“Today wasn’t my day”: Barty faces shock Olympic defeat

Ash Barty has experienced a shock loss in the first round of the Olympic singles, defeated in straight sets by world No. 48 Sara Sorribes Tormo.

The Spanish player won against the young Aussie 6-4, 6-3.

Though she made a rebound in the second set after losing two of her first three service games.

But at 3-3, Sorribes Tormo took the lead for 5-3.

Barty made 27 unforced errors, compared to five from Sorribes Tormo, and admitted she was too “loose”.

“It was a tough day. A disappointing day. I can’t lie about that,” Barty told Channel 7. “I can’t hide behind the fact that I wanted to do really well here. Today wasn’t my day.

“I knew I wanted to try to take the match on and it would be a fine line of not pushing too hard and not getting in the patterns I didn’t want to get stuck in. [I was] too erratic.”

The hot weather in Tokyo has seen some tennis players like Daniil Medvedec and Novak Djokovic ask for play to shift to night time to avoid the heat, but Barty couldn’t disagree more.

“It’s brutal. Like an Australian summer,” Barty said. “I enjoy the heat and love playing out here in these conditions. Wasn’t meant to be.”

After winning Wimbledon just two weeks ago, Barty’s Tokyo performance was “all over the place”, according to tennis commentator Jose Morgado.

American sports reporter Timothy Burke described Barty’s playing as “the worst tennis I’ve seen her play in quite a while”.

Charles McNulty, a theatre critic for the LA Times, believed Sorribes Tormo “exploited [Barty’s] backhand weakness”, while tennis writer Tumaini Carayol said the match was always going to be a tough one for the Aussie champ.

“Sorribes Tormo always looked like an extremely difficult opponent for Barty on these slow Tokyo courts, and so she was,” Carayol tweeted.

Barty had hoped to take home two gold medals from Tokyo, but her recent victory with Storm Sanders in the opening rounds of the doubles means she could still claim one gold medal.

The moment you missed on The Block: Judge Shaynna Blaze's heated showdown with Sara

Infamous The Block contestant Sara has ignited a war with judge and interior design veteran Shaynna Blaze, causing tension between the pair in last night’s episode.

Blaze offered Sara and her husband Hayden a design mentoring session after the couple came last for the third consecutive week – the offer, while accepted, caused Sara to throw a bit of a tantrum.

“There’s only so much as a human – any human – you’d be able to take,” Sara said of their negative feedback.

Before meeting with Blaze, Sara said she was filled with “dread. Dread, dread, dread, dread, dread” as she prepared for her session with the experienced judge.

While the interaction started off as civil, with Shaynna going through each room that had been previously judged and providing constructive criticism and tips, Sara was not appreciating the invaluable feedback.

The tips, which included how to nail this week's Master Bedroom challenge, was something that the other contestants were envious of, as they would have loved to learn first-hand from the expert and mogul herself.

But with Sara not being open to the critique, and Shaynna stepping foot inside the contestant's $75,000, last-placing bathroom, the interior designer’s patience started to wear thin.

“But, I guess it’s all open for interpretation," said Hayden to the designer after hearing her feedback, causing tension amongst the three.

Shaynna: “What’s your career?”

Hayden: “Project manager in construction.”

Shaynna: “Right. And yours?”

Sara: “Flight attendant.”

Shaynna: “So how are you meant to know what I’ve done for 30 years? Just putting it out there. That’s why I’m here.”

Shaynna then proceeded to advise the pair on different aspects of designing a master bedroom, touching on elements such as wall colourings, bedside tables, the lot.

But Sara wasn’t having it.

“It was … good advice. Whether or not she likes it is a whole other kettle of fish. I just can’t be bothered with high hopes again," said Shaynna.

“I actually don’t know if they really listened. They think they’ve got the direction absolutely perfect.”

Viewers at home took to Twitter to vent out their frustrations as many believed that the couple did not deserve to be mentored by the judge as they seemed less than grateful.

Sara woke with dread while every other contestant would have woken with excitement to get a 1:1 with Shaynna or Sheena as Sara likes to call her. #9TheBlock
— Nez (@fraggle73) 28 August 2018

Anyone would kill for this one on one time and hints from shaynna and yet Sara doesn’t care. Heartbreak as boy dies from brain cancer months after mum

A Melbourne father has tragically had to say goodbye to his two-year-old son who died of brain cancer, just six months after his wife’s death from the same rare disease.

After overcoming her first diagnosis nearly a decade ago, Sara Chivers learned she had developed three brain tumours in March last year.

Months later, she and husband, Leigh, discovered their youngest son, Alfie, was also battling brain cancer.

When Sara’s own treatment began to fail, she turned her attention to preparing her young family for life after she was gone. Aussie mum’s heartbreaking final message before dying of cancer

Sara Chivers, a Melbourne mum of two who was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer just before learning her 18-month-old son also had a brain tumour, passed away peacefully in her sleep at 7 am on Sunday, surrounded by family.

Before she died, Sara shared her heartbreaking story as part of a feature and photoshoot in Vogue Australia – one of her bucket list items.

In the piece, Sara reflects on the moment she learnt of her diagnosis, the highs and lows of her life, and the hopes and dreams she wished could have come true.

“Brain cancer and I first met when I was training for my first half-marathon at age 25 and collapsed at work,” Sarah recalled. “Three surgeries and seven weeks of radiation therapy later, I had scar tissue and a large cavity in my brain, but the beast was effectively tamed.

“I got on with life, the spectre of cancer becoming less terrifying as years passed. Then on a muggy day in March last year, in a room with scuffed walls and bad light, I had a death sentence delivered while Melbourne went by outside. That was surreal. It’s surreal to know I have been given such a short life timeframe. To know I won’t get to see Hugh and Alfie start school, graduate, forge careers, find partners, get married, have their own children.

“But then came the cruellest twist. In September, Alfie was also diagnosed with an aggressive and rare form of brain cancer. Some statistics suggest three children in one million have it. There are no words that do justice to the way in which our hearts have been shattered for our beautiful little boy. Blood tests could not find an inherited genetic mutation, so this may just be the most horrible of coincidences. Lightning can strike twice.

“After Alfie was diagnosed I had surgery on the most insistent of my tumours and started radiotherapy again, in a last-roll-of-the-dice scenario. And I kicked the memory project into high gear. Hugh and Alfie need to know about who I really am, and how much I love them and their dad and the world we made. Now able to only type with my left hand, I am fighting to tell my story, not the kind, homogenised one everyone knows, but my own.

“I can’t stand price tags that leave behind that sticky film. My perfume of choice is Michael Kors. My consumption of Whittaker’s coconut chocolate is next level. Chick lit is my favourite literary genre. I’ve always had an obsession with numbers and dates (I loathe odd numbers). Winter is my preferred season. I wish I was a better cook.

“At the heart of the Sara jigsaw, far from the edges, is Leigh. We went to brother and sister schools and there was a lot of fanfare about him, because of his good looks and athletic build. We first kissed after a rowing after-party and I didn’t find out until years later that one of our friends said that night we would get married, which we did on a fabulous, riotous day in 2012.

“I had always considered myself a career woman, then suddenly the desire to have a baby was all-consuming. It took five months of trying before those two thin lines appeared. We wanted to tell our families on Christmas Day and I gave Leigh the responsibility. After we unwrapped presents, one was left under the tree. Leigh said it was for me. I pulled out a Country Road baby onesie and the significance dawned on the family. I burst into tears.

“After 10 tumultuous months with Hugh, we were both shell-shocked and delighted to find out I was pregnant again. It felt right, making a home and having two perfect children to care for. Now, my marriage and family have given me something special to live for, which sometimes makes it even harder to think about not being part of their future. Ten years on, I am in love with Leigh’s courage, care and willingness to pick up the pieces and continue to move our family forward regardless of the obstacles in our way.

“My love for Leigh knows no bounds, so I would always want him to find happiness, with me or after I’m gone. More than anything, I want to be there to see our family grow together, but I find the thought of another long-term female presence just as comforting for the boys’ future and Leigh’s happiness. Leigh is too young to live the rest of his life alone. I have faith he will make the right choice for himself and the boys.

“The doctors really don’t know how much time I have left. It’s all about options and how long they might be effective for. Right now my greatest fear is not so much how much time, but how much quality time. With my speech now being affected, I’m more fearful of further loss of capabilities than how much time I have left.

“Underneath the complexity and sadness of our situation, I believe nothing can be wholly good or bad unless we choose or decide it is this way. I am a perfectionist, priding myself on impeccable manners, hard work, style. But I am also honest: I must let go of my previous life and absorb that the odds are no longer in my favour. I hope by telling my story, I can help change this for Alfie and those yet to be diagnosed.”

Rest in peace, Sara.

Olympic medallist Geoff Huegill has found a new career in the pool cleaning business, taking on the role of client manager for The Pool & Spa Whisperer, a premium swimming pool and spa service, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

The swimming champion says he fell into what must be the perfect job for a retired swimmer.

“It’s been good, I’ve really enjoyed it because I’m not stuck in an office,” the Huegill told the Wentworth Courier.

“I’ve been around swimming pools for 35 years of my life so I understand filtration systems and pumps and backwashes and what’s not to love?” he said.

“So for me I’ve fallen into the business by chance, but it’s always one of those things when you are asked how you got into it — especially with jobs that people didn’t expect — well, yes, I fell into the business but it’s something I’ve really enjoyed. It suits my personality to a tee.”

Huegill admits that people do get a shock sometimes when he walks into their backyard.

“Occasionally I rock up to people’s backyards and people do get that shock of ‘wow what are you doing here?’ But we work with a team of guys and a team of technicians that come and take the headache and the pain away for the real estate agent or the pool owner.”

His main role is working in with real estate agents, property managers and getting business.

Huegill, who has two daughters Milla, 5, and Gigi, 3, with his wife Sara, is also a swim coach and mentor at Cook & Phillip Aquatic Centre with his HBT Swim Academy.

Huegill won silver in the 4x100m medley relay and bronze in the 100m butterfly at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and made a comeback in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games to win gold in 4x100m medley relay and 100m butterfly.
