in one hand and a textbook in the other, Princess Ingrid Alexandra’s time in Sydney promises to be a uniquely royal adventure – and Australia will be watching with warm anticipation.

Images: Instagram

"Mischievous Moley": Camilla welcomes new palace puppy!

Queen Camilla has officially welcomed a new four-legged rascal into the royal ranks: Moley, an irresistibly mischievous puppy recently adopted from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

The Queen’s newest canine companion, who reportedly enjoys royal slippers a bit too much, arrives six months after the sad passing of her beloved Jack Russell, Beth, in November 2024. Sources say Beth was the household’s “Chief Cuddle Officer”, and her absence left a biscuit-shaped hole in Queen Camilla’s heart.

But fear not! Moley is here – bringing chaos, charm and apparently an uncanny ability to find treats hidden three rooms away.

An official Instagram post (yes, even royal dogs get grid space) announced Moley’s debut, noting that the perky pup will be honoured at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show. That’s right: honoured. Because nothing says “welcome to the monarchy” like having your name engraved on a brick path among begonias.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Royal Family (@theroyalfamily)

The new Dog Garden installation, a collaboration between the Royal Horticultural Society and BBC Radio 2, promises lush grass, shady trees and – thankfully – no royal corgis to compete for squeaky toys. Moley’s name will be permanently etched alongside those of Camilla’s other pets, including Bluebell, the plucky rescue dog who once had more bald patches than Westminster Abbey’s choirboys, and the dearly departed Beth.

King Charles’ own dog, Snuff, also made the list – although insiders claim he’s mostly in it for the biscuits and political neutrality.

In a touching nod to dogs across Britain, the garden will also feature the names of pooches belonging to RHS ambassadors and Radio 2 presenters, and even Monty Don’s late Labrador, Ned.

Camilla, who serves as royal patron of Battersea, has long championed rescue animals. In a previous interview, she recalled the day she met Beth at the shelter: “She had just been moved from pillar to post and dumped,” said the Queen, adopting the pup faster than you can say “kneel before the biscuit tin”.

Bluebell followed shortly after – a scrappy woodland wanderer found “covered in sores and no hair”. Now fully fluffed and likely ruling the couch cushions, she’s the royal household’s comeback queen.

As for Moley, details of his hobbies include muddy puddles, shredding the pages of Horse & Hound, and – rumour has it – trying to chew the corner of a priceless Queen Victoria footstool. Royal insiders say he’s “spirited”, which is palace code for mayhem on legs.

Still, Queen Camilla seems utterly besotted. And who can blame her? In a world of diplomatic dilemmas and ceremonial obligations, sometimes all you need is a wagging tail, a warm lap and a dog who thinks your tiara might be a chew toy.

Long may he dig!

Image: Instagram

200 unexploded WWII bombs found underneath playground

Almost 200 unexploded bombs dating back to World War II have been unearthed from beneath a children's playground in the north of England.

The discovery was made in Scotts Play Park in Wooler, Northumberland, with 176 bombs recovered and fears that more could be discovered.

The first of the devices, which still contain a charge, were found in January and was followed by much larger finds in the following weeks.

It is believed the area was used as a Home Guard training ground during the war, and the explosives were buried at the end of Second World War in 1945.

After two bombs were recovered by the British Army, the local parish council was then advised that a full survey of the area was required.

“I never thought as a parish councillor I’d be dealing with bomb disposal,” Conservative councillor Mark Mather said, as reported by the BBC.

“It’s quite something to think the children have been playing on bombs and it’s been a really challenging situation.

“We’ve only cleared about a third of all the park and we could still find another pit with more bombs in.”

The bombs were first discovered in January after the parish council received a grant to build a fully inclusive playground to be added to the existing area.

While digging foundations at the site on January 14th, the first bomb was found, with another 150 explosives being found in the following two days.

Experts from the local Barracks confirmed the first device was a training bomb and the UK’s Ministry of Defence said a full site survey was needed.

“They are called practice bombs so they’re not live,” Mather said.

“But they do still carry a charge and were found with the fuse and contents intact so they could be hazardous."

“The story we’re getting from locals is that Wooler was a centre for Home Guard training and officers came here from all over the country. After the war it looked like they just buried all the ordnance in one of the pits.”

Queen guitarist Brian May recovering from health scare

Sir Brian May's wife, Anita Dobson, has given an update on his health, following his minor stroke last September.

The Queen guitarist, revealed that he had lost control over his arm after the minor stroke, with his wife saying that the health scare had reminded her that "life is precious".

“Brian is stable now”, she told The Sun newspaper.

“The start of the year has been up and down. We both had the flu but we took the kids to Lapland, 15 of them," the actress, who has been married to the musician for almost 25 years, added.

She also said that he had "never been happier" since they had moved from London to the countryside.

“To see what it has done to Brian... he loves it. He loves the birds and the animals”, she said.

“He feeds all the birds and the badgers, foxes and pheasants. It’s like running a pub for animals.”

In another social media post, Sir Brian had previously said the health scare had been “a little scary” but praised the “fantastic care” he received from Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey.

At the time he was "grounded" after being advised not to drive, fly or do any activity which would send his heart rate too high.

Sir Brian and his family have since been “spending time at home” and “taking each day as it comes”.

“It makes you realise that at any minute it could be you. You don’t have to necessarily be old, it could be anyone”, Dobson said.

“You think you are fit; you see these people who run marathons and then at a young age they are gone.

“You have to live every day as if it was your last. It’s not easy to do that.

“You forget and think ‘I’ve got another week’ and it’s all booked up.

"You have to be aware that life is precious, and with life changing so fast we are all on a bit of a thin thread, if you like.”

Image: Maureen McLean/ Shutterstock Editorial

Queen Camilla shares major health update

Queen Camilla has shared details of her health diagnosis, after she was forced to pull out of several key engagements in the last few weeks.

During the Qatari royal visit in London, she revealed that her recent chest infection was actually a form of pneumonia.

The royal had to miss out on the outdoor events of the state visit as she is suffering from post-viral fatigue.

It is understood that her condition was viral, not bacterial, and while she doesn't have pneumonia anymore, doctors have encouraged her to rest and take more time to recover from the fatigue.

A royal source told The Sun, "Some days the Queen is on really good form. It's just one of those things. She has lost the coughing but the lingering side of it is bouts of extreme tiredness.

"There has to be a degree of flex in the Queen's diary at the moment."

The Queen contracted the infection after her and the King’s royal tour of Australia and Samoa in October, and as a result had to pull out of a series of high-profile engagements including Remembrance Day commemorations and the Royal Variety Performance.

She also had to cancel her appearance at the Palace’s reception for Olympic and Paralympic athletes, hosted by her husband, King Charles, and the annual opening of the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey.

There was some concern late last month after the royal abruptly cancelled her planned appearance at the Royal Variety Performance, but she has since returned to her duties in a reduced capacity.

“Following a recent chest infection, the Queen continues to experience some lingering post-viral symptoms, as a result of which doctors have advised that, after a busy week of engagements, Her Majesty should prioritise sufficient rest,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.

Image: Instagram/ The Royal Family

Queen Mary launches new podcast on loneliness

Queen Mary has launched a new podcast focused on helping the most vulnerable in society.

The royal revealed the new venture on Instagram, through her official charity, the Mary Foundation.

The three-episode podcast, called the Lonely Youth series, will focus on those experiencing social isolation giving "insight into the nuances of loneliness by mixing professionalism and personal stories from young people".

The launch of the podcast follows a landmark survey across Denmark that was conducted in 2023 and found 73 per cent of 16-19-year-olds experience loneliness, regardless of whether they are alone or in the company of others.

It also found that 17 per cent of 16-24-year-olds feel very lonely.

The proportion of people in Denmark who experience loneliness has increased dramatically since the first national survey in 2013, which has inspired the Queen of Denmark to take action.

"These are heavy numbers that we must do something about," Queen Mary said.

"Podcasting is not something that we have much experience with yet at the Mary Foundation, but I hope that you will listen and welcome it," she added.

She also said that she was "proud" to be starting the podcast through her own foundation as she is an avid listener of podcasts herself, especially "when I have to go from one place to another".

"Some days I'm in the mood for entertainment, and other days I use it to gain knowledge and new input," she said.

The release date of the podcast has yet to be revealed and it is unclear whether the royal herself will speak across the episodes.

The podcast will be shared via the Mary Foundation website and other podcast platforms.

Queen Mary's foundation focuses on three core areas: bullying and wellbeing, loneliness and domestic violence, and was launched in 2007.

Images: The Danish Royal Household/Mary Foundation

Queen Camilla "heartbroken" by death of rescue dog

Queen Camilla, who is recovering from a chest infection, has had to make the tough decision of putting her beloved pet dog, Beth, down after she was diagnosed with an untreatable tumour.

The news was revealed by Buckingham Palace in a message shared to social media, which read: "A sad farewell to Beth, the Queen's much-loved companion from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home who brought such joy, whether on walkies, helping on official duties, or curled up by the fire".

The 77-year-old royal is said to be "heartbroken" by the loss over the weekend.

Beth was rescued by Camilla in 2011, and because she was a rescue, the animal charity was never sure of Beth's age.

The royal later adopted another Jack Russell, Bluebell, soon after getting Beth, when she became patron of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in 2017, taking over from the late Queen Elizabeth II.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Royal Family (@theroyalfamily)

Recalling the moment she found Bluebell, the Queen previously told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Along I went to Battersea, and Beth appeared, and she had just been moved from pillar to post and dumped.

"We thought it would be nice for her to have a friend. Queen Elizabeth's final diary entry revealed

The final dairy entry of Queen Elizabeth, written in the days before her death, has been revealed for the first time.

Featuring in Robert Hardman’s biography on King Charles, Charles III: New King, New Court, the final entry in Her Majesty's personal diary delves into the last days of her life.

During her 70-year reign, Queen Elizabeth kept a private diary to record key events: a tradition she upheld until her final days.

The passage, which was penned on September 6th, was made at Balmoral just two days before she died at age 96.

She wrote that her private secretary, Edward Young, had visited her, and shared some highlights about swearing in new Privy Council members.

“It transpires that she was still writing it at Balmoral two days before her death,” Hardman wrote.

“Her last entry was as factual and practical as ever. It could have been describing another normal working day starting in the usual way — ‘Edward came to see me’ — as she noted the arrangements which her private secretary, Sir Edward Young, had made for the swearing-in of the new ministers of the Truss administration.”

The Queen’s final engagement was asking Liz Truss to form a government after the resignation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

According to The Telegraph UK, Queen Elizabeth's diary-writing habit is one she passed on to King Charles, with a senior courtier revealing that Charles “doesn’t write great narrative diaries like she used to,” but he does “scribble down his recollections and reflections”.

Dame Maggie Smith has been farewelled in a "poignant but not sad" funeral service.

The intimate service was attended by Smith's closest friends, family and colleagues, as mourners gathered at the Mortlake Crematorium in London to celebrate her life.

According to one attendee, guests paid tribute to the late actress with "brilliant eulogies" and by "belting out hymns", with the service described as "beautiful, warm, and full of laughter".

"Such a beautiful goodbye to Maggie Smith today," the guest said. "It was warm and funny and full of love and brilliant eulogies, with the best hymns bringing belted out by all. It was poignant but not sad because hers was a life so richly lived."

"I knew her because of [the guest's husband's] decades of working with her but I adored her."

"[The guest's daughter] was traumatised when she first met her as she knew her as the terrifying housekeeper Mrs Medlock in The Secret Garden! Maggie was as funny and sharp as it gets. One of the greats."

The news of Dame Maggie Smith's death was confirmed by her family, who announced she has died on September 27th at the age of 89.

Smith's sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens wrote in a statement, “She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27 September."

“An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. "Disgraceful": Government red tape causes funeral to be cancelled

A local council has cancelled a funeral just 24 hours before it was set to take place due to government red tape.

Ever since Shellharbour local Judy passed away, her brother Ron had been working hard to give her a decent send off.

However, less than one day before her planned funeral, the Shellharbour Council cancelled the service over an unpaid burial fee.

Ron had been liaising with two government agencies to get payment to council for the burial, which A Current Affair said was a matter of one government organisation waiting for a simple sign off from another government agency.

Confirmation of the payment came through just one day after the funeral should have gone ahead.

Ron was left heartbroken over the cancellation and said the council was "very disrespectful" in their dealings, and said he is owed an apology.

"Disgraceful in fact. Low-life mongrels to do that to any family in this sort of situation," Ron told ACA.

He says the most devastating part was calling family one by one, including Judy's intellectually disabled son, to deliver the news, as he recalled, "He was in tears. I had to get his support worker over just to calm him down."

Shellharbour City Council told A Current Affair via email it was "unable to grant interment rights which are legally required before a burial because the fee hadn't been paid".

They went on to say in a statement, "Shellharbour City Council acknowledges the complexity of the burial process and apologises for the hurt the family has experienced."

King and Queen of Spain attacked during royal visit

The king and queen of Spain have been attacked by furious locals during a tour of the flood-ravaged area of Valencia.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia were met by an angry mob who have been dealing with the fallout of deadly flooding that has killed 217 people, with another 1,900 missing.

Accompanied by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, the royal couple arrived in Paiporta on Sunday, when a crowd of hundreds descended.

The crowd began to throw mud, rocks, sticks and rubbish at the group while screaming “murderer” and “shame”, with much of the vitriol seeming to be directed as the Spanish leader.

The royals were struck with some of the debris, with vision showing the couple’s faces and clothing dirtied with mud.

“It’s been four days, where have you been?” one onlooker yelled at the king. “You’ve just come here to pose for pictures. You have no shame.”

Another screamed at a visibly frightened Queen Letizia, “You lack for nothing while we here don’t even have water to drink.”

According to reports, security tried to whisk the royals away to safety but King Felipe insisted they stay and continue speaking with those who wanted to, with the couple later seen consoling survivors, with one man crying on the king’s shoulder.

As they eventually got into their car to leave, a policeman shouted “long live the king”, which was met with howls of “guillotine” by some of the protesters.

In a statement issued by the palace hours after the melee, it was announced a second visit by the king to nearby Chiva, another flood-affected town, had been called off.

Juan Bordera, a local politician in Valencia, told the BBC that the king and queen’s tour was a “very bad decision”.

“It’s logical that the people are angry, it’s logical that the people didn’t understand why this visit is so urgent,” Mr Bordera told the BBC.

New details about Queen Elizabeth's final hours revealed

The final hours of Queen Elizabeth's life have been shared in a tell-all new book about the royals, detailing how Her Majesty was forced to pull out of an important meeting before she died.

In his book, Charles III: New King, New Court, author Robert Hardman shared that the day before her death, Queen Elizabeth had met the departing British prime minister, Boris Johnson, and his replacement, Liz Truss, at Balmoral and attended a drinks party that same evening.

Hardman wrote that the Queen felt "buzzy" at the event, but her health quickly took a turn for the worst.

“She was quite buzzy over pre-dinner drinks,” one guest at the party told Hardman.

“But then she said she was going upstairs to have dinner alone.”

The monarch then spent the next day in bed, but reportedly arranged with the Privy Council to dial in via video link for an important meeting.

As her health deteriorated throughout the day, that was changed to allow for her to call from her bedroom in an audio-only capacity, according to Hardman.

But just moments before the meeting was set to get underway, the Queen reportedly made the difficult decision to cancel entirely on “medical advice”.

It was that evening that then-Prince Charles was advised by Princess Anne and his private secretary to make his way urgently to his mother’s bedside, with fears that the end was near.

Hardman writes that the following day, Charles was told his mother had died over the phone, having briefly left her bedside to have a moment to himself outside.

Sadly, most of the royal family didn't make it to Balmoral in time to see the Queen before she passed, with Prince William, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward and his wife Sophie all landing 40 minutes later.

Prince Harry shared in his own memoir Spare that he learned of his grandmother’s death by reading it in a BBC breaking news alert, moments after his own flight landed.

The Queen died at 3:10pm on September 8th 2022, after more than 70 years on the throne.
