Controversy after former officer who tasered Clare Nowland learns his fate

<p>Kristian James Samuel White, the now-former police officer who fatally tasered 95-year-old Clare Nowland, has avoided a prison sentence. A judge described the act as a "terrible mistake" but ruled it fell at the lower end of seriousness for manslaughter cases.</p> <p>White, 35, left the NSW Supreme Court on Friday under strict conditions, including a two-year community corrections order requiring good behaviour and an order to complete 425 hours of community service. The sentencing follows the tragic events of May 17, 2023, when White fired a Taser at Nowland at the Yallambee Lodge aged-care home in Cooma, NSW.</p> <p>Justice Ian Harrison acknowledged the unlawful and dangerous nature of White's actions, stating he had misread or misunderstood the situation. “A frail and confused 95-year-old woman in fact posed nothing that could reasonably be described as a threat of any substance,” he said.</p> <p>Nowland, who suffered from dementia, was holding a knife while using a walking frame and had ignored staff attempts to disarm her. White, after only a few minutes at the scene, discharged his Taser, reportedly saying, "nah, bugger it," before the weapon’s barbs struck her chest. The force of the Taser caused her to fall and suffer a brain bleed, leading to her death in hospital a week later.</p> <p>Justice Harrison recognised the grief and anger of Nowland’s family, stating, “The complete and utter frustration and despair exhibited by her family in the circumstances is easy to understand when things could have so easily been handled better.”</p> <p>While White’s actions were deemed unlawful, the judge noted that he had been called to the aged-care home lawfully and had been required to resolve the situation. “He could not have chosen to do nothing,” Justice Harrison said.</p> <p>During sentencing, White stood expressionless, while members of Nowland’s family were visibly emotional. In a letter to the family submitted to the court, White expressed deep remorse, writing, “I take full responsibility for my actions – I felt and still feel horrible for what happened. I do not expect you to take my apology as a request for forgiveness and I understand that you suffer greatly.”</p> <p>Since the incident, White has been diagnosed with major depressive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Due to public outrage in Cooma, he will be forced to relocate.</p> <p>White was dismissed from the NSW Police Force in December following his guilty verdict. "She did not die with dignity": Clare Nowland's family share emotional statements

<p>The distraught family of Clare Nowland, who was fatally tasered by a police officer in 2023, have broken down as they shared the devastating impact her death has had on them.</p> <p>In November last year, Senior Constable Kristian James Samuel White, 34, was <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/finance/legal/cop-who-fatally-tasered-grandmother-learns-fate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">found guilty</a> of manslaughter after he discharged his stun gun at the 95-year-old grandmother in a treatment room at Yallambee Lodge aged-care home in the southern NSW town of Cooma during the early hours of May 17th 2023.</p> <p>After remaining suspended with pay throughout the trial, White was removed from the NSW Police Force days after the verdict was handed down, and is challenging the decision. </p> <p>White faced the NSW Supreme Court on Friday for a sentencing hearing ahead of the determination of his fate and the future of his career. </p> <p>Ms Nowland’s eldest son Michael Nowland shared a heartbreaking victim impact statement stating he is still in a state of disbelief following his mother’s tragic death. </p> <p>“When I was told mum had been tasered by a police officer… I went into a state of shock and asked the question ‘who in their right mind could do this to a frail 95-year-old lady?” he said.</p> <p>“No one in the (hospital) room could answer this question.How could a human being, let alone a police officer, perform such an inappropriate and inhumane act on a frail old lady who weighed just 45kg?”</p> <p>Mr Nowland said the more he learned about the incident the more “confused” he felt, as he said, “I will never forgive this officer for tasering and killing my mum."</p> <p>“Mum did not deserve to have her life end in this manner... she was a caring and dignified lady, but she did not die with dignity.”</p> <p>Clare Nowland’s daughter Jennifer Nowland said her mother’s death has had a devastating impact on their entire family, including her young grandkids. </p> <p>She said, “Her three-year-old granddaughter is asking why nanna Clare’s face is on the TV, and if nanna Clare will still get Christmas presents now that she if dead.”</p> <p>Clare’s other daughter Gemma Murphy glared over at White as she called out his “grotesque” actions and called for justice for all vulnerable Australians. </p> <p>“I struggle to find solace in a world that feels so unjust…but I seek justice not revenge for mum,” she said.</p> <p>“She was so much more than just the grandmother that was tasered, she lived her life with purpose and dedication."</p> <p>“I implore you to reflect on the true cost of this tragedy, my mother’s death should serve as a catalyst for change. "Overflowing with love": Fergie celebrates newest grandchild

<p>Sarah Ferguson has welcomed her fourth grandchild with the arrival of Princess Beatrice's second daughter. </p> <p>The Duchess of York shared a sweet photo of the new baby to Instagram, introducing the tiny tot and sharing her name. </p> <p>"Overflowing with love and joy to be able to welcome Athena Elizabeth Rose into the world," Fergie wrote. </p> <p>"She is already so adored and I'm incredibly blessed to be a Granny once again. So proud of Edo, Beatrice and the rest of my little 5-a-side team!"</p> <p>Proud new dad Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, who took to the sweet snap of the camera-shy bub covering her face in her oversized onesie, commented on the post.</p> <p>"The best Gigi," he wrote, referring to what Fergie's grandkids call her.</p> <p>Edoardo also shared a post of the new baby, saying their family is "already completely besotted with her."</p> <p>He added, "A massive thank you from my wife and I goes out to all the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their exceptional care and support during this incredibly special time."</p> <p>Beatrice and Edoardo welcomed their first child, Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, on September 18th 2021, who is now three. Fergie opens up about double cancer diagnosis

<p>Sarah Ferguson has opened up about the mental toll of her double cancer diagnosis, admitting that her "mind went to some dark places".</p> <p>The Duchess of York was diagnosed with breast cancer and skin cancer in the same year, telling <a href="https://www.thetimes.com/uk/society/article/christmas-appeal-sarah-ferguson-cancer-diagnosis-interview-kt86hm7nq" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>The Times</em></a> how much her health battle impacted her life. </p> <p>"It was hard. I'm generally a positive person but cancer is like a bomb going off in your life," the 65-year-old told the publication.</p> <p>"One diagnosis is enough to deal with, but I had two in the space of a year. I don't mind admitting that my mind went to some dark places, reflecting on my own mortality."</p> <p>"My family have been an immense support to me through this period," she told the outlet.</p> <p> </p> <p>"I've used meditation and mindfulness to help stay positive and balanced."</p> <p>The royal was recently in Australia for her book tour, where she spoke to <a href="https://honey.nine.com.au/royals/sarah-ferguson-duchess-of-york-breast-skin-cancer-mental-health-admission/232791d3-c991-40fc-99d5-8f9bc5f60a33" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>9honey</em></a> about how she copes with the struggles in her life while also balancing her health. </p> <p>"For anyone thinking, 'Oh, you sound alright Sarah', or Fergie or Ginger or Duchy or whatever you call me, it's because I also do the work," the Duchess of York told <em>9honey</em>.</p> <p>"And I do it with really studying the spiritual side of life and my own darkness. "Just leave Christmas": Barnaby Joyce fires up over gender-neutral cookies

<p>Some stories are big: wars, elections, pandemics. Others are tiny – crispy, vaguely human-shaped and destined for dunking in tea.</p> <p>The humble Gingerbread Man – or rather, its gender-neutral successor, the Gingerbread Person – has sent shockwaves through Parliament House and left a trail of crumbs all the way to the nearest bakery.</p> <p>The biscuit's modern makeover has Barnaby Joyce and Nationals Senator Matt Canavan crying "Save Christmas!" faster than you can say, "Not my gumdrop buttons!"</p> <p>While many of us would struggle to find outrage over baked goods – especially baked goods with no opinion on pronouns – Joyce sees a far darker picture. For him, this is political correctness gone so far off the rails it could inspire an army of ginger-fuelled Trump supporters.</p> <p>“It’s just like, all this stuff has been forced on me, just leave it,” he declared, presumably staring down a gender-neutral cookie in his local parliamentary cafeteria. “Just leave Christmas. If you don’t want to buy Gingerbread men, you don’t have to.” Then, proving politicians aren’t immune to comedic flair, he added: “Can I have one for me and one for it on table 3?”</p> <p>Meanwhile, Senator Canavan was equally distraught at the development, lamenting the apparent death of whimsy. “Please tell me they haven’t done this to the muffin man as well?” he begged, as if imagining a bleak future where fairytale characters are stripped of gender and fun.</p> <p>If you thought Parliament was alone in this existential ginger-crisis, think again. Supermarket giant Woolworths has already abandoned the “man” for a more inclusive “Gingerbread People”, and even <em>Women’s Weekly</em>, that wholesome bastion of baking, has shared a recipe for the modern, genderless cookie.</p> <p>It was Woolworths' decision that drew particular ire from a radio caller named Harry, who tattled to Melbourne’s 3AW like a child narking on a sibling. “Woolies has decided to start selling – under their own brand – non-binary Gingerbread people,” he reported solemnly.</p> <p>This news rocked radio host Tom Elliott, who lamented that none of the gingerbread figures “resemble women”. (For clarity’s sake, it’s worth noting that Gingerbread Men have never been renowned for their realistic depiction of human anatomy.)</p> <p>Online, the social media masses weighed in with their usual measured, level-headed takes. One user proclaimed they were “too busy caring about my electricity bill doubling” to give a crumb about cookies. Another’s sarcastic sympathy dripped from the screen: “If you can’t handle a biscuit with ‘man’ in the name, simply grab a box of tissues and retreat to your safe space.”</p> <p>And in the darkest corner of the internet, one person’s exasperation boiled over: “Jesus Christ. It’s a biscuit vaguely shaped like a human. Do we need to make a biscuit gender neutral so we don’t offend people?”</p> <p>Let’s face it: the Gingerbread Man is not, and has never been, the hill anyone expected society to die on. It doesn’t vote, drive or go to Centrelink. It’s a biscuit. Yet, here we are, watching as Barnaby Joyce and Matt Canavan rise like knights to defend a sugary snack from the insidious forces of progress.</p> <p>Does the average person truly care if their Gingerbread Man identifies as a Gingerbread Person? Is anyone truly shaking with rage while browsing the supermarket biscuit aisle? Or are most of us too busy, well, eating them?</p> <p>In the end, we must ask ourselves the hard questions: Will the Muffin Man survive the purge? Is Santa’s reindeer team next? And most importantly: if they’re still delicious, does it even matter?</p> <p>For now, the only certainty is that political correctness has officially reached the snack table. Somewhere, a batch of gender-neutral gingerbread people is cooling, blissfully unaware that their mere existence has triggered a full-scale political bake-off.</p> <p>And so, in the spirit of the festive season – let’s agree to eat the biscuit and leave the outrage for another day.</p> <p><em>Images: Supplied</em></p>

Taser victim's family break silence following verdict

<p>Clare Nowland's daughter, Kerrie Paske, has broken her silence for the first time in 18 months since her 95-year-old mum died after she was tasered by a police officer. </p> <p>On Wednesday, after Senior Constable Kristian White was found <a href="https://o60.me/6lspig" target="_blank" rel="noopener">guilty of the manslaughter</a> of her mother, Kerrie finally opened up about her grief.</p> <p>"What happened to mum shouldn't have happened. She didn't deserve it," she told <em>A Current Affair</em>. </p> <p>Kerrie broke down in tears outside the NSW Supreme Court after the jury handed down its verdict, </p> <p>She recalled the final conversation she had with her mother shortly after the incident. </p> <p>"Right at the end I just told her how much I loved her and thanked her for a beautiful life," she told<em> A Current Affair</em>.</p> <p>"Pretty quickly after that she went."</p> <p>Kerrie is one of Nowland's eight children, and said that the jury's verdict was "good news" for all of them. </p> <p>"We all think we got the best mum, she was a good mum. She was a tough lady," she added. </p> <p>"She didn't deserve that, she really didn't." </p> <p>While Nowland's family maintained their silence since her death, Kerrie revealed that they were worried their mother's memory would be tarnished because she was holding a knife during the confrontation with police. </p> <p>"At the very start of all this court case they were painting a real picture of Mum being a really vicious sort of a lady - or that's how I felt," Kerrie recalled. </p> <p>"That worried me a little bit but she's just not like that."</p> <p>"It's all very well mentioning this knife but she used to get fixated on things. It used to be pens," she explained.</p> <p>"When we first heard (of the confrontation), I thought 'I bet she thought she had a pen in her hand', but she didn't."</p> <p>Nowland is survived by her eight children, 24 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, with many of them coming from Cooma to sit in the public gallery throughout the trial. </p> <p>Following the guilty verdict, Senior Constable White's employment is "under review", as he was previously suspended with pay throughout the proceedings. </p> <p>"The officer's employment is currently under review. I expect to consider that matter next week," NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb told reporters on Wednesday afternoon. </p> <p>"The death of Clare Nowland is a terrible tragedy and my deepest condolences go to the Nowland family,' Commissioner Webb added.</p> <p>"This should never have happened."</p> <p><em>Images: A Current Affair</em></p>

Cop who fatally tasered grandmother learns fate

<p>A jury has found a police officer guilty of manslaughter after he fatally tasered a grandmother in a care home. </p> <p>Senior Constable Kristian James Samuel White, 34, discharged his stun gun at 95-year-old Clare Nowland in a treatment room at Yallambee Lodge aged-care home in the southern NSW town of Cooma during the early hours of May 17th 2023.</p> <p>In video footage played at his NSW Supreme Court trial, he was heard saying “nah, bugger it” before shooting the great-grandmother, who was holding a knife, in the torso. </p> <p>Nowland fell and hit her head, and died in hospital a week later. </p> <p>During the trial, the jurors heard eight days of evidence and submissions in the trial, including from the nursing staff, paramedics and White’s police supervisor who were there at the time he fired.</p> <p>After deliberating for 20 hours, a 12-person jury returned with a guilty verdict of manslaughter on Wednesday in the NSW Supreme Court.</p> <p>The offence of manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison in New South Wales. </p> <p>The Crown has applied for White to be taken in custody ahead of sentencing, with the application to be determined on Thursday.</p> <p>The family of Clare Nowland issued a statement through their lawyer Sam Tierney, which read, “The Nowland family were present in court today when Kristian White was convicted of the manslaughter of their beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Clare.”</p> <p>“The family will take some time to come to terms with the jury’s confirmation that Clare’s death at the hands of a serving NSW police officer was a criminal and unjustified act. Court views footage of final moments before Clare Nowland was tasered

<p>A registered nurse with nearly 50 years of experience has expressed her deep concern regarding the tasering of 95-year-old Clare Nowland, a resident at Yallambee Lodge nursing home in Cooma, New South Wales.</p> <p>The incident occurred in the early hours of May 17, 2023, and <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/news/news/clare-nowland-dies-officer-charged" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resulted in Nowland's death</a>, a great-grandmother suffering from dementia.</p> <p>Senior Constable Kristian James Samuel White, 34, is currently on trial in the NSW Supreme Court facing manslaughter charges related to the incident. He has pleaded not guilty, asserting that he acted lawfully under his duties as a police officer.</p> <p>During her testimony, Nurse Rosaline Baker recounted her alarm when she called triple-0 after Nowland had grabbed two steak knives and a jug of prunes from the kitchen. Following her call for help, White and Acting Sergeant Rachel Pank arrived on the scene after two paramedics. Together with Baker, they located Nowland in a treatment room. When White pulled out his taser, Baker admitted she was unfamiliar with the device and felt "kind of curious". However, her curiosity turned to horror when she heard a loud noise and witnessed Nowland being struck by the stun gun. "I was very, very concerned when she was falling to the ground," Baker stated in court.</p> <p>The trial has revealed troubling details about Nowland's condition and behaviour leading up to that fateful night. Expert testimony indicated that her behaviour had escalated over the three months prior to her death. She exhibited increasingly anti-social behaviour, such as taking food from other residents, attempting to undress in public areas, and refusing assistance from staff. CCTV footage presented during the trial showed Nowland physically lashing out at staff members and even getting stuck in a tree, as well as footage showing the final moments of Nowland's life as she hid from emergency service staff – including Senior Constable White.</p> <p>Nowland had been admitted to the hospital on April 16 and prescribed the anti-psychotic drug Risperdal to manage her aggressive behaviour after incidents involving punching and biting staff. Under questioning by defence barrister Troy Edwards SC, an expert acknowledged that Nowland's behaviour just before she was tasered could have been influenced by a recent reduction in her medication dosage.</p> <p>The trial continues.</p> <p><em>Images: 7 News</em></p>

"I miss her daily": Fergie opens up on friendship with Diana

Buckingham Palace announces joyous royal baby news

<p>In a delightful announcement, Britain’s Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are expecting their second child, due in early spring of next year, or our autumn. Buckingham Palace confirmed the joyous news, stating, “His Majesty The King has been informed and both families are delighted with the news.”</p> <p>This exciting chapter comes after Beatrice, 36, and property developer Mapelli Mozzi tied the knot in a charming private ceremony at the Royal Chapel of All Saints, Windsor, in July 2020. The couple welcomed their first child, Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, on September 18, 2021, who is now three. Fergie's touching tribute to late mum who died in "cruel accident"

<p>Sarah Ferguson has reflected on her mother's death 26 years on. </p> <p>The Duchess of York took to Instagram to share the emotional tribute to her mother, Susan Barrantes, who died "far too young" in a car crash almost three decades ago. </p> <p>"My much-loved mother Susie died 26 years ago today," she began. </p> <p>The royal shared a series of photos of her mother, including one of them on the iconic Buckingham Palace balcony, after Fergie married Prince Andrew in 1986. </p> <p>She also posted framed photos she kept of her mother as well as professional photos that were taken when she was younger. </p> <p>"She was far too young to be taken from us and I often reflect on the fact that at just 61, she was younger than I am now when she died in a cruel accident," Ferguson continued.</p> <p>"I think constantly of her zest for life and her shining spirit. "Never been seen before": Fergie reveals new details from 9/11 near miss

<p>Sarah Ferguson, affectionately known as Fergie, has taken to Instagram overnight to share new details of her 9/11 near miss. </p> <p>24 years on, the Duchess of York, who has previously revealed that she was meant to be in the World Trade Centre's North Tower when the plane struck the building, has shared more details of the day.</p> <p>Fergie recalled how her friend, billionaire businessman Howard Lutnick, gave her an office on the 101st floor of the World Trade Centre at the time, for her charity Chances for Children. </p> <p>The charity's logo had a mascot called Little Red, which was eventually made into a doll for a child named PJ who survived the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombings.</p> <p>On the day of the 9/11 attacks Fergie was due to attend a meeting in the office, but was running late because of an earlier engagement, so she was still on route to the building when the terrorists struck. </p> <p>"I was driving in the car and I was late for work... and Little Red was found in the rubble," she said in the video. </p> <p>Fergie opened a box to reveal her own Little Red doll that survived the attacks. While she has previously talked about the doll, this is the first time she revealed what it looked like. </p> <p>"A fireman picked her up, carried her out, like the fireman that picked up PJ all those years ago in the Oklahoma City Bombing," she continued. </p> <p>"And CNN filmed it and said, 'Look, a child's doll.' And Larry King said, 'That's no child's doll. "Fresh chapter": Channel 7 reveals new star line-up

<p>Channel 7 has revealed yet another shake-up in its news presenter lineup, following months of significant reshuffles and the departures of several high-profile television personalities from the network.</p> <p>On Sunday, the network announced what it described as a "fresh chapter" for its 7News Sydney team, with veteran broadcasters Angela Cox and Mark Ferguson appointed as co-anchors for the flagship 6pm bulletin.</p> <p>Cox, who has served as a weekend news co-presenter for the past four years, temporarily filled in for Ferguson while he was on leave during the Olympics. This period of transition occurred amid a series of changes initiated by Seven's news and current affairs director, Anthony De Ceglie.</p> <p>The timing of Ferguson's leave had sparked speculation about his future at the network, particularly against the backdrop of reported cost-cutting measures due to a significant drop in ad revenue. However, the latest announcement puts those rumours to rest, affirming Ferguson's continued role at the helm of 7News Sydney.</p> <p>Cox, who has spent two decades with Channel 7, including a notable seven-year tenure as a foreign correspondent in the US, expressed her excitement about the new role. Former Qantas CEO to have bonuses slashed

<p>Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce is set to have his bonuses slashed by $9 million. </p> <p>The decision comes after the airline pledged to implement all 23 recommendations made in its review of key governance matters, which were revealed in an update on 2023 financial year executive remuneration.</p> <p>Joyce, who left his role as the Qantas CEO in September 2023, will have his last annual salary with the airline cut by $9.26m, leaving him with $1.8 million. </p> <p>His hefty bonuses were withheld amid mounting pressure from investors following a string of controversies, including the illegal sacking of 1,700 workers, the selling of tickets on already cancelled flights and allegations of anti-competitive behaviour.</p> <p>Qantas released a statement on Thursday saying Mr Joyce's whopping salary led to a number of mistakes that lead to “considerable harm” across multiple areas of the company. </p> <p>“The events that damaged Qantas and its reputation and caused considerable harm to relationships with customers, employees and other stakeholders were due to a number of factors,” the statement read.</p> <p>Following a settlement with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the airline admitted to “misleading customers in relation to flight cancellations processes” and with the approval of the Federal Court, will pay a $100m penalty on top of also agreeing to a $20m customer remediation program.</p> <p>Incoming Qantas chairman John Mullen said it was important that the board learns from previous mistakes. </p> <p>“It’s important that the board understands what went wrong and learns from the mistakes of the past as it’s clear that we let Australians down,” he said. </p> <p>“As the national carrier it is our duty to make sure we always act in the best interest of stakeholders and hold ourselves to the highest level of accountability.”</p> <p><em>Image credits: Getty Images </em></p>

<p>Princess Eugenie has shared a lengthy tribute to her mother Sarah Ferguson for believing her pain as a child that led to her scoliosis diagnosis. </p> <p>The royal shared a sweet photo from her childhood, showing her in a school uniform with her mother by her side. </p> <p>The emotional post came on the heels of international scoliosis awareness day, as she thanked the Duchess of York for taking her disability seriously when she was young. </p> <p>"My mum caught my scoliosis early and I was lucky enough to get the help I needed at 12 years old," the post said.</p> <p>"I thank her so much for that and also thank her for the confidence to be proud of my scar. <p dir="ltr">Sarah Ferguson has revealed the heartfelt advice she received from Queen Elizabeth before she died.</p> <p dir="ltr">In an interview with <a href="https://www.hellomagazine.com/royalty/555582/sarah-ferguson-feeling-better-than-ever-exclusive-interview/"><em>Hello</em>!</a> magazine, the Duchess of York has opened up about her battle with cancer, and how a piece of advice she received from the late Queen helped her through her health journey. </p> <p dir="ltr">Speaking about how her outlook on life has changed after her diagnosis, Fergie reflected on what her ex-mother-in-law said to her before she passed away. </p> <p dir="ltr">"One of the only people who saw me properly was the Queen [the late Elizabeth II]," she told the publication. "And before she died, she said: 'Sarah, being yourself is enough'."</p> <p dir="ltr">The Duchess of York still carries that advice with her to this day, explaining that she's raised her daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, to be honest in who they are.</p> <p dir="ltr">Fergie has previously opened up about her relationship with the late Queen, sharing how her words of wisdom have impacted her for years. </p> <p dir="ltr">In September 2023, she shared that the last thing the Queen ever said to her was to “just be yourself”. </p> <p dir="ltr">"And she saw it. "Family unity is key": Sarah Ferguson gives cancer update

<p>Sarah Ferguson has shared an update on her cancer journey during her appearance at the Cannes Film Festival. </p> <p>The Duchess of York was diagnosed with <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/caring/fergie-reveals-second-cancer-diagnosis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">skin cancer</a> in January, not long after getting a mastectomy for her breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in June 2023. </p> <p>When asked about her health, the royal told <em>People</em>: "This evening I am doing very well. I think that we've managed to get cancer in the right place rather than cancer ruling me. I've put cancer in the corner." </p> <p>Speaking on the amfAR Gala red carpet, the 64-year-old added that it was important to be aware and get checked for both breast cancer and melanoma. </p> <p>“I think you always have to be aware. I think it’s great to get checked for breast cancer [and] melanoma. I think you just have to be very candid about it," she told the publication. </p> <p>“I think a lot of people get very frightened to talk about these things. I’m very happy with my mastectomy and my breasts and just to talk about it.”</p> <p>Her diagnosis coincided with both her brother-in-law King Charles, and Princess Catherine's cancer diagnoses, although both of them have not disclosed what types of cancer they have. </p> <p>She praised the royal family for their "unity" during these difficult times and how she has been able to offer support to Charles and Catherine. </p> <p>"I think family unity is key… I think the key to life is that we all support each other," she said. </p> <p>"And also forgiveness is a great thing. I think forgiveness of yourself, and forgiveness of others." </p> <p>Earlier this month, the duchess' eldest daughter Princess Beatrice spoke about her mother's health in her debut TV interview on <em>This Morning</em>. </p> <p>"She’s such a phenomenal icon. As a mum she’s been amazing," she said, adding that despite going through so much in the last year, she felt inspired by her mum's resilience and sense of purpose. </p> <p>“She’s doing really well. She had a bumpy health scare last year but she’s all clear now. But I think at 64, she’s thriving.
