Bunnings announce game-changing venture

Everyone is well-acquainted with multiple trips to Bunnings for forgotten items, but now the retail giant's new venture with Uber could make life just a little easier before Christmas.

The retail giant is teaming up with the rideshare and courier service to equip over 100 regional and metropolitan stores with same day parcel delivery.

So shoppers looking for a last minute Christmas gift can get same day parcel delivery for orders placed by 2pm right up until December 23rd. The packages will be delivered by 7pm that day.

With Australia Post Christmas delivery cut-offs set to take effect from December 20, the retail giants same-day delivery service with Uber makes it much easier for shoppers over the holiday season.

The service will operate via the Bunnings website, at a flat fee of $15 for any purchases.

The only condition is that for some regional outlets, the same-day delivery guarantee is subject to geographical limits, a radius of 15 kilometres from any store.

“We’re committed to offering our customers the best experience, widest range and lowest prices, and same day parcel delivery across regional Australia is another way we can improve this offering”, Bunnings Chief Operating Officer, Ryan Baker said.

“This builds on our current same day parcel delivery offering across metro Australia, bringing more convenience to our regional customers, and hopefully helping to ease some of the stress this time of year can bring.”

Baker also emphasised that this service would not replace the in-store experience Aussies love.

“Some customers value coming into the store to browse, talk to the team and enjoy the Bunnings experience such as a coffee in the cafe or the sausage sizzle hosted by a local community group. But for others, the convenience of delivery is preferred,” he said.

Image: haireena / Shutterstock.com

Christmas can be challenging for people with hearing loss. Here are 7 ways you can help

Katie Ekberg, Flinders University and Louise Hickson, The University of Queensland

For many people, Christmas can be the most social time of the year. The holiday period is often filled with parties, lunches, dinners and celebrations of all kinds with family, friends and colleagues.

For adults with hearing loss, however, these social gatherings can bring unique challenges. Communicating with others can be difficult, particularly in group conversations. And the more background noise there is (for example, Christmas music or children playing), the harder it is.

For age-related or acquired hearing loss, hearing ability typically starts to decline from age 50 onwards. One in six Australians experience some hearing loss, so it’s possible someone around your Christmas dinner table will be struggling to hear.

Unfortunately, many adults with hearing loss suffer these challenges in silence. Our research shows adults with hearing loss often hide their hearing loss from others, even close family members and friends, because of feeling shame due to stigma.

But there are some things you can do to ensure a loved one with hearing loss is included this Christmas.

Stigma and stereotypes

Stigma is when someone is treated differently by others due to a particular physical or social attribute.

Across a series of studies, we conducted surveys and interviews with adults with hearing loss, their families and hearing care professionals to explore experiences of stigma for adults with hearing loss. Our research also included video recordings of real-life conversations between adults with hearing loss and their families and friends.

The results suggested people often associate hearing loss with negative stereotypes of ageing, disability, reduced intelligence, having a problem or weakness, and difference. For example, one participant with hearing loss told us:

Once they are aware that you can’t really comprehend or hear what they’re saying, they treat you different. And it’s not always positive, it’s quite often negative […] Even people who are familiar with you, my twin brother, he thinks that there’s something wrong with me because I can’t hear him properly.

Old age was the most common stereotype associated with hearing loss. For example, one adult with hearing loss commented:

I guess it’s just a sign of ageing. Like wearing glasses and grey hair.

But as hearing can start declining from middle age, many adults experiencing hearing difficulties do not fit this stereotype.

We see this stereotype appear in popular media as well. For example, in the TV show Bluey, the character Bingo dresses up as a “Can’t-Hear-Anything granny” in a number of episodes.

In our research, people with hearing loss reported feeling embarrassment, shame, frustration, sadness and fatigue from trying to manage their hearing difficulties during everyday conversations.

In the results of a survey currently under peer review, almost two-thirds felt other people laughed about or treated their hearing loss as a joke, often making them feel uncomfortable.

An example of this teasing can be seen in a real-life conversation we recorded with a grandfather with hearing loss and his extended family while having afternoon tea.

After the older man has ongoing trouble hearing his granddaughters, his wife teases him with the question “You got your hearing aids in Grandpa?”, which receives laughter from his son and granddaughters.

While this sort of teasing might seem light-hearted, it can cause someone with hearing loss to feel embarrassed when they have trouble hearing.

A key finding from our interview research was that adults with hearing loss respond to experiences of stigma by not telling others about their hearing loss.

Similarly, in an international survey of 331 adults with hearing loss, the results of which are yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, one in four had not told anyone about their hearing loss. Others only told certain people in specific circumstances.

There might, therefore, be family and friends at your Christmas gatherings facing the challenges of hearing loss without anyone knowing.

Supporting loved ones with hearing loss this Christmas

For adults with hearing loss, experiences of stigma can cause them to start to withdraw from social situations, participate less in conversations, and become more socially isolated and lonely.

But a greater awareness about hearing loss and inclusive communication can help tackle the stigma. Here are some simple ways you can be more inclusive of people with hearing loss this festive season:

Think about the location of your event – how noisy is it? When possible, choose restaurants and social settings that are quieter. Outdoor settings will generally be less noisy than indoor ones (apps such as The Ambient Menu can help you choose).

Turn down background noise if you can (for example, TV, radio, music).

Speak face-to-face as much as possible. This allows for lip-reading so that people are not just reliant on their hearing. If you know someone has difficulty hearing, move closer to them and talk clearly and slightly more slowly.

Arrange seating in a way that allows everyone to face each other. Round tables are best.

Give people the opportunity to choose where they are seated around a table or in a restaurant. Adults with hearing loss may position themselves in the middle of a table or next to specific people they need to hear.

If you are at an event with speeches, use a microphone when possible.

If you notice a person not joining in the conversation you could ask them if they can hear OK and, if not, what you can do to help.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. One Aussie state confirms January 26th parade won't be returning

The Victorian government has confirmed that the Australia Day parade in Melbourne won't be returning in 2025, after it was cancelled four years ago.

The government has still planned a host of activities for January 26th, such as the annual 21-gun salute at the Shrine of Remembrance and RAAF flyover, as well as a flag-raising ceremony at Government House.

“The Victorian Government supports a range of Australia Day events that celebrate what makes our state and nation special,” A Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet spokesperson told news.com.au.

“The program for Australia Day 2025 provides a range of free and accessible events for Victorian families.”

However, there are no plans to reinstate the Australia Day parade, as a Department of Premier and Cabinet spokesman told the Herald Sun: “We also recognise that January 26 means different things to different people.

“On this day, we encourage conversation and reflection on the different meanings of the day for all Victorians.”

Ngarra Murray, Co-chair of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, agreed with the decision to cut the Melbourne parade.

“The Aboriginal community has a range of views on January 26, but whichever way you look at it, it’s a day of mourning for a lot of our people,” Ms Murray told the Herald Sun. “So it’s not a date to celebrate.”

While many Victorian councils are at odds on whether to celebrate Australia Day or not, City of Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj said the decision to hold events on January 26th should come from the state.

“It is important to note that Australia Day is a national day proclaimed by the federal government, and the decision on which date to observe it is not one for local councils to make,” he said.

“Australia Day is a day when we should be reflecting on and celebrating everything that is great and good about this country.”

The Australia Day parade in Melbourne was first cancelled in 2020, with then premier Dan Andrews citing Covid-19 concerns as the reason.

How to turn your gift-giving crisis into a Christmas miracle

Christmas is coming, and with it, the annual What do I get everyone?! panic. Every year it’s the same: endless debates about whether Dad really needs another tie, your sister’s mysterious aversion to gift cards, and the horrifying memory of that one time you gave your neighbour a single fruitcake. Let’s be honest – nobody wants a single fruitcake. This year, skip the stress and let Hamper World turn your gift-giving crisis into a Christmas miracle.

Hamper World has been the secret Santa we all need for over 25 years, crafting stunning gift hampers packed with the best Australian-made goodies. We’re talking premium wines, gourmet snacks, fancy chocolates and artisanal treats that taste like they were made by elves with Michelin stars. It’s the kind of stuff that makes people’s eyes light up before they’ve even finished unwrapping it.

The beauty of these hampers is that they don’t just scream thoughtful gift. They also whisper, I didn’t just pick this up on the way here. Whether you’re shopping for family, friends, co-workers or that one random person who showed up for Christmas lunch (we all have one), there’s a hamper that’ll fit the bill – and make you look like a gifting genius in the process.

Now, here’s the kicker: these hampers aren’t just packed with amazing stuff; they’re also doing some serious good. Every item is sourced from Australian producers, so your Christmas cheer is supporting local farmers, chocolatiers and small businesses. It’s basically like giving two gifts in one: one to your loved one, and one to Australia’s economy. Take that, Santa.

And don’t get us started on delivery. You know that classic Christmas movie moment where the hero races through the snow (or, in our case, the scorching summer heat), trying to deliver the perfect gift? You don’t need that drama. Hamper World ships all over Australia, making sure your gift arrives looking as festive and fabulous as it did when it left. Whether it’s bound for a city penthouse or a bush retreat, your hamper will get there on time and looking sharp.

But the real magic is in the presentation. Hamper World wraps these beauties up like they belong on the cover of a gourmet magazine. No need for awkward DIY attempts at gift wrapping that end with you covered in tape and regret. Just order, sit back and bask in the glory of being the best gift-giver in the history of your family.

Christmas hampers are also a great solution for those tricky situations. Got a boss who already has everything? Boom, corporate hamper. Want to thank your neighbours for putting up with your late-night karaoke sessions? Sweet treats hamper, done. And don’t forget to treat yourself – after all, nothing says Merry Christmas to me like a hamper full of wine and cheese.

So, this Christmas, skip the socks, the scented candles and the questionable DIY projects. Head over to www.hamperworld.com.au or call 1800 566 433 and let Hamper World handle the heavy lifting.

Because the only thing better than giving the perfect gift is doing it without breaking a sweat – and maybe even snagging a 10% gift card if you order early. Now that’s the holiday spirit.

Images: Supplied

This is a sponsored article produced in partnership with Hamper World

Councils backflipping after move to cancel Australia Day

In what political analysts are calling "the great municipal U-turn", Victorian councils have put their collective heads together and decided to reconsider their reconsiderations about Australia Day celebrations in 2025 and beyond. For residents of the City of Greater Geelong, this means the local council is back on the Australia Day bandwagon – at least until next Tuesday.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj, who is now the face of political flexibility, defended the council’s decision to task the chief executive with preparing yet another report. “It is important to note that Australia Day is a national day proclaimed by the federal government," he said. "And the decision on which date to observe it is not one for local councils to make. Australia Day is a day when we should be reflecting on and celebrating everything that is great and good about this country.”

Last year, the council boldly decided to change how Australia Day was celebrated, citing community feedback and consultation with First Nations Peoples. This year, they consulted again, only to discover the community had changed its mind, or possibly just discovered the feedback forms.

The City of Greater Bendigo also weighed in by shifting its citizenship ceremony to January 25 last year, rather than January 26. And Strathbogie Shire Council also reversed its decision to stop supporting January 26 celebrations, citing a passionate open letter from the Eurora Australia Day Committee.

While we're tempted to dub this latest move "The Great Waffling", councils insist they are simply reflecting the will of the people. Local satirists, meanwhile, are pushing for January 27 to be declared "Reversal Day", where councils could gather to debate reversing their reversals.

For now, Victorians can rest assured their councils are hard at work – at least until someone asks for another consultation.

Images: Shutterstock

"Thank god you're here": Couple rescued after 3-day ordeal

A couple in their 50s have been rescued after spending days stranded in Queensland.

The couple and their two dogs were stuck for three days in the remote Gulf of Carpentaria, north-west of Staaten River National Park, after getting swept away in flood waters.

It is believed their 4WD was overcome by a large wave at a river crossing, when they managed to escape the vehicle through the passenger side window and make it to shore.

The man then swam back into croc-infested waters to free their two dogs.

The couple and their animals then had to battle no reception and no food for three days, drinking water from the river to get them through.

They scrawled "SOS" in the sand, with the distress message eventually being seen by a LifeFlight helicopter from the air.

They were airlifted to hospital and treated for dehydration and exposure, alongside their two dogs.

It was experienced New Zealand pilot Michael Adair's first week working at LifeFlight and he said the couple had lost hope they would be rescued.

"They said, 'Thank god you're here, we didn't think anyone was coming,'" he told the ABC.

"The wife had told us she had been hearing voices in the bush from exposure and had convinced herself that nobody was coming to help them, so she was very emotional when we hugged her."

He added that the couple were in good spirits when the helicopter arrived.

"These people had resigned themselves to dying and seeing the look on their faces when they saw us and realised they weren't going to die — that's the reason we do this," he said.

"They were very happy and jovial to see us and then the reality of the fact that hey … they're about to be rescued — that's when the emotion welled up."

"Apology not accepted!" Steve Price blasts pub's Aus Day boycott

Steve Price has slammed the Aussie pub group responsible for cancelling January 26th celebrations in over 200 venues around the country.

After copping widespread backlash for the controversial move, Australian Venue Co apologised for causing "concern and confusion" with their decision to cancel any Aus Day celebrations in their venues out of respect for Indigenous Australians.

On Monday night's episode of The Project, Steve Price launched into a tirade about the decision, saying, “Apology not accepted!"

"When are these finger waving woke corporations going to wake up to the fact we don’t want them to tell us what to do on Australia Day,” he said.

“Last year it was Woolworths, ‘oh we won’t sell the flag’, the CEO, Brad Banducci, ended up losing his job. Hundreds of pubs cancel Australia Day celebrations

Hundreds of pubs in Australia will not be celebrating Australia Day due to the "hurt" the day causes some patrons.

The nation’s second-biggest pubs group, Australian Venue Co, informed its managers of the decision to cancel the January 26th celebrations at more than 200 of its venues around the country.

An Australian Venue Co spokeswoman told News Corp that the venues in question will not acknowledge or celebrate the national holiday out of respect.

“Australia Day is a day that causes sadness for some members of our community, so we have decided not to specifically celebrate a day that causes hurt for some of our patrons and our team,” the spokeswoman said.

Australian Venue Co’s website says it owns and operates the country’s “best-loved pubs, bars and event spaces”, including “landmark” institutions and humble locals.

Potentially affected locations include popular pubs in Victoria: The Esplanade Hotel and Prince of Wales in St Kilda, and the Duke of Wellington and Garden State Hotel in Melbourne.

Others are the iconic Regatta Hotel and The Port Office Hotel in Brisbane, Sydney’s Cargo and Adelaide’s The Colonist and the Parkside Hotel.

For many Indigenous Australians, January 26th marks the “invasion” of Britain’s First Fleet in 1788.

For them it is a day of great sorrow that reminds of the impact of colonialism on their culture, land and people.

Australia passes world-first social media ban for children under-16

Children under-16 will be banned from using social media from the end of next year, after the world-first legislation passed the parliament on Thursday.

The law means that anyone under the age of 16 will be blocked from using platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook among others, and will make the platforms liable with fines of up to $50 million for failing to prevent these children from holding social media accounts.

The Senate passed the bill 34 votes to 19 last Thursday, with The House of Representatives approving the legislation by 102 votes to 13 on Wednesday.

The platforms will have one year to work out how to implement the ban before penalties are enforced, however the laws have received mixed reviews from tech companies and mental health experts alike.

Meta Platforms, which owns Facebook and Instagram, said the legislation had been “rushed.”

Digital Industry Group Inc., an advocate for the platforms in Australia, also questioned how it would work and the impact it would have on children.

“The social media ban legislation has been released and passed within a week and, as a result, no one can confidently explain how it will work in practice – the community and platforms are in the dark about what exactly is required of them,” DIGI managing director Sunita Bose said.

The platforms cannot force people to provide government-issued identity documents, including the Digital ID, to assess their age.

“This policy will hurt vulnerable young people the most, especially in regional communities and especially the LGBTQI community, by cutting them off,” Greens senator David Shoebridge said.

Mental health experts agreed that the social media ban could dangerously isolate children who used social media to find support.

Christopher Stone, executive director of Suicide Prevention Australia, added the legislation failed to consider positive aspects of social media in supporting young people's mental health.

“The government is running blindfolded into a brick wall by rushing this legislation. Young Australians deserve evidence-based policies, not decisions made in haste,” Stone said in a statement.

Online safety campaigner Sonya Ryan, whose 15-year-old daughter Carly was murdered by a 50-year-old pedophile who pretended to be a teenager online, described the Senate vote as a “monumental moment in protecting our children from horrendous harms online," in an email to the AP.

Wayne Holdsworth, a father whose son took his own life following a sextortion scam, also approved the decision to introduce the age restriction.

Meta Platforms has responded to the new laws saying: “Naturally, we respect the laws decided by the Australian Parliament."

“However, we are concerned about the process which rushed the legislation through while failing to properly consider the evidence, what industry already does to ensure age-appropriate experiences, and the voices of young people.”

Image: BigTunaOnline / Shutterstock.com

World's oldest man passes away aged 112

The world's oldest man has passed away aged 112.

John Alfred Tinniswood held the title of world's oldest man for nine months and marked his 112th birthday during his reign, which sadly came to an end on Monday when he passed away in a care home northwest England near Liverpool.

His family confirmed his death in a statement, saying that the centenarian spent his final day "surrounded by music and love".

Tinniswood, who was born on 26 August 1912, the same year the Titanic sank, became the UK’s oldest man in 2020.

In April 2024, he was recognised as the world's oldest man by the Guinness Book of Records.

Tinniswood, who worked as an accountant for Shell and BP before retiring in 1972, attributed his longevity to "pure luck".

"You either live long or you live short, and you can't do much about it," the great-grandfather told the Guinness World Records in April.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Guinness World Records (@guinnessworldrecords)

He also said that moderation was key to a healthy life. Beloved Aussie musician dies days after revealing cancer diagnosis

Australian musician Richard Andrew has tragically died at the age of 58, just seven days after announcing he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.

Andrew, who has long been a fixture of the Melbourne music scene, passed away on October 30th, with his grieving wife confirming his death on a GoFundMe page.

Andrew's wife, Nicolette Powell, is now faced with mourning the sudden loss of her husband while caring for her mother, who is grappling with a terminal brain tumour.

"Nicolette's beloved husband, Richard, a well-known and iconic figure in Melbourne's music scene, recently passed away suddenly from cancer," the GoFundMe page's tribute to Andrew began.

"Richard was a talented musician who left his mark in bands like Underground Lovers, Crow and Black Cab as well as his own band Registered Nurse and more recently his solo project RJ Andrew."

"He was also the founder of Pharmacy Records. He poured his heart and soul into his music, and his legacy will be felt across Melbourne's music community for years to come."

Just one week before his untimely death, Andrew revealed to his fans he had been diagnosed with lung cancer in a social media message shared alongside a photo from his wedding to Powell.

"After my last unsuccessful attempt to jump 17 double decker buses – A) this may go someway towards explaining being in a wheelchair and, B) the fact I'm getting married to the beautiful Nicolette Powell, in this photo," he wrote on Facebook.

"Alas, although the marriage is definitely true and based on love, the double decker bus is, sadly, not quite the truth. Instead, a few month ago, I was diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic lung cancer, which has been a billy cart ride down s**t street, for the last little while."

Andrew then went on to issue a public farewell to his fans and loved ones.

"I am completely reconciled to whatever the future is, however, that future is probably quite limited and I'm in the process of preparing to pop this mortal coil and return to the trees, as it were," he wrote.

"I cannot overstate enough what an honour and a privilege it has been to know you all over the last 58 years, and to have lived the most incredible, incredible life."

Fasting, eating earlier in the day or eating fewer meals – what works best for weight loss?

Hayley O'Neill, Bond University and Loai Albarqouni, Bond University

Globally, one in eight people are living with obesity. This is an issue because excess fat increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers.

Modifying your diet is important for managing obesity and preventing weight gain. This might include reducing your calorie intake, changing your eating patterns and prioritising healthy food.

But is one formula for weight loss more likely to result in success than another? Our new research compared three weight-loss methods, to see if one delivered more weight loss than the others:

altering calorie distribution – eating more calories earlier rather than later in the day

eating fewer meals

intermittent fasting.

We analysed data from 29 clinical trials involving almost 2,500 people.

We found that over 12 weeks or more, the three methods resulted in similar weight loss: 1.4–1.8kg.

So if you do want to lose weight, choose a method that works best for you and your lifestyle.

Eating earlier in the day

When our metabolism isn’t functioning properly, our body can’t respond to the hormone insulin properly. This can lead to weight gain, fatigue and can increase the risk of a number of chronic diseases such as diabetes.

Eating later in the day – with a heavy dinner and late-night snacking – seems to lead to worse metabolic function. This means the body becomes less efficient at converting food into energy, managing blood sugar and regulating fat storage.

In contrast, consuming calories earlier in the day appears to improve metabolic function.

However, this might not be the case for everyone. Some people naturally have an evening “chronotype”, meaning they wake up and stay up later.

People with this chronotype appear to have less success losing weight, no matter the method. This is due to a combination of factors including genes, an increased likelihood to have a poorer diet overall and higher levels of hunger hormones.

Eating fewer meals

Skipping breakfast is common, but does it hinder weight loss? Or is a larger breakfast and smaller dinner ideal?

While frequent meals may reduce disease risk, recent studies suggest that compared to eating one to two meals a day, eating six times a day might increase weight loss success.

However, this doesn’t reflect the broader research, which tends to show consuming fewer meals can lead to greater weight loss. Our research suggests three meals a day is better than six. The easiest way to do this is by cutting out snacks and keeping breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Most studies compare three versus six meals, with limited evidence on whether two meals is better than three.

However, front-loading your calories (consuming most of your calories between breakfast and lunch) appears to be better for weight loss and may also help reduce hunger across the day. But more studies with a longer duration are needed.

Fasting, or time-restricted eating

Many of us eat over a period of more than 14 hours a day.

Eating late at night can throw off your body’s natural rhythm and alter how your organs function. Over time, this can increase your risk of type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases, particularly among shift workers.

Time-restricted eating, a form of intermittent fasting, means eating all your calories within a six- to ten-hour window during the day when you’re most active. It’s not about changing what or how much you eat, but when you eat it.

Animal studies suggest time-restricted eating can lead to weight loss and improved metabolism. But the evidence in humans is still limited, especially about the long-term benefits.

It’s also unclear if the benefits of time-restricted eating are due to the timing itself or because people are eating less overall. When we looked at studies where participants ate freely (with no intentional calorie limits) but followed an eight-hour daily eating window, they naturally consumed about 200 fewer calories per day.

What will work for you?

In the past, clinicians have thought about weight loss and avoiding weight gain as a simile equation of calories in and out. But factors such as how we distribute our calories across the day, how often we eat and whether we eat late at night may also impact our metabolism, weight and health.

There are no easy ways to lose weight. So choose a method, or combination of methods, that suits you best. You might consider

aiming to eat in an eight-hour window

consuming your calories earlier, by focusing on breakfast and lunch

opting for three meals a day, instead of six.

The average adult gains 0.4 to 0.7 kg per year. Improving the quality of your diet is important to prevent this weight gain and the strategies above might also help.

Finally, there’s still a lot we don’t know about these eating patterns. Many existing studies are short-term, with small sample sizes and varied methods, making it hard to make direct comparisons.

More research is underway, including well-controlled trials with larger samples, diverse populations and consistent methods. So hopefully future research will help us better understand how altering our eating patterns can result in better health.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Aussie Vietnam vet reunited with lost war medals just in time

A Vietnam veteran has been reunited with his lost war medals that were missing for a year, just in time for Remembrance Day.

When attending a Remembrance Day event in New Zealand last year, Townsville veteran Malcolm Edmiston lost his medals somewhere along the journey to Christchurch from Brisbane.

The medals were left sitting unclaimed in Brisbane Airport's lost and found after being found in an airport terminal, before airport staff launched a social media campaign to find their owner.

After seeing a post on Facebook, Edmiston was finally reunited with his precious medals just in time for this year's Remembrance Day events.

"It's very good to have them back, great to have them back, I thought they were gone and gone for good," Malcolm told Today.

"The zip was opened on my case and somehow they fell out, so it's a good reminder for us to take extra care when we pack."

Malcolm was not the only one in his family to serve the country, sharing how his father served in the Royal Navy, he had uncles in the Royal Australian Air Force and and the Royal Air Force and a brother who served in Naval Reserve.

His son also served in the Navy and with so many of his fellow Vietnam veteran soldiers no longer alive, having his medals back today is something special.

"Remembrance Day is a very important day for me," he said.

Brisbane Airport's media manager Peter Doherty added that he was thrilled to see the medals return to their rightful owner.

He said, "For Malcolm's lifetime of service, the least we could do was the door-to-door service to get the medals back to him."

World reacts as Donald Trump wins US election

World leaders, celebrities and millions of Americans have shared their first reactions and messages of support - or messages of anger, upset and frustration - as Donald Trump claimed his victory in the US election.

The Republican leader won both the electoral college vote and the popular vote, taking a hold of the majority of key swing states, as his victory just hours after the polls closed.

The win will see Trump re-enter the White House in January as the 47th President, making him the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms in office.

Reactions to the unprecedented win flooded online spaces, with world leaders sending their congratulations.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the election of the US president marked an important moment for Australia and the Asia Pacific region, and vowed to work closely with the Trump administration.

“Australia and America are old allies and we are true friends,” he said. “Our nations are bound by a history of shared sacrifice, a commitment to common values and — above all — enduring respect and affection between our peoples."

“I look forward to talking with President Trump and working with him in the best interests of both our nations.”

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton also extended his congratulations to the Republican leader on behalf of the federal Coalition, describing the US as an “overwhelming force for good”.

Unsurprisingly, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was among the first to speak to Trump, writing on X, “Congratulations on history’s greatest comeback!”

“Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America. This is a huge victory! In true friendship.”

Elon Musk, petulant billionaire and owner of Twitter, also shared a series of memes on X, after he publicly endorsed Trump throughout his campaign.

Among the posts is an image of Musk holding a bathroom sink photoshopped into the Oval Office with the caption "Let that sink in", a reference to how he marked his controversial takeover of X when it was still known as Twitter.

Musk also shared a photo of a conversation he was having with Trump as votes were being counted.

"The future is gonna be so [fire]," Musk said with American flag emojis.

"The future is gonna be fantastic," he said in a follow up post with a photo of his recent SpaceX rocket test that Trump discussed at length, for some reason, in his declaration speech.

Despite the messages of well wishes from world leaders, social media has been awash with messages of disbelief and anger since the victory was announced, with many American citizens anxious and scared about the next four years under Trump's controversial Project 2025, which will see mass deportations of immigrants, more tax cuts to the rich, harsher penalties for those seeking abortions or reproductive care, and unprecedented power in the hands of a President with authoritarian aspirations.

Bride's touching tribute to late father on her wedding day

"Who's going to walk me down the aisle?" those were the first words 13-year-old Bianca Accurso told her mother when she found out her father had passed away.

"I knew from that moment that I needed to feel like he was going to be there right there with me [on my wedding day]," the now mum-of-one told Yahoo Lifestyle.

"It was always important for me to acknowledge my dad in a special way at my wedding as he was my first love and whole world."

Bianca kept her promise to her teenage self when she got married earlier this year, and the way she did it was by tracking down the man who owned her late father's car, and asking him if she could use it on her big day.

"When going down the path of planning, I was writing down all that we needed to organise and tick off and ‘cars’ was one of the many things on the list," she recalled.

Her husband had asked her what car she wanted for the special day, and she quickly responded "an XY GT just like my Dad’s".

It was only when she brought up the topic of wedding cars to her mum that she had her "light bulb moment".

"I literally then had a light bulb moment and said out loud, ‘Hey imagine if I could get it..’. I asked my Mum to see if she still had the transfer papers and contact details of the male that she sold it to after Dad had passed."

It didn't take long for her to find the contact details for a man named Harold, while the phone call started a little awkwardly, once he realised who she was, they started talking like they were long lost friends.

"I then proceeded to ask if he still owned my dad’s GT, to which he responded, ‘I would never sell it’. I had total goosebumps," Bianca said.

"I then told Harold the real reason why I had called and explained to him my wish of driving to my wedding in my Dad’s GT. There was no hesitation and he quite literally responded, ‘I would be absolutely honoured to do that for you, count me in.’ I was speechless. The butterflies were fluttering in my tummy... it was a meant-to-be moment."

People were moved by Bianca's story which she posted on TikTok, with the video gaining almost a million views.

"Your father is watching down crying and praising that man for taking time out of his day to make yours even better ❤️❤️," one person wrote.

"The pure joy and happiness on your face ❤️ your dad may have not walked you down the aisle but he made sure you arrived in style..bless this beautiful man for doing this for you on your special day🥰🥰🥰," another added.

Bianca recalled the moment she saw the car for the first time, saying: "seeing my Dad’s car after 10 years was indescribable."

"My smile said it all. It looked like it had never been touched. I could picture my Dad in the driver's seat with me buckled in tightly by his side.

"When we were driving in it, it was pure joy and happiness! We were just so present and tried to enjoy every last moment. Harold made us feel so comfortable and gave us a ride that we will never forget."

Images: Instagram/ TikTok
