How this driver lost 22 demerit points and $1800 in a single traffic stop

A NSW learner driver has been hit with nearly $1,800 in fines and an eye-watering 22 demerit points in a single traffic stop, prompting police to issue a stern reminder about the importance of following road rules – especially for novice drivers.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when Mittagong Highway Patrol officers clocked a silver Saab convertible travelling at 129km/h in a 110km/h zone on the Hume Highway near Penrose.

What initially appeared to be a simple speeding matter quickly snowballed into a catalogue of serious offences. The driver – a male holder of a NSW Learner's Class C licence – should not have been travelling above 90km/h and was also found not to be displaying the required yellow L plates on either the front or rear of the vehicle.

Upon stopping the vehicle at 4.15pm, officers discovered a mobile phone mounted near the steering wheel, playing a YouTube music video. When questioned, the driver swiped the screen to a map app and claimed he was "just looking at the map". In NSW, learner and provisional drivers are prohibited from using a mobile phone for any reason, including navigation.

Compounding the offences, the driver’s female supervisor told police she had been asleep in the passenger seat – a direct violation of her legal duty to actively supervise the learner.

The full list of infringements included: Exceeding speed by more than 30km/h: $1,045 fine and 10 demerit points (doubled for long weekend); Learner using a mobile phone: $410 fine and 10 demerit points (doubled); Failure to display L plates: $320 fine and 2 demerit points (doubled).

With double demerits in effect due to the long weekend, the driver racked up 22 demerit points – far exceeding the four-point limit for learners – resulting in an automatic licence suspension, with a formal disqualification from NSW Transport to follow.

The female supervisor also received a penalty for failing to fulfil her supervisory obligations.

NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol officers said the case is a stark example of reckless behaviour behind the wheel and urged all drivers, especially learners, to understand and respect the rules of the road.

Images: NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Command

“This is exactly what not to do,” an officer said.

New evidence points to fossilised remains of Noah's Ark

A team of international researchers has reignited a centuries-old debate after uncovering new evidence suggesting that the Durupinar Formation in Turkey could be the fossilised remains of Noah’s Ark.

According to The Jerusalem Post, experts have found that the boat-shaped mound – long believed by some to be the biblical vessel – was likely submerged underwater during a catastrophic flood approximately 5,000 years ago.

Located roughly 35km south of Mount Ararat’s summit, near the Iranian border in Turkey’s Dogubayazit district, the 164-metre geological structure has fascinated researchers and religious scholars for decades. Composed primarily of limonite, an iron-rich ore, the formation closely matches the biblical description of Noah’s Ark. The Book of Genesis describes the ark’s dimensions as “a length of three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits,” which align with the measurements of the Durupinar site.

Since 2021, an international team has been studying the formation to determine whether it could indeed be a massive preserved vessel. Their latest findings provide compelling evidence that the region was once covered in water.

Soil samples taken from the site contain traces of clay-like materials, marine deposits, and even remnants of seafood—suggesting the area was submerged between 3,500 and 5,000 years ago, around the same time as the biblical flood.

Professor Faruk Kaya, one of the lead researchers, stated, “According to the initial results, it’s believed there were human activities in this region since the Chalcolithic period.” The presence of marine deposits further supports the theory that the area once harbored aquatic life before being inundated.

“Our studies show that this region harboured life in that period and that, at some point, it was covered by water, which reinforces the possibility that a catastrophic event of great magnitude occurred,” the researchers explained.

The Durupinar Formation was first discovered in 1948 and has since been the subject of intense debate. While some believe it could be the fossilized remains of Noah’s Ark, others argue it is simply a natural rock formation shaped by geological forces.

Religious texts from Christianity, Judaism and Islam all recount the story of Noah and the ark, but the scientific community has yet to confirm its historical accuracy. Nevertheless, recent findings have fueled speculation that the biblical flood may have a basis in reality.

“The evidence suggests that the story might have a basis in reality,” researchers concluded, leaving the door open for further exploration and debate.

Image: Facebook

The reason behind Sam Armytage’s shock split from husband

New details have emerged over the possible reason behind Sam Armytage’s shock split from her husband.

The former Sunrise host announced her separation from husband Richard Lavender on Friday, telling The Daily Telegraph, "Yes, Richard and I have separated. All breakups are hard, but it’s somewhat lessened by the fact it’s amicable and we wish the best for each other."

Samantha and Richard began dating in April 2019 and announced their engagement in June 2020, getting married just a few months later on New Year’s Eve 2020.

The news of their split comes just weeks before what would’ve been their fourth wedding anniversary.

While news of the split came as a shock to most people last week, an insider told Yahoo Lifestyle the break-up has apparently been widely speculated within the TV industry for months now thanks to one telling clue.

According to the source, Armytage’s move from Channel Seven to the Nine Network - ahead of her upcoming hosting gig of The Golden Bachelor - was a major hint that something was not right in the couple’s relationship.

"As soon as Sam announced she was leaving Seven for Nine and making a big TV comeback, we all started suspecting something had happened as her main reason for initially quitting Sunrise was to be with him and settle down away from the industry," the source claimed.

After the split was confirmed, many began speculating on the reason behind their separation, and while some publications claimed that tension between Armytage and Lavender's daughters was the reason, nothing has been confirmed.

The insider tells Yahoo Lifestyle, "Sam’s been keeping the details pretty quiet but the impression everyone gets is she just wasn’t ready to retire and give everything up yet, which is more likely to have caused tensions as Rich is notoriously private."

"Heartbroken and blindsided": The Beast's ex-girlfriend opens up about split

The ex-girlfriend of The Chase star Mark Labbett, also known as The Beast, has opened up about her high-profile break-up with the TV star, slamming his behaviour in the last weeks of their relationship.

Hayley Palmer, an entertainment news presenter, announced her split from Labbett just days after their one year anniversary, sharing the news on Instagram in May.

Now, in an interview with The Sun newspaper, Palmer took aim at Labbett and his alleged handling of their split, saying she had been “blindsided” by their break-up, and shared how he had lived up to his name as The Beast.

“It has come as a complete shock. I thought we were really happy,” she said.

“I’m heartbroken and blindsided. His behaviour has been beastly.”

Palmer went on to say that Labbett dumped her over a callous three-minute phone call, and said their breakup came because The Beast did not want to formally divorce his ex-wife Katie, who is also his second cousin.

She went on to say that before their shock split, Mark — who has a seven-year-old son with his former wife — had even suggested they move in together.

But in the days following, a phone call came from Labbett to end their relationship.

Struggling to hold back tears, Hayley told the publication, “The call started off as a normal conversation. He was spending time with his son and we’d had a conversation about me joining them at a water park."

“Then he said, ‘I don’t know how to tell you this, but you were right. I don’t want to divorce my ex-wife’.

“The shock of the way he said it was so brutally cold and not the Mark I know. I thought he was a gentle giant, so this was the complete opposite. He was as cold as ice."

“The phone went from my hands, I just hung up on him. I ended up walking around for three hours not knowing where I was going."

“I’ll never get over the shock of that, I’m still in shock now. It’s such a hurtful way to do it. The fact that he didn’t have the respect for me, and for him to do it over the phone — it was a really low move."

Historic lighthouse keeper's cottage up for sale

A cottage next to Macquarie Lighthouse has been put up for sale, and one lucky buyer will have the chance to say they live next to one of the country's oldest lighthouses.

Located on beautiful South Head Vaucluse, the lighthouse itself has stood since 1883 and it is the second tower built there after the first convict-designed one deteriorated.

You don't have to worry about any noise as there's only one neighbour in sight.

"How many houses can you buy with a lighthouse next door," McGrath sales agent Robert Alfeldi said.

For $12 million, the lucky buyer will get the heritage home that was built 1881, with most of its original fittings still in tact and an old stables building, perched on 2600 square metres of land.

Although the property has kept most of its original elements, the interior - specifically the kitchen and bathroom - have been updated into more modern versions of the original.

However, those looking to renovate the property and add a second floor should look for a different property as it is a heritage home, so it limits what future owners can add.

“It’s quite a unique property. People show up thinking they can put a second storey on. But it is what it is for a reason," Alfeidi said.

Iconic properties like this don't go for sale often, and tends to create a buzz among wealthy potential buyers.

The property was previously sold in October 2016 for $7 million.

Images: Domain/ Nine

Widow "cranky" after Qantas denied late husband's points claim

A widowed grandmother has been left frustrated after Qantas refused to let her claim the 6,800 frequent flyer points in her late husband's account.

72-year-old Rhonda told Yahoo that she reached out to the airline after Brian - her husband of 52 years - passed away in May.

Rhonda hoped to claim his frequent flyer points, but was met with a brutal rejection letter instead.

While they offered their "sincere condolences", it also stated Qantas' "terms and conditions" didn't allow such a transfer, and Rhonda was asked to send through a copy of Brian's death certificate so they could close his account.

"I know it's not a lot of points but it's the principle of it because, damn, you get hardly anything out of it anyway," she told Yahoo.

"I just thought it would naturally come to me so, once I told them he passed away, I could've easily gone in and transferred them to myself without telling them but I wanted to do the right thing."

Four months later, Qantas announced that from October they would change their policy to allow next of kin to claim frequent flyer points.

When Rhonda heard about this, she reached out to the airline again.

"I immediately wrote back and said that, 'After hearing the news item, I was under the impression you were now looking at this'," she said.

"I haven't heard a word back since. I don't know if they're just ignoring me.

"I've just had enough," she added.

The grandmother-of-five added that she was "cranky" with the airline.

"Everywhere I turn there's a barrier, and what's 6,800 points to them?

"They are trying to keep their reputation intact and until I heard that announcement I was done with it. Now I still haven't heard and I am cranky about it," she concluded.

Fortunately, after Rhonda shared her complaints with the media, Qantas eventually credited her the points, although she remains unimpressed with the "ridiculous" process.

A Qantas spokesperson has also offered their sincere apologies to Rhonda.

"Our customer team have been in contact with her to advise that her husbands' points have now been transferred to her frequent flyer account," they said.

Rhonda said that she hopes to use the points for a holiday and explore the outback in the iconic The Ghan train next year.

Image: Daily Mail/ Getty

This revelation came shortly after Bonneville attended a co-star's wedding without his wedding ring.

A spokesperson for the actor confirmed the separation, stating, "I can confirm that Hugh Bonneville and Lulu Williams have separated," as reported by the UK Sun.

Sources close to the situation reveal that the decision to split was initiated by Bonneville himself. Williams reportedly felt that their lengthy 25-year marriage had been devalued, given Bonneville's recent focus on various aspects of his life.

The source explained, "Hugh has been away from home filming a lot this year. He has lost a bit of weight this summer, he was looking trim, tanned and relaxed."

Signs of trouble in their relationship first emerged when the 59-year-old actor attended the wedding of his Downton Abbey co-star, Michelle Dockery, without his wedding ring and without Lulu.

Their last public appearance together dates back to April when they attended a gala at the Old Vic Theatre in London.

Bonneville had previously praised his estranged wife, referring to her as his "bedrock" and "anchor", according to the UK Sun. He humorously recounted their initial connection, saying, "Lulu was running a marquee company … my mother rang her to hire some chairs or something and said, 'Do you remember Hugh?' and that was how we reconnected," though he jokingly added that it "infuriated" him that he had to "give full credit" to his mother.

To commemorate their 20th anniversary, the couple renewed their vows at the Graceland chapel in Las Vegas just five years ago. Bonneville and Williams initially met as teenagers but didn't embark on a romantic relationship until their 30s. They exchanged their vows in November 1998 and share a son, Felix, who is now 20 years old.

Images: Instagram

Sam Newman grilled point-blank: "Are you a racist?"

Sam Newman has been left struggling to come up with an answer after being asked if he is a racist.

The former AFL player spoke with Tony Jones on 3AW radio on Thursday, as he doubled down on recent comments that encouraged Australians to boo during Welcome to Country acknowledgements.

While defending his opinions, Newman was asked point-blank by Jones, "Are you a racist?"

Newman stuttered in response, "Now... what a... No, no, please..."

Jones clarified his question, "I think there would be people listening to this at the moment with an open mind that would want me to ask that question."

Newman became immediately defensive, asking in retaliation, "Please... now you tell me what you think a racist is besides saying me ... Who have I vilified? I don't think you know what racism is.

"Racism is about hate primarily and it's if you defile, decry or degrade someone, think you're superior than them or try to dominate them."

"It's the most overworked word in the English lexicon at the minute... you tell me why anything I've said and what I've done is anything to do with racism."

Newman then went on to highlight the past controversy surrounding Indigenous AFL legend Adam Goodes, saying he was relentlessly booed while playing because of an incident on the field, and not because of his race.

"[In 2015] Adam Goodes was booed because he pretended to throw a spear at the Carlton cheer squad after the Swans were beating them by 10 goals at half-time and wondered why people... people get booed on the football field, not because of their skin colour, but because of things they do," Newman said.

"I know that, everyone knows that. Then the AFL waded into this... and said 'please don't boo Adam Goodes'. That's like red rag to a bull."

Contrary to Newman's comments, Goodes had been booed for weeks prior to tha incident by the crowd every time he neared the ball, with the crowd escalating their behaviour, which resulted in fans being kicked out of the stadium.

Newman also insisted he was not attempting to incite violence against First Nations Australians after he urged people to boo the Welcome to Country at the AFL Grand Final.

"We like to go to the football and watch the game without being told to vote for the gay marriage proposal, which is fine, without being told to vote for the Voice - I know (the AFL) has retracted their direction to vote Yes for the Voice. Why do they get involved?" he said.

"I'll tell you. It's an absolute hoax. It's a rort. Welcome to Country. Why do we have to be welcomed to the country we live in? Why is that? It is just a mark of division. The people who welcome you to country get a nice stipend out of it. Why do they charge to have it? It is just a rort."

Just prior to his radio appearance, senator Lidia Thorpe once again blasted his comments on the Today Show.

"Sam Newman, I'm not sure why he's even in the news. He's irrelevant to any debate of the time," she said on Thursday morning.

"It's about peace. The whole message behind it is respect."

"Sam Newman is not a respectful man at the best of times. He needs to educate himself."

New theory in Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness split

News of Hugh Jackman and Deborah-Lee Furness’ split after 27 years of marriage shocked the world, and now celebrity experts are sharing their theories.

US broadcaster Cooper Lawrence shared her theory in an interview with Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington on Monday morning.

Lawrence claimed that the couple were waiting for their two adopted children Oscar, 23, and Ava, 18, to grow old enough before they had an amicable split.

“I think [Jackman and Furness] were waiting until the kids were old enough that they could have an amicable split and not worry about child custody or how much everybody is going to pay each other,” she told the Sunrise hosts.

She added that child custody battles are what make high-profile divorces “messy”, which could explain the timing of the divorce.

“They don’t have to worry about that because the kids are older, so now they can just split their multi-millions and all their properties, which is a lot.”

The couple have properties in New York, Sydney and The Hamptons.

Lawrence added that the rumour mill began spinning on “the Broadway scene” sometime last year after the couple sold their three-storey New York apartment.

“For a while on the Broadway scene there was a rumour there might be something going on in that marriage and people were like, ‘This is kind of odd,’ but as soon as they sold their three-floor apartment... and downsized and then shipped a bunch of furniture home to Sydney, it was like ‘What’s really going on here?’” she said.

She added that while celebrity splits are nothing new, some fans have taken it harder than others because some celebrities make them believe in true love.

“Every time there was a think piece about Hollywood couples that made us believe in love, (Jackman and Furness) were always at the top of the list,” Lawrence explained.

“They are always talking about each other and they were the ‘it couple’ for anybody that’s a little older than their younger spouse.

“They were role models for everything in relationships.”

Fans aren't the only ones devastated by the divorce. The Wolverine actor broke his silence the day after their separation statement went public, and shared that it was "a difficult time.'

Image: Getty/Kevin Mazur/WireImage

Hugh Jackman "devastated" after marriage split

Hugh Jackman has publicly addressed his recent separation for the first time since the news surfaced on Friday September 15. Photographed while running errands in the streets of New York, Jackman's ring finger conspicuously lacked a wedding ring. When approached by a photographer about the breakup, he declined to delve into details, simply stating, "It doesn't feel quite right talking about it on the street."

The 54-year-old actor did, however, acknowledge the challenging situation with a brief remark, saying, "It's a difficult time," before courteously smiling at the photographer and resuming his errands.

His appearance comes in the wake of reports indicating that he was profoundly affected by his split from his wife of 27 years, Deborra-lee Furness. However, some sources suggest that the separation had been a long time coming.

The New York Post's Page Six section cited a source close to Jackman who said that he is “devastated” by the split and that he is “very sad".

An insider from Broadway, where Jackman returned for "The Music Man" in February 2022, revealed that the breakup wasn't a recent development, sharing, "It happened a while ago. Friends and family knew about it."

They added that there was no involvement of a third party and that the couple had gradually evolved into more like "roommates"

The announcement of their separation came as a shock to their worldwide fanbase. The couple shared their decision to part ways through a statement released via People magazine, expressing their gratitude for nearly three decades of marriage and explaining their choice to separate in pursuit of individual growth. The statement concluded by requesting privacy during this transitional phase in their lives.

“We have been blessed to share almost three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage,” the statement read. “Our journey now is shifting, and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.”

Jackman and Furness then added that “our family has been and always will be our highest priority” as “we undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love and kindness”.

“We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives,” the statement continued before they signed off as “Deb and Hugh Jackman”.

“This is the sole statement either of us will make,” the pair concluded.

Jackman and Furness first crossed paths while working together on the Australian miniseries Correlli in 1995. Jackman, who had previously described their connection as love at first sight, knew he wanted to marry Furness just weeks after meeting her. They tied the knot on April 11, 1996.

Their journey together included overcoming miscarriages and embarking on an IVF journey before deciding to adopt. In 2000, they welcomed their son, Oscar, into their family, followed by the adoption of their daughter, Ava, five years later.

Jackman had often openly expressed his deep affection for Furness throughout their marriage. Shortly before the news of their separation emerged, he shared a heartfelt message on Instagram celebrating their 27th wedding anniversary, professing his enduring love and admiration for his wife.

In a recent development, Furness was spotted without her wedding ring just days before the news of their separation became public.

Images: Instagram
