Thomas Markle slams Meghan and Harry’s memorial absence

Thomas Markle has hit out at his daughter, Meghan, and son-in-law Prince Harry, for their “unforgivable” absence from Prince Philip’s memorial service.

Mr Markle - who has never met Prince Harry or seen his daughter since before her 2018 wedding - said their decision not to fly to the UK to attend the service was “a slap in the face for the Queen”.

“Attending and giving respect and giving God’s grace to Prince Philip for a lifetime of service was very important to the Queen, and for them not to show up was a slap in the face to the Queen,” he fumed in a video posted to his YouTube channel.

“It was unforgivable. The British people won’t forgive them for that, and they shouldn’t.

“I don’t know what the reason was, but there’s no excuse at all. It’s a slap in the face for the Queen and the British people.”

His remarks come as Prince Harry takes legal action against the Home Office for no longer providing him with armed police protection or allowing him to pay for that himself, according to the NZ Herald.

The lack of police protection was cited as the reason Harry didn’t join the rest of his family at the service celebrating Philip’s life last week.

Image: Channel 5

Thomas Markle Jr pens apology letter to sister Meghan

Thomas Markle Jr opened up about his relationship with estranged half-sister Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, on Big Brother VIP on Monday night, with the support of fellow housemate and former Survivor favourite Luke Toki.

On Monday night’s episode, Toki, who’s been developing a friendship with Markle, was called into the diary room and asked to read the infamous letter Markle wrote to Prince Harry. In the letter, Markle urged Harry to reconsider his marriage, and called the pair’s marriage “the biggest mistake in royal wedding history”.

Toki was asked for his thoughts on the letter, and he was incredibly supportive of his newfound friend, saying, “He’s so upset, he’s seen his sister being given so many opportunities. Some people like to climb the corporate ladder and not look back. I understand - there are two sides to every tale.

“But from everything I know - I like Tom, and I think he loves his sister. As brothers and sisters we give each other s**t and we fight and get back together. At the end of the day family is family.

“Tom really wants to reconnect with his sister - he loves his sister,” Toki said while tearing up and adding, “I’m actually getting quite emotional over this - sorry.” Asked by Big Brother if this struck a chord with him, Toki replied, “A little bit… A little bit… I haven’t spoken to my sister for the last two or three years, I just started speaking to her again.

"Family is family and deep down the love is always going to be there, it doesn’t matter what happens.”

Toki was then asked to convince Markle to write an apology to Meghan, which Markle agreed to do. Asked what it was like growing up with Meghan, Markle said, “It was fun. There was a whole lot of love growing up. Her first nickname as a child was ‘flower' because her bedroom she had these decorative flowers over her crib, so when she woke up that’s the first thing she would see.”

“She’s my sister and she’s my blood and I love the hell out of her.”

After taking some time to write the letter, Markle read it aloud. He had written, ”Dear Meghan and Harry, the first thing I want to say to you two is that I’m sorry from the bottom of my heart for the awful, mean letter I wrote to you prior to your wedding.

“I want both of you to know that it didn’t come from the real person I am, but came from the very dark, hurt part of my heart. I am not a mean person at all and I have more love inside me to give than anyone I know.

“The letter was definitely written from my feeling hurt and confused from your response that I was ‘distant family’ and that you ‘didn’t know those people’. I was hurt and confused because of the amazing bond and relationship we shared growing up together, and all I could do was put up a defensive wall to protect my heart.

“I know that the letter was immature and wrong and I truly regret it. When your relationship with Harry first became known to the public, I - along with all of our family - became public figures overnight - no more privacy.

“Let me tell you, It was very, very stressful to deal with it all alone with no help at all. A real nightmare and constant pressure, and I if I could turn back the clock and do it all over knowing what I know now. I would never have tried to communicate any of my feeling to the media. I feel like a complete ass after what I’ve done and I am truly sorry for that.

“Meg, if I could turn the clock back, I would tell you that I'm so, so proud of you and I'm truly happy for you and Harry and I love you. You’re my little sister, my family, and you always will be. Now you’ve found the love of your life and started a family of your own, I couldn’t be more proud.

“The last several years of my life I have grown and learned more about myself, and I must say what I did to you with that letter is quite possibly the biggest mistake of my life. I hope you and Harry can find it in your hearts to accept my sincere apology because this is the real Tom Markle. I truly love you guys. I wish you, Harry and Meghan, and Archie and Lili the happiest most loving life possible. Sincerely, your big brother, Tom.”

Following the exercise, Markle said it felt like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders, and that he felt indebted to Big Brother, who confirmed he would be sending the letter to the couple.

“I’ve grown exponentially since my stay here,” Markle added.

Image: Gilbert Carrasquillo/Getty Images

Thomas Markle Jr spills secrets on Big Brother

Appearing on Big Brother VIP in the UK, Thomas Markle Jr has begun to share intimate details about his half-sister Meghan.

He claims that since marrying into the Royal Family in 2018, Meghan treats her family as if “she’s embarrassed of where she comes from”.

Thomas said he was once close to his sister, but the last time he saw her was at their grandmother’s funeral in 2011.

“She took off after that anyway and went to Canada... What happened to her? Nobody can figure it out,” Thomas said of his half-sister.

“Money changed her I guess. Money and fame just went to her head really bad.”

Thomas also went on to discuss Meghan’s first marriage to American film producer Trevor Engelson, who she was married to between 2011 and 2013.

According to their divorice papers, the pair split due to “irreconcilable differences”, as Trevor described the way Meghan handled the divorce as “cold”.

“The thing that gets to me is the guy that she was married to the first time, Trevor. This guy just took care of her like, man she was adored by him and she just walked all over him and dumped him, that fast... after being married,” Thomas told his fellow Big Brother housemates.

“Sent the ring back in the mail. "Showed no concern": Thomas Markle slams Meghan in court

Meghan Markle's father Thomas Markle has slammed his royal daughter in court, claiming that a private letter Meghan sent him "signalled the end of our relationship".

The letter, which was written in 2018, is at the centre of a highly-followed court battle with the former Duchess of Sussex suing Associated Newspapers for breaching her privacy by publishing the letter.

Associated Newspapers is the publisher of Mail on Sunday, which is where the letter was first made public.

Thomas said that he felt like he had no choice to make parts of the letter public after reading an article written by People magazine with quotes from Meghan's friends.

One of the quotes in the article read: “After the wedding she wrote him a letter. She’s like, ‘Dad, I’m so heartbroken. I love you. I have one father. Please stop victimising me through the media so we can repair our relationship.’”

Thomas claims that this comment is a "total lie" and the letter wasn't an attempt to save their relationship but was a "criticism" instead.

“(The People quote) suggested to people that Meg had reached out to me with the letter, saying in the letter that she loved me and that she wanted to repair our relationship.

“That suggestion was false. The letter was not an attempt at a reconciliation. It was a criticism of me.

“The letter didn’t say she loved me. It did not even ask how I was. It showed no concern about the fact I had suffered a heart attack and asked no questions about my health.

“It actually signalled the end of our relationship, not a reconciliation.”

Thomas then spoke about how the People article hurt him and his reputation in the statement.

“(It) vilified me by making out that I was dishonest, exploitative, publicity-seeking, uncaring and cold-hearted, leaving a loyal and dutiful daughter devastated”.

He also said that he didn't release the whole letter "because I thought the letter as a whole made Meg look terrible", according to his statement.

Lawyers for the Duchess of Sussex said that the publication of the “intrinsically private, personal and sensitive” letter was a “triple-barrelled invasion of her privacy rights”.

“It (the letter) is a heartfelt plea from an anguished daughter to her father (the word ‘pain’ or ‘painful’ appears no fewer than five times), begging him to stop talking to the press.”

Anthony White QC, who is representing Associated Newspapers, has argued that Meghan penned the letter “to defend her against charges of being an uncaring or unloving daughter” and must have known “that her father might choose to disclose it”.

Meghan's lawyers have applied for a summary judgement to be handed down, which means that the case could be resolved without going to trial.

However, if the case goes ahead, both Thomas and Meghan could take to the stand as witnesses.

Queen Elizabeth II has knighted Captain Sir Thomas Moore in an effort to recognise his valiant fundraising efforts and boosting the spirits of Britain during the coronavirus pandemic.

Moore, 100, raised 33 million pounds ($59.2 million) for the National Health Service (NHS) in April by pledging to walk 100 laps of his backyard in celebration of his 100th birthday.

He captured the hearts of the world with his hard work and caught the attention of the Queen, who knighted him in one of her first official outings since the coronavirus pandemic began.

Moore stood in front of the Queen, holding onto a wheeled walking frame.

"I have been overwhelmed by the many honours I have received over the past weeks, but there is simply nothing that can compare to this,'' he tweeted after the ceremony.

"I am overwhelmed with pride and joy."

Moore was so excited about the Knighthood that he broke protocol by revealing the private conversation he had with the Queen herself.

"She did mention I'm 100, and I said to her, 'Well, you've a long way to go yet,' so she's alright," he said.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Royal Family (@theroyalfamily) on Jul 17, 2020 at 8:31am PDT

Queen Elizabeth II has been sheltering at Windsor Castle since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in March.

Sir Tom's knighthood was one of the first official duties that the Queen has carried out since the pandemic began.

Thomas Markle could be called on to testify against Meghan

Estranged father Thomas Markle could be called on to testify at the high court against his daughter Meghan as part of her ongoing legal action against the Mail on Sunday.

Reports have emerged suggesting that the paper’s defence is reliant on Thomas’ account.

The Duchess of Sussex is currently suing the newspaper for breach of copyright, invasion of privacy and misuse of personal data after it published excerpts from a letter that she sent to Thomas about how he was treating her.

Mail on Sunday filed its 44-page long defence at the high court on Tuesday arguing that the Duchess and other royals rely on publicity about themselves and their lives to maintain the privileged positions they hold”. It also argues that Meghan could not “have a reasonable expectation of privacy that the contents of the letter were private and would remain so”.

“There is a huge and legitimate public interest in the royal family and the activities, conduct and standards of behavior of its members,” the filing said. “This extends not merely to their public conduct, but to their personal and family relationships because those are integral to the proper functioning of the monarchy.”

The paper is targeting all of Meghan’s claims, including where she says that she had not courted publicity for her relationship with her father. The paper has countered this saying that Meghan hasn’t denied authorising her friends to speak about the relationship for an article with US magazine People.

Mail on Sunday has dismissed the copyright claim by arguing that the letter was not an original literary work while also saying that Meghan and her team “briefed” the media against Thomas to obtain favourable coverage.

"The privacy allegation, which is being made by Meghan in this particular case, is that there was also an invasion of her privacy by the revelation of this letter and the information about their personal relationship," media lawyer Mark Stephens told the BBC.

"Effectively, Thomas Markle and therefore the Mail on Sunday's defence is that because it is alleged Meghan and her team were out briefing against Thomas Markle — he had a right of reply, he had a right to defend himself, he had a right to put the record straight and it's much less clear that she wins that cleanly or at all".

The legal proceedings are being funded by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex privately and any proceeds will be donated to an anti-bullying charity.

“The letter didn't seem loving”: Duchess Meghan’s father Thomas Markle speaks out

The Duchess of Sussex’s father, Thomas Markle said he did not intend to share a letter his daughter wrote to him, but did so because he felt “pressured”.

The 75-year-old’s decision to release the note has landed him straight in the centre of a legal battle between both Prince Harry and his wife, and the Mail on Sunday.

However, while he did not have any intention to release the contents of his daughter’s heartfelt letter, he said he wanted to defend himself after it was first mentioned publicly in the American magazine, People.

"I decided to release parts of the letter because of the article from Meghan's friends in People magazine. I have to defend myself,” he said.

"I only released parts of the letter because other parts were so painful. The letter didn't seem loving to me. I found it hurtful.

"There was no loving message in there, nothing asking about my health, nothing from her saying, 'Let's get together and heal our differences'."

People quoted a “friend” of the Duchess, who chose to remain unnamed, who said the royal felt that her father did not understand her desire for privacy.

Mr Markle had suggested the two should pose together for a press photo.

However, the retired lighting director argued he did not want a picture “for any other reason” than to be left alone.

"I don't want a picture for any other reason than if we show harmony then the press will back off,” he said.

"When I opened the letter I was hoping it was the olive branch I'd longed for.

"I was expecting something that would be a pathway to reconciliation. Thomas Cook bosses’ took home more than $36 million despite the company being in debt

As hundreds of thousands of tourists are stranded across the country, there have been furious calls for the top earners of travel firm Thomas Cook to hand back their multimillion dollar bonuses.

In the past five years alone, 12 of the company’s top earners took home a shocking $36 million despite the company facing debts of $2.9 billion when it collapsed. This is according to the UK’s The Telegraph.

Chief executive officer Peter Fankhauser took home $15.23 million since he took on the job in 2014, whereas chief financial officers Michael Healy and Bill Scott earned a combined $12.84 million since 2014.

The UK’s opposition Labour Party finance spokesman John McDonnell has said that the executives should repay their bonuses.

“I think they need to really examine their own consciences about how they’ve brought this about and how they themselves have exploited the situation,” he said on BBC radio.

The company was one of the world’s oldest and largest travel operators and fell into compulsory liquidation after it was unable to secure the $368 million demanded by lenders.

Mr McDonnell also attacked the British Government for not doing more to help out the company.

“I’m worried for the holiday-makers. I really feel for them. But also 13,000 people will lose their jobs over this and I just think the government should have been willing to do more intervene, stabilise the situation, then allow a longer term plan to develop,” he said.

“This company once was in public ownership and as a result of privatisation it’s had real problems over the years I think because of issues around management and the lack of long-term planning.”

However, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said it would be a “moral hazard” to save the company.

The liquidation has left more than 21,000 people out of work and stranded more than 600,000 holiday goers overseas.

In Tunisia, things took a turn for the worse as tourists were locked inside a hotel by security guards.

“Do not come to Les Orangers hotel (in) Hamamet, Tunisia, as we’re all being held hostage because Thomas Cook haven’t paid for our stays!” she said.

“Everyone’s being charged nearly 3000 pounds to leave. The security gates are locked and no-one can leave nor can any coaches get in to take people out.”

A spokesman for Thomas Cook later said the issue had been resolved and guests allowed to leave.

"We are aware that a small number of customers were asked to pay for their hotel room before leaving Les Orangers in Tunisia … this has now been resolved and customers flew home as planned. We continue to support our customers in all our resorts," they said.

“I’m seeing someone else”: Dame Edna claims she's dating Thomas Markle

Dame Edna is a classic Australian icon, and it’s safe to say that this title does not come without controversy.

As Dame Edna is promoting her new tour, she’s announced to the press that she’s got a new man in her life.

“I’ve had many years of widowhood, but I’m seeing someone else,” Dame Edna said, before dropping clues about her new lover.

“An older man. He’s not well known. He was in the limelight because of his daughter’s marriage. He lives in America. He sometimes lives in Mexico. His name is Thomas Markle,” she said, as the room erupted in laughter.

Although they’re getting “very, very close”, nothing serious has happened yet.

“He is the father of little Meghan and he’s such a lovely man,” she continued. “We’re getting very, very close. We haven’t committed acts of immodesty yet.”

After doing some quick math, Dame Edna realised that she would be in line to the throne if her and Tommy tied the knot.

“Do you realise that if I do tie the knot with Tommy, I will be 17th in line for the throne,” she said.

“So he suggested we go down to his local jeweller and have our heads measured for crowns, just in case. Queen Edna and King Thomas, it sounds good, doesn’t it?”

This isn’t the first time that Dame Edna has had a brush with the royal family, as she recently posted a video on her Instagram page of her with Prince Charles and Camilla at the Royal Variety Show.

View this post on Instagram

Me with Prince Charles and Camilla at the Royal Variety Show. Revealed: Details of Princess Charlotte’s first day of big school

Princess Charlotte is gearing up to start “big school” next week and we are sure she could not be more excited.

However, there will be a few key differences from Prince George’s, 6, big day in 2017 to little Charlotte’s.

When the four-year-old’s big brother first started at Thomas;s Battersea, he walked in with his hand wrapped around his dad’s, Prince William.

At the time, Duchess Kate was sick with hyperemesis gravidarum while in the early stages of her pregnancy with 16-month-old Prince Louis. At this stage though, it has been announced Princess Charlotte will be dropped off by her mum as well for her very first stay.

Kensington Palace shared the exciting new details of the little royal’s big day, including that both the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be there to comfort their only daughter’s first day jitters.

"Princess Charlotte, accompanied by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George, will attend her first day of school at Thomas's Battersea on Thursday 5th September," they said in a statement.

It was noted only one photographer and one camera person would be permitted to capture snaps of the royal’s big day, just as it was allowed for Prince George.

Reports suggest we may get a few portraits of the royal in a happy, cheeky mood - unlike her brother was on her first day as she is “so excited” to follow in his footsteps.

"She can't wait to be with George at big school," a royal insider told People Magazine.

"They are close in age, and they spend so much time together."

Princess Charlotte started Willcocks nursery School in January 2018.

Scroll through the gallery above to see Princess Charlotte over the last four years.

Thomas Markle blasts the Queen for snubbing him: “She has no excuse not to meet me”

Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan’s relationship captivated the attention of the world, her father has managed to get himself in a muddle with reporters on multiple occasions.

Now, Thomas Markle has told US celebrity website TMZ that he is offended he has not had a private audience with the Queen before President Trump.

The 73-year-old also claimed that he has received the silent treatment from the royal family since doing a paid tell-all interview with British talk show Good Morning Britain last week.

“If the Queen is willing to meet our arrogant and insensitive President she has no excuse not to meet me, I’m nowhere near as bad,” he said.

During the interview, Thomas said he thinks the Queen has put him in the “penalty box” after his last interview, in which he talked about Harry and Meghan’s future children.

The Queen is set to meet Mr Trump during his trip to the United Kingdom next month.

Thomas has still not met Meghan’s new husband, Prince Harry, as he did not attend their wedding because of heart problems and controversy surrounding a staged paparazzi shoot.

During his interview with TMZ, Thomas said he was planning to travel to the UK to visit his royal daughter and meet Harry.

His latest comments are sure to increase tension between Meghan’s extended family and the royals.

During the TV interview last week, he also said his daughter would benefit the royal family.

“The royals are very complicated, but she can always rise to that occasion. My daughter is capable of anything and she will be a compliment to the royal family.”

He also claimed that Prince Harry was “open” to Brexit and had told him to give Trump a chance, despite the royal family not being allowed to be political in public.

“All Harry actually did was say because Trump was new, he said: ‘Give him a chance.’”

A royal commentator and a biographer of Prince Harry, Angela Levin, said those claims would have particularly upset the royal family.

“I think the Queen will be very angry. She is absolutely the model of the stiff upper lip and not saying anything that is too political.”

Prior to the royal wedding, Meghan’s mum, Doria Ragland, met the Queen for afternoon tea.

What Thomas Markle told Prince Harry when he asked to marry Meghan

Thomas Markle has given his first interview since missing the royal wedding, revealing the word of warning he gave Prince Harry when the royal asked permission to marry his daughter.

Speaking on Monday’s Good Morning Britain, Mr Markle revealed he told Harry: “I said to him, ‘You’re a gentleman, promise me you’ll never raise your hand against my daughter’ and I gave my permission.”

He said: “Meghan told me first and then a few times after that Harry got on the phone with Meghan, they got on the phone together, and Harry asked for her hand on the phone.

The 73-year-old told hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid he “wished” he had been the one to walk Meghan into St George’s Chapel, and confessed he cried as he watched Prince Charles do the honours.

The former lighting director, who lives in Mexico, was forced to pull out of the royal wedding last minute to go for a heart operation.

The Duchess of Sussex’s dad said: “The unfortunate thing for me now is I’m a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history rather than the dad walking her down the aisle.”

But added: “I was honoured. I can’t think of a better replacement than someone like Prince Charles.

“It might have been a treat for him as well because he didn’t have a daughter.”

He also shared details of his first chat with his new son-in-law.

“He said ‘Hello, Thomas’ and I said ‘Hi, Harry’ and it became a conversation back and forth mostly about politics he was asking me how I was feeling that day and I said how unhappy I was with the President Donald Trump, and that’s how it began,” Mr Markle said.

“We talked a little about how they met and how happy they were with each other.

“He’s quite easy to talk to, he’s quite a comfortable person to talk to. I wasn’t nervous.

“10,000 miles apart it’s hard to be nervous talking to someone on the phone.”

When asked when he knew Meghan and Harry were serious about their relationship, he said: “I can’t give you a date no, it was certainly a few months before the announcement of the engagement.

“My daughter is very intelligent. She knows how to choose who she wants to be with. She’s a smart girl and she made a good pick.

“The royals are very complicated, but she can always rise to that occasion.

“My daughter is capable of anything and she will be a compliment to the royal family.”

Meghan Markle’s half brother has shed some light on what her family is really like in an interview with Channel 7’s Sunday Night.

Speaking to Melissa Doyle, Thomas Markle Jr said that he would like to one day be an uncle to her children.

When asked about getting an invitation to her wedding, he said: “No. I don’t know. When do they go out? Nobody has my address anyway. I’m pretty hard to get hold of.”

He said however he would like to see her again and hopes she would like him to get to know her future children.

“I think an uncle is a pretty important role,” he said. “I didn’t even know that we had a falling-out, so I would like to see her again, yeah. I want to give her a hug and tell her how proud I am of her, but, you know, I really have to travel a really long way to do that.”

When asked if she was “embarrassed” by her family, Markle Jr said it would be a fair conclusion to make.

“She’s probably embarrassed at some of the stories and accusations and, you know ...” he said, before Doyle asked him if their family was “fractured”.

“I think my family’s always been fractured,” he said.

“I think now, more than ever, it should be the time for everybody to put their differences aside and just, you know, be a family. We have a small family. It may be broken up, but it’s still a family.”

“She can’t forget about her family, because ... we’re never gonna go away. We’re always gonna be her family,” he said.

Markle Jr also spoke about the effect the family fighting would be having on Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle.

“You know, my dad bent over backwards and really, really just paved the way for her and gave her every single thing she needed to get where she’s at today. It would hurt. It wouldn’t irritate me, but it would just hurt,” he said.

When asked by Doyle how their father would be coping with all their dirty laundry being aired publicly, Markle Jr replied: “He’s probably not happy. Well, you see the look on his face in those pictures that they finally got of him. So doesn’t look very happy. And he’s a really private person, so ...”

Markle Jr also said he was not sure if her father would walk Meghan down the aisle, but thought he should do it.

“My dad just wants to be left alone. He doesn’t like spotlight. He doesn’t like anything ... interviews. You know, and that’s why he moved down there, to just be alone. But he’s gotta come out now, though,” he said.

“I mean, he’s gotta step up to the plate... and walk his daughter down that aisle.”
