Wedding bells for Barnaby Joyce

In a whirlwind of controversy and headlines, the love story between former Australian Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce and his political advisor Vikki Campion is about to take centre stage in the tranquil backdrop of rural Walcha.

According to The Daily Mail, the couple, whose relationship sparked a political firestorm, is all set to tie the knot in a "bush bash" themed wedding on November 12, right in the heart of New England's countryside.

With a select group of friends and loyal National Party supporters on the guest list, the nuptials are scheduled to kick off at 11am, at a location that is being kept tightly under wraps but is rumoured to be one of the Joyce family properties at nearby Woolbrook.

The couple has left no stone unturned in embracing the rustic charm of the Australian bush, and their guests have been given a taste of what's in store. Attendees are encouraged to arrive in their trusty utes or robust 4WD vehicles, roll out their swags, and get ready to party until the stars light up the outback sky.

A guest who is eagerly anticipating what has been dubbed the "political wedding of the year" described the event as reminiscent of a B&S (bachelor and spinster) ball, saying, "It's very much Barnaby getting back to his country roots...we can't wait. The naysayers said they wouldn't get to this point, but this is two people in love, and we can't wait to celebrate."

Further details about the exact wedding location will be shared with guests closer to the date, but they have been assured of an abundance of refreshments and entertainment well into the night.

Many of the attendees are expected to embrace the full country experience, spending the night in their swags under the vast, starlit sky or in the back of their trusty utes. For those who prefer a more comfortable resting place, a bus will be on hand to shuttle them back to the nearby town, where they can find lodgings at the local country hotel.

Adding to the sentimental charm of this country wedding are Joyce and Campion's two sons, Sebastian and Tom, who are expected to play a special role in the ceremony. The fact that the ceremony and reception are at the same location underscores the couple's desire to keep the event intimate and close-knit.

It is understood that one of Barnaby Joyce's four daughters from his previous marriage to Natalie will also be in attendance, marking a significant step toward mending relationships that have been strained since the affair came to light.

Barnaby Joyce's proposal to Vikki Campion over dinner in Coffs Harbour in January 2022 marked the beginning of a new chapter in their relationship, nearly four years after their affair was thrust into the public eye.

The journey to this wedding day was not without its challenges. At the height of the affair's revelation, the then Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, criticised Joyce for a "shocking error of judgment" due to the affair and the pain it caused the women in his life. Consequently, Joyce stepped down from his role as Deputy Prime Minister and Nationals leader in the face of mounting pressure to resign.

Natalie Joyce, Barnaby's former wife, was thrust into the spotlight when she claimed she had no knowledge of her husband's infidelity. Today, Barnaby Joyce serves as the Member for New England and holds the position of Shadow Minister for Veteran Affairs, representing the same region where his love story with Vikki Campion is set to culminate in a unique and charming "bush bash" wedding.

As the couple exchanges their vows and dances under the stars of rural Australia, they bid farewell to the past, embracing a brighter and more united future, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the New England countryside.

Image: Office of the Deputy Prime Minister

"Crossed a line": Bell Shakespeare's blistering response to negative review

Australian theatre company, Bell Shakespeare, has publicly issued a blistering response to a theatre critic’s “cruel and unfair” review.

The Age critic Cameron Woodhead gave the theatre company’s current production of Macbeth a two star rating - and he singled out the lead actor, Hazem Shammas’ performance of Macbeth.

In his review, Woodhead claimed that Shammas “belongs in the Richard III ward of Monty Python’s Hospital for Over-Acting”.

He said that the Logie-winning actor’s portrayal of Macbeth was “so cartoonish” and “unhinged” and that he was “stalked by the inappropriate silhouette of the clown”.

The 500-word review mostly nitpicked at Shammas’ performance, commenting on how he should reign in his “vein-popping excess” and “trust in the words” of Shakespeare, as if he knew what Shakespeare would’ve wanted.

The review was published online on April 27 and a week later Bell Shakespeare launched their blistering response on social media.

The statement began with the theatre company explaining that they are open to criticism and understand that sometimes there will be “creative differences”.

“The Age’s theatre critic, Cameron Woodhead, didn’t like our current production of Macbeth (May 1 edition). That’s his prerogative; many critics have provided favourable reviews of this production and Macbeth means many things to many people. One of the joys of seeing Shakespeare’s works is to debate them afterwards.

“This time though, we must call out conduct which, in our view, was cruel and unfair,” they wrote in their statement posted on Facebook.

“Cameron’s targeting of the lead actor Hazem Shammas was, in our view, belittling and contemptuous,” they added, citing Woodhead’s harsh comments.

“Whilst Cameron may have issues with the production, we do not consider a response should ever be draped in language like this. In our view, no actor deserves to be dismissed so personally in a theatre review”.

They added that Shammas’ personal life and Palestinian background allowed him to resonate with the fact that “Macbeth is driven by something that finally breaks him,” as that story was his “dad’s story in terms of coming to this land and then pursuing his dreams at all costs, in terms of the costs to himself and breaking the hearts of the ones he left behind.”

“Actors don’t have a voice when critics write negative things about them. It has long been thus. However, the stage is their workplace. And they are entitled to a safe space at work just as much as anyone,” they wrote, defending Shammas.

They ended the statement saying that Woodhead had “crossed a line”.

Many fans have applauded the company for standing up for their star, while others justified Woodhead’s criticism.

“Cameron Woodhead gave one of my novels a bruisingly rude review a few years ago. I think he enjoys unleashing the poison pen occasionally. I have finally managed to laugh about it, but it took me years,” commented one person.

“What a great response and wonderful example of integrity from Bell Shakespeare!” commented another person

“Good on you for calling this out. We can be critical without being cruel, and given the tough times we’re in, we can all employ a little more respect and kindness,” wrote a third.

Image: Bell Shakespeare

Mel Gibson called out by West Wing star in scathing op-ed

West Wing actor Joshua Malina has called out Mel Gibson and his employment in show business amid the controversial scandals surrounding the actor.

Malina, who plays Will Bailey on the political drama, has questioned why Gibson is still employed in Hollywood despite his long history of alleged anti-Semitism, homophobia and bigotry.

In a recent op-ed for The Atlantic titled Cancel Mel Gibson, Malina wondered why Hollywood's 'cancel culture' seemingly doesn't apply to Gibson.

"Gibson is a well-known Jew-hater (anti-Semite is too mild). His prejudices are well documented," Malina wrote.

"So my question is, what does a guy have to do these days to get put on Hollywood's no-fly list? I'm a character actor. I tend to take the jobs that come my way. But — and this hurts to write — you couldn't pay me enough to work with Mel Gibson."

Mel Gibson has reportedly been cast in the upcoming John Wick prequel spin-off series titled The Continental, and is also rumoured to be in talks to direct Lethal Weapon 5.

Malina continued, wondering when someone's ignorance and hatred outweighs their impressive resume.

"Now, I love the Lethal Weapon movies (at least the first few). And Danny Glover's a gem," Malina continued.

"But Gibson? Yes, he's a talented man. Many horrible people produce wonderful art. Put me down as an ardent fan of Roald Dahl, Pablo Picasso, and Edith Wharton; can't get enough of what they're selling."

"But these three had the good taste to die. That makes it a lot easier to enjoy their output. Gibson lives. And Tinseltown need not employ him further."

Joshua Malina goes on to say that the point of 'cancel culture' is to hold people accountable for their actions, but those in Hollywood often get a free pass because of their celebrity status.

"If Gibson is welcomed back to direct the latest instalment of this beloved franchise, it may be time to stop publishing think pieces about the power of 'cancel culture,'" Malina wrote.

"Because if he can continue to find big bucks and approbation in Hollywood, cancel culture simply does not exist."

When you need more than a change of scenery

Nurturing to the soul and satisfying to the eye, here’s why the beauty, sustainability, orderliness and safety of Switzerland are magnets for mature travellers.

I’ve just discovered two new words that describe me perfectly. The first is orophile, a lover of mountains. But I’m a certain type of orophile. It’s not enough for me to gaze in wonder at the objects of my adoration from afar – I want to be able to commune with them on an eye-to-summit basis.

That’s why I’ve fallen in love with Switzerland, where, a long time ago, the mountains got together and decided there was little point in being staggeringly-beautiful if no one could admire them close up.

Once the decision was made, Switzerland didn’t pussyfoot around with mere pathway-type access. They blasted tunnels in behemoths like the Bernese trio of the Eiger (3,970m), Mönch (4,099m) and Jungfrau (4,158m) to allow Europe’s highest railway station (3,454m) to be built – more than 100 years ago.

And drilled the 15km Gotthard tunnel through the alps in 1882, making mountain resorts like St Moritz and Zermatt accessible by rail.

And constructed Europe’s highest cablecar to the Klein Matterhorn (3,820m), where visitors can hobnob with the mighty Matterhorn (4,478m) and 20 peaks over 4,000 metres high.

And built the world’s longest aerial cablecar system to the Schilthorn summit where the iconic 007 movie, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, was filmed in the 1960s.

Then there’s walkways like the 107m-long Peak Walk at Les Diablerets, the only suspension bridge in the world to link two mountain summits.

The end product is accessibility on a grand scale to scores of mountain peaks, glaciers, alpine lakes, high-altitude villages and splendid hiking tracks with panoramas stretching across Switzerland.

I delight in the fact that I can arrive at Zurich Airport, jump on a train which, thanks to Switzerland’s superb transport system, connects seamlessly with buses, mountain trains, funiculars, gondolas and cablecars that whisk me to dizzy heights in minutes where I can hike, bike, ski and even wine, dine and sleep in fully-staffed lodges high in the alps.

In compact Switzerland, a country with the densest rail network in the world, no city is further than two hours from the mountains, so daytrips to the alps are easy. Around 9,000 trains criss-cross the 3,000km-long SBB railway network every day.

The timetables and station locations are synched in such a way that travel on multiple modes of transport is effortless. The first time I travelled in Switzerland, I was aghast when I looked at my itinerary, which involved four types of transport and four tight changes in four hours. But it was a breeze.

This ease of travel has much to do with an unassuming slip of paper called the Swiss Travel Pass (STP), which I came to regard as magic. The pass allows unlimited travel on all public transport – trains, boats and buses – with no queuing for tickets or arguing with vending machines. The pass also allows free entry to more than 500 museums.

I always take full advantage of this, ducking into museums all over the country. A favourite is Zermatlantis, where I learned how the modest farming community of Zermatt became a world-famous resort.

The historic paddle steamers on Lake Geneva are also covered by the STP. These graceful belle époche vessels have plied the lake for 100 years, cruising the coast of the Montreux Riviera with its UNESCO World Heritage terraced vineyards at Lavaux, the fairytale mediaeval castle of Chillon and snow-capped Vaudois Alps.

STP holders qualify for a 50 percent discount off most mountain railways ,including the excursion to the summit of Titlis (3,062m) on the world’s first revolving aerial cableway. The panoramic views are jaw-dropping. There’s also the Titlis Cliff Walk – Europe’s highest suspension footbridge – and the Ice Flyer chairlift over Titlis glacier to Glacier Park. Here you can descend ten metres below the surface of the glacier where the ice is up to 5,000 years old. It’s astonishing.

In Switzerland, even the tiniest alpine communities are serviced by public transport. Bright yellow PostAuto buses are lined up beside train stations ready to take you to exquisite villages like Tschiertschen. And in Interlaken, you can ride on environmentally friendly e-buses powered by hydro-electricity. All covered by your STP.

Which brings me to the second word that describes me: I’m viridescent – turning green. The older I get, the more environmentally-conscious I become, which means I feel comfortable travelling in Switzerland. The country is a global leader in sustainability – a fact confirmed by the international Environmental Performance Index (EPI), which ranks Switzerland first in the world.

There are numerous examples of this. Rhaetian Railway, the operators of the world-famous Bernina Express, uses 100 percent hydro-power for their locomotives; the smooth, silent MobiCat on Lake Biel is solar-powered, transporting 40,000 people over 20,000km since 2001; and the Gornergrat Bahn in Zermatt ingeniously generates its own electricity. The energy for its ascents are generated by the descents. Built in 1898, it’s the world’s first fully electrified cog railway.

Furthermore, the entire 5,000km-long national and regional rail network is almost entirely electrified… so in Switzerland, I can indulge in another passion – train travel – with a clear conscience. A veteran of many train journeys in Switzerland, I’ve completed the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland in stages over the past six years. To undertake the entire 1,280km tour in one hit would be injurious to my health.

Every time I travel by train in Switzerland, I end up with a severe case of sensory overload… and a deformed nose from squashing it against the window for hours, drooling at the scenery.

However, after my all-time favourite trip – the Bernina Express from St Moritz to Tirano – my nose was fine. This was because I travelled in an open-air carriage for the entire four-hour journey from the alps and glaciers of Switzerland to the lakes and palm trees of Italy. One of many breath-taking sights is the spectacular, six-span, 142m-long, 65m-high curved Landwasser viaduct. Built in the early 1900s, the viaduct is a highlight of the UNESCO World Heritage 63km-long Albula sector of the trip.

Every journey in Switzerland has left me with a sense of wonder: horizons bristling with peaks jostling for supremacy; pastures so green I’ve rubbed the grass between my fingers to make sure it’s real; cows so pretty the farmers must surely shine their coats; alpine chalets competing for the most red geraniums in their window boxes; wispy waterfalls free-falling in tendrils from gleaming blue-white glaciers; picturesque villages perched on little ledges hundreds of metres above verdant valleys; vivid aqua alpine tarns surrounded by wild flowers; cable-cars bobbing between mountain peaks or gliding vertiginously up sheer cliffs; vineyards perched on narrow terraces that step their way up steep hillsides . . .

The countryside is deeply satisfying to the eye and profoundly nurturing to the soul. And in this chaotic world we live in, the beauty, sustainability, orderliness and safety of Switzerland are magnets for mature travellers… especially a viridescent orophile like me!

* Justine Tyerman travelled courtesy of Switzerland Tourism.

Mel Gibson axed from Chicken Run sequel over anti-Semitism claim

Mel Gibson has said that renewed allegations of anti-Semitic comments levelled against him by actress Winona Ryder are “100% untrue”.

In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, Ryder claimed that the Braveheart star had asked her if she was an “oven dodger” at a party close to 25 years ago, in an apparent reference to her Jewish background.

She told the publication: "We were at a crowded party with one of my good friends, and Mel Gibson was smoking a cigar, and we're all talking and he said to my friend, who's gay, 'Oh wait, am I gonna get Aids?'
"And then something came up about Jews, and he said, 'You're not an oven dodger, are you?'"

The 48-year-old then revealed that Gibson attempted to reach out later on to apologise.

A representative of Gibson said: "This is 100% untrue. She lied about it over a decade ago, when she talked to the press, and she's lying about it now.

"Also, she lied about him trying to apologise to her back then. He did reach out to her, many years ago, to confront her about her lies and she refused to address it with him."

After Gibson vehemently denied the accusations against him, Ryder mentioned she was with the late makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin at the time, and said the altercation remains a “painful and vivid memory”.

She said: "I believe in redemption and forgiveness and hope that Mr Gibson has found a healthy way to deal with his demons, but I am not one of them.

"Around 1996, my friend Kevyn Aucoin and I were on the receiving end of his hateful words. It is a painful and vivid memory for me. Only by accepting responsibility for our behaviour in this life, can we make amends and truly respect each other, and I wish him well on this lifelong journey."

Ryder first accused Gibson in 2010 when she gave an interview to GQ magazine, suggesting Gibson was referencing the gas chambers used by Nazis during the holocaust.

In 2006, Gibson was recorded delivering a controversial anti-Semitic rant after a drink-driving arrest.

After the recent allegations, the 64-year-old has been axed from his upcoming film, the sequel to Chicken Run.

Pay the piper: Authorities finally move on cancer fraud Belle Gibson

Authorities have moved in on cancer fraud Belle Gibson after a warrant was issued to raid her home to seize her assets, according to The Daily Mail.

Gibson has previously claimed that she wasn’t “in a position” to pay back her $410,000 fine six months ago, but the warrant executed a “seize and sell” warrant on her home, which means that her assets have been seized to pay back what she owes.

She has been living free and seemingly happy since her fine for duping Australians was handed back in September 2017.

The amount Gibson owes has since ballooned to more than $500,000 as this figure includes fines, interests and other penalties.

Consumer Affairs Victoria quietly filed for the warrant at the Federal Court in late December, which was issued this week and officers descended on her home for retrieval for the assets.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for Consumer Affairs Victoria said:

“Sheriff's Officers visited an address in Northcote today to execute a warrant of seizure and sale on items belonging to Ms Gibson.

“Consumer Affairs Victoria is committed to recovering the debt Ms Gibson owes the Victorian public and will continue to pursue Ms Gibson until it is repaid in full.”

It is unknown what was seized from Gibson’s property, but her mysterious finances continue to be of interest to the court system.

In court, Gibson explained that she could not afford the fine.

“I'm not in a position to pay a $410,000 fine at this time”, she said.

However, Carl Moller, who was the barrister for Consumer Affairs Victoria, told Gibson that she had spent $91,000 over a two-year period. This was spent on clothing, cosmetics, accessories and a shocking $45,000 was listed as “discretionary spending”.

Moller asked if Gibson had money to pay off the fine.

“Can you find some money to pay off the fine?” he asked.

“No,” Gibson replied.

Moller also was curious as to who deposited $1,600 as this funded a trip overseas to Bali.

“Is it seriously your evidence that $1600 was deposited into your account, in three deposits in the space of about a week, and you don't know who deposited it?” Moller asked.

“I'd have to speculate and I'm not willing to do that,” Gibson replied.

Earlier this year, A Current Affair revealed that Gibson had gone on a trip to South Africa, which was met with fury from the public.

“Don’t you think it’s more important to be paying back that fine rather than going on an overseas trip?” a reporter asked Gibson upon her return to Australia. Gibson said nothing.

Photo credits: Gotcha Belle!: A Current Affair 2019

Cancer fraud Belle Gibson spotted on school run despite not paying back $410k in fines

Cancer fraud Belle Gibson has stepped out months after “locking herself away” after being ordered to explain why she hasn’t paid off her $410,000 in fines.

Gibson was fined $410,000 for defrauding hard-working Aussies by pretending she cured cancer through healthy living. She was found guilty of five breaches of consumer laws.

However, despite the warning and the substantial amount of fines to pay off, Gibson remains a free person in the community and dropped off her child at school.

Gibson quickly became annoyed when she realised a photographer was taking her photo and indignantly raised her mobile phone to take pictures of the photographer.

She quickly made headlines after falsely claiming she had brain cancer and healed herself with natural remedies, giving those who legitimately suffered from cancer new hope for finding a cure for their disease.

She lied to well meaning consumers who supported her Whole Pantry app as well as book sales as she said she would donate money to various charities as well as a boy with inoperable brain cancer, but never ended up donating the money.

Gibson received $440,500 from sales from her book and her app, but only donated around $10,000 to charity.

What angers people more is that despite claiming that she has no money to pay off the funds, she has been seen going on holidays to Bali and Africa and has spent $90,000 over two years.

Cameron Miller, who runs the Shaun Miller foundation said that the damage Gibson has done is “wrong”.

“I just think it's disgusting that she's taken advantage of these people,” he said to The Daily Mail.

“She's out there parading like she's Lady Muck. I just think it's wrong.”

Miller also said that she was giving a bad name to reputable charities.

“When you have people like this it makes it hard for other foundations to convince people to donate money when you've got shonks out there,” he said.

“I just can't get over it ... she's laughing at all these people. She should have been prosecuted (by police). She's a fraudster. She is a con-woman and she should have been prosecuted to the whole letter of the law but she just thinks it's funny.”

While Gibson was grilled in the Federal Court earlier this year over why she hasn’t paid the fines, she claimed she was “not in a position to pay a $410,000 fine at this time”.

Alarm bells: ALDI investigating "deadly" mistake

ALDI is investigating a snack product sold at stores across Australia after complaints emerged that the item was incorrectly labelled.

A Victorian mother lodged a formal complaint with the supermarket chain after she bought a packet of “Natural Almonds” from ALDI’s homebrand Oh So Natural at a Melbourne store, only to find later that it was filled with peanuts.

In a post shared on a Facebook allergy group, the woman wrote the “package states almond though it’s packed with peanuts”.

Fellow shoppers expressed their outrage at the mispackaged peanut product, saying that the mistake could have grave consequences for unsuspecting customers with a peanut allergy.

“That’s a recall right there,” one wrote.

Another commented, “Deadly.”

An ALDI Australia spokesperson told news.com.au that the Food Authority had been alerted after the customer “claiming to have purchased a mislabelled product” reached out to the retailer.

“As the product is labelled ‘almonds’ and it is claimed to contain peanuts, we are moving at pace to validate this claim,” the spokesperson said.

“Since receiving this customer contact, our immediate action has been the review of all products in our stores and the stock in our warehouses.”

The supermarket said they have not discovered another case.

The item in question has not yet been recalled. The spokesperson said a recall will be “immediately” announced if any further evidence to substantiate the woman’s claim is found.

Former editor opens up about Belle Gibson: “We’re all still being duped”

A former magazine editor has come forward about her experience with the renowned Belle Gibson.

The Australian blogger catapulted to fame for her “clean eating” methods that she claimed healed her multiple cancers.

In June 2009, the wellness “health guru” announced she had been diagnosed with malignant brain cancer, admitting she had between six weeks to four months to live.

Months later, Gibson claimed she had completely healed herself of her cancer and in August 2013 launched an app to help others heal from their health problems – reportedly garnering over 200,000 downloads within the first month.

An investigation later revealed Belle had made false claims about donating portions of her income to charity and had completely fabricated her cancer and health conditions – as well as her age and family background.

View this post on Instagram

Ahhh Belle Gibson is back in the news.
