Hard to watch! Paralympic champion given the worst gifts ever

A Spanish Paralympic cyclist has been given the worst trophy gifts in history, with his calm and collected reaction making waves online.

Ricardo Ten Argiles was last week crowned world champion in three separate events at the 2023 UCI World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

During the post race ceremonies, he was presented with two gold medals, along with two very surprising gifts from the event's major sponsor: international watch company Tissot.

The 47-year-old was gifted not one, but TWO watches in a fancy display case, despite having both his arms amputated at the forearm.

A video of Ten keeping a straight face while being handed one of the watches has started to spread across the internet with more than 800,000 views.

Not a very well thought gift. pic.twitter.com/hRhaTfnGsE

— Cycling out of context (@OutOfCycling) August 14, 2023

One video shows Ten standing on the podium and exchanging some friendly words with an official as he holds the watch case tightly between his arms.

Understandably, the mortifying moment has been met with outrage and black humour.

The athlete himself has been laughing off the incident and has embraced the way his social media pages have exploded with comments.

Many of the comments suggested that Ten regift the expensive watches at Christmas, while others wondered how officials at the event could've let the awkward gifts happen.

Despite the outrage from fans, Ten responded to one news story about the “tactless blunder” by writing on Twitter, “I am very happy to have won two TISSOTs, one for each arm, but above all for what it means for Paralympic cycling, total inclusion of the sport at the highest level”.

"It's disgusting": Nursing home slammed for leaving double amputee on roof for hours

Lea Hammond has told ABC's 7:30 the heartbreaking story of her father's death and how he was left for hours on a roof in a heatwave in scorching Perth sun.

She received a phone call from her father's nursing home, Regis Nedlands, saying that an ambulance was taking her father to the hospital.

“[The staff member said] dad had been taken to hospital due to sunburn. They told me they couldn’t find him, they didn’t know where he was,” Lea said.

Lea arrived at the hospital, horrified to see her father Brian Hunter delirious and suffering serious blisters and burns.

“He was slumped over in the bed, and his back was exposed. I could see his back was really terribly burnt, his whole back was burned. And he was not speaking to us. He was semi in and out of consciousness,” Lea said, speaking about it for the first time to 7.30.

The family discovered that her 86-year-old double amputee father had been left on Regis Nedland's rooftop for two hours.

Police were involved and checked the CCTV footage, showing that a Regis staff member entered the access code for Brian to go onto the roof and let him propel himself onto the rooftop.

Staff at the nursing home are supposed to do hourly checks on residents, but no one noticed Brian was missing.

He was rescued after another resident's visitor saw him outside on the roof unconscious.

Lea says the incident is "disgusting".

“It’s disgusting that anyone would open a door on a 40-degree day and let a man outside with no water,” Lea said.

“No-one knows where he is for two hours. I mean, if that carer put him outside, shouldn’t she have reported that he’d gone outside? Why didn’t they know where he was for two hours?”

The nursing home did a report on the incident and found that Brian entered the access code to open the door to get onto the roof, not a carer.

Lea is furious about this version of events and disputes it.

“I felt quite angry about it that they would say something like that,” she said.

“I’ve visited so many times at Regis, and he really found it quite difficult to remember the key code number.

“Every time I went there, I would have to put the code in for him.”

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission has already sanctioned Regis Nedlands for putting residents at "serious risk" after finding 30 allegations of rough handling or unwanted sexual contact.

The Commission said it would continue to “closely monitor” Regis Nedlands, and if there were ongoing concerns about care and services it “may consider further regulatory action, including whether to vary or revoke the service’s accreditation”, according to an exclusive from the ABC's 7:30.

It wasn't the first incident Brian suffered at Regis, as he had a fall in November that left him with a black eye and a bleed on his brain.

After recovering from the burns, Brian lied in his bed for four weeks before passing away, with Lea saying no one from the nursing home called.

“At the end of his life, Dad barely spoke. He wasn’t speaking at all. They had to feed-tube him because he couldn’t swallow. And he barely recognised us,” she said.

“He was just a great father, wonderful grandfather, fantastic husband. This is just so distressing to see him being treated in that manner.

“I think he was just totally neglected, it’s awful.”

Prince Harry surprises double amputee in the best way

He may be a member of one of the most powerful families in the world, but when it comes to surprising an old friend, Prince Harry is just like the rest of us. When the cheeky royal paid a visit to his old mate, veteran soldier and double amputee Duncan Slater, he couldn’t resist having a bit of fun.

Duncan, who lost both his legs during a bomb blast while deployed in Afghanistan back in 2009, was training for the Marathon des Sables – a 250km race across the Sahara to raise money for Prince Harry’s charity, Walking with the Wounded – when he received the surprise of his life.

Prince Harry pays double amputee @DuncanSlater3 a surprise visit as he trains for @marathonDsables https://t.co/fnXKV13lUB @supportthewalk pic.twitter.com/IzBpURObbQ
— ITV News (@itvnews) April 3, 2017

The shocked former soldier couldn’t help but swear when he spotted the young royal, clearly in disbelief as he shook his hand. “Nice to see you,” Harry greeted Duncan. “This is horrible. I wasn't really in the neighbourhood but I had to come and see you sweating your balls off on a treadmill in a sauna!”

Amputee penguin gets new prosthetic foot

A penguin named Bagpipes had his foot amputated years ago after he was found back in 2007 with a fishing line wrapped around his leg.

Bagpipes, who's currently under the care of the International Antarctic Centre, has been waddling around on his stump. Recently, his life changed for the better when he was fitted for a 3-D printed prosthetic foot.

Senior lecturer at the University of Canterbury's mechanical engineering department Don Clucas, who is behind the prosthetic, designed and printed the prosthetic all for free.

"It's designed to level him out a bit and make life a bit more comfortable for him," penguin keeper Mal Hackett said in an interview with Stuff.co.nz. “Hopefully the prosthetic will make Bagpipes' life a little easier.”

Until now, the penguin, whose leg has been supported by foam beer bottle holders fitted around his foot, has experienced some trouble with infection. Now, the team at the centre is hoping that his new foot will alleviate his pain and help him learn how to walk and swim properly. Apparently, his trial run went “better than expected”.

Watch the video above to see the heart-warming progress of little Bagpipes.

Do you have an animal rescue story to share with us?
