AI recruitment tools are “automated pseudoscience” says Cambridge researchers

AI is set to bring in a whole new world in a huge range of industries. Everything from art to medicine is being overhauled by machine learning.

But researchers from the University of Cambridge have published a paper in Philosophy & Technology to call out AI used to recruit people for jobs and boost workplace diversity – going so far as to call them an “automated pseudoscience”.

“We are concerned that some vendors are wrapping ‘snake oil’ products in a shiny package and selling them to unsuspecting customers,” said co-author Dr Eleanor Drage, a researcher in AI ethics.

“By claiming that racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination can be stripped away from the hiring process using artificial intelligence, these companies reduce race and gender down to insignificant data points, rather than systems of power that shape how we move through the world.”

Recent years have seen the emergence of AI tools marketed as an answer to lack of diversity in the workforce. This can be anything from use of chatbots and resume scrapers, to line up prospective candidates, through to analysis software for video interviews.

Those behind the technology claim it cancels out human biases against gender and ethnicity during recruitment, instead using algorithms that read vocabulary, speech patterns, and even facial micro-expressions, to assess huge pools of job applicants for the right personality type and ‘culture fit’.

But AI isn’t very good at removing human biases. To train a machine-learning algorithm, you have to first put in lots and lots of past data. In the past for example, AI tools have discounted women all together in fields where more men were traditionally hired. In a system created by Amazon, resumes were discounted if they included the word ‘women’s’ – like in a “women’s debating team” and downgraded graduates of two all-women colleges. Similar problems occur with race.

The Cambridge researchers suggest that even if you remove ‘gender’ or ‘race’ as distinct categories, the use of AI may ultimately increase uniformity in the workforce. This is because the technology is calibrated to search for the employer’s fantasy ‘ideal candidate’, which is likely based on demographically exclusive past results.

The researchers actually went a step further, and worked with a team of Cambridge computer science undergraduates, to build an AI tool modelled on the technology. You can check it out here.

The tool demonstrates how arbitrary changes in facial expression, clothing, lighting and background can give radically different personality readings – and so could make the difference between rejection and progression.

“While companies may not be acting in bad faith, there is little accountability for how these products are built or tested,” said Drage.

“As such, this technology, and the way it is marketed, could end up as dangerous sources of misinformation about how recruitment can be ‘de-biased’ and made fairer.”

The researchers suggest that these programs are a dangerous example of ‘technosolutionism’: turning to technology to provide quick fixes for deep-rooted discrimination issues that require investment and changes to company culture.

“Industry practitioners developing hiring AI technologies must shift from trying to correct individualized instances of ’bias’ to considering the broader inequalities that shape recruitment processes,” the team write in their paper.

“This requires abandoning the ‘veneer of objectivity’ that is grafted onto AI systems, so that technologists can better understand their implication — and that of the corporations within which they work — in the hiring process.”

<!-- Start of tracking content syndication. What your music choice says about your personality

A study has found the link between an individual’s music preferences and distinctive personality traits in music fans around the world.

The research, conducted by the University of Cambridge, found that those who like Ed Sheeran’s latest album are likely to be extroverted and confident, with their findings consistent across multiple countries.

Neurotic traits were found in global fans of Nirvana’s grunge hit Smells Like Teen Spirit, while most people will tend to sing Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's Shallow, regardless of personality.

The study, which involved more than 350,000 people from over 50 countries, found that conscientious people are unlikely to like the music from Rage Against the Machine, while international borders could not stop people from playing David Bowie’s Space Oddity.

Leader of the study Dr David Greenberg, who is also a musician, said the research shows an international common ground through music.

He said, “People may be divided by geography, language and culture, but if an introvert in one part of the world likes the same music as introverts elsewhere, that suggests that music could be a very powerful bridge.”

Dr Greenberg was surprised by the results of how neuroticism is expressed through a musical outlet, expecting people would prefer a slower, more sad song to express their discomfort.

However, according to Dr Greenberg, “Actually, on average, they seem to prefer more intense musical styles, which perhaps reflects inner angst and frustration.”

“That was surprising but people use music in different ways — some might use it for catharsis, others to change their mood.”

Today, people are using music as a way to signal their personality and so, the study argues, there is potential to use music as a way to bridge gaps between different social groups through the common language of music.

Duchess of Cambridge wears $3.80 earrings for her first royal engagement of the year

Image: 9Honey

Image: 9Honey

The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out showcasing her signature mix of high and low end fashion in a chic return to work for the new year.

Kate Middleton visited The Foundling Museum in London on Wednesday wearing a teal blue coat over the top of an all-navy ensemble.

But her standout accessory was the royal's $3.80 gold earrings from UK store Accessorize.

The mini hammered doorknocker hoop earrings from the high street chain (similar to Lovisa) were originally £7 ($13.20) but were in the recent sale, dropping in price to £2.10 ($3.80) — needless to say, they're now sold out.

The only other jewels that Kate could be seen wearing was her heirloom sapphire and diamond engagement ring, which previously belonged to Princess Diana, and her wedding band.

The Duchess, who celebrated her 40th birthday earlier this month, wasn't just cost-efficient in her jewellery department. Even the tailored blue coat has been seen before, with the Duchess last wearing it in January 2020, during a visit to LEYF Stockwell Gardens Nursery & Pre-School in London.

The Duchess also sported a turtle neck knit and navy suede heels, both of which are understood to be items worn to previous engagements and events.

Kate's return to work for the new year wouldn't be complete without her signature bouncy blowdry, which bobbed as the royal arrived at The Foundling Museum with husband Prince William.

The organisation was set up in 2019 to help the homeless and people living in poverty in Burnley and the surrounding areas. Speaking to a number of volunteers and staff, the couple heard about their motivations for working with Church on the Street.

Charity owner Pastor Mick is now in discussions with local authorities, external support agencies and the NHS with the aim of providing further support for people who are struggling with their mental health.

‘Curt not caring' - Will and Kate’s birthday tribute for Harry

Prince Harry turned 37 this week on September 15, but the birthday message his brother, Prince William, and his wife Kate, was about as succinct as it could possibly get.

The message from Prince William and Kate – on their Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Twitter and Instagram accounts read: ‘Happy Birthday Prince Harry!’

The message was paired with a photo of the prince and a balloon emoji.

Happy Birthday Prince Harry! 🎈 pic.twitter.com/Lw1nR9wNDl
— The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (@KensingtonRoyal) September 15, 2021

Royal experts have been quick to label the birthday message as ‘curt’ rather than ‘caring,’ and pointed out it shows there are still tensions between the siblings which are yet to ease.

Royal author Duncan Larcombe told The Sun, the Cambridges "curt" message "only serves as proof the ice between the brothers has still not thawed".

"Short of ignoring the Duke of Sussex's 37th landmark completely, their social media post was the bare minimum from a couple who once welcomed Harry as their official Royal gooseberry," Larcombe explained.

While Prince Harry celebrated his birthday in the US, with his wife Meghan Markle and their two children, Prince William and Kate Middleton sent the birthday message from their home in London in the UK.

Image: Twitter

Take a look at Princess Charlotte now

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge shared a sweet photo on Instagram on the weekend of their six-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, cradling a delicate, orange and black butterfly.

In the post, her loving parents wrote: “We wanted to share these beautiful Peacock and Red Admiral butterflies as part of Big #ButterflyCount initiative taking place across the UK.”

The initiative is run by Butterfly Conservation, a British charity which is trying to find out more about the health of the environment by asking people to count the number of butterflies they see.

On their Instagram post, Prince William and Kate wrote: “@savebutterflies are encouraging us all to count these incredible creatures because not only are they beautiful creatures to be around but they are also extremely important. Butterflies are vital parts of the ecosystem as both pollinators and components of the food chain. Hopefully you can beat last year’s total, @savebutterflies.”

The particular butterfly which Charlotte is holding is called a red admiral butterfly and it’s found in Europe, North and South America and Asia. It’s the most popular butterfly in urban areas, according to the US Forest Service.

While many royal watchers and fans enjoyed seeing this rare photo of Charlotte with the beautiful butterfly, some noticed ways in which she’s beginning to resemble her royal relatives.

“She looks like queen Elizabeth,” observed one person.

“The mini edition of Kate.... charlotte is so pretty,” another wrote.

“Charlotte looks so beautiful,” added another. “She is the female version of William. Daddy must be very proud of his little girl.”

This isn’t the first time Charlotte has been enjoying the beauty of the natural world around her. Last year, Charlotte and her brothers, Prince George and Prince Louis, asked some animal-related questions to the well-known British environmentalist, David Attenborough, in a very cute video.

At the time, Charlotte was five years old and she said: “I like spiders. Do you like spiders too?”

Attenborough answered: “I love spiders, I’m so glad you like them! I think they’re wonderful things. Why is it that people are so frightened of them? I think it’s because they’ve actually got eight legs, which is much more than us. And if you’ve got eight legs, you can move in any direction, so you can never be quite sure which way that spider is going to go.”

As well, in May of this year we were able to see a new photo of princess Charlotte as her family celebrated her sixth birthday. The photo was taken by the duchess who has taken to being the unofficial family photographer, snapping beautiful photos of her children over the years.

Image: Instagram

Fashion Queen! Duchess Kate's sweet surprise for school kids

The ever-fashionable Duchess Kate surprised a group of local school kids on Tuesday during a visit to the National History Museum in London.

Kate, who is never short on producing a classy royal get-up, was pictured looking dressed-down and chic while meeting with kids to partake in nature activities including spider-making, interactive story-telling and fun exercise in the Wildlife Garden of the museum.

"I'm going to call my spider 'cuddles'," Kate joked with the kids as they made their spiders.

The royal, who is a mum of three herself, even pulled out a sweet treat for the children to taste from – a pot of honey made from the bees that live at the Cambridges country home in Norfolk, Anmer Hall.

"Would you like to try some?" the Duchess asked the kids.

"I've got one spoon each. This came specially from my beehive.

"See if it tastes the same as at home. Does it taste like honey from the shops? Does it taste like flowers?"

The 39-year-old may have chosen a casual outfit for the special day out, but she still looked as regal as ever in straight cut blue jeans, a $3630 gathered grain de poudre wool Chloé blazer and Vega trainers.

Image: Getty

Major change for Kate Middleton when Prince Charles becomes King

As members move up the ranks within the royal family, titles change. And for Kate Middleton – this could not be truer.

Prince Charles’ destiny is to be the King of England one day, and then eventually Prince William.

However, it's not just the title of the royal princes that will change, but also their children and their wives too.

Kate Middleton became the Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn and Lady Carrickfergus when she married Prince William, thanks to Queen Elizabeth, who gifted the titles.

When Charles becomes the King of England, though, Prince William will move up the ranks to become Prince of Wales, along with Kate who will technically become the Princess of Wales.

It is a title many still use to refer to the late Princess Diana, who held the name before her tragic death in 1997.

Camilla Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall, was meant to also receive the title when she married Prince Charles. However, she chose not to – in an attempt to show Diana respect in her death.

While the day William becomes King seems much too far away to think about, it doesn’t hurt to mention that there are many titles Duchess Kate could choose.

While she is likely to become Queen Catherine, it is also just as possible her official title could be Queen Consort – which means the wife of a reigning monarch that married into the royal family and does not possess royal blood.

Image: Getty Images

Resurfaced photo disputes Meghan Markle's "naive" claim

A photo of Meghan Markle posing with her now sister-in-law, Duchess Kate, long before they personally met has gone viral once again.

The resurfaced photograph has made its way to the light again as royal watchers look for ways to cast doubt on the claim that the Duchess said she was “naive” to the duties of royal life before she joined the family.

In her shocking interview with Oprah Winfrey back in March, the Duchess of Sussex admitted she “didn’t grow up knowing much about the royal family” or the pressures of the tabloid press.

However, the picture from 2014, taken two years before Meghan met Prince Harry, has given some the argument that the royal knew much more than she let on.

Especially since, in 2019, she told interviewer Tom Bradbury: “… my British friends said to me, ‘I’m sure he’s great.
