Elderly driver hailed a hero amid fatal bus tragedy

An elderly driver has been hailed a hero for saving lives after getting caught up in a horror crash between a Greyhound bus and a car towing a caravan.

The accident left three women dead and 27 other passengers injured, after the coach allegedly veered onto the opposite side of the Bruce Highway at Gumlu, in north Queensland at around 11am on Sunday.

The coach was travelling between Brisbane and Townsville, with 33 people onboard when it collided with a caravan towed by a 4WD.

The elderly couple, who were in the 4WD were miraculously not injured.

Witnesses have praised the elderly male driver for his quick-thinking skills, when he drove his vehicle out of the way of the oncoming bus - which saved the lives of people driving behind him.

"He was a hero for his actions," Janice Beavis told the Daily Mail.

“They [the elderly couple] were behaving safely. The bus hit the van, the driver [of the 4WD] was trying to get away.

“He saved himself and his wife and the mum and three girls travelling behind him.”

56-year-old Townsville woman, Emma ‘Alli’ Sailor, and two German women aged in their 20s and 30s sadly passed away in the crash.

Four people remain in hospital, including two men in their 20s who are fighting for their lives, and two other men, aged 27 and 51, who are in stable conditions.

The bus was reportedly running behind schedule, leaving Rockhampton at 2am instead of the planned departure time at 12:45.

The speed limit at the section of the highway where the accident occurred was 100km/h.

Detectives are investigating whether fatigue could have played a role in the crash.

“We haven’t determined any factors that have contributed to the crash at this stage, but certainly a crash of this nature, involving this many people, is a very significant, very tragic incident for us,” Police Superintendent Graeme Paine said at a press conference on Sunday.

Anyone who may have seen the crash or have dashcam footage have been urged to contact police.

On Monday morning, Police Superintendent Paine said that more witnesses will be interviewed to determine the cause of the crash.

“We’ve collected a significant amount of evidence from the scene,” he said.

“As we process that evidence and interview further witnesses, we anticipate getting a clearer picture of exactly how it occurred."

Image: news.com.au

What the fox! Driver finds wild animal trapped in his car

A motorist has shared the startling moment a fox got trapped in the front grill of his car, after he accidentally hit the wild animal while travelling at 80km/h.

While driving down a country road in South Australia on Saturday night, the man behind the wheel said he was shocked when he felt something slam into the car.

When he later checked the vehicle, he was astonished to find the angry fox trying to break free from behind the front grill of the car.

“Y’all thought you had a bad day,” he can be heard saying while filming the animal furiously biting the front grill in an attempt to escape.

In a series of videos posted to TikTok, the man documented the fox's attempts at escape, before informing his followers that he had enlisted the help of a local vet to help free the animal.

“Took him to the vet, they sedated him and we got him out safely, the poor guy,” he said, adding he was glad — and impressed — the fox was alive after such a high-speed impact.

Throughout his videos, many took to the comments to offer their advice to free the fox, as one person suggested "popping the lid", with the driver explaining that he did but “couldn’t even see him through the bonnet”.

The saga has been viewed more than 400,000 times in the past 24 hours, with numerous people saying they were stunned the fox wasn’t seriously injured. “How does this even happen?” one person wondered.

“What in the fox is going on here!” another joked, while others pondered how the man would explain the incident to his insurance company.

“Insurance would never believe you if you didn’t have that video,” someone else added.

The father of one of the victims of the deadly Hunter Valley bus crash has spoken out, following news that the driver struck a plea deal.

On Wednesday, Brett Andrew Button entered into a plea agreement, which saw 10 manslaughter charges be dropped against the man who was behind the wheel when the bus crashed.

He then pled guilty to 10 counts of dangerous driving causing death, nine of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm and 16 of furious driving causing bodily harm.

After news of the plea deal broke, the father of one of the victims shared how the downgrade in charges felt like "more than a kick in the teeth".

"It reopens wounds and triggers and it evokes, obviously, some anger, but I'm trying to be balanced and stick with the facts and hopefully we can achieve some positive outcomes," Adam Bray told A Current Affair.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Charges dropped for Hunter Valley bus driver

The driver responsible for the Hunter Valley bus crash that claimed the lives of 10 people has had major charges dropped as he faced court.

Brett Andrew Button, 59, faced Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday, as all 10 manslaughter charges were dropped as part of a deal struck with prosecutors.

As part of the deal, Button pled guilty to a string of other charges, including 10 counts of dangerous driving causing death, nine counts of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm and 16 counts of furious driving causing bodily harm.

Another 25 charges of causing bodily harm by misconduct were also withdrawn.

He was not yet required to enter pleas to back-up charges including negligent driving causing death.

Since his first arrest, Button had been on bail after initially being granted release due to mental health and wellbeing concerns should he be kept in custody.

However, he has now been remanded into custody on remand to await sentencing.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) declined to comment on the reason for the manslaughter charges being withdrawn.

Mr Button was arrested after allegedly losing control of a bus that was transporting 35 wedding guests to a reception in the NSW Hunter Valley.

The bus rolled over at a roundabout near Greta, killing 10 people and injuring 25 others.

Mother and daughter Nadene and Kyah McBride, Kyah’s boyfriend Kane Symons, husband and wife Andrew and Lynan Scott, Zach Bray, Angus Craig, Darcy Bulman, Tori Cowburn and Rebecca Mullen all died in the impact.

Button has previously apologised for the incident, telling reporters outside court in March he was “devastated by what has occurred” and that he was “truly and deeply sorry”.

Best friends on the way to a wedding identified in fatal crash

The best friends who were on their way to a wedding when they were struck in a fatal crash in Brisbane have been identified.

Lily Galbraith, 24, and Emma McLean, 23, were travelling in a silver sedan through the Legacy Way tunnel on Wednesday at 3pm when they were hit by a black Audi.

Ms Galbraith, a South Australian nurse who was originally from the Northern Territory, died in the crash, while Ms McLean is still fighting for her life in hospital after suffering critical injuries.

The driver of the Audi, who also died in the crash, has been identified as former police officer Bruce Daley.

After the Audi collided with the sedan, police believe the impact of the crash then pushed the sedan into a small truck, causing serious injuries to the driver of the truck.

Mr Daley, who was medically retired from the Queensland Police Service in December 2014, had posted online about relationship struggles and loneliness over several years.

Inspector Hansel said speed would be a “focus” of the investigation, with claims the Audi hit speeds of up to 200km/h before the crash.

The Nurses and Midwives Memorial Page Australia paid tribute to Ms Galbraith on Thursday.

“Rest in peace, Lily. Thank you for your service. Condolences to your family, friends and colleagues,” the post read.

“All the very best for Emma and sending love to her family as they wait to see how her progress is. We are also thinking of the bride, groom and any wedding guests also mourning.”

Sir Richard Branson in serious bike crash

Richard Branson, the adventurous billionaire and founder of Virgin Group, is no stranger to pushing the limits. However, his latest escapade – a biking mishap on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands – left him with shocking injuries, adding to a long list of near-death experiences throughout his life.

In a recent Instagram post, Branson shared the aftermath of his bike crash, recounting how he flew off his bike after hitting a pothole on the picturesque island.

The accident resulted in severe cuts on his elbow and a haematoma on his hip. Remarkably, despite the intensity of the crash, Branson escaped without any broken bones, though the same could not be said for his biking companion, Alex Wilson, who also took a spill but thankfully emerged relatively unscathed.

"Took quite a big tumble while cycling in Virgin Gorda a little while ago!" Branson wrote. "I hit a pothole and crashed hard, resulting in another hematoma on my hip and a nasty cut elbow, but amazingly nothing broken.

"We were cycling with Alex Wilson, who fell after me, but thankfully he was ok as well. I’m counting myself very lucky, and thankful for keeping myself active and healthy."

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Richard Branson (@richardbranson)

This incident is just the latest in a series of biking accidents for Branson. In 2018, during an endurance charity race, he feared he had broken his back after another biking mishap. Similarly, in 2016, while cycling with his children in the British Virgin Islands, he had a terrifying headfirst collision with the road, leaving him fearing for his life.

Branson's penchant for adventure has led him into numerous dangerous situations over the years. From surviving a sinking fishing boat during his honeymoon to crash-landing a microlight aircraft he didn't know how to fly, his life reads like a catalogue of adrenalin-fuelled escapades. Even the inaugural test flight of Virgin Atlantic in 1984 wasn't without drama, as an engine exploded mid-air.

Skydiving accidents, near misses with hot air balloons, and daring stunts like wing-walking on a Virgin Atlantic plane or jumping off the Palms Casino in Las Vegas further illustrate Branson's willingness to embrace risk in pursuit of thrills.

Despite the multitude of close calls, Branson maintains a resilient spirit, viewing each brush with danger as an opportunity for growth and appreciation for life. His Instagram post following the bike crash in Virgin Gorda captures this sentiment, as he reflects on his luck and gratitude for staying active and healthy.

For Branson, it appears that the thrill of the unknown far outweighs the comfort of caution. As he aptly puts it, "After all, the brave may not live forever but the cautious do not live at all."

Image: Instagram

He loved her so much and she doesn’t love anyone else as much as she loved Kev.”

The heartbreaking update was shared to the family’s GoFundMe page yesterday, with it already raising over $119,000.

“Leah would like to thank everyone from the bottom of her heart who has donated, helped, sent messages to help her and the family at this time,” Mrs. Malligan’s mum Jodie French said.

“She and the Malligan family now has the awful decision of when to turn off his life support.”

“We are sending all our love and prayers for strength at this time to our daughter and Kevin’s family," she added before thanking everyone who has donated to their family.

Images: 7NEWS

"Impossibly sad": P-plater jailed over fatal crash

A southwest Sydney community is reeling after Tyrell Edwards was sentenced for causing the deaths of five children in a fiery crash last year.

Edwards, 20, was driving recklessly at speeds of 147km/h in the suburb of Buxton when he crashed into two trees and struck five teenagers.

Lily Van De Putte, Gabby McLennan, Summer Williams, all aged 14, Tyrese Bechard, 15, and Antonio Desisto, 16, were all killed in the devastating incident.

Appearing in Campbelltown District Court on his 20th birthday, Edwards sentenced to 12 years in prison, and will be eligible for parole in seven years, after pleading guilty to five counts of aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death at a speed more than 45km/h over the limit.

The judge described the deaths of the five victims as “tragic and impossibly sad”.

“The loss of these five young people diminishes us all,” he said.

“Their deaths were completely avoidable and responsibility for them lies squarely at the feet of the offender.”

Gasps were heard in the courtroom as the sentence was read, with families of the victims sharing their disappointment at the sentencing.

Speaking outside court on Friday, family members of three of the teenagers hit out at the “unfair” sentence.

Samantha McLennan said her heart “dropped” as she heard the ruling, while Exavan Desisto said he was “speechless”.

“I knew the outcome wouldn’t be spectacular but to hear it was a big shock,” he said. “The justice system absolutely stinks.”

John Van De Putte said he expected the sentence to be low, but felt it did not match the crime.

“There’s five lives lost. Seven years in jail,” he said. “You’d get more if you killed someone with a baseball bat

Mr Van De Putte had previously told the court there was “no excuse” for Edwards, a licensed driver, to have driven so recklessly and endangered the lives of his underage passengers.

“No matter what you get, it will not bring back the five lives,” he told the 20-year-old.
