Track your spending, use cash and DIY gifts: how to keep your costs down this Christmas

Angelique Nadia Sweetman McInnes, CQUniversity Australia

Australians are expected to spend more this Christmas than last, with spending projected to rise to A$69.7 billion. This is a 2.7% increase on what we spent last year on gifts, food and other treats for ourselves and others.

This is a lot at a time when many people are experiencing mortgage stress and high inflation. But by employing smart budgeting and spending strategies we can enjoy a festive Christmas season without huge financial stress.

Know how much you are spending

Being aware of what you are spending is important. So you don’t spend beyond your means, you need to decide what you are going to buy and track what you spend.

Using budgeting tools in your banking app will help you monitor your spending. Your bank’s app or a variety of budgeting apps, can also help you find deals and stick to your financial goals.

Research shows spending decreases when you use an online budgeting app by 15%.

Christmas budgeting means setting clear limits, like a gift allowance for each person of, for example, under $10, $25, $50 or $100. This helps us stay on track. Before shopping, we should also ask ourselves: “Is this worth buying?” or “Do I really need this?”.

How to bag a bargain

About 63% of Australian consumers say they start their shopping in November, before the last-minute push to fill the Christmas stockings. This enables them to take advantage of the Black Friday sales on now and Cyber Monday, next Monday.

Online research can uncover decent bargains to lower Christmas spending. Or you could wait until the Boxing Day sales to buy discounted gifts for people you don’t see until after December 25.

The post-Christmas sales are also good for stocking up on heavily discounted crackers and decorations for next year.

Most Australian shoppers (89%) are combining online (websites, mobile apps, social media) with physical in-store shopping. Major online retailers such as Amazon, eBay, and The Iconic (69%) are now more popular than department stores (59%).

There are also thrift and discount stores which offer affordable gifts while using their income to help those in need.

By using the internet to compare prices and set price alerts for goods you want to buy, you are more likely to get the best deals. Take time to search for store discounts. Using loyalty programs, coupons, promo codes, and free shipping also helps keep money in your pocket.

Why cash at Christmas is better

The federal government’s decision last week to require businesses to accept cash, not just credit or debit cards, also has benefits for saving. Cash purchases encourage you to spend wisely, set your spending limit, and prevent you from overspending, or paying interest and fees on cards.

There is also the old “cash envelope system” used for centuries and popularised in the 1990s to help curb spending. This sees cash divided into envelopes, each labelled for a specific expense (for example, gifts for A, B, C). Once the money in the envelope is gone, nothing more can be spent.

One way to help boost your Christmas budget; while simultaneously decluttering, your home is to sell items you no longer use. There are numerous online sites and bricks and mortar stores where this can be done.

Saving money with DIY

In 2024, Australians will spend an average of $660 per shopper on gifts, with popular choices including clothing and shoes, books, and gift cards.

However, it’s not necessary to buy all your gifts or Christmas decorations. Consider making affordable handmade gifts to add a personal touch. There are demonstration videos online showing you how to re-purpose old items, bake homemade festive treats, create a special moments photo album or scrapbook.

Mix Epsom salts, essential oils and dried flowers to create relaxing bath salts or scrubs. Use natural pine cones or salt dough to make ornaments. Make wreaths using pine branches, holly or dried oranges. Sew fabric garlands to place on the tree, fireplace or mantle.

Instead of buying multiple extravagant presents for each person, try doing a Secret Santa. This is the low-cost tradition where everyone buys only one gift for one recipient who is chosen using an online tool. Gifts are then given anonymously.

Festive food

Festive food spending is projected to be $28 billion, up 4.2%, this year, contributing to the overall increase in expected total Christmas spending.

To save on food expenses, asks guests to bring a dish to share. Or celebrate Christmas with an economical picnic or BBQ, weather permitting.

Get creative with food leftovers to make meals and reduce the amount of food waste, while stretching your wallet further once Christmas has come and gone.

Managing costs, avoiding debt

Sticking to your Christmas budget can feel rewarding. If you do overspend, reflect on why, and adjust your plan. If needed, explore debt options, like credit cards or personal loans, but only as a last resort.

Thoughtful planning will help you manage your costs, while enjoying the festive season. After all, the true spirit of Christmas is about creating memories and enjoying time with loved ones, not about overspending.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Four ways to tell the designer fashion items worth investing in from the ones that aren’t

Naomi Braithwaite, Nottingham Trent University

Whether it’s aspiring to the “quiet luxury” or “old money” looks taking over TikTok, or cringing at the “ludicrously capacious bag” scene in the last season of Succession, designer clothes and accessories have been a hot topic in 2023. But with continued sales growth in designer fashion, and concerns about shopping more sustainably, it’s worth considering investing your money in products that will last longer.

Sales in luxury fashion have increased significantly since the pandemic. Louis Vuitton, for example, has increased its sales from 2019. And British luxury brand, Burberry, reported sales growth to be 86% higher in the year following the pandemic (though there has been another dip in sales more recently).

The rise of athleisure in fashion and designer collaborations such as Manolo Blahnik for Birkenstock, Gucci x Adidas and Burberry x Supreme have made luxury more available. But prices are still high, so how can you know whether a purchase will stand the test of time and become an investment piece or a fashion flop? Here are four key factors to consider when making a designer purchase.

1. Resale value

An expensive purchase price may not guarantee that your product will hold its value. A key factor to consider is what the resale value of your purchase will be, as this will indicate the item’s investment potential.

A fashion investment piece tends to be a luxury product with a higher price ticket. Prices of luxury fashion have increased over the last decade. Chanel bags, for example, have almost doubled in price. Chanel’s iconic medium flap bag has increased from £7,550 in 2022 to £8,530 in 2023 and is considered to be one of the most covetable designs in the resale market.

Similarly, Hermès’ famous Birkin and Kelly bag designs, renowned for their quality, are undoubtedly investment pieces. Despite the high price ticket, Birkin bags are in demand. They are the most collectable and classic of designer bags, with an average retail price of USD$10,000 (£8,237), which can double in the resale market.

Luxury fashion resaler Vestiaire, along with online marketplaces like eBay, are useful sources for researching and calculating what the value of your purchase will be in the resale market. While designer bags can hold their value post-purchase, clothes can be less straightforward and will depend on the other following factors.

2. Quality and style

A 2023 report has stated that the overt use of logos in recent years, from brands such as Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton, has been replaced by an interest in quiet luxury.

Quiet luxury means more simplistic, classic and timeless styling. The focus on exquisite fabrics and design gives a sense of fashion that is not disposable and durable. A cashmere sweater from Lorna Piana may cost over £1,700 but its quality and classic styling will ensure it’s an investment piece that transcends fashion trend cycle.

Consideration of fabrics, styling and design aesthetic are all key in ensuring your fashion investment has longevity.

3. Brand authenticity

Heritage and authenticity can secure the value of fashion purchases. Brands that have a strong heritage – that have been around and respected for a long time – are better investment pieces, particularly in the categories of watches, jewellery and handbags. Rolex watches are renowned as investment pieces, with models that are most rare commanding the higher appreciation values.

In the realm of clothing, Burberry’s iconic trench coat – which has remained largely untouched in design terms for over 100 years – has been reported to be a good wardrobe investment by Vogue. The trench’s timeless design, alongside its long history, has secured its place as an investment product.

However, when it comes to making the purchase it is important to go with Burberry’s original design, rather than the fashion-led versions whose value may diminish as seasonal trends move on.

4. Product endorsement

Celebrity endorsement is a popular brand strategy for increasing the value of fashion products. While it may drive sales, it is important to consider what effect it will have on investment quality.

A recent example was when the British pop star Harry Styles wore the luxe Adidas x Gucci Gazelle trainers, during his 2023 tour, resulting in a reported 100% increase in sales of the trainer.

While sneakers have previously had a bouyant resale market, that is now declining, raising questions as to whether they will continue to be positive investment pieces. Celebrities may create hype – but their endorsement does not always ensure the longevity of a product’s value.

In 1999, Dior’s saddle bag was featured on US TV series Sex and the City, securing its place as an iconic designer bag. While this increased its value and desirability at the time, the bag eventually faded from view, until 2018, when Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s current design director, relaunched it. This resulted in a frenzy of interest in the original Galliano designs.

Endorsement creates hype and desirability, but occasionally it can also create a classic too. But this takes time, and it’s best to consider other factors including brand authenticity, quality and style when planning an investment purchase.

Also, value does not always have to have a price attributed to it. In the world of designer fashion, it is important not to overlook the significance of the emotional durability of our purchases and how that can ensure an enduring value and longevity.

Naomi Braithwaite, Associate Professor in Fashion Marketing and Branding, Nottingham Trent University

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Man's DIY speed camera sign sparks debate

Over the years Aussies have come up with various ways to warn fellow drivers of nearby speed cameras, and one man took matters into his own hands by alerting motorists with a handwritten sign.

Dressed in a neon orange singlet, a man was spotted at a busy intersection on the Princes Highway in Melbourne over the weekend waving to passing cars while holding up a "Beware Camera" sign.

The photo was shared to local news service Wyndham TV's Instagram, and many were quick to praise the "local hero", who one identified as Daryl.

“Absolute bloody Aussie legend right there,” one person commented.

"A good citizen," another wrote.

A few others commented that he was doing "God's work" and deserved to be bought "a beer or 10".

However, not everyone was pleased with this act, with many questioning why he was interfering with road safety measures.

“Motorists need to take responsibility for not speeding,” one person argued, before others defended the move, saying it would reduce speeding and crashes.

Others asked why he didn't have more important things to do with his time.

There is no specific law that prohibits warning other drivers about the presence of a speed camera, so the man's actions were legal.

This is not the first time Aussies have done this, with many sharing videos exposing the "sneaky" way mobile speed cameras catch drivers in NSW on social media .

One person shared a video to TikTok showing a mobile speed camera car parked next to another road sign.

“This is their tactics, parking next to other signs so they blend in,” he said in the viral video.

Image: Instagram/@wyndhamtv

$15 Kmart hack that'll transform your kitchen

Who doesn't love a cheap hack?

For the past few months shoppers have been obsessed with a $15 bathroom item from Kmart, but not for its intended use.

Shoppers have used the retailer’s 3 Tier Floor Caddy, which was originally designed to organise toiletries and save floor space, as a coffee station that's not only practical, but looks nice as well.

One shopper took it to the next level, by using the $31 Flexi Storage Decorative Shelving from Bunnings and attaching it to two of the Kmart floor caddies to display plants alongside the DIY coffee station.

She initially bought the shelves to install on her kitchen wall, but after finding out they weren't sturdy enough, it has been sitting in her home, until she saw the Kmart caddy hack.

“I bought these floating shelves from Bunnings but after reading the reviews I found that people had said they are not great! And I was too lazy to take them back,” she wrote.

“Then I saw this Kmart hack with the shower caddies and I’m very happy with the result.”

Shoppers were impressed with the finished results, praising the "incredible" idea.

“This looks excellent. Like you, we have a small kitchen with very limited shelving. You’ve inspired me to do the same,” one wrote.

“Awesome, looks amazing,” another added, while a third commented, “That’s so clever, thanks for sharing”.

However a few others didn't get the hype, with one saying: “I don’t get coffee stations. Not saying it’s bad. Just think it creates more clutter."

Image: Facebook/ Kmart

Police share wild seatbelt pic after fining driver for bizarre DIY fix

A driver has copped a $387 fine over their bizarre seatbelt fix during a random stationary test at Richmond in Sydney's northwest.

A photo shared by NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol showed the shocking state of the driver's seatbelt, which was tattered and held together by duct tape.

The police department have warned other drivers to make sure their seatbelts are in good condition, otherwise they too might cop a fine and demerit points.

"Seatbelts help to save lives, except for this one...." they wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

"Hawkesbury Highway Patrol were recently conducting random stationary testing on Londonderry Road at Richmond when they spoke with a driver about his seatbelt.

"Not only was the seatbelt not being worn, an inspection of the seatbelt found it to be dangerously defective," they added.

"He was issued a defect notice and infringement in the amount of $387 and three demerit points. Please ensure your seatbelts don't look like this."

Many commenters were baffled as to how the vehicle passed the eSafety check, also known as a pink slip inspection, which is required for vehicles over five years old in NSW to be deemed roadworthy.

"And who passed the Pink Slip? That’s where I’d be heading," one wrote.

"I wonder who did the rego check on this vehicle," another added.

"How does it even get to that stage," a third questioned, while others agreed that the seatbelt was no longer safe.

Images: Getty / Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, NSW Police Force

Can’t afford a gym membership or fitness class? 3 things to include in a DIY exercise program

Lewis Ingram, University of South Australia; Hunter Bennett, University of South Australia, and Saravana Kumar, University of South Australia

With the rising cost of living, gyms memberships and fitness classes are becoming increasingly unaffordable. But the good news is you can make just as much progress at home.

Cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength and flexibility are the most important components of fitness. And each can be trained with little or no equipment. Let’s look at why – and how – to fit them into your DIY exercise program.

1. Cardiovascular endurance

Cardiovascular endurance exercise (or “cardio”) forces the heart and lungs to increase the supply of oxygen to the working muscles. Heart disease is a leading cause of death and cardiovascular endurance exercise helps keep the heart healthy.

The best thing about cardio is you don’t need any fancy equipment to do it. Walking, jogging and running are great options, as are cycling, skipping rope and swimming.

There are two approaches to maximise cardiovascular endurance:

high-intensity interval training (HIIT) – short bouts of hard exercise (around 80% to 95% of your maximum heart rate) interspersed with lower intensity recovery periods (around 40% to 50% of your maximum heart rate)

low-intensity steady-state (LISS) exercise – aerobic activity performed continuously at a low-to-moderate intensity (around 50% to 65% of your maximum heart rate) for an extended duration.

Both are great options. While high-intensity interval training can be more time efficient, low-intensity steady-state training might be more enjoyable and easier to sustain long-term.

No matter what you choose, aim for a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity cardiovascular exercise each week. For example, you could try 30 minutes, five days per week of low intensity cardio, or 25 minutes, three days per week of high-intensity activity, or a combination of the two.

How do you know if you’re exercising at the right intensity?

Smart watches that measure heart rate can help to monitor intensity. Or you can rely on the good old-fashioned talk test. During low-intensity activity, you should be able to speak in full sentences. Conversely, short phrases (initially) or single words (towards the end) should be all that’s manageable during high-intensity exercise.

2. Muscle strength

Next is muscle strength, which we train through resistance exercise. This is important for bone health, balance and metabolic health, especially as we age and our muscle mass and strength declines.

Aim for two days per week of whole-body resistance exercise performed at a moderate or greater intensity. Try to build two weekly sessions that target the major muscle groups. This could include:

squats – lower to the ground from standing by bending the hips, knees, and ankles while keeping the chest up tall before returning to standing by straightening the hips, knees and ankles

hinges – fold forward at the hips by pushing your bottom back to the wall behind you, keeping your back straight. A slight bend in the knees is fine but aim to keep your shins vertical

push-ups – if a full push-up is too difficult, you can place your hands on a raised surface such as a step or a chair

horizontal and vertical pull ups – using something like a portable chin up bar, which you can buy from sports supply stores

vertical pushes – pushing an object (or weight) vertically from the top of your chest to an overhead position.

Once you have selected your exercises, perform 2–3 sets of 8–12 repetitions at a moderate to greater intensity, with about 90 seconds rest between each set.

As you progress, continue to challenge your muscles by adding an extra set to each exercise, or including dumbbells, changing body position or wearing a backpack with weights. The goal should be to progress slightly each session.

However, if you have any underlying health conditions, disabilities, or are unsure how best to do this, see an exercise physiologist or physiotherapist.

3. Flexibility

Improved flexibility can increase your range of motion and improve your ability to manage daily life.

While we don’t know the best means of increasing flexibility, the most basic and readily accessible is static stretching. Here, we lengthen the muscle – for example, the hamstrings, until we feel a “stretching” sensation. Hold that position for 15–30 seconds.

While the precise intensity of this stretching sensation remains elusive, around 5–10 minutes per week per muscle group, spread across five days, seems to provide the best results.

How to stick with it?

The best exercise is the one that gets done. So, whatever you choose, make sure you enjoy it. After all, it’s about creating an ongoing commitment to exercise that will deliver long-term health benefits.

It’s also important to ensure you’re ready to exercise, especially if you have any underlying health issues, have been previously inactive, or are unsure how to start. A pre-exercise screening can help you to determine whether you should see a doctor or allied health professional before starting an exercise program and for guidance on the next steps. <!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. $35,000 home comes with a catch

Etsy is an online marketplace best known for its handmade trinkets and creative wares, but now, the site has decided to broaden its horizons and try its hand at selling houses too.

A new listing from the ‘store’ Modular Home Direct is offering eager homeowners and passionate crafters the chance to own a 432-square-foot tiny house for just $35,306.09 ($22,896 USD).

However, the property comes with a catch: its loving owner must construct it by themselves.

The listing’s description declares it to be a “beautiful modern low cost home” that comes with “doors, windows, insulated wall panels, flooring, baseboard trims, drywall, insulated roof, plumbing and electrical hook ups”. Furniture, however, was not included.

According to the American real-estate company Zillow, the home’s asking price of $22,896 USD is less than one tenth of the average cost of a home in the United States (~$346,270 USD).

The flatpack property is manufactured by Modular Home Direct, the same company behind the listing, and features all the key necessities in a tiny home as well as a few bonuses - a bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen, a living room, loft, and even front and rear porches.

And for anyone looking to take on the challenge - though the offering is limited to the United States due to shipping logistics - there are a few things to consider. For as well as the base construction, the home will also require the installation of electricity and plumbing.

According to the Daily Mail, the US-based property site Home Advisor has estimated that these costs would see potential owners forking out anywhere between $550 to $2,3000 USD on just the property’s electrical wiring, while plumbing could start at around $360 and could reach up to $2,000.

Modular Home Direct aren’t the first to try and capitalise on the growing tiny house movement, as people all over the world seek alternative housing options as real estate prices continue to soar.

And while some online weren’t thrilled with the idea, others were onboard, though most seemed to agree that the price was too good to be true, and likely would increase as more costs came to light.

“The cost of materials in a house is much less than the ground it sits on,” a Daily Mail reader said. “By the time you buy the land, go through the permitting process, bring utilities in.. the cost gets closer to an established home.”

“They have an interesting website, if you're handy it could be a diy project. My brother in law has a diy log cabin, family pitched in to build it, it's very nice,” one shared. “I think my husband and I could build this. We both know electrical and plumbing... only bump would be the heat pump”.

“You have to buy the land, buy the house, put the house together (or pay someone to put it together), and pay someone to hook up the electricity and water. You'd probably have to pay for building permits and inspections,” someone said, before noting that “so once you've done all that, it would probably be easier just to buy a move-in ready house.”

And as another wrote, “like everything else meant to be affordable, it will soon cost $109K when it catches on.”

Images: Etsy

19 handy uses for toothpaste that have nothing to do with your teeth

Remove scuffs from shoes

A little toothpaste does an amazing job of removing scuffs from leather shoes. Just squirt a dab on the scuffed area and rub with a soft cloth. Wipe clean with a damp cloth. The leather will look like new.

Clean your piano keys

Has tickling the ivories left them a bit dingy? Clean them up with toothpaste and a toothbrush, then wipe them down with a damp cloth. Makes sense, since ivory is essentially elephant teeth. However, toothpaste will work just as well on modern pianos that usually have keys covered with plastic rather than real ivory.

Clean your sneakers

Want to clean and whiten the rubber part of your sneakers? Get out the non-gel toothpaste and an old toothbrush. After scrubbing, clean off the toothpaste with a damp cloth.

Clean your clothes iron

The mild abrasive in non-gel toothpaste is just the ticket for scrubbing the gunk off the bottom plate of your clothes iron. Apply the toothpaste to the cool iron, scrub with a rag, then rinse clean.

Polish a diamond ring

Put a little toothpaste on an old toothbrush and use it to make your diamond ring sparkle instead of your teeth. Clean off the residue with a damp cloth.

Deodorise baby bottles

Baby bottles inevitably pick up a sour-milk smell. Toothpaste will remove the odour in a jiffy. Just put some on your bottle brush and scrub away. Be sure to rinse thoroughly.

Prevent fogged goggles

Whether you are doing woodworking or going skiing or scuba diving, nothing is more frustrating (and sometimes dangerous) than fogged goggles. Prevent the problem by coating the goggles with toothpaste and then wiping them off.

Prevent bathroom mirrors from fogging

Ouch! You cut yourself shaving and it’s no wonder – you can’t see your face clearly in that fogged-up bathroom mirror. Next time, coat the mirror with non-gel toothpaste and wipe it off before you get in the shower. When you get out, the mirror won’t be fogged.

Shine bathroom and kitchen chrome

They make commercial cleaners with a very fine abrasive designed to shine up chrome, but if you don’t have any handy, the fine abrasive in non-gel toothpaste works just as well. Just smear on the toothpaste and polish with a soft, dry cloth.

Clean the bathroom sink

Non-gel toothpaste works as well as anything else to clean the bathroom sink. The tube’s sitting right there, so just squirt some in, scrub with a sponge, and rinse it out. Bonus: the toothpaste will kill any odours emanating from the drain trap.

Remove crayon from walls

Did crayon-toting kids get creative on your wall? Roll up your sleeves and grab a tube of non-gel toothpaste and a rag or – better yet – a scrub brush. Squirt the toothpaste on the wall and start scrubbing. The fine abrasive in the toothpaste will rub away the crayon every time. Rinse the wall with water.

Remove ink or lipstick stains from fabric

Oh no, a pen opened up in the pocket of your favourite shirt! This may or may not work, depending on the fabric and the ink, but it is certainly worth a try before consigning the shirt to the scrap bin. Put non-gel toothpaste on the stain and rub the fabric vigorously together. Rinse with water. Did some of the ink come out? Great! Repeat the process a few more times until you get rid of all the ink. The same process works for lipstick

Remove watermarks from furniture

You leave coasters around. But some people just won’t use them. To get rid of those telltale watermark rings left by sweating beverages, gently rub some non-gel toothpaste on the wood with a soft cloth. Then wipe it off with a damp cloth and let it dry before applying furniture polish.

Clear up pimples

Dab a bit of non-gel, non-whitening toothpaste on the offending spot, and it should be dried up by morning. The toothpaste dehydrates the pimple and absorbs the oil. This remedy works best on pimples that have come to a head. Caution: this remedy may be irritating to sensitive skin.

Clean smells from hands

The ingredients in toothpaste that deodorise your mouth will work on your hands as well. If you’ve gotten into something stinky, wash your hands with toothpaste, and they’ll smell great.

Stop bug bites from itching

Put toothpaste on your bug bite to keep it from itching. Dab a dime-sized amount onto your bug bite. This method also helps to cool down burns on your skin.

Remove a stain from the carpet

Rub toothpaste into the stain on the carpet with a toothbrush or sponge. Rinse with water and repeat until the stain comes up.

Clean your foggy headlights

Make the headlights on your car shine like new. Put toothpaste onto a sponge and scrub your headlight in circular motions. Wipe the toothpaste off with a damp cloth.

Remove small scratches from your phone screen

Rub toothpaste on the front or back of your phone (wherever there are scratches). The toothpaste will work to reduce the look of the scratches and make your phone screen look much better.

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.

Make your bedroom a place you’ll never want to leave

Not all of us can pop into a local homeware store and score a $1,000 bed spread, but there are some little changes you can make to create the look of a super luxe bedroom.

1. Pillows, pillows, pillows!

Plump, over-stuffed pillows are what you see at fancy hotels, so bring the same look home.

Overstuff your decorative throw cushions to give them a more sophisticated look. Pile on more pillows with a colour scheme of your choice and transform your bed.

2. Make a blanket statement

Luxury bedding isn’t attainable for all, so focus on a throw blanket instead. Choose a nice colour, one that suits your pillows and other decor and drape it off the end of your bed. It will take the focus off your duvet.

3. Style your bed side table

Don’t let it evolve into a junk drawer! Empty your dining classes and clear things like hand creams and loose papers. To make the room more glamorous, get a new lamp, add in a plant and think about hanging something small in the empty wall space above the table.

4. Upgrade your mirror

Try an antique-inspired brass mirror or one with an interesting shape to draw attention to it. There are also mirrors with a shelf attached, so you’ll gain a little vertical storage where you can place candles, indoor plants or whatever decor you fancy.

Everything you’ve always wanted to know about the inner workings of your cruise ship

When it comes to life on board a cruise ship, travellers will usually look for features like great food options, fun shows, activities to keep busy, and a comfortable bed.

What many don’t think about, however, is the thought and precision that goes into building and designing a cruise ship.

Charlie, a cruise ship designer from Florida, has worked in the industry for over a decade and had a hand in helping put together the design for two huge cruise ships.

Charlie said that the main mission is to make guests feel comfortable and safe by any means necessary.

Speaking to 9Honey Travel, Charlie said, "If you notice things, we're not doing our job correctly."

"Our job is to make you feel at ease with the space."

A cruise ship takes several years to design, with a lot of planning, care and thought going into the most intricate details.

"Cruise ships are so large scale and that even though a lot of the designs are replicated from each room or ship, you have to ensure that the design fits each area and it's not just copy paste."

There are four main things Charlie says to keep an eye out for on your next cruising adventure, which make all the difference to your journey.

Safety first

Above all else on a cruise ship, the safety of the passengers and the crew must come first.

Aside from the practical elements such as bullet-proof glass and lounges that have the potential to turn into flotation devices, there are psychological considerations as well.

"Everything when it comes to cruise ship design comes from a safety standpoint, and how you make sure guests feel safe at all times," Charlie says.

"Like the fact there's handrails almost everywhere you look. Down to whether the height of a table will be at a height where if you need to lean down, it's probably a little bit taller than the average table, just so that you have something to grab onto."

Nothing moves unless it’s supposed to

Due to the constant movement on a cruise ship, everything onboard the vessel must be secured, which can make design aspects difficult.

"You have to keep in mind how things function within a space. So if you go to a restaurant, you can't join tables, or move tables because they're literally secured to the floor.

"And it's one of those things where it actually becomes very difficult in planning. The lighting plan, for example, also has to incorporate that because the lights overhead can't move. So your interior designers and your lighting designers have to be working together probably at least three to four years before you would actually install any of those."

So you're less likely to see things like pendant lights, unless they are on a rod fixed to the ceiling.

"You don't want to have that ability to see something in motion, because then that gives you the idea that you aren't safe," Charlie adds.

Quick repairs are a rarity

Charlie shared that longevity needs to be considered when designing a cruise ship, as repairs can often take a long time to complete.

"What's the lifespan and what's the duration of time it would take for someone to repair it. And are you able to store that stuff on a ship?

"Nothing is off the shelf. Nothing is just 'oh, I can go to the store and get that'. A manufacturer would produce that specifically for them. So if something does break, getting it replaced is going to be a lot more difficult.”

Long hallways are a big no

"Guest flow and how people move through a space is very key," Charlie points out.

"In most modern day ships, you wouldn't directly have a linear path except down your guest room hallway. Nowadays, you'd have little jogs (or alcoves) so that you can't just see all the way to the end of a floor.”

And the reasoning for this design choice is two-fold.

"Being able to have an end point or something to focus on helps to establish equilibrium. You have something to focus on if the ship starts to move a little bit," he explains.

Aussie designer wins lawsuit against Katy Perry

One of Katy Perry’s companies has been found guilty of infringing the trademark of a Sydney fashion designer.

Katie Jane Taylor has designed and sold her own line of clothing under her label ‘Katie Perry’ since 2008.

While the pop superstar Perry, born Katheryn Hudson, initially fought the Australian registration of the Katie Perry brand, she later withdrew it.

Taylor sued the singer for infringement in the Federal Court in 2019, more than a decade after the Firework singer started selling her own brand of merchandise, including clothing, under her stage name.

“This is a tale of two women, two teenage dreams and one name,” Justice Brigitte Markovic wrote in a judgement published on April 29 2023.

Judge Markovic found Hudson had infringed the mark on Twitter ahead of one of her Australian tours in 2014.

Despite the infringement, the judge concluded that the singer did not owe any compensation to the designer as she had used the trademark in “good faith”.

One of the singer’s other businesses Kitty Purry however is liable for damages because of the sale of clothing during her 2014 tour.

A bid by the star and her companies to cancel the Katy Perry trademark was dismissed by the Federal Court.

Markovic is yet to determine the amount of damages owed by Kitty Purry.

Stop making these 5 living room mistakes

A living room should be a welcoming place to entertain guests and a space where you can go to unwind.

Creating a comfortable and stylish living room doesn’t have to involve any manual labour or cost a fortune, a few simple tweaks can make a world of difference.

1. Furniture placement

If you tend to push furniture up against all the walls of your living room, you’re making it look smaller rather than larger.

Give the room the illusion of more space by pulling furniture away from the walls.

Plan your living room around the scale of the room, it will open it up and become a place you’ll never want to leave!

2. Too much clutter

Clutter makes a house a home but storage is key when it comes to keeping a tidy living room.

Pack away what you can to keep your tables relatively tidy.

Arrange flowers, books, candles or house plants however you like to create an inviting atmosphere.

3. TV placement

The optimal place for your TV to sit is on a blank wall that doesn’t block window light.

If you can, mount your TV on the wall for a cleaner look, otherwise have an appropriately sized TV unit to put it on.

4. Using the wrong rugs

Rugs are a must for a stylish living room but they need to look like they belong!

Small rugs can imbalance the room, so go for a big rug your furniture can sit on top of.

5. Lack of colour

Many living rooms lack colour, not just the walls, but the lack of artwork, rugs and cushions.

Bright pieces add life to a room. Hang artwork, get colourful pillows, plants, or other clutter to spruce up the room - just not too much!

“Rip off”: Charity shop blasted over extortionate sale

A local charity shop has come under fire for selling a pair of designer shoes for a hefty sum.

The op-shop at Palm Beach on the Gold Coast is selling a pair of gold embellished Christian LouBoutin loafers for $500 after being discounted from $1,483.

The eye-watering price tag was posted to Facebook and caused outrage among locals, as the shoes were propped up on a red velvet pillow.

A woman by the name of Jo Sherwood posted the image to the Palm Beach community Facebook page, writing, “You know when Palmy has gone really upmarket (sic) … designer shoes at Vinnies.”

Despite her claims, a spokesperson for the St Vincent de Paul Society has clarified the designer loafers were not from a Vinnies but another independent op shop in the area.

Many were quick to slam the hefty price tag, calling the sale a “rip-off”.

“It’s bloody disgusting the prices they charge on anything. I saw a Kmart dress in there last week, they were selling it for more than Kmart sold it for,” another wrote.

Others were quick to call out many op shops who seem to have forgotten who they are there for.

“Think they need to remember they are selling donated goods, not operating a boutique store,” someone replied.

Another said that “all op shops have forgotten that they are meant to be there for the poor people, not just the hipsters.”

The both of you,” wrote one fan.

“Timeless beauty,” declared another, followed by a series of red hearts, with two more added by Vera in response.

“You are a vampire,” one decided, “you just don't age.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Vera Wang (@verawang)

And while Vera is no stranger to such feedback, the 73-year-old had recently informed Elle magazine that while she’s “very flattered” that people think she’s ageing well, she’d never set out with that as her goal in life.

“I drink vodka, I sleep, I avoid the sun,” she added. “But I like to work. I don’t want to be pigeonholed.”

As she later noted, “I’m confronted with a bit of a moment now where so much has been said about my ageing. I just hope that it doesn’t supersede my work. It brings up the issue of ageism, and I don’t want to be pigeonholed. We pigeonhole women that are pregnant, small, tall, athletic … authenticity means so much to me … I was never really obsessed with ageing.”

She explained that while she can’t speak on behalf of the next generations, “things that exist now did not exist 50 or 60 years ago. There was no such thing as Botox. I’ve always focused on work. Work was my lifeline that kept me feeling relevant and challenged me over the years. I think the mind is more powerful than one could ever understand.”

While work and productivity are held in high regard by the designer, she has also spoken up about the other main factors in her routine - most importantly, sleep. As Vera once told the BBC, "I’ve got to be really honest, one of them is sleep."

"I value having a vodka cocktail at the end of the day,” she went on to share. “Because it helps me to transition from a very intense work schedule to a bit of a private life."

In the same interview, she reiterated the point that she “never thought about youth” during her years in the fashion industry, putting it down to her daily encounters with “the most beautiful women in the world”.

"Because of that, I more envision them as my muses,” she explained, before admitting that it was perhaps a means of “dealing with ageing” that could be considered productive, unlike so many others saturating the market.

Images: Instagram

Creative ways to use leftover eggshells

Eggshells are surprisingly versatile, so you may want to keep them around. There are various ways you can use the shells around your home and garden!

1. Fertilise plants

There are plenty of natural sources you can use, like compost and manure, but you can also use eggshells! Crushed eggshells are a great source of calcium, which is needed for healthy plant growth.

Rinse out the eggshells, let them dry, then crush them into small pieces and sprinkle them in the garden soil. They will break down over time, providing an excellent source of calcium for your plants.

2. Feed the birds

Just like plants, and us, birds rely on calcium for strength, and if you’re a bird fan, then this is a sure way to keep them coming back. They’re a great addition to a bird’s diet, especially during nesting season.

Rinse out the eggshells and let them dry, then crush them into small pieces and sprinkle them around the garden for birds to find.

3. Make a scouring powder

You can use eggshells to make your own scouring powder to clean pots and pans. Rinse out the shells and let them dry, then crush or grind them.

Mix the crushed eggshells with baking soda to create a natural powder strong enough to remove tough stains and grime.

Don’t egg-nor the power of eggshells!

Creative ways to store more in your tiny bathroom

Having a small bathroom doesn’t necessarily have to mean you don’t have enough space, you just have to think outside the box! Getting creative with storage can make the smallest of bathrooms look stylish.

1. Towel racks

Using vertical space will help to clear out storage spaces built into your bathroom. Invest in a wall-mounted rack for towels, using bright-coloured towels can add a pop of colour to the room as well.

2. Basket Shelves

Mount a set of baskets on your bathroom wall, you can keep cosmetics here or some candles and an indoor plant for decoration.

3. Adhesive hooks

Make use of the space behind your bathroom door. Attach adhesive hooks to the inside of the door to store hair dryers, brushes and accessories.

4. Roll-away cart

If you’ve got a really cluttered bathroom, use a wheeled cart to store your soaps, lotions, shampoo and conditioner. It saves a cluttered sink and you can roll it in and out for convenience.

5. Dual purpose mirror

A two-in-one mirror can be a lifesaver for small spaces. Interior designer shares key things that make your home look “cheap”

Everyone has their own unique way of decorating their home, finding the perfect aesthetic to make your space your own.

And while there are limitless ways to jazz up your home, there are a few major faux pas that can instantly turn your space from fab to drab.

An expert interior designer has gone viral on TikTok for listing the three things to look out for when decorating your home in order to avoid your space looking “cheap” or “tacky”.

Visible cords

Her biggest no-no was having electrical cords for all your chargers and appliances on show.

She said they can make any space look “cluttered”, and recommends hiding cords behind special covers of under furniture.

“You can run your cords through the wall if possible and if not you can get a little case from Amazon. So much better,” she said.

Mass-produced artworks

Another thing the designer recommends avoiding is generic, mass-produced artwork that you find in home department shops.

“When you're looking for artwork, look for something a little bit more original, something that not everyone will have,” she said.

She also advised against cluttering a space with too much art, and recommended focusing on one main focal piece instead.

Tacky decor

The design expert also warned against tacky pillows, decor pieces and anything with an inspirational quote.

She told all shoppers to steer clear of anything that boasts the words “Live, Laugh, Love”, and encouraged people to pick more classic and timeless decor options.

While some appreciated the designers tips, others encouraged people to decorate their homes however they see fit.

“What if I am cheap?” one woman asked.

“Things that make my house look cheap: no money,” another quipped.

“If it makes you happy then it's not cheap,” another said.

“Just let people be happy with whatever they like and can afford,” one annoyed fan said.

5 tips for gardeners

When you first start gardening, do your research! Different plants require different maintenance, but here are some simple tips to help you get the garden of your dreams.

1. Prune

Not sure when to prune? Prune spring-flowering shrubs like lilacs and large flowers such as climbing roses. Prune immediately after the blooms fade; if you prune summer plants in autumn or winter, you’re removing the flower buds for the next Spring.

2. Growing season

Learn how long the growing season for your plant is, not all plants bloom in Spring! Do your research, and if you want to start small, start growing plants indoors to avoid overgrowing them.

3. Pay attention to the light

Research how much light your plant needs. If you’re growing vegetables, get them into a spot where they will receive 8 hours of direct sunlight every day.

Most veggies need full sun to produce the best harvest.

4. Soil trumps fertiliser

Of course, fertilizer is a great tool for growing plants, but what you really need to pay attention to for optimal growth is quality soil. You can try organic fertilizers like compost and well-aged manure to your soil. The best soil structure is crumbly, easy to dig, happily receives water and is loose enough to provide oxygen for plant roots.

5. Avoid digging or planting in wet soil

Wait until the soil is crumbly and no longer forms a ball when you squeeze it in your hands. It doesn’t have to be bone dry, but just enough moisture to allow your plant to breathe and for you to plant them optimally.
