Never-before-seen footage shows moments after JFK assassination

Never-before-seen footage of aftermath of United States President John F. Kennedy's assassination has emerged, more than six decades after his murder.

The film footage will soon be sold through RR action, and shows the moment JFK's motorcade sped toward Parkland Hospital as Clint Hill, Jackie Kennedy’s Secret Service agent, shields both her and the president.

"This is remarkable, in colour, and you can feel the 80mph (130km/h)," said Bobby Livingston, executive vice president of the auction house.

The 8mm home film was captured by Dale Carpenter Sr. and began with him filming other vehicles in the motorcade as it travelled down Lemmon Avenue toward the city centre.

The film then picks up after Kennedy was shot, and shows Clint Hill - who famously jumped onto the back of the limousine as the shots were fired - hovering in a standing position over the president and first lady.

"I did not know that there were not any more shots coming," Agent Hill, who is now 92-years-old, said.

"I had a vision that, yes, there probably were going to be more shots when I got up there as I did."

In an interview with People magazine, he said that the discovery of the film is “an emotional thing for me because I know what has happened. I know what I’m seeing in that film is a dead president.”

The assassination itself was famously captured on film by Abraham Zapruder, and according to Livingston, the executive vice president of the auction house, the footage captured by Carpenter is "unlike any other footage known to exist".

"This film captures a segment immediately following the Zapruder film, providing a fresh perspective on one of the most analyzed moments in history," he continued.

"Once you see it, you'll never forget Clint Hill's heroic efforts to protect Mrs. Kennedy, racing at 80 miles an hour in a desperate attempt to save the president's life as they sped to Parkland."

Carpenter's grandson, James Gate, said that his family had always known about the footage, but they rarely talked about the footage which was stored along with other family films in a milk crate.

It wasn't until after his grandfather's death from Parkinson's disease when his mother decided to hand down family mementos and the film landed in Gate's possession.

While he was initially underwhelmed by the film when he watched the footage, it was when he saw the aftermath of the assassination that he was "shocked".

In 2012, Gates got in touch with Agent Hill and his wife Lisa McCubbin Hill, to show them the footage.

Agent Hill's wife said that while knew about the events that unfolded on the tragic day, "to see the footage of it actually happen ... just kind of makes your heart stop."

“When you see the president’s limousine, you see Clint on the back of the car. To see the speed of the car and how precarious that was — Clint is still trying to protect the president and Mrs. Kennedy from whatever else might be coming.

"One slip and he would have gone flying off and he would have been killed,” she told People magazine.

Stephen Fagin, curator at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which tells the story of the assassination on November 22, 1963, said: "These images, these films and photographs, a lot of times they are still out there. They are still being discovered or rediscovered in attics or garages."

The film will be up for auction in northeastern US city of Boston on September 28, with online bidding already underway.

Images: RR Auction / Public Domain

"I can't answer that!": Karl's cheeky question stumps JFK's daughter

Today show host Karl Stefanovic left the US ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy - John F Kennedy's daughter - in fits of laughter after he posed a cheeky personal question on Wednesday morning.

Stefanovic didn't miss the opportunity to play cupid for his daughter by asking the US Ambassador about the relationship status of her youngest son, Jack Schlossberg.

“I hope that you don’t take any offence (to) what I am going to ask. My daughter wanted to know if your son is single?” he said.

This elicited a laugh from the ambassador, who smoothly deflected the question by saying: “You would have to ask him. I can’t answer that.”

Stefanovic laughed and said: “Good deflection.”

The ambassador played along and said: “Your daughter must be so mad at you right now. I would be so mad if I was your daughter.”

The Today show host has two daughters, Ava, 18 and Harper, 3, and continued the joke by saying he was asking on behalf of Harper.

“Then there is something really wrong with you,” the ambassador quipped.

Stefanovic's co-host Sarah Abo joined in on the teasing and said: “Welcome to what the rest of the nation already knows.”

Schlossberg, 30, is the only grandson of former US president John F. Kennedy, and has a considerable social media following with over 100,000 followers on Instagram.

Besides his dashing looks, the 30-year-old also graduated with a law degree from the prestigious Harvard Law School.

Images: Today Show/ News.com.au/ Getty/ Instagram

Warnie stars hospitalised after romantic romp goes painfully wrong

The stars of Channel Nine’s Warnie miniseries have quite the emergency room story to share after filming a sex scene for the show hit them for six.

Alex Williams and Marny Kennedy - the pair embodying the late Shane Warne and his ex-wife Simone Callahan on screen - were filming in Melbourne late in 2022 when the incident occurred.

And while they can see the funny side of it all now, at the time it was a far more embarrassing - and injury-stricken - affair.

As Kennedy told The Daily Telegraph, the two had been filming “a little makeout scene” - set back when Shane and Simone were in their younger years - when things took a turn.

She detailed how they had been going down a corridor, and “were meant to push into the bedroom and land on the bed”. But, unfortunately for the pair, they didn’t heed the Warne-ing, and instead they “both completely missed the bed.

“Alex cracked the back of his head open and I broke my right wrist.”

Kennedy shared that they “ended up sitting in the emergency room together”, and that his head was wrapped in a bandage, while her wrist was strapped.

To add to their situation, Kennedy said, “it was not like a normal hospital either, it was more of a place for the elderly, so it was just Alex and I with our bleached hair, fully still in wardrobe, sitting there surrounded by elderly residents.”

Despite their injuries, and any lingering embarrassment, the co-stars - who had also been friends for a decade at that point - returned to set the very next day to get on with the job.

Kennedy didn’t reveal whether or not anyone had taken the opportunity to adorn her cast with a Golden Duck, but that there had been some banter on set in the wake of their accident, with the actress revealing that “we took a photo of ourselves in the emergency room and then printed it onto mugs and that was our wrap [end of filming] gift to a lot of the crew."

It is believed that the two-part series will go to air later in June, regardless of the public outcry when the trailer first dropped during the 2023 State of Origin series.

Images: Screentime

Betrayed wife found not guilty of intentionally hitting husband and mistress with car

A jury has been unable to decide whether or not Christie Kennedy, 37, ran down her husband and alleged mistress, after discovering he was having an affair.

The Brisbane-based woman faced District Court recently where she pleaded not guilty to two counts of malicious acts with intent to disable, denying deliberately hitting David Larkin and Zowie Noring with her BMW SUV in March, 2021.

The prosecution had also presented the option of two lesser alternative charges of assault which include occasioning bodily harm while armed, but Ms Kennedy pleaded not guilty to those offences as well.

Allegedly at the time of the incident, Kennedy got out of her car, grabbed Noring by the hair and repeatedly punched her while screaming obscenities, the District Court heard.

Kennedy said she did not intend to hit the pair with her car and had been in shock, not realising what was going on. On Monday afternoon she was found not guilty with a majority verdict by the jury on two counts of malicious acts with intent to disable.

However, the jury could not reach a unanimous or majority verdict for the alternative charges of two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed.

She had pleaded guilty to unlawful assault, however the jury has been discharged and the matter is listed for mention on September 15.

Image: Nine

See inside Jackie O’s gorgeous vineyard home that's selling for $65 million

Jackie Kennedy’s stunning Martha Vineyard estate has been listed for an eye watering $65 million.

Jackie purchased the expansive 340-acre oceanfront property, known as Red Gate Farm, in 1979.

The main residence alone is a whopping 5,456-square foot property and boasts five en-suite bedrooms, two “powder” rooms as well as a chef’s kitchen.

The home also included a chef’s kitchen and the property also has a two-story guest home with four bedrooms and three bathrooms.

The property has been listed by the celebrity’s oldest daughter, Caroline Kennedy who said: “Forty years ago, my mother fell in love with Martha’s Vineyard.”

"When she found Red Gate Farm, it was a perfect expression of her romantic and adventurous spirit. The dunes and ponds and rolling hills of Aquinnah gave her the chance to create a world where she could be so close to nature, close to her family and friends, and, most importantly, close to her beloved books. She even built a fairy treehouse for her grandchildren.

“Those grandchildren are grown so now it is time for us to follow my mother’s example and create our own worlds. We hope that a new family will treasure this place as we have for three generations.”

The breathtaking property was designed by Hugh Newell Jacobsen and was renovated in 2000 by Deborah Bere, Dean of the Yale School of Architecture,

Situated on the edge of Squibnocket Pond, the estate has over a mile of the Atlantic beachfront as a glorious view.

Scroll through the gallery above to see Jackie Kennedy’s gorgeous home.

Ted Kennedy car crash scandal that killed Mary Jo Kopechne: Letter exposes new claims

After 50 years, the Ted Kennedy Chappaquiddick incident has remained one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the Kennedy family.

The car crash on the US island ended the life of 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne and derailed Ted Kennedy’s presidential chances.

On the evening of July 18, 1969, the then US senator Kennedy hosted a party on the small island for the Boiler Room Girls, a group of six women who had worked on his brother Robert F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign the year before. One of the women was 28-year-old Kopechne.

Despite extensive reports on the incident, details of the events of the night have remained shrouded. Kennedy reportedly left the party with Kopechne, even though she did not bring her purse or hotel room key with her. The two drove off in his 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88.

Kennedy said the car went over the bridge into Poucha Pond after he made a wrong turn. While he managed to escape the sinking vehicle, Kopechne remained trapped and was later found dead in the morning.

But a letter to Kopechne’s surviving family has challenged this story.

The letter, recently revealed by PEOPLE’s Cover-Up podcast, came from a man who claimed to have met a woman who had attended the party the night Kopechne died.

The woman, referred to as “Betty”, said Kopechne had had too much to drink at the event. Betty then brought Kopechne to Kennedy’s car to rest, and then went back to the cottage.

The letter claimed that Kennedy and another female guest went for a drive in the car. When the sedan plunged into the water, Kennedy and the passenger survived and returned to the party, unaware that Kopechne had been in the vehicle all along.

Betty shared the story, and the letter said that was when “…the Kennedy damage control machine kicked in and informed the shocked senator.”

After receiving the letter in 2018, Kopechne’s cousin Georgetta Potoski said the full story might not yet be revealed.

“I’m not convinced the mystery has been solved,” she told PEOPLE.

“I know there are things that we do not know about what happened that night. The truth, even if it’s not what you want to hear, at least has some dignity around it.

“I don’t think there will ever be justice for the loss of her life. [But] I think the truth would make our hearts rest easier.”

A week after the incident, Kennedy pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of the accident and was given a two-month suspended sentence. Later on the same day, he gave a national broadcast statement in which he said, “I regard as indefensible the fact that I did not report the accident to the police immediately.”

Kennedy, who was preparing for his presidential run, delayed his campaign until 1980. His run for the country’s top office was unsuccessful, but he continued to be re-elected as senator seven more times until his death in 2009.

In his posthumously published memoir True Compass, Kennedy described the incident as “a horrible tragedy that haunts me every day of my life”.

Trump claims wife Melania is the new “Jackie O”

5 minutes with author Robyn Cadwallader

In 5 minutes with author, Over 60 asks book writers about their literary habits and preferences. Next in this series is Robyn Cadwallader, editor and writer based outside of Canberra. Her 2015 debut novel, The Anchoress won the ACT Book of the Year People’s Choice Award and a Canberra Critics’ Circle Award for fiction. Her second book, Book of Colours was released in April 2018. In addition to these two titles, Cadwallader has also written poetry, reviews, and non-fiction book Three Readings of the Thirteenth-Century Seinte Marherete. Over 60 spoke with Cadwallader about writing routine, soothing poetry, and the task of juggling between different projects.

Over 60: What is your best writing tip?

Robyn Cadwallader: Back yourself. While it’s vital to read and be ready to learn from others, remember that only you can write with your voice and vision; don’t weaken it by trying to be someone else. That’s a certain way for doubt to creep in. Trust yourself, put down your words in your way.

What book(s) are you reading right now?

I’m reading Nigel Featherstone’s Bodies of Men, a beautiful love story set in World War II and I’m about to begin reading Melissa Lucashenko’s Too Much Lip. I’m also reading lots of books for my research about thirteenth-century England for the next novel.

What is your favourite literary quote?

Don’t just write what you know; write what you don’t know about what you know.

What book do you think more people should read?

I think people would be less anxious and would learn to be kinder to themselves and others and the natural world if they read Mary Oliver’s poetry. It’s easy to read and understand, but so full of gentle wisdom and love for the natural world.

Paperback, e-book or audiobook?

All three! I love the feel of a physical book in my hand. But when I’m travelling, my kindle lets me take with me whatever books I want. And on long car journeys, we always immerse ourselves in audiobooks.

What is your writing routine like?

I don’t plan my stories, so I usually begin the day writing in a kind of diary / notebook about anything and everything because it stops me being scared of the next unknown part of the story. I jot down where I’m at in the story, any questions or worries I have about a character or plot development; sometimes a conversation with myself about how the work is going. That usually loosens me up to start writing. Then it’s about six hours of writing, hopefully.

Which trope grinds your gears?

The neat, everything resolved, happy ever after ending that leaves no room for the reader to take the story further in their own mind.

How many projects do you do at a time?

One major project at a time. Beyond that, I’m also writing blog posts, newsletters and interviews, editing reviews for the online journal, Verity La, and keeping up with social media, so there is some juggling and learning to prioritise.

“The happiest man alive”: Never-before-seen footage of JFK Jr’s secret wedding

Viewers will be able to get a glimpse into the secret wedding of John F Kennedy Jr and Carolyn Bessette later this year thanks to a new special.

The special, which was first announced in 2018, will share footage shot by Kennedy’s friend during his wedding to Bessette in 1996 on Cumberland Island in Georgia.

“On an island off of Georgia we came together on this 18th century plantation. In this dirty, dilapidated, shuttered church next to a pig sty,” a friend says in the preview.

“No air conditioning, very little power on the island. It was the best place for them to host a secret ceremony.”

That same friend then says afterwards: “Nobody would have expected that three years later we’d be at another church for another reason.”

More trailer footage...JFK Jr & Carolyn Bessette: A Camelot Wedding pic.twitter.com/Nl08voKU7f
— Mrs. M ☀️ (@MrsMogul) 14 May 2019

The former first son fell victim to what many call the “Kennedy curse” and faced a tragic death. Speaking to People magazine in 2018, John Jr’s former assistant RoseMarie Terenzino said that the former bachelor was kept on his toes as Carolyn didn’t immediately agree to tie the knot.

“He went into this thing about how everything’s better with a partner, not just fishing but life,” she said.

But despite his determination, Carolyn found the fame that came with being John Jr's partner to be daunting.

“She held off the proposal for about three weeks. I think it made him all the more intent on marrying her,” said Terenzino.

They eventually married one another in a private ceremony, but the happiness was short-lived as three years later, the pair were killed in a plane crash as they travelled to the same island where John Jr first popped the question.

The tragedy occurred on July 16, 1999 as the couple and John Jr’s sister-in-law Lauren were en route to the wedding of his cousin Rory, with John Jr flying the plane.

They never made it.

It was later revealed that extreme weather conditions caused the plane to crash, claiming all three lives.

Their lives were cut short, during a period where the couple were still very much in love.

“To say their relationship was on the rocks is just inaccurate,” said Carole Radziwill, the former wife of John Jr’s cousin Anthony Radziwill.

“They loved each other – Carolyn was quite the loveable person.

“She was clever, she was naughty and she had the balance of being able to be really serious and deep yet funny.”

She went on to say: “I still miss her after all these years.”

There aren’t many celebrities who can reach the level of style icon quite like Jackie Kennedy Onassis can.

The former US first lady, who was in the White House from 1961-1963, was responsible for the fashion trends during the ‘60s with her chic aesthetic and signature style.

Often opting for large sunglasses and Gucci handbags, the wife of JFK became a name in her own right, and now, almost 25 years after her passing, her daughter, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, and granddaughter, Tatiana Schlossberg, have carried on her legacy.

View this post on Instagram

A family affair, as seen on Tatiana Schlossberg, Caroline Kennedy and originally on Jackie in 1972. @giancarlogiammetti

A post shared by Valentino Garavani. Inside Jackie Kennedy’s turbulent relationship with sister Lee Radziwill

Lee Radziwill, who passed away on February 16, left incredible legacies as a socialite, interior designer, public relations executive and style icon, but most remember her as the sister of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Despite her independent achievements, Lee still could not escape comparisons with her older sibling. Following Lee’s death at 85 years old on Friday, the New York Times published an obituary that described her as a woman who "made several attempts for professional recognition, but achieved only pale reflections of the spotlight of her sister".

Their relationship has long been scrutinised, but most observers agreed that the two had a turbulent bond.

"It was never sort of black and white," J. Randy Taraborrelli, biographer and author of Jackie, Janet & Lee, told People.

"There were always shades of grey, and when you try to paint that relationship with a wide brushstroke it never works because there were times when they were very close."

The 'competition' between the sisters began in childhood, when it became apparent to Lee that her parents were more inclined towards their oldest daughter.

In her 2000 book Happy Times, Lee said their father, John Vernou Bouvier III "favoured Jackie … That was very clear to me, but I didn't resent it, because I understood he had reason to … she was not only named after him … but she actually looked almost exactly like him, which was a source of great pride to my father."

Their mother, Janet Norton Lee, showed a similar preference.

"My mother endlessly told me I was too fat, that I wasn't a patch on my sister," Lee told T: The New York Times Magazine in 2013.

"It wasn't much fun growing up with her and her almost irrational social climbing in that huge house of my dull stepfather Hughdie Auchincloss in Washington."

In their early adulthood, Lee beat Jackie to the altar when she married publishing scion Michael Temple Canfield at the age of 20. However, within two months of Lee's marriage, Jackie upstaged her by getting engaged to John F Kennedy, then a senator-to-be from an established and wealthy family.

Taraborrelli said Kennedy’s election to presidency in 1960 marked a new stage in the sibling rivalry.

"Who's going to be more popular? Who's going to be in more magazines? All of that suddenly came to a crashing halt when Jackie became first lady … Lee [said], 'How can I compete with that?' How do you compete with that?"

The sisters' cousin John H Davies wrote in the 1969 book The Bouviers that Jackie’s new connection to the White House exacerbated Lee’s identity crisis as her sister.

"Although she was abundantly gifted herself … she had often been obscured by the shadow of her sister’s prominence, and now that shadow threatened to eclipse her identity," Davies wrote.

Taraborrelli said Lee "had so defined herself as being in competition with Jackie that when finally there was no competition, she didn’t even know who she was. Then that marked a new era for Lee Radziwill. That's when she decided, 'I've got to do something.'"

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Lee made new friends and ventured into new fields on her own, including acting and interior decorating.

However, within weeks of President JFK’s death in 1963, Lee was also the one who stayed as a pillar of support for her grieving sister. According to Jackie’s secret service agent Clint Hill, Lee did "everything she could to support her sister" and “remained with us pretty much during that entire time until Mrs Kennedy and the children moved out of the White House".

"It's just the most ludicrous talk in the world that we’re rivals," Lee told People in 1976. "We're exceptionally close and always have been. We’re together very often. In fact, endlessly."

According to Vanity Fair, when Jackie fell ill with cancer in 1994, Lee rushed to her side. Lee was also present the day before Jackie passed, when she was still in coma.

However, Jackie still left Lee out of her will. She granted her holdings and bequests for her children, family and friends while giving nothing for Lee. Jackie reportedly wrote, "I have made no provision in this, my will, for my sister, Lee B. Radziwill, for whom I have great affection, because I have already done so during my lifetime."

Taraborrelli said of the sisters: "They were rivals, but also confidantes. In a way, they could understand each other in a way no one else could."

JFK's agent speaks out on 55th anniversary of assassination: "I should have been faster"

The secret service agent, who leapt to shield President John F Kennedy after he was shot, has spoken out about the unforgettable turn of events on the 55th anniversary of the assassination.

Agent Clint Hill was the first to react, jumping out of a following car and jumping on the back of the presidential limousine, after former marine Lee Harvey Oswald pulled the trigger at President JFK three times.

However, before Mr Hill could position himself as a human shield, a bullet pierced the President’s head.

In an interview with The Sun on the anniversary of the assassination, now 86-year-old Mr Hill said he will never be able to forget the day that changed history.

“One thing that I’ve never been able to erase from my mind is being on the back of the car looking down at the president, who was lying with his face in Mrs Kennedy’s lap,” Mr Hill said.

“The right side of his face is up and I can see that his eyes are fixed. There’s blood everywhere.

“I can see the gunshot wound. In the room that’s in the skull I can see that there is no more brain matter left,” he said.

“That is something I could never, and have never been able to, erase from my mind.”

Clint Hill

“At the time I never thought ‘I might be killed’ or ‘I won’t see my kids again’,” Mr Hill said.

“I didn’t think of that at all. That was the farthest thing from my mind. My goal was to get there to form a cover for them so no more damage could be done.”

The former secret service agent also discussed the guilt he still feels today for not being fast enough.

“I think I should have been faster,” he said.

“My job was to protect them and I was unable to do that.

“If I had been slightly faster I may have been able to prevent the president’s fatal wound and that has bothered me ever since. It always will - I’m sure.”

Mr Hill also discussed the impact the assassination had on his personal life after suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.

From 1976-1982, Mr Hill cut himself off from everyone in his life except for his wife and two children.

"I self medicated with alcohol during that period of time,” Clint confessed.

“I just didn’t care about anything and I didn’t want to have any contact with anybody.

“Friends would come by and I wouldn’t even acknowledge that they were there. I just ignored everything.”

In 1982, he was slowly able to reclaim his life back.

“I quit drinking, quit tobacco, started to work out a little bit. And I began to gradually get better and better,” he said.

“And finally by 1990 I was able to go back to Dallas and walk the streets of Dealey Plaza up into the Texas School Book Depository and look up at the sixth floor window where Oswald shot from and then come away knowing that I had really done everything I could do that day.”

Mr Hill said the secret service have a much harder job to protect the President today.

“The challenges are much greater to protect the president, whoever it might be,” he said.

“And the fact that President Trump does generate a great deal of animosity from various sections of society, it is something that is very concerning."
