King Charles releases new portrait to mark 76th birthday

King Charles has turned 76!

The royal marked his birthday by opening two food distribution hubs, as part of his Coronation Food Project launched one year ago, with the aim of bridging the gap between food poverty and food waste.

His Majesty visited one of the new hubs in south London on Thursday, which was hosting a "surplus food festival" as part of its opening, where they made meals using food that might otherwise have gone to waste.

He also opened the second Coronation Food Hub in Merseyside in northwest England, in a virtual ceremony.

The monarch spent his birthday touring the new facility before meeting beneficiaries and representatives of food banks, schools and community groups.

Since it was launched, the food project has saved 853 tonnes of surplus food - the equivalent of 2.2 million meals - from going to waste. It has also given £715,000 ($1.4 million) in community food grants to 33 UK organisations.

While the royal had an eventful birthday, the Royal Family's official X account shared portrait of the monarch with the caption: "Wishing His Majesty The King a very Happy Birthday today".

🎂 Wishing His Majesty The King a very Happy Birthday today. pic.twitter.com/Nq7npnaXqa

— The Royal Family (@RoyalFamily) November 14, 2024

The Prince and Princess of Wales also offered their best wishes in a post on social media, with a photo of the monarch taken during his recent overseas tour to Samoa.

"Wishing a very Happy Birthday to His Majesty The King!" they captioned the post.

Wishing a very Happy Birthday to His Majesty The King! pic.twitter.com/blN48K7490

— The Prince and Princess of Wales (@KensingtonRoyal) November 14, 2024

The bells of Westminster Abbey were rung at 1pm (midnight AEDT).

Images: X/ Zak Hussein/ Shutterstock Editorial

Readers response: Have you ever seen or met a member of the royal family during one of their visits?

When the royal family make one of their special, dedicated visits to Australia, some royal fans are lucky enough to catch a glimpse, or even have an interaction with them.

We asked our readers if they have ever seen or met a member of the royal family, and the response was overwhelming. Here's what they said.

Mike Rogerson - I saw the Queen and Prince Phillip on the Princes Highway at Blakehurst, NSW. They were on their way to Wollongong, NSW. We were a group of Blakehurst primary school children on the side of the road in 1954. I was eight at the time.

Lorraine Strand - First saw the Queen when the country school kids travelled by train to Adelaide. Then again in Darwin, when she was visiting houses built after Cyclone Tracy. On a more recent visit by the royals, my husband and I attended the same St Paul’s Anglican Church Service in Canberra as the Queen and Prince Phillip.

Annette Maree - I saw the Queen when she was driven past my house in the 1960’s. She was stunning. I clearly remember her wave, her smile, and her “peaches and cream” complexion. It was one of those flashbulb moments that stays in your mind forever.

Glenda Grange - Yes in 1983 I saw Diana and Charles. They attended a royal command performance in Melbourne. I received a formal gilt edge invitation and was one person away from them. I was invited as a bush fire victim of Ash Wednesday.

Elaine Smith - I haven’t but my mum and grandpa did, in 1954 when she came to our small country town of Red Cliffs, VIC. My grandpa and mum were on a special platform with aged residents of country towns, even got to shake hands with her. I was in the crowd with my girl guide group.

Gary Johnson - 1970 when I was in first year high school we went to Perth airport to see Prince Phillip arrive. I had a school blazer on and Prince Phillip came over and asked what school I was from. If it wasn't for my mum forcing me to wear it, I wouldn't have that great memory.

Janice Yvonne Colman - Not in Australia, but in the UK when they passed by our village on way to a county close by. My brother & I got the royal waves as we stood on the side of the road! We were quite thrilled as we were only 14 & 12 at the time.

Jean Bryant - I saw Princess Margaret back in the 50's when she visited a British Air Force base in Germany.

Ian Hewitt - Yes! At NSW Government house in 1992. It was an honour to us to personally meet their majesties.

King and Queen of Spain attacked during royal visit

The king and queen of Spain have been attacked by furious locals during a tour of the flood-ravaged area of Valencia.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia were met by an angry mob who have been dealing with the fallout of deadly flooding that has killed 217 people, with another 1,900 missing.

Accompanied by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, the royal couple arrived in Paiporta on Sunday, when a crowd of hundreds descended.

The crowd began to throw mud, rocks, sticks and rubbish at the group while screaming “murderer” and “shame”, with much of the vitriol seeming to be directed as the Spanish leader.

The royals were struck with some of the debris, with vision showing the couple’s faces and clothing dirtied with mud.

“It’s been four days, where have you been?” one onlooker yelled at the king. “You’ve just come here to pose for pictures. You have no shame.”

Another screamed at a visibly frightened Queen Letizia, “You lack for nothing while we here don’t even have water to drink.”

According to reports, security tried to whisk the royals away to safety but King Felipe insisted they stay and continue speaking with those who wanted to, with the couple later seen consoling survivors, with one man crying on the king’s shoulder.

As they eventually got into their car to leave, a policeman shouted “long live the king”, which was met with howls of “guillotine” by some of the protesters.

In a statement issued by the palace hours after the melee, it was announced a second visit by the king to nearby Chiva, another flood-affected town, had been called off.

Juan Bordera, a local politician in Valencia, told the BBC that the king and queen’s tour was a “very bad decision”.

“It’s logical that the people are angry, it’s logical that the people didn’t understand why this visit is so urgent,” Mr Bordera told the BBC.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the joyous news, stating, “His Majesty The King has been informed and both families are delighted with the news.”

This exciting chapter comes after Beatrice, 36, and property developer Mapelli Mozzi tied the knot in a charming private ceremony at the Royal Chapel of All Saints, Windsor, in July 2020. Beatrice is also a loving stepmother to Mapelli Mozzi’s son, Christopher Wolf, affectionately known as Wolfie, from a previous relationship.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Royal Family (@theroyalfamily)

With the new baby set to be born as 11th in line to the throne, the little one will join the growing royal family, further enriching their close-knit bond. The child will be the 14th great-grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and the second to arrive since her passing in 2022, following the birth of Beatrice’s sister Princess Eugenie's son, Ernest.

The news is a bright spot in what has been a challenging year for the royal family. Both the Princess of Wales and Beatrice’s mother, Sarah, Duchess of York, have been undergoing treatment for cancer, with the Duchess triumphantly receiving the “all clear” after battling breast cancer and malignant melanoma. Despite these trials, Beatrice's pregnancy brings hope and happiness, with her family embracing the next royal arrival.

The Duchess of York, known as Fergie, expressed her overwhelming joy at the news. “Words cannot express the joy and excitement I feel... Becoming a granny again fills my heart with so much happiness and gratitude. I cannot wait to meet this little one,” she shared. Fergie also celebrated her daughter’s motherhood journey, calling it one of the “greatest privileges” of her life. Twelve-year-old boy falls to his death on cruise

A 12-year-old boy has fallen to his death onboard the Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas, as guests watched on in horror.

The cruise was nearing the end of its itinerary on Sunday and was heading back to Texas after its seven-day cruise around the Western Caribbean when the incident occurred.

Witnesses recalled that the boy was playing with a group of friends he had made on the ship before he tumbled over a 13-storey balcony, falling into the internal Central Park area of the ship, a plaza filled with bars, pubs and restaurants.

Royal Caribbean staff attempted to resuscitate the youngster, but he died before the ship docked in Texas.

The cruise company shared a statement that a death had occurred onboard but refused to share any more information as investigations into the incident began.

Witnesses took to a Facebook page for passengers to share their condolences to the boy's grieving family, and share their version of event.

"My daughter was friends with him and said he was upset today," posted passenger Sara Tullas. "She is so upset. I wish I would have known he was struggling today."

The boy had taken part in the cruise's teen-club, and many passengers said their children had got to know the boy before his death.

"The conversations I have had to have with my son really tripped me up," wrote Shannon Elizabeth on the Facebook page. "My son and him actually got really close on the cruise, and he saw too much of what happened."

"My family and I saw the incident unfold right before us as we were looking down into Central Park from the pool deck," wrote Christa Schoolfield. "We did not see whether he jumped or was playing around."

Another passenger wrote, "I looked over the railing after the emergency alert and wish I didn’t."

"All I ask is to please hug your children tight and tell your family members you love them. Life can change in an instant. Today I was hiding ducks in Central Park and one second later a child's life was gone in front of me."

Friends said the boy was on board with his family, including two sisters, for a birthday celebration.

Simon Dorante-Day calls for "four-way paternity test" to prove royal lineage

Simon Dorante-Day has called for a "four-way paternity test" to prove his royal lineage, while also casting doubt on if Prince William and Prince Harry are actually sons of the monarch.

The Queensland man, who has been claiming to be the secret son of King Charles and Queen Camilla since 2005, has called for an official DNA test to prove his claims in a lengthy Facebook post.

Dorante-Day's post highlights a photo comparison of himself, King Charles and William and Harry as evidence supporting his demand for answers from the royal family.

“This comparison of William, Myself, Charles, and Harry demonstrates something very clearly, there is no consistency. The fact that the left side of my face identically matches Charles whilst neither William nor Harry’s does, raises the obvious question, just who are Charles’s real sons?”

"This is why my wife, Dr. Elvianna, and I believe a 4-way Paternity test is the only way to resolve this issue once and for all. The truth of the game that has been played by the Monarchy, the Government, and the Establishment for 58 years needs to be exposed."

"It's not just what happened to me as a child, and what I remember from growing up in England, but it’s also what’s happened since to myself, my wife, and my children in Australia that supports our argument. These covert and illegitimate activities that are targeted towards us constantly are an attempt to stop us on this journey, nothing more. They will not succeed. They will only strengthen our argument and provides us with evidence to demonstrate what has occurred, in a court room, to judges."

"My question to all of you is how will you truly react when you hear the truth of what has occurred? Would you still want them on the throne?"

Dorante-Day was born in Portsmouth in the UK in 1966, and was adopted at just eight months old. According to his claims, his adoptive mother, who worked for Queen Elizabeth II confessed on her death bed that he was the son of Charles and Camilla.

Prince Harry finally speaks out on "rift" with royal family

Prince Harry has finally opened up on his "rift" with the royal family for the first time, in an interview for the ITV documentary, Tabloids on Trial.

The Duke of Sussex revealed that his decision to launch multiple legal battles against a string of tabloid newspapers was central to his rift with the royal family.

He said that his determination to fight the publications ruined his relationship with them.

“That’s certainly a central piece to it,” he said.

“But, you know, that’s a hard question to answer because anything I say about my family results in a torrent of abuse from the press.

“I’ve made it very clear that this is something that needs to be done. It would be nice if we, you know, did it as a family," he continued.

“I believe that, again, from a service standpoint and when you are in a public role, that these are the things that we should be doing for the greater good.

“But, you know, I’m doing this for my reasons. I think everything that’s played out has shown people what the truth of the matter is.

“For me, the mission continues, but it has, it has, yes. It’s caused, yeah, as you say, part of a rift.”

In December, London's High court ruled that he had been the victim of phone-hacking and other unlawful acts by journalists, with the knowledge of their editors at Mirror Group Newspapers.

Harry said that the publications under MGN had targeted him for 15 years.

He was awarded £140,600 ($267,400), and called the judge's ruling in his favour a "monumental victory".

Image: ITV

Prince William’s huge salary revealed

Buckingham Palace has released its annual report, known as the Sovereign Grant Report, into the royal family's finances, revealing Prince William's whopping annual salary.

The Palace said the findings of the report "reflects a time of unforeseen challenges for the royal family", referencing the cancer diagnosis that struck both King Charles and Princess Kate this year, as the senior royals stepped back from official duties to undergo treatment.

Despite the "challenging" year for the royals, Prince William earned a whopping salary of $45 million AUD in the last financial year.

After inheriting the title of Prince of Wales, Prince William, receives the majority of his personal wealth from the Duchy of Cornwall, which he inherited from his father after the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

That extensive estate is worth more than £1 billion (approximately $1.8b AUD) and includes 52,450 hectares of land, mostly in the south-west of England.

Prince William has made a major change since inheriting the title, choosing not to reveal how much tax he pays on the private income from the duchy.

The royal family is also set for a huge pay rise next year, as profits from the monarch's Crown Estates has risen by 53 per cent in the past financial year.

That means the monarchy is to receive a boost of more than £45 million (approximately $87m AUD).

Across 2023-24, profits for the royal family rose to £1.1 billion mainly due to offshore wind farms, meaning the Sovereign Grant (the annual payment the royals get from the government each year) will increase from £86.3 million (approximately $167m AUD) in 2024-25 to £132 million (approximately $257m AUD) in 2025-26.

The majority of the royal family's wealth comes from the Crown Estate, roughly about £16 billion (approximately $31b AUD ) of an estimated £20 billion (approximately $40b AUD).

Image credits: Isabel Infantes/WPA Pool/Shutterstock Editorial

King Charles' official portrait vandalised

The first offical portrait of King Charles has been vandalised by a group of animal rights activists.

The portrait, which is hanging in London's Philip Mould gallery until June 21st, was targeted by campaign group Animal Rising, who took to the painting with a paint roller to stick signs over the portrait of the monarch.

A video posted to the group's social media accounts captured the vandalism, showing the moment two activists covered the king’s head with an image of the British cartoon character Wallace, from the Wallace and Gromit comedy series.

A speech bubble sign was then also tacked onto the painting with the following caption, “No cheese Gromit, look at all of this cruelty on RSCPA farms.”

The action was designed to bring attention to a new report, released on Sunday by the group, which investigated 45 farms whose welfare standards are guaranteed by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), while the Animal Rising group described their findings as “damning,” alleging that they found “severe animal cruelty” at all farms visited.

‼️BREAKING: No Cheese Gromit! "Family unity is key": Sarah Ferguson gives cancer update

Sarah Ferguson has shared an update on her cancer journey during her appearance at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Duchess of York was diagnosed with skin cancer in January, not long after getting a mastectomy for her breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in June 2023.

When asked about her health, the royal told People: "This evening I am doing very well. I think that we've managed to get cancer in the right place rather than cancer ruling me. I've put cancer in the corner."

Speaking on the amfAR Gala red carpet, the 64-year-old added that it was important to be aware and get checked for both breast cancer and melanoma.

“I think you always have to be aware. I think it’s great to get checked for breast cancer [and] melanoma. I think you just have to be very candid about it," she told the publication.

“I think a lot of people get very frightened to talk about these things. I’m very happy with my mastectomy and my breasts and just to talk about it.”

Her diagnosis coincided with both her brother-in-law King Charles, and Princess Catherine's cancer diagnoses, although both of them have not disclosed what types of cancer they have.

She praised the royal family for their "unity" during these difficult times and how she has been able to offer support to Charles and Catherine.

"I think family unity is key… I think the key to life is that we all support each other," she said.

"And also forgiveness is a great thing. I think forgiveness of yourself, and forgiveness of others."

Earlier this month, the duchess' eldest daughter Princess Beatrice spoke about her mother's health in her debut TV interview on This Morning.

"She’s such a phenomenal icon. As a mum she’s been amazing," she said, adding that despite going through so much in the last year, she felt inspired by her mum's resilience and sense of purpose.

“She’s doing really well. She had a bumpy health scare last year but she’s all clear now. But I think at 64, she’s thriving. She’s been through so much, but now she’s coming into her own.

“We are just reminded when any parent or individual has a health scenario, you really need to get the checks you need as early as you possibly can.”

Image: DGP/imageSPACE/ Shutterstock editorial

A painted portrait of Kate Middleton has gone viral for all the wrong reasons, after royal fans everywhere claimed the artwork "looks nothing like" the Princess of Wales.

The image, created by artist Hannah Uzor, appeared on the front cover of UK magazine Tatler, as the artist recreated Middleton's appearance at a banquet held in South Africa in 2022.

The Princess wore a white beaded Jenny Packham gown, and also donned her famous tiara, the Lover’s Knot, which was previously worn by Princess Diana.

Uzor explained that in creating the artwork, she was inspired by the composure and bravery demonstrated by the royal mum-of-three in her emotional cancer diagnosis video in March.

“A moment of dealing with something difficult, speaking from the heart, having the courage to tackle it head-on,” she explained in awe.

However, many royal fans slated the artist on social media, simply asking, “are you kidding me?”.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tatler (@tatlermagazine)

“This is just plain weird, looks nothing like her,” one person commented.

“What have they done to her face,” asked another.

A third agreed: “Doesn’t look like Catherine at all. If she wasn’t wearing that dress I’d have no clue as to who it’s meant to be.”

“Are you kidding me? … You must be joking,” scorned someone else.

Others slated the artwork by saying they believed it looked “like it was created by a child”.

“It’s absolutely dreadful and should never have seen the light of day, let alone appear on the cover,” agreed another.

Hannah Uzor defended her artwork, saying she had to draw on other sources as she was not able to meet the Princess directly to create her portrait.

She said, “When you can’t meet the sitter in person, you have to look at everything you can find and piece together the subtle human moments revealed in different photographs: do they have a particular way of standing or holding their head or hands? Do they have a recurrent gesture?"

“[Kate] has really risen up to her role – she was born for this. She carries herself with such dignity, elegance and grace."

Image credits: Tatler Magazine / Chris Jackson/WPA Pool/Shutterstock Editorial

Petition to put Gina Rinehart's portrait in Times Square goes viral

When Gina Rinehart's portrait featured in an exhibition at the National Gallery in Canberra, she demanded it be taken down.

The gallery refused, and said it would stay hanging in the gallery until the end of the end of the exhibit on July 21st.

Rinehart's outrageous request to take down the artwork went viral on social media, and even saw her feature on Stephen Colbert's late night TV show.

Now, comedian Dan Ilic has started a petition to get the artwork displayed in New York City's iconic Times Square.

Ilic told The New Daily that it is important to celebrate Australia’s art and artists, because “not many other people are”.

“The person who was seeking for it to be removed has a unique place in Australian culture and politics, and uses their power for things that are very much in line with their interests,” he said.

“Us, using our own power as a community to try and leverage a lot of little people’s contributions to this celebration of great Australian art, is a great thing.”

Ilic said people approached him to launch the fundraising campaign because “I’ve become the person to do such things”.

“I happened to go to an art event on the weekend with some people who know [artist] Vincent Namatjirawell and I asked them to check if he would like it,” he said.

“He said it’s very funny, so we went ahead with it.”

A 10-minute slot in Times Square costs $16,000, however Ilic is campaigning to raise $30,000 to beam Rinehart’s portrait into one of the busiest locations on the planet, with any excess money being donated to Indigenous-led youth climate network Seed Mob.

He said, “By the very nature of that organisation, they’re at odds with a lot of what big corporations like Hancock Prospecting are all about.”

Ilic said he was confident about passing the $30,000 goal and making the 10-minute slot a reality, after already raising over 70 percent of his goal.

“There is an old maxim in crowdfunding: If you reach 50 per cent within the 50 per cent mark of time, you’ll get the rest,” he said.

“We hit that earlier this morning and it’s about halfway now, so I think we’ll get the rest.”

Ilic has previously campaigned to have features in Times Square, with one such ad highlighting Australia's lack of climate change action ahead of the COP26 meeting in 2021.

Image credits: Dan Ilic - Indiegogo
