Zoo's upright bear accused of being just a guy in a suit

A Chinese zoo has had to be completely trans-bear-ant about its popular sun bear, following allegations that it was actually a human in disguise.

The Hangzhou Zoo in China gained international recognition after video footage of their sun bear standing on its hind legs and waving at visitors caused many to paws and look twice.

Many were bear-side themselves with excitement as theories that it was a human in disguise continued to spread.

The local Hangzhou Daily first reported on the attention that the four-year-old sun bear named Angela was receiving.

“Because of the way they stand, some people online question whether they are ‘humans in disguise’,” they wrote.

As Angela gained popularity, experts were summoned and had to confirm that the bear was in fact fur-real.

Ashleigh Marshall, an expert from Chester Zoo, told BBC News that the animal “is definitely a real bear,” and affirmed to doubtful visitors that sun bears do often “look a lot like people in costumes”.

The animal expert also pointed out that the folds on the sun bear’s back weren’t because the costume was loose, but its actual function is to protect the bear from predators and allow them to “turn around” and fight back if attacked.

Various representatives of the zoo have had to come out and release statements addressing the controversy.

A spokesperson has reportedly said that the state-run facility would never intentionally deceive people, in an audio clip circulating on popular Chinese social media platform WeChat.

“Some people think I stand like a person,” read another social media post, written from the point of view of the bear.

“It seems you don't understand me very well.”

Another spokesperson for the zoo has also denied the allegations and said that a human in a fur bear suit “would not last more than a few minutes before collapsing” in the 40°C summer temperatures.

Images: Twitter / WeChat

John Travolta’s iconic suit snatches a sweaty sum at auction

John Travolta’s sweat stains have hit the market, snagging a staggering sum, alongside the iconic Saturday Night Fever white three-piece suit.

The look rose to international fame when Travolta - as Tony Manero - took to the dancefloor in the 1977 classic, joining Stephanie Mangano for an intense disco dance competition.

But it was the film’s promotional imagery that truly immortalised the suit - despite popular, yet incorrect, belief that Travolta had flaunted it during his solo ‘Night Fever’ dance. In posters - as well as on VCR, DVD, and CD covers - Travolta can be seen with his right arm in the air, on a dancefloor, white polyester front and centre.

As Costume designer Patrizia von Brandenstein explained to the New York Post, they were looking for “a white, three-piece suit: dressy, inexpensive and polyester. There was a producer who thought a black suit would be more elegant. But heroes wear white; it’s as simple as that.

“The pastel suits were nice and pretty, but John’s character is very much a hero. Plus, it needed to be something that a boy who works in a paint store would be able to afford. I think the suit sold for $150 or $200.”

Initially purchased off the rack in Brooklyn for $100, the jacket - with matching waistcoat, flared trousers, black shirt, and Travolta’s 45-year-old sweat stains - was expected to fetch up to $250,000 USD (~$374,000 AUD) when it went under the hammer at Los Angeles’ Julien’s Auctions.

Despite its distinct lack of a thorough cleaning, the suit did find a new home, with a buyer dishing out a total of approximately $388,692 AUD to call it their own.

As a spokesperson for the auction house explained, “This suit is considered to be one of the most iconic costumes in cinema history. It is one of only two known to exist that was used during production. It has never been exhibited or sold at auction before.

“It has become emblematic of not only the film but of the whole disco era.”

The suit in question was actually one of a few purchased by the film’s costume designer - two were used on set, rotated in and out while the other dried, and another was used for promotional material - and was given to Julien’s Auctions by an anonymous collector who had received it from Saturday Night Fever’s director, John Badham in 1991.

As for why the iconic outfit was being sold in its unique condition, the executive director of Julien’s Auctions had a simple explanation.

“The sweat is how you know it’s authentic,” Martin J Nolan told The Guardian.

“It was incredibly hot during filming, so you can still see the sweat marks around his waist. We never wash memorabilia. People want the stains, the DNA, particularly when a suit like this one hasn’t been auctioned before.”

Images: Getty

How to find a hairstyle that best suits your face shape

Booking in a hair appointment can bring on both feelings of excitement as well as anxiousness. Joy in the hope of getting the best haircut of your life. Anxiety surrounds the daunting task of entrusting your locks over to someone else and not being able to articulate what you’re after. More often than not, though, getting adequate time in the chair to chat through your current hairstyle concerns, what options will bring out your best features and what style you want to go with, is a luxury that doesn’t get the time it deserves. The result of this situation? You leave the salon with a mediocre cut you don’t love.

Before your next haircut, spend time thinking about what suits your face shape. To help you make a considered choice, Over60 spoke to two hairdressers about how to make your locks best complement your bone structure. Aleks Abadia, co-founder and hair director at Esstudio Galleria along with hairstylist, educator and Phillips HairCare ambassador, Lizzie Liros, offer their advice on what hairstyle will work best for you.

Round face

Both Aleks and Lizzie agree that in order to give more dimension to a round face, it’s all about creating layers and texture. Aleks suggests, “A side part or fringe gradually longer at the sides will help your face appear slender”. Lizzie, on the other hand, suggests a slightly more daring cut. “A short, pixie cut helps soften the roundness of the face and draws attention to facial features or the hairstyle itself, rather than the face shape. Or, a long bob that sits at the collarbone is another beautiful style for round faces, helping lengthen the face”.

Whatever style you choose, be sure to work in texture or even colour variation in the form of highlights.

Square or heart-shaped face

For those with a square or heart-shaped face, it’s important to balance out your strong bone structure. Aleks says “layering at the front adds texture. A centre part and longer sides will also help to soften the face shape”.

Lizzie’s ideal haircut for square-shaped faces is a mid-length, layered bob. “This style will help move attention away from the jawline, to the cheekbones. If you want to wear your hair longer, just ensure you add in lots of layers (or soft curls) to soften the sharper angles of a square face shape”.

Oval face

For those lucky oval-shaped beauties out there, we have good news. Aleks refers to this as “The perfect head” because “almost any style will suit and a sweeping bang will always add something a little extra to your style!”

If you want to draw attention away from your “long face”, Lizzie says that any soft fringe with movement helps shorten the face and draws attention to features such as the eyes. “Layers, soft waves or curls on either long or mid-length styles help frame an oval face making the face appear more rounded. An all-in-one length would draw attention to the long facial shape.”

Oblong face

An oblong face shape is longer than an oval shape, so you can get away with heavy, dramatic fringes. Aleks warns about controlling the style though. “If hair is kept at one length, this will make the face appear longer. Layers, texture and volume is the way to go.”

Lizzie agrees, explaining that “The body and wave will help soften the long, straight lines of the oblong face shape and create a really pretty overall finish”.

Diamond face

Lizzie explains, “With a diamond face shape we want to draw attention away from the wearers narrow chin, minimize the wide cheek-bones and shorten the face length”.

According to Aleks, there are a few ways to do this. “They can do both short structured bold cuts or long cuts with lots of layers and movement.”

What really works for diamond-face shapes is long sweeping layers, pulled back styles, deep side parts and soft fringes around the forehead. Just be sure to avoid too much volume at the crown or around the sides of the face.

Triangular face

For triangular faces, Aleks swears by “A blunt bob, with a face-framing bang”. This will soften the face with very subtle layers to add soft movement.

However, Lizzie disagrees, arguing that you want to avoid styles that draw attention to your jawline, so blunt bobs are out! She instead suggests “long, soft layers styled with waves, a short pixie cut (fringe cut very short) or textured mid length styles with a soft layered fringe are all gorgeous styles for this face shape.”

How to build a share portfolio to suit yourself

There is nothing like a global pandemic and the economic fallout to shake up one’s share portfolio. What worked in the past may now have to be put under the microscope. Unprecedented Central Bank interventions, record low interest rates and the highest unemployment rates since the great Depression, are a challenging backdrop to stock selection for the medium to long-term. It is reasonable to assume that share price volatility will remain as economies adjust to the post-Covid world.

Whilst share prices have rallied, the same cannot be said of the dividends. The payout of total dividends from the ASX200 expected to fall by over 20 per cent this year. But you know that already, as a stream of companies have either cancelled, deferred or reduced their 2020 dividends. It shouldn’t come as a huge shock as the Australian dividend payout ratio has been consistently higher (circa 70-80 per cent) than the rest of the world (sub 60 per cent), post GFC. As cashflows contract companies have no choice but to reduce the dividend payout.

So, what do you when the dividend favourites and the stalwarts of the last 20 years pose a real threat to your income? Firstly, don’t panic as it is not all doom and gloom; however, it may mean you need to restructure your share portfolio.

As every share portfolio is different and everyone has been invested for varying periods and have different aims and goals, it is not possible to say categorically what you should do. But here are some tips to help you through the process, so that you can construct the optimal portfolio of shares for you!

How much do you need? Establish how much income you need and whether part of that income can be swapped for a capital gain. Assess your share market returns in a total sense (capital gain and income).

Assess the shareholdings you have; it took 10 years for the total Australian dividend payout to return to the pre-GFC levels. This does not necessarily mean this will the case going forward. But you do need to assess whether you can accept lower dividends from your incumbent shares and use capital instead, until the economy picks up and the flow on effects are felt in corporate profits and higher dividends.

Add some growth. Shares that are able to grow their dividend over time are the winners. As a rule of thumb these shares have a lower dividend yield, think healthcare shares versus the banks, but they have delivered a higher total return (capital gain and dividend income). It is probably prudent to add some growth to your portfolio, which can usually be found in shares that yield around 2-3 per cent but have the capacity to grow dividends over the next 10 years.

Add some defensive shares. In a post covid world, some defensive shares are probably prudent. I know the big rotation is on into the bombed-out cyclicals. However in the absence of a vaccine or improved cures, we are faced with a world that needs to accept the virus remains. Returning to a pre-covid economy and the way we work, rest and play is developing but business as usual remains a way off. The share market will be very sensitive to any covid outbreaks like we are witnessing in Beijing and parts of the USA (not to mention the continued growth in the emerging markets).

Lower for Longer. The head of the Federal Reserve, J. Powell made it very clear at the last Fed meeting, rates will stay low in the US until 2022. Whether this transpires, remains to be seen. But it is prudent to assume we will continue to a lower for longer interest rate environment, meaning a 2-4 per cent dividend yield on non-financial shares is a reasonable expectation.

High dividend yields may be a trap. Any shares that offer a high dividend yield, excluding the iron ore producers who are raking in the cash from $100 plus iron ore prices, should be treated with caution. This means there is the potential for dividend disappointment and possible capital erosion. The four large banks are a case in point.

I like to mix up my share portfolio with some growth, some defensive shares and maybe even a quality bank, like Commonwealth. In these uncertain times, quality shares, with strong balance sheets, good corporate governance and identifiable earnings streams will offer older investors comfort. Of course, a vaccine would change everything overnight, so if you are feeling bullish about human ingenuity then you could add some deep cyclicals like an airline or travel company.

Danielle Ecuyer has been involved in share investing in Australia and internationally for over three decades, both professionally and personally. Australia’s decisive win on plain packaging paves way for other countries to follow suit

The decision, handed down on June 9 by the World Trade Organisation’s appeals body, that Australia’s plain packaging tobacco control policy doesn’t flout WTO laws marks the end of almost a decade of legal wrangling over this landmark public health policy. And more importantly, it paves the way for other nations around the world to follow Australia’s lead.

In 2012 Australia became the first country in the world to implement tobacco plain packaging laws, having recognised that the tobacco industry uses packaging both to market cigarettes and to undermine health warnings.

The industry has long acknowledged the powerful role of packaging design in attracting consumers and reinforcing brand image. A 2017 trade article on the “premiumisation” of cigarettes explained the rationale behind glossy packaging:

Features such as velvet touch, soft touch, etching, rise and relief can be applied across the surface of the packaging to make the product more impactful and raise customer engagement. The look of the packaging such as intense metallics through the use of foil simulation inks can also give cigarette packaging the luxurious effect and adds on to the premium feel of the product.

A Cancer Research UK video shows how children react to glossy cigarette packs.

The “plain packaging” mandated by Australia’s laws is in fact anything but. It features graphic, full-colour health warnings presented on a drab brown background. Brand logos, designs, emblems, and slogans are banned; product brand names remain, but must appear in a standardised font.

The result means tobacco packages can no longer serve as mini billboards that make cigarettes look aspirational and desirable.

Legal challenges

The tobacco industry launched three separate legal challenges to the law. First, JT International and British American Tobacco filed a lawsuit in the Australian High Court. Next, tobacco firm Philip Morris sought legal protection for its packaging designs under an existing investment treaty between Australia and Hong Kong. Finally, the industry filed a dispute through the WTO on behalf of four tobacco-producing countries: Cuba, Honduras, Indonesia and the Dominican Republic.

In 2012 the High Court ruled in favour of the Australian government, and in 2015 the investment treaty tribunal dismissed Philip Morris Asia’s claim. The WTO also ruled in Australia’s favour in 2018, but the Dominican Republic and Honduras appealed.

That appeal was denied last week, meaning all legal challenges to Australia’s plain packaging laws have now been finally and decisively overruled – more than a decade after the then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd first announced the policy in April 2010.

No more industry blocking

The WTO’s appeal body agreed plain packaging laws are likely to improve public health and that they are not unfairly restrictive to trade.

The appeal was not expected to succeed, so the ruling comes as no surprise. But despite this, legal wrangling has become a standard tobacco industry practice, particularly through international channels such as the WTO. One reason is because the slow and cumbersome legal process can serve as a deterrent to other countries, who may hold off implementing similar laws until the legal outcome is known.

Encouragingly, this stalling tactic seems to be losing its power. Countries such as France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, and New Zealand have all forged ahead with plain packaging legislation despite the outstanding appeal.

Now, however, lower-income countries can also confidently pursue plain packaging measures without fear of falling foul of the WTO.

What next?

Australia’s plain packaging law was groundbreaking at the time. But now the tobacco industry has responded with a range of tactics to exploit loopholes and offset the impact on their brands, meaning governments need to come up with yet more countermeasures.

Once plain packaging was implemented, the tobacco industry quickly trademarked new brand names, such as Imperial Tobacco’s Peter Stuyvesant + Loosie, which contains 21 cigarettes instead of 20, and advertises the bonus cigarette within the name.

Canada’s plain packaging laws, enacted in February 2020, directly control the size and shape of the cigarettes themselves. For example, the law bans slim cigarettes targeted at young women who associate smoking with slimness and fashion.

Widespread plain packaging could also help curb the uprise in tobacco marketing via social media influencers. A tobacco pack covered in gruesome disease imagery doesn’t make for inspiring social media content.

The WTO upheld Australia’s plain packaging laws because the government had convincing public health research to show the positive impact of plain packaging on public attitudes to smoking.

Seen in that light, the decision isn’t just a win for public health. It’s also an encouraging sign that evidence-based policies can defeat even the deepest of corporate pockets.

Written by Becky Freeman. Melania Trump looks chic in tailored suit

Melania Trump is no stranger to being criticised for her fashion choices. She’s caused a stir for wearing heels while visiting storm-ravaged Texas, she’s been laughed at for her oversized pink dress at a UN luncheon and, most recently, mocked for her outfit on a visit to hurricane-devastated Puerto Rico. But her latest is being talked about for all the right reasons.

Welcoming Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie, the First Lady opted for an menswear-inspired grey pinstripe suit with an undone black tie, and we think it’s one of her best looks yet.

She’s certainly challenging the stereotypical First Lady look, and it looks like it might be paying off! We’re definitely getting some Annie Hall vibes from this outfit.

Do you like her new look? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

How to pack a suit in a carry bag without ruining it

Want to arrive with your suit still looking dry cleaner fresh? It’s not impossible.

1. Skip the garment bag. It used to be an inflight mainstay, but fashion experts now say that it’s more convenient – and better for your suit – to fold it carefully and keep it in your carry on bag.

2. Fold the suit jacket in half so that the lining is on the outside. It should look inside out, but don’t pull the arms through.

3. Fold it in half horizontally, so the jacket becomes almost a square shape. To prevent hard creases, you can put a soft jumper or tshirt inside the horizontal fold of the jacket.

4. Next, hold the suit pants up from the bottom hems and find their natural break. Lay them down flat along their natural crease, with on leg of the pants on top of the other.

5. Lay the suit jacket in the middle of the pants. Fold up the top and bottom of the pants, wrapping the jacket inside the folds.

6. For protection, you can wrap the whole bundle in the dry cleaning plastic or a very thin plastic bag.

7. For your matching dress shirt, button it up the whole way, fold in half vertically with the sleeves tucked inside and then roll up from the bottom. Ties and belts should also be rolled. Store these softer items around the suit for cushioning.

8. When you arrive, unpack the suit straight away and hang it up. You can request an iron or steamer from the front desk if you want to give it a little refresh. Alternatively, hang the suit in the bathroom when you have a hot shower – the steam will work wonders.

Baby grand pianos for entertaining. Spiral staircases for a dramatic entrance. Saunas and steam rooms.

You might be surprised to learn that those are some of the luxury features available in today’s cruise ship suites. Cruise lines are offering upscale travellers outstanding (and spacious) accommodations with elements and perks sure to delight.

Here are seven of the most exceptional cruise ship suites at sea.

To see images of the suites, scroll through the gallery above.

1. Regent Suite on board Seven Seas Explorer, Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Debuting this summer, the sleekly modern décor of the Regent Suite hints at timeless Art Deco glamor. In its palatial 2,917 square feet, you’ll find a living room with a sitting area, dining space for six, bar area, two bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms (with marble and stone details). Its wraparound balcony, at 958 square feet, is the size of most master cabins. The suite also offers two separate balconies.

One of the suite’s show-stopping elements is the Vista Garden, a glass-enclosed sitting area. The private outdoor area boasts 270-degree views over the ship’s bow. Back inside, make a little music on the custom-made Steinway grand piano. Or lie in bed in the master bedroom and watch the sea sweep by through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

2. Owner’s Suite on board Silver Spirit, Silversea Cruises

This suite features 1,292 square feet of luxurious space. It also features an English butler to cater to your every whim.

Sit on your private teak veranda and observe the scenery through ship-provided binoculars. Help yourself to an espresso from your Illy machine. Relax by listening to tunes on your Bang & Olufsen audio system or soaking in your jetted tub. You’ll sleep well in your bed with Pratesi linens and down duvet covers.

3. Crystal Penthouse with Veranda on board Crystal Serenity, Crystal Cruises

The luxury is in the details in the 1,217-square-foot Crystal Penthouse. Modern Swarovski crystal sconces and handmade Italian tiles decorate its lobby. Distinctive artwork gives the suite its own personality. Impressive media offerings include a large Bose Video Wave III flat screen TV and surround sound audio system.

After a day ashore, enjoy yourself in the media room (which doubles as a second bedroom with its full-size sleeper sofa). Or work out in the private exercise area.

A butler is at your beck and call 24 hours a day. They’ll arrive through the pantry with its service entrance. Expect both afternoon tea and pre-dinner cocktails and canapes served to you in the comfort of your suite. Perhaps you’ll enjoy them on the 128-square-foot veranda? For a pick-me-up, brew a specialty coffee with the in-suite cappuccino maker.

4. Reflection Suite on board Celebrity Reflection, Celebrity Cruises

The high ceilings add to the spaciousness you’ll experience in this suite’s 1,636 square feet. Its panoramic corner location and floor-to-ceiling windows provide splendid views.

It’s perfect for entertaining new or old friends. Seat 10 guests around the grand dining table. Or lounge on the veranda. It offers a whirlpool tub and soothing rain shower in its 193 square feet.

Experience European-style butler service 24/7. Butlers can help with unpacking, in-suite dining, afternoon tea and evening hors d’oeuvres. And they’ll also bring espressos and cappuccinos whenever you like.

The suite features two bedrooms and bathrooms. You’ll rest like a baby on a mattress with a ground-breaking sleep system. An iPad acts as a remote control to adjust the bed’s elevation and massage features. It also controls the lights and TV.

5. Royal Loft Suite on board Oasis, Allure and Harmony of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International

This 1,524-square-foot suite will delight upscale travellers once it debuts this spring. There’s also a baby grand piano, wet bar and library area.

A Royal Genie personal assistant is available around the clock. Be sure to take advantage of the en suite handcrafted cocktail service.

6. Owner’s Suite on board Rivera and Marina, Oceania Cruises

The 2,000 square feet of this suite stretch out over the entire width of the ship. The sophisticated décor is from designer Ralph Lauren’s home collection. That includes everything from furniture and fabrics to lighting and bedding.

The suite features luxury amenities including round-the-clock butler service, indoor and outdoor whirlpool tubs (the latter with a flat-screen TV), a private fitness room and even cashmere lap blankets for keeping warm while enjoying the veranda.

7.
