Century-old drawings on school chalkboards uncovered

A fascinating glimpse into school life almost a century ago has been uncovered in a high school in Oklahoma. During a renovation to Emerson High School in Oklahoma City, a team of workers discovered chalkboards covered with images, equations, and calendars from 1917.

Speaking with The Huffington Post, Sherry Read, one of the school’s teachers, described the exciting discovery as “mind-boggling.” Uncovered beneath the school’s current chalkboards, the old boards featured turkeys, pilgrims, and ships, indicating that they were covered up around the Thanksgiving holiday.

It’s unclear why the chalkboards were covered up without being cleaned, but it’s possible it was done as a time capsule. The boards are currently under a temporary cover while the renovations are completed, with plans to preserve and display the boards so students can enjoy the window to the past when they return to school later this year.
