Dr Chris Brown recalls "dramatic" personal renovation disaster

Dream Home host Dr Chris Brown has revealed his own renovation fail on the latest episode of the show.

The vet turned TV star has taken on a new role where he guides six teams of aspiring renovators through the joys — and pitfalls — of house remodelling in the new Channel 7 reality show.

Speaking to 7NEWS, the star recalled the terrifying moment his home nearly fell in on itself when he was trying to build a garage.

“On my first renovation, I decided I needed a garage underneath my house,” he said, adding that he had council approval for the renovation.

“With a couple of tradies, we went about digging out the garage underneath the house, in the sand.

“We just kept on digging, digging, digging, until a rather large sound indicated the house was about to fall into the hole!

“So that’s about as dramatic as it as it gets.

“To have your house sort of falling in on itself, that was a pretty big learning curve.”

He said that the problem was solved "very quickly" with a lot of underpinning and structural support.

“A lot of those steel support posts that you can sort of wind up and down, they went in, and thankfully the house didn’t fold in half,” he said, laughing at the situation.

He added that unexpected situations like this are what make renovation shows so appealing as "there’s so much natural drama, you don’t have to fake anything."

“Choices have to be made, and it’s either the right way or the wrong way, and you only really discover that as you go along," he added.

“Sometimes it’s too late to turn back once you realise you’ve made a terrible mistake.”

Chris added that his role on the show is almost as a"coach" to the pairs, supporting them through the renovation challenges, and helping them get to the finish line.

“What these couples are going through, and just how much they put on the line to get these renovations done, is quite inspiring and quite uplifting and but also thoroughly entertaining,” he said.

Image: Seven

Dramatic rescue of hikers stranded overnight in Alpine Region

In a heart-stopping ordeal captured on video, two hikers were airlifted to safety after spending a harrowing night stranded in Victoria's remote Alpine Region.

The dramatic rescue unfolded on Mount Bogong, one of Australia's highest peaks, highlighting both the beauty and dangers of wilderness exploration.

The two hikers, aged 63 and 71, had embarked on what they likely anticipated as a routine trek through the rugged terrain of the Alpine Region. However, as evening descended, their situation took a perilous turn.

Recognising the need for assistance, they reached out to emergency services, prompting a swift response from the police Air Wing and Search and Rescue Squad.

Navigating treacherous landscapes requires both skill and intuition, and it appears that these experienced hikers may have underestimated the challenges posed by Mount Bogong's unforgiving environment. Despite their best efforts, they found themselves stranded, facing a night of uncertainty amidst the wilderness.

Thankfully, the Search and Rescue Squad quickly established communication with the stranded hikers, assessing their situation and determining that they possessed sufficient supplies and experience to endure the night. While undoubtedly a daunting experience, the hikers remained composed, awaiting the dawn and the arrival of their rescuers.

As the first light broke over the Alpine peaks, a plan was set in motion to extract the hikers from their precarious situation. With precision and expertise, the police Air Wing and Search and Rescue Squad orchestrated a daring helicopter rescue operation. Against the backdrop of Mount Bogong's majestic slopes, the helicopter descended, its rotor blades slicing through the crisp mountain air.

The video footage captured the tension and relief as the hikers were carefully winched to safety, lifted from the wilderness that had held them captive. Once aboard the helicopter, they were swiftly transported to solid ground, where awaiting ambulance paramedics ensured their well-being.

Images: Victoria Police

Dramatic first look at recovered Titan submersible

The first glimpse of the wreckage of the ill-fated Titan sub was revealed on Wednesday, a full ten days after its tragic implosion claimed the lives of all five passengers during a deep-sea expedition to explore the Titanic. Large sections of the submersible were carefully transported to shore, lifted by a crane from the recovery ship upon its arrival in Canada.

Despite efforts to conceal it, photographs unveiled the twisted remnants of electronic equipment, along with the distinctive circular window of the nose cone, according to reports from Canada Press.

The retrieval operation was carried out by Pelagic Research Services, a US-based organisation. The crew aboard the Horizon Arctic vessel had tirelessly laboured for ten consecutive days, facing both physical and mental challenges.

Utilising specialised remote-controlled vehicles, they located the shattered sub approximately 12,500 feet beneath the surface, several hundred feet away from the Titanic wreckage that the Titan sub had set out to explore.

The debris retrieved will undergo examination as part of ongoing investigations conducted by authorities in the United States and Canada to shed light on the tragedy. The US Coast Guard has also recovered "presumed human remains" from the seafloor in the area of the Titan submersible's debris field.

The remains were recovered "within the wreckage" of the submersible and will be analysed by medical professionals, the Coast Guard said in a news release.

Officials believe the Titan sub experienced a "catastrophic implosion" early into its dive on Father's Day. The sub was piloted by Stockton Rush, the CEO of Titan sub, who has since faced growing controversy for allegedly disregarding significant safety concerns while allowing affluent tourists to pay a hefty sum of $250,000 per person for the ill-fated voyage.

Images: Twitter

Dicko opens up on Kerri-Anne's dramatic exit from I'm A Celeb

I'm A Celeb evictee Dicko has opened up on the dramatic fight that led to Kerri-Anne Kennerley's abrupt exit from the show.

Kerri-Anne quit the show after just three days, after she was embroiled in an argument with Dicko, MAFS star Domenica Calarco and radio host Woody Whitelaw, as the four contestants were taking part in one of the show's infamous food challenges.

The challenges are notorious for making contestants eat disgusting foods, and as a result, Kerri-Anne refused to participate.

Her continued refusal to take part in challenges – in which contestants win stars, translating to meals for their hungry campmates – was too much for Domenica, who declared she had “never met anyone so selfish,” and insisted KAK had “literally no decency or respect.”

Speaking candidly on the Kyle and Jackie O Show on Thursday morning, Dicko explained that things got even nastier when the cameras weren't rolling.

He said that Dom had called Kerri-Anne the c-word, who was "all class" in her response to the insult.

Speaking to news.com.au just hours after he was voted out of camp, Dicko said that while he couldn’t condone “how easily Dom went from nought to Gremlin in five seconds,” he shared her frustrations with how Kennerley played the game.

“I did keep slapping my forehead every time she’d insinuate that she wasn’t going to get involved in any of the challenges in any meaningful way,” he said.

“She wasn’t going to do this or that – well, why are you here? It’s not actually a camping trip. The only way we get fed is with these stars, and if you’re not prepared to have a crack, we’re going to go hungry."

“I honestly think she hadn’t truly grasped that, which is so confusing. She’s a smart woman, you’d presume she’s got management … I don’t understand how they didn’t know what she was stepping into.”

While the fight between the two women was so severe that it lead to Kerri-Anne quitting the show, Dicko admitted he didn't take it seriously in the moment.

“If I’m really honest, myself and Woody were off to one side laughing our tits off. I probably should’ve been a bit more grown up, but watching Australian TV royalty duke it out with a gnarly upstart was just precious – and I had a front-row seat,” he confessed.

“I’d like to be the grown-up in the room and say, ‘This shouldn’t have happened, it’s dragged TV through the mud,’ but I laughed like a drain for two days afterwards I’m afraid. I kind of enjoyed it.”

Image credits: I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here

Sam Mac has revealed the reason behind his major body transformation just weeks after posing for the cover of Men’s Health.

The Sunrise weatherman, who paired up with celebrity trainer Jono Castono for his fitness journey shared on Instagram a side-by-side before and after shot, explaining why he decided to take on the challenge.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sam Mac (@sammacinsta)

“The first few months of becoming a dad is a bit of a blur,” he wrote. “Of course, it’s magical, but you’re also in survival mode. Health & fitness take a back seat.

“I wanted to get out of the rut. I wanted to show people (particularly new dads) that if you truly apply yourself, you can start seeing results reasonably quickly. You can get yourself physically & mentally fitter which is a huge win for you, your partner & your little one.”

Sam shared that the process was “bloody hard work” but he was eager to share tips for his followers to achieve their goals.

“I’m fully aware everyone’s situation & goals are different & not everyone has access to the trainers & experts I did,” he said. “But I’m hoping I can borrow (*steal) some of the knowledge & pointers I picked up along the way & pass it on to you.”

One person asked if he was still working out at the same intensity he was in the lead-up to the Men’s Health cover and Sam revealed he wasn’t.

“The short answer is no,” he said. “I don’t think it’s realistic for me, certainly not sustainable and probably not even healthy. I was consumed by it, it was an obsession.

“But, the principles, the learnings are still the same and they're still relevant… I would say that I’m now operating at about 75 per cent of what I was throughout the challenge, and that’s manageable.”

The dad-of-one shared that his new fitness goals included reaching 10,000 steps per day, training three to four times per week, and the “reintroduction of cheese naan bread (in moderation)”.

Sam admitted that the three “most confronting” parts of the challenge were getting waxed, having to wear disposable spray tan underwear and getting the spray tan for the magazine shoot. He said his “secret weapon” was his Apple Watch which helped him stay on track.

Gender pension gap: why women save less - and why that’s changing dramatically

One issue that has attracted growing attention in recent years is the “gender pension gap” – the fact that on average, women have lower private pension wealth and lower income in retirement than men. But before rushing to conclusions about how to “fix” this, it is crucial to understand what lies behind any pension differences between men and women.

There are three main potential drivers behind this phenomenon:

Different labour market experiences: the “gender pay gap”, and the fact that men have longer paid working lives than women;

Different investment strategies: when it comes to defined contribution pensions, men choose to invest in portfolios with a higher expected rate of return.

Different saving rates: as we investigate below, men and women may also differ in how likely they are to be offered a pension in their job, or tend to work for employers that contribute more or less to a pension, or tend to make different contributions themselves.

Importantly, the role of these potential drivers will have changed over time for various reasons. Mothers have increasingly participated in the labour market over the years, for example. Final salary pensions have been reformed to career average schemes, which in particular reduced the generosity for long stayers and those with stronger pay growth, affecting men more than women. Also, automatic enrolment has been introduced for workplace pensions, which affected everyone’s participation in them.

Gaps in pension income today may therefore reflect labour markets and pension arrangements from many years ago, and the gap in pension income for current working-age individuals may be quite different when they reach retirement. In an ongoing programme of work at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, we are examining in detail differences in pension saving rates between men and women that will contribute to a future “gender pension gap” for today’s working age individuals.

Making sense of the gap

In a first publication, we have documented differences in average pension saving between male and female employees before the introduction of automatic enrolment in 2012. We found that on average across all employees (whether saving in a pension or not), women of all ages actually contributed more as a proportion of their earnings each year than men.

However, this was driven by the fact that women were more likely to work in the public sector, where contribution rates are typically higher. Examining average pension saving among men and women within each sector reveals a different pattern. The average saving rates of male and female employees were similar until around age 35 but then diverged, with average contributions continuing to increase with age for men but not changing for women.

The graphs below unpick what was driving this pattern among private-sector employees in Great Britain (though the pattern was broadly similar for public-sector employees). It was caused by the extent to which men and women participated in a pension.

The proportion of men and women saving anything in a private pension was similar until around age 30 but then diverged, with men increasingly likely to be saving in a pension as they get older, while women’s pension participation plateaued. On the other hand, average contribution rates for those saving in a pension were actually slightly higher as a share of earnings among women than men.

Pension participation in overall savings

Average contribution rates in pension savings

What might have been driving differences in pension participation? The timing of the divergence in people’s lives mirrored the evolution of the gender gaps in pay, commuting and firm productivity, and suggested that the arrival of children and related employment decisions was an important factor.

So in our ongoing programme of research we are examining whether the gap in pension participation is associated with the arrival of children, and the extent to which female employees received a different pension offer from their employer, or made different saving decisions when presented with the same offer as male employees.

Effect of automatic enrolment

The introduction of automatic enrolment into workplace pensions has substantially changed pension-saving behaviour – in particular, substantially increasing pension participation among employees targeted by the policy. The graph below shows the proportion of male and female employees of different ages who were saving in a private workplace pension in 2012 and 2019 in Great Britain.

The pattern in 2012 is represented by the two sets of dashed lines, with men again in blue and women in purple. It is similar to that estimated in the first graph in this article.

But the pattern in 2019 is totally different. Rather than participation diverging at a particular age, women are now slightly less likely to be in a pension at all ages than men (but the level of participation among both is considerably higher). Automatic enrolment will therefore have fundamentally changed the nature of the gender gap in pension-saving rates going forwards.

Pension participation 2019 vs 2012

This highlights the importance of examining gender differences in saving rates, rather than just accrued pension wealth or pension income. Focusing on the latter risks developing policies to fix a perceived problem that has already changed.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

"Dramatic result": New drug shows hope for slowing down Alzheimer's disease

A trial drug has shown "significant" results in slowing down Alzheimer's disease, with Australian healthcare experts hopeful in where this breakthrough can take their research.

The drug, known as Lecanemab, has been proven to reduce cognitive decline by 27 per cent compared to placebo, according to an overseas study.

More than 1,700 patients with mild cognitive impairment were enrolled in the study and the results were collected over 18 months.

"Functionally and cognitively, it seems they did better and so that is a dramatic result," Dr Lawrence Honig, one of the study investigators from Columbia University Medical Centre, said.

The drug works by removing the build-up of amyloid plaques in the brain which is one of the hallmarks of the disease, which featured in the scans of each study participant.

Australian experts are excited about the findings, and how this can further their research.

"This is the first time we've seen a drug like this have these kinds of effects," Professor Sharon Naismith, Clinical Neuropsychologist & NHMRC Dementia Leadership Fellow at the University of Sydney, said.

"The results of this trial have massive implications for our resourcing."

Naismith warns there's a need to spend more money on better diagnosing patients with mild cognitive impairment.

"In the past there has been a lot of reluctance from healthcare physicians to diagnose or ask about cognitive impairment, even in primary care," she said.

She said being able to access a drug that can slow cognitive decline will change the paradigm and conversation around Alzheimer's disease.

"I do think we're going to get a real avalanche of people coming to GPs and coming to memory clinics for that reason," she said.

Professor Kathryn Goozee, Director of KaRa Minds at Macquarie Park said the study showed using an antibody to target amyloid in the brain can help with cognition.

"To date there has been no disease-modifying medication so we want to be offering studies that can potentially change that trajectory," Goozee said.

The full details of the results will be presented at an international conference of experts in the US in late November.

Dramatic underwater rescue of unconscious swimmer captured in photographs

The dramatic rescue of Team USA swimmer Anita Alvarez has been captured by underwater photographer Oli Scarff in a series of photos that make for a moment-by-moment replay.

Alvarez was performing in the artistic swimming solo free final at the 2022 World Aquatics Championship in Budapest when, at the end of her swim, she became unconscious and sank to the bottom of the pool.

Head coach Andrea Fuentes quickly sprang into action, diving into the pool fully clothed and swimming down to grab Alvarez.

“It was a good scare,” Fuentes told Spanish sports newspaper Macra.

“I had to dive in because the lifeguards didn’t do it. I was scared because I could see she wasn’t breathing.”

Fuentes then brought Alvarez to the pool’s surface, where another swimmer helped take the unconscious athlete to the edge of the pool.

Alvarez was lifted out of the water and onto a stretcher so she could receive medical attention.

In a statement, Fuentes confirmed that Alvarez had a medical emergency but that “all is okay”.

“The doctors checked all vitals and everything is normal: heart rate, oxygen, sugar levels, blood pressure, etc … all is okay,” she said.

“We sometimes forget that this happens in other high-endurance sports.

“We have seen images where some athletes don’t make it to the finish line and others help them to get there.

“Our sport is no different than others, just in a pool, we push through limits and sometimes we find them.

“Anita feels good now and the doctors also say she is okay. Tomorrow she will rest all day and will decide with the doctor if she can swim free team finals or not. Thank you for all your well wishes for Anita.”

This isn’t the first time Alvarez has experienced a medical emergency in the pool, nor is it the first time Fuentes has saved her.

Alvarez briefly lost consciousness at the end of a routine while at an Olympic qualification event in Barcelona last June, where Fuentes dove in to rescue her.

The 25-year-old came seventh in Wednesday’s competition with a score of 87.6333, with Japan’s Yukiko Inui claiming victory having scored 95.3667.

Images: Oli Scarff (Getty Images)

The dramatic moment Karl stormed off set

Karl Stefanovic walked off the set of The Today Show after being insulted by his co-host Allison Langdon.

The pair were discussing Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s defamation case in which Depp’s sister Depp’s sister Christi Dembrowski said Heard called the actor “old and fat”.

Karl was beginning to say “Being called a fat old man is like…” before Allison jumped in and bluntly told him: “You’re not old”.

“Or fat! I said all of them! Old or fat!”

Karl stood up from the couch and said he was not accepting these comments from Allison before walking off set.

“She's fat-shaming! She's fat-shaming again, Australia! I'm going on a diet.”

Allison sat in disbelief as Karl walked off, leaving her to wrap up the show.

“I was giving you a compliment,” she called out to Karl.

However, it did not stop there with Karl taking it a step further and involving Channel Nine publicist Adrian Motte telling him: “That’s disgusting isn’t it?”

Allison defended herself, saying she was not insulting Karl.

“I basically called you young, thin and handsome.”

“I really try. My feelings get hurt!” Karl yelled back.

“He's so sensitive! I just called him thin, handsome, and young. That's what I just said.

“I deal with this every day. Everyday is like this!”

The camera then showed Karl pretending to cry in the corner before admitting the pair were messing around.

Image: The Today Show

Not sure the context but the groomsmen and guests were fighting among themselves,” the person behind the camera said.

In the now viral video, guests have taken off their suit jackets as four women and four men fought on the busy road, halting traffic.

One male guest is seen throwing a woman to the ground before running after another guest.

A separate fight, directly adjacent on the open highway side of the intersection, involved at least another dozen revellers.

One man is seen on the ground in front of a stopped white car, prompting three others to rush over to check on him.

Another man is captured on video with no shirt, and is seen grabbing someone from behind and hitting their head on the asphalt.

Meanwhile, another man – who appears to not be a guest at the function or involved in the fight – attempts to direct traffic around the brawl.

The police spokeswoman said that when police arrived, most of the guests had left the scene and “those remaining were reluctant to make a complaint”.

“Following further inquiries, police last night [Sunday, February 20] spoke with a 26-year-old man who told police he’d suffered a broken nose as well as injuries to his face and ribs after being knocked unconscious during the affray,” she said.

“Inquiries are continuing to identify those involved.”

Users on Reddit were shocked by the footage, with one person commenting he that they work “at the Yacht Club next door” and “probably served those people drinks before the wedding”.

Crime Stoppers have urged anyone who has any information about the incident to come forward.
