Why Sam Newman could be banned from the MCG

Sam Newman could face a two-year ban from the MCG over this one simple act.

The former AFL player, who has been a member of the Melbourne Cricket Club for more than 50 years, could be banned from next year's Grand Final after he revealed that he had "transferred a ticket" to his son's friend earlier this week.

“My son said ‘have you got any tickets?’ I said ‘No, but I get a ticket from the MCG because I am a member’,” he explained on his You Cannot Be Serious podcast.

“I said ‘why don’t you get one from the MCG’?

“So he applied and got one and he had a friend in Perth who he gave the ticket to.

“Then he called me on the day and said his friend couldn’t get in because ‘they said he was trying to impersonate you’ (Newman) and ‘that the other bit of bad news is you have been suspended from going to next year’s grand final because you have tried to sneak someone in on your ticket’.

“I had no intention of trying to sneak anyone in. I just thought if I get issued a ticket I can give it to someone," he continued.

Despite the suspension, the former footy star said he "couldn't care less" about the potential suspension.

“Ignorance is bliss. I don’t care if they ban me from every Grand Final because while they go on with that pompous, arrogant, nonsense beforehand (the Welcome to Country), I just won’t go.”

In a statement shared to the Herald Sun, the MCC noted that all members were advised of the restrictions around tickets for the Brisbane Lions vs Sydney Swans grand final ahead of the game.

“The Melbourne Cricket Club does not make comment in relation to disciplinary matters and all members must adhere to the Club’s Code of Conduct,” a spokesperson said.

“Eligible members of the Melbourne Cricket Club were able to access the 2024 AFL Grand Final subject to membership restrictions which were communicated to members in advance of the event.”

Newman will wait to see whether he will receive any punishment, which would range from a membership suspension or restrictions between six months and two years.

Images: X

Katy Perry's massive AFL payday revealed

Katy Perry is reportedly set to take home a huge sum for her AFL grand final performance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday.

The AFL secured the Wide Awake singer as their headline pre-game entertainment act in July.

Since then, there have been rumours of disagreements between Katy's team and organisers on the set list, but the pop star is still set to be paid $1 million for each song she performs.

According to The Herald Sun, Katy will be paid $5 million for the event, as she will perform five songs on the night. She is also set to share the stage briefly with an Aussie female pop star, that is yet to be named, but is someone she "looks up to".

During an appearance on Channel 10's The Project, Katy hinted that the mystery guest is a Scorpio, which could point to Delta Goodrem or Tina Arena.

“She’s a Scorpio, that’s another hint for your digging,” she said when probed by The Project host Sarah Harris.

Perry reportedly only recently settled the drama about which five songs she'll be performing according to footy journalist Tom Morris.

Morris told SEN Breakfast on Monday that the AFL requested that she performed her popular hits from her older albums, but Katy's team was reported to have pushed back, as they wanted to perform two new songs from her comeback album 143.

They eventually reached an agreement for Katy to perform just one new song.

Image: The Project

Another Channel 7 star quits in AFL shake-up

Just last month Kane Cornes confirmed his move from the Nine Network to Channel 7 for the 2025 season, with colleague and veteran journalist Caroline Wilson doing the same.

Now it has emerged that Channel 7 and Triple M commentator Luke Darcy has reportedly decided to walk away from the media industry all together, in the latest AFL shake-up.

Darcy, a former ruckman who played 226 games with the Western Bulldogs, joined the media industry in 2007. He was initially with Network Ten before he moved to Channel 7 in 2011 and has since filled a variety of hosting and commentary roles.

He also had a long-running breakfast show on Triple M with Eddie McGuire before that ended in 2020.

Darcy got attention for his interview during the 2013 Essendon peptide saga and his repetition of the phrase, “say that again”.

Now, he is choosing to walk away from the media to focus on his family's varied business ventures, according to the Herald Sun.

A few of their business interests include a wellness spa in Bali, pubs and venues in Victoria, as well as a podcast on leadership.

The news comes following a series of controversies involving Darcy, who on April this year, confronted Cornes during a live Triple M radio segment, labelling the former Port Adelaide midfielder “more mean spirited and nasty to people than anyone in the history of our industry”.

The two have since cleared the air, to some extent, with Cornes saying that just last week he had crossed paths with Darcy during a footy game, and Darcy happily passed him some milk for a cup of tea.

Wilson was among those that defended Cornes and called Darcy out for being out of line.

It is unclear whether the controversy had any impact on Darcy's decision to leave the industry.

A few footy fans were having a field day with the news, with one writing on Reddit: “Thank f**k. Insufferable that guy."

“Nice bloke probably. But he’s the only actual voice I can’t stand listening to,” added another.

“To give some credit he does sound genuinely excited/passionate for the game in much of his commentary," one defended.

Image: news.com.au

AFL fans demand apology over "heartless" joke at Brownlow awards

AFL fans are demanding an apology over a "heartless" joke at the Brownlow medal awards on Monday night.

During the three-hour ceremony, host Rebecca Madden struck up a conversation with Collingwood forward Jamie Elliott after he had missed out on winning AFL Mark of the Year to teammate Bobby Hill, and the $50,000 that comes with it.

While receiving the award on stage Hill joked that he would use the winnings to fly him and Elliott to Vegas the next morning to celebrate.

Maddern spoke with Elliott in some lighthearted banter before ending their short chat by saying, “Jamie, thank you. It was a lovely chat. Have a lovely time in Vegas. I wish you all the best. And come home alive.”

Elliot didn't react to the comment, while social media lit up with angry commentary about Maddern's "joke".

Former Magpies and Power player John McCarthy died aged 22 on an end-of-season trip to Vegas in 2012, falling from a rooftop at the Flamingo Hotel on the Strip.

It was a death that rocked the AFL to its core and is still remembered by both clubs each season.

While many people were quick to point out that Maddern was just making a fleeting comment about the debaucherous city, others demanded an apology from Channel Seven.

“Rebecca Maddern needs to apologise to John McCarthy’s family and Jamie Elliott for her insensitive comments about coming back from Vegas alive,” one wrote. “The most disgusting and heartless thing I’ve heard a ‘presenter’ say.”

“Did Rebecca Maddern just make a joke about an AFL player to “come back alive” from Vegas on a post season trip? How f**king poor taste. Expecting a full apology before the coverage is over,” added another.

Others jumped to Maddern's defence, with one person writing, “Rebecca Maddern’s come back alive from Vegas joke is just standard banter from where I sit. People are wanting to see things that clearly weren’t intended, and trying to instigate controversy.”

“She’s obviously not aware of JMac and the circumstances surrounding his death. It was still not a funny thing to say. I think she’ll be feeling awful.”

Later in the evening, Carlton captain Patrick Cripps made history by taking home his second Brownlow medal with a record-breaking 45 votes.

"The issue is, he's alive": AFL mistakenly commemorates Hawthorn great

The AFL has found itself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons after prematurely mourning a former player’s death at this week’s Hall of Fame ceremony.

The ceremony, held on Tuesday night, saw Collingwood great Dane Swan inducted into the Hall of Fame and Hawthorn’s Jason Dunstall elevated to Legend status. But amidst the celebrations and the teary-eyed tributes, the AFL managed to pull off a major faux pas during the "In Memoriam" segment, which is of course supposed to honour those in the game who have passed away within the last year.

Hawthorn's John Kennedy Jr was the first to express his shock on Channel 7’s The Front Bar program on Thursday night. "That 71 team, obviously a famous team and important team in Hawthorn’s history," host Sam Pang began, setting the stage for Kennedy’s bombshell. “But I believe, John, you have a cheerio you’d like to give to one of the players.”

Kennedy, not one to miss an opportunity, replied: “I’d like to send one out to Michael Porter who played in the ’71 Grand Final. ‘Portholes’ they called him. He was noted as deceased last night on the AFL Hall of Fame, as one of the deceased people. The issue is he’s alive. So Portholes, if you’re listening mate or you’re up there in NSW, let us know when the wake is because we’ll be all there mate!”

Indeed, the prematurely deceased Porter, who played 78 games for Hawthorn and was part of their 1971 VFL premiership team, took the news of his untimely death with remarkably good humour. Instead of sending a ghostly telegram from the great beyond, he simply called up former Hawks captain David Parkin, who was in the room for the Hall of Fame ceremony in Melbourne, to confirm he was alive and well.

A league spokesman, likely blushing a shade of crimson, said: “Once this innocent mistake was realised we moved quickly to ring and apologise to everyone affected, including Michael, and thank him for his understanding.”

Michael Porter, now thrust back into the limelight in the most unexpected fashion, might just hold the unique distinction of being the only player to attend his own wake and live to tell the tale. We can only hope he’s planning a grandiose party with a guest list featuring all his mates who would’ve otherwise been mourning his "passing".

So, here’s to Michael Porter – alive, well and hopefully laughing his head off at the AFL’s latest gaffe. And for the AFL, perhaps a lesson: next time, double-check the list before sending anyone to the great footy oval in the sky.

Images: Network 7

Geelong great Peter Riccardi has revealed his son, Osca, was briefly put on life support after suffering a mystery infection on the brain.

Speaking on the podcast Beyond The Boundary, the former AFL player revealed that his son became suddenly ill a fortnight ago.

“A couple of Sundays ago (Osca) came home, been out with a few of his mates, he’d been to the beach, went out for dinner, went out to play 10-pin bowling ... and said he was going to bed,” Peter Riccardi said.

“Then halfway through the night he was up, he was vomiting, he was feeling a bit crook ... we just thought he was run down.

“But come lunchtime, he couldn’t talk, he could hardly walk.”

He added that they were extremely lucky his wife Mel worked from home that day and rushed Osca straight to hospital, where they found some "swelling" on his brain following a scan.

Doctors also found that he had a sinus and ear infection and glandular fever all “rolled into one”.

“Whether the swim did something with his ears and went into his brain, I’m not 100 per cent sure, yet,” Riccardi said.

“They put him an induced coma for three days. He was in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) for four days.

“But he’s back home now recovering ... you wouldn’t know that two weeks ago, watching him on life support, and seeing him now, it’s amazing what they do in there.”

The podcast hosts then asked how scary the situation was for Riccardi and his wife, and he responded: “It was, yeah ... obviously they have got to prepare you for the worst (outcome)."

“That was probably the worst thing to hear, because we didn’t know how he was going to come out of it.

“But again, like I said, if Mel had gone to work that day, he wouldn’t be here today.

“We’re pretty lucky, we’re pretty lucky.

“It must have been a mother’s intuition or mother’s instinct to stay at home that day.”

Image: Facebook/ Geelong Cats

Cameron McCarthy's family break silence

Cameron McCarthy's have broken their silence following the former AFL player's shock death at just 29.

The former Fremantle and GWS player died last Thursday after he was found unresponsive by paramedics at a house in Lake Coogee, Perth.

McCarthy's family have shared a heartfelt obituary in The West Australian a week after his death.

“CAMERON ALEX: Our beautiful son and brother, Cameron,” they wrote.

“It is with heavy hearts that we’ve had to say goodbye for now.

“A huge hole now exists in our lives. It will never be the same without you. Through the ups and downs we all rode with you, and you knew that we loved you so much.

“You lit up every room with that gorgeous smile, and we will cherish our memories with you forever.

“Until we meet again. Rest peacefully. Love you always, Dad, Mum, Jessica, Hannah, Drew, Ryan, Poppy.”

Just two days ago, West Coast defender Tom Barrass also shared a heartbreaking tribute to his best mate.

“Last week, this earth lost a beautiful man named Cameron McCarthy,” Barrass wrote.

“A man who wasn’t concerned with money or power, instead creativity and experience. A man who approached all things with energy and excitement, as if viewing them for the first time.

“A man whose presence will be sorely missed, but whose outlook and opinion can be heard any time we wish to listen. Enjoy the journey and lean in. Trust your intuition and have conviction, as that’s all you’ve really got in the end.

“Men like these are hard to come by; so full of love, kindness and laughter. But that’s why they’re so special, and the lessons they teach last a lifetime.

“I’m gonna miss you Universal Brother. Say Gday to the big fella for me and put in a good word please. Rest in Peace," he concluded his post, with AFL players sending their love and condolences in the comment section.

Images: Instagram

"It loses its value": Calls for the Last Post to be canned from Anzac Day footy

A radio host has called for the Last Post to be canned from the majority of Anzac Day football games, saying it has lost its meaning over the years, leaving people with "bugle fatigue".

An Anzac Day AFL match has taken place every year at the MCG on Anzac Day since 1995, with Collingwood and Essendon going head to head year after year.

It was the brainchild of then Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy who had also served in the Australian Army during his playing days for Richmond.

The game started as a one off-match, which quickly snowballed into an entire round of games, while the NRL also joined in and created their own Anzac Day matches.

Traditionally, each game starts with a ceremony of recognition of our veterans and a performance of the Last Post. before the game kicks off.

The addition of the several extra games, all which begin with the Last Post, prompted radio host Greg 'Marto' Martin from Brisbane's Triple M Breakfast with Marto, Margaux & Dan to call for The Last Post to be scrapped from all matches, except the annual fixture between Essendon and Collingwood.

"Football has now turned [The Last Post] into a gimmick," he said.

"Back in 1995 when Kevin Sheedy, the coach of Essendon, he said, 'Let's have an Anzac Day clash at the MCG,' I reckon it's the most… spine tingling three minutes or so."

"97,000 at the MCG… not one person yelling out while that's being played and, the honour that they give to all serving soldiers and returned soldiers is quite extraordinary."

"But now what's happened, as football always does, and I'm not just talking AFL I'm talking rugby league as well, they've taken a wonderful thing and they've gone, 'Oh that's good —'"

Margaux interrupted saying: "How can we capitalise!"

Marto continued, "So what's going to happen this week in all eight games of the AFL and all eight games of the rugby league… every single one of them will play this [The Last Post] and you'll get ANZAC - you'll get bugle fatigue."

"We have to stop it somewhere."

Margaux said, "It gets saturated, so it loses its value. They all think they are doing the right thing, but all they are doing is turning it into a mockery."

The AFL has confirmed that all nine matches across round seven will hold special Anzac observance ceremonies ahead of each game, with AFL General Manager Commercial Peta Webster saying, "Anzac Day is one of our country's most important national occasions so I'd encourage all fans attending matches throughout the round to arrive early to soak up the atmosphere and pre-match formalities that will no doubt be another moving tribute to the sacrifices of our past and present service men and women."

Kochie called out over "disgusting" remarks

Port Adelaide president David Koch has come under fire over remarks he made while discussing Jeremy Finlayson's homophobic slur towards another player.

Finlayson is under AFL investigation after he admitted to aiming a homophobic slur at an Essendon player on Friday’s game at Adelaide Oval.

The player Finlayson directed the comment towards is not yet known, but on Saturday night, Port Adelaide confirmed that a “contrite Finlayson made the club aware during the three-quarter time break” of the incident “and apologised to the victim on the field after the final siren last night”.

On Sunday morning, Koch appeared on ABC’s Offsiders to discuss the incident with host Kelli Underwood, veteran journalist Caroline Wilson and AFL footy boss Laura Kane.

“There’s no excuse for it. Jeremy was incredibly remorseful, actually told the coaches at three-quarter time that it was inexcusable, went and apologised to the player after the game,” Koch said.

“That’s no excuse whatsoever. It’s in the heat of the battle, should not have done it and we’ll wait for the AFL to go through its process.”

When discussing what sort of punishment the league could hand down to Finlayson, footy boss Kane questioned whether it may be similar to Taylor Walker's six-week ban after he used a racial slur.

But Kochie wasn't on board with linking the two incidents, and said that the the league had set a precedent with the ruling it handed down to North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson.

“Not ruling it out (an internal investigation), but, umm, you know, if you look at comparisons and benchmarks that have been set,” Koch said.

“With a 55-year-old coach premeditated, target the player, walk up to them is very different to a player in the heat of battle when there was a lot of niggle in the game, the pressure again - absolutely no excuse, not condoning it whatever, and should not be part of the game, but if you’re going to look at a comparison, that would be the benchmark there.”

ABC’s Offsiders host Underwood pressed further and asked him: “If I put it to you, it’s in the same category as Taylor Walker’s racial slur, what would your response to that be?”

Koch responded: “I don’t think that’s realistic. I think the benchmark has been set in terms of...”

Wilson interjected: “With Alistair Clarkson which I thought was too light."

But Koch insisted: “OK. But the benchmark has been set.”

The comments from the former Sunrise presenter was slammed on social media.

“This is pretty disgusting from Koch," wrote Columnist Greg Jericho.

“Yeah nah @kochie_online. A slur is a slur is a slur. You say you don’t condone a player using a homophobic slur on the field and that there’s no excuse but in the same sentence practically excuse it by saying it occurred ‘in the heat of battle’ and a ‘niggle’. So disappointing," another user wrote.

“Terrible take from Koch. We are benchmarking abuse now. Not making excuses but … homophobia and racism have no place in the game," a third added.

“@kochie_online as a leader of our football club this statement is beyond disappointing. A slur against a marginalised group is exactly the same the nature of it is irrelevant. You need to do better!” a fourth commented.

Images: Getty/ ABC

We would have been screwed without (our wedding planner).”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Abbey Holmes (@abbeycholmes)

Their wedding was nothing short of glam with Channel 7 AFL commentators Luke Hodge and Brian Taylor, and Magpies star Mason Cox among the 100-person guest list.

Celebrity friends and fans took to the comments to congratulate the newlyweds.

“Absolutely stunning!!!
