Three seriously injured in helicopter crash off Vic coast

<p>Three people have survived a serious helicopter crash that took place near Point Lonsdale on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula on Friday morning, according to Victoria Police.</p> <p>Emergency services were called to the scene just after 10:00am, when the helicopter is believed to have crashed into shallow water off Fellows Road, between Point Lonsdale and Ocean Grove. Footage obtained by the Nine News shows the wreckage lying partially submerged on a beach.</p> <p>Police confirmed that all three occupants of the aircraft sustained serious injuries. Two of the individuals – a man and a woman – were airlifted to Royal Melbourne Hospital, while a third man was transported by road to Geelong University Hospital.</p> <p>“The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined at this stage,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said, adding that the identities of the victims are still to be formally confirmed.</p> <p>Ambulance Victoria said paramedics responded swiftly and worked in coordination with other emergency services to stabilise and transport the injured. Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) reported that its firefighters arrived within two minutes of receiving the call and found the helicopter 30 to 50 metres offshore.</p> <p>FRV personnel, alongside Surf Life Saving teams and paramedics, helped safely bring the three occupants ashore.</p> <p>The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has launched an investigation and is currently gathering information to determine the cause of the crash.</p> <p>Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to contact Crime Stoppers or the ATSB.</p> <p><em>Images: Nine News</em></p>

5 mistakes people make setting financial goals

<p>In discussions around money and goal setting, people talk a lot about financial freedom. What does that mean to you, though? We might redefine money as ‘a unit of choice’, because the more money you make, the more choices you have. Everyone’s aspirations are different, which is one reason why there’s no one-size-fits- all approach to wealth.</p> <p>It’s time to begin to understand what financial freedom means to you, because how on earth are you going to get there, if you don’t know where <em>there</em> is? How will you craft a strategic wealth-building plan when you don’t know what your target is? How will you know if you are making the right decisions in the right areas, decisions that are intentionally and systematically advancing you towards your outcomes. Here are some of the big mistakes I see people make when setting financial goals.</p> <h2>Mistake #1: They have none!</h2> <p>Without a goal, how will you know what to steer towards? You are left just ‘hoping’ that one day things will work out. With no clear direction to head towards, any actions you take are more or less random. You’re often left sitting idle and going nowhere fast, just swept along by whatever current comes your way.</p> <h2>Mistake #2: They make them too big</h2> <p>This might seem counterintuitive, especially since the typical conversation about personal development emphasises aiming for big, ambitious goals. And while these can be valuable, helping to elevate your thinking and giving you something inspiring to work towards, the problem arises when they are your only focus. Without smaller, achievable milestones to serve as stepping stones, the gap between where you are now and your ultimate goal can feel overwhelming. This can make it hard for your subconscious mind to fully commit, leading to procrastination or self-sabotage due to fear of not knowing how to get there. </p> <h2>Mistake #3: They make them too small</h2> <p>While small goals may seem manageable, they can lack the power to ignite your motivation or emotional drive or to be the catalyst that pulls you towards something greater than who and where you are in life right now. Small, uninspiring goals can make it easy to remain complacent. Without a purpose or vision that stretches you, there’s no real incentive to pursue them with passion. They don’t create the emotional connection that’s essential for driving sustained effort and overcoming obstacles. As a result, you may never fully commit to these goals, and they end up being more like tasks to check off a list than meaningful milestones on your path to success.</p> <h2>Mistake #4: They are vague and wishy-washy</h2> <p>When your goals are unclear and lack focus, they are difficult to achieve. Goals like ‘I want to be rich’ of ‘I want more money’ are too broad to provide any real direction. Without concrete details – such as specific numbers, deadlines or actionable steps – you don’t have a clear path to follow. Vague goals make it hard to measure progress or stay motivated, because there’s nothing tangible to work towards. As a result, your efforts can become inconsistent, and it’s easy to lose focus. Without clarity, you can’t point your actions in a specific direction, which makes it unlikely you’ll make any meaningful progress. A well-defined goal, on the other hand, creates a roadmap and keeps you accountable along the way.</p> <h2>Mistake #5: They have no plan to make it real</h2> <p>Setting a clear goal is undeniably important but it’s only part of the process. Just because someone says they want a specific outcome does not mean they will achieve it. Yet many people fixate solely on the goal itself, or they try to manifest wealth and happiness through the ‘law of attraction’ alone.</p> <p>Most people spend 95 per cent of their time focusing on setting the goal and only 5 per cent on the actions needed to achieve it. Do you see the flaw in that approach? Instead, reverse the focus. Spend 5 per cent of your time defining the goal, and 95 per cent of your time working towards making it a reality. This is where having the right system becomes crucial.</p> <p>How do we break free from impotent goal setting and instead craft a set of financial goals that are not only big, beautiful and inspiring, but achievable. By setting targets that are tangible and tactical and are going to set you up to win, you become more than who you are right now.</p> <p>In the end, a goal without a plan is just an idea. A plan without a goal is simply directionless effort. It may keep you busy, but it won’t lead you anywhere meaningful. Both the goal and the plan must work together – one providing the destination, the other offering the roadmap. I always tell my clients they will never out-earn themselves. If you want to level up your results in life, you have to first level up as a person and raise the standards in how you choose to play the game.</p> <p><em>This is an edited extract from Escape the Middle (Wiley $32.95) by Todd Polke. Why you should revisit the classics, even if you were turned off them at school

<div class="theconversation-article-body"><em><a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/johanna-harris-305384">Johanna Harris</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/australian-catholic-university-747">Australian Catholic University</a></em></p> <p>Throughout my school years I had an exuberant, elderly piano teacher, Miss Hazel. She was one of five daughters (like me) and, like many young women of her generation, had never married her sweetheart because he did not return from the war.</p> <p>Her unabashed gusto for life and infectious, positive outlook left an indelible impression upon me. So too did the memorable fact that Miss Hazel read Jane Austen’s <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/84979.Pride_and_Prejudice">Pride and Prejudice</a> from beginning to end once every year.</p> <p>As a younger girl I wondered about the ways Pride and Prejudice could be so important to a woman in her eighties that she would want to read it annually. Was it to do with Austen’s depiction of a family with five daughters, or to relive an endearing love story?</p> <p>Since those years I have seen, more through lived experience than through academic study, just how deeply meaningful the reading of classic books, like Pride and Prejudice, can be.</p> <figure class="align-left zoomable"></figure> <p>I no longer simply read this book for Elizabeth Bennett’s love story, but for the finely crafted replication Austen gives us of human character, with all its flaws. Hers are imaginary yet imaginably real situations, all depicted with humour and a sensitively calibrated dose of sympathy for even the most unlikeable literary figures.</p> <p>The clergyman Mr Collins, Elizabeth’s distant cousin and her rejected suitor, was always repellent for his obsequiousness but I see more readily now his self-serving nature cloaked in altruism. The haughty snobbery of Darcy’s aristocratic aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, hints at a deeper layer of sadness and fragility only rereading can illuminate.</p> <h2>Box-ticking and speed</h2> <p>When we’re at school or university we may read for speed. I remember managing my reading of Ann Radcliffe’s 432-page gothic romance <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/93135.The_Romance_of_the_Forest?from_search=true&amp;from_srp=true&amp;qid=oU6912stkW&amp;rank=1">The Romance of the Forest</a> to work out how many pages per hour I would need to read across a weekend in order to finish the novel before my university tutorial. (It was an ungodly ratio and I don’t recall much of the novel.)</p> <figure class="align-right zoomable"></figure> <p>Or we may read for the tick-box exercise of writing for assessment requirements: accumulating knowledge of a novel’s original metaphors, descriptions that best capture a prescribed theme (“belonging” or “identity”), or of poetry by which we can demonstrate a grasp of innovative metre.</p> <p>But how and why do we reread classic books, when we are not constrained by class plans or prescribed exam themes. And why should we?</p> <h2>‘Like a graft to a tree’</h2> <p>Rebecca Mead’s <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20924311-the-road-to-middlemarch?from_search=true&amp;from_srp=true&amp;qid=Cm2E7fwgeL&amp;rank=1">The Road to Middlemarch</a> offers a compelling exploration of one writer’s five-yearly revisitation of George Eliot’s masterpiece, <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/19089.Middlemarch?from_search=true&amp;from_srp=true&amp;qid=CRcxE3ftkB&amp;rank=1">Middlemarch</a>.</p> <p>Mead first read the novel at school, and Eliot’s subtitle to the novel, “A Study of Provincial Life”, captured precisely what Mead was trying to escape at that time: provinciality.</p> <p>Eliot’s central character, Dorothea Brooke, captivated Mead as an unconventional intellectual heroine yearning for a life of meaning and significance. Mead marked out important moments with a fluorescent pen, such as when the intellectual and spiritual inadequacies of Dorothea’s husband, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Edward-Casaubon">Casaubon</a>, dawn upon her. Mead writes, quoting Eliot:</p> <blockquote> <p>‘Now when she looked steadily at her husband’s failure, still more at his possible consciousness of failure, she seemed to be looking along the one track where duty became tenderness […]’ These seemed like things worth holding on to. The book was reading me, as I was reading it.</p> </blockquote> <figure class="align-left zoomable"></figure> <p>This idea of books “reading us” can sound like an odd animism. But books can prompt us to reflect on our own lives, too. Eliot makes Middlemarch almost compulsory to reread later in life: the idealism of youth captures the young reader, while the novel’s humour becomes more sympathetic as we age. To reread a novel like Middlemarch is to trace the ways we too have experienced idealism turn to illusion, or have seen the restless pursuit of change turn to a retrospective gratitude and a recognition of grace.</p> <p>Our ability to acknowledge new depths of meaning in our own lives and to recognise within ourselves a subtler sympathy for the lives of others can be articulated almost as precisely as lived experience itself. As Mead says, “There are books that grow with the reader as the reader grows, like a graft to a tree.”</p> <h2>Feeling for Lear</h2> <p>The same can be said of Shakespeare. As young readers, we won’t necessarily capture the full vision <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12938.King_Lear?from_search=true&amp;from_srp=true&amp;qid=nowKY1f5aB&amp;rank=1">King Lear</a> offers us of the tragicomic paradoxes sometimes presented by old age. The play depicts the loss of power and control over one’s life and decision-making, the tender fragility of family relationships when the care of aged parents is suddenly an urgent question and the madness that can prevail when an inheritance is at stake.</p> <figure class="align-right zoomable"></figure> <p>Some of these things might abstractly be understood when taught to us in the classroom, but they are far more powerfully seen when revisited after we have lived a little more of that imaginably real life ourselves.</p> <p>As students we might have squirmed with discomfort at the literal blinding of Lear’s loyal subject the Earl of Gloucester (the horror of witnessing a visceral, grotesque injury).</p> <p>But as we age it is the tragedy of moral blindness that lingers, making the final scene so extraordinarily moving: “Do you see this? Look on her. Look, her lips. Look there, look there,” Lear pleads, as if to say that Cordelia, lifeless in his arms, still breathes.</p> <p>Does he really see her lips quiver? Does he really believe she lives? Is this some consolation with which he dies or is it delusion? Lear’s heart is broken. So is mine.</p> <p>Each time I revisit this final scene, the grief of Lear as a father is profoundly felt, but my heart is broken even more so by his continuing blindness; his vision (what he thinks he sees) is desperate, untrue, and ultimately meaningless.</p> <h2>Sites of discovery</h2> <p>When we read we inhabit imaginary worlds and each time the reading can be different. Philip Davis, a professor of literature and psychology <a href="https://global.oup.com/academic/product/reading-and-the-reader-9780199683185?cc=au&amp;lang=en&amp;">has written</a>,</p> <blockquote> <p>Rereading is important in checking and refreshing that sense of meaning, as the reader goes back and re-enters the precise language once again.</p> </blockquote> <p>Davis points to an idea advanced by the novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch, of the reader’s collection of special, memorable fragments, which serve as metaphors for the reader’s self-utterances, developed over time. These are “nascent sites for thinking and re-centring”.</p> <p>This is a similar idea to the novelist and journalist Italo Calvino’s description in <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9814.Why_Read_the_Classics_?from_search=true&amp;from_srp=true&amp;qid=RALd1Dx5a9&amp;rank=1">Why Read the Classics?</a> of the way classic books “imprint themselves on our imagination as unforgettable” and “hide in the layers of memory disguised as the individual’s or the collective unconscious.”</p> <p>Works of imaginative literature are not manuals for life, though they might along the way gift us with some wisdom; they are sites of discovery and rediscovery.</p> <p>The classic works we are introduced to at school may establish such sites for thinking about ourselves and others, but it is in rereading them as we grow older that we can better see the ways we have grown as imaginative, moral beings.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Search for missing fisherman called off

<p>Police have suspended their search for fisherman Paul Barning who fell overboard his boat during a fishing competition in New South Wales. </p> <p>The 58-year-old was competing in the Game Fishing Association state tournament off the Port Stephens coast on Sunday, when he fell overboard while trying to reel in   large mako shark. </p> <p>Barning was helping his crew when became entangled in fishing wire and was dragged into the water as the shark darted back into the ocean.</p> <p>After a major three-day search, NSW Police have called off the search on Tuesday morning, with his family saying they “have no words” to describe how they are feeling. </p> <p>“Despite the efforts of searchers, the man has not yet been located and the search was suspended at 5pm today and will not resume (on Wednesday),” NSW Police said.</p> <p>The fisherman's wife, Leonie told <em>7News</em> that the family have mixed emotions after the search was suspended, but are extremely grateful to everyone involved. </p> <p>“We just want to send out a huge thank you to everyone involved in the search and rescue, we were informed every step of the way,” she said.</p> <p>“And a huge thank you to the whole fishing community. We have been overwhelmed with kindness from everyone.</p> <p>“Our family meant everything to Paul, he would never hesitate to do the same for anyone else.”</p> <p>It is understood the fisherman was not wearing a life jacket when he went overboard. </p> <p>Barning, a father-of-three, was an experienced game fisherman and the secretary and past president of the Port Hacking Game Fishing Club.</p> <p>A <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-barning-family" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GoFundMe </a>has since been launched by NSW Game and Fishing Association president Steve Lamond, to assist Barning's family during this difficult time, with over $148,000 raised. </p> <p>“We are raising funds to assist the family through this tragic time so they can focus on processing their grief," the fundraiser read. </p> <p>“Anything you could give to assist will be greatly appreciated.”</p> <p><em>Image: NSW Marine Rescue/ Facebook</em></p>

"A miracle": Man walks away from horror crash

<p>A man has walked away with only minor injuries after surviving a horrific crash in Sydney's north. </p> <p>The horrific scene unfolded when the man's car was crushed after he collided with a truck on the Spit Bridge in Manly on Monday morning. </p> <p>The man in his 40s was cut out of the wreckage by firefighters, with NSW Ambulance confirming that he was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital after sustaining minor injuries to his back and neck.</p> <p>Many people were stunned after seeing images of the mangled vehicle, wondering how the driver managed to walk away relatively unscathed. </p> <p>“How good are those first responders to get him out alive. Bloody heroes every single one of them,” one person said, while another added, “That is a miracle.”</p> <p>“So glad he is OK! He should buy a lotto ticket, thank you to the amazing first responses you do an amazing job,” another said.</p> <p>Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Andrew Dewberry told <a href="https://manlyobserver.com.au/spit-bridge-closed-after-car-crushed/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>The Manly Observer</em></a> that the car was "completely crushed and mangled" and it was a "miracle" he survived. </p> <p>Two of three outbound lanes were closed on the bridge for about an hour as emergency crews worked to free the person from the vehicle and clear the scene.</p> <p>Many commuters were stuck in the heavy traffic delays, with dozens of people fleeing standstill buses and trekking along the highway to escape the chaos. </p> <p><em>Image credits: The Manly Observer </em></p> <p><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, HelveticaNeue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> </span></p>

Gogglebox star set to return for 21st season

<p><em>Gogglebox Australi</em>a is set to return for its 21st season this week, and while the beloved Silbery family are no longer a part of the cast, a familiar face is set to return for the new season. </p> <p>While fans will surely miss seeing the multi-generational family on their screens, Sarah Marie Fahd will once again return to Aussie screens after being on maternity leave for the past two years. </p> <p>“I’m so excited to be back,” she told <em>Yahoo Lifestyle</em>. </p> <p>Sarah joined the show in 2017 with her husband Matty and their best friend Jad Nehmetallah. </p> <p>“Being able to join my boys again makes me feel so happy because the last few seasons I've been on the sidelines and Matt would be like, ‘Remember, you're not on the show right now!’. There are so many things I wish I could have said!” she added.</p> <p>Sarah explained that she took a break from the show because her second child, Lyon, required more attention than her firstborn Malik. </p> <p>“There’s no way I would have been able to even sit and watch TV with Lyon. There were days where he would cry unless I carried him and I would just have him strapped to my chest, so I was like, it's not gonna work with this one,”  she told the publication. </p> <p>“But he's at a different age now and he's such a character.</p> <p>“Also just mentally, I'm in a much better place. I think mental health is really, really difficult when you've got little ones and hormones and stuff to juggle, so that was also a really big factor and I just mentally couldn't do all of that.</p> <p>"Whereas right now, I’m myself again. I feel like it just ticked over to 2025 and something in me was like, I’m good now. I’m finally in a better place.”</p> <p>The upcoming season will see both Malik and Lyon sitting on the couch alongside their parents, a decision that was made after careful consideration. </p> <p>"It’s just a lovely show to be on, so I was able to trust [producers] with having Malik on the show. Nine pulls reality TV series off the air over "staging" claims

<p>Channel Nine's real estate reality show <em>Find My Beach House</em> has been  pulled off air after producers were caught out "staging" scenes for the cameras.</p> <p>The show hosted by <em>The Block's </em>Shelley Craft, focuses on couples hunting to buy their "dream home".</p> <p>However, according to Media Watch, one couple featured on the show already owned the property that was showcased on a recent episode. </p> <p>According to the Media Watch report, couple Toneya and Lochie had owned the luxury pad for eight years.</p> <p>"In fact, days after the show was broadcast, Toneya and Lochie put the house on the market – asking price $3.8 to $4.15 million. Should you use your retirement savings to pay off debt? Three things to keep in mind

South Africa is the most recent. In 2024 it <a href="https://theconversation.com/south-africa-has-changed-its-retirement-rules-to-help-boost-country-savings-how-it-will-work-233287">introduced changes</a> that allow access to some retirement savings while ensuring that most of the money is still preserved for later.</p> <p>Other countries that have changed the rules to allow members to dip into their savings before retirement include Australia, Chile, India and Portugal. Changes were introduced to ease the financial strain caused by COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. People across the world are grappling with debt and the cost of living.</p> <p><a href="https://www.treasury.gov.za/comm_media/press/2024/2024%20Two-pot%20System%20Updated%20%20FAQ%20August%202024.pdf">Policymakers</a> have considered this an avenue that offers financially distressed fund members the flexibility to access their retirement funds while still supporting long-term retirement savings. Retirement funds are also often the only sizeable savings that fund members have.</p> <p>A recent report by South Africa’s <a href="https://www.discovery.co.za/portal/business/top-reasons-for-two-pot-withdrawal-requests">Discovery Corporate and Employee Benefits</a>, which represents 3,000 employers that provide pension and provident funds for just over one million employees, found that people aged between 35 and 45 made the most claims to access the savings component of their retirement.</p> <p>When asked what they used the funds for, 24% of members said their withdrawals were for financing home or car expenses. Another 21% of members were using their funds to pay off short-term debt. The majority of members who withdrew their retirement savings were low-income earners (earning up to R125,000 or US$7,000 a year). On the other hand, withdrawals were lowest among high-income earners (earning more than R1 million or US$56,000 a year).</p> <p>This data provides evidence that most low- to middle-income South African consumers are grappling with the trade-off between preserving their capital for retirement and meeting their monthly financial obligations.</p> <p>Given that everyone’s financial situation, goals and needs are different, it’s always best to speak to a financial advisor to assess whether using your retirement savings to pay off debt will be a sound move. But, as academics who have focused on financial planning, we offer three pointers to consider:</p> <ul> <li> <p>understand what you owe, to whom, and what it’s costing you</p> </li> <li> <p>plan beyond paying off debt</p> </li> <li> <p>weigh the pros and cons carefully.</p> </li> </ul> <h2>Know which debt to settle first</h2> <p>Debt with a high interest rate often takes longer to repay, because at the start of the loan repayment period, most of the repayments are going towards interest payments – not reducing the capital amount. If you use your retirement proceeds towards this, it could shorten the period that it would take to settle the loan and reduce the interest repayments, which are compounded according to the outstanding loan balance.</p> <p>Short-term loans, such as those with a repayment term of up to 18 months, tend to have higher interest rates. Unsecured debt, which is debt that is not tied to an asset, also attracts high interest rates because they have little to no collateral requirements. Collateral provides the lender with a guarantee of compensation in the event of default. When there is no collateral, the cost of debt becomes more expensive. Using your retirement proceeds towards settling these short-term loans can free up cash that can be used towards settling other debt and will improve your credit score.</p> <h2>Understanding borrowing behaviour</h2> <p>Using your retirement savings to settle debt should be a priority if you have a plan in place to ensure that your overall financial position will improve. Once the debt is cleared, consider how you can use your free cash in your favour. This could mean boosting your savings or acquiring assets and investments.</p> <p>But if retirement savings are being used to pay off debt while you accumulate more debt, this indicates on ongoing cycle of debt. For example, paying off the minimum amount due on a loan but also consuming the balance that becomes available on the same loan is a sign of poor borrowing behaviour. A more extreme example is taking on more debt to service existing debt.</p> <p>Without a change in borrowing behaviour, using your retirement savings to pay off debt will leave you worse off. You will have missed out on the opportunity to grow your retirement savings and you will have got into more debt.</p> <h2>Debt repayments vs retirement returns</h2> <p>When considering withdrawing from your retirement savings to pay down debt, it’s also important remember this will be at the expense of building your retirement nest egg. For instance, if a 35-year-old were to draw down R30,000 from their retirement fund, that same amount could have grown their retirement capital by over R200,000 by the time they reached 55 years old (assuming an investment return of 10%).</p> <p>Withdrawing your retirement savings on a frequent basis could also mean you may need to work longer and past your intended retirement age to compensate for the withdrawals. Or you may need to find ways to supplement your retirement savings through other investments, or consider reducing your standard of living at retirement.</p> <h2>Is this a sound move?</h2> <p>Remember, withdrawal from retirement savings is subject to tax.</p> <p>While retirement may seem far off when there are more pressing financial needs, using your savings to pay down debt has its advantages and drawbacks. Since withdrawals are being used to pay for expenses and service debt, it’s also important to reflect on borrowing behaviours that may need to be corrected. Otherwise, using retirement savings could become a financial crutch that could make your retirement income less secure.</p> <p>Settling debt using your retirement savings should be done after careful consideration and planning. How we diagnose and define obesity is set to change – here’s why, and what it means for treatment

Brown</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/monash-university-1065">Monash University</a></em></p> <p>Obesity is <a href="https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/weight-management/adult-overweight-obesity/health-risks#:%7E:text=Having%20overweight%20or%20obesity%20increases,the%20cells%20in%20your%20body">linked to</a> many common diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver disease and knee osteoarthritis.</p> <p>Obesity is currently defined using a person’s body mass index, or BMI. This is <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/obesity-and-overweight">calculated</a> as weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of height (in metres). In people of European descent, the BMI for obesity is 30 kg/m² and over.</p> <p>But the risk to health and wellbeing is not determined by weight – and therefore BMI – alone. We’ve been part of a global collaboration that has spent the past two years discussing how this should change. Today we publish how we think obesity should be defined and why.</p> <p>As we outline in <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/commissions/clinical-obesity">The Lancet</a>, having a larger body shouldn’t mean you’re diagnosed with “clinical obesity”. Such a diagnosis should depend on the level and location of body fat – and whether there are associated health problems.</p> <h2>What’s wrong with BMI?</h2> <p>The risk of ill health depends on the relative percentage of fat, bone and muscle making up a person’s body weight, as well as where the fat is distributed.</p> <p>Athletes with a relatively high muscle mass, for example, may have a higher BMI. Even when that athlete has a BMI over 30 kg/m², their higher weight is due to excess muscle rather than excess fatty tissue.</p> <p>People who carry their excess fatty tissue <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/health/2017-09-06/waist-size-why-it-matters-and-when-its-a-risk/8839708">around their waist</a> are at greatest risk of the health problems associated with obesity.</p> <p>Fat stored deep in the abdomen and around the internal organs can release damaging molecules into the blood. These can then <a href="https://theconversation.com/body-fat-deep-below-the-surface-is-a-toxic-risk-especially-for-your-heart-146307">cause problems</a> in other parts of the body.</p> <p>But BMI alone does not tell us whether a person has health problems related to excess body fat. People with excess body fat don’t always have a BMI over 30, meaning they are not investigated for health problems associated with excess body fat. This might occur in a very tall person or in someone who tends to store body fat in the abdomen but who is of a “healthy” weight.</p> <p>On the other hand, others who aren’t athletes but have excess fat may have a high BMI but no associated health problems.</p> <p>BMI is therefore an imperfect tool to help us diagnose obesity.</p> <h2>What is the new definition?</h2> <p>The goal of the <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36878238">Lancet Diabetes &amp; Endocrinology Commission on the Definition and Diagnosis of Clinical Obesity </a> was to develop an approach to this definition and diagnosis. The commission, established in 2022 and led from King’s College London, has brought together 56 experts on aspects of obesity, including people with lived experience.</p> <p>The commission’s <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/commissions/clinical-obesity">definition and new diagnostic criteria</a> shifts the focus from BMI alone. It incorporates other measurements, such as waist circumference, to confirm an excess or unhealthy distribution of body fat.</p> <p>We define two categories of obesity based on objective signs and symptoms of poor health due to excess body fat.</p> <p><strong>1. Clinical obesity</strong></p> <p>A person with clinical obesity has signs and symptoms of ongoing organ dysfunction and/or difficulty with day-to-day activities of daily living (such as bathing, going to the toilet or dressing).</p> <p>There are 18 diagnostic criteria for clinical obesity in adults and 13 in children and adolescents. These include:</p> <ul> <li> <p>breathlessness caused by the effect of obesity on the lungs</p> </li> <li> <p>obesity-induced heart failure</p> </li> <li> <p>raised blood pressure</p> </li> <li> <p>fatty liver disease</p> </li> <li> <p>abnormalities in bones and joints that limit movement in children.</p> </li> </ul> <p><strong>2. Pre-clinical obesity</strong></p> <p>A person with pre-clinical obesity has high levels of body fat that are not causing any illness.</p> <p>People with pre-clinical obesity do not have any evidence of reduced tissue or organ function due to obesity and can complete day-to-day activities unhindered.</p> <p>However, people with pre-clinical obesity are generally at higher risk of developing diseases such as heart disease, some cancers and type 2 diabetes.</p> <h2>What does this mean for obesity treatment?</h2> <p>Clinical obesity is a disease requiring access to effective health care.</p> <p>For those with clinical obesity, the focus of health care should be on improving the health problems caused by obesity. People should be offered evidence-based treatment options after discussion with their health-care practitioner.</p> <p><a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(24)01210-8/abstract">Treatment</a> will <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587(22)00047-X/fulltext">include</a> management of obesity-associated complications and may include specific obesity treatment aiming at decreasing fat mass, such as:</p> <ul> <li> <p>support for <a href="https://www.obesityevidencehub.org.au/collections/treatment/behavioural-interventions-for-the-management-of-overweight-and-obesity-in-adults">behaviour change</a> <a href="https://www.obesityevidencehub.org.au/collections/treatment/managing-overweight-and-obesity-in-children-and-adolescents">around</a> diet, physical activity, sleep and screen use</p> </li> <li> <p>obesity-management medications to reduce appetite, lower weight and <a href="https://www.obesityevidencehub.org.au/collections/treatment/medication-and-surgery-for-the-treatment-of-overweight-and-obesity-in-adults">improve health</a> outcomes such as blood glucose (sugar) and blood pressure</p> </li> <li> <p>metabolic <a href="https://theconversation.com/thinking-about-bariatric-surgery-for-weight-loss-heres-what-to-consider-184153">bariatric surgery</a> to treat obesity or reduce weight-related health complications.</p> </li> </ul> <h2>Should pre-clinical obesity be treated?</h2> <p>For those with pre-clinical obesity, health care should be about risk-reduction and prevention of health problems related to obesity.</p> <p>This may require health counselling, including support for health behaviour change, and monitoring over time.</p> <p>Depending on the person’s individual risk – such as a family history of disease, level of body fat and changes over time – they may opt for one of the obesity treatments above.</p> <p>Distinguishing people who don’t have illness from those who already have ongoing illness will enable personalised approaches to obesity prevention, management and treatment with more appropriate and cost-effective allocation of resources.</p> <h2>What happens next?</h2> <p>These new criteria for the diagnosis of clinical obesity will need to be adopted into national and international clinical practice guidelines and a range of obesity strategies.</p> <p>Once adopted, training health professionals and health service managers, and educating the general public, will be vital.</p> <p>Reframing the narrative of obesity may help eradicate misconceptions that contribute to stigma, including making false assumptions about the health status of people in larger bodies. A better understanding of the biology and health effects of obesity should also mean people in larger bodies are not blamed for their condition.</p> <p>People with obesity or who have larger bodies should expect personalised, evidence-based assessments and advice, free of stigma and blame.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Brave pensioner fights off robber using a pair of jeans

One study has even proposed that it be considered <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24812254/">a vital sign</a>, much like heart rate and blood pressure.</p> <p><a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26861693/">Various studies</a> have found a link between low walking speed in adults over 65 and a greater risk of cognitive impairment, cardiovascular disease, falls (which could lead to fractures), hospitalisation, and even an increased overall mortality rate.</p> <p>A higher walking speed, on the other hand, is associated with increased functional capacity, meaning a better ability to move around and do activities independently. It is also linked to <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanhl/article/PIIS2666-7568(24)00092-8/fulltext">greater longevity</a>.</p> <p>But how fast should you walk? <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1568163714000646?dgcid=api_sd_search-api-endpoint">Studies</a> recommend a few simple tests, which principally consist of timing how long it takes a person to walk between two points at their usual pace.</p> <p>This <a href="https://www.physio-pedia.com/4_Metre_Walk_Test">test</a> is done over a distance of four metres. A speed of under 0.8 metres per second is associated with a greater risk of frailty.</p> <h2>How to improve walking speed</h2> <p>While there is slight disagreement as to the best exercise for increasing walking speed, the pattern that seems most effective is <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34409961/">multicomponent training</a>, which includes several different forms of exercise:</p> <ol> <li> <p><strong>Balance exercises</strong> can help improve stability and prevent falls. Examples include walking in a straight line putting one foot in front of the other, or standing on one leg, alternating every 10-15 seconds.</p> </li> <li> <p><strong>Flexibility exercises</strong> can improve mobility and reduce risk of injury. The benefits of movement in alleviating back pain are <a href="https://theconversation.com/back-pain-why-exercise-can-provide-relief-and-how-to-do-it-safely-162888">well documented</a>.</p> </li> <li> <p><strong>Muscular exercises</strong> help build strength in the legs, buttocks and other body areas. These can be as straightforward as standing up and sitting down in a chair.</p> </li> <li> <p><strong>Aerobic exercise</strong> improves stamina, and can include walking itself, or <a href="https://theconversation.com/seven-reasons-nordic-walking-is-better-for-you-than-the-normal-kind-187391">Nordic walking</a> (with hiking poles).</p> </li> </ol> <h2>How much aerobic exercise do we need?</h2> <p>The main <a href="https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789240014886">guides</a> on physical activity recommend that, provided they are physically and medically able, each adult should do at least 150 minutes of moderately intense aeoribic exercise per week.</p> <p>“Moderate” means you are not too out of breath to hold a conversation, but enough to notice an increased heart and breathing rate. There are few reasons not to do this kind of exercise, and it is beneficial for people with chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular issues, metabolic conditions, or even cancer.</p> <h2>Muscle strength: How, and how much?</h2> <p>Strengthening exercises have traditionally been recommended 2 to 3 times a week, with at least one set per exercise session of the main muscle groups: legs, buttocks, pectorals, back and arms.</p> <p>However, more recent studies suggest that doing less intense but more frequent strengthening exercises may be an effective way to <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34822137/">maintain muscle mass and strength</a>. This would mean doing them almost every day, including even small exercise “snacks” throughout the day.</p> <h2>Use it or lose it</h2> <p>If we don’t train them, muscle mass and strength decrease over time. This not only affects our mobility, but also increases the risk of health problems and even death. A little daily exercise can make a big difference. We therefore recommend that you try to maintain your physical condition as much as possible, both to improve your immediate health and prevent future problems.</p> <p>If you do not know where to start, the best option is always to consult a professional. If you have difficulties or limitations in exercising, a physiotherapist can help you to build a specialised exercise plan, or can adapt one to your needs.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Today entertainment reporter signs off for special assignment

<p><em>Today</em> entertainment reporter Renee Bargh has been farewelled by her co-hosts as she prepares to give birth to her baby daughter. </p> <p>The 38-year-old journalist, who welcomed her first child Tide with partner Andrew Lange in 2023, was joined by Karl, Sarah and the entire <em>Today</em> cast on Wednesday morning to commemorate her last day on the show before becoming a mum of two. </p> <p>"I'm going to miss you guys a lot and I love that everyone keeps saying, 'how excited are you going on maternity leave? What cost-of-living crisis? Luxury travel is booming – and set to grow further

<div class="theconversation-article-body"> <p><em><a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/anita-manfreda-1544057">Anita Manfreda</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/torrens-university-australia-899">Torrens University Australia</a></em></p> <p>About ten years ago, while working at Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in the Swiss town of St Moritz, I was shocked to learn a guest once <a href="https://towerrevue.com/life-style/the-party-never-ends/">requested an elephant</a> be brought in to deliver a birthday gift to his wife. And the hotel made it happen, squeezing the elephant into the lobby.</p> <p>This over-the-top gesture symbolised what luxury travel once meant: wealth and power, expressed through grand displays. Think millionaires and billionaires in lavish suites and on private yachts, enjoying <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2211973621001392">exclusive services</a> most of us would never dream of, let alone actually ask for.</p> <p>Consulting group McKinsey defines the luxury traveller as someone prepared to spend <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/travel-logistics-and-infrastructure/our-insights/updating-perceptions-about-todays-luxury-traveler">US$500 or more per night</a> on accommodation. But luxury tourism is evolving. Thanks to demographic shifts, sustainability concerns, and a post-pandemic desire for connection, luxury travel has become more personal and meaningful. And luxury travellers these days aren’t always the super rich elites.</p> <p>Despite the cost-of-living crisis, luxury travel is <a href="https://www.virtuoso.com/getmedia/8c9e8d73-7529-4989-a8c1-cc464d71a9d4/2024-Press-Conference_FINAL-(2).aspx">booming</a>. So, what’s driving this growth and how is luxury travel changing?</p> <h2>A trillion dollar industry</h2> <p>The luxury travel sector has shown remarkable resilience, even during economic downturns and the COVID pandemic. Globally, it is projected to grow from <a href="https://luxonomy.net/report-on-the-countries-contributing-the-most-luxury-tourists-globally-2024-2030/">US$1.4 trillion</a> in 2024 to $2.2 trillion by 2030.</p> <p>The Asia-Pacific region is leading the surge at a compound annual growth rate of <a href="https://www.grandviewresearch.com/industry-analysis/asia-pacific-luxury-travel-market-report">8.6%</a> (a way of measuring growth that assumes profits are reinvested) from 2024 to 2030.</p> <p>In Australia, the trend is similar: the luxury travel market generated US$37.4 billion in 2023 and is forecast to reach <a href="https://www.imarcgroup.com/australia-luxury-travel-market">US$70 billion</a> by 2032.</p> <p>This growth is driven not just by affluence among the wealthy but by younger travellers. As <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/suzannerowankelleher/2024/05/29/new-luxury-traveler-younger-less-affluent/">Forbes magazine</a> points out, these travellers are often non-millionaires who may not earn enormous salaries or even own their own homes – but are willing to pay top dollar for meaningful experiences.</p> <p>And some are splurging on trips to make up for time and opportunities lost due to the pandemic – a trend industry experts sometimes refer to as “revenge” and “<a href="https://latteluxurynews.com/2024/08/19/no-slow-down-in-luxury-experiences-belles/">revelry</a>” travel. As one <a href="https://latteluxurynews.com/2024/08/19/no-slow-down-in-luxury-experiences-belles/">luxury travel industry</a> observer put it:</p> <blockquote> <p>We’re seeing travel at all costs, where people are determined to have the experience they want, regardless of what that price is.</p> </blockquote> <p>Many consumers are <a href="https://www.bain.com/about/media-center/press-releases/2024/global-luxury-spending-to-land-near-1.5-trillion-in-2024-remaining-relatively-flat-as-consumers-prioritize-experiences-over-products-amid-uncertainty">prioritising luxury travel</a> experiences over other discretionary items, including luxury goods.</p> <h2>Luxury can have many meanings</h2> <p>Today’s luxury travel isn’t just about extravagance; it can also include forking out for meaningful experiences. Luxury travellers are willing to pay up for holidays that promise <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/13567667231172995">authenticity, wellness and connection</a> with people and places.</p> <p>It can mean access to something rare, like an uncrowded natural environment or an authentic cultural experience that feels deeply personal.</p> <p>It can also come from <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2211973621001392">expertise</a> – like appreciating the nuances of a rare bottle of wine, or touring a place with an expert or celebrity guide who has been there many times before.</p> <p>Where it was once defined by price and status symbols, luxury travel today is about <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/13567667231172995">stories worth sharing</a> (on social media and in real life) and experiences that align with personal values.</p> <h2>Wellness, adventure and the digital detox</h2> <p>In my 17 years of working in and researching luxury travel, I have seen a lot of different luxury holidaymakers. Everything from humble retirees relishing the rewards of their hard work to VIP celebrities who send 32 pages of requests before even stepping foot in the hotel.</p> <p>While older high-net-worth individuals from North America and Europe remain a significant demographic, a growing proportion of luxury travellers are millennials, Gen Z, and tourists from <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/travel-logistics-and-infrastructure/our-insights/updating-perceptions-about-todays-luxury-traveler#/">emerging markets</a> like Asia and the Middle East.</p> <p>Traditional hallmarks of luxury travel – like presidential suites and private islands – are still popular among high-net-worth individuals.</p> <p>But a growing number of travellers seek cultural experiences, adventure, and <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/travel-logistics-and-infrastructure/our-insights/updating-perceptions-about-todays-luxury-traveler#/">small, intimate group</a> trips.</p> <p>These travellers are opting for <a href="https://www.virtuoso.com/getmedia/8c9e8d73-7529-4989-a8c1-cc464d71a9d4/2024-Press-Conference_FINAL-(2).aspx">off-peak seasons</a> and less-visited destinations to avoid crowds, and may be more vocal about sustainable tourism.</p> <p>The future of luxury travel lies in its ability to adapt to evolving consumer values. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/18/travel/luxury-travel-wellness.html">Wellness</a> retreats, <a href="https://www.cntraveler.com/story/luxury-train-travel-is-entering-another-golden-age">slow</a> travel (including by train), and <a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/content/dam/Deloitte/global/Documents/gx-the-future-of-luxury-travel-2-the-sustainability-imperative.pdf">sustainability-focused</a> experiences are becoming central to the luxury travel narrative.</p> <p>In a hyper-connected world, luxury travel marketing is now often linked with the idea of a <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/sandramacgregor/2024/08/05/peace-and-quiet-11-luxury-global-resorts-for-a-true-digital-detox/">digital detox</a>. The chance to disconnect and fully immerse in the moment has become a modern indulgence.</p> <p>Luxury travellers today use their trips to <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1447677023000207">explore and learn</a>, and to <a href="https://www.thetimes.com/article/why-extreme-escapism-is-the-latest-luxury-travel-trend-pntgrsr8b?id=21336839644&amp;gad_source=1&amp;region=global">reconnect with the world</a>, their relationships, and themselves.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Why the royal family is set to receive an eye-watering pay increase

<p>The members of the British royal family are set to receive a record-breaking pay increase, funded by British taxpayers. </p> <p>From April 2025, the amount the royals will receive from the Sovereign Grant - funded by the UK’s public purse – will jump by a whopping £45 million (A$88 million), to £132 million ($260 million).</p> <p>Not everyone is happy about this enormous pay increase, as CEO of Republic Graham Smith said that while the UK remains in the clutches of the cost of living crisis, it is not the time for such a hefty increase to one of the richest families in the world. </p> <p>“This is public money, all of this money comes from the government, at a time when the government is not able to properly fund schools, hospitals police … It is scandalous,” Smith told <em><a href="https://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/tradition/a63330811/british-royal-family-money-finances-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Town &amp; Country</a></em>.</p> <p>“Not only should it not be going up at all, it should be going down.”</p> <p>The increase was first announced last year, with Buckingham Palace officials saying at the time that a huge chunk of that extra cash will be put towards the £369 million ($728 million) bill for long-planned, necessary Palace renovations.</p> <p>The exact amount that is being allocated from this year’s Grant for the work has not been made public.</p> <p>The Grant was established in 2012 in order to help the royal family pay for expenses related to their official duties, with the vast majority usually spent on property maintenance and staffing.</p> <p>When the Grant first came into effect, there were many more working royals which required a larger pool of funding. </p> <p>Now that the royal roster has been stripped back, royal author Richard Palmer believes the public is now “getting less for their money”.</p> <p>He told <em>Town &amp; Country</em>, “I do think that the monarchy in general does a good job for the country and is part of the glue that binds us all together but that doesn’t mean that as an institution, as individuals, they should be able to avoid criticism. Mystery couple pay off dozens of toy laybys ahead of Christmas

<p>An anonymous couple has paid off the layby gifts for almost 100 Melbourne families at Toyworld Pakenham. </p> <p>The mystery secret Santa put the plan into motion almost six months ago, chipping away at layby balances for families at the toy store. </p> <p>The kind act was revealed on Wednesday, with tearful customers thanking the family. </p> <p>“My children are actually going to have a great Christmas, thank you to all these people,” customer and mum-of-two Melissa Roberson told <em>7NEWS </em>through tears.</p> <p>“It’s going to help us significantly.”</p> <p>Toyworld employee Sandra Evans said: “I don’t know much about the family, all I know is that it’s a husband and wife and they’ve got four young children." </p> <p>“It’s been going for a while, so to hide that from everybody that comes in asking ‘can I put this on layby’, thinking 'you’re going to get this paid off soon’.”</p> <p>The couple were not the only ones who are trying to spread some Christmas cheer, last week a mystery Good Samaritan performed a similar act at Toyworld in Helensvale on the Gold Coast. </p> <p>Customer and mum Brooklyn Manu received a call saying a generous gentleman had walked in the store and told the manager he would pay off every layby item in the store - including the  presents she was paying off for her children. </p> <p>“We were very teary-eyed, all of us were,” Toyworld manager Aleka Riggs said.</p> <p>“It’s a feel-good thing you don’t see a lot, it’s beyond kindness — really amazing someone would do that.”</p> <p>All those families have now saved thousands of dollars, and Riggs said: “Just thank you again, I can only imagine there are a lot of families that might be struggling to pay those laybys off."</p> <p><em>Image: 7NEWS</em></p>

Life-support of 16-year-old turned off after deadly snake bite

<p>Beau Horan, 16, was in the backyard of his family home in Gladstone, Queensland on Monday afternoon when an eastern brown snake bit him on the leg. </p> <p>The teenager wasn't aware that he had been bitten, and it was only when he collapsed that his family knew something was seriously wrong. </p> <p>"By the time they found him collapsed, they called an ambulance and it was only then they realised he'd been bitten by a snake," family friend Shaun Connolly told <em>Yahoo News</em>.</p> <p>Beau was rushed to a nearby hospital before he was medically airlifted to Brisbane where he was put on a life-support machine. </p> <p>"I'm going off what his mum has told me... she's distraught as you can imagine," Connolly said. "We don't know too much what the circumstances were, but we think he wasn't aware he had been bitten," Shaun said.</p> <p>Brown snakes are extremely venomous and responsible 41 per cent of snake bites in the country. While fatalities remain relatively low, with two deaths reported on average each year, the potency of their venom is incredibly strong, containing severe neurotoxins that result in progressive paralysis and heart failure.</p> <p>The family has since had to make the heartbreaking decision of turning off Beau's life support machine, with his mum, Bek Eddy, and two sisters having to cover the unexpected medical and funeral costs. </p> <p>Connolly has set up a <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-tradgic-loss-of-16-year-old-beau-horan?cdn-cache=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GoFundMe</a> page to help alleviate some of the pressure for the family during these uncertain times. </p> <p>"It's just so sad," Shaun said.</p> <p>Beau's family have described him as a "vibrant, compassionate [and] a loving young man" who had a "bright future ahead of him", and they have been left with "indescribable emptiness" following his death. </p> <p><em>Image: GoFundMe</em></p>

Balance declines with age, but exercise can help stave off some of the risk of falling

<div class="theconversation-article-body"><em><a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/evan-papa-1433146">Evan Papa</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/tufts-university-1024">Tufts University</a></em></p> <p>My wife and I were in the grocery store recently when we noticed an older woman reaching above her head for some produce. As she stretched out her hand, she lost her balance and began falling forward. Fortunately, she leaned into her grocery cart, which prevented her from falling to the ground.</p> <p>Each year, about <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/65/wr/mm6537a2.htm">1 in every 4 older adults experience a fall</a>. In fact, falls are the leading cause of injuries in adults ages 65 and older. Falls are the <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/bf00298717">most common cause of hip fractures</a> and <a href="https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1553-2712.2000.tb00515.x">traumatic brain injuries</a>.</p> <p>Injuries like those are also <a href="https://doi.org/10.1056/NEJM199710303371806">risk factors for placement in a nursing home</a>, where the fall risk is <a href="https://doi.org/10.7326/0003-4819-121-6-199409150-00009">nearly three times higher than for people living in the community</a>.</p> <p>A number of physical changes with aging often go unseen preceding falls, including muscle weakness, decreased balance and changes in vision.</p> <p>I am a <a href="https://facultyprofiles.tufts.edu/evan-papa">physical therapist</a> and <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=T9B_dHQAAAAJ&amp;hl=en">clinical scientist focused on fall prevention</a> in older adults, commonly ages 65 and older. I’ve spent most of my career investigating why older adults fall and working with patients and their families to prevent falls.</p> <h2>Why aging leads to increased risk of falls</h2> <p>Aging is a process that affects the systems and tissues of every person. The rate and magnitude of aging may be different for each person, but overall physical decline is an inevitable part of life. Most people think aging starts in their 60s, but in fact we spend most of our life span <a href="https://doi.org/10.1093%2Fgeront%2Fgnv130">undergoing the process of decline</a>, typically beginning in our 30s.</p> <p>Older adults are more prone to falling for various reasons, including age-related changes in their bodies and vision changes that leave them vulnerable to environmental factors such as curbs, stairs and carpet folds.</p> <figure><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ztPbKP68P2Q?wmode=transparent&amp;start=24" width="440" height="260" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe><figcaption><span class="caption">Some straightforward measures to improve the safety of the home environment for older adults can significantly lower the risk of falls.</span></figcaption></figure> <p>Based on my experience, here are some common reasons older adults may experience falls:</p> <p>First, <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/23167-sarcopenia">aging leads to a natural loss of muscle strength</a> and flexibility, making it more challenging to maintain balance and stability. The loss of strength and poor balance are two of the most common causes of falls.</p> <p>Second, older adults often have chronic conditions such as arthritis, Parkinson’s disease or diabetes that can affect their mobility, coordination and overall stability.</p> <p>In addition, certain medications commonly taken by older adults, <a href="https://doi.org/10.4088/jcp.18f12340">such as sedatives</a> or <a href="https://doi.org/10.1001/jamainternmed.2013.14764">blood pressure drugs</a>, can cause dizziness, drowsiness or a drop in blood pressure, leading to an increased risk of falls.</p> <p>Age-related vision changes, such as reduced depth perception and peripheral vision and difficulty in differentiating colors or contrasts, can make it harder to navigate and identify potential hazards. Hazards in the environment, such as uneven surfaces, slippery floors, inadequate lighting, loose rugs or carpets or cluttered pathways, can <a href="https://doi.org/10.1186/s12877-021-02499-x">significantly contribute to falls among older adults</a>.</p> <p>Older adults who lead a sedentary lifestyle or have limited physical activity may also experience reduced strength, flexibility and balance.</p> <p>And finally, such conditions as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease can affect judgment, attention and spatial awareness, leading to increased fall risk.</p> <h2>Theories of aging</h2> <p>There are numerous theories about why we age but there is no one unifying notion that explains all the changes in our bodies. A large portion of aging-related decline is <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3295054/">caused by our genes</a>, which determine the structure and function of bones, muscle growth and repair and visual depth perception, among other things. But there are also numerous lifestyle-related factors that influence our rate of aging including diet, exercise, stress and exposure to environmental toxins.</p> <p>A recent advance in scientific understanding of aging is that there is a difference between your <a href="https://theconversation.com/are-you-a-rapid-ager-biological-age-is-a-better-health-indicator-than-the-number-of-years-youve-lived-but-its-tricky-to-measure-198849">chronological age and your biological age</a>. Chronological age is simply the number of years you’ve been on the Earth. Biological age, however, refers to how old your cells and tissues are. It is based on physiological evidence from a blood test and is related to your physical and functional ability. Thus, if you’re healthy and fit, your biological age may be lower than your chronological age. However, the reverse can also be true.</p> <p>I encourage patients to focus on their biological age because it empowers them to take control over the aging process. We obviously have no control over when we are born. By focusing on the age of our cells, we can avoid long-held beliefs that our bodies are destined to develop cancer, diabetes or other conditions that <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2012.07.024">have historically been tied to how long we live</a>.</p> <p>And by taking control of diet, exercise, sleep and other lifestyle factors you can actually <a href="https://doi.org/10.1111%2Facel.13538">decrease your biological age</a> and improve your quality of life. As one example, our team’s research has shown that moderate amounts of aerobic exercise <a href="https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0188538">can slow down motor decline</a> even when a person begins exercise in the latter half of the life span.</p> <h2>Fall prevention</h2> <p>Adopting lifestyle changes such as regular, long-term exercise can <a href="https://doi.org/10.1001/jamainternmed.2018.5406">reduce the consequences of aging</a>, including falls and injuries. Following a healthy diet, managing chronic conditions, reviewing medications with health care professionals, maintaining a safe home environment and getting regular vision checkups can also help reduce the risk of falls in older adults.</p> <p>There are several exercises that physical therapists use to improve balance for patients. It is important to note however, that before starting any exercise program, everyone should consult with a health care professional or a qualified physical therapist to determine the most appropriate exercises for their specific needs. Here are five forms of exercise I commonly recommend to my patients to improve balance:</p> <ol> <li> <p>Balance training can help improve coordination and <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/neuroscience/proprioception">proprioception</a>, which is the body’s ability to sense where it is in space. By practicing movements that challenge the body’s balance, such as standing on one leg or walking heel-to-toe, the nervous system becomes better at coordinating movement and maintaining balance. A large research study analyzing nearly 8,000 older adults found that balance and functional exercises <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/14651858.cd012424.pub2">reduce the rate of falls by 24%</a>.</p> </li> <li> <p>Strength training exercises involve lifting weights or using resistance bands to increase muscle strength and power. By strengthening the muscles in the legs, hips and core, older adults can improve their ability to maintain balance and stability. Our research has shown that strength training can also lead to <a href="https://doi.org/10.2147/cia.s104674">improvements in walking speed and a reduction in fall risk</a>.</p> </li> <li> <p>Tai chi is a gentle martial art that focuses on slow, controlled movements and shifting body weight. Research shows that it can improve balance, strength and flexibility in older adults. Several combined studies in tai chi have demonstrated a 20% reduction in the <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/14651858.cd012424.pub2">number of people who experience falls</a>.</p> </li> <li> <p>Certain yoga poses can enhance balance and stability. Tree pose, warrior pose and mountain pose are examples of poses that can help improve balance. It’s best to <a href="https://theconversation.com/yoga-modern-research-shows-a-variety-of-benefits-to-both-body-and-mind-from-the-ancient-practice-197662">practice yoga</a> under the guidance of a qualified instructor who can adapt the poses to individual abilities.</p> </li> <li> <p>Flexibility training involves stretching the muscles and joints, which can improve range of motion and reduce stiffness. By improving range of motion, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3990889/">older adults can improve their ability to move safely</a> and avoid falls caused by limitations in mobility.</p> </li> <li> <p>Use of assistive devices can be helpful when strength or balance impairments are present. Research studies involving the evaluation of canes and walkers used by older adults confirm that <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.apmr.2004.04.023">these devices can improve balance and mobility</a>. Training from a physical or occupational therapist in the proper use of assistive devices is an important part of improving safety.</p> </li> </ol> <p>When I think back about the woman who nearly fell in the grocery store, I wish I could share everything we have learned about healthy aging with her. There’s no way to know if she was already putting these tips into practice, but I’m comforted by the thought that she may have avoided the fall by being in the right place at the right time. What washing machine settings can I use to make my clothes last longer?

They can’t do their laundry <a href="https://www.esa.int/Enabling_Support/Space_Engineering_Technology/Keeping_your_underwear_clean_on_the_Moon">just yet</a> because water is scarce up there.</p> <p>But down here on Earth, washing clothes is a large part of our lives. <a href="https://bigee.net/media/filer_public/2013/03/28/bigee_domestic_washing_machines_worldwide_potential_20130328.pdf">It’s estimated</a> that a volume of water equivalent to 21,000 Olympic swimming pools is used every day for domestic laundry worldwide.</p> <p>Fibres from our clothes make their way into the environment via the air (during use or in the dryer), water (washing) and soil (lint rubbish in landfill). Most of this fibre loss is invisible – we often only notice our favourite clothing is “disappearing” when it’s too late.</p> <p>How can you ensure your favourite outfit will outlast your wish to wear it? Simple question, complex answer.</p> <h2>Washing machines are not gentle</h2> <p>When you clean the filters in your washing machine and dryer, how often do you stop to think that the lint you’re holding <a href="https://theconversation.com/uk-laundry-releases-microfibres-weighing-the-equivalent-of-1-500-buses-each-year-199712"><em>was</em>, in fact, your clothes</a>?</p> <p>Laundering is harsh on our clothes, and <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0250346">research confirms this</a>. Several factors play a role: the type of washing machine, the washing cycle, detergents, temperature, time, and the type of fabric and yarn construction.</p> <p>There are two types of domestic washing machines: top-loader and front-loader. Mechanical agitation (the way the machine moves the clothes around) is one of the things that helps ease dirt off the fabric.</p> <p>Top-loaders have a vertical, bucket-like basket with a paddle, which sloshes clothes around in a large volume of water. Front-loaders have a horizontal bucket which rotates, exposing the clothes to a smaller volume of water – it takes advantage of gravity, not paddles.</p> <p>Top-loading machines <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12541-010-0047-7">tend to be more aggressive</a> towards fabrics than front-loaders due to the different mechanical action and larger volumes of water.</p> <p>Washing machine panels also present many choices. Shorter, low-temperature programs <a href="https://clevercare.info/more-eco-temperature-tips">are usually sufficient for everyday stains</a>. Choose longer or <a href="https://iprefer30.eu/animations/UK/wash-brochure-uk.pdf">high-temperature programs</a> only for clothing you have concerns about (healthcare uniforms, washable nappies, etc.).</p> <p>Generally, washing machine programs are carefully selected combinations of water volume, agitation intensity and temperature recommended by the manufacturer. They take into consideration the type of fabric and its level of cleanliness.</p> <p>Select the wrong program and you can say goodbye to your favourite top. For example, high temperatures or harsh agitation may cause some fibres to weaken and break, causing holes in the garment.</p> <h2>Some fabrics lose fibres more easily than others</h2> <p>At a microscopic level, the fabric in our clothes is made of yarns – individual fibres twisted together. The nature and length of the fibres, the way they are twisted and the way the yarns form the fabric can determine how many fibres will be lost during a wash.</p> <p>In general, if you want to lose fewer fibres, you should wash less frequently, but some fabrics are affected more than others.</p> <p>Open fabric structures (knits) with loose yarns <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-98836-6">can lose more fibres</a> than tighter ones. Some sports clothing, like running shirts, are made of continuous filament yarn. These fibres are less likely to come loose in the wash.</p> <p>Cotton fibres are only a few centimetres long. Twisted tightly together into a yarn, they can still escape.</p> <p>Wool fibres are also short, but have an additional feature: scales, which make wool clothes much more delicate. Wool fibres can come loose like cotton ones, but also tangle with each other during the wash due to their scales. This last aspect is what causes wool garments to shrink when <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/004051756403400303">exposed to heat</a> and agitation.</p> <h2>Go easy on the chemicals</h2> <p>The type of detergent and other products you use also makes a difference.</p> <p>Detergents contain a soap component, enzymes to make stains easier to remove at low temperature, and fragrances. Some contain harsher compounds, such as bleaching or whitening agents.</p> <p>Modern detergents are very effective at <a href="https://www.choice.com.au/home-and-living/laundry-and-cleaning/laundry-detergents/review-and-compare/laundry-detergents">removing stains such as food</a>, and you don’t need to use much.</p> <p>An incorrect choice of wash cycles, laundry detergent and bleaching additives could cause disaster. Certain products, like bleach, can <a href="https://site.extension.uga.edu/textiles/textile-basics/understand-your-fibers/">damage some fibres like wool and silk</a>.</p> <p>Meanwhile, research on <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0269749120366872?via%3Dihub">fabric softeners and other treatments</a> <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/file?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0233332&amp;type=printable">continues</a> – there’s no one-size-fits-all answer about their potential impact on our clothes.</p> <h2>Just skip laundry day</h2> <p>So, how to ensure your clothes last longer? The main tip is to wash them less often.</p> <p>When it’s time for a wash, carefully read and follow the care labels. In the future, our washing machines will <a href="https://www.teknoscienze.com/tks_article/trends-in-laundry-by-2030/">recognise fabrics and select the wash cycle</a>. For now, that’s our responsibility.</p> <p>And the next time you throw your shirt into the dirty laundry basket, stop. Think of the astronauts orbiting above Earth and ask yourself: if they can go without clean laundry for a few days, maybe I can too? Raygun shows off stunning post-Olympics transformation

<p>Infamous Australian breakdancer Raygun has debuted her new look on the front page of <em>Stellar</em> magazine, just months after gaining global notoriety at the Paris Olympics.</p> <p>Rachael “Raygun” Gunn's infamous performance at the Olympics gained her not one single point in the competition, with her unusual style of dance going viral and parodied around the world.</p> <p>Now, Raygun has ditched the green and gold Olympic tracksuit and debuted her new look for her cover story with <em>Stellar</em> magazine.</p> <p>With her hair sleekly pulled back, Raygun shared the photo of her looking radiant in a vibrant blue dress and strappy black sandals, complete with a bold red lip.</p> <p>Though the full interview isn’t released until Sunday, the cover offers a tantalising glimpse into Raygun’s mindset, with quotes reading, “You did not bring me down. You did not succeed. I still stand by what I did.” </p> <p>The quotes echo Raygun's <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/entertainment/tv/weak-raygun-s-tell-all-interview-divides-audience" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tell-all interview</a> with Waleed Aly on <em>The Project</em> that she conducted after returning from Paris to a barrage of ridicule from Australia. </p> <p>While some people, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, thought Raygun gave it her best try, others were quick to call her out for "making a mockery of Australia". </p> <p>Speaking for the first time since the Olympics, Raygun told Waleed Aly in September that the backlash to her performance had a huge impact on her mental health. </p> <p>“I didn’t understand the scale of it,” she said. “I did preview some comments and I was like, ‘Oh, no’, and this kind of sick feeling started coming out. I was like, ‘Oh, goodness! What has happened?’”</p> <p>“It was really sad, how much hate that it did evoke,” she said. “There’s been a portion of very angry and awful responses, not only attacking me but attacking my husband, attacking my crew, attacking the breaking and street dance community in Australia, my family.
